This patch only implements support for version scripts of the form:
{ [ global: symbol1; symbol2; [...]; symbolN; ] local: *; };
No wildcards are supported, other than for the local entry. Symbol versioning
is also not supported.
It works by introducing a new Symbol flag which tracks whether a symbol
appears in the global section of a version script.
This patch also simplifies the logic in SymbolBody::isPreemptible(), and
teaches it to handle the case where symbols with default visibility in DSOs
do not appear in the dynamic symbol table because of a version script.

Originally, linker scripts were basically an alternative way to specify
options to the command line options. But as we add more features to hanlde
symbols and sections, many member functions needed to be templated.
Now most the members are templated. It is probably time to template the
entire class.
Previously, LinkerScript is an executor of the linker script as well as
a storage of linker script configurations. This is not suitable to template
the class because when we are reading linker script files, we don't know
the ELF type yet, so we can't instantiate ELF-templated classes.
In this patch, I defined a new class, ScriptConfiguration, to store
linker script configurations. ScriptParser writes parse results to it,
and LinkerScript uses them.

This patch implements the --dynamic-list option, which adds a list of
global symbol that either should not be bounded by default definition
when creating shared libraries, or add in dynamic symbol table in the
case of creating executables.
The patch modifies the ScriptParserBase class to use a list of Token
instead of StringRef, which contains information if the token is a
quoted or unquoted strings. It is used to use a faster search for
exact match symbol name.
The input file follow a similar format of linker script with some
simplifications (it does not have scope or node names). It leads
to a simplified parser define in DynamicList.{cpp,h}.
Different from ld/gold neither glob pattern nor mangled names

start-lib and end-lib are options to link object files in the same

the object is linked only when the file is needed to resolve

Our symbol representation was redundant, and some times would get out of
sync. It had an Elf_Sym, but some fields were copied to SymbolBody.
Different parts of the code were checking the bits in SymbolBody and
others were checking Elf_Sym.
There are two general approaches to fix this:
* Copy the required information and don't store and Elf_Sym.
* Don't copy the information and always use the Elf_Smy.
The second way sounds tempting, but has a big problem: we would have to
template SymbolBody. I started doing it, but it requires templeting
*everything* and creates a bit chicken and egg problem at the driver
where we have to find ELFT before we can create an ArchiveFile for
example.
As much as possible I compared the test differences with what gold and
bfd produce to make sure they are still valid. In most cases we are just
adding hidden visibility to a local symbol, which is harmless.
In most tests this is a small speedup. The only slowdown was scylla

This patch implements --build-id. After the linker creates an output file
in the memory buffer, it computes the FNV1 hash of the resulting file
and set the hash to the .note section as a build-id.
GNU ld and gold have the same feature, but their default choice of the
hash function is different. Their default is SHA1.
We made a deliberate choice to not use a secure hash function for the
sake of performance. Computing a secure hash is slow -- for example,
MD5 throughput is usually 400 MB/s or so. SHA1 is slower than that.
As a result, if you pass --build-id to gold, then the linker becomes about
10% slower than that without the option. We observed a similar degradation
in an experimental implementation of build-id for LLD. On the other hand,
we observed only 1-2% performance degradation with the FNV hash.
Since build-id is not for digital certificate or anything, we think that
a very small probability of collision is acceptable.
We considered using other signals such as using input file timestamps as
inputs to a secure hash function. But such signals would have an issue
with build reproducibility (if you build a binary from the same source
tree using the same toolchain, the build id should become the same.)
GNU linkers accepts --build-id=<style> option where style is one of
"MD5", "SHA1", or an arbitrary hex string. That option is out of scope

This patch implements the same algorithm as LLD/COFF's ICF. I'm
not going to repeat the same description about how it works, so you
want to read the comment in ICF.cpp in this patch if you want to know
the details. This algorithm should be more powerful than the ICF
algorithm implemented in GNU gold. It can even merge mutually-recursive
functions (which is harder than one might think).
ICF is a fairly effective size optimization. Here are some examples.
LLD: 37.14 MB -> 35.80 MB (-3.6%)
Clang: 59.41 MB -> 57.80 MB (-2.7%)
The lacking feature is "safe" version of ICF. This merges all
identical sections. That is not compatible with a C/C++ language
requirement that two distinct functions must have distinct addresses.
But as long as your program do not rely on the pointer equality
(which is in many cases true), your program should work with the
feature. LLD works fine for example.
GNU gold implements so-called "safe ICF" that identifies functions
that are safe to merge by heuristics -- for example, gold thinks
that constructors are safe to merge because there is no way to
take an address of a constructor in C++. We have a different idea
which David Majnemer suggested that we add NOPs at beginning of
merged functions so that two or more pointers can have distinct
values. We can do whichever we want, but this patch does not
include neither.

In many situations, we don't want to exit at the first error even in the
process model. For example, it is better to report all undefined symbols
rather than reporting the first one that the linker picked up randomly.
In order to handle such errors, we don't need to wrap everything with
ErrorOr (thanks for David Blaikie for pointing this out!) Instead, we
can set a flag to record the fact that we found an error and keep it
going until it reaches a reasonable checkpoint.
This idea should be applicable to other places. For example, we can
ignore broken relocations and check for errors after visiting all relocs.
In this patch, I rename error to fatal, and introduce another version of
error which doesn't call exit. That function instead sets HasError to true.
Once HasError becomes true, it stays true, so that we know that there
was an error if it is true.
I think introducing a non-noreturn error reporting function is by itself
a good idea, and it looks to me that this also provides a gradual path
towards lld-as-a-library (or at least embed-lld-to-your-program) without
sacrificing code readability with lots of ErrorOr's.

