Jonathan Roelofs 49e46ce8e2 Fix a bunch of trivial cases of 'CHECK[^:]*$' in the tests. NFCI
I looked into adding a warning / error for this to FileCheck, but there doesn't
seem to be a good way to avoid it triggering on the instances of it in RUN lines.

Bjarke Hammersholt Roune 5cbc7d2999 [NVPTX] Use LDG for pointer induction variables.
More specifically, make NVPTXISelDAGToDAG able to emit cached loads (LDG) for pointer induction variables.

Also fix latent bug where LDG was not restricted to kernel functions. I believe that this could not be triggered so far since we do not currently infer that a pointer is global outside a kernel function, and only loads of global pointers are considered for cached loads.

Jingyue Wu cf70053b20 [NVPTX] convert pointers in byval kernel arguments to global
Summary:
For example, in

Jingyue Wu 48a9bdc6aa [NVPTX] make load on global readonly memory to use ldg
Summary:
[NVPTX] make load on global readonly memory to use ldg

Summary:
As describe in [1], ld.global.nc may be used to load memory by nvcc when
__restrict__ is used and compiler can detect whether read-only data cache
is safe to use.

This patch will try to check whether ldg is safe to use and use them to
replace ld.global when possible. This change can improve the performance
by 18~29% on affected kernels (ratt*_kernel and rwdot*_kernel) in
S3D benchmark of shoc [2].

Jingyue Wu a0a56601c0 [NVPTX] expand extload/truncstore for vectors of floats
Summary:
According to PTX ISA:

For convenience, ld, st, and cvt instructions permit source and destination data operands to be wider than the instruction-type size, so that narrow values may be loaded, stored, and converted using regular-width registers. For example, 8-bit or 16-bit values may be held directly in 32-bit or 64-bit registers when being loaded, stored, or converted to other types and sizes. The operand type checking rules are relaxed for bit-size and integer (signed and unsigned) instruction types; floating-point instruction types still require that the operand type-size matches exactly, unless the operand is of bit-size type.

So, the ISA does not support load with extending/store with truncatation for floating numbers. This is reflected in setting the loadext/truncstore actions to expand in the code for floating numbers, but vectors of floating numbers are not taken care of.

As a result, loading a vector of floats followed by a fp_extend may be combined by DAGCombiner to a extload, and the extload may be lowered to NVPTXISD::LoadV2 with extending information. However, NVPTXISD::LoadV2 does not perform extending, and no extending instructions are inserted. Finally, PTX instructions with mismatched types are generated, like
ld.v2.f32 {%fd3, %fd4}, [%rd2]

This patch adds the correct actions for vectors of floats, so DAGCombiner would not create loads with extending, and correct code is generated.

Summary:

David Blaikie 23af64846f [opaque pointer type] Add textual IR support for explicit type parameter to the call instruction
See r230786 and r230794 for similar changes to gep and load
respectively.

Call is a bit different because it often doesn't have a single explicit
type - usually the type is deduced from the arguments, and just the
return type is explicit. In those cases there's no need to change the
IR.

When that's not the case, the IR usually contains the pointer type of
the first operand - but since typed pointers are going away, that
representation is insufficient so I'm just stripping the "pointerness"
of the explicit type away.

This does make the IR a bit weird - it /sort of/ reads like the type of
the first operand: "call void () %x(" but %x is actually of type "void
()*" and will eventually be just of type "ptr". But this seems not too
bad and I don't think it would benefit from repeating the type
("void (), void () * %x(" and then eventually "void (), ptr %x(") as has
been done with gep and load.

This also has a side benefit: since the explicit type is no longer a
pointer, there's no ambiguity between an explicit type and a function
that returns a function pointer. Previously this case needed an explicit
type (eg: a function returning a void() function was written as
"call void () () * @x(" rather than "call void () * @x(" because of the
ambiguity between a function returning a pointer to a void() function
and a function returning void).

No ambiguity means even function pointer return types can just be
written alone, without writing the whole function's type.

This leaves /only/ the varargs case where the explicit type is required.

Given the special type syntax in call instructions, the regex-fu used
for migration was a bit more involved in its own unique way (as every
one of these is) so here it is. Use it in conjunction with the apply.sh
script and associated find/xargs commands I've provided in rr230786 to
migrate your out of tree tests. Do let me know if any of this doesn't
cover your cases & we can iterate on a more general script/regexes to
help others with out of tree tests.

About 9 test cases couldn't be automatically migrated - half of those
were functions returning function pointers, where I just had to manually
delete the function argument types now that we didn't need an explicit
function type there. The other half were typedefs of function types used
in calls - just had to manually drop the * from those.

David Blaikie 79e6c74981 [opaque pointer type] Add textual IR support for explicit type parameter to getelementptr instruction
One of several parallel first steps to remove the target type of pointers,
replacing them with a single opaque pointer type.

