Variables with linkonce_odr and weak_odr linkage shouldn't be internalized

such variable, so reads and writes will become inconsistent
Differential revision: https://reviews.llvm.org/D61255

Summary:
We hit undefined references building with ThinLTO when one source file
contained explicit instantiations of a template method (weak_odr) but
there were also implicit instantiations in another file (linkonce_odr),
and the latter was the prevailing copy. In this case the symbol was
marked hidden when the prevailing linkonce_odr copy was promoted to
weak_odr. It led to unsats when the resulting shared library was linked
with other code that contained a reference (expecting to be resolved due
to the explicit instantiation).
Add a CanAutoHide flag to the GV summary to allow the thin link to
identify when all copies are eligible for auto-hiding (because they were
all originally linkonce_odr global unnamed addr), and only do the
auto-hide in that case.
Most of the changes here are due to plumbing the new flag through the
bitcode and llvm assembly, and resulting test changes. I augmented the
existing auto-hide test to check for this situation.

For ThinLTOCodegenerator, it has an option to save the object file
outputs into a directory which is essential for debug info. Tools like lldb
and dsymutil will look for these object files for debug info.
On Darwin platform, you can link fat binaries with one single clang
driver invocation like:
$ clang -arch x86_64 -arch i386 -Wl,-object_path_lto,$TMPDIR ...
Unfornately, the output object files for one architecture is going to
overwrite the previous ones and one architecture slice will end up with
no debug info. One example for this is to turn on ThinLTO for sanitizer
dylibs in compiler-rt project.
To fix the issue, add the name for the architecture into the name of the

Summary:
The AliasSummary previously contained the AliaseeGUID, which was only
populated when reading the summary from bitcode. This patch changes it
to instead hold the ValueInfo of the aliasee, and always populates it.
This enables more efficient access to the ValueInfo (specifically in the
recent patch r352438 which needed to perform an index hash table lookup
using the aliasee GUID).
As noted in the comments in AliasSummary, we no longer technically need
to keep a pointer to the corresponding aliasee summary, since it could
be obtained by walking the list of summaries on the ValueInfo looking
for the summary in the same module. However, I am concerned that this
would be inefficient when walking through the index during the thin
link for various analyses. That can be reevaluated in the future.
By always populating this new field, we can remove the guard and special
handling for a 0 aliasee GUID when dumping the dot graph of the summary.
An additional improvement in this patch is when reading the summaries
from LLVM assembly we now set the AliaseeSummary field to the aliasee
summary in that same module, which makes it consistent with the behavior
when reading the summary from bitcode.

An abstract call site is a wrapper that allows to treat direct,
indirect, and callback calls the same. If an abstract call site
represents a direct or indirect call site it behaves like a stripped
down version of a normal call site object. The abstract call site can
also represent a callback call, thus the fact that the initially
called function (=broker) may invoke a third one (=callback callee).
In this case, the abstract call side hides the middle man, hence the
broker function. The result is a representation of the callback call,
inside the broker, but in the context of the original instruction that
invoked the broker.
Again, there are up to three functions involved when we talk about
callback call sites. The caller (1), which invokes the broker
function. The broker function (2), that may or may not invoke the
callback callee. And finally the callback callee (3), which is the
target of the callback call.
The abstract call site will handle the mapping from parameters to
arguments depending on the semantic of the broker function. However,
it is important to note that the mapping is often partial. Thus, some
arguments of the call/invoke instruction are mapped to parameters of
the callee while others are not. At the same time, arguments of the
callback callee might be unknown, thus "null" if queried.
This patch introduces also !callback metadata which describe how a
callback broker maps from parameters to arguments. This metadata is
directly created by clang for known broker functions, provided through
source code attributes by the user, or later deduced by analyses.

