Sam McCall a2b048bc4b [clangd] Respect task cancellation in TUScheduler.
Summary:
- Reads are never executed if canceled before ready-to run.
  In practice, we finalize cancelled reads eagerly and out-of-order.
- Cancelled reads don't prevent prior updates from being elided, as they don't
  actually depend on the result of the update.
- Updates are downgraded from WantDiagnostics::Yes to WantDiagnostics::Auto when
  cancelled, which allows them to be elided when all dependent reads are
  cancelled and there are subsequent writes. (e.g. when the queue is backed up
  with cancelled requests).

The queue operations aren't optimal (we scan the whole queue for cancelled
tasks every time the scheduler runs, and check cancellation twice in the end).
However I believe these costs are still trivial in practice (compared to any
AST operation) and the logic can be cleanly separated from the rest of the
scheduler.

Sam McCall 991e316126 [clangd] Replay preamble #includes to clang-tidy checks.
Summary:
This is needed to correctly handle checks that use IncludeInserter,
which is very common.

I couldn't find a totally safe example of a check to enable for testing,
I picked modernize-deprecated-headers which some will probably hate.
We should get configuration working...

This depends on D54691 which ensures our calls to getFile(open=false)
don't break subsequent accesses via the FileManager.

Summary:
Currently, changes *within* CDBs are not tracked (CDB has no facility to do so).
However, discovery of new CDBs are tracked (all files are marked as modified).
Also, files whose compilation commands are explicitly set are marked modified.

The intent is to use this for auto-index. Newly discovered files will be indexed
with low priority.

Sam McCall 98ae975187 [clangd] Initial clang-tidy diagnostics support.
Summary:
This runs checks over a restricted subset of the TU:
 - preprocessor callbacks just receive the truncated PP events that
   occur when a preamble is used.
 - ASTMatchers run only over the top-level decls in the main-file

This patch just turns on one simple check (bugprone-sizeof-expression)
with no configuration. Configuration is complex enough to warrant a separate patch

This depends on a patch allowing traversal to be restricted to a scope.

Scott Linder c0830f5577 [Support] Teach YAMLIO about polymorphic types
Add support for "polymorphic" types to YAMLIO.

PolymorphicTraits can dynamically switch between other traits (Scalar, Map, or
Sequence). When inputting, the PolymorphicTraits type is told which type to
become, and when outputting the PolymorphicTraits type is asked which type it
currently is.

Also add support for TaggedScalarTraits to allow dynamically differentiating
between multiple scalar types using YAML tags.

Serialize empty maps as "{}" and empty sequences as "[]", so that types
are preserved when round-tripping PolymorphicTraits. This change has
equivalent semantics, but may break e.g. tests which compare output
verbatim.

Sam McCall 72ccf00b17 [clangd] Make TestTU build with preamble, and fix the fallout.
Our testing didn't reflect reality: live clangd almost always uses a
preamble, and sometimes the preamble behaves differently.
This patch fixes a common test helper to be more realistic.

Preamble doesn't preserve information about which tokens come from the
command-line (this gets inlined into a source file). So remove logic
that attempts to treat symbols with such names differently.

A SymbolCollectorTest tries to verify that locals in headers are not
indexed, with preamble enabled this is only meaningful for locals of
auto-typed functions (otherwise the bodies aren't parsed).

Tests were relying on the fact that the findAnyDecl helper actually did expose
symbols from headers. Resolve by making all these functions consistently
able to find symbols in headers/preambles.

Sam McCall 3c1f4903b7 [clang-tidy] Untangle layering in ClangTidyDiagnosticConsumer somewhat. NFC
Summary:
Clang's hierarchy is CompilerInstance -> DiagnosticsEngine -> DiagnosticConsumer.
(Ownership is optional/shared, but this structure is fairly clear).

Currently ClangTidyDiagnosticConsumer *owns* the DiagnosticsEngine:
 - this inverts the hierarchy, which is confusing
 - this means ClangTidyDiagnosticConsumer() mutates the passed-in context, which
   is both surprising and limits flexibility
 - it's not possible to use a different DiagnosticsEngine with ClangTidy

This means a little bit more code in the places ClangTidy is used standalone,
but more flexibility in using ClangTidy with other diagnostics configurations.

