On Hexagon, breakpoints need to be on the first instruction of a packet.
When the LLVM disassembler for Hexagon returned 32 bit instructions, we
needed code to find the start of the current packet. Now that the LLVM

have the first instruction of the packet. Remove the packet traversal code
because it can cause problems when the next packet has more than one

Jonas Devlieghere 4add853647 [lldb] Improve platform handling in CreateTargetInternal
Currently, `target create` has no --platform option. However,
TargetList::CreateTargetInternal which is called under the hood, will
return an error when either no platform or multiple matching platforms
are found, saying that a platform should be specified with --platform.

This patch adds the platform option, but that doesn't solve either of
these errors.

 - If more than one platform matches, specifying the platform isn't
   going to fix that. The current code will only look at the
   architecture instead. I've updated the error message to ask the user
   to specify an architecture.

 - If no architecture is found, specifying a new one via platform isn't
   going to change that either because we already try to find one that
   matches the given architecture.

Raphael Isemann 5477fbc294 [lldb] Make deleting frame recognizers actually work
Summary:

Frame recognizers are stored alongside a flag that indicates whether they were
deleted by the user. If the flag is set, they are supposed to be ignored by the
rest of the frame recognizer code. 'frame recognizer delete' is supposed to set
that flag. 'frame recognizer clear' however actually deletes all frame
recognizers (so, it doesn't set the flag but directly deletes them from the
list).

The current implementation of this concept is pretty broken. `frame recognizer
delete` sets the flag, but it somehow thinks that the recognizer id is an index
in the recognizer list. That's not true as it's actually just a member of each
recognizer entry. So it actually just sets the `deleted` flag for a random other
recognizer. The tests for the recognizer still pass as `frame recognizer list`
is also broken and just completely ignored the `deleted` flag and lists all
recognizers. Also `frame recognizer delete` just ignores if it can't actually
delete a recognizer if the id is invalid.

I think we can simplify this whole thing by just actually deleting recognizers
instead of making sure all code is actually respecting the `deleted` flag. I
assume the intention of this was to make sure that all recognizers are getting
unique ids over the course of an LLDB session, but as `clear` is actually
deleting them and we keep recycling ids, that didn't really work to begin with.

This patch deletes the `deleted` flag and just actually deletes the stored
recognizer. Also adds the missing error message in case it find a recognizer
with a given id.

Raphael Isemann 1b7c9eae6d [lldb] Store StackFrameRecognizers in the target instead of a global list
Summary:

Currently the frame recognizers are stored in a global list (the list in the
StackFrameRecognizersManagerImpl singleton to be precise). All commands and
plugins that modify the list are just modifying that global list of recognizers
which is shared by all Target and Debugger instances.

This is clearly against the idea of LLDB being usable as a library and it also
leads to some very obscure errors as now multiple tests are sharing the used
frame recognizers. For example D83400 is currently failing as it reorders some
test_ functions which permanently changes the frame recognizers of all
debuggers/targets. As all frame recognizers are also initialized in a 'once'
guard, it's also impossible to every restore back the original frame recognizers
once they are deleted in a process.

This patch just moves the frame recognizers into the current target. This seems
the way everyone assumes the system works as for example the assert frame
recognizers is using the current target to find the function/so-name to look for
(which only works if the recognizers are stored in the target).

Encountered the following situation: Let we started thread T1 and it hit
breakpoint on B1 location. We suspended T1 and continued the process.
Then we started thread T2 which hit for example the same location B1.
This time in a breakpoint callback we decided not to stop returning
false.

Expected result: process continues (as if T2 did not hit breakpoint) its
workflow with T1 still suspended. Actual result: process do stops (as if
T2 callback returned true).

Solution: We need invalidate StopInfo for threads that was previously
suspended just because something that is already inactive can not be the
reason of stop. Thread::GetPrivateStopInfo() may be appropriate place to
do it, because it gets called (through Thread::GetStopInfo()) every time
before process reports stop and user gets chance to change
m_resume_state again i.e if we see m_resume_state == eStateSuspended
it definitely means it was set during previous stop and it also means
this thread can not be stopped again (cos' it was frozen during
previous stop).

Pavel Labath 0081149f96 [lldb/DWARF] Fix PC value for artificial tail call frames for the "GNU" case
Summary:
The way that the support for the GNU dialect of tail call frames was
implemented in D80519 meant that the were reporting very bogus PC values
which pointed into the middle of an instruction: the -1 trick is
necessary for the address to resolve to the right function, but we
should still be reporting a more realistic PC value -- I say "realistic"
and not "real", because it's very debatable what should be the correct
PC value for frames like this.

