James Y Knight 3602286937 [SPARC] Fix stupid oversight in stack realignment support.
If you're going to realign %sp to get object alignment properly (which
the code does), and stack offsets and alignments are calculated going
down from %fp (which they are), then the total stack size had better
be a multiple of the alignment. LLVM did indeed ensure that.

And then, after aligning, the sparc frame code added 96 (for sparcv8)
to the frame size, making any requested alignment of 64-bytes or
higher *guaranteed* to be misaligned. The test case added with r245668
even tests this exact scenario, and asserted the incorrect behavior,
which I somehow failed to notice. D'oh.

This change fixes the frame lowering code to align the stack size
*after* adding the spill area, instead.

James Y Knight 667395f334 [Sparc] Support user-specified stack object overalignment.
Note: I do not implement a base pointer, so it's still impossible to
have dynamic realignment AND dynamic alloca in the same function.

This also moves the code for determining the frame index reference
into getFrameIndexReference, where it belongs, instead of inline in
eliminateFrameIndex.

[Begin long-winded screed]

Now, stack realignment for Sparc is actually a silly thing to support,
because the Sparc ABI has no need for it -- unlike the situation on
x86, the stack is ALWAYS aligned to the required alignment for the CPU
instructions: 8 bytes on sparcv8, and 16 bytes on sparcv9.

However, LLVM unfortunately implements user-specified overalignment
using stack realignment support, so for now, I'm going to go along
with that tradition. GCC instead treats objects which have alignment
specification greater than the maximum CPU-required alignment for the
target as a separate block of stack memory, with their own virtual
base pointer (which gets aligned). Doing it that way avoids needing to
implement per-target support for stack realignment, except for the
targets which *actually* have an ABI-specified stack alignment which
is too small for the CPU's requirements.

Further unfortunately in LLVM, the default canRealignStack for all
targets effectively returns true, despite that implementing that is
something a target needs to do specifically. So, the previous behavior
on Sparc was to silently ignore the user's specified stack
alignment. Ugh.

Yet MORE unfortunate, if a target actually does return false from
canRealignStack, that also causes the user-specified alignment to be
*silently ignored*, rather than emitting an error.

(I started looking into fixing that last, but it broke a bunch of
tests, because LLVM actually *depends* on having it silently ignored:
some architectures (e.g. non-linux i386) have smaller stack alignment
than spilled-register alignment. But, the fact that a register needs
spilling is not known until within the register allocator. And by that
point, the decision to not reserve the frame pointer has been frozen
in place. And without a frame pointer, stack realignment is not
possible. So, canRealignStack() returns false, and
needsStackRealignment() then returns false, assuming everyone can just
go on their merry way assuming the alignment requirements were
probably just suggestions after-all. Sigh...)

James Y Knight 3994be87de [Sparc] Implement i64 load/store support for 32-bit sparc.
The LDD/STD instructions can load/store a 64bit quantity from/to
memory to/from a consecutive even/odd pair of (32-bit) registers. They
are part of SparcV8, and also present in SparcV9. (Although deprecated
there, as you can store 64bits in one register).

As recommended on llvmdev in the thread "How to enable use of 64bit
load/store for 32bit architecture" from Apr 2015, I've modeled the
64-bit load/store operations as working on a v2i32 type, rather than
making i64 a legal type, but with few legal operations. The latter
does not (currently) work, as there is much code in llvm which assumes
that if i64 is legal, operations like "add" will actually work on it.

The same assumption does not hold for v2i32 -- for vector types, it is
workable to support only load/store, and expand everything else.

This patch:
- Adds a new register class, IntPair, for even/odd pairs of registers.

- Modifies the list of reserved registers, the stack spilling code,
and register copying code to support the IntPair register class.

- Adds support in AsmParser. (note that in asm text, you write the
name of the first register of the pair only. So the parser has to
morph the single register into the equivalent paired register).

- Adds the new instructions themselves (LDD/STD/LDDA/STDA).

- Hooks up the instructions and registers as a vector type v2i32. Adds
  custom legalizer to transform i64 load/stores into v2i32 load/stores
and bitcasts, so that the new instructions can actually be
generated, and marks all operations other than load/store on v2i32
  as needing to be expanded.

- Copies the unfortunate SelectInlineAsm hack from ARMISelDAGToDAG.
This hack undoes the transformation of i64 operands into two
  arbitrarily-allocated separate i32 registers in
SelectionDAGBuilder. and instead passes them in a single
IntPair. (Arbitrarily allocated registers are not useful, asm code
expects to be receiving a pair, which can be passed to ldd/std.)