This is then used during the LTO link to check whether all linked

The current llvm.mem.parallel_loop_access metadata has a problem in that
it uses LoopIDs. LoopID unfortunately is not loop identifier. It is
neither unique (there's even a regression test assigning the some LoopID
to multiple loops; can otherwise happen if passes such as LoopVersioning
make copies of entire loops) nor persistent (every time a property is
removed/added from a LoopID's MDNode, it will also receive a new LoopID;
this happens e.g. when calling Loop::setLoopAlreadyUnrolled()).
Since most loop transformation passes change the loop attributes (even
if it just to mark that a loop should not be processed again as
llvm.loop.isvectorized does, for the versioned and unversioned loop),
the parallel access information is lost for any subsequent pass.
This patch unlinks LoopIDs and parallel accesses.
llvm.mem.parallel_loop_access metadata on instruction is replaced by
llvm.access.group metadata. llvm.access.group points to a distinct
MDNode with no operands (avoiding the problem to ever need to add/remove
operands), called "access group". Alternatively, it can point to a list
of access groups. The LoopID then has an attribute
llvm.loop.parallel_accesses with all the access groups that are parallel
(no dependencies carries by this loop).
This intentionally avoid any kind of "ID". Loops that are clones/have
their attributes modifies retain the llvm.loop.parallel_accesses
attribute. Access instructions that a cloned point to the same access
group. It is not necessary for each access to have it's own "ID" MDNode,
but those memory access instructions with the same behavior can be
grouped together.
The behavior of llvm.mem.parallel_loop_access is not changed by this
patch, but should be considered deprecated.

Summary:
We can sometimes end up with multiple copies of a local variable that
have the same GUID in the index. This happens when there are local
variables with the same name that are in different source files having the
same name/path at compile time (but compiled into different bitcode objects).
In this case make sure we import the copy in the caller's module.
This enables importing both of the variables having the same GUID
(but which will have different promoted names since the module paths,
and therefore the module hashes, will be distinct).
Importing the wrong copy is particularly problematic for read only
variables, since we must import them as a local copy whenever
referenced. Otherwise we get undefs at link time.
Note that the llvm-lto.cpp and ThinLTOCodeGenerator changes are needed
for testing the distributed index case via clang, which will be sent as
a separate clang-side patch shortly. We were previously not doing the
dead code/read only computation before computing imports when testing
distributed index generation (like it was for testing importing and
other ThinLTO mechanisms alone).

When the debug location is parsed in BitcodeReader::parseFunction, the
scope and inlinedAt MDNodes are obtained via MDLoader->getMDNodeFwdRefOrNull(),
which will create a forward ref if they were not yet loaded.
Specifically, if one of these MDNodes is in the module level metadata
block, and this is during ThinLTO importing, that metadata block is
lazily loaded.
Most places in that invoke getMDNodeFwdRefOrNull have a corresponding call
to resolveForwardRefsAndPlaceholders which will take care of resolving them.
E.g. places that call getMetadataFwdRefOrLoad, or at the end of parsing a
function-level metadata block, or at the end of the initial lazy load of
module level metadata in order to handle invocations of getMDNodeFwdRefOrNull
for named metadata and global object attachments. However, the calls for
the scope/inlinedAt of debug locations are not backed by any such call to
resolveForwardRefsAndPlaceholders.

ModuleSummaryIndex::exportToDot crashes when linking the Linux kernel
under ThinLTO using LLVMgold.so. This is due to the exportToDot
function trying to get the GUID of an empty ValueInfo. The root cause
related to the fact that we attempt to get the GUID of an aliasee
via its OriginalGUID recorded in the aliasee summary, and that is not
always possible. Specifically, we cannot do this mapping when the value
is internal linkage and there were other internal linkage symbols with
the same name.
There are 2 fixes for the problem included here.
1) In all cases where we can currently print the dot file from the
command line (which is only via save-temps), we have a valid AliaseeGUID
in the AliasSummary. Use that when it is available, so that we can get
the correct aliasee GUID whenever possible.
2) However, if we were to invoke exportToDot from the debugger right
after it is built during the initial analysis step (i.e. the per-module
summary), we won't have the AliaseeGUID field populated. In that case,
we have a fallback fix that will simply print "@"+GUID when we aren't
able to get the GUID from the OriginalGUID. It simply checks if the VI
is valid or not before attempting to get the name. Additionally, since
getAliaseeGUID will assert that the AliaseeGUID is non-zero, guard the
earlier fix#1 by a new function hasAliaseeGUID().

It will also be more familiar to anyone used to nm.