This patch achieves that my moving the -1 from SymbolFileDWARF into the
stack frame computation code. The idea is that SymbolFileDWARF will
merely report whether it has provided an address of the instruction
after the tail call, or the address of the call instruction itself. The
StackFrameList machinery uses this information to set the "behaves like
frame zero" property of the artificial frames (the main thing this flag
does is it controls the -1 subtraction when looking up the function
address).

This required a moderate refactor of the CallEdge class, because it was
implicitly assuming that edges pointing after the call were real calls
and those pointing the the call insn were tail calls. The class now
carries this information explicitly -- it carries three mostly
independent pieces of information:
- an address of interest in the caller
- a bit saying whether this address points to the call insn or after it
- whether this is a tail call

But, it seems that this method are not parsing the executable module symbols.
To fix this I added PreloadSymbols call for executable module to target creation method.

This patch also fixes a problem where the DynamicLoader would reset a

Jaroslav Sevcik cf5ed6dc59 Fix error handling after [<index>] in 'frame variable'

This fixes a bug where

The fix simplifies the termination condition of the expression path parsing loop to check if have a non-empty remaining string to parse. Previously, the condition checked if a separator was found. That condition coincided with the remaining string-to-parse condition except for the buggy indexed case where non-empty string was left ("+5" in the example above), but the separator index was 'npos'.

Vedant Kumar a37caebc2d [lldb/DataFormatters] Delete GetStringPrinterEscapingHelper
Summary:
Languages can have different ways of formatting special characters.
E.g. when debugging C++ code a string might look like "\b", but when
debugging Swift code the same string would look like "\u{8}".

To make this work, plugins override GetStringPrinterEscapingHelper.
However, because there's a large amount of subtly divergent work done in
each override, we end up with large amounts of duplicated code. And all
the memory smashers fixed in one copy of the logic (see D73860) don't
get fixed in the others.

IMO the GetStringPrinterEscapingHelper is overly general and hard to
use. I propose deleting it and replacing it with an EscapeStyle enum,
which can be set as needed by each plugin.

A fix for some swift-lldb memory smashers falls out fairly naturally
from this deletion (https://github.com/apple/llvm-project/pull/1046). As
the swift logic becomes really tiny, I propose moving it upstream as
part of this change. I've added unit tests to cover it.

Raphael Isemann 203a8adb65 [lldb] Add option to retry Fix-Its multiple times to failed expressions
Summary:
Usually when Clang emits an error Fix-It it does two things. It emits the diagnostic and then it fixes the
currently generated AST to reflect the applied Fix-It. While emitting the diagnostic is easy to implement,
fixing the currently generated AST is often tricky. That causes that some Fix-Its just keep the AST as-is or
abort the parsing process entirely. Once the parser stopped, any Fix-Its for the rest of the expression are
not detected and when the user manually applies the Fix-It, the next expression will just produce a new
Fix-It.

This is often occurring with quickly made Fix-Its that are just used to bridge temporary API changes
and that often are not worth implementing a proper API fixup in addition to the diagnostic. To still
give some kind of reasonable user-experience for users that have these Fix-Its and rely on them to
fix their expressions, this patch adds the ability to retry parsing with applied Fix-Its multiple time to
give the normal Fix-It experience where things Clang knows how to fix are not causing actual expression
error (at least when automatically applying Fix-Its is activated).

The way this is implemented is just by having another setting in the expression options that specify how
often we should try applying Fix-Its and then reparse the expression. The default setting is still 1 for everyone
so this should not affect the speed in which we fail to parse expressions.

Vedant Kumar 03e29e2c19 [lldb/DWARF] Reland: Use DW_AT_call_pc to determine artificial frame address
Reland with changes: the test modified in this change originally failed
on a Debian/x86_64 builder, and I suspect the cause was that lldb looked
up the line location for an artificial frame by subtracting 1 from the
frame's address. For artificial frames, the subtraction must not happen
because the address is already exact.

---

lldb currently guesses the address to use when creating an artificial
frame (i.e., a frame constructed by determining the sequence of (tail)
calls which must have happened).

Guessing the address creates problems -- use the actual address provided
by the DW_AT_call_pc attribute instead.

Fred Riss b4a6e63ea1 [lldb/Target] Rework the way the inferior environment is created
Summary:
The interactions between the environment settings (`target.env-vars`,
`target.inherit-env`) and the inferior life-cycle are non-obvious
today. For example, if `target.inherit-env` is set, the `target.env-vars`
setting will be augmented with the contents of the host environment
the first time the launch environment is queried (usually at
launch). After that point, toggling `target.inherit-env` will have no
effect as there's no tracking of what comes from the host and what is
a user setting.

This patch computes the environment every time it is queried rather
than updating the contents of the `target.env-vars` property. This
means that toggling the `target.inherit-env` property later will now
have the intended effect.

This patch also adds a `target.unset-env-vars` settings that one can
use to remove variables from the launch environment. Using this, you
can inherit all but a few of the host environment.