Sam McCall cb50e23ba8 [clang-tidy] Get ClangTidyContext out of the business of storing diagnostics. NFC
Summary:
Currently ClangTidyContext::diag() sends the diagnostics to a
DiagnosticsEngine, which probably delegates to a ClangTidyDiagnosticsConsumer,
which is supposed to go back and populate ClangTidyContext::Errors.

After this patch, the diagnostics are stored in the ClangTidyDiagnosticsConsumer
itself and can be retrieved from there.

Why?
 - the round-trip from context -> engine -> consumer -> context is confusing
   and makes it harder to establish layering between these things.
 - context does too many things, and makes it hard to use clang-tidy as a library
 - everyone who actually wants the diagnostics has access to the ClangTidyDiagnosticsConsumer

The most natural implementation (ClangTidyDiagnosticsConsumer::take()
finalizes diagnostics) causes a test failure: clang-tidy-run-with-database.cpp
asserts that clang-tidy exits successfully when trying to process a file
that doesn't exist.
In clang-tidy today, this happens because finish() is never called, so the
diagnostic is never flushed. This looks like a bug to me.
For now, this patch carefully preserves that behavior, but I'll ping the
authors to see whether it's deliberate and worth preserving.

I kept the error (instead of downgrading to a log message) since the range lengths differing does indicate either a bug in the client or server range calculation or the buffers being out of sync (which both seems serious enough to me to be an error). If any existing clients aside from VSCode break they should only break when accidentally typing a Unicode character which should only be a minor nuisance for a little while until the bug is fixed in the respective client.

Sam McCall c008af6466 [clangd] Namespace style cleanup in cpp files. NFC.
Standardize on the most common namespace setup in our *.cpp files:
  using namespace llvm;
  namespace clang {
  namespace clangd {
  void foo(StringRef) { ... }
And remove redundant llvm:: qualifiers. (Except for cases like
make_unique where this causes problems with std:: and ADL).

This choice is pretty arbitrary, but some broad consistency is nice.
This is going to conflict with everything. Sorry :-/

Squash the other configurations:

A)
  using namespace llvm;
  using namespace clang;
  using namespace clangd;
  void clangd::foo(StringRef);
This is in some of the older files. (It prevents accidentally defining a
new function instead of one in the header file, for what that's worth).

B)
  namespace clang {
  namespace clangd {
  void foo(llvm::StringRef) { ... }
This is fine, but in practice the using directive often gets added over time.

C)
  namespace clang {
  namespace clangd {
  using namespace llvm; // inside the namespace
This was pretty common, but is a bit misleading: name lookup preferrs
clang::clangd::foo > clang::foo > llvm:: foo (no matter where the using
directive is).

Summary:
This paves the way for alternative transports (mac XPC, maybe messagepack?),

a pipe dream, we split up the JSONOutput monolith, etc.

This isn't a final state, much of what remains in JSONRPCDispatcher can go away,
handlers can call reply() on the transport directly, JSONOutput can be renamed

The main observable change (see tests) is that hitting EOF on input is now an
error: the client should send the 'exit' notification.
This is defensible: the protocol doesn't spell this case out. Reproducing the
current behavior for all combinations of shutdown/exit/EOF clutters interfaces.

Summary:
See tinyurl.com/clangd-automatic-index for design and goals.

Lots of limitations to keep this patch smallish, TODOs everywhere:
 - no serialization to disk
 - no changes to dynamic index, which now has a much simpler job
 - no partitioning of symbols by file to avoid duplication of header symbols
 - no reindexing of edited files
 - only a single worker thread
 - compilation database is slurped synchronously (doesn't scale)
 - uses memindex, rebuilds after every file (should be dex, periodically)

It's not hooked up to ClangdServer/ClangdLSPServer yet: the layering
isn't clear (it should really be in ClangdServer, but ClangdLSPServer
has all the CDB interactions).

Sam McCall 50b89f0a9b [clangd] Simplify Dex query tree logic and fix missing-posting-list bug
Summary:
The bug being fixed: when a posting list doesn't exist in the index, it
was previously just dropped from the query rather than being treated as
empty. Now that we have the FALSE iterator, we can use it instead.

