Simon Atanasyan 14b09810a0 [mips] Put some MIPS-specific sections to separate segments
Three MIPS-specific sections `.reginfo`, `.MIPS.options`, and `.MIPS.abiflags`
are used by loader to read their contents and setup environment for running
a program. Loader looks up these data in the corresponding segments:
`PT_MIPS_REGINFO`, `PT_MIPS_OPTIONS`, and `PT_MIPS_ABIFLAGS` respectively.

This patch put these sections to separate segments like we do already
for ARM `SHT_ARM_EXIDX` section.

That allows obsoleted / limited dynamic linkers refuse to link them.

Rafael Espindola a5d43d004a Propagate sh_entsize out.
No difference in practice other than having sh_entsize in the output.

This should simplify the patch for handling SHF_MERGE in -r.

Peter Smith ccb34efa92 [ELF] Correct sh_info for static symbol table
The sh_info field of the SHT_SYMTAB section holds the index for the
first non-local symbol. When there are global symbols that are output
with STB_LOCAL binding due to having hidden visibility or matching
the local version from a version script, the calculated value of
NumLocals + 1 does not account for them. This change accounts for
global symbols being output with local binding.

Simon Atanasyan 2bd98af563 [ELF][MIPS] Exclude mips .got from PT_GNU_RELRO segment
On MIPS .got section cannot be included into the PT_GNU_RELRO segment.
Sometimes it might work, but in general it is unsupported. One of the
problem is that all sections marked by SHF_MIPS_GPREL should be grouped
together because data in these sections is addressable with a gp
relative address, but such sections might be writable.

This patch exclude mips .got from PT_GNU_RELRO segment and group
SHF_MIPS_GPREL sections.

Peter Collingbourne 628ec9f193 ELF: Place relro sections after non-relro sections in r/w segment.
This is in preparation for my next change, which will introduce a relro
nobits section. That requires that relro sections appear at the end of the

contiguously.

Because of the amount of churn required in the test suite, I'm making this

Simon Atanasyan 6a4eb75c46 [ELF][MIPS] Make _gp, _gp_disp, __gnu_local_gp global symbols
These MIPS specific symbols should be global because in general they can
have an arbitrary value. By default this value is a fixed offset from .got

This patch adds more checks to the mips-gp-local.s test case but marks
it as XFAIL because LLD does not allow redefinition of absolute symbols
value by a linker script. This should be fixed by D27276.

Rui Ueyama 3da3f06dd3 Include version string into ".comment" section.
Summary:
This patch adds a ".comment" section to an output. The comment
section contains the linker's version string. You can now
find out whether a binary is created by LLD or not using objdump
command like this.

  $ objdump -s -j .comment foo

  foo: file format elf64-x86-64

  Contents of section .comment:
   0000 00474343 3a202855 62756e74 7520342e .GCC: (Ubuntu 4.
   0010 382e342d 32756275 6e747531 7e31342e 8.4-2ubuntu1~14.
   ...
   00c0 766d2f74 72756e6b 20323835 38343629 vm/trunk 285846)
   00d0 004c696e 6b65723a 204c4c44 20342e30 .Linker: LLD 4.0
   00e0 2e302028 7472756e 6b203238 36343036 .0 (trunk 286406
   00f0 2900 ).

Compilers emits .comment section as well, so the output contains
both compiler and linker information.

Alternative considered:

I first tried to add a SHT_NOTE section because GNU gold does that.
A NOTE section starts with a header which contains content type.
It turned out that ld.gold sets type NT_GNU_GOLD_VERSION to their
NOTE section. So the NOTE type is only for GNU gold (surprise!)

Next, I tried to create ".linker-version" section. However, it seems
that reusing the existing ".comment" section is better because 1)
other tools already know about .comment section and is able to strip
it and 2) the result contans not only linker info but also compiler
info.

Simon Atanasyan ce02cf0099 [ELF][MIPS] Convert .reginfo and .MIPS.options sections to synthetic input sections
Previously, we have both input and output sections for .reginfo and
.MIPS.options. Now for each such sections we have one synthetic input
sections: MipsReginfoSection and MipsOptionsSection respectively.