The way the launch environment is constructed is:
  1/ if `target.inherit-env` is set, then read the host environment
  into the launch environment.
  2/ Remove for the environment the variables listed in
  `target.unset-env`.
  3/ Augment the launch environment with the contents of
  `target.env-vars`. This overrides any common values with the host
  environment.

The one functional difference here that could be seen as a regression
is that `target.env-vars` will not contain the inferior environment
after launch. The patch implements a better alternative in the
`target show-launch-environment` command which will return the
environment computed through the above rules.

Fred Riss 9228a9efc6 [lldb/Target] Initialize new targets environment variables from target.env-vars
Summary:
The TargetProperties constructor invokes a series of callbacks to
prime the properties from the default ones. The one callback in
charge of updating the inferior environment was commented out
because it crashed.

The reason for the crash is that TargetProperties is a parent class
of Target and the callbacks were invoked using a Target that was
not fully initialized. This patch moves the initial callback
invocations to a separate function that can be called at the end
the Target constructor, thus preventing the crash.

One existing test had to be modified, because the initialization of
the environment properties now take place at the time the target is
created, not at the first use of the environment (usually launch
time).

The added test checks that the LaunchInfo object returned by
the target has been primed with the values from the settings.

Jaroslav Sevcik 089cfe113d Improve step over performance
Summary:
This patch improves step over performance for the case when we are
stepping over a call with a next-branch-breakpoint (see
https://reviews.llvm.org/D58678), and we encounter a stop during the
call. Currently, this causes the thread plan to step-out //each frame//
until it reaches the step-over range. This is a regression introduced by
https://reviews.llvm.org/D58678 (which did improve other things!). Prior
to that change, the step-over plan would always step-out just once.

With this patch, if we find ourselves stopped in a deeper stack frame
and we already have a next branch breakpoint, we simply return from the
step-over plan's ShouldStop handler without pushing the step out plan.

In my experiments this improved the time of stepping over a call that
loads 12 dlls from 14s to 5s. This was in remote debugging scenario with
10ms RTT, the call in question was Vulkan initialization
(vkCreateInstance), which loads various driver dlls. Loading those dlls
must stop on the rendezvous breakpoint, causing the perf problem
described above.

This change is motivated by a test failure for the Assert frame

Instead of only checking the default symbol name and the alternate one,

Tatyana Krasnukha 0a840ef800 [lldb] Copy m_behaves_like_zeroth_frame on stack frame update
Fix to code from https://reviews.llvm.org/D64993.

Field StackFrame::m_behaves_like_zeroth_frame was introduced in commit
[1], however that commit hasn't added a copying of the field to
UpdatePreviousFrameFromCurrentFrame, therefore the value wouldn't change
when updating frames to reflect the current situation.

The particular scenario, where this matters is following. Assume we have
function main that invokes function func1. We set breakpoint at
func1 entry and in main after the func1 call, and do not stop at
the main entry. Therefore, when debugger stops for the first time,
func1 is frame#0, while main is frame#1, thus
m_behaves_like_zeroth_frame is set to 0 for main frame. Execution is
resumed, and stops now in main, where it is now frame#0. However while
updating the frame object, m_behaves_like_zeroth_frame remains false.
This field plays an important role when calculating line information for
backtrace: for frame#0, PC is the current line, therefore line
information is retrieved for PC, however for all other frames this is
not the case - calculated PC is a return-PC, i.e. instruction after the
function call line, therefore for those frames LLDB needs to step back
by one instruction. Initial implementation did this strictly for frames
that have index != 0 (and index is updated properly in
UpdatePreviousFrameFromCurrentFrame), but m_behaves_like_zeroth_frame
added a capability for middle-of-stack frames to behave in a similar
manner. But because current code now doesn't check frame idx,
m_behaves_like_zeroth_frame must be set to true for frames with 0 index,
not only for frame that behave like one. In the described test case,
after stopping in main, LLDB would still consider frame#0 as
non-zeroth, and would subtract instruction from the PC, and would report
previous like as current line.

The error doesn't manifest itself in LLDB interpreter though - it can be
reproduced through LLDB-MI and when using SB API, but not when we
interpreter command "continue" is executed. Honestly, I didn't fully
understand why it works in interpreter, I did found that bug "fixes"
itself if I enable DEBUG_STACK_FRAMES in StackFrameList.cpp, because
that calls StackFrame::Dump and that calls
GetSymbolContext(eSymbolContextEverything), which fills the context of
frame on the first breakpoint, therefore it doesn't have to be
recalculated (improperly) on a second frame. However, on first
breakpoint symbol context is calculated for the "call" line, not the
next one, therefore it should be recalculated anyway on a second
breakpoint, and it is done correctly, even though
m_behaves_like_zeroth_frame is still incorrect, as long as
GetSymbolContext(eSymbolContextEverything) has been called.

