Commit e66eed651f ("list: remove prefetching from regular list
iterators") removed the include of prefetch.h from list.h, which
uncovered several cases that had apparently relied on that rather
obscure header file dependency.
So this fixes things up a bit, using
grep -L linux/prefetch.h $(git grep -l '[^a-z_]prefetchw*(' -- '*.[ch]')
grep -L 'prefetchw*(' $(git grep -l 'linux/prefetch.h' -- '*.[ch]')
to guide us in finding files that either need <linux/prefetch.h>
inclusion, or have it despite not needing it.
There are more of them around (mostly network drivers), but this gets
many core ones.

mac_pton() parses MAC address in form XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX and only in that form.
mac_pton() doesn't dirty result until it's sure string representation is valid.
mac_pton() doesn't care about characters _after_ last octet,
it's up to caller to deal with it.
mac_pton() diverges from 0/-E return value convention.
Target usage:
if (!mac_pton(str, whatever->mac))
return -EINVAL;
/* ->mac being u8 [ETH_ALEN] is filled at this point. */
/* optionally check str[3 * ETH_ALEN - 1] for termination */

Pktgen doesn't generate number of frags requested.
Divide packet size by number of frags and fill that in every frags.
Example:
With packet size 1470, it generate only 11 frags. Initial frags
get lenght 706, 353, 177....so on. Last frag get divided by 2.
Now with this fix, each frags will get 78 bytes.

Idea is to add a prefetchw() call to prefetch the first cache line

It is not currently possible to instruct pktgen to use one selected tx queue.
When Robert added multiqueue support in commit 45b270f8, he added
an interval (queue_map_min, queue_map_max), and his code doesnt take
into account the case of min = max, to select one tx queue exactly.
I suspect a high performance setup on a eight txqueue device wants
to use exactly eight cpus, and assign one tx queue to each sender.
This patchs makes pktgen select the right tx queue, not the first one.

Rewrite inner loop to:
* account for delays better with less clock calls
* more accurate timing of delay:
- only delay if packet was successfully sent
- if delay is 100ns and it takes 10ns to build packet then
account for that

drivers have to use in their start_xmit() function, and use txq->trans_start

This can be done generically in core network, as suggested by David.
Some devices, (particularly loopback) dont need trans_start update, because
they dont have transmit watchdog. We could add a new device flag, or rely

Setting ->owner as done currently (pde->owner = THIS_MODULE) is racy
as correctly noted at bug #12454. Someone can lookup entry with NULL
->owner, thus not pinning enything, and release it later resulting
in module refcount underflow.
We can keep ->owner and supply it at registration time like ->proc_fops
and ->data.
But this leaves ->owner as easy-manipulative field (just one C assignment)
and somebody will forget to unpin previous/pin current module when
switching ->owner. ->proc_fops is declared as "const" which should give
some thoughts.
->read_proc/->write_proc were just fixed to not require ->owner for
protection.
rmmod'ed directories will be empty and return "." and ".." -- no harm.
And directories with tricky enough readdir and lookup shouldn't be modular.
We definitely don't want such modular code.
Removing ->owner will also make PDE smaller.
So, let's nuke it.
Kudos to Jeff Layton for reminding about this, let's say, oversight.

With the new multi-queue transmit code, it is possible to accidentally
make pktgen pick a non-existing tx queue simply by using a stale

Sofar far pktgen have had a restriction to only use one device per kernel
thread. With the new multiqueue architecture this is no longer adequate.
The patch below is an effort to remove this by in pktgen configuration
adding a tag to the device name a la eth0@0 etc. The tag is used for
usual device config just as before. Also a new flag is introduced to mirror
queue_map with sending threads smp_processor_id() QUEUE_MAP_CPU.
An example: We use 4 CPU's to send to one 10g interface (eth0)
and we use the new tagging to send a mix of packet sizes, 64, 576 and
1500 bytes. Also we use TX queues according to smp_processor_id()

When support for multiple TX queues were added, the
netif_tx_lock() routines we converted to iterate over
all TX queues and grab each queue's spinlock.
This causes heartburn for lockdep and it's not a healthy
thing to do with lots of TX queues anyways.

