Vedant Kumar 85696ad91d [bugpoint] Report non-existent opt binary
Bugpoint will keep going even if the opt binary it's given doesn't
exist. It should at least alert the user, so it's clear why reductions
are failing.

Vedant Kumar 67fdb6b82a [bugpoint] Avoid noisy errors by passing a valid opt to tests
If the tests don't use the in-tree opt, we're liable to see some silly

David Blaikie 4a60d370e8 bugpoint: disabling symbolication of bugpoint-executed programs
Initial implementation - needs similar work/testing for other tools
bugpoint invokes (llc, lli I think, maybe more).

Alternatively (as suggested by chandlerc@) an environment variable could
be used. This would allow the option to pass transparently through user
scripts, pass to compilers if they happened to be LLVM-ish, etc.

I worry a bit about using cl::opt in the crash handling code - LLVM
might crash early, perhaps before the cl::opt is properly initialized?
Or at least before arguments have been parsed?

 - should be OK since it defaults to "pretty", so if the crash is very
 early in opt parsing, etc, then crash reports will still be symbolized.

I shyed away from doing this with an environment variable when I
realized that would require copying the existing environment and
appending the env variable of interest. But it seems there's no existing
LLVM API for accessing the environment (even the Support tests for
process launching have their own ifdefs for getting the environment). It
could be added, but seemed like a higher bar/untested codepath to
actually add environment variables.

Most importantly, this reduces the runtime of test/BugPoint/metadata.ll
in a split-dwarf Debug build from 1m34s to 6.5s by avoiding a lot of
symbolication. (this wasn't a problem for non-split-dwarf builds only
because the executable was too large to map into memory (due to bugpoint
setting a 400MB memory (including address space - not sure why? Going to
remove that) limit on the child process) so symbolication would fail
fast & wouldn't spend all that time parsing DWARF, etc)

Michael Ilseman e542804343 Add -strip-nonlinetable-debuginfo capability
This adds a new function to DebugInfo.cpp that takes an llvm::Module
as input and removes all debug info metadata that is not directly
needed for line tables, thus effectively stripping all type and
variable information from the module.

The primary motivation for this feature was the bitcode work flow
(cf. http://lists.llvm.org/pipermail/llvm-dev/2016-June/100643.html
for more background). This is not wired up yet, but will be in
subsequent patches. For testing, the new functionality is exposed to
opt with a -strip-nonlinetable-debuginfo option.

The secondary use-case (and one that works right now!) is as a
reduction pass in bugpoint. I added two new bugpoint options
(-disable-strip-debuginfo and -disable-strip-debug-types) to control
the new features. By default it will first attempt to remove all debug
information, then only the type info, and then proceed to hack at any
remaining MDNodes.

Thanks to Adrian Prantl for stewarding this patch!

Adrian Prantl 919bdf1d4f Disable fatal errors in the Verifier instantiated by bugpoint's crash
debugger.

When bugpoint hacks at a testcase it may at one point create illegal
debug info metadata that won't even pass the Verifier. A bugpoint
*driver* built with assertions should not assert on it, but reject the
malformed intermediate step and continue to do its job.

Adrian Prantl 75819aedf6 [PR27284] Reverse the ownership between DICompileUnit and DISubprogram.
Currently each Function points to a DISubprogram and DISubprogram has a
scope field. For member functions the scope is a DICompositeType. DIScopes
point to the DICompileUnit to facilitate type uniquing.

Distinct DISubprograms (with isDefinition: true) are not part of the type
hierarchy and cannot be uniqued. This change removes the subprograms
list from DICompileUnit and instead adds a pointer to the owning compile
unit to distinct DISubprograms. This would make it easy for ThinLTO to
strip unneeded DISubprograms and their transitively referenced debug info.

Motivation
----------

Materializing DISubprograms is currently the most expensive operation when
doing a ThinLTO build of clang.

We want the DISubprogram to be stored in a separate Bitcode block (or the
same block as the function body) so we can avoid having to expensively
deserialize all DISubprograms together with the global metadata. If a
function has been inlined into another subprogram we need to store a
reference the block containing the inlined subprogram.

Attached to https://llvm.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=27284 is a python script
that updates LLVM IR testcases to the new format.

Keno Fischer 34ca831d9f [bugpoint] Add a named metadata (+their operands) reducer
Summary:
We frequently run bugpoint on a linked module that consists of all
modules we create while jitting the julia standard library. This module
has a very large number of compile units (10000+) in `llvm.dbg.cu`,
which didn't get reduced at all, requiring manual post processing.
This is an attempt to have bugpoint go through and attempt to reduce
the number of global named metadata nodes as well as their operands,
to cut down the number of roots for such metadata.

Mehdi Amini d178f4fc89 Make the default triple optional by allowing an empty string
When building LLVM as a (potentially dynamic) library that can be linked against
by multiple compilers, the default triple is not really meaningful.
We allow to explicitely set it to an empty string when configuring LLVM.
In this case, said "target independent" tests in the test suite that are using
the default triple are disabled by matching the newly available feature
"default_triple".