Also adds a bunch of test cases covering all the bugs I've added along
the way.

- Mark ASRs as non-allocatable, so it won't try to arbitrarily use

- Instead of inserting explicit WRASR/RDASR nodes in the MUL/DIV

- Also...mark div as using Y, not just writing it.

David Majnemer 7fddeccb8b Move the personality function from LandingPadInst to Function
The personality routine currently lives in the LandingPadInst.

This isn't desirable because:
- All LandingPadInsts in the same function must have the same
personality routine. This means that each LandingPadInst beyond the
first has an operand which produces no additional information.

- There is ongoing work to introduce EH IR constructs other than
LandingPadInst. Moving the personality routine off of any one
particular Instruction and onto the parent function seems a lot better
than have N different places a personality function can sneak onto an
  exceptional function.

David Blaikie 23af64846f [opaque pointer type] Add textual IR support for explicit type parameter to the call instruction
See r230786 and r230794 for similar changes to gep and load
respectively.

Call is a bit different because it often doesn't have a single explicit
type - usually the type is deduced from the arguments, and just the
return type is explicit. In those cases there's no need to change the
IR.

When that's not the case, the IR usually contains the pointer type of
the first operand - but since typed pointers are going away, that
representation is insufficient so I'm just stripping the "pointerness"
of the explicit type away.

This does make the IR a bit weird - it /sort of/ reads like the type of
the first operand: "call void () %x(" but %x is actually of type "void
()*" and will eventually be just of type "ptr". But this seems not too
bad and I don't think it would benefit from repeating the type
("void (), void () * %x(" and then eventually "void (), ptr %x(") as has
been done with gep and load.

This also has a side benefit: since the explicit type is no longer a
pointer, there's no ambiguity between an explicit type and a function
that returns a function pointer. Previously this case needed an explicit
type (eg: a function returning a void() function was written as
"call void () () * @x(" rather than "call void () * @x(" because of the
ambiguity between a function returning a pointer to a void() function
and a function returning void).

No ambiguity means even function pointer return types can just be
written alone, without writing the whole function's type.

This leaves /only/ the varargs case where the explicit type is required.

Given the special type syntax in call instructions, the regex-fu used
for migration was a bit more involved in its own unique way (as every
one of these is) so here it is. Use it in conjunction with the apply.sh
script and associated find/xargs commands I've provided in rr230786 to
migrate your out of tree tests. Do let me know if any of this doesn't
cover your cases & we can iterate on a more general script/regexes to
help others with out of tree tests.

About 9 test cases couldn't be automatically migrated - half of those
were functions returning function pointers, where I just had to manually
delete the function argument types now that we didn't need an explicit
function type there. The other half were typedefs of function types used
in calls - just had to manually drop the * from those.

David Blaikie 79e6c74981 [opaque pointer type] Add textual IR support for explicit type parameter to getelementptr instruction
One of several parallel first steps to remove the target type of pointers,
replacing them with a single opaque pointer type.

This adds an explicit type parameter to the gep instruction so that when the
first parameter becomes an opaque pointer type, the type to gep through is
still available to the instructions.

* This doesn't modify gep operators, only instructions (operators will be
  handled separately)

* Textual IR changes only. Bitcode (including upgrade) and changing the
in-memory representation will be in separate changes.

* geps of vectors are transformed as:
    getelementptr <4 x float*> %x, ...
  ->getelementptr float, <4 x float*> %x, ...
Then, once the opaque pointer type is introduced, this will ultimately look
  like:
    getelementptr float, <4 x ptr> %x
with the unambiguous interpretation that it is a vector of pointers to float.

* address spaces remain on the pointer, not the type:
    getelementptr float addrspace(1)* %x
  ->getelementptr float, float addrspace(1)* %x
  Then, eventually:
    getelementptr float, ptr addrspace(1) %x

Importantly, the massive amount of test case churn has been automated by
same crappy python code. I had to manually update a few test cases that
wouldn't fit the script's model (r228970,r229196,r229197,r229198). The
python script just massages stdin and writes the result to stdout, I
then wrapped that in a shell script to handle replacing files, then
using the usual find+xargs to migrate all the files.

