Andrew Ng 77152a6b7a [LLD][ELF] Optimize linker script filename glob pattern matching NFC
Optimize the filename glob pattern matching in
LinkerScript::computeInputSections() and LinkerScript::shouldKeep().

Add InputFile::getNameForScript() which gets and if required caches the
Inputfile's name used for linker script matching. This avoids the
overhead of name creation that was in getFilename() in LinkerScript.cpp.

Add InputSectionDescription::matchesFile() and
SectionPattern::excludesFile() which perform the glob pattern matching
for an InputFile and make use of a cache of the previous result. As both
computeInputSections() and shouldKeep() process sections in order and
the sections of the same InputFile are contiguous, these single entry
caches can significantly speed up performance for more complex glob
patterns.

These changes have been seen to reduce link time with --gc-sections by
up to ~40% with linker scripts that contain KEEP filename glob patterns
such as "*crtbegin*.o".

Fangrui Song ba890da287 [ELF] Demote lazy symbols relative to a discarded section to Undefined
Fixes PR45594.

In `ObjFile<ELFT>::initializeSymbols()`, for a defined symbol relative to
a discarded section (due to section group rules), it may have been
inserted as a lazy symbol. We need to demote it to an Undefined to
enable the `discarded section` error happened in a later pass.

Add `LazyObjFile::fetched` (if true) and `ArchiveFile::parsed` (if
false) to represent that there is an ongoing lazy symbol fetch and we
should replace the current lazy symbol with an Undefined, instead of
calling `Symbol::resolve` (`Symbol::resolve` should be called if the lazy
symbol was added by an unrelated archive/lazy object).

As a side result, one small issue in start-lib-comdat.s is now fixed.
The hack motivating D51892 will be unsupported: if
`.gnu.linkonce.t.__i686.get_pc_thunk.bx` in an archive is referenced
by another section, this will likely be errored unless the function is
also defined in a regular object file.
(Bringing back rL330869 would error `undefined symbol` instead of the
more relevant `discarded section`.)

Note, glibc i386's crti.o still works (PR31215), because
`.gnu.linkonce.t.__x86.get_pc_thunk.bx` is in crti.o (one of the first
regular object files in a linker command line).

Fangrui Song e32f04cdc9 [ELF] Parse SHT_GNU_verneed and respect versioned undefined symbols in shared objects
An undefined symbol in a shared object can be versioned, like `f@v1`.
We currently insert `f` as an Undefined into the symbol table, but we
should insert `f@v1` instead.

The string `v1` is inferred from SHT_GNU_versym and SHT_GNU_verneed.
This patch implements the functionality.

Failing to do this can cause two issues:

* If a versioned symbol referenced by a shared object is defined in the
  executable, we will fail to export it.
* If a versioned symbol referenced by a shared object in another object
  file, --no-allow-shlib-undefined may spuriously report an
  "undefined reference to " error. See https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44842

Fangrui Song b912b887d8 [ELF] Add --print-archive-stats=
gold has an option --print-symbol-counts= which prints:

  // For each archive
  archive $archive $members $fetched_members
  // For each object file
  symbols $object $defined_symbols $used_defined_symbols

In most cases, `$defined_symbols = $used_defined_symbols` unless weak
symbols are present. Strangely `$used_defined_symbols` includes symbols defined relative to --gc-sections discarded sections.
The `symbols` lines do not appear to be useful.

`archive` lines are useful: `$fetched_members=0` lines correspond to
unused archives. The information can be used to trim dependencies.

This patch implements --print-archive-stats= which prints the number of
members and the number of fetched members for each archive.

Rui Ueyama 3837f4273f [Coding style change] Rename variables so that they start with a lowercase letter
This patch is mechanically generated by clang-llvm-rename tool that I wrote
using Clang Refactoring Engine just for creating this patch. You can see the
source code of the tool at https://reviews.llvm.org/D64123. There's no manual
post-processing; you can generate the same patch by re-running the tool against
lld's code base.

Here is the main discussion thread to change the LLVM coding style:
https://lists.llvm.org/pipermail/llvm-dev/2019-February/130083.html
In the discussion thread, I proposed we use lld as a testbed for variable
naming scheme change, and this patch does that.