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith 814b8e91c7 DI: Require subprogram definitions to be distinct
As a follow-up to r246098, require `DISubprogram` definitions
(`isDefinition: true`) to be 'distinct'. Specifically, add an assembler
check, a verifier check, and bitcode upgrading logic to combat testcase
bitrot after the `DIBuilder` change.

While working on the testcases, I realized that
test/Linker/subprogram-linkonce-weak-odr.ll isn't relevant anymore.  Its
purpose was to check for a corner case in PR22792 where two subprogram
definitions match exactly and share the same metadata node. The new
verifier check, requiring that subprogram definitions are 'distinct',
precludes that possibility.

I updated almost all the IR with the following script:

    git grep -l -E -e '= !DISubprogram\(.* isDefinition: true' |
    grep -v test/Bitcode |
    xargs sed -i '' -e 's/= \(!DISubprogram(.*, isDefinition: true\)/= distinct \1/'

Likely some variant of would work for out-of-tree testcases.

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith a9308c49ef IR: Give 'DI' prefix to debug info metadata
Finish off PR23080 by renaming the debug info IR constructs from `MD*`
to `DI*`. The last of the `DIDescriptor` classes were deleted in
r235356, and the last of the related typedefs removed in r235413, so
this has all baked for about a week.

Note: If you have out-of-tree code (like a frontend), I recommend that
you get everything compiling and tests passing with the *previous*
commit before updating to this one. It'll be easier to keep track of
what code is using the `DIDescriptor` hierarchy and what you've already
updated, and I think you're extremely unlikely to insert bugs. YMMV of
course.

Back to *this* commit: I did this using the rename-md-di-nodes.sh
upgrade script I've attached to PR23080 (both code and testcases) and
filtered through clang-format-diff.py. I edited the tests for
test/Assembler/invalid-generic-debug-node-*.ll by hand since the columns
were off-by-three. It should work on your out-of-tree testcases (and
code, if you've followed the advice in the previous paragraph).

Some of the tests are in badly named files now (e.g.,
test/Assembler/invalid-mdcompositetype-missing-tag.ll should be
'dicompositetype'); I'll come back and move the files in a follow-up
commit.

JF Bastien f87e20dd87 bugpoint Enhancement.
Summary:
This patch adds two flags to `bugpoint`: "-replace-funcs-with-null" and "-disable-pass-list-reduction".

When "-replace-funcs-with-null" is specified, bugpoint will, instead of simply deleting function bodies, replace all uses of functions and then will delete functions completely from the test module, correctly handling aliasing and @llvm.used && @llvm.compiler.used. This part was conceived while trying to debug the PNaCl IR simplification passes, which don't allow undefined functions (ie no declarations).

With "-disable-pass-list-reduction", bugpoint won't try to reduce the set of passes causing the "crash". This is needed in cases where one is trying to debug an issue inside the PNaCl IR simplification passes which is causing an PNaCl ABI verification error, for example.

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith e274180f0e DebugInfo: Move new hierarchy into place
Move the specialized metadata nodes for the new debug info hierarchy
into place, finishing off PR22464. I've done bootstraps (and all that)
and I'm confident this commit is NFC as far as DWARF output is
concerned. Let me know if I'm wrong :).

The code changes are fairly mechanical:

  - Bumped the "Debug Info Version".
  - `DIBuilder` now creates the appropriate subclass of `MDNode`.
  - Subclasses of DIDescriptor now expect to hold their "MD"
    counterparts (e.g., `DIBasicType` expects `MDBasicType`).
  - Deleted a ton of dead code in `AsmWriter.cpp` and `DebugInfo.cpp`
    for printing comments.
  - Big update to LangRef to describe the nodes in the new hierarchy.
    Feel free to make it better.

Testcase changes are enormous. There's an accompanying clang commit on
its way.

If you have out-of-tree debug info testcases, I just broke your build.

  - `upgrade-specialized-nodes.sh` is attached to PR22564. I used it to
    update all the IR testcases.
  - Unfortunately I failed to find way to script the updates to CHECK
    lines, so I updated all of these by hand. This was fairly painful,
    since the old CHECKs are difficult to reason about. That's one of
    the benefits of the new hierarchy.

This work isn't quite finished, BTW. The `DIDescriptor` subclasses are
almost empty wrappers, but not quite: they still have loose casting
checks (see the `RETURN_FROM_RAW()` macro). Once they're completely
gutted, I'll rename the "MD" classes to "DI" and kill the wrappers. I
also expect to make a few schema changes now that it's easier to reason
about everything.

David Blaikie 79e6c74981 [opaque pointer type] Add textual IR support for explicit type parameter to getelementptr instruction
One of several parallel first steps to remove the target type of pointers,
replacing them with a single opaque pointer type.

This adds an explicit type parameter to the gep instruction so that when the
first parameter becomes an opaque pointer type, the type to gep through is
still available to the instructions.

* This doesn't modify gep operators, only instructions (operators will be
  handled separately)

* Textual IR changes only. Bitcode (including upgrade) and changing the
  in-memory representation will be in separate changes.

