Duncan P. N. Exon Smith 4fb46cb818 Linker: Move distinct MDNodes instead of cloning
Instead of cloning distinct `MDNode`s when linking in a module, just
move them over. The module linker destroys the source module, so the
old node would otherwise just be leaked on the context. Create the new
node in place. This also reduces the number of cloned uniqued nodes
(since it's less likely their operands have changed).

This mapping strategy is only correct when we're discarding the source,
so the linker turns it on via a ValueMapper flag, `RF_MoveDistinctMDs`.

There's nothing observable in terms of `llvm-link` output here: the
linked module should be semantically identical.

I'll be adding more 'distinct' nodes to the debug info metadata graph in
order to break uniquing cycles, so the benefits of this will partly come
in future commits. However, we should get some gains immediately, since
we have a fair number of 'distinct' `DILocation`s being linked in.

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith ed013cd221 DI: Remove DW_TAG_arg_variable and DW_TAG_auto_variable
Remove the fake `DW_TAG_auto_variable` and `DW_TAG_arg_variable` tags,
using `DW_TAG_variable` in their place Stop exposing the `tag:` field at
all in the assembly format for `DILocalVariable`.

Most of the testcase updates were generated by the following sed script:

    find test/ -name "*.ll" -o -name "*.mir" |
    xargs grep -l 'DILocalVariable' |
    xargs sed -i '' \
      -e 's/tag: DW_TAG_arg_variable, //' \
      -e 's/tag: DW_TAG_auto_variable, //'

There were only a handful of tests in `test/Assembly` that I needed to
update by hand.

(Note: a follow-up could change `DILocalVariable::DILocalVariable()` to
set the tag to `DW_TAG_formal_parameter` instead of `DW_TAG_variable`
(as appropriate), instead of having that logic magically in the backend
in `DbgVariable`. I've added a FIXME to that effect.)

Pete Cooper f3159f3c12 Reapply "Add reverse(ContainerTy) range adapter."
This reverts commit r243567, which ultimately reapplies r243563.

The fix here was to use std::enable_if for overload resolution. Thanks to David
Blaikie for lots of help on this, and for the extra tests!

Original commit message follows:

For cases where we needed a foreach loop in reverse over a container,
we had to do something like

 for (const GlobalValue *GV : make_range(TypeInfos.rbegin(),
                                         TypeInfos.rend())) {

This provides a convenience method which shortens this to

 for (const GlobalValue *GV : reverse(TypeInfos)) {

There are 2 versions of this, with a preference to the rbegin() version.

The first uses rbegin() and rend() to construct an iterator_range.

The second constructs an iterator_range from the begin() and end() methods
wrapped in std::reverse_iterator's.

Chandler Carruth 194f59ca5d [PM/AA] Extract the ModRef enums from the AliasAnalysis class in
preparation for de-coupling the AA implementations.

In order to do this, they had to become fake-scoped using the
traditional LLVM pattern of a leading initialism. These can't be actual
scoped enumerations because they're bitfields and thus inherently we use
them as integers.

I've also renamed the behavior enums that are specific to reasoning
about the mod/ref behavior of functions when called. This makes it more
clear that they have a very narrow domain of applicability.

I think there is a significantly cleaner API for all of this, but
I don't want to try to do really substantive changes for now, I just
want to refactor the things away from analysis groups so I'm preserving
the exact original design and just cleaning up the names, style, and
lifting out of the class.

Alexey Samsonov e5039b7b2a [DebugInfo] Let IRBuilder::SetInsertPoint(BB::iterator) update current debug location.
IRBuilder::SetInsertPoint(BB, BB::iterator) is an older version of
IRBuilder::SetInsertPoint(Instruction). However, the latter updates
the current debug location of emitted instruction, while the former
doesn't, which is confusing.

Unify the behavior of these methods: now they both set current debug
location to the debug location of instruction at insertion point.

The callers of IRBuilder::SetInsertPoint(BB, BB::iterator) doesn't
seem to depend on the old behavior (keeping the original debug info
location). On the contrary, sometimes they (e.g. SCEV) *should* be
updating debug info location, but don't. I'll look at gdb bots after
the commit to check that we don't regress on debug info somewhere.