The query tree logic previously had a bunch of special cases to detect whether
subtrees are empty. Now we just naively build the whole tree, and rely
on the query optimizations to drop the trivial parts.

Finally, there was a bug in trigram generation: the empty query would
generate a single trigram "$$$" instead of no trigrams.
This had no effect (there was no posting list, so the other bug
cancelled it out). But we now have to fix this bug too.

Summary:
The FALSE iterator will be used in a followup patch to fix a logic bug in Dex
(currently, tokens that don't have posting lists in the index are simply dropped
from the query, changing semantics).

It can usually be optimized away, so added the following opmitizations:
 - simplify booleans inside AND/OR
 - replace effectively-empty AND/OR with booleans
 - flatten nested AND/ORs

While working on this, found a bug in the AND iterator: its constructor sync()
assumes that ReachedEnd is set if applicable, but the constructor never sets it.
This crashes if a non-first iterator is nonempty.

Summary:
The file stats can be reused when preamble is reused (e.g. code
completion). It's safe to assume that cached status is not outdated as we
assume preamble files to remain unchanged.

On real file system, this made code completion ~20% faster on a measured file
(with big preamble). The preamble build time doesn't change much.

Sam McCall c8758406b5 [clangd] Simplify cancellation public API
Summary:
Task is no longer exposed:
 - task cancellation is hidden as a std::function
 - task creation returns the new context directly
 - checking is via free function only, with no way to avoid the context lookup
The implementation is essentially the same, but a bit terser as it's hidden.

isCancelled() is now safe to use outside any task (it returns false).
This will leave us free to sprinkle cancellation in e.g. TUScheduler without
needing elaborate test setup, and lets callers that don't cancel "just work".

Updated the docs to describe the new expected use pattern.
One thing I noticed: there's nothing async-specific about the cancellation.
Async tasks can be cancelled from any thread (typically the one that created
them), sync tasks can be cancelled from any *other* thread in the same way.
So the docs now refer to "long-running" tasks instead of async ones.

Updated usage in code complete, without any structural changes.
I didn't update all the names of the helpers in ClangdLSPServer (these will
likely be moved to JSONRPCDispatcher anyway).

Sam McCall 50f3631057 [clangd] Define a compact binary serialization fomat for symbol slab/index.
Summary:
This is intended to replace the current YAML format for general use.
It's ~10x more compact than YAML, and ~40% more compact than gzipped YAML:
  llvmidx.riff = 20M, llvmidx.yaml = 272M, llvmidx.yaml.gz = 32M
It's also simpler/faster to read and write.

The format is a RIFF container (chunks of (type, size, data)) with:
 - a compressed string table
 - simple binary encoding of symbols (with varints for compactness)
It can be extended to include occurrences, Dex posting lists, etc.

There's no rich backwards-compatibility scheme, but a version number is included
so we can detect incompatible files and do ad-hoc back-compat.

Alternatives considered:
 - compressed YAML or JSON: bulky and slow to load
 - llvm bitstream: confusing model and libraries are hard to use. My attempt
   produced slightly larger files, and the code was longer and slower.
 - protobuf or similar: would be really nice (esp for back-compat) but the
   dependency is a big hassle
 - ad-hoc binary format without a container: it seems clear we're going
   to add posting lists and occurrences here, and that they will benefit
   from sharing a string table. The container makes it easy to debug
   these pieces in isolation, and make them optional.

Sam McCall b0138317d6 [clangd] SymbolOccurrences -> Refs and cleanup
Summary:
A few things that I noticed while merging the SwapIndex patch:
 - SymbolOccurrences and particularly SymbolOccurrenceSlab are unwieldy names,
   and these names appear *a lot*. Ref, RefSlab, etc seem clear enough
   and read/format much better.
 - The asymmetry between SymbolSlab and RefSlab (build() vs freeze()) is
   confusing and irritating, and doesn't even save much code.
   Avoiding RefSlab::Builder was my idea, but it was a bad one; add it.
 - DenseMap<SymbolID, ArrayRef<Ref>> seems like a reasonable compromise for
   constructing MemIndex - and means many less wasted allocations than the
   current DenseMap<SymbolID, vector<Ref*>> for FileIndex, and none for
   slabs.
 - RefSlab::find() is not actually used for anything, so we can throw
   away the DenseMap and keep the representation much more compact.
 - A few naming/consistency fixes: e.g. Slabs,Refs -> Symbols,Refs.