update.py:
import fileinput
import sys
import re

ibrep = re.compile(r"(^.*?[^%\w]getelementptr inbounds )(((?:<\d* x )?)(.*?)(| addrspace\(\d\)) *\*(|>)(?:$| *(?:%|@|null|undef|blockaddress|getelementptr|addrspacecast|bitcast|inttoptr|\[\[[a-zA-Z]|\{\{).*$))")

      line = conv(re.match(ibrep, line), line)
  elif line.find("getelementptr ") != line.find("getelementptr ("):
    line = conv(re.match(normrep, line), line)
  sys.stdout.write(line)

apply.sh:
for name in "$@"
do
  python3 `dirname "$0"`/update.py < "$name" > "$name.tmp" && mv "$name.tmp" "$name"
  rm -f "$name.tmp"
done

The actual commands:
From llvm/src:
find test/ -name *.ll | xargs ./apply.sh
From llvm/src/tools/clang:
find test/ -name *.mm -o -name *.m -o -name *.cpp -o -name *.c | xargs -I '{}' ../../apply.sh "{}"
From llvm/src/tools/polly:
find test/ -name *.ll | xargs ./apply.sh

After that, check-all (with llvm, clang, clang-tools-extra, lld,
compiler-rt, and polly all checked out).

The extra 'rm' in the apply.sh script is due to a few files in clang's test
suite using interesting unicode stuff that my python script was throwing
exceptions on. None of those files needed to be migrated, so it seemed
sufficient to ignore those cases.

On MachO, and MachO only, we cannot have a truly empty function since that
breaks the linker logic for atomizing the section.

When we are emitting a frame pointer, the presence of an unreachable will
create a cfi instruction pointing past the last instruction. This is perfectly
fine. The FDE information encodes the pc range it applies to. If some tool
cannot handle this, we should explicitly say which bug we are working around
and only work around it when it is actually relevant (not for ELF for example).

Given the unreachable we could omit the .cfi_def_cfa_register, but then
again, we could also omit the entire function prologue if we wanted to.

Tim Northover 420a216817 IR: add "cmpxchg weak" variant to support permitted failure.
This commit adds a weak variant of the cmpxchg operation, as described
in C++11. A cmpxchg instruction with this modifier is permitted to
fail to store, even if the comparison indicated it should.

As a result, cmpxchg instructions must return a flag indicating
success in addition to their original iN value loaded. Thus, for
uniformity *all* cmpxchg instructions now return "{ iN, i1 }". The
second flag is 1 when the store succeeded.

At the DAG level, a new ATOMIC_CMP_SWAP_WITH_SUCCESS node has been
added as the natural representation for the new cmpxchg instructions.
It is a strong cmpxchg.

By default this gets Expanded to the existing ATOMIC_CMP_SWAP during
Legalization, so existing backends should see no change in behaviour.
If they wish to deal with the enhanced node instead, they can call
setOperationAction on it. Beware: as a node with 2 results, it cannot
be selected from TableGen.

Currently, no use is made of the extra information provided in this
patch. Test updates are almost entirely adapting the input IR to the
new scheme.

Summary for out of tree users:
------------------------------

+ Legacy Bitcode files are upgraded during read.
+ Legacy assembly IR files will be invalid.
+ Front-ends must adapt to different type for "cmpxchg".
+ Backends should be unaffected by default.

bad enough (particularly with no way to override it), but it should at least be

This patch implements that logic: first get the *correct* string for the

+ ARM64: we print "neg X, Y" instead of "sub X, xzr, Y".
+ ARM64: we skip implicit "uxtx" and "uxtw" modifiers.
+ Sparc: we print "mov A, B" instead of "or %g0, A, B".
+ Sparc: we print "fcmpX A, B" instead of "fcmpX %fcc0, A, B"

Reid Kleckner 7941856445 Allow sret on the second parameter as well as the first
MSVC always places the implicit sret parameter after the implicit this
parameter of instance methods. We used to handle this for
x86_thiscallcc by allocating the sret parameter on the stack and leaving
the this pointer in ecx, but that doesn't handle alternative calling
conventions like cdecl, stdcall, fastcall, or the win64 convention.

Instead, change the verifier to allow sret on the second parameter.

This also requires changing the Mips and X86 backends to return the
argument with the sret parameter, instead of assuming that the sret
parameter comes first.

The Sparc backend also returns sret parameters in a register, but I
wasn't able to update it to handle secondary sret parameters. It
currently calls report_fatal_error if you feed it an sret in the second
parameter.

Rafael Espindola 2fb5bc33a3 Remove the linker_private and linker_private_weak linkages.
These linkages were introduced some time ago, but it was never very
clear what exactly their semantics were or what they should be used
for. Some investigation found these uses:

* utf-16 strings in clang.
* non-unnamed_addr strings produced by the sanitizers.

