Richard Smith 1002d10aaa Reject continue/break statements within members of local functions nested within
loop and switch statements, by teaching Scope that a function scope never has
a continue/break parent for the purposes of control flow. Remove the hack in
block and lambda expressions which worked around this by pretending that such
expressions were continue/break scopes.

Remove Scope::ControlParent, since it's unused.

In passing, teach default statements to recover properly from a missing ';', and
add a fixit for same to both default and case labels (the latter already
recovered correctly).

Sebastian Redl a935179ab7 Represent C++ direct initializers as ParenListExprs before semantic analysis
instead of having a special-purpose function.

- ActOnCXXDirectInitializer, which was mostly duplication of
  AddInitializerToDecl (leading e.g. to PR10620, which Eli fixed a few days
  ago), is dropped completely.
- MultiInitializer, which was an ugly hack I added, is dropped again.
- We now have the infrastructure in place to distinguish between
  int x = {1};
  int x({1});
  int x{1};
-- VarDecl now has getInitStyle(), which indicates which of the above was used.
-- CXXConstructExpr now has a flag to indicate that it represents list-
   initialization, although this is not yet used.
- InstantiateInitializer was renamed to SubstInitializer and simplified.
- ActOnParenOrParenListExpr has been replaced by ActOnParenListExpr, which
  always produces a ParenListExpr. Placed that so far failed to convert that
  back to a ParenExpr containing comma operators have been fixed. I'm pretty
  sure I could have made a crashing test case before this.

The end result is a (I hope) considerably cleaner design of initializers.
More importantly, the fact that I can now distinguish between the various
initialization kinds means that I can get the tricky generalized initializer
test cases Johannes Schaub supplied to work. (This is not yet done.)

This commit passed self-host, with the resulting compiler passing the tests. I
hope it doesn't break more complicated code. It's a pretty big change, but one
that I feel is necessary.

Argyrios Kyrtzidis b6c6a58366 Make parsing of objc @implementations more robust.
Parsing of @implementations was based on modifying global state from
the parser; the logic for late parsing of methods was spread in multiple places
making it difficult to have a robust error recovery.

  -it was difficult to ensure that we don't neglect parsing the lexed methods.
  -it was difficult to setup the original objc container context for parsing the lexed methods
   after completing ParseObjCAtImplementationDeclaration and returning to top level context.

Enhance parsing of @implementations by centralizing it in Parser::ParseObjCAtImplementationDeclaration().
ParseObjCAtImplementationDeclaration now returns only after an @implementation is fully parsed;
all the data and logic for late parsing of methods is now in one place.

This allows us to provide code-completion for late parsed methods with mis-matched braces.

Richard Smith 764d2fe666 Unlike in C++03, a constant-expression is not an unevaluated operand in C++11.
Split out a new ExpressionEvaluationContext flag for this case, and don't treat
it as unevaluated in C++11. This fixes some crash-on-invalids where we would
allow references to class members in potentially-evaluated constant expressions
in static member functions, and also fixes half of PR10177.

The fix to PR10177 exposed a case where template instantiation failed to provide
a source location for a diagnostic, so TreeTransform has been tweaked to supply
source locations when transforming a type. The source location is still not very
good, but MarkDeclarationsReferencedInType would need to operate on a TypeLoc to
improve it further.

Also fix MarkDeclarationReferenced in C++98 mode to trigger instantiation for
static data members of class templates which are used in constant expressions.
This fixes a link-time problem, but we still incorrectly treat the member as
non-constant. The rest of the fix for that issue is blocked on PCH support for
early-instantiated static data members, which will be added in a subsequent
patch.

Argyrios Kyrtzidis 41fb2d95a3 Make the Preprocessor more memory efficient and improve macro instantiation diagnostics.
When a macro instantiation occurs, reserve a SLocEntry chunk with length the
full length of the macro definition source. Set the spelling location of this chunk
to point to the start of the macro definition and any tokens that are lexed directly
from the macro definition will get a location from this chunk with the appropriate offset.