  - XRefs cannot be collected at all, since we can only obtain full

Kirill Bobyrev 870aaf2963 [clangd] DexIndex implementation prototype
This patch is a proof-of-concept Dex index implementation. It has
several flaws, which don't allow replacing static MemIndex yet, such as:

* Not being able to handle queries of small size (less than 3 symbols);
  a way to solve this is generating trigrams of smaller size and having
  such incomplete trigrams in the index structure.
* Speed measurements: while manually editing files in Vim and requesting
  autocompletion gives an impression that the performance is at least
  comparable with the current static index, having actual numbers is
  important because we don't want to hurt the users and roll out slow
  code. Eric (@ioeric) suggested that we should only replace MemIndex as
  soon as we have the evidence that this is not a regression in terms of
  performance. An approach which is likely to be successful here is to
  wait until we have benchmark library in the LLVM core repository, which
  is something I have suggested in the LLVM mailing lists, received
  positive feedback on and started working on. I will add a dependency as
  soon as the suggested patch is out for a review (currently there's at
  least one complication which is being addressed by
  https://github.com/google/benchmark/pull/649). Key performance
  improvements for iterators are sorting by cost and the limit iterator.
* Quality measurements: currently, boosting iterator and two-phase
  lookup stage are not implemented, without these the quality is likely to
  be worse than the current implementation can yield. Measuring quality is
  tricky, but another suggestion in the offline discussion was that the
  drop-in replacement should only happen after Boosting iterators
  implementation (and subsequent query enhancement).

The proposed changes do not affect Clangd functionality or performance,
`DexIndex` is only used in unit tests and not in production code.

    ]

In getAbsoluteFilePath, we try to obtain the realpath of the FileEntry
by calling tryGetRealPathName. However, this can fail and return an
empty string. It may be bug a bug in clang, but in any case we should
fall back to computing it ourselves if it happens.

I changed getAbsoluteFilePath so that if tryGetRealPathName succeeds, we
return right away (a real path is always absolute). Otherwise, we try
to build an absolute path, as we did before, but we also call
VFS->getRealPath to make sure to get the canonical path (e.g. without
any ".." in it).

Kirill Bobyrev 0a75766c3d [clangd] Allow consuming limited number of items
This patch modifies `consume` function to allow retrieval of limited
number of symbols. This is the "cheap" implementation of top-level
limiting iterator. In the future we would like to have a complete limit
iterator implementation to insert it into the query subtrees, but in the
meantime this version would be enough for a fully-functional
proof-of-concept Dex implementation.

Kirill Bobyrev bea258d3d7 [clangd] Proof-of-concept query iterators for Dex symbol index
This patch introduces three essential types of query iterators:
`DocumentIterator`, `AndIterator`, `OrIterator`. It provides a
convenient API for query tree generation and serves as a building block
for the next generation symbol index - Dex. Currently, many
optimizations are missed to improve code readability and to serve as the
reference implementation. Potential improvements are briefly mentioned
in `FIXME`s and will be addressed in the following patches.

Kirill Bobyrev 5e82f05e7a [clangd] Introduce Dex symbol index search tokens
This patch introduces the core building block of the next-generation
Clangd symbol index - Dex. Search tokens are the keys in the inverted
index and represent a characteristic of a specific symbol: examples of
search token types (Token Namespaces) are

* Trigrams - these are essential for unqualified symbol name fuzzy
search * Scopes for filtering the symbols by the namespace * Paths, e.g.
these can be used to uprank symbols defined close to the edited file

This patch outlines the generic for such token namespaces, but only
implements trigram generation.

The intuition behind trigram generation algorithm is that each extracted
trigram is a valid sequence for Fuzzy Matcher jumps, proposed
implementation utilize existing FuzzyMatcher API for segmentation and
trigram extraction.

However, trigrams generation algorithm for the query string is different
from the previous one: it simply yields sequences of 3 consecutive
lowercased valid characters (letters, digits).