This adds an explicit type parameter to the gep instruction so that when the
first parameter becomes an opaque pointer type, the type to gep through is
still available to the instructions.

* This doesn't modify gep operators, only instructions (operators will be
  handled separately)

* Textual IR changes only. Bitcode (including upgrade) and changing the
  in-memory representation will be in separate changes.

* geps of vectors are transformed as:
    getelementptr <4 x float*> %x, ...
  ->getelementptr float, <4 x float*> %x, ...
  Then, once the opaque pointer type is introduced, this will ultimately look
  like:
    getelementptr float, <4 x ptr> %x
  with the unambiguous interpretation that it is a vector of pointers to float.

* address spaces remain on the pointer, not the type:
    getelementptr float addrspace(1)* %x
  ->getelementptr float, float addrspace(1)* %x
  Then, eventually:
    getelementptr float, ptr addrspace(1) %x

Importantly, the massive amount of test case churn has been automated by
same crappy python code. I had to manually update a few test cases that
wouldn't fit the script's model (r228970,r229196,r229197,r229198). The
python script just massages stdin and writes the result to stdout, I
then wrapped that in a shell script to handle replacing files, then
using the usual find+xargs to migrate all the files.

update.py:
import fileinput
import sys
import re

ibrep = re.compile(r"(^.*?[^%\w]getelementptr inbounds )(((?:<\d* x )?)(.*?)(| addrspace\(\d\)) *\*(|>)(?:$| *(?:%|@|null|undef|blockaddress|getelementptr|addrspacecast|bitcast|inttoptr|\[\[[a-zA-Z]|\{\{).*$))")
normrep = re.compile(       r"(^.*?[^%\w]getelementptr )(((?:<\d* x )?)(.*?)(| addrspace\(\d\)) *\*(|>)(?:$| *(?:%|@|null|undef|blockaddress|getelementptr|addrspacecast|bitcast|inttoptr|\[\[[a-zA-Z]|\{\{).*$))")

  elif line.find("getelementptr ") != line.find("getelementptr ("):
    line = conv(re.match(normrep, line), line)
  sys.stdout.write(line)

apply.sh:
for name in "$@"
do
  python3 `dirname "$0"`/update.py < "$name" > "$name.tmp" && mv "$name.tmp" "$name"
  rm -f "$name.tmp"
done

The actual commands:
From llvm/src:
find test/ -name *.ll | xargs ./apply.sh
From llvm/src/tools/clang:
find test/ -name *.mm -o -name *.m -o -name *.cpp -o -name *.c | xargs -I '{}' ../../apply.sh "{}"
From llvm/src/tools/polly:
find test/ -name *.ll | xargs ./apply.sh

After that, check-all (with llvm, clang, clang-tools-extra, lld,
compiler-rt, and polly all checked out).

The extra 'rm' in the apply.sh script is due to a few files in clang's test
suite using interesting unicode stuff that my python script was throwing
exceptions on. None of those files needed to be migrated, so it seemed
sufficient to ignore those cases.

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith be7ea19b58 IR: Make metadata typeless in assembly
Now that `Metadata` is typeless, reflect that in the assembly. These
are the matching assembly changes for the metadata/value split in
r223802.

  - Only use the `metadata` type when referencing metadata from a call
    intrinsic -- i.e., only when it's used as a `Value`.

  - Stop pretending that `ValueAsMetadata` is wrapped in an `MDNode`
    when referencing it from call intrinsics.

So, assembly like this:

    define @foo(i32 %v) {
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{i32 %v}, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{i32 7}, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata !1, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata !3, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{metadata !3}, metadata !0)
      ret void, !bar !2
    }
    !0 = metadata !{metadata !2}
    !1 = metadata !{i32* @global}
    !2 = metadata !{metadata !3}
    !3 = metadata !{}

turns into this:

    define @foo(i32 %v) {
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata i32 %v, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata i32 7, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata i32* @global, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata !3, metadata !0)
      call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{!3}, metadata !0)
      ret void, !bar !2
    }
    !0 = !{!2}
    !1 = !{i32* @global}
    !2 = !{!3}
    !3 = !{}

I wrote an upgrade script that handled almost all of the tests in llvm
and many of the tests in cfe (even handling many `CHECK` lines). I've

Justin Holewinski 3d140fcfd1 [NVPTX] Add NVPTXLowerStructArgs pass
This works around the limitation that PTX does not allow .param space
loads/stores with arbitrary pointers.

