The -n (--nmagic) disables page alignment, and acts as a -Bstatic
The -N (--omagic) does what -n does but also marks the executable segment as
writeable. As page alignment is disabled headers are not allocated unless
explicit in the linker script.
To disable page alignment in LLD we choose to set the page sizes to 1 so
that any alignment based on the page size does nothing. To set the
Target->PageSize to 1 we implement -z common-page-size, which has the side
effect of allowing the user to set the value as well.
Setting the page alignments to 1 does mean that any use of
CONSTANT(MAXPAGESIZE) or CONSTANT(COMMONPAGESIZE) in a linker script will
return 1, unlike in ld.bfd. However given that -n and -N disable paging
these probably shouldn't be used in a linker script where -n or -N is in
use.

These yaml test cases appear to have been affected by PR41836
Right now what happens is that these empty .bss sections are merged into
.data, then the .data output section ends up having a zero virtual size,
and it is discarded from the output after addresses are assigned.
However, we've already assigned OutputSections to Chunks, so we don't
correctly report the zero-sized chunks that were in there as having been
discarded. Soon, we will report them as discarded, so these test cases
need to be updated to have a non-zero size so they aren't discarded.

0x2000000 is the farthest point R_PPC64_REL24 can reach. I tried several

As demonstrated by the updated tests, this essentially changes placement
of most thunks to the end of the output section. We leverage this
property to fix PR40740 reported by Alfredo Dal'Ava Júnior:
The output section .init consists of input sections from several object
files (crti.o crtbegin.o crtend.o crtn.o). Sections other than the last
one do not have a terminator. With this patch, we create the thunk after
the last .init input section and thus fix the issue. This is not
foolproof but works quite well for such sections (with no terminator) in
practice.

Prior to this change, every implementation of writeTo would add
OutputSectionOff to the output section buffer start before writing data.
Instead, do this math in the caller, so that it can be written once
instead of many times.
The output section offset is always equivalent to the difference between
the chunk RVA and the output section RVA, so we can replace the one
remaining usage of OutputSectionOff with that subtraction.
This doesn't change the size of SectionChunk because of alignment
requirements, but I will rearrange the fields in a follow-up change to

Summary:
While the generic ABI requires notes to be 8-byte aligned in ELF64, many
vendor-specific notes (from Linux, NetBSD, Solaris, etc) use 4-byte
alignment.
In a PT_NOTE segment, if 4-byte aligned notes are followed by an 8-byte
aligned note, the possible 4-byte padding may make consumers fail to
parse the 8-byte aligned note. See PR41000 for a recent report about
.note.gnu.property (NT_GNU_PROPERTY_TYPE_0).
(Note, for NT_GNU_PROPERTY_TYPE_0, the consumers should probably migrate
to PT_GNU_PROPERTY, but the alignment issue affects other notes as well.)
To fix the issue, don't mix notes with different alignments in one
PT_NOTE. If compilers emit 4-byte aligned notes before 8-byte aligned
notes, we'll create at most 2 segments.
sh_size%sh_addralign=0 is actually implied by the rule for linking
unrecognized sections (in generic ABI), so we don't have to check that.
Notes that match in name, type and attribute flags are concatenated into
a single output section. The compilers have to ensure
sh_size%sh_addralign=0 to make concatenated notes parsable.
An alternative approach is to create a PT_NOTE for each SHT_NOTE, but
we'll have to incur the sizeof(Elf64_Phdr)=56 overhead every time a new
note section is introduced.

Another attempt to land the changes in debug line header to prevent duplicate
files in Dwarf 5. I rolled back my previous commit because of a mistake in
generating the object file in a test. Meanwhile, I addressed some offline
comments and changed the implementation; the largest difference is that
MCDwarfLineTableHeader does not keep DwarfVersion but gets it as a parameter. I
also merged the patch to fix two lld tests that will strt to fail into this
patch.
Original Commit:
https://reviews.llvm.org/D59515
Original Message:
Motivation: In previous dwarf versions, file name indexes started from 1, and
the primary source file was not explicit. Dwarf 5 standard (6.2.4) prescribes
the primary source file to be explicitly given an entry with an index number 0.
The current implementation honors the specification by just duplicating the
main source file, once with index number 0, and later maybe with another
index number. While this is compliant with the letter of the standard, the
duplication causes problems for consumers of this information such as lldb.
(Some files are duplicated, where only some of them have a line table although
all refer to the same file)
With this change, dwarf 5 debug line section files always start from 0, and
the zeroth entry is not duplicated whenever possible. This requires different
handling of dwarf 4 and dwarf 5 during generation (e.g. when a function returns
an index zero for a file name, it signals an error in dwarf 4, but not in dwarf
5) However, I think the minor complication is worth it, because it enables all
consumers (lldb, gdb, dwarfdump, objdump, and so on) to treat all files in the
file name list homogenously.

