Adrian Prantl 1db6486fb1 Don't compose DWARF expressions with multiple subregisters.
If a register location can only be described by a complex expression
(i.e., multiple subregisters) it doesn't safely compose with another
complex expression. For example, it is not possible to apply a
DW_OP_deref operation to multiple DW_OP_pieces.

Teresa Johnson 9b4b8c8d7b Enable stripping of multiple DILocation on !llvm.loop metadata
Summary:
I found that stripDebugInfo was still leaving significant amounts of
debug info due to !llvm.loop that contained DILocation after stripping.
The support for stripping debug info on !llvm.loop added in r293377 only
removes a single DILocation. Enhance that to remove all DILocation from
!llvm.loop.

Zachary Turner 2ed2aa75bf [pdb] Fix an uninitialized read, and add a test for it.
This was originally reported in pr32249, uncovered by PTVS-Studio.
There was no code coverage for this path because it was
difficult to construct odd-case PDB files that were not generated
by cl.

Now that we can write construct minimal PDB files from YAML,
it's easy to construct fragments that generate whatever we want.

In this patch I add a test that creates 2 type records. One
with a unique name, and one without. I verify that we can go
from PDB to Yaml with no errors. In a future patch I'd like
to add something like llvm-pdbdump raw -lookup-type that will
just dump one record and nothing else, which should make it
a bit cleaner to find this kind of thing.

Zachary Turner 05d5e6136f [PDB] Add support for parsing Flags from PDB Stream.
This was discovered when running `llvm-pdbdump diff` against
two files, the second of which was generated by running the
first one through pdb2yaml and then yaml2pdb.

The second one was missing some bytes from the PDB Stream, and
tracking this down showed that at the end of the PDB Stream were
some additional bytes that we were ignoring. Looking back
to the reference code, these seem to specify some additional
flags that indicate whether the PDB supports various optional
features.

This patch adds support for reading, writing, and round-tripping
these flags through YAML and the raw dumper, and updates the
tests accordingly.

Adrian Prantl 981f03e6a2 PR32288: More efficient encoding for DWARF expr subregister access.
Citing http://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32288

  The DWARF generated by LLVM includes this location:

  0x55 0x93 0x04 DW_OP_reg5 DW_OP_piece(4) When GCC's DWARF is simply
  0x55 (DW_OP_reg5) without the DW_OP_piece. I believe it's reasonable
  to assume the DWARF consumer knows which part of a register
  logically holds the value (low bytes, high bytes, how many bytes,
  etc) for a primitive value like an integer.

This patch gets rid of the redundant DW_OP_piece when a subregister is
at offset 0. It also adds previously missing subregister masking when
a subregister is followed by another operation.

(This reapplies r297960 with two additional testcase updates).

Adrian Prantl ea8880b81f LiveDebugValues: Assume calls never clobber SP.
A call should never modify the stack pointer, but some backends are
not so sure about this and never list SP in the regmask. For the

we hopefully can retire soon).

Reid Kleckner f7c0980c10 Elide argument copies during instruction selection
Summary:
Avoids tons of prologue boilerplate when arguments are passed in memory
and left in memory. This can happen in a debug build or in a release
build when an argument alloca is escaped. This will dramatically affect
the code size of x86 debug builds, because X86 fast isel doesn't handle
arguments passed in memory at all. It only handles the x86_64 case of up
to 6 basic register parameters.

This is implemented by analyzing the entry block before ISel to identify
copy elision candidates. A copy elision candidate is an argument that is
used to fully initialize an alloca before any other possibly escaping
uses of that alloca. If an argument is a copy elision candidate, we set
a flag on the InputArg. If the the target generates loads from a fixed
stack object that matches the size and alignment requirements of the
alloca, the SelectionDAG builder will delete the stack object created
for the alloca and replace it with the fixed stack object. The load is
left behind to satisfy any remaining uses of the argument value. The
store is now dead and is therefore elided. The fixed stack object is
also marked as mutable, as it may now be modified by the user, and it
would be invalid to rematerialize the initial load from it.

