Simon Atanasyan 8c8a5b5f81 [ELF][MIPS] Handling 'packed' N64 ABI relocations
MIPS N64 ABI packs multiple relocations into the single relocation
record. In general, all up to three relocations can have arbitrary types.
In fact, Clang and GCC uses only a few combinations. For now, we support
two of them. That is allow to pass at least all LLVM test suite cases.

<any relocation> / R_MIPS_SUB / R_MIPS_HI16 | R_MIPS_LO16
<any relocation> / R_MIPS_64 / R_MIPS_NONE

The first relocation is a 'real' relocation which is calculated using
the corresponding symbol's value. The second and the third relocations
used to modify result of the first one: extend it to 64-bit, extract
high or low part etc. For details, see part 2.9 'Relocation' at
https://dmz-portal.mips.com/mw/images/8/82/007-4658-001.pdf

These relocations introduced by MIPS N64 ABI. R_MIPS_GOT_DISP references

R_MIPS_GOT_OFST used together with R_MIPS_GOT_PAGE. This relocation
calculates offset from beginning of memory page to the symbol address.

These relocations are calculated as S + A - DTPREL or S + A - TPREL,

Simon Atanasyan 1ca263c890 [ELF][MIPS] Make R_MIPS_LO16 a relative relocation if it references _gp_disp symbol
The _gp_disp symbol designates offset between start of function and 'gp'
pointer into GOT. The following code is a typical MIPS function preamble
used to setup $gp register:

lui $gp, %hi(_gp_disp)
addi $gp, $gp, %lo(_gp_disp)

To calculate R_MIPS_HI16 / R_MIPS_LO16 relocations results we use
the following formulas:

%hi(_gp - P + A)
%lo(_gp - P + A + 4),
where _gp is a value of _gp symbol, A is addend, and P current address.

The R_MIPS_LO16 relocation references _gp_disp symbol is always the second
instruction. That is why we need four byte adjustments. The patch assigns
R_PC type for R_MIPS_LO16 relocation and adjusts its addend by 4. That fix
R_MIPS_LO16 calculation.

Rafael Espindola 22ef956a45 Change how we apply relocations.
With this patch we use the first scan over the relocations to remember
the information we found about them: will them be relaxed, will a plt be
used, etc.

With that the actual relocation application becomes much simpler. That
is particularly true for the interfaces in Target.h.

This unfortunately means that we now do two passes over relocations for
non SHF_ALLOC sections. I think this can be solved by factoring out the
code that scans a single relocation. It can then be used both as a scan
that record info and for a dedicated direct relocation of non SHF_ALLOC
sections.

I also think it is possible to reduce the number of enum values by
representing a target with just an OutputSection and an offset (which
can be from the start or end).

This should unblock adding features like relocation optimizations.

Adhemerval Zanella 15cba9e7e5 [lld] [ELF/AARCH64] Fix dynamic relocation from PIC GOT access
This patch fixes dynamic relocation creation from GOT access in dynamic
objects on aarch64. Current code creates a plt relative one
(R_AARCH64_JUMP_SLOT) instead of a got relative (R_AARCH64_GLOB_DAT).

It leads the programs fails with:

$ cat t.cc

std::string test = "hello...\n";

int main ()
{
  printf ("%s\n", test.c_str());
  return 0;
}
$ clang++ t.cc -fpic -o t
$ ./t
hello...

Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Due the fact it will try to access the plt instead of the got for
__cxa_atexit registration for the std::string destruction. It will
lead in a bogus function address in atexit.

Similar to r265462, TLS related relocations aren't marked as relative,
meaning that we end up generating R_AARCH64_RELATIVE relocations for
them. This change adds TLS relocations that I've seen on my system. With

While trying to get PIE work on CloudABI for x86-64, I noticed that even
though GNU ld would generate functional binaries, LLD would not. It
turns out that we generate relocations for referencing TLS objects
inside of the text segment, which shouldn't happen.

This change extends the isRelRelative() function to list some additional
relocation types that should be treated as relative. This makes my C

Rafael Espindola ccfe3cb3d6 Don't store an Elf_Sym for most symbols.
Our symbol representation was redundant, and some times would get out of
sync. It had an Elf_Sym, but some fields were copied to SymbolBody.

Different parts of the code were checking the bits in SymbolBody and
others were checking Elf_Sym.

There are two general approaches to fix this:
* Copy the required information and don't store and Elf_Sym.
* Don't copy the information and always use the Elf_Smy.

The second way sounds tempting, but has a big problem: we would have to
template SymbolBody. I started doing it, but it requires templeting
*everything* and creates a bit chicken and egg problem at the driver
where we have to find ELFT before we can create an ArchiveFile for
example.

