Craig Topper 3b1239d2a8 [TargetLowering][X86] Teach SimplifyDemandedBits to use ShrinkDemandedOp on ISD::SHL nodes.
If the upper bits of the SHL result aren't used, we might be able to use a narrower shift. For example, on X86 this can turn a 64-bit into 32-bit enabling a smaller encoding.

Sanjay Patel 50c3b290ed [x86] make 8-bit shl undesirable
I was looking at a potential DAGCombiner fix for 1 of the regressions in D60278, and it caused severe regression test pain because x86 TLI lies about the desirability of 8-bit shift ops.

We've hinted at making all 8-bit ops undesirable for the reason in the code comment:

// TODO: Almost no 8-bit ops are desirable because they have no actual
// size/speed advantages vs. 32-bit ops, but they do have a major
// potential disadvantage by causing partial register stalls.

...but that leads to massive diffs and exposes all kinds of optimization holes itself.

Nirav Dave d6351340bb [DAGCombiner] If a TokenFactor would be merged into its user, consider the user later.
Summary:
A number of optimizations are inhibited by single-use TokenFactors not
being merged into the TokenFactor using it. This makes we consider if
we can do the merge immediately.

Most tests changes here are due to the change in visitation causing
minor reorderings and associated reassociation of paired memory
operations.

CodeGen tests with non-reordering changes:

X86/aligned-variadic.ll -- memory-based add folded into stored leaq
  value.

X86/constant-combiners.ll -- Optimizes out overlap between stores.

X86/pr40631_deadstore_elision -- folds constant byte store into
  preceding quad word constant store.

Craig Topper 316c58e8f1 [X86] Improve detection of unneeded shift amount masking to also handle the case that the LHS has known zeroes in it
If the LHS has known zeros, the RHS immediate will have had bits removed. So call computeKnownBits to get the known zeroes so we can handle this case.

Craig Topper 55cc7eb5cb [X86] Add test cases to show missed opportunities to remove AND mask from BTC/BTS/BTR instructions when LHS of AND has known zeros.
We can currently remove the mask if the immediate has all ones in the LSBs, but if the LHS of the AND is known zero, then the immediate might have had bits removed.

A similar issue also occurs with shifts and rotates. I'm preparing a common fix for all of them.

Simon Pilgrim 2d0f20cc04 [X86] Handle COPYs of physregs better (regalloc hints)
Enable enableMultipleCopyHints() on X86.

Original Patch by @jonpa:

While enabling the mischeduler for SystemZ, it was discovered that for some reason a test needed one extra seemingly needless COPY (test/CodeGen/SystemZ/call-03.ll). The handling for that is resulted in this patch, which improves the register coalescing by providing not just one copy hint, but a sorted list of copy hints. On SystemZ, this gives ~12500 less register moves on SPEC, as well as marginally less spilling.

Instead of improving just the SystemZ backend, the improvement has been implemented in common-code (calculateSpillWeightAndHint(). This gives a lot of test failures, but since this should be a general improvement I hope that the involved targets will help and review the test updates.

Craig Topper 90317d1d94 [X86] Suppress load folding into and/or/xor if it will prevent matching btr/bts/btc.
This is a follow up to r335753. At the time I forgot about isProfitableToFold which makes this pretty easy.

Craig Topper 812fcb35e7 [X86] Use bts/btr/btc for single bit set/clear/complement of a variable bit position
If we are just modifying a single bit at a variable bit position we can use the BT* instructions to make the change instead of shifting a 1(or rotating a -1) and doing a binop. These instruction also ignore the upper bits of their index input so we can also remove an and if one is present on the index.

Fixes PR37938.