I chose to rename variables so that they are in camelCase, just because that
is a minimal change to make variables to start with a lowercase letter.

Note to downstream patch maintainers: if you are maintaining a downstream lld
repo, just rebasing ahead of this commit would cause massive merge conflicts
because this patch essentially changes every line in the lld subdirectory. But
there's a remedy.

clang-llvm-rename tool is a batch tool, so you can rename variables in your
downstream repo with the tool. Given that, here is how to rebase your repo to
a commit after the mass renaming:

1. rebase to the commit just before the mass variable renaming,
2. apply the tool to your downstream repo to mass-rename variables locally, and
3. rebase again to the head.

Most changes made by the tool should be identical for a downstream repo and
for the head, so at the step 3, almost all changes should be merged and
disappear. I'd expect that there would be some lines that you need to merge by
hand, but that shouldn't be too many.

Fangrui Song 82442adfc0 [PPC32] Improve the 32-bit PowerPC port
Many -static/-no-pie/-shared/-pie applications linked against glibc or musl
should work with this patch. This also helps FreeBSD PowerPC64 to migrate
their lib32 (PR40888).

* Fix default image base and max page size.
* Support new-style Secure PLT (see below). Old-style BSS PLT is not
  implemented, so it is not suitable for FreeBSD rtld now because it doesn't
  support Secure PLT yet.
* Support more initial relocation types:
  R_PPC_ADDR32, R_PPC_REL16*, R_PPC_LOCAL24PC, R_PPC_PLTREL24, and R_PPC_GOT16.
  The addend of R_PPC_PLTREL24 is special: it decides the call stub PLT type
  but it should be ignored for the computation of target symbol VA.
* Support GNU ifunc
* Support .glink used for lazy PLT resolution in glibc
* Add a new thunk type: PPC32PltCallStub that is similar to PPC64PltCallStub.
  It is used by R_PPC_REL24 and R_PPC_PLTREL24.

A PLT stub used in -fPIE/-fPIC usually loads an address relative to
.got2+0x8000 (-fpie/-fpic code uses _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_ relative
addresses).
Two .got2 sections in two object files have different addresses, thus a PLT stub
can't be shared by two object files. To handle this incompatibility,
change the parameters of Thunk::isCompatibleWith to
`const InputSection &, const Relocation &`.

PowerPC psABI specified an old-style .plt (BSS PLT) that is both
writable and executable. Linkers don't make separate RW- and RWE segments,
which causes all initially writable memory (think .data) executable.
This is a big security concern so a new PLT scheme (secure PLT) was developed to
address the security issue.

TLS will be implemented in D62940.

glibc older than ~2012 requires .rela.dyn to include .rela.plt, it can
not handle the DT_RELA+DT_RELASZ == DT_JMPREL case correctly. A hack
(not included in this patch) in LinkerScript.cpp addOrphanSections() to
work around the issue:

    if (Config->EMachine == EM_PPC) {
      // Older glibc assumes .rela.dyn includes .rela.plt
      Add(In.RelaDyn);
      if (In.RelaPlt->isLive() && !In.RelaPlt->Parent)

Rui Ueyama 4254840313 Speed up --start-lib and --end-lib.
--{start,end}-lib give files grouped by the options the archive file
semantics. That is, each object file between them acts as if it were
in an archive file whose sole member is the file.

Therefore, files between --{start,end}-lib are linked to the final
output only if they are needed to resolve some undefined symbols.

Previously, the feature was implemented this way:

 1. We read a symbol table and insert defined symbols to the symbol
    table as lazy symbols.

 2. If an undefind symbol is resolved to a lazy symbol, that lazy
    symbol instantiate ObjFile class for that symbol, which re-insert
    all defined symbols to the symbol table.

So, if an ObjFile is instantiated, defined symbols are inserted to the
symbol table twice. Since inserting long symbol names is not cheap,
there's a room to optimize here.

This patch optimzies it. Now, LazyObjFile remembers symbol handles and
passed them over to a new ObjFile instance, so that the ObjFile
doesn't insert the same strings.