For any tokens that come from argument expansion, '##' paste operator, etc. have their
instantiation location point at the appropriate place in the instantiated macro definition
(the argument identifier and the '##' token respectively).
This improves macro instantiation diagnostics:

Before:

t.c:5:9: error: invalid operands to binary expression ('struct S' and 'int')
int y = M(/);
        ^~~~
t.c:5:11: note: instantiated from:
int y = M(/);
          ^

After:

t.c:5:9: error: invalid operands to binary expression ('struct S' and 'int')
int y = M(/);
        ^~~~
t.c:3:20: note: instantiated from:
\#define M(op) (foo op 3);
                ~~~ ^  ~
t.c:5:11: note: instantiated from:
int y = M(/);
          ^
The memory savings for a candidate boost library that abuses the preprocessor are:
- 32% less SLocEntries (37M -> 25M)
- 30% reduction in PCH file size (900M -> 635M)
- 50% reduction in memory usage for the SLocEntry table (1.6G -> 800M)
Richard Trieu 94942b32a3 For code such as:
int f(int x) {
  if (int foo = f(bar)) {}
  return 0;
}
Clang produces the following error messages:
paren_imbalance.cc:2:19: error: use of undeclared identifier 'bar'
  if (int foo = f(bar)) {}
                  ^
paren_imbalance.cc:2:26: error: expected ')'
paren_imbalance.cc:2:6: note: to match this '('
Douglas Gregor 0e7dde535d Implement a new identifier-classification scheme where Sema
performs name lookup for an identifier and resolves it to a
type/expression/template/etc. in the same step. This scheme is
intended to improve both performance (by reducing the number of
redundant name lookups for a given identifier token) and error
recovery (by giving Sema a chance to correct type names before the
parser has decided that the identifier isn't a type name). For
example, this allows us to properly typo-correct type names at the
beginning of a statement:
t.c:6:3: error: use of undeclared identifier 'integer'; did you mean
'Integer'?
  integer *i = 0;
  ^~~~~~~
  Integer
t.c:1:13: note: 'Integer' declared here
typedef int Integer;
            ^
Previously, we wouldn't give a Fix-It because the typo correction
occurred after the parser had checked whether "integer" was a type
name (via Sema::getTypeName(), which isn't allowed to typo-correct)
and therefore decided to parse "integer * i = 0" as an expression. By
typo-correcting earlier, we typo-correct to the type name Integer and
parse this as a declaration.
Moreover, in this context, we can also typo-correct identifiers to
keywords, e.g.,
t.c:7:3: error: use of undeclared identifier 'vid'; did you mean
'void'?
  vid *p = i;
  ^~~
  void
and recover appropriately.
Note that this is very much a work-in-progress. The new
Sema::ClassifyName is only used for expression-or-declaration
disambiguation in C at the statement level. The next steps will be to
make this work for the same disambiguation in C++ (where
functional-style casts make some trouble), then push it
further into the parser to eliminate more redundant name lookups.
Fixes <rdar://problem/7963833> for C and starts us down the path of
<rdar://problem/8172000>.
Douglas Gregor e7c2065379 Push nested-name-specifier source-location information into dependent
template specialization types. This also required some parser tweaks,
since we were losing track of the nested-name-specifier's source
location information in several places in the parser. Other notable
changes this required:
  - Sema::ActOnTagTemplateIdType now type-checks and forms the
    appropriate type nodes (+ source-location information) for an
    elaborated-type-specifier ending in a template-id. Previously, we
    used a combination of ActOnTemplateIdType and
    ActOnTagTemplateIdType that resulted in an ElaboratedType wrapped
    around a DependentTemplateSpecializationType, which duplicated the
    keyword ("class", "struct", etc.) and nested-name-specifier
    storage.
  - Sema::ActOnTemplateIdType now gets a nested-name-specifier, which
    it places into the returned type-source location information.
  - Sema::ActOnDependentTag now creates types with source-location
    information.
Douglas Gregor 29d907de03 When we run into an error parsing or type-checking the left-hand side
of a binary expression, continue on and parse the right-hand side of
the binary expression anyway, but don't call the semantic actions to
type-check. Previously, we would see the error and then, effectively,
skip tokens until the end of the statement.
The result should be more useful recovery, both in the normal case
(we'll actually see errors beyond the first one in a statement), but
it also helps code completion do a much better job, because we do
"real" code completion on the right-hand side of an invalid binary
expression rather than completing with the recovery completion. For