Dex RFC in the mailing list:
http://lists.llvm.org/pipermail/clangd-dev/2018-July/000022.html

The trigram generation techniques are described in detail in the
proposal:

Having `using qualified::name;` for some symbol is an important signal
for clangd code completion as the user is more likely to use such
symbol. This patch helps to uprank the relevant symbols by saving
UsingShadowDecl in the new field of CodeCompletionResult and checking
whether the corresponding UsingShadowDecl is located in the main file
later in ClangD code completion routine. While the relative importance
of such signal is a subject to change in the future, this patch simply
bumps DeclProximity score to the value of 1.0 which should be enough for
now.

To mitigate this, try to normalize a little bit the paths output by
clang-move to remove that leading "./".

Summary:
This provides more structured information that embedders can use for rendering.
ClangdLSPServer continues to call render(), so NFC.

The patch is:
 - trivial changes to ClangdServer/ClangdLSPServer
 - mostly-mechanical updates to CodeCompleteTests etc for the new API
 - new direct tests of render() in CodeCompleteTests
 - tiny cleanups to CodeCompletionItem (operator<< and missing initializers)

Summary:
(Originally started as a clang-tidy check but there's already D45444 so shifted to just adding ExprMutationAnalyzer)

`ExprMutationAnalyzer` is a generally useful helper that can be used in different clang-tidy checks for checking whether a given expression is (potentially) mutated within a statement (typically the enclosing compound statement.)

This is a more general and more powerful/accurate version of isOnlyUsedAsConst, which is used in ForRangeCopyCheck, UnnecessaryCopyInitialization.

It should also be possible to construct checks like D45444 (suggest adding const to variable declaration) or https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21981 (suggest adding const to member function) using this helper function.

This function is tested by itself and is intended to stay generally useful instead of tied to any particular check.

Summary:
Previously, the strings matched LSP completion pretty closely.
The completion label was a single string, for instance. This made
implementing completion itself easy but makes it hard to use the names
in other way, e.g. pretty-printed name in synthesized

It also limits our introspection into completion items, which can only
be as precise as the indexed symbols. This change is a prerequisite to
improvements to overload bundling which need to inspect e.g. signature
structure.

Summary:
For completion items that would trigger include insertions (i.e. index symbols
that are not #included yet), add a visual indicator "+" before the completion
label. The inserted headers will appear in the completion detail.

Open to suggestions for better visual indicators; "+" was picked because it
seems cleaner than a few other candidates I've tried (*, #, @ ...).

The displayed header would be like a/b/c.h (without quote) or <vector> for system
headers. I didn't add quotation or "#include" because they can take up limited
space and do not provide additional information after users know what the
headers are. I think a header alone should be obvious for users to infer that
this is an include header..

To align indentation, also prepend ' ' to labels of candidates that would not
trigger include insertions (only for completions where index results are
possible).

This happens in the code completion merge step, so there may be inconsistencies

We don't want to bundle together completions that have different side-effects

be immediately obvious. (Also, the implementation seems a little fragile)

Sam McCall 4caa85129f [clangd] Code completion: drop explicit injected names/operators, ignore Sema priority
Summary:
Now we have most of Sema's code completion signals incorporated in Quality,
which will allow us to give consistent ranking to sema/index results.

Therefore we can/should stop using Sema priority as an explicit signal.
This fixes some issues like namespaces always having a terrible score.

The most important missing signals are:
 - Really dumb/rarely useful completions like:
    SomeStruct().^SomeStruct
    SomeStruct().^operator=
    SomeStruct().~SomeStruct()
   We already filter out destructors, this patch adds injected names and
   operators to that list.
 - type matching the expression context.

Ilya Biryukov 6c5e99ed46 [clangd] Build index on preamble changes instead of the AST changes
Summary:
This is more efficient and avoids data races when reading files that
come from the preamble. The staleness can occur when reading a file
from disk that changed after the preamble was built. This can lead to
crashes, e.g. when parsing comments.

We do not to rely on symbols from the main file anyway, since any info
that those provide can always be taken from the AST.

Ilya Biryukov be0eb8f498 [clangd] Serve comments for headers decls from dynamic index only
Summary:
To fix a crash in code completion that occurrs when reading doc
comments from files that were updated after the preamble was
computed. In that case, the files on disk could've been changed and we
can't rely on finding the comment text with the same range anymore.

The current workaround is to not provide comments from the headers at
all and rely on the dynamic index instead.

