Eric Liu 667e8ef7e1 [clangd] BackgroundIndex rebuilds symbol index periodically.
Summary:
Currently, background index rebuilds symbol index on every indexed file,
which can be inefficient. This patch makes it only rebuild symbol index periodically.
As the rebuild no longer happens too often, we could also build more efficient

Summary:
Code completion will suggest symbols from any scope (incl. inaccessible

As we are assigning relatively low scores for cross-namespace completion items, the overall code completion quality doesn't regress. The feature has been tried out by a few folks, and the feedback is generally positive, so I think it should be ready to be enabled by default.

Sam McCall 422c828dfc [clangd] Enable auto-index behind a flag.
Summary:
Ownership and configuration:
The auto-index (background index) is maintained by ClangdServer, like Dynamic.
(This means ClangdServer will be able to enqueue preamble indexing in future).
For now it's enabled by a simple boolean flag in ClangdServer::Options, but
we probably want to eventually allow injecting the storage strategy.

New 'sync' command:
In order to meaningfully test the integration (not just unit-test components)
we need a way for tests to ensure the asynchronous index reads/writes occur
before a certain point.
Because these tests and assertions are few, I think exposing an explicit "sync"
command for use in tests is simpler than allowing threading to be completely
disabled in the background index (as we do for TUScheduler).

Bugs:
I fixed a couple of trivial bugs I found while testing, but there's one I can't.
JSONCompilationDatabase::getAllFiles() may return relative paths, and currently
we trigger an assertion that assumes they are absolute.
There's no efficient way to resolve them (you have to retrieve the corresponding
command and then resolve against its directory property). In general I think
this behavior is broken and we should fix it in JSONCompilationDatabase and
require CompilationDatabase::getAllFiles() to be absolute.

Eric Liu c0ac4bb17c [clangd] Cleanup: stop passing around list of supported URI schemes.
Summary:
Instead of passing around a list of supported URI schemes in clangd, we
expose an interface to convert a path to URI using any compatible scheme
that has been registered. It favors customized schemes and falls
back to "file" when no other scheme works.

Changes in this patch are:
- URI::create(AbsPath, URISchemes) -> URI::create(AbsPath). The new API finds a
compatible scheme from the registry.
- Remove URISchemes option everywhere (ClangdServer, SymbolCollecter, FileIndex etc).
- Unit tests will use "unittest" by default.
- Move "test" scheme from ClangdLSPServer to ClangdMain.cpp, and only
register the test scheme when lit-test or enable-lit-scheme is set.
(The new flag is added to make lit protocol.test work; I wonder if there
is alternative here.)

Sam McCall f01ad10a36 [clangd] Support passing a relative path to -compile-commands-dir
Summary: This is useful when using clangd with CMake based projects in Visual Studio Code since when using CMake the `compile_commands.json` file is usually located in a `build` subdirectory which isn't a parent directory of the source files. Allowing passing relative paths to -compile-commands-dir allows specifying `clangd.arguments = ["-compile-commands-dir=build"]` in VSCode's settings file and having it work for each CMake based project that uses the `build` subdirectory as the build directory (instead of having to specify the absolute path to the compile commands directory for each separate project in VSCode's settings).

Sam McCall c008af6466 [clangd] Namespace style cleanup in cpp files. NFC.
Standardize on the most common namespace setup in our *.cpp files:
  using namespace llvm;
  namespace clang {
  namespace clangd {
  void foo(StringRef) { ... }
And remove redundant llvm:: qualifiers. (Except for cases like
make_unique where this causes problems with std:: and ADL).

This choice is pretty arbitrary, but some broad consistency is nice.
This is going to conflict with everything. Sorry :-/

Squash the other configurations:

A)
  using namespace llvm;
  using namespace clang;
  using namespace clangd;
  void clangd::foo(StringRef);
This is in some of the older files. (It prevents accidentally defining a
new function instead of one in the header file, for what that's worth).

B)
  namespace clang {
  namespace clangd {
  void foo(llvm::StringRef) { ... }
This is fine, but in practice the using directive often gets added over time.

C)
  namespace clang {
  namespace clangd {
  using namespace llvm; // inside the namespace
This was pretty common, but is a bit misleading: name lookup preferrs
clang::clangd::foo > clang::foo > llvm:: foo (no matter where the using
directive is).

Sam McCall 2c30fbcac5 [clangd] Lay JSONRPCDispatcher to rest.
Summary:
Most of its functionality is moved into ClangdLSPServer.
The decoupling between JSONRPCDispatcher, ProtocolCallbacks, ClangdLSPServer
was never real, and only served to obfuscate.