This change may make line table more fine-grained, thus increasing
debug info size. I haven't observed significant increase, though:
it varies from negligible to 0.3% on several binaries and self-hosted
Clang.

This is yet another change targeted at resolving PR23837.

This includes the configuration macros (e.g., -DNDEBUG), the include path

The idea is that the backend will turn this into a DW_TAG_module.

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith 1f8a99a9ae IR: Expose ModuleSlotTracker in Value::print()
Allow callers of `Value::print()` and `Metadata::print()` to pass in a
`ModuleSlotTracker`. This allows them to pay only once for calculating
module-level slots (such as Metadata).

This is related to PR23865, where there was a huge cost for
`MachineFunction::print()`.  Although I don't have a *particular* user
in mind for this new code, I have hit big slowdowns before when running
`opt -debug`, and I think this will be useful. Going forward, if
someone hits a big slowdown with `print()` statements, they can create a
`ModuleSlotTracker` and send it through. Similarly, adding support to
`Value::dump()` and `Metadata::dump()` should be trivial.

I added unit tests to be sure the `print()` functions actually behave
the same way with and without the slot tracker.

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith 827200c822 AsmPrinter: Use an intrusively linked list for DIE::Children
Replace the `std::vector<>` for `DIE::Children` with an intrusively
linked list. This is a strict memory improvement: it requires no
auxiliary storage, and reduces `sizeof(DIE)` by one pointer. It also
factors out the DIE-related malloc traffic.

This drops llc memory usage from 735 MB down to 718 MB, or ~2.3%.

(I'm looking at `llc` memory usage on `verify-uselistorder.lto.opt.bc`;
see r236629 for details.)

Change `DIE::Values` to a singly linked list, where each node is
allocated on a `BumpPtrAllocator`. In order to support `push_back()`,
the list is circular, and points at the tail element instead of the

that it can be reused for `DIE::Children`, which also cares about
`push_back()`.

This drops llc memory usage from 799 MB down to 735 MB, about 8%.

(I'm looking at `llc` memory usage on `verify-uselistorder.lto.opt.bc`;
see r236629 for details.)

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith e7e1d0c706 Reapply "AsmPrinter: Change DIEValue to be stored by value"
This reverts commit r238350, effectively reapplying r238349 after fixing
(all?) the problems, all somehow related to how I was using
`AlignedArrayCharUnion<>` inside `DIEValue`:

  - MSVC can only handle `sizeof()` on types, not values. Change the
    assert.
  - GCC doesn't know the `is_trivially_copyable` type trait. Instead of
    asserting it, add destructors.
  - Call placement new even when constructing POD (i.e., the pointers).
  - Instead of copying the char buffer, copy the casted classes.

I've left in a couple of `static_assert`s that I think both MSVC and GCC
know how to handle. If the bots disagree with me, I'll remove them.

  - Check that the constructed type is either standard layout or a
    pointer. This protects against a programming error: we really want
    the "small" `DIEValue`s to be small and simple, so don't
    accidentally change them not to be.
  - Similarly, check that the size of the buffer is no bigger than a
    `uint64_t` or a pointer. (I thought checking against
    `sizeof(uint64_t)` would be good enough, but Chandler suggested that
    pointers might sometimes be bigger than that in the context of
    sanitizers.)

I've also committed r238359 in the meantime, which introduces a
DIEValue.def to simplify dispatching between the various types (thanks
to a review comment by David Blaikie). Without that, this commit would
be almost unintelligible.

Here's the original commit message:
--
Change `DIEValue` to be stored/passed/etc. by value, instead of
reference. It's now a discriminated union, with a `Val` field storing
the actual type. The classes that used to inherit from `DIEValue` no
longer do. There are two categories of these:

  - Small values fit in a single pointer and are stored by value.
  - Large values require auxiliary storage, and are stored by reference.

The only non-mechanical change is to tools/dsymutil/DwarfLinker.cpp. It
was relying on `DIEInteger`s being passed around by reference, so I
replaced that assumption with a `PatchLocation` type that stores a safe
reference to where the `DIEInteger` lives instead.