Teresa Johnson 76b5b7493c Handle link of NoDebug CU with a CU that has debug emission enabled
Summary:
This is an issue both with regular and Thin LTO. When we link together
a DICompileUnit that is marked NoDebug (e.g when compiling with -g0
but applying an AutoFDO profile, which requires location tracking
in the compiler) and a DICompileUnit with debug emission enabled,
we can have failures during dwarf debug generation. Specifically,
when we have inlined from the NoDebug compile unit into the debug
compile unit, we can fail during construction of the abstract and
inlined scope DIEs. This is because the SPMap does not include NoDebug
CUs (they are skipped in the debug_compile_units_iterator).

This patch fixes the failures by skipping locations from NoDebug CUs
when extracting lexical scopes.

Store instructions can have more than one memory operand as a result
of optimizations that fold different stores into one.
When we identify spill instructions to generate DBG_VALUE instructions
to record the spilling of a variable, we disregard stores with
multiple memory operands for now. We may miss some relevant spills but
the handling is a bit more complex, so we'll do it in a different patch.

It caused undefined behavior in VarLoc. As far as I investigated,

  - VarLoc::VarLoc() treats negative offset value as InvalidKind.
    Consider the case that (int64_t)MI.getOperand(1).getImm() is negative and whether it satisfies ((uint64_t)Offset < (1ULL << 32)).

  - Comparison operators in VarLoc behave undefined since VarLoc::Loc.Hash is uninitialized in case of InvalidKind.

I guess Offset (in VarLoc) could be made aware of signed, but I am not sure.
So I have reverted it for now.

David Blaikie a0e3c75187 DebugInfo: ensure type and namespace names are included in pubnames/pubtypes even when they are only present in type units
While looking to add support for placing singular types (types that will
only be emitted in one place (such as attached to a strong vtable or
explicit template instantiation definition)) not in type units (since
type units have overhead) I stumbled across that change causing an
increase in pubtypes.

Turns out we were missing some types from type units if they were only
referenced from other type units and not from the debug_info section.

This fixes that, following GCC's line of describing the offset of such
entities as the CU die (since there's no compile unit-relative offset
that would describe such an entity - they aren't in the CU). Also like
GCC, this change prefers to describe the type stub within the CU rather
than the "just use the CU offset" fallback where possible. This may give
the DWARF consumer some opportunity to find the extra info in the type
stub - though I'm not sure GDB does anything with this currently.

The size of the pubnames/pubtypes sections now match exactly with or
without type units enabled.

This nearly triples (+189%) the pubtypes section for a clang self-host
and grows pubnames by 0.07% (without compression). For a total of 8%
increase in debug info sections of the objects of a Split DWARF build
when using type units.

Rafael Espindola 13a79bbfe5 Change how we handle section symbols on ELF.
On ELF every section can have a corresponding section symbol. When in
an assembly file we have

.quad .text

the '.text' refers to that symbol.

The way we used to handle them is to leave .text an undefined symbol
until the very end when the object writer would map them to the
actual section symbol.

The problem with that is that anything before the end would see an
undefined symbol. This could result in bad diagnostics
(test/MC/AArch64/label-arithmetic-diags-elf.s), or incorrect results
when using the asm streamer (est/MC/Mips/expansion-jal-sym-pic.s).

Fixing this will also allow using the section symbol earlier for
setting sh_link of SHF_METADATA sections.

This patch includes a few hacks to avoid changing our behaviour when
handling conflicts between section symbols and other symbols. I
reported pr31850 to track that.

Robert Lougher 5bf0416f45 Reapply "[SimplifyCFG] In sinkLastInstruction correctly set debugloc of common inst"
This reapplies r289828 (reverted in r289833 as it broke the address sanitizer). The
debugloc is now only set when the instruction is not a call, as this causes the
verifier to assert (the inliner requires an inlinable callsite to have a debug loc
if the caller and callee have debug info).