Section garbage collection is a feature to remove unused sections
from outputs. Unused sections are sections that cannot be reachable
from known GC-root symbols or sections. Naturally the feature is
implemented as a mark-sweep garbage collector.
In this patch, I added Live bit to InputSectionBase. If and only
if Live bit is on, the section will be written to the output.
Starting from GC-root symbols or sections, a new function, markLive(),
visits all reachable sections and sets their Live bits. Writer then
ignores sections whose Live bit is off, so that such sections are
excluded from the output.
This change has small negative impact on performance if you use
the feature because making sections means more work. The time to
link Clang changes from 0.356s to 0.386s, or +8%.

We can put them in an anonymous namespace. In order to avoid
merge conflict with other people's patches, I'll do that later.

This patch adds AsNeeded and IsUsed bool fields to SharedFile. AsNeeded bit
is set if the DSO is enclosed with --as-needed and --no-as-needed. IsUsed
bit is off by default. When we adds a symbol to the symbol table for dynamic
linking, we set its SharedFile's IsUsed bit.
If AsNeeded is set but IsUsed is not set, we don't want to write that
file's SO name to DT_NEEDED field.

In the linker script, -l and = have the same meaning as in the command line.
In addition to that, if a path is not absolute, the path needs to be searched
from the search paths. This patch implements them.
llvm-svn: 249967
Previously, each ArgParser owned a BumpPtrAllocator, and arguments parsed
by an ArgParser would refer strings allocated using the BumpPtrAllocator
only when response files were used. This could cause a subtle bug because
such ownership was not obvious.
This patch moves the ownership from ArgParser to Driver and make the
ownership explicit.
llvm-svn: 249963
SymbolTable was not a right place for initialization. We had to do that
because Driver didn't know what type of ELF objects are being handled.
We taught Driver that, so we can now move this code to Driver.
llvm-svn: 249904
SymbolTable was not a template class. Instead we had switch-case-based
type dispatch to call desired functions. We had to do that because
SymbolTable was created before we know what ELF type objects had been
passed.
Every time I tried to add a new function to the symbol table, I had to
define a dispatcher which consist of a single switch statement.
It also brought an restriction what the driver can do. For example,
we cannot add undefined symbols before any files are added to the symbol
table. That's because no symbols can be added until the symbol table
knows the ELF type, but when it knows about that, it's too late.
In this patch, the driver makes a decision on what ELF type objects
are being handled. Then the driver creates a SymbolTable object for
an appropriate ELF type.

When generating an executable or shared library, mark it to tell the dynamic linker to resolve all symbols when the program is started, or when the shared library is linked to using dlopen, instead of deferring function call resolution to the point when the function is first called.

The entries are added if there are "_init" or "_fini" entries in
the symbol table respectively. According to the behavior of ld,
entries are inserted even for undefined symbols.
Symbol names can be overridden by using -init and -fini command
line switches. If used, these switches neither add new symbol table
entries nor require those symbols to be resolved.

Add symbol specified with -u as undefined which may cause additional
object files from archives to be linked into the resulting binary.

Summary:
If --whole-archive is used, all symbols from the following archives are added to the output. --no-whole-archive restores default behavior. These switches can be used multiple times.
NB. We have to keep an ArchiveFile instance within SymbolTable even if --whole-archive mode is active since it can be a thin archive which contains just names of external files. In that case actual memory buffers for the archive members will be stored within the File member of ArchiveFile class.

Opening a file and dispatching to readLinkerScript() or createFile()
is a common operation. We want to use that at least from Driver and
from LinkerScript. In COFF, we had the same problem. This patch
resolves the problem in the same way as we did for COFF.
Now, if you have a path that you want to open, just call
Driver->addFile(StringRef). That function opens the file and handles
that as if that were given by command line. This function is the
only place we call identify_magic().
llvm-svn: 249023
This linker script parser and evaluator is powerful enough to read
Linux's libc.so, which is (despite its name) a linker script that
contains OUTPUT_FORMAT, GROUP and AS_NEEDED directives.
The parser implemented in this patch is a recursive-descendent one.
It does *not* construct an AST but consumes directives in place and
sets the results to Symtab object, like what Driver is doing.
This should be very fast since less objects are allocated, and
this is also more readable.

There were at least two issues with having them together:
* For compatibility checks, we only want to look at the ELF kind.
* Adding support for shared libraries should introduce one InputFile kind,
not 4.

A global variable "Driver" is to re-entry to the driver to parse a
.drectve section. Because the need is COFF-specific, we don't need
this variable for ELF.
llvm-svn: 244680
Various parameters are passed implicitly using Config global variable
already. Output file path is no different from others, so there was no
special reason to handle that differnetly.
This patch changes the signature of writeResult(SymbolTable *, StringRef)
to writeResult(SymbolTable *).
llvm-svn: 244180
We are using Writer more like a function instead of a class.
This patch makes it a function to simplify the interface.
All details of Writer class is now hidden from other parts of the linker.

It can take a single object file and generate a valid executable that executes at the first byte in the text section.