This commit causes a temporary regression in memory usage, since I've
left merging `DIEAbbrevData` into `DIEValue` for a follow-up commit.  I
measured an increase from 845 MB to 879 MB, around 3.9%. The follow-up
drops it lower than the starting point, and I've only recently brought
the memory this low anyway, so I'm committing these changes separately
to keep them incremental. (I also considered swapping the commits, but
the other one first would cause a lot more code churn.)

(I'm looking at `llc` memory usage on `verify-uselistorder.lto.opt.bc`;
see r236629 for details.)

Expose the `DwarfStringPool` entry in a header, and store a pointer to

emit it, use the `dwarf::Form` to determine that at emission time.
Besides avoiding the other `DIEValue`, this shaves two pointers off of
`DIEString`; the data is now a single pointer. This is a nice cleanup

0.9% -- but it's also preparation for passing `DIEValue`s by value.

Adrian Prantl 1f599f9f65 IR / debug info: Add a DWOId field to DICompileUnit,
so DWARF skeleton CUs can be expression in IR. A skeleton CU is a
(typically empty) DW_TAG_compile_unit that has a DW_AT_(GNU)_dwo_name and
a DW_AT_(GNU)_dwo_id attribute. It is used to refer to external debug info.

This is a prerequisite for clang module debugging as discussed in
http://lists.cs.uiuc.edu/pipermail/cfe-dev/2014-November/040076.html.
In order to refer to external types stored in split DWARF (dwo) objects,
such as clang modules, we need to emit skeleton CUs, which identify the
dwarf object (i.e., the clang module) by filename (the SplitDebugFilename)
and a hash value, the dwo_id.

This patch only contains the IR changes. The idea is that a CUs with a
non-zero dwo_id field will be emitted together with a DW_AT_GNU_dwo_name
and DW_AT_GNU_dwo_id attribute.

First ARMTargetParser FIXME, conservatively changing the way we parse CPUs
in the back-end. Still not perfect, with a lot of special cases, but moving
towards a more generic solution.

Moving all logic to the target parser made some unwritten assumptions
about architectures in Clang to break. I've added a lot of architectures
required by Clang, and default to CPUs that Clang believes it should
(and I agree).

I've also added a lot of unit tests, with the correct CPU for each
architecture, and Clang seems to be working correctly, too.

It also became clear that using "unsigned ID" as the argument for the get
methods makes it hard to know what ID, so I also changed the argument names

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith a9308c49ef IR: Give 'DI' prefix to debug info metadata
Finish off PR23080 by renaming the debug info IR constructs from `MD*`
to `DI*`. The last of the `DIDescriptor` classes were deleted in
r235356, and the last of the related typedefs removed in r235413, so
this has all baked for about a week.

Note: If you have out-of-tree code (like a frontend), I recommend that
you get everything compiling and tests passing with the *previous*
commit before updating to this one. It'll be easier to keep track of
what code is using the `DIDescriptor` hierarchy and what you've already
updated, and I think you're extremely unlikely to insert bugs. YMMV of
course.

Back to *this* commit: I did this using the rename-md-di-nodes.sh
upgrade script I've attached to PR23080 (both code and testcases) and
filtered through clang-format-diff.py. I edited the tests for
test/Assembler/invalid-generic-debug-node-*.ll by hand since the columns
were off-by-three. It should work on your out-of-tree testcases (and
code, if you've followed the advice in the previous paragraph).

Some of the tests are in badly named files now (e.g.,
test/Assembler/invalid-mdcompositetype-missing-tag.ll should be
'dicompositetype'); I'll come back and move the files in a follow-up
commit.

Rafael Espindola 4ba9af1141 Don't allow pwrite to resize a stream.
The current implementations could exhibit some behavior differences:

raw_fd_ostream: Whatever the underlying fd does with seek+write. In a normal
file, the write position would be back to the old offset.

raw_svector_ostream: The write position is always the end of the stream, so
after pwrite the write position would be the new end. This matches what OS_X
(all BSD?) do with a pwrite in a O_APPEND fd.

Given that we don't need that feature and don't use O_APPEND a lot in LLVM,
just disallow it.