This is https://bugs.llvm.org//show_bug.cgi?id=39857.
I added the comment with much more details to the bug page,
the short version is below.
The following script and code demonstrates the issue:
aliasto__text = __text;
SECTIONS {
.text 0x1000 : { __text = . ; *(.text) }
}
...
call aliasto__text
LLD fails with "cannot refer to absolute symbol: aliasto__text" error.
It happens because at the moment of scanning the relocations
we do not yet assign the correct/final/any section value for the symbol aliasto__text.
I made a change to Relocations.cpp to fix that.
Also, I had to remove the symbol-location.s test case completely, because now it does not
trigger any error. Since now all linker scripts symbols are resolved to constants, no
errors can be triggered at all it seems. I checked that it is consistent with the behavior
of bfd and gold (they do not trigger errors for the case from symbol-location.s), so it should
be OK. I.e. at least it is probably not the best possible, but natural behavior we obtained.

One of the samples is:
SECTIONS {
foo = ADDR(.text) - ABSOLUTE(ADDR(.text));
};
In that case, we have a broken output when output target does
not use thunks. That happens because thunks creating code
(called from maybeAddThunks)
calls Script->assignAddresses() at least one more time,
what fixups the values. As a result final symbols values can
be different on AArch64 and x86, for example.
In this patch, I generalize and rename maybeAddThunks to
finalizeAddressDependentContent and now it is used and called

2 reasons this is appealing:
1) Hash is immutable. Live is almost read-only - only written once in MarkLive.cpp where
Hash is not accessed
2) we already discard low bits of Hash to decide ShardID. It doesn't
matter much if we make 32-bit Hash to 31-bit.
For a huge internal clang -O3 executable (1.6GiB),
`Strings` in StringTableBuilder::finalizeStringTable contains at most 310253 elements.
The expected number of pair-wise collisions 2^(-31) * C(310253,2) ~= 22.41 is too small to have a negative impact on performance.
Actually, my benchmark shows there is actually a minor performance improvement.

Patch by Gabriel Smith.
The address for a section would be evaluated before the region was
switched to. Because of this, the position within the region would not
be updated. After the region is swapped to the dot would be set to the
out of date position within the region, undoing the section address
evaluation.
To fix this, the region is swapped to before the section's address is
evaluated. As part of the fallout of this, expandMemoryRegions needed
to be gated in setDot on the condition that the evaluated address is
less than the dot. This is for the case where sections are not listed
from lowest address to highest address.
Finally, a test for the case where sections are listed "out of order"
was added.
Differential Revision: https://reviews.llvm.org/D60744
llvm-svn: 358638
Patch by Nicholas Allegra.
The Mach-O writer calculates the size of load commands multiple times.
First, Util::assignAddressesToSections() (in MachONormalizedFileFromAtoms.cpp)
calculates the size using headerAndLoadCommandsSize() (in
MachONormalizedFileBinaryWriter.cpp), which creates a temporary
MachOFileLayout for the NormalizedFile, only to retrieve its
headerAndLoadCommandsSize. Later, writeBinary() (in
MachONormalizedFileBinaryWriter.cpp) creates a new layout and uses the offsets
from that layout to actually write out everything in the NormalizedFile.
But the NormalizedFile changes between the first computation and the second.
When Util::assignAddressesToSections is called, file.functionStarts is always
empty because Util::addFunctionStarts has not yet been called. Yet
MachOFileLayout decides whether to include a LC_FUNCTION_STARTS command based
on whether file.functionStarts is nonempty. Therefore, the initial computation
always omits it.
Because padding for the __TEXT segment (to make its size a multiple of the
page size) is added between the load commands and the first section, LLD still
generates a valid binary as long as the amount of padding happens to be large
enough to fit LC_FUNCTION_STARTS command, which it usually is.
However, it's easy to reproduce the issue by adding a section of a precise
size. Given foo.c:
__attribute__((section("__TEXT,__foo")))
char foo[0xd78] = {0};
Run:
clang -dynamiclib -o foo.dylib foo.c -fuse-ld=lld -install_name
/usr/lib/foo.dylib
otool -lvv foo.dylib
This should produce:
truncated or malformed object (offset field of section 1 in LC_SEGMENT_64
command 0 not past the headers of the file)
This commit:
- Changes MachOFileLayout to always assume LC_FUNCTION_STARTS is present for
the initial computation, as long as generating LC_FUNCTION_STARTS is
enabled. It would be slightly better to check whether there are actually
any functions, since no LC_FUNCTION_STARTS will be generated if not, but it
doesn't cause a problem if the initial computation is too high.
- Adds a test.
- Adds an assert in MachOFileLayout::writeSectionContent() that we are not
writing section content into the load commands region (which would happen
if the offset was calculated too low due to the initial load commands size
calculation being too low). Adds an assert in
MachOFileLayout::writeLoadCommands to validate a similar situation where
two size-of-load-commands computations are expected to be equivalent.