This effectively "flips the switch" by making the core networking
and multiqueue-aware drivers use the new TX multiqueue structures.
Non-multiqueue drivers need no changes. The interfaces they use such
as netif_stop_queue() degenerate into an operation on TX queue zero.
So everything "just works" for them.
Code that really wants to do "X" to all TX queues now invokes a
routine that does so, such as netif_tx_wake_all_queues(),
netif_tx_stop_all_queues(), etc.
pktgen and netpoll required a little bit more surgery than the others.
In particular the pktgen changes, whilst functional, could be largely
improved. The initial check in pktgen_xmit() will sometimes check the
wrong queue, which is mostly harmless. The thing to do is probably to
invoke fill_packet() earlier.
The bulk of the netpoll changes is to make the code operate solely on
the TX queue indicated by by the SKB queue mapping.
Setting of the SKB queue mapping is entirely confined inside of
net/core/dev.c:dev_pick_tx(). If we end up needing any kind of
special semantics (drops, for example) it will be implemented here.
Finally, we now have a "real_num_tx_queues" which is where the driver
indicates how many TX queues are actually active.

This patch adds a new field to xfrm states called inner_mode. The existing
mode object is renamed to outer_mode.
This is the first part of an attempt to fix inter-family transforms. As it
is we always use the outer family when determining which mode to use. As a
result we may end up shoving IPv4 packets into netfilter6 and vice versa.
What we really want is to use the inner family for the first part of outbound
processing and the outer family for the second part. For inbound processing
we'd use the opposite pairing.
I've also added a check to prevent silly combinations such as transport mode
with inter-family transforms.

This patch makes most of the generic device layer network
namespace safe. This patch makes dev_base_head a
network namespace variable, and then it picks up
a few associated variables. The functions:
dev_getbyhwaddr
dev_getfirsthwbytype
dev_get_by_flags
dev_get_by_name
__dev_get_by_name
dev_get_by_index
__dev_get_by_index
dev_ioctl
dev_ethtool
dev_load
wireless_process_ioctl
were modified to take a network namespace argument, and
deal with it.
vlan_ioctl_set and brioctl_set were modified so their
hooks will receive a network namespace argument.
So basically anthing in the core of the network stack that was
affected to by the change of dev_base was modified to handle
multiple network namespaces. The rest of the network stack was
simply modified to explicitly use &init_net the initial network
namespace. This can be fixed when those components of the network
stack are modified to handle multiple network namespaces.
For now the ifindex generator is left global.
Fundametally ifindex numbers are per namespace, or else
we will have corner case problems with migration when
we get that far.
At the same time there are assumptions in the network stack
that the ifindex of a network device won't change. Making
the ifindex number global seems a good compromise until
the network stack can cope with ifindex changes when
you change namespaces, and the like.

Every user of the network device notifiers is either a protocol
stack or a pseudo device. If a protocol stack that does not have
support for multiple network namespaces receives an event for a
device that is not in the initial network namespace it quite possibly
can get confused and do the wrong thing.
To avoid problems until all of the protocol stacks are converted
this patch modifies all netdev event handlers to ignore events on
devices that are not in the initial network namespace.
As the rest of the code is made network namespace aware these
checks can be removed.

This patch makes /proc/net per network namespace. It modifies the global
variables proc_net and proc_net_stat to be per network namespace.
The proc_net file helpers are modified to take a network namespace argument,
and all of their callers are fixed to pass &init_net for that argument.
This ensures that all of the /proc/net files are only visible and
usable in the initial network namespace until the code behind them
has been updated to be handle multiple network namespaces.
Making /proc/net per namespace is necessary as at least some files
in /proc/net depend upon the set of network devices which is per
network namespace, and even more files in /proc/net have contents
that are relevant to a single network namespace.