I am open to suggestions on renaming pwrite to something else, but this fixes

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith 62e0f454a0 DebugInfo: Remove 'inlinedAt:' field from MDLocalVariable
Remove 'inlinedAt:' from MDLocalVariable. Besides saving some memory
(variables with it seem to be single largest `Metadata` contributer to
memory usage right now in -g -flto builds), this stops optimization and
backend passes from having to change local variables.

The 'inlinedAt:' field was used by the backend in two ways:

 1. To tell the backend whether and into what a variable was inlined.
 2. To create a unique id for each inlined variable.

Instead, rely on the 'inlinedAt:' field of the intrinsic's `!dbg`
attachment, and change the DWARF backend to use a typedef called
`InlinedVariable` which is `std::pair<MDLocalVariable*, MDLocation*>`.
This `DebugLoc` is already passed reliably through the backend (as
verified by r234021).

This commit removes the check from r234021, but I added a new check
(that will survive) in r235048, and changed the `DIBuilder` API in
r235041 to require a `!dbg` attachment whose 'scope:` is in the same
`MDSubprogram` as the variable's.

If this breaks your out-of-tree testcases, perhaps the script I used
(mdlocalvariable-drop-inlinedat.sh) will help; I'll attach it to PR22778
in a moment.

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith cd1aecfe36 DebugInfo: Require a DebugLoc in DIBuilder::insertDeclare()
Change `DIBuilder::insertDeclare()` and `insertDbgValueIntrinsic()` to
take an `MDLocation*`/`DebugLoc` parameter which it attaches to the
created intrinsic. Assert at creation time that the `scope:` field's
subprogram matches the variable's. There's a matching `clang` commit to
use the API.

The context for this is PR22778, which is removing the `inlinedAt:`
field from `MDLocalVariable`, instead deferring to the `!dbg` location
attached to the debug info intrinsic. The best way to ensure we always
have a `!dbg` attachment is to require one at creation time. I'll be
adding verifier checks next, but this API change is the best way to
shake out frontend bugs.

Note: I added an `llvm_unreachable()` in `bindings/go` and passed in
`nullptr` for the `DebugLoc`. The `llgo` folks will eventually need to
pass a valid `DebugLoc` here.

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith 9d1cf4c166 IR: Stop using DIDescriptor::is*() and auto-casting
`DIDescriptor`'s subclasses allow construction from incompatible
pointers, and `DIDescriptor` defines a series of `isa<>`-like functions
(e.g., `isCompileUnit()` instead of `isa<MDCompileUnit>()`) that clients
tend to use like this:

    if (DICompileUnit(N).isCompileUnit())
      foo(DICompileUnit(N));

These construction patterns work together to make `DIDescriptor` behave
differently from normal pointers.

Instead, use built-in `isa<>`, `dyn_cast<>`, etc., and only build
`DIDescriptor`s from pointers that are valid for their type.

I've split this into a few commits for different parts of LLVM and clang
(to decrease the patch size and increase the chance of review).
Generally the changes I made were NFC, but in a few places I made things
stricter if it made sense from the surrounded code.

Eventually a follow-up commit will remove the API for the "old" way.

This patch fixes MCJIT::addGlobalMapping by changing the implementation of the

mapping between symbol names (std::strings) and addresses (uint64_ts), rather
than a mapping between Value*s and void*s.

This has fix has been made for backwards compatibility, however the strongly
preferred way to resolve unknown symbols is by writing a custom
RuntimeDyld::SymbolResolver (formerly RTDyldMemoryManager) and overriding the
findSymbol method. The addGlobalMapping method is a hangover from the legacy JIT

RuntimeDyld::MemoryManager and RuntimeDyld::SymbolResolver.

The symbol resolution interface is modified slightly, from:

  uint64_t getSymbolAddress(const std::string &Name);

to:

  RuntimeDyld::SymbolInfo findSymbol(const std::string &Name);

The latter passes symbol flags along with symbol addresses, allowing RuntimeDyld
and others to reason about non-strong/non-exported symbols.

The memory management interface removes the following method:

  void notifyObjectLoaded(ExecutionEngine *EE,
                          const object::ObjectFile &) {}

as it is not related to memory management. (Note: Backwards compatibility *is*
maintained for this method in MCJIT and OrcMCJITReplacement, see below).