LLD operates differently, only loading object files from any

This uses a similar hack as in the ELF linker. Here, it moves crtend.o

Patch by Robert O'Callahan.
Rust projects tend to link in all object files from all dependent
libraries and rely on --gc-sections to strip unused code and data.
Unfortunately --gc-sections doesn't currently strip any debuginfo
associated with GC'ed sections, so lld links in the full debuginfo from
all dependencies even if almost all that code has been discarded. See
https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/56068 for some details.
Properly stripping debuginfo for discarded sections would be difficult,
but a simple approach that helps significantly is to mark debuginfo
sections as live only if their associated object file has at least one
live code/data section. This patch does that. In a (contrived but not
totally artificial) Rust testcase linked above, it reduces the final
binary size from 46MB to 5.1MB.

We introduce a new class hierarchy for debug types merging (in DebugTypes.h). The end-goal is to parallelize the type merging - please see the plan in D59226.
Previously, dependency discovery was done on the fly, much later, during the type merging loop. Unfortunately, parallelizing the type merging requires the dependencies to be merged in first, before any dependent ObjFile, thus this early discovery.
The overall intention for this path is to discover debug information dependencies at a much earlier stage, when processing input files. Currently, two types of dependency are supported: PDB type servers (when compiling with MSVC /Zi) and precompiled headers OBJs (when compiling with MSVC /Yc and /Yu). Once discovered, an explicit link is added into the dependent ObjFile, through the new debug types class hierarchy introduced in DebugTypes.h.

Summary:
This should address remaining issues discussed in PR36555.
Currently R_GOT*_FROM_END are exclusively used by x86 and x86_64 to
express relocations types relative to the GOT base. We have
_GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_ (GOT base) = start(.got.plt) but end(.got) !=
start(.got.plt)
This can have problems when _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_ is used as a symbol, e.g.
glibc dl_machine_dynamic assumes _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_ is start(.got.plt),
which is not true.
extern const ElfW(Addr) _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_[] attribute_hidden;
return _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_[0]; // R_X86_64_GOTPC32
In this patch, we
* Change all GOT*_FROM_END to GOTPLT* to fix the problem.
* Add HasGotPltOffRel to denote whether .got.plt should be kept even if
the section is empty.
* Simplify GotSection::empty and GotPltSection::empty by setting
HasGotOffRel and HasGotPltOffRel according to GlobalOffsetTable early.
The change of R_386_GOTPC makes X86::writePltHeader simpler as we don't
have to compute the offset start(.got.plt) - Ebx (it is constant 0).
We still diverge from ld.bfd (at least in most cases) and gold in that
.got.plt and .got are not adjacent, but the advantage doing that is
unclear.