Currently, the freezer treats all tasks as freezable, except for the kernel
threads that explicitly set the PF_NOFREEZE flag for themselves. This
approach is problematic, since it requires every kernel thread to either
set PF_NOFREEZE explicitly, or call try_to_freeze(), even if it doesn't
care for the freezing of tasks at all.
It seems better to only require the kernel threads that want to or need to
be frozen to use some freezer-related code and to remove any
freezer-related code from the other (nonfreezable) kernel threads, which is
done in this patch.
The patch causes all kernel threads to be nonfreezable by default (ie. to
have PF_NOFREEZE set by default) and introduces the set_freezable()
function that should be called by the freezable kernel threads in order to
unset PF_NOFREEZE. It also makes all of the currently freezable kernel
threads call set_freezable(), so it shouldn't cause any (intentional)
change of behaviour to appear. Additionally, it updates documentation to
describe the freezing of tasks more accurately.

I have used it for stress test a bridge and seems ok to me.
Unfortunately I have no access to net-2.6.x git tree so the diff is against
2.6.17.13.

Various drivers use xmit_lock internally to synchronise with their
transmission routines. They do so without setting xmit_lock_owner.
This is fine as long as netpoll is not in use.
With netpoll it is possible for deadlocks to occur if xmit_lock_owner
isn't set. This is because if a printk occurs while xmit_lock is held
and xmit_lock_owner is not set can cause netpoll to attempt to take
xmit_lock recursively.
While it is possible to resolve this by getting netpoll to use
trylock, it is suboptimal because netpoll's sole objective is to
maximise the chance of getting the printk out on the wire. So
delaying or dropping the message is to be avoided as much as possible.
So the only alternative is to always set xmit_lock_owner. The
following patch does this by introducing the netif_tx_lock family of
functions that take care of setting/unsetting xmit_lock_owner.
I renamed xmit_lock to _xmit_lock to indicate that it should not be
used directly. I didn't provide irq versions of the netif_tx_lock
functions since xmit_lock is meant to be a BH-disabling lock.
This is pretty much a straight text substitution except for a small
bug fix in winbond. It currently uses
netif_stop_queue/spin_unlock_wait to stop transmission. This is
unsafe as an IRQ can potentially wake up the queue. So it is safer to
use netif_tx_disable.
The hamradio bits used spin_lock_irq but it is unnecessary as
xmit_lock must never be taken in an IRQ handler.

As suggested by Arnaldo, this patch replaces the
thread_lock()/thread_unlock() by directly calls to
mutex_lock()/mutex_unlock().
This change makes the code a bit more readable, and the direct calls
are used everywhere in the kernel.

will be successfully loaded.

and also freeing all the resources allocated. It also prints a warning if a

There's a race in pktgen which can lead to a double
free of a pktgen_dev's skb. If a worker thread is in
the midst of doing fill_packet(), and the controlling
thread gets a "stop" message, the already freed skb
can be freed once again in pktgen_stop_device(). This
patch gives all responsibility for cleaning up a
pktgen_dev's skb to the associated worker thread.

static variables should not be explicitly initialised to 0. This causes
them to be placed in .data instead of .bss. This patch de-initialises 3
static variables in net/core/pktgen.c.
There are approximately 800 more such variables in the source tree
(2.6.15rc5). If there is more interrest I'd be willing to track down the
rest of these as well and de-initialise them as well.

The code to handle the /proc interface can be cleaned up in several places:
* use seq_file for read
* don't need to remember all the filenames separately
* use for_online_cpu's
* don't vmalloc a buffer for small command from user.

In 'net' change the explicit use of for-loops and NR_CPUS into the
general for_each_cpu() or for_each_online_cpu() constructs, as
appropriate. This widens the scope of potential future optimizations
of the general constructs, as well as takes advantage of the existing
optimizations of first_cpu() and next_cpu(), which is advantageous
when the true CPU count is much smaller than NR_CPUS.

The following patch renames __in_dev_get() to __in_dev_get_rtnl() and
introduces __in_dev_get_rcu() to cover the second case.
1) RCU with refcnt should use in_dev_get().
2) RCU without refcnt should use __in_dev_get_rcu().
3) All others must hold RTNL and use __in_dev_get_rtnl().
There is one exception in net/ipv4/route.c which is in fact a pre-existing
race condition. I've marked it as such so that we remember to fix it.

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.
Let it rip!