Summary:
This is the only real unwinder, and things have been this way for quite

it is unlikely that anyone will want to reimplement the whole thing.

The class is also fairly closely coupled (through UnwindPlans and

imagine a different unwinder implementation being substantially
different without reimplementing all of those.

The existing unwinding functionality is nonetheless fairly complex and
there is space for adding more structure to it, but I believe a more
worthwhile effort would be to take the existing UnwindLLDB class and try
to break it down and introduce extension/customization points, instead
of writing a brand new Unwind implementation.

Summary:
These definitions are used to "augment" information received from the remote
target with eh/debug frame and "generic" register numbers.

Besides being verbose, this information was also incomplete (new registers like
xmm16-31 were missing) and sometimes even downright wrong (ymm register
numbers).

Most of this information is available via llvm's MCRegisterInfo. This patch
creates a new class, MCBasedABI, which retrieves the eh and debug frame register
numbers this way. The tricky part here is that the llvm class uses all-caps
register names, whereas lldb register are lowercase, and sometimes called
slightly differently. Therefore this class introduces some hooks to allow a
subclass to customize the MC lookup. The subclass also needs to suply the
"generic" register numbers, as this is an lldb invention.

This patch ports the x86_64 ABI classes to use the new register info mechanism.
It also creates a new "ABIx86_64" class which can be used to house code common
to x86_64 both ABIs. Right now, this just consists of a single function, but
there are plenty of other things that could be moved here too.

         18044: 0000000000030520    70 FUNC    LOCAL  DEFAULT   14 __GI___assert_fail
         20081: 00000000000303a0   370 FUNC    LOCAL  DEFAULT   14 __assert_fail_base
         21766: 0000000000030520    70 FUNC    GLOBAL DEFAULT   14 __assert_fail

The patch should never expect __GI___assert_fail:

.symtab can be present or not but that should not change that
__assert_fail always wins - it is always present from .dynsym and it can
never be overriden by __GI___assert_fail as __GI___assert_fail has only
local binding. Global binding is preferred since D63540.

External debug info symbols do not matter since D55859 (and DWARF should
never be embedded in system libc.so.6).

Med Ismail Bennani 047c4b0369 [lldb/Target] Fix `frame recognizer list` crash when registered with nullptr
One way to register a recognizer is to use RegularExpressionSP for the
module and symbol.

In order to match a symbol regardless of the module, the recognizer can
be registered with a nullptr for the module. However, this cause the
frame recognizer list command to crash because it calls
RegularExpression::GetText without checking if the shared pointer is valid.

This patch adds checks for the symbol and module RegularExpressionSP.

In order to synthesize tail call frames, the stack frame list must not

This case is hard to hit. To trigger it, we must first fail to push

given its SymbolContext the GetParentOfInlineScope call fails. This
causes m_concrete_frames_fetched to be incremented while m_frames
remains empty. Then, the next frame in the stack may fail within
SynthesizeTailCallFrames. This crash arose during a kernel debugging