example, given
  x = p->y
if there is no variable named "x", we can still complete after the p->
as a member expression. Along the recovery path, we would have
completed after the "->" as if we were in an expression context, which
is mostly useless.
typically have something like
  NSArray alloc]
where it appears to be a declaration of a variable named "alloc" up
until we see the ']' (or a ':'), and at that point we can't backtrace.
So, we use a combination of syntactic and semantic disambiguation to
treat this as a message send only when the type is an Objective-C type
and it has the syntax of a class message send (which would otherwise
be ill-formed).
part of parser recovery. For example, given:
  a method1:arg];
we detect after parsing the expression "a" that we have the start of a
then parse the remainder as a message send. We'll then give a
diagnostic+fix-it such as:
fixit-objc-message.m:17:3: error: missing '[' at start of message
allows Sema some limited access to the current scope, which we only
use in one way: when Sema is performing some kind of declaration that
is not directly driven by the parser (e.g., due to template
instantiatio or lazy declaration of a member), we can find the Scope
associated with a DeclContext, if that DeclContext is still in the
Douglas Gregor 8d4de67e1d Implement parsing for message sends in Objective-C++. Message sends in
Objective-C++ have a more complex grammar than in Objective-C
(surprise!), because
  (1) The receiver of an instance message can be a qualified name such
  as ::I or identity<I>::type.
  (2) Expressions in C++ can start with a type.
The receiver grammar isn't actually ambiguous; it just takes a bit of
work to parse past the type before deciding whether we have a type or
expression. We do this in two places within the grammar: once for
message sends and once when we're determining whether a []'d clause in
an initializer list is a message send or a C99 designated initializer.
This implementation of Objective-C++ message sends contains one known
extension beyond GCC's implementation, which is to permit a
typename-specifier as the receiver type for a class message, e.g.,
  [typename compute_receiver_type<T>::type method];
Note that the same effect can be achieved in GCC by way of a typedef,
e.g.,
  typedef typename computed_receiver_type<T>::type Computed;
  [Computed method];
so this is merely a convenience.
Note also that message sends still cannot involve dependent types or
values.
Douglas Gregor 0c78ad9665 Rework the Parser-Sema interaction for Objective-C message
sends. Major changes include:
  - Expanded the interface from two actions (ActOnInstanceMessage,
    ActOnClassMessage), where ActOnClassMessage also handled sends to
    "super" by checking whether the identifier was "super", to three
    actions (ActOnInstanceMessage, ActOnClassMessage,
    ActOnSuperMessage). Code completion has the same changes.
  - The parser now resolves the type to which we are sending a class
    message, so ActOnClassMessage now accepts a TypeTy* (rather than
    an IdentifierInfo *). This opens the door to more interesting
    types (for Objective-C++ support).
  - Split ActOnInstanceMessage and ActOnClassMessage into parser
    action functions (with their original names) and semantic
    functions (BuildInstanceMessage and BuildClassMessage,
    respectively). At present, this split is onyl used by
    ActOnSuperMessage, which decides which kind of super message it
    has and forwards to the appropriate Build*Message. In the future,
    Build*Message will be used by template instantiation.
  - Use getObjCMessageKind() within the disambiguation of Objective-C
    message sends vs. array designators.
Two notes about substandard bits in this patch:
  - There is some redundancy in the code in ParseObjCMessageExpr and
  ParseInitializerWithPotentialDesignator; this will be addressed
  shortly by centralizing the mapping from identifiers to type names
  for the message receiver.
  - There is some #if 0'd code that won't likely ever be used---it
  handles the use of 'super' in methods whose class does not have a
  superclass---but could be used to model GCC's behavior more
  closely. This code will die in my next check-in, but I want it in
  Subversion.
Chris Lattner a36ec4243b fix PR6811 by not parsing 'super' as a magic expression in
LookupInObjCMethod.  Doing so allows all sorts of invalid code
to slip through to codegen.  This patch does not change the
AST representation of super, though that would now be a natural
thing to do since it can only be in the receiver position and
in the base of a ObjCPropertyRefExpr.
There are still several ugly areas handling super in the parser,
but this is definitely a step in the right direction.