A more principled solution would be to store contents of the files
read inside the preamble, but it is way harder to implement properly,
given that it would definitely increase the sizes of the preamble.

Together with D47272, this should fix all preamble-related crashes
we're aware of.

Eric Liu 42abe419e2 [clangd] Fix code completion in MACROs with stringification.
Summary:
Currently, we only handle the first callback from sema code completion
and ignore results from potential following callbacks. This causes
causes loss of completion results when multiple contexts are tried by Sema.

For example, we wouldn't get any completion result in the following completion
as the first attemped context is natural language which has no
candidate. The parser would backtrack and tried a completion with AST
semantic, which would find candidate "::x".

```
void f(const char*, int);
#define F(x) f(#x, x)
int x;
void main() {
	F(::^);
}
```

To fix this, we only process a sema callback when it gives completion results or
the context supports index-based completion.

Summary:
Previous implementation used to extract brief text from doxygen comments.
Brief text parsing slows down completion and is not suited for
non-doxygen comments.

This commit switches to providing comments that mimic the ones
originally written in the source code, doing minimal reindenting and
removing the comments markers to make the output more user-friendly.

It means we lose support for doxygen-specific features, e.g. extracting
brief text, but provide useful results for non-doxygen comments.
Switching the doxygen support back is an option, but I suggest to see
whether the current approach gives more useful results.

Sam McCall c5707b6c36 [clangd] Extract scoring/ranking logic, and shave yaks.
Summary:
Code completion scoring was embedded in CodeComplete.cpp, which is bad:
 - awkward to test. The mechanisms (extracting info from index/sema) can be
   unit-tested well, the policy (scoring) should be quantitatively measured.
   Neither was easily possible, and debugging was hard.
   The intermediate signal struct makes this easier.
 - hard to reuse. This is a bug in workspaceSymbols: it just presents the
   results in the index order, which is not sorted in practice, it needs to rank
   them!
   Also, index implementations care about scoring (both query-dependent and
   independent) in order to truncate result lists appropriately.

The main yak shaved here is the build() function that had 3 variants across
unit tests is unified in TestTU.h (rather than adding a 4th variant).

Sam McCall a4962cce49 [clangd] Fix unicode handling, using UTF-16 where LSP requires it.
Summary:
The Language Server Protocol unfortunately mandates that locations in files
be represented by line/column pairs, where the "column" is actually an index
into the UTF-16-encoded text of the line.
(This is because VSCode is written in JavaScript, which is UTF-16-native).

Internally clangd treats source files at UTF-8, the One True Encoding, and
generally deals with byte offsets (though there are exceptions).

Before this patch, conversions between offsets and LSP Position pretended
that Position.character was UTF-8 bytes, which is only true for ASCII lines.
Now we examine the text to convert correctly (but don't actually need to
transcode it, due to some nice details of the encodings).

The updated functions in SourceCode are the blessed way to interact with
the Position.character field, and anything else is likely to be wrong.
So I also updated the other accesses:
 - CodeComplete needs a "clang-style" line/column, with column in utf-8 bytes.
   This is now converted via Position -> offset -> clang line/column
   (a new function is added to SourceCode.h for the second conversion).
 - getBeginningOfIdentifier skipped backwards in UTF-16 space, which is will
   behave badly when it splits a surrogate pair. Skipping backwards in UTF-8
   coordinates gives the lexer a fighting chance of getting this right.
   While here, I clarified(?) the logic comments, fixed a bug with identifiers
   containing digits, simplified the signature slightly and added a test.

This seems likely to cause problems with editors that have the same bug, and
treat the protocol as if columns are UTF-8 bytes. But we can find and fix those.

Marc-Andre Laperle b387b6e6dc [clangd] Implementation of workspace/symbol request
Summary:
This is a basic implementation of the "workspace/symbol" request which is
used to find symbols by a string query. Since this is similar to code completion
in terms of result, this implementation reuses the "fuzzyFind" in order to get
matches. For now, the scoring algorithm is the same as code completion and
improvements could be done in the future.

The index model doesn't contain quite enough symbols for this to cover
common symbols like methods, enum class enumerators, functions in unamed
namespaces, etc. The index model will be augmented separately to achieve this.