Summary:
A *.cpp file header in LLDB (and in LLDB) should like this:
```
//===-- TestUtilities.cpp -------------------------------------------------===//
However in LLDB most of our source files have arbitrary changes to this format and
these changes are spreading through LLDB as folks usually just use the existing
source files as templates for their new files (most notably the unnecessary
editor language indicator `-*- C++ -*-` is spreading and in every review
someone is pointing out that this is wrong, resulting in people pointing out that this
is done in the same way in other files).
This patch removes most of these inconsistencies including the editor language indicators,
all the different missing/additional '-' characters, files that center the file name, missing
trailing `===//` (mostly caused by clang-format breaking the line).
Raphael Isemann ff0102b32c [lldb] Remove modern-type-lookup
Summary:
As discussed on the mailing list [1] we have to make a decision for how to proceed with the modern-type-lookup.
This patch removes modern-type-lookup from LLDB. This just removes all the code behind the modern-type-lookup
setting but it does *not* remove any code from Clang (i.e., the ExternalASTMerger and the clang-import-test stay around
for now).
The motivation for this is that I don't think that the current approach of implementing modern-type-lookup
will work out. Especially creating a completely new lookup system behind some setting that is never turned on by anyone
and then one day make one big switch to the new system seems wrong. It doesn't fit into the way LLVM is developed and has
so far made the transition work much more complicated than it has to be.
A lot of the benefits that were supposed to come with the modern-type-lookup are related to having a better organization
in the way types move across LLDB and having less dependencies on unrelated LLDB code. By just looking at the current code (mostly
the ClangASTImporter) I think we can reach the same goals by just incrementally cleaning up, documenting, refactoring
and actually testing the existing code we have.
Pavel Labath 532290e69f [lldb] s/FileSpec::Equal/FileSpec::Match
Summary:
The FileSpec class is often used as a sort of a pattern -- one specifies
a bare file name to search, and we check if in matches the full file
name of an existing module (for example).
These comparisons used FileSpec::Equal, which had some support for it
(via the full=false argument), but it was not a good fit for this job.
For one, it did a symmetric comparison, which makes sense for a function
called "equal", but not for typical searches (when searching for
"/foo/bar.so", we don't want to find a module whose name is just
"bar.so"). This resulted in patterns like:
    if (FileSpec::Equal(pattern, file, pattern.GetDirectory()))
which would request a "full" match only if the pattern really contained
a directory. This worked, but the intended behavior was very unobvious.
On top of that, a lot of the code wanted to handle the case of an
"empty" pattern, and treat it as matching everything. This resulted in
conditions like:
    if (pattern && !FileSpec::Equal(pattern, file, pattern.GetDirectory())
which are nearly impossible to decipher.
This patch introduces a FileSpec::Match function, which does exactly
what most of FileSpec::Equal callers want, an asymmetric match between a
"pattern" FileSpec and a an actual FileSpec. Empty paterns match
everything, filename-only patterns match only the filename component.
I've tried to update all callers of FileSpec::Equal to use a simpler
interface. Those that hardcoded full=true have been changed to use
operator==. Those passing full=pattern.GetDirectory() have been changed
to use FileSpec::Match.
There was also a handful of places which hardcoded full=false. I've
changed these to use FileSpec::Match too. This is a slight change in
semantics, but it does not look like that was ever intended, and it was
more likely a result of a misunderstanding of the "proper" way to use
FileSpec::Equal.
[In an ideal world a "FileSpec" and a "FileSpec pattern" would be two
different types, but given how widespread FileSpec is, it is unlikely
we'll get there in one go. This at least provides a good starting point
by centralizing all matching behavior.]
Previously the ABI plugin exposed some "register infos" and the
gdb-remote code used those to fill in the missing bits. Now, the
"filling in" code is in the ABI plugin itself, and the gdb-remote code
just invokes that.
The motivation for this is two-fold:
a) the "augmentation" logic is useful outside of process gdb-remote. For
  instance, it would allow us to avoid repeating the register number
  definitions in minidump code.
b) It gives more implementation freedom to the ABI classes. Now that
  these "register infos" are essentially implementation details, classes
  can use other methods to obtain dwarf/eh_frame register numbers -- for
  instance they can consult llvm MC layer.
Since the augmentation code was not currently tested anywhere, I took
the opportunity to create a simple test for it.
Pavel Labath 7c603a41e2 lldb/minidump: Refactor memory region computation code
The goal of this refactor is to enable ProcessMinidump to take into
account the loaded modules and their sections when computing the
permissions of various ranges of memory, as discussed in D66638.
This patch moves some of the responsibility for computing the ranges
from MinidumpParser into ProcessMinidump. MinidumpParser still does the
parsing, but ProcessMinidump becomes responsible for answering the
actual queries about memory ranges. This will enable it (in a follow-up
patch) to augment the information obtained from the parser with data
obtained from actual object files.
The changes in the actual code are fairly straight-forward and just
involve moving code around. MinidumpParser::GetMemoryRegions is renamed