This change fixes the tests by explicitly setting the expiration time to

By assigning all files in the cache a similar time, it is possible to see
that the newest files are still being kept, and that we aren't passing

sequence to be devirtualized. That indirect call (inserted by inlining
after promotion) will share the same vtable pointer as the fallback
indirect call that cannot be devirtualized.
Before this patch the code was incorrectly devirtualizing the fallback
indirect call.
See the new test and the example described there for more details.

Summary:
ThinLTO imports alias as a copy of a aliasee, so when we import such functions with type tests we will
need type ids used by function. However after D49565 we pick types only during processing of
FunctionSummary which is not happening for such aliesees.
Example:
Unit U1 with a type, a functions F with the type check, and an alias A to the function.
Unit U2 with only call to the alias A.
In particular, this happens when we use -mconstructor-aliases, which is default.
So if c++ unit only creates instance of the class, without calling any other methods it will lack of
necessary type ids, which will result in false CFI reports.

but it looks like this is just a flaky test.
Also added a C-interface function for large values, and updated
llvm-lto's --thinlto-cache-max-size-bytes switch to take a type larger

The maximum cache size in terms of bytes is a 64-bit number. However,
the methods to set it only took unsigned previously, which meant that
the maximum cache size could not be specified above 4GB. That's quite
small compared to the output of some projects, so it makes sense to
provide the ability to set larger values in that field.
We also needed a C-interface function that provides a greater range
than the existing thinlto_codegen_set_cache_size_bytes, which also only
takes an unsigned, so this change also adds

Summary:
Currently LowerTypeTests emits jumptable entries for all live external
and address-taken functions; however, we could limit the number of
functions that we emit entries for significantly.
For Cross-DSO CFI, we continue to emit jumptable entries for all
exported definitions. In the non-Cross-DSO CFI case, we only need to
emit jumptable entries for live functions that are address-taken in live
functions. This ignores exported functions and functions that are only
address taken in dead functions. This change uses ThinLTO summary data
(now emitted for all modules during ThinLTO builds) to determine
address-taken and liveness info.
The logic for emitting jumptable entries is more conservative in the
regular LTO case because we don't have summary data in the case of
monolithic LTO builds; however, once summaries are emitted for all LTO
builds we can unify the Thin/monolithic LTO logic to only use summaries
to determine the liveness of address taking functions.
This change is a partial fix for PR37474. It reduces the build size for
nacl_helper by ~2-3%, the reduction is due to nacl_helper compiling in
lots of unused code and unused functions that are address taken in dead
functions no longer being being considered live due to emitted jumptable
references. The reduction for chromium is ~0.1-0.2%.

have a std::map with this information, used when emitting the individual

well.
This issue is likely causing some unnecessary rebuilds of the ThinLTO

to those backends.

In order to set breakpoints on labels and list source code around
labels, we need collect debug information for labels, i.e., label
name, the function label belong, line number in the file, and the
address label located. In order to keep these information in LLVM
IR and to allow backend to generate debug information correctly.
We create a new kind of metadata for labels, DILabel. The format
of DILabel is
!DILabel(scope: !1, name: "foo", file: !2, line: 3)
We hope to keep debug information as much as possible even the
code is optimized. So, we create a new kind of intrinsic for label
metadata to avoid the metadata is eliminated with basic block.
The intrinsic will keep existing if we keep it from optimized out.
The format of the intrinsic is
llvm.dbg.label(metadata !1)
It has only one argument, that is the DILabel metadata. The
intrinsic will follow the label immediately. Backend could get the
label metadata through the intrinsic's parameter.
We also create DIBuilder API for labels to be used by Frontend.
Frontend could use createLabel() to allocate DILabel objects, and use
insertLabel() to insert llvm.dbg.label intrinsic in LLVM IR.