It turns out they were just working around a more fundamental problem.
For some sections a MachO linker needs a symbol in order to split the
section into atoms, and llvm had no idea that was the case. I fixed
that in r201700 and it is now safe to use the private linkage. When
the object ends up in a section that requires symbols, llvm will use a
'l' prefix instead of a 'L' prefix and things just work.

With that, these linkages were already dead, but there was a potential
future user in the objc metadata information. I am still looking at
CGObjcMac.cpp, but at this point I am convinced that linker_private
and linker_private_weak are not what they need.

The objc uses are currently split in

* Regular symbols (no '\01' prefix). LLVM already directly provides
whatever semantics they need.
* Uses of a private name (start with "\01L" or "\01l") and private
linkage. We can drop the "\01L" and "\01l" prefixes as soon as llvm
agrees with clang on L being ok or not for a given section. I have two
patches in code review for this.
* Uses of private name and weak linkage.

The last case is the one that one could think would fit one of these
linkages. That is not the case. The semantics are

* the linker will merge these symbol by *name*.
* the linker will hide them in the final DSO.

Given that the merging is done by name, any of the private (or
internal) linkages would be a bad match. They allow llvm to rename the
symbols, and that is really not what we want. From the llvm point of
view, these objects should really be (linkonce|weak)(_odr)?.

For now, just keeping the "\01l" prefix is probably the best for these
symbols. If we one day want to have a more direct support in llvm,
IMHO what we should add is not a linkage, it is just a hidden_symbol
attribute. It would be applicable to multiple linkages. For example,
on weak it would produce the current behavior we have for objc
metadata. On internal, it would be equivalent to private (and we
should then remove private).

The syntax for "cmpxchg" should now look something like:

	cmpxchg i32* %addr, i32 42, i32 3 acquire monotonic

that no exchange takes place. It should be no stronger than the first ordering
constraint and cannot be either "release" or "acq_rel" (since no store will

Daniel Sanders 753e17629d Re-commit: Demote EmitRawText call in AsmPrinter::EmitInlineAsm() and remove hasRawTextSupport() call
Summary:
AsmPrinter::EmitInlineAsm() will no longer use the EmitRawText() call for
targets with mature MC support. Such targets will always parse the inline
assembly (even when emitting assembly). Targets without mature MC support
continue to use EmitRawText() for assembly output.

The hasRawTextSupport() check in AsmPrinter::EmitInlineAsm() has been replaced
with MCAsmInfo::UseIntegratedAs which when true, causes the integrated assembler
to parse inline assembly (even when emitting assembly output). UseIntegratedAs
is set to true for targets that consider any failure to parse valid assembly
to be a bug. Target specific subclasses generally enable the integrated
assembler in their constructor. The default value can be overridden with
-no-integrated-as.

All tests that rely on inline assembly supporting invalid assembly (for example,
those that use mnemonics such as 'foo' or 'hello world') have been updated to
disable the integrated assembler.

Changes since review (and last commit attempt):
- Fixed test failures that were missed due to configuration of local build.
(fixes crash.ll and a couple others).
- Fixed tests that happened to pass because the local build was on X86
  (should fix 2007-12-17-InvokeAsm.ll)
- mature-mc-support.ll's should no longer require all targets to be compiled.
(should fix ARM and PPC buildbots)
- Object output (-filetype=obj and similar) now forces the integrated assembler
to be enabled regardless of default setting or -no-integrated-as.
  (should fix SystemZ buildbots)

Jakob Stoklund Olesen b6b35a4955 Always let value types influence register classes.
When creating a virtual register for a def, the value type should be
used to pick the register class. If we only use the register class
constraint on the instruction, we might pick a too large register class.

Some registers can store values of different sizes. For example, the x86
xmm registers can hold f32, f64, and 128-bit vectors. The three
different value sizes are represented by register classes with identical
register sets: FR32, FR64, and VR128. These register classes have
different spill slot sizes, so it is important to use the right one.

The register class constraint on an instruction doesn't necessarily care
about the size of the value its defining. The value type determines
that.

This fixes a problem where InstrEmitter was picking 32-bit register
classes for 64-bit values on SPARC.

Jakob Stoklund Olesen e7084a1c5c The SPARCv9 ABI returns a float in %f0.
This is different from the argument passing convention which puts the
first float argument in %f1.

With this patch, all returned floats are treated as if the 'inreg' flag
were set. This means multiple float return values get packed in %f0,
%f1, %f2, ...