As much as possible I compared the test differences with what gold and
bfd produce to make sure they are still valid. In most cases we are just
adding hidden visibility to a local symbol, which is harmless.

In most tests this is a small speedup. The only slowdown was scylla
(1.006X). The largest speedup was clang with no --build-id, -O3 or
--gc-sections (i.e.: focus on the relocations): 1.019X.

Original message:

Change how we handle R_MIPS_LO16.

Mips aligns PT_LOAD to 16 bits (0x10000). That means that the lower 16
bits are always the same, so we can, effectively, say that the
relocation is relative.

Simon Atanasyan 13f6da1d2c [ELF] Implement infrastructure for thunk code creation
Some targets might require creation of thunks. For example, MIPS targets
require stubs to call PIC code from non-PIC one. The patch implements
infrastructure for thunk code creation and provides support for MIPS
LA25 stubs. Any MIPS PIC code function is invoked with its address
in register $t9. So if we have a branch instruction from non-PIC code
to the PIC one we cannot make the jump directly and need to create a small
stub to save the target function address.
See page 3-38 ftp://www.linux-mips.org/pub/linux/mips/doc/ABI/mipsabi.pdf

- In relocation scanning phase we ask target about thunk creation necessity
by calling `TagetInfo::needsThunk` method. The `InputSection` class
maintains list of Symbols requires thunk creation.

- Reassigning offsets performed for each input sections after relocation
scanning complete because position of each section might change due
thunk creation.

- The patch introduces new dedicated value for DefinedSynthetic symbols
DefinedSynthetic::SectionEnd. Synthetic symbol with that value always
points to the end of the corresponding output section. That allows to
escape updating synthetic symbols if output sections sizes changes after
relocation scanning due thunk creation.

- In the `InputSection::writeTo` method we write thunks after corresponding
input section. Each thunk is written by calling `TargetInfo::writeThunk` method.

- The patch supports the only type of thunk code for each target. For now,
it is enough.

R_X86_64_GOTPCRELX and R_X86_64_REX_GOTPCRELX relocations were added in latest ABI:
https://github.com/hjl-tools/x86-psABI/wiki/x86-64-psABI-r249.pdf

They should be generated instead of R_X86_64_GOTPCREL for cases
when relaxation is possible. Currently this patch just process them in the
same way like R_X86_64_GOTPCREL. That should work for now
and we can implement relaxations later.

There is no testcases provided as I think there is no way to generate
such relocations using llvm-mc atm.

exception is R_MIPS_PC32. GNU linker creates a copy relocation or PLT

Finally some Local-Exec relocation are handled in relocateOne:

Rui Ueyama 64cfffd333 ELF: Rename error -> fatal and redefine error as a non-noreturn function.
In many situations, we don't want to exit at the first error even in the
process model. For example, it is better to report all undefined symbols
rather than reporting the first one that the linker picked up randomly.

In order to handle such errors, we don't need to wrap everything with
ErrorOr (thanks for David Blaikie for pointing this out!) Instead, we
can set a flag to record the fact that we found an error and keep it
going until it reaches a reasonable checkpoint.

This idea should be applicable to other places. For example, we can
ignore broken relocations and check for errors after visiting all relocs.

In this patch, I rename error to fatal, and introduce another version of
error which doesn't call exit. That function instead sets HasError to true.
Once HasError becomes true, it stays true, so that we know that there
was an error if it is true.

I think introducing a non-noreturn error reporting function is by itself
a good idea, and it looks to me that this also provides a gradual path
towards lld-as-a-library (or at least embed-lld-to-your-program) without
sacrificing code readability with lots of ErrorOr's.

Simon Atanasyan 56ab5f0289 [ELF][MIPS] Initial support of MIPS local GOT entries
Some MIPS relocation (for now R_MIPS_GOT16) requires creation of GOT
entries for symbol not included in the dynamic symbol table. They are
local symbols and non-local symbols with 'local' visibility. Local GOT
entries occupy continuous block between GOT header and regular GOT
entries.

The patch adds initial support for handling local GOT entries. The main
problem is allocating local GOT entries for local symbols. Such entries
should be initialized by high 16-bit of the symbol value. In ideal world
there should be no duplicated entries with the same values. But at the
moment of the `Writer::scanRelocs` call we do not know a value of the
symbol. In this patch we create new local GOT entry for each relocation
against local symbol, though we can exhaust GOT quickly. That needs to
be optimized later. When we calculate relocation we know a final symbol
value and request local GOT entry index. To do that we maintain map
between addresses and local GOT entry indexes. If we start to calculate
relocations in parallel we will have to serialize access to this map.

