David Blaikie c905b9decd Change test/CodeGenCXX/debug-info-method.cpp an IR (rather than asm) test.
Referring back to the original commit (r115090) which was a frontend only test
I adjusted this test to verify the frontend change that was made, to emit the
protected access value in the flags metadata field.

Rafael Espindola 54606d57a2 Add 171048 back but invalidate the cache of all redeclarations when setting
the body of a functions. The problem was that hasBody looks at the entire chain
and causes problems to -fvisibility-inlines-hidden if the cache was not
invalidated.

Original message:

Cache visibility of decls.

This unifies the linkage and visibility caching. I first implemented this when
working on pr13844, but the previous fixes removed the performance advantage of
this one.
This is still a step in the right direction for making linkage and visibility
cheap to use.

David Blaikie 831c9927e8 Debug Info: Emit vtables pointer members as artificial.
I wasn't sure where to put the test case for this, but this seemed like as good
a place as any. I had to reorder the tests here to make them legible while
still matching the order of metadata output in the IR file (for some reason
making it virtual changed the ordering).

Relevant commit to fix up LLVM to actually respect 'artificial' member
variables is coming once I write up a test case for it.

Chandler Carruth e8f7a95941 Add a test case that I've been using to clarify the bitfield layout for
both LE and BE targets.

AFAICT, Clang get's this correct for PPC64. I've compared it to GCC 4.8
output for PPC64 (thanks Roman!) and to my limited ability to read power
assembly, it looks functionally equivalent. It would be really good to
fill in the assertions on this test case for x86-32, PPC32, ARM, etc.,
but I've reached the limit of my time and energy... Hopefully other
folks can chip in as it would be good to have this in place to test any
subsequent changes.

To those who care about PPC64 performance, a side note: there is some
*obnoxiously* bad code generated for these test cases. It would be worth
someone's time to sit down and teach the PPC backend to pattern match
these IR constructs better. It appears that things like '(shr %foo,
<imm>)' turn into 'rldicl R, R, 64-<imm>, <imm>' or some such. They
don't even get combined with other 'rldicl' instructions *immediately
adjacent*. I'll add a couple of these patterns to the README, but
I think it would be better to look at all the patterns produced by this
and other bitfield access code, and systematically build up a collection
of patterns that efficiently reduce them to the minimal code.

Chandler Carruth fd8eca202f Fix the bitfield record layout in codegen for big endian targets.
This was an egregious bug due to the several iterations of refactorings
that took place. Size no longer meant what it original did by the time
I finished, but this line of code never got updated. Unfortunately we
had essentially zero tests for this in the regression test suite. =[

I've added a PPC64 run over the bitfield test case I've been primarily
using. I'm still looking at adding more tests and making sure this is
the *correct* bitfield access code on PPC64 linux, but it looks pretty
close to me, and it is *worlds* better than before this patch as it no
longer asserts! =] More commits to follow with at least additional tests
and maybe more fixes.

Sorry for the long breakage due to this....

Chandler Carruth ff0e3a1e1c Rework the bitfield access IR generation to address PR13619 and
generally support the C++11 memory model requirements for bitfield
accesses by relying more heavily on LLVM's memory model.

The primary change this introduces is to move from a manually aligned
and strided access pattern across the bits of the bitfield to a much
simpler lump access of all bits in the bitfield followed by math to
extract the bits relevant for the particular field.

This simplifies the code significantly, but relies on LLVM to
intelligently lowering these integers.

I have tested LLVM's lowering both synthetically and in benchmarks. The
lowering appears to be functional, and there are no really significant
performance regressions. Different code patterns accessing bitfields
will vary in how this impacts them. The only real regressions I'm seeing
are a few patterns where the LLVM code generation for loads that feed
directly into a mask operation don't take advantage of the x86 ability
to do a smaller load and a cheap zero-extension. This doesn't regress
any benchmark in the nightly test suite on my box past the noise
threshold, but my box is quite noisy. I'll be watching the LNT numbers,
and will look into further improvements to the LLVM lowering as needed.

Bill Wendling 751afdc3d1 Use the 'count' attribute to calculate the upper bound of an array.
The count attribute is more accurate with regards to the size of an array. It
also obviates the upper bound attribute in the subrange. We can also better
handle an unbound array by setting the count to -1 instead of the lower bound to
1 and upper bound to 0.