to BuildMemoryRegions to emphasize that it does no caching. The only new
thing is the additional bool flag returned from this function. This
indicates whether the returned regions describe all memory mapped into
the target process. Data obtained from /proc/maps and the MemoryInfoList
stream is considered to be exhaustive. Data obtained from Memory(64)List
is not. This will be used to determine whether we need to augment the
data or not.
This reshuffle means that it is no longer possible/easy to test some of
this code via unit tests, as constructing a ProcessMinidump instance is
hard. Instead, I update the unit tests to only test the parsing of the
actual data, and test the answering of queries through a lit test using
the "memory region" command. The patch also includes some tweaks to the
MemoryRegion class to make the unit tests easier to write.
Lawrence D'Anna 7ca15ba73f remove File::SetStream(), make new files instead.
Summary:
This patch removes File::SetStream() and File::SetDescriptor(),
and replaces most direct uses of File with pointers to File.
Instead of calling SetStream() on a file, we make a new file and
replace it.
My ultimate goal here is to introduce a new API class SBFile, which
has full support for python io.IOStream file objects.   These can
redirect read() and write() to python code, so lldb::Files will
need a way to dispatch those methods.   Additionally it will need some
form of sharing and assigning files, as a SBFile will be passed in and
assigned to the main IO streams of the debugger.
In my prototype patch queue, I make File itself copyable and add a
secondary class FileOps to manage the sharing and dispatch.  In that
case SBFile was a unique_ptr<File>.
(here: https://github.com/smoofra/llvm-project/tree/files)
However in review, Pavel Labath suggested that it be shared_ptr instead.
(here: https://reviews.llvm.org/D67793)
In order for SBFile to use shared_ptr<File>, everything else should
as well.
If this patch is accepted, I will make SBFile use a shared_ptr
I will remove FileOps from future patches and use subclasses of File
instead.
Summary:
I was recently surprised to learn that there is a total of 2 (two) users
of the register info definitions contained in the ABI plugins. Yet, the
defitions themselves span nearly 10kLOC.
The two users are:
 - dwarf expression pretty printer
 - the mechanism for augmenting the register info definitions obtained
   over gdb-remote protocol (AugmentRegisterInfoViaABI)
Both of these uses need the DWARF an EH register numbers, which is
information that is already available in LLVM. This patch makes it
possible to do so.
It adds a GetMCRegisterInfo method to the ABI class, which every class
is expected to implement. Normally, it should be sufficient to obtain
the definitions from the appropriate llvm::Target object (for which I
provide a utility function), but the subclasses are free to construct it
in any way they deem fit.
We should be able to always get the MCRegisterInfo object from llvm,
with one important exception: if the relevant llvm target was disabled
at compile time. To handle this, I add a mechanism to disable the
compilation of ABI plugins based on the value of LLVM_TARGETS_TO_BUILD
cmake setting. This ensures all our existing are able to create their
MCRegisterInfo objects.
The new MCRegisterInfo api is not used yet, but the intention is to make
use of it in follow-up patches.
lvm_private::File::GetStream() can fail if m_options == 0
It's not clear from the header a File created with a descriptor will be
not be usable by many parts of LLDB unless SetOptions is also called,
but it is.
This is because those parts of LLDB rely on GetStream() to use the
file, and that in turn relies on calling fdopen on the descriptor. When
calling fdopen, GetStream relies on m_options to determine the access
mode. If m_options has never been set, GetStream() will fail.
This patch adds options as a required argument to File::SetDescriptor
and the corresponding constructor.
Raphael Isemann e5814d78ce [lldb] Limit the amount of zeroes we use for padding when printing small floats
Summary:
We got a radar that printing small floats is not very user-friendly in LLDB as we print them with up to
100 leading zeroes before starting to use scientific notation. This patch changes this by already using
scientific notation when we hit 6 padding zeroes by default and moves this value into a target setting
so that users can just set this number back to 100 if they for some reason preferred the old behaviour.
This new setting is influencing how we format data, so that's why we have to reset the data visualisation
cache when it is changed.
Note that we have always been using scientific notation for large numbers because it seems that
the LLVM implementation doesn't support printing out the padding zeroes for them. I would have fixed
that if it was trivial, but looking at the LLVM implementation for this it seems that this is not as trivial
as it sounds. I would say we look into this if we ever get a bug report about someone wanting to have
a large amount of trailing zeroes in their numbers instead of using scientific notation.
Property definitions are currently defined in a PropertyDefinition array
and have a corresponding enum to index in this array. Unfortunately this
is quite error prone. Indeed, just today we found an incorrect merge
where a discrepancy between the order of the enum values and their
definition caused the test suite to fail spectacularly.
Tablegen can streamline the process of generating the property
definition table while at the same time guaranteeing that the enums stay
in sync. That's exactly what this patch does. It adds a new tablegen
file for the properties, building on top of the infrastructure that
Raphael added recently for the command options. It also introduces two
new tablegen backends: one for the property definitions and one for
their corresponding enums.