Some previous implicit/magic stuff is now explicit:
 - the return type of LSP method calls are now in the signature
 - no more reply() that gets the ID using global context magic
 - arg tracing no longer relies on RequestArgs::stash context magic either

This is mostly refactoring, but some deliberate fixes while here:
 - LSP method params are now by const reference
 - notifications and calls are now distinct namespaces.
   (some tests had protocol errors and needed updating)
 - we now reply to calls we failed to decode
 - outgoing calls use distinct IDs
A few error codes and message IDs changed in unimportant ways (see tests).

Sam McCall dc8f3cf8b0 [clangd] Refactor JSON-over-stdin/stdout code into Transport abstraction. (re-land r344620)
Summary:
This paves the way for alternative transports (mac XPC, maybe messagepack?),
and also generally improves layering: testing ClangdLSPServer becomes less of
a pipe dream, we split up the JSONOutput monolith, etc.

This isn't a final state, much of what remains in JSONRPCDispatcher can go away,
handlers can call reply() on the transport directly, JSONOutput can be renamed
to StreamLogger and removed, etc. But this patch is sprawling already.

The main observable change (see tests) is that hitting EOF on input is now an
error: the client should send the 'exit' notification.
This is defensible: the protocol doesn't spell this case out. Reproducing the
current behavior for all combinations of shutdown/exit/EOF clutters interfaces.
We can iterate on this if desired.

Sam McCall f469c64fef [clangd] Fix async index loading (from r341376).
Summary:
This wasn't actually async (due to std::future destructor blocking).
If it were, we would have clean shutdown issues if main returned
and destroyed Placeholder before the thread is done with it.

We could attempt to avoid any blocking by using shared_ptr or weak_ptr tricks so
the thread can detect Placeholder's destruction, but there are other potential
issues (e.g. loadIndex does tracing, and we'll destroy the tracer...)
Instead, once LSPServer::run returns, we wait for the index to finish loading
before exiting. Performance is not critical in this situation.

Sam McCall 50f3631057 [clangd] Define a compact binary serialization fomat for symbol slab/index.
Summary:
This is intended to replace the current YAML format for general use.
It's ~10x more compact than YAML, and ~40% more compact than gzipped YAML:
  llvmidx.riff = 20M, llvmidx.yaml = 272M, llvmidx.yaml.gz = 32M
It's also simpler/faster to read and write.

The format is a RIFF container (chunks of (type, size, data)) with:
 - a compressed string table
 - simple binary encoding of symbols (with varints for compactness)
It can be extended to include occurrences, Dex posting lists, etc.

There's no rich backwards-compatibility scheme, but a version number is included
so we can detect incompatible files and do ad-hoc back-compat.

Alternatives considered:
 - compressed YAML or JSON: bulky and slow to load
 - llvm bitstream: confusing model and libraries are hard to use. My attempt
   produced slightly larger files, and the code was longer and slower.
 - protobuf or similar: would be really nice (esp for back-compat) but the
   dependency is a big hassle
 - ad-hoc binary format without a container: it seems clear we're going
   to add posting lists and occurrences here, and that they will benefit
   from sharing a string table. The container makes it easy to debug
   these pieces in isolation, and make them optional.

Sam McCall b0138317d6 [clangd] SymbolOccurrences -> Refs and cleanup
Summary:
A few things that I noticed while merging the SwapIndex patch:
 - SymbolOccurrences and particularly SymbolOccurrenceSlab are unwieldy names,
   and these names appear *a lot*. Ref, RefSlab, etc seem clear enough
   and read/format much better.
 - The asymmetry between SymbolSlab and RefSlab (build() vs freeze()) is
   confusing and irritating, and doesn't even save much code.
   Avoiding RefSlab::Builder was my idea, but it was a bad one; add it.
 - DenseMap<SymbolID, ArrayRef<Ref>> seems like a reasonable compromise for
   constructing MemIndex - and means many less wasted allocations than the
   current DenseMap<SymbolID, vector<Ref*>> for FileIndex, and none for
   slabs.
 - RefSlab::find() is not actually used for anything, so we can throw
   away the DenseMap and keep the representation much more compact.
 - A few naming/consistency fixes: e.g. Slabs,Refs -> Symbols,Refs.

Sam McCall bed5885d9e [clangd] Upgrade logging facilities with levels and formatv.
Summary:
log() is split into four functions:
 - elog()/log()/vlog() have different severity levels, allowing filtering
 - dlog() is a lazy macro which uses LLVM_DEBUG - it logs to the logger, but
   conditionally based on -debug-only flag and is omitted in release builds

All logging functions use formatv-style format strings now, e.g:
  log("Could not resolve URI {0}: {1}", URI, Result.takeError());

Existing log sites have been split between elog/log/vlog by best guess.

This includes a workaround for passing Error to formatv that can be
simplified when D49170 or similar lands.