The count field is necessary because there isn't a difference between the 'lo'
and 'hi' attributes for a one-element array and a zero-element array. When the
count is '0', we know that this is a zero-element array. When it's >=1, then
it's a normal constant sized array. When it's -1, then the array is unbounded.

David Blaikie 095deba533 Provide the correct mangling and linkage for certain unnamed nested classes.
This corrects the mangling and linkage of classes (& their member functions) in
cases like this:

  struct foo {
    struct {
      void func() { ... }
    } x;
  };

we were accidentally giving this nested unnamed struct 'no' linkage where it
should've had the linkage of the outer class. The mangling was incorrecty too,
mangling as TU-wide unnamed type mangling of $_X rather than class-scoped
mangling of UtX_.

This also fixes -Wunused-member-function which would incorrectly diagnose
'func' as unused due to it having no linkage & thus appearing to be TU-local
when in fact it might be correctly used in another TU.

Similar mangling should be applied to function local classes in similar cases
but I've deferred that for a subsequent patch.

Richard Smith 3e056dea1b -fcatch-undefined-behavior: add the -ftrapv checks to the set of things caught
by this mode, and also check for signed left shift overflow. The rules for the
latter are a little subtle:

 * neither C89 nor C++98 specify the behavior of a signed left shift at all
 * in C99 and C11, shifting a 1 bit into the sign bit has undefined behavior
 * in C++11, with core issue 1457, shifting a 1 bit *out* of the sign bit has
   undefined behavior

As of this change, we use the C99 rules for all C language variants, and the
C++11 rules for all C++ language variants. Once we have individual
-fcatch-undefined-behavior= flags, this should be revisited.

was mistakenly classifying dynamic_casts which might throw as having no side
effects.

Switch it from a visitor to a switch, so it is kept up-to-date as future Expr
nodes are added. Move it from ExprConstant.cpp to Expr.cpp, since it's not
really related to constant expression evaluation.

Since we use HasSideEffect to determine whether to emit an unused global with
internal linkage, this has the effect of suppressing emission of globals in
some cases.

expression has side-effects. I'll leave it to someone with better knowledge

2012-07-28 02:51:03 +00:00
Richard Smith d3b5c90865 Final piece of core issue 1330: delay computing the exception specification of
a defaulted special member function until the exception specification is needed
(using the same criteria used for the delayed instantiation of exception
specifications for function temploids).

EST_Delayed is now EST_Unevaluated (using 1330's terminology), and, like
EST_Uninstantiated, carries a pointer to the FunctionDecl which will be used to
resolve the exception specification.

This is enabled for all C++ modes: it's a little faster in the case where the
exception specification isn't used, allows our C++11-in-C++98 extensions to
work, and is still correct for C++98, since in that mode the computation of the
exception specification can't fail.

The diagnostics here aren't great (in particular, we should include implicit
evaluation of exception specifications for defaulted special members in the
template instantiation backtraces), but they're not much worse than before.

Our approach to the problem of cycles between in-class initializers and the
exception specification for a defaulted default constructor is modified a
little by this change -- we now reject any odr-use of a defaulted default
constructor if that constructor uses an in-class initializer and the use is in
an in-class initialzer which is declared lexically earlier. This is a closer
approximation to the current draft solution in core issue 1351, but isn't an
exact match (but the current draft wording isn't reasonable, so that's to be
expected).

John McCall 8b3f5ffb0a Change the mangling of a ref-qualifier on a function type so that
it is placed in a position which is never ambiguous with a
reference-to-function type. This follows some recent discussion
and ensuing proposal on cxx-abi-dev. It is not necessary to
change the mangling of CV-qualifiers because you cannot
apply CV-qualification in the normal sense to a function type.
It is not necessary to change the mangling of ref-qualifiers on
method declarations because they appear in an unambiguous
location.

In addition, mangle CV-qualifiers and ref-qualifiers on function
types when they occur in positions other than member pointers
(that is, when they appear as template arguments).

This is a minor ABI break with previous releases of clang. It
is not considered critical because (1) ref-qualifiers are
relatively rare, since AFAIK we're the only implementing compiler,
and (2) they're particularly likely to come up in contexts that
do not rely on the ODR for correctness. We apologize for any
inconvenience; this is the right thing to do.

David Blaikie 7afed5e5bf PR12710 - broken default argument handling for templates.
I broke this in r155838 by not actually instantiating non-dependent default arg
expressions. The motivation for that change was to avoid producing duplicate
conversion warnings for such default args (we produce them once when we parse
the template - there's no need to produce them at each instantiation) but
without actually instantiating the default arg, things break in weird ways.