Here is a quick benchmark to link clang. "Original" is the original
lld with unmodified command line options. For "Case 1" and "Case 2", I
extracted all files from archive files and replace .a's in a command
line with .o's wrapped with --{start,end}-lib. I used the original lld
for Case 1" and use this patch for Case 2.

  Original: 5.892
    Case 1: 6.001 (+1.8%)
    Case 2: 5.701 (-3.2%)

So, interestingly, --{start,end}-lib are now faster than the regular
linking scheme with archive files. That's perhaps not too surprising,
though, because for regular archive files, we look up the symbol table
with the same string twice.

Rui Ueyama 3a8bb7cd2c Discard debuginfo for object files empty after GC
Patch by Robert O'Callahan.

Rust projects tend to link in all object files from all dependent
libraries and rely on --gc-sections to strip unused code and data.
Unfortunately --gc-sections doesn't currently strip any debuginfo
associated with GC'ed sections, so lld links in the full debuginfo from
all dependencies even if almost all that code has been discarded. See
https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/56068 for some details.

Properly stripping debuginfo for discarded sections would be difficult,
but a simple approach that helps significantly is to mark debuginfo
sections as live only if their associated object file has at least one
live code/data section. This patch does that. In a (contrived but not
totally artificial) Rust testcase linked above, it reduces the final
binary size from 46MB to 5.1MB.

For lld we don't need to bother tracking which objects have got based small

Summary:
In ld.bfd/gold, --no-allow-shlib-undefined is the default when linking

symbols in a shared object, if all of its DT_NEEDED entries are seen.

Our approach resembles the one used in gold, achieves a good balance to
be useful but not too smart (ld.bfd traces all DSOs and emulates the
behavior of a dynamic linker to catch more cases).

The error is issued based on the symbol table, different from undefined
reference errors issued for relocations. It is most effective when there
are DSOs that were not linked with -z defs (e.g. when static sanitizers
runtime is used).

gold has a comment that some system libraries on GNU/Linux may have
spurious undefined references and thus system libraries should be
excluded (https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=6811). The
story may have changed now but we make --allow-shlib-undefined the
default for now. Its interaction with -shared can be discussed in the
future.

Original commit message:
Small code model global variable access on PPC64 has a very limited range of
addressing. The instructions the relocations are used on add an offset in the
range [-0x8000, 0x7FFC] to the toc pointer which points to .got +0x8000, giving
an addressable range of [.got, .got + 0xFFFC]. While user code can be recompiled
with medium and large code models when the binary grows too large for small code
model, there are small code model relocations in the crt files and libgcc.a
which are typically shipped with the distros, and the ABI dictates that linkers
must allow linking of relocatable object files using different code models.

To minimze the chance of relocation overflow, any file that contains a small
code model relocation should have its .toc section placed closer to the .got
then any .toc from a file without small code model relocations.

which are typically shipped with the distros, and the ABI dictates that linkers
must allow linking of relocatable object files using different code models.

To minimze the chance of relocation overflow, any file that contains a small
code model relocation should have its .toc section placed closer to the .got
then any .toc from a file without small code model relocations.

Chandler Carruth 2946cd7010 Update the file headers across all of the LLVM projects in the monorepo
to reflect the new license.

We understand that people may be surprised that we're moving the header
entirely to discuss the new license. We checked this carefully with the
Foundation's lawyer and we believe this is the correct approach.

Essentially, all code in the project is now made available by the LLVM
project under our new license, so you will see that the license headers
include that license only. Some of our contributors have contributed
code under our old license, and accordingly, we have retained a copy of
our old license notice in the top-level files in each project and
repository.

Rui Ueyama 07b4536bb7 Change how we handle -wrap.
We have an issue with -wrap that the option doesn't work well when
renamed symbols get PLT entries. I'll explain what is the issue and
how this patch solves it.

For one -wrap option, we have three symbols: foo, wrap_foo and real_foo.
Currently, we use memcpy to overwrite wrapped symbols so that they get
the same contents. This works in most cases but doesn't when the relocation
processor sets some flags in the symbol. memcpy'ed symbols are just
aliases, so they always have to have the same contents, but the
relocation processor breaks that assumption.

r336609 is an attempt to fix the issue by memcpy'ing again after
processing relocations, so that symbols that are out of sync get the
same contents again. That works in most cases as well, but it breaks
ASan build in a mysterious way.