Sam McCall c18c280d23 [clangd] Add option to fold overloads into a single completion item.
Summary:
Adds a CodeCompleteOption to folds together compatible function/method overloads
into a single item. This feels pretty good (for editors with signatureHelp
support), but has limitations.

This happens in the code completion merge step, so there may be inconsistencies
(e.g. if only one overload made it into the index result list, no folding).

We don't want to bundle together completions that have different side-effects
(include insertion), because we can't constructo a coherent CompletionItem.
This may be confusing for users, as the reason for non-bundling may not
be immediately obvious. (Also, the implementation seems a little fragile)

Zachary Turner 1f67a3cba9 [FileSystem] Split up the OpenFlags enumeration.
This breaks the OpenFlags enumeration into two separate
enumerations: OpenFlags and CreationDisposition. The first
controls the behavior of the API depending on whether or not
the target file already exists, and is not a flags-based
enum. The second controls more flags-like values.

This yields a more easy to understand API, while also allowing
flags to be passed to the openForRead api, where most of the
values didn't make sense before. This also makes the apis more
testable as it becomes easy to enumerate all the configurations
which make sense, so I've added many new tests to exercise all
the different values.

Summary:
The EINTR loop around getline was added to fix an issue with mac gdb, but seems
to loop infinitely in rare cases on linux where the parent editor exits (most
reports with VSCode).
I can't work out how to fix this in a portable way with std::istream, but the
C APIs have clearer contracts and LLVM has a RetryAfterSignal function for use
with them which seems battle-tested.

While here, clean up some inconsistency around \n in log messages (now
add it only after JSON payloads), and reduce the scope of the
long-message handling which was only really added to fight fuzzers.

Marc-Andre Laperle b387b6e6dc [clangd] Implementation of workspace/symbol request
Summary:
This is a basic implementation of the "workspace/symbol" request which is
used to find symbols by a string query. Since this is similar to code completion
in terms of result, this implementation reuses the "fuzzyFind" in order to get
matches. For now, the scoring algorithm is the same as code completion and
improvements could be done in the future.

The index model doesn't contain quite enough symbols for this to cover
common symbols like methods, enum class enumerators, functions in unamed
namespaces, etc. The index model will be augmented separately to achieve this.

Sam McCall dd0566bb2c Adds a json::Expr type to represent intermediate JSON expressions.
Summary:
This form can be created with a nice clang-format-friendly literal syntax,
and gets escaping right. It knows how to call unparse() on our Protocol types.
All the places where we pass around JSON internally now use this type.

Object properties are sorted (stored as std::map) and so serialization is
canonicalized, with optional prettyprinting (triggered by a -pretty flag).
This makes the lit tests much nicer to read and somewhat nicer to debug.
(Unfortunately the completion tests use CHECK-DAG, which only has
line-granularity, so pretty-printing is disabled there. In future we
could make completion ordering deterministic, or switch to unittests).

Compared to the current approach, it has some efficiencies like avoiding copies
of string literals used as object keys, but is probably slower overall.
I think the code/test quality benefits are worth it.

This patch doesn't attempt to do anything about JSON *parsing*.
It takes direction from the proposal in this doc[1], but is limited in scope
and visibility, for now.
I am of half a mind just to use Expr as the target of a parser, and maybe do a
little string deduplication, but not bother with clever memory allocation.
That would be simple, and fast enough for clangd...

Sam McCall 8567cb3720 Performance tracing facility for clangd.
Summary:
This lets you visualize clangd's activity on different threads over time,
and understand critical paths of requests and object lifetimes.
The data produced can be visualized in Chrome (at chrome://tracing), or
in a standalone copy of catapult (http://github.com/catapult-project/catapult)

This patch consists of:
 - a command line flag "-trace" that causes clangd to emit JSON trace data
 - an API (in Trace.h) allowing clangd code to easily add events to the stream
 - several initial uses of this API to capture JSON-RPC requests, builds, logs

Example result: https://photos.app.goo.gl/12L9swaz5REGQ1rm1

Caveats:
 - JSON serialization is ad-hoc (isn't it everywhere?) so the API is
   limited to naming events rather than attaching arbitrary metadata.
   I'd like to fix this (I think we could use a JSON-object abstraction).
 - The recording is very naive: events are written immediately by
   locking a mutex. Contention on the mutex might disturb performance.
 - For now it just traces instants or spans on the current thread.
   There are other things that make sense to show (cross-thread flows,
   non-thread resources such as ASTs). But we have to start somewhere.

Some clients may wait on the reply from the shutdown request before sending an

client might block forever.

This also gives us the opportunity to do any global cleanups and/or
serializations of PCH preambles to disk, but I've left that out for now.