Note that when returning a struct in registers, clang will set the
'inreg' flag on the return value, so that behavior is unchanged. This
also happens when returning a float _Complex.

Daniel Dunbar 9efbedfd35 [tests] Cleanup initialization of test suffixes.
- Instead of setting the suffixes in a bunch of places, just set one master
list in the top-level config. We now only modify the suffix list in a few
suites that have one particular unique suffix (.ml, .mc, .yaml, .td, .py).

 - Aside from removing the need for a bunch of lit.local.cfg files, this enables
4 tests that were inadvertently being skipped (one in
   Transforms/BranchFolding, a .s file each in DebugInfo/AArch64 and
CodeGen/PowerPC, and one in CodeGen/SI which is now failing and has been
   XFAILED).

 - This commit also fixes a bunch of config files to use config.root instead of
   older copy-pasted code.

Andrew Trick 8485257d6d Allocate local registers in order for optimal coloring.
Also avoid locals evicting locals just because they want a cheaper register.

Problem: MI Sched knows exactly how many registers we have and assumes
they can be colored. In cases where we have large blocks, usually from
unrolled loops, greedy coloring fails. This is a source of
"regressions" from the MI Scheduler on x86. I noticed this issue on
x86 where we have long chains of two-address defs in the same live
range. It's easy to see this in matrix multiplication benchmarks like
IRSmk and even the unit test misched-matmul.ll.

A fundamental difference between the LLVM register allocator and
conventional graph coloring is that in our model a live range can't
discover its neighbors, it can only verify its neighbors. That's why
we initially went for greedy coloring and added eviction to deal with
the hard cases. However, for singly defined and two-address live
ranges, we can optimally color without visiting neighbors simply by
processing the live ranges in instruction order.

Other beneficial side effects:

It is much easier to understand and debug regalloc for large blocks
when the live ranges are allocated in order. Yes, global allocation is
still very confusing, but it's nice to be able to comprehend what
happened locally.

Heuristics could be added to bias register assignment based on
instruction locality (think late register pairing, banks...).

Intuituvely this will make some test cases that are on the threshold
of register pressure more stable.

Benjamin Kramer e2a1d89e14 Switch spill weights from a basic loop depth estimation to BlockFrequencyInfo.
The main advantages here are way better heuristics, taking into account not
just loop depth but also __builtin_expect and other static heuristics and will
eventually learn how to use profile info. Most of the work in this patch is
pushing the MachineBlockFrequencyInfo analysis into the right places.

This is good for a 5% speedup on zlib's deflate (x86_64), there were some very
unfortunate spilling decisions in its hottest loop in longest_match(). Other
benchmarks I tried were mostly neutral.

This changes register allocation in subtle ways, update the tests for it.

2013-04-07 19:10:57 +00:00
Jakob Stoklund Olesen edaf66b056 Implement LowerReturn_64 for SPARC v9.
Integer return values are sign or zero extended by the callee, and
structs up to 32 bytes in size can be returned in registers.

The CC_Sparc64 CallingConv definition is shared between
LowerFormalArguments_64 and LowerReturn_64. Function arguments and
return values are passed in the same registers.

The inreg flag is also used for return values. This is required to handle
C functions returning structs containing floats and ints:

  struct ifp {
    int i;
    float f;
  };

  struct ifp f(void);

LLVM IR:

  define inreg { i32, float } @f() {
     ...
     ret { i32, float } %retval
  }

The ABI requires that %retval.i is returned in the high bits of %i0
while %retval.f goes in %f1.

Without the inreg return value attribute, %retval.i would go in %i0 and
%retval.f would go in %f3 which is a more efficient way of returning
%multiple values, but it is not ABI compliant for returning C structs.

Jakob Stoklund Olesen 03d9f7fda6 SPARC v9 stack pointer bias.

This makes more local variables directly accessible via [%fp+simm13]
addressing.

2013-04-06 21:38:57 +00:00
Jakob Stoklund Olesen 1c9a95ab2a Complete formal arguments for the SPARC v9 64-bit ABI.
All arguments are formally assigned to stack positions and then promoted
to floating point and integer registers. Since there are more floating
point registers than integer registers, this can cause situations where
floating point arguments are assigned to registers after integer
arguments that where assigned to the stack.

Use the inreg flag to indicate 32-bit fragments of structs containing
both float and int members.

The three-way shadowing between stack, integer, and floating point
registers requires custom argument lowering. The good news is that
return values are passed in the exact same way, and we can share the
code.

 - Update LowerReturn to handle structs returned in registers.
 - LowerCall.