If a function has a by-val struct ptr arg, say foo(%struct.x *byval %d), then
add the following instructions to the first basic block :

%temp = alloca %struct.x, align 8
%tt1 = bitcast %struct.x * %d to i8 *
%tt2 = llvm.nvvm.cvt.gen.to.param %tt2
%tempd = bitcast i8 addrspace(101) * to %struct.x addrspace(101) *
%tv = load %struct.x addrspace(101) * %tempd
store %struct.x %tv, %struct.x * %temp, align 8

The above code allocates some space in the stack and copies the incoming
struct from param space to local space. Then replace all occurences of %d
by %temp.

Summary:
Fixes a FIXME in MachineSinking. Instead of using the simple heuristics in
isPostDominatedBy, use the real MachinePostDominatorTree and MachineLoopInfo.
The old heuristics caused instructions to sink unnecessarily, and might create
register pressure.

This is the second try of the fix. The first one (D4814) caused a performance
regression due to failing to sink instructions out of loops (PR21115). This
patch fixes PR21115 by sinking an instruction from a deeper loop to a shallower
one regardless of whether the target block post-dominates the source.

Thanks Alexey Volkov for reporting PR21115!

Test Plan:
Added a NVPTX codegen test to verify that our change prevents the backend from
over-sinking. It also shows the unnecessary register pressure caused by
over-sinking.

Added an X86 test to verify we can sink instructions out of loops regardless of
the dominance relationship. This test is reduced from Alexey's test in PR21115.

Updated an affected test in X86.

Also ran SPEC CINT2006 and llvm-test-suite for compilation time and runtime
performance. Results are attached separately in the review thread.

* It is a property of how it is accessed, not of the data itself.
* It is perfectly possible to write code that depends on the address
of an alias.

This patch then makes unname_addr legal for aliases. One side effect is that
the syntax changes for a corner case: In globals, unnamed_addr is now printed
before the address space.

Justin Holewinski 30d56a7b86 [NVPTX] Add preliminary intrinsics and codegen support for textures/surfaces
This commit adds intrinsics and codegen support for the surface read/write and texture read instructions that take an explicit sampler parameter. Codegen operates on image handles at the PTX level, but falls back to direct replacement of handles with kernel arguments if image handles are not enabled. Note that image handles are explicitly disabled for all target architectures in this change (to be enabled later).

Eli Bendersky 2281ef91e6 Expose "noduplicate" attribute as a property for intrinsics.
The "noduplicate" function attribute exists to prevent certain optimizations
from duplicating calls to the function. This is important on platforms where
certain function call duplications are unsafe (for example execution barriers
for CUDA and OpenCL).

This patch makes it possible to specify intrinsics as "noduplicate" and
translates that to the appropriate function attribute.

Rafael Espindola 2fb5bc33a3 Remove the linker_private and linker_private_weak linkages.
These linkages were introduced some time ago, but it was never very
clear what exactly their semantics were or what they should be used
for. Some investigation found these uses:

* utf-16 strings in clang.
* non-unnamed_addr strings produced by the sanitizers.

It turns out they were just working around a more fundamental problem.
For some sections a MachO linker needs a symbol in order to split the
section into atoms, and llvm had no idea that was the case. I fixed
that in r201700 and it is now safe to use the private linkage. When
the object ends up in a section that requires symbols, llvm will use a
'l' prefix instead of a 'L' prefix and things just work.

With that, these linkages were already dead, but there was a potential
future user in the objc metadata information. I am still looking at
CGObjcMac.cpp, but at this point I am convinced that linker_private
and linker_private_weak are not what they need.

The objc uses are currently split in

* Regular symbols (no '\01' prefix). LLVM already directly provides
whatever semantics they need.
* Uses of a private name (start with "\01L" or "\01l") and private
linkage. We can drop the "\01L" and "\01l" prefixes as soon as llvm
agrees with clang on L being ok or not for a given section. I have two
patches in code review for this.
* Uses of private name and weak linkage.

The last case is the one that one could think would fit one of these
linkages. That is not the case. The semantics are

* the linker will merge these symbol by *name*.
* the linker will hide them in the final DSO.

Given that the merging is done by name, any of the private (or
internal) linkages would be a bad match. They allow llvm to rename the
symbols, and that is really not what we want. From the llvm point of
view, these objects should really be (linkonce|weak)(_odr)?.

For now, just keeping the "\01l" prefix is probably the best for these
symbols. If we one day want to have a more direct support in llvm,
IMHO what we should add is not a linkage, it is just a hidden_symbol
attribute. It would be applicable to multiple linkages. For example,
on weak it would produce the current behavior we have for objc
metadata. On internal, it would be equivalent to private (and we
should then remove private).

This converter currently only handles global variables in address space 0. For
these variables, they are promoted to address space 1 (global memory), and all

variable.

The motivation for this is address space 0 global variables are illegal since we
cannot declare variables in the generic address space. Instead, we place the
variables in address space 1 and explicitly convert the pointer to address
space 0. This is primarily intended to help new users who expect to be able to
place global variables in the default address space.