Old: PT_LOAD(.data | PT_GNU_RELRO(.data.rel.ro .bss.rel.ro) | .bss)
New: PT_LOAD(PT_GNU_RELRO(.data.rel.ro .bss.rel.ro) | .data .bss)
The placement of | indicates page alignment caused by PT_GNU_RELRO. The
new layout has simpler rules and saves space for many cases.
Old size: roundup(.data) + roundup(.data.rel.ro)
New size: roundup(.data.rel.ro + .bss.rel.ro) + .data
Other advantages:
* At runtime the 3 memory mappings decrease to 2.
* start(PT_TLS) = start(PT_GNU_RELRO) = start(RW PT_LOAD). This
simplifies binary manipulation tools.
GNU strip before 2.31 discards PT_GNU_RELRO if its
address is not equal to the start of its associated PT_LOAD.
This has been fixed by https://sourceware.org/git/gitweb.cgi?p=binutils-gdb.git;h=f2731e0c374e5323ce4cdae2bcc7b7fe22da1a6f
But with this change, we will be compatible with GNU strip before 2.31
* Before, .got.plt (non-relro by default) was placed before .got (relro
by default), which made it impossible to have _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_

-thread-model=posix with the atomics target feature, which is now
collected on the WebAssemblyTargetMachine along with all other used
features. These collected features will also be used to emit the

The default configuration for the backend is thread-model=posix and no
atomics, which was previously an invalid configuration. This change
makes the default valid because the thread model is ignored.
A side effect of this change is that objects are never emitted with
passive segments. It will instead be up to the linker to decide
whether sections should be active or passive based on whether atomics
are used in the final link.

The reason for this is that DwarfLineTable could not detect section which
corresponds to specified address(because address is the local to the
section). And as the result it could not select proper sequence in the
line table. The fix is to pass SectionIndex with the address. So that it
would be possible to differentiate addresses from various sections. With

MIPS R6 code uses the `R_MIPS_PC26_S2` relocation for calls which might
cross boundaries of non-PIC-to-PIC code. We need to create a LA25 thunks
for that case.
llvm-svn: 354312
The patch solves two tasks:
1. MIPS ABI allows to mix regular and microMIPS code and perform
cross-mode jumps. Linker needs to detect such cases and replace
jump/branch instructions by their cross-mode equivalents.
2. Other tools like dunamic linkers need to recognize cases when dynamic
table entries, e_entry field of an ELF header etc point to microMIPS
symbol. Linker should provide such information.
The first task is implemented in the `MIPS<ELFT>::relocateOne()` method.
New routine `fixupCrossModeJump` detects ISA mode change, checks and
replaces an instruction.
The main problem is how to recognize that relocation target is microMIPS
symbol. For absolute and section symbols compiler or assembler set the
less-significant bit of the symbol's value or sum of the symbol's value
and addend. And this bit signals to linker about microMIPS code. For
global symbols compiler cannot do the same trick because other tools like,
for example, disassembler wants to know an actual position of the symbol.
So compiler sets STO_MIPS_MICROMIPS flag in the `st_other` field.
In `MIPS<ELFT>::relocateOne()` method we have a symbol's value only and
cannot access any symbol's attributes. To pass type of the symbol
(regular/microMIPS) to that routine as well as other places where we
write a symbol value as-is (.dynamic section, `Elf_Ehdr::e_entry` field
etc) we set when necessary a less-significant bit in the `getSymVA`
function.

Turns out nobody understands what "conflicting comdat type" is supposed to
mean, so just emit a regular "duplicate symbol" error and move the comdat
selection information into /verbose output.
This also fixes a problem where the error output would depend on the order of
.obj files passed. Before this patch:
- If passed `one_only.obj discard.obj`, lld-link would only err "conflicting
comdat type"
- If passed `discard.obj one_only.obj`, lld-link would err "conflicting comdat

Now lld-link only errs "duplicate symbol" in both cases.
I considered adding a "Detail" parameter to reportDuplicate() that's printed in

In a previous patch, I made changes so that PDBs which were

it to be supported for certain cross compilation scenarios

However, this regressed a case where you specify /PDBSOURCEPATH

change intentionally tried to support non-backslash paths, this
was broken.
This patch fixes the situation by trying to guess which path
style the user is specifying when /PDBSOURCEPATH is passed.
It is intentionally conservative, erring on the side of a
Windows path style unless absolutely certain. All dots are
removed and slashes canonicalized to whatever the deduced
path style is after appending the file path to the /PDBSOURCEPATH