It might be worth mentioning that I generated most of the tablegen
definitions from the existing property definitions, by adding a dump
method to the struct. This seems both more efficient and less error
prone that copying everything over by hand. Only Enum properties needed
manual fixup for the EnumValues and DefaultEnumValue fields.
macro. The macro is similar to LLDB_LOG but supports printf-style format
strings, instead of formatv-style format strings.
So instead of writing:
  if (log)
    log->Printf("%s\n", str);
You'd write:
  LLDB_LOG(log, "%s\n", str);
This change was done mechanically with the command below. I replaced the
spurious if-checks with vim, since I know how to do multi-line
replacements with it.
  find . -type f -name '*.cpp' -exec \
  sed -i '' -E 's/log->Printf\(/LLDB_LOGF\(log, /g' "{}" +
Jason Molenda 956761adb0 Fall back to dyld's _dyld_start when no LC_MAIN / main() func can be found
The new DriverKit user-land kernel drivers in macOS 10.15 / Catalina
do not have a main() function or an LC_MAIN load command.  lldb uses
the address of main() as the return address for inferior function
calls; it puts a breakpoint on main, runs the inferior function call,
and when the main() breakpoint is hit, lldb knows unambiguously that
the inferior function call ran to completion - no other function calls
main.
This change hoists the logic for finding the "entry address" from
ThreadPlanCallFunction to Target.  It changes the logic to first
try to get the entry address from the main executable module,
but if that module does not have one, it will iterate through all
modules looking for an entry address.
The patch also adds code to ObjectFileMachO to use dyld's
_dyld_start function as an entry address.
Summary:
If target.preload-symbols is false, waiting for the process to "stop"
can take an arbitrarily long amount of time, because it will cause all
the debug info to be parsed (to compute the stop message showing the
function, its arguments, etc).
We were previously waiting for 10 seconds for the stop even to arrive,
which is a pretty long time, but it's not that hard to overcome with
huge debug info.
Since any arbitrary limit can be theoretically overcome with huge
debug_info and/or slow machine, and the stop even was sent 3 lines above
the wait, if we ever do not receive the stop even means we've got a bug
in lldb. Therefore, I remove the timeout on this wait completely.
Greg Clayton df225764b7 Improve step over performance by not stopping at branches that are function calls and stepping into and them out of each one
Currently when we single step over a source line, we run and stop at every branch in the source line range. We can reduce the number of times we stop when stepping over by figuring out if any of these branches are function calls, and if so, ignore these branches. Since we are stepping over we can safely ignore these calls since they will return to the next instruction. Currently the step logic would stop at those branches (1st stop), single step into the branch (2nd stop), and then set a breakpoint at the return address (3rd stop), and then continue.
Greg Clayton 8a7779209d Include inlined functions when figuring out a contiguous address range
Checking this in for Antonio Afonso:
This diff changes the function LineEntry::GetSameLineContiguousAddressRange so that it also includes function calls that were inlined at the same line of code.
My motivation is to decrease the step over time of lines that heavly rely on inlined functions. I have multiple examples in the code base I work that makes a step over stop 20 or mote times internally. This can easly had up to step overs that take >500ms which I was able to lower to 25ms with this new strategy.
The reason the current code is not extending the address range beyond an inlined function is because when we resolve the symbol at the next address of the line entry we will get the entry line corresponding to where the original code for the inline function lives, making us barely extend the range. This then will end up on a step over having to stop multiple times everytime there's an inlined function.
To check if the range is an inlined function at that line I also get the block associated with the next address and check if there is a parent block with a call site at the line we're trying to extend.
To check this I created a new function in Block called GetContainingInlinedBlockWithCallSite that does exactly that. I also added a new function to Declaration for convinence of checking file/line named CompareFileAndLine.
To avoid potential issues when extending an address range I added an Extend function that extends the range by the AddressRange given as an argument. This function returns true to indicate sucess when the rage was agumented, false otherwise (e.g.: the ranges are not connected). The reason I do is to make sure that we're not just blindly extending complete_line_range by whatever GetByteSize() we got. If for some reason the ranges are not connected or overlap, or even 0, this could be an issue.
I also added a unit tests for this change and include the instructions on the test itself on how to generate the yaml file I use for testing.
Raphael Isemann 1756630dfa C.128 override, virtual keyword handling
Summary:
According to [C128] "Virtual functions should specify exactly one
of `virtual`, `override`, or `final`", I've added override where a
virtual function is overriden but the explicit `override` keyword
was missing. Whenever both `virtual` and `override` were specified,
I removed `virtual`. As C.128 puts it:
> [...] writing more than one of these three is both redundant and
> a potential source of errors.
I anticipate a discussion about whether or not to add `override` to
destructors but I went for it because of an example in [ISOCPP1000].
Let me repeat the comment for you here:
Consider this code:
```
    struct Base {
      virtual ~Base(){}
    };