The RTDyldMemoryManager class remains in-tree for backwards compatibility.
It inherits directly from RuntimeDyld::SymbolResolver, and indirectly from
RuntimeDyld::MemoryManager via the new MCJITMemoryManager class, which
just subclasses RuntimeDyld::MemoryManager and reintroduces the
notifyObjectLoaded method for backwards compatibility).

The EngineBuilder class retains the existing method:

  EngineBuilder&
  setMCJITMemoryManager(std::unique_ptr<RTDyldMemoryManager> mcjmm);

and includes two new methods:

  EngineBuilder&
  setMemoryManager(std::unique_ptr<MCJITMemoryManager> MM);

  EngineBuilder&
  setSymbolResolver(std::unique_ptr<RuntimeDyld::SymbolResolver> SR);

Clients should use EITHER:

A single call to setMCJITMemoryManager with an RTDyldMemoryManager.

OR (exclusive)

One call each to each of setMemoryManager and setSymbolResolver.

This patch should be fully compatible with existing uses of RTDyldMemoryManager.
If it is not it should be considered a bug, and the patch either fixed or
reverted.

If clients find the new API to be an improvement the goal will be to deprecate
and eventually remove the RTDyldMemoryManager class in favor of the new classes.

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith 53855f05d3 Verifier: Check operands of MDType subclasses and MDCompileUnit
Add verify checks for `MDType` subclasses and for `MDCompileUnit`.
These new checks don't yet incorporate everything from `Verify()`, but
at least they sanity check the operands. Also downcast accessors as
possible.

A lot of these accessors can't be downcast as far as we'd like because
of arrays of typed objects (stored in a generic `MDTuple`) and
`MDString`-based type references. Eventually I'll port over `DIRef<>`
and `DITypedArray<>` from `DebugInfo.h` to clean those up as well.

Updated bitrotted testcases separately in r233415 and r233443 to reduce
churn on the off-chance this needs to be reverted.

Check fields from `MDLocalVariable` and `MDGlobalVariable` and change
the accessors to downcast to the right types. `getType()` still returns
`Metadata*` since it could be an `MDString`-based reference.

Since local variables require non-null scopes, I also updated `LLParser`
to require a `scope:` field.

A number of testcases had grown bitrot and started failing with this
patch; I committed them separately in r233349. If I just broke your
out-of-tree testcases, you're probably hitting similar problems (so have
a look there).

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith 264899823f Verifier: Check accessors of MDLocation
Check accessors of `MDLocation`, and change them to `cast<>` down to the
right types. Also add type-safe factory functions.

All the callers that handle broken code need to use the new versions of
the accessors (`getRawScope()` instead of `getScope()`) that still
return `Metadata*`. This is also necessary for things like
`MDNodeKeyImpl<MDLocation>` (in LLVMContextImpl.h) that need to unique
the nodes when their operands might still be forward references of the
wrong type.

In the `Value` hierarchy, consumers that handle broken code use
`getOperand()` directly. However, debug info nodes have a ton of
operands, and their order (even their existence) isn't stable yet. It's
safer and more maintainable to add an explicit "raw" accessor on the
class itself.

David Blaikie 156d46eda0 Opaque Pointer Types: GEP API migrations to specify the gep type explicitly
The changes to InstCombine (& SCEV) do seem a bit silly - it doesn't make
anything obviously better to have the caller access the pointers element
type (the thing I'm trying to remove) than the GEP itself, but it's a
helpful migration step. This will allow me to more obviously lock down
GEP (& Load, etc) API usage, then fix all the code that accesses pointer
element types except the places that need to be removed (most of the
InstCombines) anyway - at which point I'll need to just remove all that
code because it won't be meaningful anymore (there will be no pointer
types, so no bitcasts to combine)

SCEV looks like it'll need some restructuring - we'll have to do a bit
more work for GEP canonicalization, since it'll depend on how it's used
if we can even manage to canonicalize it to a non-ugly GEP. I guess we
can do some fun stuff like voting (do 2 out of 3 load from the GEP with
a certain type that gives a pretty GEP? Does every typed use of the GEP
use either a specific type or a generic type (i8*, etc)?)