Both sections are handled as regular sections until the control reaches
Writer. Writer then aggregates all sections whose type is SHT_MIPS_REGINFO
or SHT_MIPS_OPTIONS to create a single synthesized input section. In that
moment Writer also save GP0 value to the MipsGp0 field of the corresponding
ObjectFile. This value required for R_MIPS_GPREL16 and R_MIPS_GPREL32
relocations calculation.

Peter Collingbourne f6e9b4ec24 ELF: Use hidden visibility for all DefinedSynthetic symbols.
This simplifies the code by allowing us to remove the visibility argument
to functions that create synthetic symbols.

The only functional change is that the visibility of the MIPS "_gp" symbol
is now hidden. Because this symbol is defined in every executable or DSO, it
would be difficult to observe a visibility change here.

Rafael Espindola ccfe3cb3d6 Don't store an Elf_Sym for most symbols.
Our symbol representation was redundant, and some times would get out of
sync. It had an Elf_Sym, but some fields were copied to SymbolBody.

Different parts of the code were checking the bits in SymbolBody and
others were checking Elf_Sym.

There are two general approaches to fix this:
* Copy the required information and don't store and Elf_Sym.
* Don't copy the information and always use the Elf_Smy.

The second way sounds tempting, but has a big problem: we would have to
template SymbolBody. I started doing it, but it requires templeting
*everything* and creates a bit chicken and egg problem at the driver
where we have to find ELFT before we can create an ArchiveFile for
example.

As much as possible I compared the test differences with what gold and
bfd produce to make sure they are still valid. In most cases we are just
adding hidden visibility to a local symbol, which is harmless.

In most tests this is a small speedup. The only slowdown was scylla
(1.006X). The largest speedup was clang with no --build-id, -O3 or
--gc-sections (i.e.: focus on the relocations): 1.019X.

Rui Ueyama 76c0063eeb ELF: Improve performance of string table construction.
String tables in unstripped executable files are fairly large in size.
For example, lld's executable file is about 34.4 MB in my environment,
and of which 3.5 MB is the string table. Efficiency of string table
construction matters.

Previously, the string table was built in an inefficient way. We used
StringTableBuilder to build that and enabled string tail merging,
although tail merging is not effective for the symbol table (you can
only make the string table 0.3% smaller for lld.) Tail merging is
computation intensive task and slow.

This patch eliminates string tail merging.

I changed the way of adding strings to the string table in this patch
too. Previously, strings were added using add() and the same strings
were then passed to getOffset() to get their offsets in the string table.
In this way, getOffset() needs to look up a hash table to get offsets
for given strings. This is a violation of "we look up the symbol table
(or a hash table) only once for each symbol" dogma of the new LLD's
design. Hash table lookup for long C++ mangled names is slow.
I eliminated that lookup in this patch.

In total, this patch improves link time of lld itself about 12%
(3.50 seconds -> 3.08 seconds.)

Simon Atanasyan 1d7df40711 [ELF][MIPS] MIPS .reginfo sections handling
MIPS .reginfo section provides information on the registers used by
the code in the object file. Linker should collect this information and
write .reginfo section in the output file. This section contains a union
of used registers masks taken from input .reginfo sections and final
value of the `_gp` symbol.

For details see the "Register Information" section in Chapter 4 in the
following document:
ftp://www.linux-mips.org/pub/linux/mips/doc/ABI/mipsabi.pdf

The patch implements .reginfo sections handling with a couple missed
features: a) it does not put output .reginfo section into the separate
REGINFO segment; b) it does not merge `ri_cprmask` masks from input
section. These features will be implemented later.

Rui Ueyama e79b09a616 ELF: Make .note.GNU-stack more compatible with traditional linkers.
With this patch, lld creates PT_GNU_STACK segments only when all input
files have .note.GNU-stack sections. This is in line with other linkers
with a minor difference (we don't care about .note.GNU-stack rwx bits as
you can always remove .note.GNU-stack sections instead of setting x bit.)

At least, NetBSD loader does not understand PT_GNU_STACK segments and
reject any executables that have the section. This patch makes lld
compatible with such operating systems.