Original commit message:

Simplify CFG will try to sink the last instruction in a series of basic blocks,
creating a "common" instruction in the successor block (sinkLastInstruction).
When it does this, the debug location of the single instruction should be the
merged debug locations of the commoned instructions.

Adrian Prantl bceaaa9643 [IR] Remove the DIExpression field from DIGlobalVariable.
This patch implements PR31013 by introducing a
DIGlobalVariableExpression that holds a pair of DIGlobalVariable and
DIExpression.

Currently, DIGlobalVariables holds a DIExpression. This is not the
best way to model this:

(1) The DIGlobalVariable should describe the source level variable,
    not how to get to its location.

(2) It makes it unsafe/hard to update the expressions when we call
    replaceExpression on the DIGLobalVariable.

(3) It makes it impossible to represent a global variable that is in
    more than one location (e.g., a variable with multiple
    DW_OP_LLVM_fragment-s). We also moved away from attaching the
    DIExpression to DILocalVariable for the same reasons.

This reapplies r289902 with additional testcase upgrades and a change
to the Bitcode record for DIGlobalVariable, that makes upgrading the
old format unambiguous also for variables without DIExpressions.

This way we only need one Bitcode upgrade for both changes (with a
version flag in the bitcode record to safely distinguish the record

One more attempt to re-commit the patch r285355, which I had to revert in r285362, because some tests were failing (the reason is because the size of the line_table varied depending on the full file name).

In the past the compiler always emitted .debug_line version 2, though some opcodes from DWARF 3 (e.g. DW_LNS_set_prologue_end, DW_LNS_set_epilogue_begin or DW_LNS_set_isa) and from DWARF 4 could be emitted by the compiler.

Adrian Prantl 8fafb8d378 Fix LLVM's use of DW_OP_bit_piece in DWARF expressions.
LLVM's use of DW_OP_bit_piece is incorrect and a based on a
misunderstanding of the wording in the DWARF specification. The offset
argument of DW_OP_bit_piece refers to the offset into the location
that is on the top of the DWARF expression stack, and not an offset
into the source variable. This has since also been clarified in the
DWARF specification.

This patch fixes all uses of DW_OP_bit_piece to emit the correct
offset and simplifies the DwarfExpression class to semi-automaticaly
emit empty DW_OP_pieces to adjust the offset of the source variable,
thus simplifying the code using DwarfExpression.

While this is an incompatible bugfix, in practice I don't expect this
to be much of a problem since LLVM's old interpretation and the
correct interpretation of DW_OP_bit_piece differ only when there are
gaps in the fragmented locations of the described variables or if
individual fragments are smaller than a byte. LLDB at least won't
interpret locations with gaps in them because is has no way to present
undefined bits in a variable, and there is a high probability that an
old-form expression will be malformed when interpreted correctly,
because the DW_OP_bit_piece offset will be outside of the location at
the top of the stack.

As a nice side-effect, this patch enables us to use a more efficient
encoding for subregisters: In order to express a sub-register at a
non-zero offset we now use a DW_OP_bit_piece instead of shifting the
value into place manually.

This patch also adds missing test coverage for code paths that weren't
exercised before.

The relocations for `DIEEntry::EmitValue` were wrong for Win64

Andrea Di Biagio 32d5aedd5b [InlineFunction] Do not propagate the callsite debug location to instructions inlined from functions with debug info.
When a function F is inlined, InlineFunction extends the debug location of every
instruction inlined from F by adding an InlinedAt.

However, if an instruction has a 'null' debug location, InlineFunction would
propagate the callsite debug location to it. This behavior existed since
revision 210459.

