The ELF spec is very clear:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
If the value is non-zero, it represents a string table index that gives the
symbol name. Otherwise, the symbol table entry has no name.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
In particular, a st_name of 0 most certainly doesn't mean that the symbol has
the same name as the section.
llvm-svn: 238899
ELF has no restrictions on where undefined symbols go relative to other defined
symbols. In fact, gas just sorts them together. Do the same.
This was there since r111174 probably just because the MachO writer has it.
llvm-svn: 238513
This was a bug for bug compatibility with gas that is completely unnecessary.
If a _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_ symbol is used, it will already be created by
the time we get to the ELF writer.
llvm-svn: 238432
Normally an ELF .o has two string tables, one for symbols, one for section
names.
With the scheme of naming sections like ".text.foo" where foo is a symbol,
there is a big potential saving in using a single one.
Building llvm+clang+lld with master and with this patch the results were:
master: 193,267,008 bytes
patch: 186,107,952 bytes
master non unique section names: 183,260,192 bytes
patch non unique section names: 183,118,632 bytes
So using non usique saves 10,006,816 bytes, and the patch saves 7,159,056 while
still using distinct names for the sections.

During ELF writing, there is no need to further relax the sections, so we
should not be creating fragments. This patch avoids doing so in all cases
but debug section compression (that is next).
Also, the ELF format is fairly simple to write. We can do a single pass over
the sections to write them out and compute the section header table.
llvm-svn: 236235
Instead of accumulating the content in a fragment first, just write it
to the output stream.
Also put it first in the section table, so that we never have to worry
about its index being >= SHN_LORESERVE.
llvm-svn: 236145
Finish off PR23080 by renaming the debug info IR constructs from `MD*`
to `DI*`. The last of the `DIDescriptor` classes were deleted in
r235356, and the last of the related typedefs removed in r235413, so
this has all baked for about a week.
Note: If you have out-of-tree code (like a frontend), I recommend that
you get everything compiling and tests passing with the *previous*
commit before updating to this one. It'll be easier to keep track of
what code is using the `DIDescriptor` hierarchy and what you've already
updated, and I think you're extremely unlikely to insert bugs. YMMV of
course.
Back to *this* commit: I did this using the rename-md-di-nodes.sh
upgrade script I've attached to PR23080 (both code and testcases) and
filtered through clang-format-diff.py. I edited the tests for
test/Assembler/invalid-generic-debug-node-*.ll by hand since the columns
were off-by-three. It should work on your out-of-tree testcases (and
code, if you've followed the advice in the previous paragraph).
Some of the tests are in badly named files now (e.g.,
test/Assembler/invalid-mdcompositetype-missing-tag.ll should be
'dicompositetype'); I'll come back and move the files in a follow-up
commit.
llvm-svn: 236120
This matches other assemblers and is less unexpected (e.g. PR23227).
On ELF, I tried binutils gas v2.24 and nasm 2.10.09, and they both
agree on LShr. On COFF, I couldn't get my hands on an assembler yet,
so don't change the behavior. For now, don't change it on non-AArch64
Darwin either, as the other assembler is gas v1.38, which does an AShr.

llvm-svn: 235300
Similar to r235222, but for the weak symbol case.
In an "ideal" assembler/object format an expression would always refer to the
final value and A-B would only be computed from a section in the same
comdat as A and B with A and B strong.
Unfortunately that is not the case with debug info on ELF, so we need an
heuristic. Since we need an heuristic, we may as well use the same one as
gas:
* call weak_sym : produces a relocation, even if in the same section.
* A - weak_sym and weak_sym -A: don't produce a relocation if we can
compute it.
This fixes pr23272 and changes the fix of pr22815 to match what gas does.
llvm-svn: 235227
Part of pr23272.
A small annoyance with the assembly syntax we implement is that given an
expression there is no way to know if what is desired is the value of that
expression for the symbols in this file or for the final values of those
symbols in a link.
The first case is useful for use in sections that get discarded or ignored
if the section they are describing is discarded.
For axample, consider A-B where A and B are in the same comdat section.
We can compute the value of the difference in the section that is present in
the current .o and if that section survives to the final DSO the value will
still will be correct.
But the section is in a comdat. Another section from another object file
might be used istead. We know that that section will define A and B, but
we have no idea what the value of A-B might be.
In practice we have to assume that the intention is to compute the value
in the current section since otherwise the is no way to create something like
the debug aranges section.
llvm-svn: 235222
Linkers normally read all the relocations upfront to compute the references
between sections. Putting them together is a bit more cache friendly.
I benchmarked linking a Release+Asserts clang with gold on a vm. I tried all
4 combinations of --gc-sections/no --gc-section hot and cold cache.
I cleared the cache with
echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
and warmed it up by running the link once before timing the subsequent ones.