I realize that this change differs from GNU readelf which does not display the latter information.
I'd rather not add this "feature" under a command line option. I think that might introduce confusion, since users would have to
make an additional decision as to if they want to see all of the section-to-segment map or just a subset of it.
Another option is to only print the "None" line if the `--section-mapping` option is passed; however,
that might also introduce some confusion, because the section-to-segment map would be different between`--program-headers`
and the `--section-mapping` output. While the difference is just the "None" line, it seems that if we choose to display
the segment-to-section mapping, then we should always display the whole map including the sections

For MinGW, unique partial sections are much more common, e.g.
comdat functions get sections named e.g. text$symbol.
A moderate sized example of this contains over 200K Chunks
which create 174K unique PartialSections. Prior to SVN r352928
(D57574), linking this took around 1,5 seconds for me, while
it afterwards takes around 13 minutes. After this patch, the
linking time is back to what it was before.
The std::find_if in findPartialSection will do a linear scan of
the whole container until a match is found. To use something like
binary_search or the std::set container's own methods, we'd need
to already have a PartialSection*.
Reinstate a proper map instead of having a set with a custom sorting

Summary:
In ld.bfd/gold, --no-allow-shlib-undefined is the default when linking
an executable. This patch implements a check to error on undefined
symbols in a shared object, if all of its DT_NEEDED entries are seen.
Our approach resembles the one used in gold, achieves a good balance to
be useful but not too smart (ld.bfd traces all DSOs and emulates the
behavior of a dynamic linker to catch more cases).
The error is issued based on the symbol table, different from undefined
reference errors issued for relocations. It is most effective when there
are DSOs that were not linked with -z defs (e.g. when static sanitizers
runtime is used).
gold has a comment that some system libraries on GNU/Linux may have
spurious undefined references and thus system libraries should be
excluded (https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=6811). The
story may have changed now but we make --allow-shlib-undefined the
default for now. Its interaction with -shared can be discussed in the

cl.exe and clang-cl.exe put vftables in a 'discard' comdat when building with
RTTI disabled (/GR-) but in a 'largest' comdat when building with RTTI enabled.
To be able to link /GR- code with /GR code, lld-link needs to accept comdats
that have this type of comdat selection conflict.
For example, static libraries in the Visual Studio standard library are built
with /GR, and without this it's impossible to build client code with /GR- and
still link to the standard library.
link.exe also accepts merging 'discard' with 'largest', and it accepts merging

LLD used to handle comdats as if the selection field was always set to
IMAGE_COMDAT_SELECT_ANY. This means for obj files produced by `cl /Gy`, LLD
would never report a duplicate symbol error.
This change:
- adds validation for the Selection field (should make no difference in
practice for compiler-generated obj inputs)
- rejects comdats that have different Selection fields in different obj files
(likewise). This is a bit more strict but also more self-consistent thank
link.exe (see comment in code)
- implements handling for all the selection kinds
In practice, compilers only generate comdats with
IMAGE_COMDAT_SELECT_NODUPLICATES (LLD now produces duplicate symbol errors for
these), IMAGE_COMDAT_SELECT_ANY (no behavior change), and
IMAGE_COMDAT_SELECT_LARGEST (for RTTI data; here LLD should no longer create
broken executables when linking some TUs with RTTI enabled and some with it
disabled – but see below).
The implementation of `IMAGE_COMDAT_SELECT_LARGEST` is incomplete: If one
SELECT_LARGEST comdat replaces an earlier one, the comdat symbol is replaced
correctly, but the old section stays loaded and if /opt:ref is disabled (via
/opt:noref or /debug) it's still written to the output. That's not ideal, but
better than the current treatment of just picking any one of those comdats. I
hope to fix this better later.