"System V Application Binary Interface Intel386 Architecture Processor Supplement Version 1.1" (https://github.com/hjl-tools/x86-psABI/wiki/intel386-psABI-1.1.pdf), p36 contains next calculation for R_386_GOT32: G + A - GOT.
SYSTEM V APPLICATION BINARY INTERFACE 4 (https://refspecs.linuxfoundation.org/elf/abi386-4.pdf, p78) tolds us its G + A - P.
Oracle docs (https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19455-01/816-0559/chapter6-26/index.html) says its should be G + A.

gold/bfd calculates it as "G + A - GOT", but GOT means the end of the GOT section.

Simon Atanasyan 09b3e3685f [ELF] MIPS paired R_MIPS_HI16/LO16 relocations support
Some MIPS relocations including `R_MIPS_HI16/R_MIPS_LO16` use combined
addends. Such addend is calculated using addends of both paired relocations.
Each `R_MIPS_HI16` relocation is paired with the next `R_MIPS_LO16`
relocation. ABI requires to compute such combined addend in case of REL
relocation record format only.

For details see p. 4-17 at
ftp://www.linux-mips.org/pub/linux/mips/doc/ABI/mipsabi.pdf

This patch implements lookup of the next paired relocation suing new
`InputSectionBase::findPairedRelocLocation` method. The primary
disadvantage of this approach is that we put MIPS specific logic into
the common code. The next disadvantage is that we lookup `R_MIPS_LO16`
for each `R_MIPS_HI16` relocation, while in fact multiple `R_MIPS_HI16`
might be paired with the single `R_MIPS_LO16`. From the other side
this way allows us to keep `MipsTargetInfo` class stateless and implement
later relocation handling in parallel.

This patch does not support `R_MIPS_HI16/R_MIPS_LO16` relocations against
`_gp_disp` symbol. In that case the relocations use a special formula for
the calculation. That will be implemented later.

George Rimar 21c0a7131b [ELF] - Lazy relocations support for x86 target.
Patch implements lazy relocations for x86.
One of features of x86 is that executable files and shared object files have separate procedure linkage tables. So patch implements both cases.

George Rimar d23970f778 [ELF/x86] Implemented R_386_TLS_LE_32, R_386_TLS_LE relocations.
This patch implements next relocations:
R_386_TLS_LE - Negative offset relative to static TLS (GNU version).
R_386_TLS_LE_32 - Offset relative to static TLS block.

These ones are created when using next code sequences:
* @tpoff - The operator must be used to compute an immediate value. The linker will report
an error if the referenced variable is not defined or it is not code for the executable
itself. No GOT entry is created in this case.
* @ntpoff Calculate the negative offset of the variable it is added to relative to the static TLS block.
The operator must be used to compute an immediate value. The linker will report
an error if the referenced variable is not defined or it is not code for the executable
itself. No GOT entry is created in this case.

George Rimar 1393477fd7 [ELF] - simplify Target interface, relocPointsToGot() removed.
https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19683-01/817-3677/chapter6-26/index.html says:
R_386_GOTPC
Resembles R_386_PC32, except that it uses the address of the global offset table in its calculation. The symbol referenced in this relocation normally is _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_, which also instructs the link-editor to create the global offset table.

Currently _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_ has value == zero. And we use GOT address to calculate the relocation. This patch does not changes that. It just removes the method which is used only for x86. So it is close to non functional change.

Michael J. Spencer 1e22561a57 [elf2] Add support for R_X86_64_TLSLD.
leaq symbol@tlsld(%rip), %rdi
call __tls_get_addr@plt

symbol@tlsld (R_X86_64_TLSLD) instructs the linker to generate a tls_index entry (two GOT slots) in the GOT for the entire module (shared object or executable) with an offset of 0. The symbol for this GOT entry doesn't matter (as long as it's either local to the module or null), and gold doesn't put a symbol in the dynamic R_X86_64_DTPMOD64 relocation for the GOT entry.

All other platforms defined in http://www.akkadia.org/drepper/tls.pdf except for Itanium use a similar model where global and local dynamic GOT entries take up 2 contiguous GOT slots, so we can handle this in a unified manner if we don't care about Itanium.

While scanning relocations we need to identify local dynamic relocations and generate a single tls_index entry in the GOT for the module and store the address of it somewhere so we can later statically resolve the offset for R_X86_64_TLSLD relocations. We also need to generate a R_X86_64_DTPMOD64 relocation in the RelaDyn relocation section.