Many of these predate llvm-readobj. With elf-dump we had to match
a relocation to symbol number and symbol number to symbol name or
section number.
llvm-svn: 235015
One could make the argument for writing it immediately after the ELF header,
but writing it in the middle of the sections like we were doing just makes
it harder for no reason.
llvm-svn: 234400
Before when deciding if we needed a relocation in A-B, we wore only checking
if A was weak.
This fixes the asymmetry.
The "InSet" argument should probably be renamed to "ForValue", since InSet is
very MachO specific, but doing so in this patch would make it hard to read.
This fixes PR22815.
llvm-svn: 234165
This allows the compiler/assembly programmer to switch back to a
section. This in turn fixes the bootstrap failure on powerpc (tested
on gcc110) without changing the ppc codegen at all.
I will try to cleanup the various getELFSection overloads in a followup patch.
Just using a default argument now would lead to ambiguities.
llvm-svn: 234099
Fixes PR19582.
Previously, when an asm assignment (.set or =) was created, we would look up
the section immediately in MCSymbol::setVariableValue. This caused symbols
to receive the wrong section if the RHS of the assignment had not been seen
yet. This had a knock-on effect in the object file emitters, causing them
to emit extra symbols, or to give symbols the wrong visibility or the wrong
section. For example, in the following asm:
.data
.Llocal:
.text
leaq .Llocal1(%rip), %rdi
.Llocal1 = .Llocal2
.Llocal2 = .Llocal
the first assignment would give .Llocal1 a null section, which would never get
fixed up by the second assignment. This would cause the ELF object file emitter
to consider .Llocal1 to be an undefined symbol and give it external linkage,
even though .Llocal1 should not have been emitted at all in the object file.
Or in the following asm:
alias_to_local = Ltmp0
Ltmp0:
the Mach-O object file emitter would give the alias_to_local symbol a n_type
of N_SECT and a n_sect of 0. This is invalid under the Mach-O specification,
which requires N_SECT symbols to receive a non-zero section number if the
symbol is defined in a section in the object file.
https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/DeveloperTools/Conceptual/MachORuntime/#//apple_ref/c/tag/nlist
After this change we do not look up the section when the assignment is created,
but instead look it up on demand and store it in Section, which is treated
as a cache if the symbol is a variable symbol.
This change also fixes a bug in MCExpr::FindAssociatedSection. Previously,
if we saw a subtraction, we would return the first referenced section, even in
cases where we should have been returning the absolute pseudo-section. Now we
always return the absolute pseudo-section for expressions that subtract two
section-derived expressions. This isn't always correct (e.g. if one of the
sections ends up being laid out at an absolute address), but it's probably
the best we can do without more context.
This allows us to remove code in two places where we appear to have been
working around this bug, in MachObjectWriter::markAbsoluteVariableSymbols
and in X86AsmPrinter::EmitStartOfAsmFile.

Move the specialized metadata nodes for the new debug info hierarchy
into place, finishing off PR22464. I've done bootstraps (and all that)
and I'm confident this commit is NFC as far as DWARF output is
concerned. Let me know if I'm wrong :).
The code changes are fairly mechanical:
- Bumped the "Debug Info Version".
- `DIBuilder` now creates the appropriate subclass of `MDNode`.
- Subclasses of DIDescriptor now expect to hold their "MD"
counterparts (e.g., `DIBasicType` expects `MDBasicType`).
- Deleted a ton of dead code in `AsmWriter.cpp` and `DebugInfo.cpp`
for printing comments.
- Big update to LangRef to describe the nodes in the new hierarchy.
Feel free to make it better.
Testcase changes are enormous. There's an accompanying clang commit on
its way.
If you have out-of-tree debug info testcases, I just broke your build.
- `upgrade-specialized-nodes.sh` is attached to PR22564. I used it to
update all the IR testcases.
- Unfortunately I failed to find way to script the updates to CHECK
lines, so I updated all of these by hand. This was fairly painful,
since the old CHECKs are difficult to reason about. That's one of
the benefits of the new hierarchy.
This work isn't quite finished, BTW. The `DIDescriptor` subclasses are
almost empty wrappers, but not quite: they still have loose casting
checks (see the `RETURN_FROM_RAW()` macro). Once they're completely
gutted, I'll rename the "MD" classes to "DI" and kill the wrappers. I
also expect to make a few schema changes now that it's easier to reason
about everything.