lld discards .gnu.linonce.* sections work around a bug in glibc.
https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=20543
Unfortunately, the Linux kernel uses a section named
.gnu.linkonce.this_module to store infomation about kernel modules. The
kernel reads data from this section when loading kernel modules, and
errors if it fails to find this section. The current behavior of lld
discards this section when kernel modules are linked, so kernel modules
linked with lld are unloadable by the linux kernel.
The Linux kernel should use a comdat section instead of .gnu.linkonce.
The minimum version of binutils supported by the kernel supports comdat
sections. The kernel is also not relying on the old linkonce behavior;
it seems to have chosen a name that contains a deprecated GNU feature.
Changing the section name now in the kernel would require all kernel
modules to be recompiled to make use of the new section name. Instead,
rather than discarding .gnu.linkonce.*, let's discard the more specific
section name to continue working around the glibc issue while supporting
linking Linux kernel modules.

Small code model global variable access on PPC64 has a very limited range of

range [-0x8000, 0x7FFC] to the toc pointer which points to .got +0x8000, giving
an addressable range of [.got, .got + 0xFFFC]. While user code can be recompiled
with medium and large code models when the binary grows too large for small code
model, there are small code model relocations in the crt files and libgcc.a
which are typically shipped with the distros, and the ABI dictates that linkers
must allow linking of relocatable object files using different code models.
To minimze the chance of relocation overflow, any file that contains a small

Currently, if an associative comdat appears after the comdat it's associated
with it's processed immediately, else it's deferred until the end of the object
file. I found this confusing to think about while working on PR40094, so this
makes it so that associated comdats are always processed at the end of the

Now there's a natural place to reject the associated comdats referring to later

Previously, MemoryBlock automatically extends a requested buffer size to a
multiple of page size because (I believe) doing it was thought to be harmless
and with that you could get more memory (on average 2KiB on 4KiB-page systems)
"for free".
That programming interface turned out to be error-prone. If you request N
bytes, you usually expect that a resulting object returns N for `size()`.
That's not the case for MemoryBlock.
Looks like there is only one place where we take the advantage of
allocating more memory than the requested size. So, with this patch, I
simply removed the automatic size expansion feature from MemoryBlock
and do it on the caller side when needed. MemoryBlock now always
returns a buffer whose size is equal to the requested size.

LLD's performance on PGO instrumented Windows binaries was still not
great even with the fix in D56955; out of the 2m41s linker runtime,
around 2 minutes were still being spent in ICF. I looked into this more
closely and discovered that the vast majority of the runtime was being
spent segregating .pdata sections with the following relocation chain:
.pdata -> identical .text -> unique PGO counter (not eligible for ICF)
This patch causes us to perform 2 rounds of relocation hash
propagation, which allows the hash for the .pdata sections to
incorporate the identifier from the PGO counter. With that, the amount
of time spent in ICF was reduced to about 2 seconds. I also found that
the same change led to a significant ICF performance improvement in a
regular release build of Chromium's chrome_child.dll, where ICF time
was reduced from around 1s to around 700ms.
With the same change applied to the ELF linker, median of 100 runs

I thought that we might want to handle this at a higher level than

create a file whose name is `-` (there's a workaround though; you can
pass `./-` instead of `-`). However, because raw_fd_ostream already

to reflect the new license.
We understand that people may be surprised that we're moving the header
entirely to discuss the new license. We checked this carefully with the
Foundation's lawyer and we believe this is the correct approach.
Essentially, all code in the project is now made available by the LLVM
project under our new license, so you will see that the license headers
include that license only. Some of our contributors have contributed
code under our old license, and accordingly, we have retained a copy of
our old license notice in the top-level files in each project and
repository.
llvm-svn: 351636

files across all LLVM projects in the monorepo to the new license

Critically, note that we do not in any case *remove* the old license
notice or terms, as that remains necessary until we finish the
relicensing process.
I've updated a few license files that refer to the LLVM license to
instead simply refer generically to whatever license the LLVM project is
under, basically trying to minimize confusion.
This is really the culmination of so many people. Chris led the
community discussions, drafted the policy update and organized the
multi-year string of meeting between lawyers across the community to
figure out the strategy. Numerous lawyers at companies in the community
spent their time figuring out initial answers, and then the Foundation's

segment. Both the thread pointer and the TLS segment are aligned to at
least the TLS segment's alignment.
Android/Bionic historically has not supported ELF TLS, and it has
allocated memory after the thread pointer for several Bionic TLS slots
(currently 9 but soon only 8). At least one of these allocations
(TLS_SLOT_STACK_GUARD == 5) is widespread throughout Android/AArch64
binaries and can't be changed.
To reconcile this disagreement about TLS memory layout, set the minimum
alignment for executable TLS segments to 8 words on ARM/AArch64, which
reserves at least 8 words of memory after the TP (2 for the ABI-specified
TCB and 6 for alignment padding). For simplicity, and because lld doesn't
know when it's targeting Android, increase the alignment regardless of
operating system.