Douglas Gregor e610adae17 Rework parsing of pseudo-destructor expressions and explicit
destructor calls, e.g.,
  p->T::~T
We now detect when the member access that we've parsed, e.g.,
  p-> or x.
may be a pseudo-destructor expression, either because the type of p or
x is a scalar or because it is dependent (and, therefore, may become a
scalar at template instantiation time).
We then parse the pseudo-destructor grammar specifically:
  ::[opt] nested-name-specifier[opt] type-name :: ∼ type-name
and hand those results to a new action, ActOnPseudoDestructorExpr,
which will cope with both dependent member accesses of destructors and
with pseudo-destructor expressions.
This commit affects the parsing of pseudo-destructors, only; the
semantic actions still go through the semantic actions for member
access expressions. That will change soon.
Douglas Gregor 90d554ecb3 Implement support for parsing pseudo-destructor expression with a nested-name-specifier, e.g.,
typedef int Int;
  int *p;
  p->Int::~Int();
This weakens the invariant that the only types in nested-name-specifiers are tag types (restricted to class types in C++98/03). However, we weaken this invariant as little as possible, accepting arbitrary types in nested-name-specifiers only when we're in a member access expression that looks like a pseudo-destructor expression.
C++ grammatical constructs that show up in top-level (namespace-level)
declarations, member declarations, template declarations, statements,
expressions, conditions, etc. For example, we now provide a pattern
for
  static_cast<type>(expr)
when we can have an expression, or
  using namespace identifier;
when we can have a using directive.
Also, improves the results of code completion at the beginning of a
top-level declaration. Previously, we would see value names (function
names, global variables, etc.); now we see types, namespace names,
etc., but no values.
improvement;  a better solution would do a single lookup whose kind and
Douglas Gregor cabea40ea3 Implement code completion within a function call, triggered after the
opening parentheses and after each comma. We gather the set of visible
overloaded functions, perform "partial" overloading based on the set
of arguments that we have thus far, and return the still-viable
results sorted by the likelihood that they will be the best candidate.
Most of the changes in this patch are a refactoring of the overloading
routines for a function call, since we needed to separate out the
notion of building an overload set (common to code-completion and
normal semantic analysis) and then what to do with that overload
set. As part of this change, I've pushed explicit template arguments
into a few more subroutines.
There is still much more work to do in this area. Function templates
won't be handled well (unless we happen to deduce all of the template
arguments before we hit the completion point), nor will overloaded
function-call operators or calls to member functions.
Douglas Gregor 2436e7116b Initial implementation of a code-completion interface in Clang. In
essence, code completion is triggered by a magic "code completion"
token produced by the lexer [*], which the parser recognizes at
certain points in the grammar. The parser then calls into the Action
object with the appropriate CodeCompletionXXX action.
Sema implements the CodeCompletionXXX callbacks by performing minimal
translation, then forwarding them to a CodeCompletionConsumer
subclass, which uses the results of semantic analysis to provide
code-completion results. At present, only a single, "printing" code
completion consumer is available, for regression testing and
debugging. However, the design is meant to permit other
code-completion consumers.
This initial commit contains two code-completion actions: one for
member access, e.g., "x." or "p->", and one for
nested-name-specifiers, e.g., "std::". More code-completion actions
will follow, along with improved gathering of code-completion results
for the various contexts.
[*] In the current -code-completion-dump testing/debugging mode, the
file is truncated at the completion point and EOF is translated into
"code completion".
Douglas Gregor b7bfe79412 Rewrite of our handling of name lookup in C++ member access expressions, e.g.,
x->Base::f
We no longer try to "enter" the context of the type that "x" points
to. Instead, we drag that object type through the parser and pass it
into the Sema routines that need to know how to perform lookup within
member access expressions.
We now implement most of the crazy name lookup rules in C++
[basic.lookup.classref] for non-templated code, including performing
lookup both in the context of the type referred to by the member