Technically, I think we could still get the right diagnostic experience without
the bugs if we instantiated the non-dependent args (for non-dependent params
only) immediately, rather than lazily. But I'm not sure if such a refactoring/
change would be desirable so here's the conservative fix for now.

Richard Smith f623c96260 Implement DR1330 in C++11 mode, to support libstdc++4.7 which uses it.
We have a new flavor of exception specification, EST_Uninstantiated. A function
type with this exception specification carries a pointer to a FunctionDecl, and
the exception specification for that FunctionDecl is instantiated (if needed)
and used in the place of the function type's exception specification.

When a function template declaration with a non-trivial exception specification
is instantiated, the specialization's exception specification is set to this
new 'uninstantiated' kind rather than being instantiated immediately.

Expr::CanThrow has migrated onto Sema, so it can instantiate exception specs
on-demand. Also, any odr-use of a function triggers the instantiation of its
exception specification (the exception specification could be needed by IRGen).
In passing, fix two places where a DeclRefExpr was created but the corresponding
function was not actually marked odr-used. We used to get away with this, but
don't any more.

Also fix a bug where instantiating an exception specification which refers to
function parameters resulted in a crash. We still have the same bug in default
arguments, which I'll be looking into next.

This, plus a tiny patch to fix libstdc++'s common_type, is enough for clang to
parse (and, in very limited testing, support) all of libstdc++4.7's standard
headers.

Douglas Gregor 3024f07c12 Implement C++11 [expr.prim.general]p3, which permits the use of 'this'
in the declaration of a non-static member function after the
(optional) cv-qualifier-seq, which in practice means in the exception
specification and late-specified return type.

The new scheme here used to manage 'this' outside of a member function
scope is more general than the Scope-based mechanism previously used
for non-static data member initializers and late-parsesd attributes,
because it can also handle the cv-qualifiers on the member
function. Note, however, that a separate pass is required for static
member functions to determine whether 'this' was used, because we
might not know that we have a static function until after declaration
matching.

Finally, this introduces name mangling for 'this' and for the implicit
'this', which is intended to match GCC's mangling. Independent
verification for the new mangling test case would be appreciated.

These patches cause us to miscompile and/or reject code with static
function-local variables in an extern-C context. Previously, we were
papering over this as long as the variables are within the same
translation unit, and had not seen any failures in the wild. We still
need a proper fix, which involves mangling static locals inside of an
extern-C block (as GCC already does), but this patch causes pretty
widespread regressions. Firefox, and many other applications no longer
build.

Lots of test cases have been posted to the list in response to this

John McCall 947c1830e4 When emitting a static local variable in C++, handle
the case that the variable already exists. Partly this is just
protection against people making crazy declarations with custom
asm labels or extern "C" names that intentionally collide with
the manglings of such variables, but the main reason is that we
can actually emit a static local variable twice with the
requirement that it match up. There may be other cases with
(e.g.) the various nested functions, but the main exemplar is
with constructor variants, where we can be forced into
double-emitting the function body under certain circumstances
like (currently) the presence of virtual bases.

Chandler Carruth 8b4140d712 Move the emission of strict enum range metadata behind a flag (the same
flag as GCC uses: -fstrict-enums). There is a *lot* of code making
unwarranted assumptions about the underlying type of enums, and it
doesn't seem entirely reasonable to eagerly break all of it.

Much more importantly, the current state of affairs is *very* good at
optimizing based upon this information, which causes failures that are
very distant from the actual enum. Before we push for enabling this by
default, I think we need to implement -fcatch-undefined-behavior support
for instrumenting and trapping whenever we store or load a value outside
of the range. That way we can track down the misbehaving code very
quickly.

I discussed this with Rafael, and currently the only important cases he
is aware of are the bool range-based optimizations which are staying
hard enabled. We've not seen any issue with those either, and they are
much more important for performance.

Chandler Carruth 13332ee518 Relax the FileCheck assertions in this test a touch. Previously the test
relied on an artifact of how the inliner and subsequent passes in
clang's -O3 mode happen to treat basic blocks and the labels for the
basic blocks. In my work on the inliner, and changed this fundamental
assumption, and the label that was being checked on the entry basic
block will no longer appear in opt builds. There was no reason to expect
the label to always be present anyways, much to my regret.