This makes it a bit away from the position-dependent behavior (how

ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (as-needed) defines some symbols which resolve undefined references in libc.so.6, it will therefore be added as a DT_NEEDED entry, which isn't necessary.
The test case as-needed-not-in-regular.s emulates the libc.so scenario, where ld.bfd and gold don't add DT_NEEDED for a.so
The relevant code in gold/resolve.cc:

// dynamic object, mark the dynamic object as needed.
if (to->is_from_dynobj() && to->in_reg() && !to->is_undef_binding_weak())
to->object()->set_is_needed();
in_reg() appears to do something similar to IsUsedInRegularObj.

In PDBs, symbol records must be aligned to four bytes. However, in the
object file, symbol records may not be aligned. MSVC does not pad out
symbol records to make sure they are aligned. That means the linker has
to do extra work to insert the padding. Currently, LLD calculates the
required space with alignment, and copies each record one at a time
while padding them out to the correct size. It has a fast path that
avoids this copy when the records are already aligned.
This change fixes a bug in that codepath so that the copy is actually
saved, and tweaks LLVM's symbol record emission to align symbol records.
Here's how things compare when doing a plain clang Release+PDB build:
- objs are 0.65% bigger (negligible)
- link is 3.3% faster (negligible)

ARM Architecture v6m is used by the smallest microcontrollers such as the
cortex-m0. It is Thumb only (no Thumb 2) which prevents it from using the
existing Thumb 2 range extension thunks as these use the Thumb 2 movt/movw
instructions. Range extension thunks are not usually needed for
microcontrollers due to the small amount of flash and ram on the device,
however if code is copied from flash into ram then a range extension thunk
is required to call that code.
This change adds support for v6m range extension thunks. The procedure call
standard APCS permits a thunk to corrupt the intra-procedural scratch
register r12 (referred to as ip in the APCS). Most Thumb instructions do
not permit access to high registers (r8 - r15) so the thunks must spill
some low registers (r0 - r7) to perform the control transfer.

We recently observed that lld tend to consume more memory than gold when

Summary:
This speeds up linking clang.exe/pdb with /DEBUG:GHASH by 31%, from
12.9s to 9.8s.
Symbol records are typically small (16.7 bytes on average), but we
processed them one at a time. CVSymbol is a relatively "large" type. It
wraps an ArrayRef<uint8_t> with a kind an optional 32-bit hash, which we
don't need. Before this change, each DbiModuleDescriptorBuilder would
maintain an array of CVSymbols, and would write them individually with a
BinaryItemStream.
With this change, we now add symbols that happen to appear contiguously
in bulk. For each .debug$S section (roughly one per function), we
allocate two copies, one for relocation, and one for realignment
purposes. For runs of symbols that go in the module stream, which is
most symbols, we now add them as a single ArrayRef<uint8_t>, so the
vector DbiModuleDescriptorBuilder is roughly linear in the number of
.debug$S sections (O(# funcs)) instead of the number of symbol records
(very large).
Some stats on symbol sizes for the curious:
PDB size: 507M
sym bytes: 316,508,016
sym count: 18,954,971
sym byte avg: 16.7
As future work, we may be able to skip copying symbol records in the
linker for realignment purposes if we make LLVM write them aligned into
the object file. We need to double check that such symbol records are
still compatible with link.exe, but if so, it's definitely worth doing,
since my profile shows we spend 500ms in memcpy in the symbol merging
code. We could potentially cut that in half by saving a copy.
Alternatively, we could apply the relocations *after* we iterate the
symbols. This would require some careful re-engineering of the
relocation processing code, though.