access and in the scope of the member access itself and then detecting
ambiguities when the two lookups collide (p1 and p4; p3 and p7 are
still TODO). This change also corrects our handling of name lookup
within template arguments of template-ids inside the
nested-name-specifier (p6; we used to look into the scope of the
object expression for them) and fixes PR4703.
I have disabled some tests that involve member access expressions
where the object expression has dependent type, because we don't yet
have the ability to describe dependent nested-name-specifiers starting
with an identifier.
compilation, and (hopefully) introduce RAII objects for changing the
"potentially evaluated" state at all of the necessary places within
  - Set the unevaluated/potentially-evaluated context appropriately
    during template instantiation.
  - We now recognize three different states while parsing or
    instantiating expressions: unevaluated, potentially evaluated, and
    potentially potentially evaluated (for C++'s typeid).
  - When we're in a potentially potentially-evaluated context, queue
    up MarkDeclarationReferenced calls in a stack. For C++ typeid
    expressions that are potentially evaluated, we will play back
    these MarkDeclarationReferenced calls when we exit the
    corresponding potentially potentially-evaluated context.
  - Non-type template arguments are now parsed as constant
Chris Lattner f6d1c9c7f0 This is a pretty big cleanup for how invalid decl/type are handle.
This gets rid of a bunch of random InvalidDecl bools in sema, changing
us to use the following approach:
1. When analyzing a declspec or declarator, if an error is found, we
   set a bit in Declarator saying that it is invalid.
2. Once the Decl is created by sema, we immediately set the isInvalid
   bit on it from what is in the declarator.  From this point on, sema
   consistently looks at and sets the bit on the decl.
This gives a very clear separation of concerns and simplifies a bunch
of code.  In addition to this, this patch makes these changes:
1. it renames DeclSpec::getInvalidType() -> isInvalidType().
2. various "merge" functions no longer return bools: they just set the
   invalid bit on the dest decl if invalid.
3. The ActOnTypedefDeclarator/ActOnFunctionDeclarator/ActOnVariableDeclarator
   methods now set invalid on the decl returned instead of returning an
   invalid bit byref.
4. In SemaType, refering to a typedef that was invalid now propagates the
   bit into the resultant type.  Stuff declared with the invalid typedef
   will now be marked invalid.
5. Various methods like CheckVariableDeclaration now return void and set the
   invalid bit on the decl they check.
There are a few minor changes to tests with this, but the only major bad
result is test/SemaCXX/constructor-recovery.cpp.  I'll take a look at this
next.
Douglas Gregor 333489bba3 Initial implementation of parsing, semantic analysis, and template
instantiation for C++ typename-specifiers such as
  typename T::type
The parsing of typename-specifiers is relatively easy thanks to
annotation tokens. When we see the "typename", we parse the
typename-specifier and produce a typename annotation token. There are
only a few places where we need to handle this. We currently parse the
typename-specifier form that terminates in an identifier, but not the
simple-template-id form, e.g.,
  typename T::template apply<U, V>
Parsing of nested-name-specifiers has a similar problem, since at this
point we don't have any representation of a class template
specialization whose template-name is unknown.
Semantic analysis is only partially complete, with some support for
template instantiation that works for simple examples.
2009-03-04 22:30:12 +00:00
Douglas Gregor 87f95b0a6a Introduce code modification hints into the diagnostics system. When we
know how to recover from an error, we can attach a hint to the
diagnostic that states how to modify the code, which can be one of:
  - Insert some new code (a text string) at a particular source
    location
  - Remove the code within a given range
  - Replace the code within a given range with some new code (a text
    string)
Right now, we use these hints to annotate diagnostic information. For
example, if one uses the '>>' in a template argument in C++98, as in
this code:
  template<int I> class B { };
  B<1000 >> 2> *b1;
we'll warn that the behavior will change in C++0x. The fix is to
insert parenthese, so we use code insertion annotations to illustrate
where the parentheses go:
test.cpp:10:10: warning: use of right-shift operator ('>>') in template
argument will require parentheses in C++0x
  B<1000 >> 2> *b1;
         ^
    (        )
Use of these annotations is partially implemented for HTML
diagnostics, but it's not (yet) producing valid HTML, which may be