Revision 210459 was originally committed specifically to workaround the lack of
debug information for instructions inlined from intrinsic functions (which are
usually declared with attributes `__always_inline__, __nodebug__`).

The problem with revision 210459 is that it doesn't make any sort of distinction
between instructions inlined from a 'nodebug' function and instructions which
are inlined from a function built with debug info. This issue may lead to
incorrect stepping in the debugger.

This patch works under the assumption that a nodebug function does not have a
DISubprogram. When a function F is inlined into another function G,
InlineFunction checks if F has debug info associated with it.

For nodebug functions, the InlineFunction logic is unchanged (i.e. it would
still propagate the callsite debugloc to the inlined instructions). Otherwise,
InlineFunction no longer propagates the callsite debug location.

Adrian Prantl 941fa7588b [DIExpression] Introduce a dedicated DW_OP_LLVM_fragment operation
so we can stop using DW_OP_bit_piece with the wrong semantics.

The entire back story can be found here:
http://lists.llvm.org/pipermail/llvm-commits/Week-of-Mon-20161114/405934.html

The gist is that in LLVM we've been misinterpreting DW_OP_bit_piece's
offset field to mean the offset into the source variable rather than
the offset into the location at the top the DWARF expression stack. In
order to be able to fix this in a subsequent patch, this patch
introduces a dedicated DW_OP_LLVM_fragment operation with the
semantics that we used to apply to DW_OP_bit_piece, which is what we
actually need while inside of LLVM. This patch is complete with a
bitcode upgrade for expressions using the old format. It does not yet
fix the DWARF backend to use DW_OP_bit_piece correctly.

Implementation note: We discussed several options for implementing
this, including reserving a dedicated field in DIExpression for the
fragment size and offset, but using an custom operator at the end of
the expression works just fine and is more efficient because we then
only pay for it when we need it.

Adrian Prantl 3502f2089c Emit the DW_AT_type for a C++ static member definition
if it is more specific than the one in its DW_AT_specification.

If a static member is an array, the translation unit containing the
member definition may have a more specific type (including its length)
than TUs only seeing the class declaration. This patch adds a
DW_AT_type to the member's DW_TAG_variable in addition to the
DW_AT_specification in these cases. The member type in the
DW_AT_specification still shows the more generic type (without the
length) to avoid defeating type uniquing.

The DWARF standard discourages “duplicating” a DW_AT_type in a member
variable definition but doesn’t explicitly forbid it. Having the more
specific type (with the array length) available is what allows the
debugger to print the contents of a static array member variable.

Andrea Di Biagio fa90c692db [CodeGenPrepare] When moving a zext near to its associated load, do not retain the original debug location.
CodeGenPrepare knows how to move a zext of a load into the same basic block
where the load lives. The goal is to help ISel match a zero-extending load
instead of two separated instructions.

CGP attempts to move a zext computation even if it lives in a basic block that
does not post-dominate the load's basic block. That means, the hoisted zext may
be speculated. Preserving the zext location would hurt the debugging experience
and the quality of sample pgo.
With this patch, when moving a zext near to its associated load, CGP no longer
propagates the zext's debug location. Instead, CGP conservatively reuses the
same debug location for the load and the zext.

An alternative approach would be to assign an artificial line-0 location to the
zext. However we don't want to over-use the 'line-0' for this particular case
because it would have a size cost in the line-table section for no additional
benefit.

Previously, PDBFileBuilder::initialize took a superblock assuming

that's probably the only use case in which that is useful.
When we are creating a PDB file on the fly, we have to backfill the

Adrian Prantl 7f5866c227 Teach LiveDebugValues about lexical scopes.
This addresses PR26055 LiveDebugValues is very slow.

Contrary to the old LiveDebugVariables pass LiveDebugValues currently
doesn't look at the lexical scopes before inserting a DBG_VALUE
intrinsic. This means that we often propagate DBG_VALUEs much further
down than necessary. This is especially noticeable in large C++
functions with many inlined method calls that all use the same
"this"-pointer.