I've changed the test to just ensure that we return an immediate
constant. If there are intervening instructions, that's bad, but not
really that relevant to the test.

I'd love it if others have a better way of checking that a function body
contains only a 'ret' instruction that isn't dependent on whether or not
the entry block receives a label...

in vtable layout where virtual methods inherited from virtual bases
could be assigned the same vcall adjustment slot if they shared

analysis to make the AST representation testable. They are represented by a
new UserDefinedLiteral AST node, which is a sugared CallExpr. All semantic
properties, including full CodeGen support, are achieved for free by this
representation.

UserDefinedLiterals can never be dependent, so no custom instantiation
behavior is required. They are mangled as if they were direct calls to the
underlying literal operator. This matches g++'s apparent behavior (but not its
actual mangling, which is broken for literal-operator-ids).

User-defined *string* literals are now fully-operational, but the semantic
analysis is quite hacky and needs more work. No other forms of user-defined

Rafael Espindola 189fa748ec Fix a small difference in sema and codegen views of what needs to be output.
In the included testcase, soma thinks that we already have a definition after we
see the out of line decl. Codegen puts it in a deferred list, to be output if
a use is seen. This would break when we saw an explicit template instantiation
definition, since codegen would not be notified.

This patch adds a method to the consumer interface so that soma can notify
codegen that this decl is now required.

trivial if the implicit declaration would be. Don't forget to set the Trivial
flag on the special member as well as on the class. It doesn't seem ideal that
we have two separate mechanisms for storing this information, but this patch

This leaves us in an interesting position where the has_trivial_X trait for a

Douglas Gregor 7fcbd902b4 Implement name mangling for lambda expressions that occur within the
default arguments of function parameters. This simple-sounding task is
complicated greatly by two issues:

  (1) Default arguments aren't actually a real context, so we need to
maintain extra state within lambda expressions to track when a
lambda was actually in a default argument.
  (2) At the time that we parse a default argument, the FunctionDecl
doesn't exist yet, so lambda closure types end up in the enclosing
context. It's not clear that we ever want to change that, so instead
we introduce the notion of the "effective" context of a declaration
for the purposes of name mangling.

name mangling in the Itanium C++ ABI for lambda expressions is so
dependent on context, we encode the number used to encode each lambda

Sebastian Redl c83ed8248e Basic code generation support for std::initializer_list.
We now generate temporary arrays to back std::initializer_list objects
initialized with braces. The initializer_list is then made to point at
the array. We support both ptr+size and start+end forms, although
the latter is untested.

Array lifetime is correct for temporary std::initializer_lists (e.g.
call arguments) and local variables. It is untested for new expressions
and member initializers.

Things left to do:
Massively increase the amount of testing. I need to write tests for
start+end init lists, temporary objects created as a side effect of
initializing init list objects, new expressions, member initialization,
creation of temporary objects (e.g. std::vector) for initializer lists,
and probably more.
Get lifetime "right" for member initializers and new expressions. Not
that either are very useful.

Douglas Gregor 355efbb2e0 Rework the Sema/AST/IRgen dance for the lambda closure type's
conversion to function pointer. Rather than having IRgen synthesize
the body of this function, we instead introduce a static member
function "__invoke" with the same signature as the lambda's
operator() in the AST. Sema then generates a body for the conversion
to function pointer which simply returns the address of __invoke. This
approach makes it easier to evaluate a call to the conversion function
as a constant, makes the linkage of the __invoke function follow the
normal rules for member functions, and may make life easier down the
road if we ever want to constexpr'ify some of lambdas.

Note that IR generation is responsible for filling in the body of
__invoke (Sema just adds a dummy body), because the body can't
generally be expressed in C++.

"Add a completed/incomplete type difference. This allows us to have
partial types for contexts and forward decls while allowing us to
complete types later on for debug purposes.

This piggy-backs on the metadata replacement and rauw changes
for temporary nodes and takes advantage of the incremental
support I added in earlier. This allows us to, if we decide,
to limit adding methods and variables to structures in order
to limit the amount of debug information output into a .o file.

The caching is a bit complicated though so any thoughts on
    untangling that are welcome."

with a fix:

 - Remove all RAUW during type construction by adding stub versions
of types that we later complete.

and some TODOs:

 - Add an RAUW cache for forward declared types so that we can replace
them at the end of compilation.
 - Remove the code that updates on completed types because we no
longer need to have that happen. We emit incomplete types on
purpose and only want to know when we want to complete them.