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith d6d70e753d IR: Make Metadata::print() reliable and useful
Replumb the `AsmWriter` so that `Metadata::print()` is generally useful.
(Similarly change `Metadata::printAsOperand()`.)

- `SlotTracker` now has a mode where all metadata will be correctly
  numbered when initializing a `Module`. Normally, `Metadata` only
  referenced from within `Function`s gets numbered when the `Function`
  is incorporated.
- `Metadata::print()` and `Metadata::printAsOperand()` (and
  `Metadata::dump()`) now take an optional `Module` argument. When
  provided, `SlotTracker` is initialized with the new mode, and the
  numbering will be complete and consistent for all calls to `print()`.
- `Value::print()` uses the new `SlotTracker` mode when printing
  intrinsics with `MDNode` operands, `MetadataAsValue` operands, or the
  bodies of functions. Thus, metadata numbering will be consistent
  between calls to `Metadata::print()` and `Value::print()`.
- `Metadata::print()` (and `Metadata::dump()`) now print the full
  definition of `MDNode`s:

    !5 = !{!6, !"abc", !7}

  This matches behaviour for `Value::print()`, which includes the name
  of instructions.
- Updated call sites in `Verifier` to call `print()` instead of
  `printAsOperand()`.

All this, so that `Verifier` can print out useful failure messages that
involve `Metadata` for PR22777.

Note that `Metadata::printAsOperand()` previously took an optional
`bool` and `Module` operand. The former was cargo-culted from
`Value::printAsOperand()` and wasn't doing anything useful. The latter
didn't give consistent results (without the new `SlotTracker` mode).

Mehdi Amini a28d91d81b DataLayout is mandatory, update the API to reflect it with references.
Summary:
Now that the DataLayout is a mandatory part of the module, let's start
cleaning the codebase. This patch is a first attempt at doing that.

This patch is not exactly NFC as for instance some places were passing
a nullptr instead of the DataLayout, possibly just because there was a
default value on the DataLayout argument to many functions in the API.
Even though it is not purely NFC, there is no change in the
validation.

I turned as many pointer to DataLayout to references, this helped
figuring out all the places where a nullptr could come up.

I had initially a local version of this patch broken into over 30
independant, commits but some later commit were cleaning the API and
touching part of the code modified in the previous commits, so it
seemed cleaner without the intermediate state.

Without this, use of this copy ctor is deprecated in C++11 due to the

Marking the class final is just a little extra security that there are
no further derived classes that may then end up using the intermediate

I didn't bother marking the other (non-test) base class final, since it
has reference members so it won't have any implicit assignment operators
anyway. Open to ideas on that, though.

We probably want a warning about use of a slicing assignment operator,

Peter Collingbourne da2dbf21a9 LowerBitSets: Use byte arrays instead of bit sets to represent in-memory bit sets.
By loading from indexed offsets into a byte array and applying a mask, a
program can test bits from the bit set with a relatively short instruction
sequence. For example, suppose we have 15 bit sets to lay out:

A (16 bits), B (15 bits), C (14 bits), D (13 bits), E (12 bits),
F (11 bits), G (10 bits), H (9 bits), I (7 bits), J (6 bits), K (5 bits),
L (4 bits), M (3 bits), N (2 bits), O (1 bit)

These bits can be laid out in a 16-byte array like this:

      Byte Offset
    0123456789ABCDEF
Bit
  7 HHHHHHHHHIIIIIII
  6 GGGGGGGGGGJJJJJJ
  5 FFFFFFFFFFFKKKKK
  4 EEEEEEEEEEEELLLL
  3 DDDDDDDDDDDDDMMM
  2 CCCCCCCCCCCCCCNN
  1 BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBO
  0 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

For example, to test bit X of A, we evaluate ((bits[X] & 1) != 0), or to
test bit X of I, we evaluate ((bits[9 + X] & 0x80) != 0). This can be done
in 1-2 machine instructions on x86, or 4-6 instructions on ARM.

This uses the LPT multiprocessor scheduling algorithm to lay out the bits
efficiently.

Saves ~450KB of instructions in a recent build of Chromium.