The ELF format is used on Windows by the MCJIT engine. Thus, on Windows, the
ELFObjectWriter can encounter symbols mangled using the MS Visual Studio C++
name mangling. Symbols mangled using the MSVC C++ name mangling can legally
have "@@@" as a substring. The EFLObjectWriter should not interpret the "@@@"
substring as specifying GNU-style symbol versioning. The ELFObjectWriter
therefore check for the MSVC C++ name mangling prefix which is either "?", "@?",
"imp_?" or "imp_?@".

This commit moves `MDLocation`, finishing off PR21433. There's an

This changes the schema for `DebugLoc` and `DILocation` from:
!{i32 3, i32 7, !7, !8}
to:
!MDLocation(line: 3, column: 7, scope: !7, inlinedAt: !8)
Note that empty fields (line/column: 0 and inlinedAt: null) don't get
printed by the assembly writer.
llvm-svn: 226048
Now that `Metadata` is typeless, reflect that in the assembly. These
are the matching assembly changes for the metadata/value split in
r223802.
- Only use the `metadata` type when referencing metadata from a call
intrinsic -- i.e., only when it's used as a `Value`.
- Stop pretending that `ValueAsMetadata` is wrapped in an `MDNode`
when referencing it from call intrinsics.
So, assembly like this:
define @foo(i32 %v) {
call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{i32 %v}, metadata !0)
call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{i32 7}, metadata !0)
call void @llvm.foo(metadata !1, metadata !0)
call void @llvm.foo(metadata !3, metadata !0)
call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{metadata !3}, metadata !0)
ret void, !bar !2
}
!0 = metadata !{metadata !2}
!1 = metadata !{i32* @global}
!2 = metadata !{metadata !3}
!3 = metadata !{}
turns into this:
define @foo(i32 %v) {
call void @llvm.foo(metadata i32 %v, metadata !0)
call void @llvm.foo(metadata i32 7, metadata !0)
call void @llvm.foo(metadata i32* @global, metadata !0)
call void @llvm.foo(metadata !3, metadata !0)
call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{!3}, metadata !0)
ret void, !bar !2
}
!0 = !{!2}
!1 = !{i32* @global}
!2 = !{!3}
!3 = !{}

Currently, llvm always emits a DWARF CIE with a version of 1, even when emitting
DWARF 3 or 4, which both support CIE version 3. This patch makes it emit the
newer CIE version when we are emitting DWARF 3 or 4. This will not reduce
compatibility, as we already emit other DWARF3/4 features, and is worth doing as
the DWARF3 spec removed some ambiguities in the interpretation of call frame
information.
It also fixes a minor bug where the "return address" field of the CIE was
encoded as a ULEB128, which is only valid when the CIE version is 3. There are
no test changes for this, because (as far as I can tell) none of the platforms
that we test have a return address register with a DWARF register number >127.

GAS documents the .type directive as having an optional comma following the key
symbol name when using the STT_<TYPE_IN_UPPER_CASE> form. However, it treats
the comma as optional in all cases. This makes the IAS support both forms of
inputs. Furthermore, the prefixed forms take either the upper case name or the
lower case alias.
The tests are split into two separate sets as the hash character serves as a
comment character on x86, which is tested in the second set by using arm-elf
which uses the at symbol as a comment character.
llvm-svn: 210407
The fix itself is fairly simple: move getAccessVariant to MCValue so that we
replace the old weak expression evaluation with the far more general
EvaluateAsRelocatable.
This then requires that EvaluateAsRelocatable stop when it finds a non
trivial reference kind. And that in turn requires the ELF writer to look
harder for weak references.
Last but not least, this found a case where we were being bug by bug
compatible with gas and accepting an invalid input. I reported pr19647
to track it.
llvm-svn: 207920
We already do this for shstrtab, so might as well do it for strtab. This
extracts the string table building code into a separate class. The idea
is to use it for other object formats too.
I mostly wanted to do this for the general principle, but it does save a
little bit on object file size. I tried this on a clang bootstrap and
saved 0.54% on the sum of object file sizes (1.14 MB out of 212 MB for
a release build).