* geps of vectors are transformed as:
    getelementptr <4 x float*> %x, ...
  ->getelementptr float, <4 x float*> %x, ...
  Then, once the opaque pointer type is introduced, this will ultimately look
  like:
    getelementptr float, <4 x ptr> %x
  with the unambiguous interpretation that it is a vector of pointers to float.

* address spaces remain on the pointer, not the type:
    getelementptr float addrspace(1)* %x
  ->getelementptr float, float addrspace(1)* %x
  Then, eventually:
    getelementptr float, ptr addrspace(1) %x

Importantly, the massive amount of test case churn has been automated by
same crappy python code. I had to manually update a few test cases that
wouldn't fit the script's model (r228970,r229196,r229197,r229198). The
python script just massages stdin and writes the result to stdout, I
then wrapped that in a shell script to handle replacing files, then
using the usual find+xargs to migrate all the files.

update.py:
import fileinput
import sys
import re

ibrep = re.compile(r"(^.*?[^%\w]getelementptr inbounds )(((?:<\d* x )?)(.*?)(| addrspace\(\d\)) *\*(|>)(?:$| *(?:%|@|null|undef|blockaddress|getelementptr|addrspacecast|bitcast|inttoptr|\[\[[a-zA-Z]|\{\{).*$))")

  elif line.find("getelementptr ") != line.find("getelementptr ("):
    line = conv(re.match(normrep, line), line)
  sys.stdout.write(line)

apply.sh:

From llvm/src/tools/polly:
find test/ -name *.ll | xargs ./apply.sh

After that, check-all (with llvm, clang, clang-tools-extra, lld,
compiler-rt, and polly all checked out).

The extra 'rm' in the apply.sh script is due to a few files in clang's test
suite using interesting unicode stuff that my python script was throwing
exceptions on. None of those files needed to be migrated, so it seemed
sufficient to ignore those cases.

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith be7ea19b58 IR: Make metadata typeless in assembly
Now that `Metadata` is typeless, reflect that in the assembly. These
are the matching assembly changes for the metadata/value split in
r223802.

  - Only use the `metadata` type when referencing metadata from a call
    intrinsic -- i.e., only when it's used as a `Value`.

  - Stop pretending that `ValueAsMetadata` is wrapped in an `MDNode`
    when referencing it from call intrinsics.

So, assembly like this:

    define @foo(i32 %v) {
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{i32 %v}, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{i32 7}, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata !1, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata !3, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{metadata !3}, metadata !0)
      ret void, !bar !2
    }
    !0 = metadata !{metadata !2}
    !1 = metadata !{i32* @global}
    !2 = metadata !{metadata !3}
    !3 = metadata !{}

turns into this:

    define @foo(i32 %v) {
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata i32 %v, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata i32 7, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata i32* @global, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata !3, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{!3}, metadata !0)
      ret void, !bar !2
    }
    !0 = !{!2}
    !1 = !{i32* @global}
    !2 = !{!3}
    !3 = !{}

Manman Ren d664bd7725 Debug Info: update testing cases to specify the debug info version number.
We are going to drop debug info without a version number or with a different
version number, to make sure we don't crash when we see bitcode files with
different debug info metadata format.

Make tests more robust by removing hard-coded metadata numbers in CHECK lines.

Daniel Dunbar 9efbedfd35 [tests] Cleanup initialization of test suffixes.
- Instead of setting the suffixes in a bunch of places, just set one master
   list in the top-level config. We now only modify the suffix list in a few
   suites that have one particular unique suffix (.ml, .mc, .yaml, .td, .py).

 - Aside from removing the need for a bunch of lit.local.cfg files, this enables
   4 tests that were inadvertently being skipped (one in
   Transforms/BranchFolding, a .s file each in DebugInfo/AArch64 and
   CodeGen/PowerPC, and one in CodeGen/SI which is now failing and has been
   XFAILED).

 - This commit also fixes a bunch of config files to use config.root instead of
   older copy-pasted code.

Manman Ren b75e0c92f3 Debug Info Finder|Verifier: handle DbgLoc attached to instructions.
Also remove checking of llvm.dbg.sp since it is not used in generating dwarf.

Current state of Finder:
DebugInfoFinder tries to list all debug info MDNodes used in a module. To
list debug info MDNodes used by an instruction, DebugInfoFinder provides
processDeclare, processValue and processLocation to handle DbgDeclareInst,
DbgValueInst and DbgLoc attached to instructions. processModule will go
through all DICompileUnits in llvm.dbg.cu and list debug info MDNodes
used by the CUs.

TODO:
1> Finder has a list of CUs, SPs, Types, Scopes and global variables. We
need to add a list of variables that are used by DbgDeclareInst and
DbgValueInst.
2> MDString fields should be null or isa<MDString> and MDNode fields should be
null or isa<MDNode>. We currently use empty string or int 0 to represent null.
3> Go though Verify functions and make sure that they check field types.
4> Clean up existing testing cases to remove llvm.dbg.sp and make sure each
testing case has a llvm.dbg.cu.

Re-apply r187609 with fix to pass ocaml binding. vmcore.ml generates a debug
location with scope being metadata !{}, in verifier we treat this as a null
scope.