    struct SubClass : Base {
      ~SubClass() {
        std::cout << "It works!\n";
      }
    };

    int main() {
      std::unique_ptr<Base> ptr = std::make_unique<SubClass>();
    }
```
If for some odd reason somebody removes the `virtual` keyword from the
`Base` struct, the code will no longer print `It works!`. So adding
`override` to destructors actively protects us from accidentally
breaking our code at runtime.
Frederic Riss acbf0058e9 Lock accesses to OptionValueFileSpecList objects
Before a Debugger gets a Target, target settings are routed to a global set
of settings. Even without this, some part of the LLDB which exist independently
of the Debugger object (the Module cache, the Symbol vendors, ...) access
directly the global default store for those settings.
Of course, if you modify one of those global settings while they are being read,
bad things happen. We see this quite a bit with FileSpecList settings. In
particular, we see many cases where one debug session changes
target.exec-search-paths while another session starts up and it crashes when
one of those accesses invalid FileSpecs.
This patch addresses the specific FileSpecList issue by adding locking to
OptionValueFileSpecList and never returning by reference.
Jason Molenda a38b8c8abc Fix a bug in my change to ModulesDidLoad in r357955.
In the process of hoisting the LoadScriptingResourceForModule
out of Target::ModuleAdded and into Target::ModulesDidLoad,
I had ModulesDidLoad fetching the Target's entire image list
and look for scripting resources in those -- instead of only
looking for scripting resources in the modules that had
been added to the target's image list.
Jonas Devlieghere 8b3af63b89 [NFC] Remove ASCII lines from comments
A lot of comments in LLDB are surrounded by an ASCII line to delimit the
begging and end of the comment.
Its use is not really consistent across the code base, sometimes the
lines are longer, sometimes they are shorter and sometimes they are
omitted. Furthermore, it looks kind of weird with the 80 column limit,
where the comment actually extends past the line, but not by much.
Furthermore, when /// is used for Doxygen comments, it looks
particularly odd. And when // is used, it incorrectly gives the
impression that it's actually a Doxygen comment.
I assume these lines were added to improve distinguishing between
comments and code. However, given that todays editors and IDEs do a
great job at highlighting comments, I think it's worth to drop this for
the sake of consistency. The alternative is fixing all the
inconsistencies, which would create a lot more churn.
Jason Molenda 1724a179e7 Rename Target::GetSharedModule to Target::GetOrCreateModule.
Add a flag to control whether the ModulesDidLoad notification is
called when a module is added.  If the notifications are disabled,
the caller must call ModulesDidLoad after adding all the new modules,
but postponing this notification until they're all batched up can
allow for better efficiency than notifying one-by-one.
Change the name of the ModuleList notifier functions that a subclass
can implement to start with 'Notify' to make it clear what they are.
Add a NotifyModulesRemoved.
Add header documentation for the changed/updated methods.
Added defaulted-value 'notify' argument to ModuleList Append,
AppendIfNeeded, and Remove because callers working with a local
ModuleList don't have an obvious idea of what notify means in this
context.  When the ModuleList is a part of the Target class, the
notify behavior matters.
DynamicLoaderDarwin has been updated so that libraries being
added/removed are correctly batched up before notifications are
sent.  Added the TestModuleLoadedNotifys.py test to run on
Darwin to test this.
Adrian Prantl 4c03ea14f2 Unify random timeouts throughout LLDB and make them configurable.
Since these timeouts guard against catastrophic error in debugserver,
I also increased all of them to the maximum value among them.
The motivation for this test was the observation that an asanified
LLDB would often exhibit seemingly random test failures that could be
traced back to debugserver packets getting out of sync. With this path
applied I can no longer reproduce the one particular failure mode that
I was investigating.
Raphael Isemann 6c0bbfc0c9 Add ability to import std module into expression parser to improve C++ debugging
Summary:
This patch is the MVP version of importing the std module into the expression parser to improve C++ debugging.
What happens in this patch is that we inject a `@import std` into our expression source code. We also
modify our internal Clang instance for parsing this expression to work with modules and debug info
at the same time (which is the main change in terms of LOC). We implicitly build the `std` module on the first use. The
C++ include paths for building are extracted from the debug info, which means that this currently only
works if the program is compiled with `-glldb -fmodules` and uses the std module. The C include paths
are currently specified by LLDB.
I enabled the tests currently only for libc++ and Linux because I could test this locally. I'll enable the tests
for other platforms once this has landed and doesn't break any bots (and I implemented the platform-specific
C include paths for them).
With this patch we can now:
* Build a libc++ as a module and import it into the expression parser.
* Read from the module while also referencing declarations from the debug info. E.g. `std::abs(local_variable)`.
What doesn't work (yet):
* Merging debug info and C++ module declarations. E.g. `std::vector<CustomClass>` doesn't work.
* Pretty much anything that involves the ASTImporter and templated code. As the ASTImporter is used for saving the result declaration, this means that we can't
call yet any function that returns a non-trivial type.
* Use libstdc++ for this, as it requires multiple include paths and Clang only emits one include path per module. Also libstdc++ doesn't support Clang modules without patches.
Greg Clayton 0d6f681292 Fix a crasher in StackFrame::GetValueForVariableExpressionPath()
There was a crash that would happen if an IDE would ask for a child of a shared pointer via any SB API call that ends up calling StackFrame::GetValueForVariableExpressionPath(). The previous code expects an error to be set describing why the synthetic child of a type was not able to be found, but we have some synthetic child providers that weren't setting the error and returning an empty value object shared pointer. This fixes that to ensure we don't lose our debug session by crashing, fully tests GetValueForVariableExpressionPath functionality, and ensures we don't crash on GetValueForVariableExpressionPath() in the future.
Adrian Prantl 0e4c482124 Pass ConstString by value (NFC)
My apologies for the large patch. With the exception of ConstString.h
itself it was entirely produced by sed.
ConstString has exactly one const char * data member, so passing a
ConstString by reference is not any more efficient than copying it by
value. In both cases a single pointer is passed. But passing it by
value makes it harder to accidentally return the address of a local
object.