For example, in the following code it makes no sense to propagate the
inlined variable a from the first inlined call to f() into any of the
subsequent basic blocks, because the variable will always be out of
scope:

void sink(int a);
void __attribute((always_inline)) f(int a) { sink(a); }
void foo(int i) {
   f(i);
   if (i)
     f(i);
   f(i);
}

This patch reuses the LexicalScopes infrastructure we have for
LiveDebugVariables to take this into account.

The effect on compile time and memory consumption is quite noticeable:
I tested a benchmark that is a large C++ source with an enormous
amount of inlined "this"-pointers that would previously eat >24GiB
(most of them for DBG_VALUE intrinsics) and whose compile time was
dominated by LiveDebugValues. With this patch applied the memory
consumption is 1GiB and 1.7% of the time is spent in LiveDebugValues.

Reid Kleckner a9f4cc9510 [codeview] Add new directives to record inlined call site line info
Summary:
Previously we were trying to represent this with the "contains" list of
the .cv_inline_linetable directive, which was not enough information.
Now we directly represent the chain of inlined call sites, so we know
what location to emit when we encounter a .cv_loc directive of an inner
inlined call site while emitting the line table of an outer function or
inlined call site. Fixes PR29146.

Also fixes PR29147, where we would crash when .cv_loc directives crossed
sections. Now we write down the section of the first .cv_loc directive,
and emit an error if any other .cv_loc directive for that function is in
a different section.

Also fixes issues with discontiguous inlined source locations, like in
this example:

  volatile int unlikely_cond = 0;
  extern void __declspec(noreturn) abort();
  __forceinline void f() {
    if (!unlikely_cond) abort();
  }
  int main() {
    unlikely_cond = 0;
    f();
    unlikely_cond = 0;
  }

Previously our tables gave bad location information for the 'abort'
call, and the debugger wouldn't snow the inlined stack frame for 'f'.
It is important to emit good line tables for this code pattern, because
it comes up whenever an asan bug occurs in an inlined function. The
__asan_report* stubs are generally placed after the normal function
epilogue, leading to discontiguous regions of inlined code.

This was originally submitted in r280549, and reverted in r280577

Matthias Braun 1eb473680a MachineFunctionProperties/MIRParser: Rename AllVRegsAllocated->NoVRegs, compute it
Rename AllVRegsAllocated to NoVRegs. This avoids the connotation of
running after register and simply describes that no vregs are used in
a machine function. With that we can simply compute the property and do
not need to dump/parse it in .mir files.

Oliver Stannard 9aa6f010a4 [ARM] Generate consistent frame records for Thumb2
There is not an official documented ABI for frame pointers in Thumb2,
but we should try to emit something which is useful.

We use r7 as the frame pointer for Thumb code, which currently means
that if a function needs to save a high register (r8-r11), it will get
pushed to the stack between the frame pointer (r7) and link register
(r14). This means that while a stack unwinder can follow the chain of
frame pointers up the stack, it cannot know the offset to lr, so does
not know which functions correspond to the stack frames.

To fix this, we need to push the callee-saved registers in two batches,
with the first push saving the low registers, fp and lr, and the second
push saving the high registers. This is already implemented, but
previously only used for iOS. This patch turns it on for all Thumb2
targets when frame pointers are required by the ABI, and the frame
pointer is r7 (Windows uses r11, so this isn't a problem there). If
frame pointer elimination is enabled we still emit a single push/pop
even if we need a frame pointer for other reasons, to avoid increasing
code size.

We must also ensure that lr is pushed to the stack when using a frame
pointer, so that we end up with a complete frame record. Situations that
could cause this were rare, because we already push lr in most
situations so that we can return using the pop instruction.