This implementation is a bit hacky. It side steps the issue of GotSection and RelocationSection only handling SymbolBody entries by relying on a specific relocation type. The alternative to this seemed to be completely rewriting how GotSection and RelocationSection work, or using a different hacky signaling method.

Hal Finkel 6f97c2bc00 [ELF2] getLocalRelTarget should handle R_PPC64_TOC directly
R_PPC64_TOC does not have an associated symbol, but does have a non-zero VA
that target-specific code must compute using some non-trivial rule. We
handled this as a special case in PPC64TargetInfo::relocateOne, where
we knew to write this special address, but that did not work when creating shared
libraries. The special TOC address needs to be the subject of a
R_PPC64_RELATIVE relocation, and so we also need to know how to encode this
special address in the addend of that relocation.

Thus, some target-specific logic is necessary when creating R_PPC64_RELATIVE as
well. To solve this problem, we teach getLocalRelTarget to handle R_PPC64_TOC
as a special case. This allows us to remove the special case in
PPC64TargetInfo::relocateOne (simplifying code there), and naturally allows the
existing logic to do the right thing when creating associated R_PPC64_RELATIVE
relocations for shared libraries.

When I initially implemented PPC64TargetInfo::isRelRelative, I included a fixed

seems unwise in two respects: First, most PPC64 relocations are relative

are not appropriate for R_PPC64_RELATIVE (which writes a 64-bit absolute
address). Thus, back off, and include only those relocations for which we test
(or soon will), and are obviously appropriate for R_PPC64_RELATIVE.

This has turned out to be unnecessary, and while some ability to set VAStart
will be needed at some point, this is not clearly the right direction.

George Rimar 9fd8fcb5a4 This patch implements basic variant of lazy loading for x86_x64 and for X86 targets.
What was done:
1) .got.plt section is created for functions that requires PLT. .got.plt has 3 predefined empty entries now that are required for dynamic linker.
Also other new items created are configured to have correct jump to PLT[N].
2) PLT section now has PLT[0] entry, also others ones are configured to support PLT->GOT(.got.plt) calls.
3) Implemented .rel[a].plt sections (based on patch http://reviews.llvm.org/D13569).
4) Fixed plt relocations types (based on patch http://reviews.llvm.org/D13589).

NOTES:
The .plt.got zero entry is still empty now. According to ELF specification it should hold the address of the dynamic structure, referenced with the symbol
_DYNAMIC. The _DYNAMIC entry points to the .dynamic section which contains information used by the ELF interpreter to setup the binary.

Hal Finkel daedc12172 [ELF2/PPC64] Resolve local-call relocations using the correct function-descriptor values
Under PPC64 ELF v1 ABI, the symbols associated with each function name don't
point directly to the code in the .text section (or similar), but rather to a
function descriptor structure in a special data section named .opd. The
elements in the .opd structure include a pointer to the actual code, and a the
relevant TOC base value. Both of these are themselves set by relocations.

When we have a local call, we need the relevant relocation to refer directly to
the target code, not to the function-descriptor in the .opd section. Only when
we have a .plt stub do we care about the address of the .opd function
descriptor itself.

So we make a few changes here:

 1. Always write .opd first, so that its relocated data values are available
for later use when writing the text sections. Record a pointer to the .opd
    structure, and its corresponding buffer.

 2. When processing a relative branch relocation under ppc64, if the
destination points into the .opd section, read the code pointer out of the
function descriptor structure and use that instead.

This this, I can link, and run, a dynamically-compiled "hello world"
application on big-Endian PPC64/Linux (ELF v1 ABI) using lld.

Hal Finkel 87bbd5ffd4 [ELF2] Allow PPC64 to add the TOC-restore after .plt-based relocations
Under the PPC64 ELF ABI, functions that might call into other modules (and,
thus, need to load a different TOC base value into %r2), need to restore the
old value after the call. The old value is saved by the .plt code, and the
caller only needs to include a nop instruction after the call, which the linker
will transform into a TOC restore if necessary.

In order to do this the relocation handler needs two things:

 1. It needs to know whether the call instruction it is modifying is targeting
a .plt stub that will load a new TOC base value (necessitating a restore after
    the call).

 2. It needs to know where the buffer ends, so that it does not accidentally
run off the end of the buffer when looking for the 'nop' instruction after the
    call.

Given these two pieces of information, we can insert the restore instruction in
place of the following nop when necessary.

This was clearly wrong (thanks Rui for spotting), and I honestly would

wasn't (easily) able to craft a test that exposes the bad behavior.
Ideally, we would like to get tests of this kind for all relocations, but
at the time of writing, this is not true. So, for now just fix this bug