Summary:
If there's a callees metadata attached to the indirect call instruction, add CallGraphEdges to the callees mentioned in the metadata when computing FunctionSummary.
* Why this is necessary:
Consider following code example:
```
(foo.c)
static int f1(int x) {...}
static int f2(int x);
static int (*fptr)(int) = f2;
static int f2(int x) {
if (x) fptr=f1; return f1(x);
}
int foo(int x) {
(*fptr)(x); // !callees metadata of !{i32 (i32)* @f1, i32 (i32)* @f2} would be attached to this call.
}
(bar.c)
int bar(int x) {
return foo(x);
}
```
At LTO time when `foo.o` is imported into `bar.o`, function `foo` might be inlined into `bar` and PGO-guided indirect call promotion will run after that. If the profile data tells that the promotion of `@f1` or `@f2` is beneficial, the optimizer will check if the "promoted" `@f1` or `@f2` (such as `@f1.llvm.0` or `@f2.llvm.0`) is available. Without this patch, importing `!callees` metadata would only add promoted declarations of `@f1` and `@f2` to the `bar.o`, but still the optimizer will assume that the function is available and perform the promotion. The result of that is link failure with `undefined reference to @f1.llvm.0`.
This patch fixes this problem by adding callees in the `!callees` metadata to CallGraphEdges so that their definition would be properly imported into.
One may ask that there already is a logic to add indirect call promotion targets to be added to CallGraphEdges. However, if profile data says "indirect call promotion is only beneficial under a certain inline context", the logic wouldn't work. In the code example above, if profile data is like
```
bar:1000000:100000
1:100000
1: foo:100000
1: 100000 f1:100000
```
, Computing FunctionSummary for `foo.o` wouldn't add `foo->f1` to CallGraphEdges. (Also, it is at least "possible" that one can provide profile data to only link step but not to compilation step).

This is similar to r322317, but for visibility. It is not as neat

that:
- There are *a lot* of tests to update.

They are redundant because a GV is "obviously dso_local". This patch

processes ThinLTO used the stream for own output. However small changes in input,
could trigger combined module and shuffle outputs making life of llvm::LTO harder.
2. Always process combined module and write output to stream 0. Processing empty
combined module is cheap and allows llvm::LTO users to avoid implementing processing
which is already done in llvm::LTO.

Summary:
This implements a missing feature to allow importing of aliases, which
was previously disabled because alias cannot be available_externally.
We instead import an alias as a copy of its aliasee.
Some additional work was required in the IndexBitcodeWriter for the
distributed build case, to ensure that the aliasee has a value id
in the distributed index file (i.e. even when it is not being
imported directly).
This is a performance win in codes that have many aliases, e.g. C++
applications that have many constructor and destructor aliases.

Summary:
Currently the block frequency analysis is an approximation for irreducible
loops.
The new irreducible loop metadata is used to annotate the irreducible loop
headers with their header weights based on the PGO profile (currently this is
approximated to be evenly weighted) and to help improve the accuracy of the
block frequency analysis for irreducible loops.
This patch is a basic support for this.

The current code that handles personality functions when creating a
module summary does not correctly handle the case where a function's
personality function operand refers to the function indirectly
(e.g. via a bitcast). This patch handles such cases by treating
personality function references like any other reference, i.e. by
adding them to the function's reference list. This has the minor side
benefit of allowing personality functions to participate in early
dead stripping.
We do this by calling findRefEdges on the function itself. This way
we also end up handling other function operands (specifically prefix
data and prologue data) for free.

This change simplifies code that has to deal with
DIGlobalVariableExpression and mirrors how we treat DIExpressions in

representing empty expressions on globals, a nullptr and an empty
!DIExpression().
If someone needs to upgrade out-of-tree testcases:

This is PR33245.
Case I am fixing is next:
Imagine we have 2 BC files, one defines and uses personality routine,
second has only declaration and also uses it.
Previously algorithm computing dead symbols (llvm::computeDeadSymbols) did
not know about personality routines and leaved them dead even if function that
has routine was live.
As a result thinLTOInternalizeAndPromoteGUID() method changed binding for
such symbol to local. Later when LLD tried to link these objects it failed
because one object had undefined global symbol for routine and second
object contained local definition instead of global.
Patch set the live root flag on the corresponding FunctionSummary
for personality routines when we build the per-module summaries
during the compile step.

The %T lit expansion expands to a common directory shared between all the tests in the same directory, which is unexpected and unintuitive, and more importantly, it's been a source of subtle race conditions and flaky tests. In https://reviews.llvm.org/D35396, it was agreed that it would be best to simply ban %T and only keep %t, which is unique to each test. When a test needs a temporary directory, it can just create one using mkdir %t.
This patch removes %T in llvm.