related to PR2386, so it has been #if 0'd out.
In this future, we could consider hooking this mechanism up to the
rewriter to actually try to fix these problems during compilation (or,
after a compilation whose only errors have fixes). For now, however, I
suggest that we use these code modification hints whenever we can, so
that we get better diagnostics now and will have better coverage when
we find better ways to use this information.
This also fixes PR3410 by placing the complaint about missing tokens
just after the previous token (rather than at the location of the next
token).
Douglas Gregor cbb45d0c65 Cope with use of the token '>>' inside a template argument list, e.g.,
vector<vector<double>> Matrix;
In C++98/03, this token always means "right shift". However, if we're in
a context where we know that it can't mean "right shift", provide a
friendly reminder to put a space between the two >'s and then treat it
as two >'s as part of recovery.
In C++0x, this token is always broken into two '>' tokens.
Douglas Gregor 8bf4205c70 Start processing template-ids as types when the template-name refers
to a class template. For example, the template-id 'vector<int>' now
has a nice, sugary type in the type system. What we can do now:
  - Parse template-ids like 'vector<int>' (where 'vector' names a
    class template) and form proper types for them in the type system.
  - Parse icky template-ids like 'A<5>' and 'A<(5 > 0)>' properly,
    using (sadly) a bool in the parser to tell it whether '>' should
    be treated as an operator or not.
This is a baby-step, with major problems and limitations:
  - There are currently two ways that we handle template arguments
  (whether they are types or expressions). These will be merged, and,
  most likely, TemplateArg will disappear.
  - We don't have any notion of the declaration of class template
  specializations or of template instantiations, so all template-ids
  are fancy names for 'int' :)
Douglas Gregor 55297ac499 Don't explicitly represent OverloadedFunctionDecls within
DeclContext. Instead, just keep the list of currently-active
declarations and only build the OverloadedFunctionDecl when we
absolutely need it.
This is a half-step toward eliminating the need to explicitly build
OverloadedFunctionDecls that store sets of overloaded
functions. This was suggested by Argiris a while back, and it's a good
thing for several reasons: first, it eliminates the messy logic that
currently tries to keep the OverloadedFunctionDecl in sync with the
declarations that are being added. Second, it will (eventually)
eliminate the need to allocate memory for overload sets, which could
help performance. Finally, it helps set us up for when name lookup can
return multiple (possibly ambiguous) results, as can happen with
lookup of class members in C++.
Next steps: make the IdentifierResolver store overloads as separate
entries in its list rather than replacing them with an
OverloadedFunctionDecl now, then see how far we can go toward
eliminating OverloadedFunctionDecl entirely.
operators. For example, one can now write "x + y" where x or y is a
The other kinds of overloadable operators in C++ will follow this same
approach.
Three major issues remain:
  1) We don't find member operators
  2) Since we don't have user-defined conversion operators, we can't
  call any of the built-in overloaded operators in C++ [over.built].
  3) Once we've done the semantic checks, we drop the overloaded
  operator on the floor; it doesn't get into the AST at all.
Douglas Gregor 11d0c4c098 Parsing, ASTs, and semantic analysis for the declaration of overloaded
operators in C++. Overloaded operators can be called directly via
their operator-function-ids, e.g., "operator+(foo, bar)", but we don't
yet implement the semantics of operator overloading to handle, e.g.,
"foo + bar".
Argyrios Kyrtzidis 857fcc2f8e Add support for C++'s "type-specifier ( expression-list )" expression:
-The Parser calls a new "ActOnCXXTypeConstructExpr" action.
-Sema, depending on the type and expressions number:
   -If the type is a class, it will treat it as a class constructor. [TODO]
   -If there's only one expression (i.e. "int(0.5)" ), creates a new "CXXFunctionalCastExpr" Expr node
   -If there are no expressions (i.e "int()" ), creates a new "CXXZeroInitValueExpr" Expr node.
Chris Lattner 7a51313d8a Make a major restructuring of the clang tree: introduce a top-level
lib dir and move all the libraries into it.  This follows the main
llvm tree, and allows the libraries to be built in parallel.  The
top level now enforces that all the libs are built before Driver,
but we don't care what order the libs are built in.  This speeds
up parallel builds, particularly incremental ones.