We could probably fix the issue by choosing symbol attributes that need
to be copied after they are updated. But it feels too complicated to me.

So, in this patch, I fixed it once and for all. With this patch, we no
longer memcpy symbols. All references to renamed symbols point to new
symbols after wrapSymbols() is done.

George Rimar e2684662ee [LLD][ELF] - Check the architecture of lazy objects earlier.
Our code in LazyObjFile::parse() has an ELFT switch and
adds a lazy object by its ELFT kind.
Though it might be possible to add a file using a different
architecture and make LLD to silently accept it (if the file
is empty or contains only week symbols). That itself, not a
huge issue perhaps (because the error would be reported later
if the file is fetched), but still does not look clean and correct.

It is possible to report an error earlier and clean up the
code. That is what the patch does.

Ideally, we might want to reuse isCompatible from SymbolTable.cpp,
but it is static and accepts a file as an argument, what is not
convenient. Since such a situation should be rare, I think it
should be OK to go with the way chosen in this patch.

Simon Atanasyan ed9ee69ccf [ELF][MIPS] Multi-GOT implementation
Almost all entries inside MIPS GOT are referenced by signed 16-bit
index. Zero entry lies approximately in the middle of the GOT. So the
total number of GOT entries cannot exceed ~16384 for 32-bit architecture
and ~8192 for 64-bit architecture. This limitation makes impossible to
link rather large application like for example LLVM+Clang. There are two
workaround for this problem. The first one is using the -mxgot
compiler's flag. It enables using a 32-bit index to access GOT entries.
But each access requires two assembly instructions two load GOT entry
index to a register. Another workaround is multi-GOT. This patch
implements it.

Here is a brief description of multi-GOT for detailed one see the
following link https://dmz-portal.mips.com/wiki/MIPS_Multi_GOT.

If the sum of local, global and tls entries is less than 64K only single
got is enough. Otherwise, multi-got is created. Series of primary and
multiple secondary GOTs have the following layout:
```
- Primary GOT
    Header
    Local entries
    Global entries
    Relocation only entries
    TLS entries
- Secondary GOT
    Local entries
    Global entries
    TLS entries
...
```

All GOT entries required by relocations from a single input file
entirely belong to either primary or one of secondary GOTs. To reference
GOT entries each GOT has its own _gp value points to the "middle" of the
GOT. In the code this value loaded to the register which is used for GOT
access.

MIPS 32 function's prologue:
```
lui     v0,0x0
0: R_MIPS_HI16  _gp_disp
addiu   v0,v0,0
4: R_MIPS_LO16  _gp_disp
```

MIPS 64 function's prologue:
```
lui     at,0x0
14: R_MIPS_GPREL16  main
```

Dynamic linker does not know anything about secondary GOTs and cannot
use a regular MIPS mechanism for GOT entries initialization. So we have
to use an approach accepted by other architectures and create dynamic
relocations R_MIPS_REL32 to initialize global entries (and local in case
of PIC code) in secondary GOTs. But ironically MIPS dynamic linker
requires GOT entries and correspondingly ordered dynamic symbol table
entries to deal with dynamic relocations. To handle this problem
relocation-only section in the primary GOT contains entries for all
symbols referenced in global parts of secondary GOTs. Although the sum
of local and normal global entries of the primary got should be less
than 64K, the size of the primary got (including relocation-only entries
can be greater than 64K, because parts of the primary got that overflow
the 64K limit are used only by the dynamic linker at dynamic link-time
and not by 16-bit gp-relative addressing at run-time.

The patch affects common LLD code in the following places:

- Added new hidden -mips-got-size flag. This flag required to set low
maximum size of a single GOT to be able to test the implementation using
small test cases.

- Added InputFile argument to the getRelocTargetVA function. The same
symbol referenced by GOT relocation from different input file might be
allocated in different GOT. So result of relocation depends on the file.

- Added new ctor to the DynamicReloc class. This constructor records
settings of dynamic relocation which used to adjust address of 64kb page
lies inside a specific output section.

With the patch LLD is able to link all LLVM+Clang+LLD applications and
libraries for MIPS 32/64 targets.