Summary:
Until a more advanced version of importing can be implemented for
aliases (one that imports an alias as an available_externally definition
of the aliasee), skip the narrow subset of cases that was possible but
came at a cost: aliases of linkonce_odr functions could be imported
because the linkonce_odr function could be safely duplicated from the
source module. This came/comes at the cost of not being able to 'home'
imported linkonce functions (they had to be emitted linkonce_odr in all
the destination modules (even if they weren't used by an alias) rather
than as available_externally - causing extra object size).
Tangentially, this also was the only reason ThinLTO would emit multiple
CUs in to the resulting DWARF - which happens to be a problem for
Fission (there's a fix for this in GDB but not released yet, etc).
(actually it's not the only reason - but I'm sending a patch to fix the
other reason shortly)
There's no reason to believe this particularly narrow alias importing
was especially/meaningfully important, only that it was /possible/ to
implement in this way. When a more general solution is done, it should
still satisfy the DWARF concerns above, since the import will still be
available_externally, and thus not create extra CUs.
Since now all aliases are treated the same, I removed/simplified some
test cases since they were testing corner cases where there are no
longer any corners.

Summary: Currently the ThinLTO minimized bitcode file only strip the debug info, but there is still a lot of information in the minimized bit code file that will be not used for thin linker. In this patch, most of the extra information is striped to reduce the minimized bitcode file. Now only ModuleVersion, ModuleInfo, ModuleGlobalValueSummary, ModuleHash, Symtab and Strtab are left. Now the minimized bitcode file size is reduced to 15%-30% of the debug info stripped bitcode file size.

DIImportedEntity has a line number, but not a file field. To determine
the decl_line/decl_file we combine the line number from the
DIImportedEntity with the file from the DIImportedEntity's scope. This
does not work correctly when the parent scope is a DINamespace or a
DIModule, both of which do not have a source file.
This patch adds a file field to DIImportedEntity to unambiguously

Based on the original patch by Davide, but I've adjusted the API exposed
to just be different entry points rather than exposing more state
parameters. I've factored all the common logic out so that we don't have
any duplicate pipelines, we just stitch them together in different ways.
I think this makes the build easier to reason about and understand.
This adds a direct method for getting the module simplification pipeline
as well as a method to get the optimization pipeline. While not my
express goal, this seems nice and gives a good place comment about the
restrictions that are imposed on them.
I did make some minor changes to the way the pipelines are structured
here, but hopefully not ones that are significant or controversial:
1) I sunk the PGO indirect call promotion to only be run when we have
PGO enabled (or as part of the special ThinLTO pipeline).
2) I made the extra GlobalOpt run in ThinLTO just happen all the time
and at a slightly more powerful place (before we remove available
externaly functions). This seems like general goodness and not a big
compile time sink, so it didn't make sense to *only* use it in
ThinLTO. Fewer differences in the pipeline makes everything simpler
IMO.
3) I hoisted the ThinLTO stop point pre-link above the the RPO function
attr inference. The RPO inference won't infer anything terribly
meaningful pre-link (recursiveness?) so it didn't make a lot of
sense. But if the placement of RPO inference starts to matter, we
should move it to the canonicalization phase anyways which seems like
a better place for it (and there is a FIXME to this effect!). But
that seemed a bridge too far for this patch.
If we ever need to parameterize these pipelines more heavily, we can
always sink the logic to helper functions with parameters to keep those
parameters out of the public API. But the changes above seemed minor
that we could possible get away without the parameters entirely.
I added support for parsing 'thinlto' and 'thinlto-pre-link' names in
pass pipelines to make it easy to test these routines and play with them
in larger pipelines. I also added a really basic manifest of passes test
that will show exactly how the pipelines behave and work as well as
making updates to them clear.
Lastly, this factoring does introduce a nesting layer of module pass
managers in the default pipeline. I don't think this is a big deal and
the flexibility of decoupling the pipelines seems easily worth it.

This change allows us to share names between globals and comdats as well

no longer using a bit encoding for symbol names. Once we start writing the