James Molloy 5bf2114265 [SimplifyCFG] Rewrite SinkThenElseCodeToEnd
[Recommitting now an unrelated assertion in SROA is sorted out]

The new version has several advantages:
  1) IMSHO it's more readable and neater
  2) It handles loads and stores properly
  3) It can handle any number of incoming blocks rather than just two. I'll be taking advantage of this in a followup patch.

With this change we can now finally sink load-modify-store idioms such as:

    if (a)
      return *b += 3;
    else
      return *b += 4;

    =>

    %z = load i32, i32* %y
    %.sink = select i1 %a, i32 5, i32 7
    %b = add i32 %z, %.sink
    store i32 %b, i32* %y
    ret i32 %b

When this works for switches it'll be even more powerful.

Round 4. This time we should handle all instructions correctly, and not replace any operands that need to be constant with variables.

This was really hard to determine safely, so the helper function should be put into the Instruction API. I'll do that as a followup.

The FPM is split at regular intervals across the MSF file, as the MS code
suggests. It turns out that the value of the interval is precisely the
block size. If the block size is 4096, then there are two Fpm pages every
4096 blocks.

So here we teach the PDBFile class to parse a split FPM, and also add more
options when dumping the FPM to display some additional information such
as orphaned pages (pages which the FPM says are allocated, but which
nothing appears to use), use after free pages (pages which the FPM says
are not allocated, but which are referenced by a stream), and multiple use
pages (pages which the FPM says are allocated but are used more than
once).

Block 1 and 2 of an MSF file are bit vectors that represent the
list of blocks allocated and free in the file. We had been using
these blocks to write stream data and other data, so we mark them
as the free page map now. We don't yet serialize these pages to

writing random data to them.

Reid Kleckner b5af11dfa3 [codeview] Add DISubprogram::ThisAdjustment
Summary:
This represents the adjustment applied to the implicit 'this' parameter
in the prologue of a virtual method in the MS C++ ABI. The adjustment is
always zero unless multiple inheritance is involved.

This increases the size of DISubprogram by 8 bytes, unfortunately. The
adjustment really is a signed 32-bit integer. If this size increase is
too much, we could probably win it back by splitting out a subclass with
info specific to virtual methods (virtuality, vindex, thisadjustment,
containingType).

David Majnemer 9319cbc045 [CodeView] Implement support for bitfields in LLVM
CodeView need to know the offset of the storage allocation for a

Clang emits them in reverse order to conform to the ABI, which requires
left-to-right destruction. As a result, the order doesn't fall out

Reid Kleckner 9f7f3e1e64 [codeview] Emit base class information from DW_TAG_inheritance nodes
There are two remaining issues here:
1. No vbptr information
2. Need to mention indirect virtual bases

Getting indirect virtual bases is just a matter of adding an "indirect"
flag, emitting them in the frontend, and ignoring them when appropriate
for DWARF.

All virtual bases use the same artificial vbptr field, so I think the
vbptr offset will be best represented by an implicit __vbptr$ClassName
member similar to our existing __vptr$ member.

Reid Kleckner 156a7239c1 [codeview] Add IntroducingVirtual debug info flag

Reid Kleckner 643dd83661 [codeview] Defer emission of all referenced complete records
This is the motivating example:
  struct B { int b; };
  struct A { B *b; };
  int f(A *p) { return p->b->b; }

Clang emits complete types for both A and B because they are required to
be complete, but our CodeView emission would only emit forward
declarations of A and B. This was a consequence of the fact that the A*
type must reference the forward declaration of A, which doesn't
reference B at all.

We can't eagerly emit complete definitions of A and B when we request
the forward declaration's type index because of recursive types like
linked lists. If we did that, our stack usage could get out of hand, and
it would be possible to lower a type while attempting to lower a type,
and we would need to double check if our type is already present in the
TypeIndexMap after all recursive getTypeIndex calls.

Instead, defer complete type emission until after all type lowering has
completed. This ensures that all referenced complete types are emitted,
and that type lowering is not re-entrant.