When evaluating an assembly expression for a relocation, we want to
stop at MCSymbols that are in the symbol table, even if they are variables.
This is needed since the semantics may require that the relocation use them.
That is not the case when computing the value of a symbol in the symbol table.
There are no relocations in this case and we have to keep going until we hit
a section or find out that the expression doesn't have an assembly time
value.
llvm-svn: 207445
The symbol table itself has no relocations, so it is not possible to represent
things like
a = undefined + 1
With the patch we just omit these variables. That matches the behaviour of the

Both ZLIB and the debug info compressed section header ("ZLIB" + the
size of the uncompressed data) take some constant overhead so in some
cases the compressed data is actually larger than the uncompressed data.
In these cases, just don't compress or rename the section at all.
llvm-svn: 206659
While unnamed relocations are already cached in side tables in
ELFObjectWriter::RecordRelocation, symbols still need their fragments
updated to refer to the newly compressed fragment (even if that fragment
isn't big enough to fit the offset). Even though we only create
temporary symbols in debug info sections this comes up in 32 bit builds
where even temporary symbols in mergeable sections (such as debug_str)
have to be emitted as named symbols.
I tried a few other ways to do this but they all didn't work for various
reasons:
1) Canonicalize the MCSymbolData in RecordRelocation, nulling out the
Fragment (so it didn't have to be updated by CompressDebugSection). This
doesn't work because some code relies on symbols having fragments to
indicate that they're defined, I think.
2) Canonicalize the MCSymbolData in RecordRelocation to be "first
fragment + absolute offset" so it would be cheaper to just test and
update the fragment in CompressDebugSections. This doesn't work because
the offset computed in RecordRelocation isn't that of the symbol's
fragment, it's the passed in fragment (I haven't figured out what that
fragment is - perhaps it's the location where the relocation is to be
written). And if the fragment offset has to be computed only for this
use we might as well just do it when we need to, in
CompressDebugSection.
I also added an assert to help catch this a bit more clearly, even
though it is UB. The test case improvements would either assert fail
and/or valgrind vail without the fix, even if they wouldn't necessarily
fail the FileCheck output.

This allows correct relocations to be generated for a symbolic
address that is being adjusted by a negative constant. Since r204294,
such expressions have triggered undefined behavior when LLVM was built
without assertions.
Credit goes to Rafael for this patch; I'm submitting it on his behalf
as he is on vacation this week.

To support compressing the debug_line section that contains multiple
fragments (due, I believe, to variation in choices of line table
encoding depending on the size of instruction ranges in the actual
program code) we needed to support compressing multiple MCFragments in a
single pass.
This patch implements that behavior by mutating the post-relaxed and
relocated section to be the compressed form of its former self,
including renaming the section.
This is a more flexible (and less invasive, to a degree) implementation
that will allow for other features such as "use compression only if it's
smaller than the uncompressed data".
Compressing debug_frame would be a possible further extension to this
work, but I've left it for now. The hurdle there is alignment sections -
which might require going as far as to refactor
MCAssembler.cpp:writeFragment to handle writing to a byte buffer or an
MCObjectWriter (there's already a virtual call there, so it shouldn't
add substantial compile-time cost) which could in turn involve
refactoring MCAsmBackend::writeNopData to use that same abstraction...
which involves touching all the backends. This would remove the limited
handling of fragment writing seen in
ELFObjectWriter.cpp:getUncompressedData which would be nice - but it's
more invasive.
I did discover that I (perhaps obviously) don't need to handle
relocations when I rewrite the fragments - since the relocations have
already been applied and computed (and stored into
ELFObjectWriter::Relocations) by this stage (necessarily, because we
need to have written any immediate values or assembly-time relocations
into the data already before we compress it, which we have). The test
case doesn't necessarily cover that in detail - I can add more test
coverage if that's preferred.

To support compression for debug_line and debug_frame a different
approach is required. To simplify review, revert the old implementation
and XFAIL the test case. New implementation to follow shortly.
Reverts r205059 and r204958.

This moves one case of raw text checking down into the MCStreamer
interfaces in the form of a virtual function, even if we ultimately end
up consolidating on the one-or-many line tables issue one day, this is
nicer in the interim. This just generally streamlines a bunch of use
cases into a common code path.

I don't think this is reachable by any frontend (why would you transform
asm to asm+debug info?) but it helps tidy up some of this code, avoid
the weird special case of "emit the first CU, store the label, then emit
the rest" in MCDwarfLineTable::Emit by instead having the
DWARF-for-assembly case use the same codepath as DwarfDebug.cpp, by
registering the label of the debug_line section, thus causing it to be
emitted. (with a special case in asm output to just emit the label since
asm output uses the .loc directives, etc, rather than the debug_loc
directly)

When LLVM is not built with zlib, nocompression.s will test
for the error message. But this test case will cause breakage
because the exit code is non-zero. This commit fix this issue
by adding "not" to the command.
