The new nmi_watchdog (which uses the perf event subsystem) is very
similar in structure to the softlockup detector. Using Ingo's
suggestion, I combined the two functionalities into one file:
kernel/watchdog.c.
Now both the nmi_watchdog (or hardlockup detector) and softlockup
detector sit on top of the perf event subsystem, which is run every
60 seconds or so to see if there are any lockups.
To detect hardlockups, cpus not responding to interrupts, I
implemented an hrtimer that runs 5 times for every perf event
overflow event. If that stops counting on a cpu, then the cpu is
most likely in trouble.
To detect softlockups, tasks not yielding to the scheduler, I used the
previous kthread idea that now gets kicked every time the hrtimer fires.
If the kthread isn't being scheduled neither is anyone else and the
warning is printed to the console.
I tested this on x86_64 and both the softlockup and hardlockup paths
work.

Instead of keeping SysRq support inside of legacy keyboard driver split
it out into a separate input handler (filter). This stops most SysRq input
events from leaking into evdev clients (some events, such as first SysRq
scancode - not keycode - event, are still leaked into both legacy keyboard
and evdev).

In NOMMU mode clamp dac_mmap_min_addr to zero to cause the tests on it to be
skipped by the compiler. We do this as the minimum mmap address doesn't make
any sense in NOMMU mode.
mmap_min_addr and round_hint_to_min() can be discarded entirely in NOMMU mode.

This patch derives a "nodes_allowed" node mask from the numa mempolicy of
the task modifying the number of persistent huge pages to control the
allocation, freeing and adjusting of surplus huge pages when the pool page
count is modified via the new sysctl or sysfs attribute
"nr_hugepages_mempolicy". The nodes_allowed mask is derived as follows:
* For "default" [NULL] task mempolicy, a NULL nodemask_t pointer
is produced. This will cause the hugetlb subsystem to use
node_online_map as the "nodes_allowed". This preserves the
behavior before this patch.
* For "preferred" mempolicy, including explicit local allocation,
a nodemask with the single preferred node will be produced.
"local" policy will NOT track any internode migrations of the
task adjusting nr_hugepages.
* For "bind" and "interleave" policy, the mempolicy's nodemask
will be used.
* Other than to inform the construction of the nodes_allowed node
mask, the actual mempolicy mode is ignored. That is, all modes
behave like interleave over the resulting nodes_allowed mask
with no "fallback".

about the implications of this patch.

Of course, we only have nr_hugepages_mempolicy with the patch,
but with default mempolicy, nr_hugepages_mempolicy behaves the
same as nr_hugepages.
Applying mempolicy--e.g., with numactl [using '-m' a.k.a.
'--membind' because it allows multiple nodes to be specified
and it's easy to type]--we can allocate huge pages on
individual nodes or sets of nodes. So, starting from the
condition above, with 8 huge pages per node, add 8 more to
node 2 using:
numactl -m 2 sysctl vm.nr_hugepages_mempolicy=40
This yields:
Node 0 HugePages_Total: 8
Node 1 HugePages_Total: 8
Node 2 HugePages_Total: 16
Node 3 HugePages_Total: 8
The incremental 8 huge pages were restricted to node 2 by the
specified mempolicy.
Similarly, we can use mempolicy to free persistent huge pages
from specified nodes:

The normalized values are also recalculated in case the scaling factor
changes.
This patch updates the internally used scheduler tuning values that are
normalized to one cpu in case a user sets new values via sysfs.
Together with patch 2 of this series this allows to let user configured
values scale (or not) to cpu add/remove events taking place later.

As scaling now takes place on all kind of cpu add/remove events a user
that configures values via proc should be able to configure if his set
values are still rescaled or kept whatever happens.
As the comments state that log2 was just a second guess that worked the
interface is not just designed for on/off, but to choose a scaling type.
Currently this allows none, log and linear, but more important it allwos
us to keep the interface even if someone has an even better idea how to
scale the values.

The ctl_name and strategy fields are unused, now that sys_sysctl
is a compatibility wrapper around /proc/sys. No longer looking
at them in the generic code is effectively what we are doing
now and provides the guarantee that during further cleanups
we can just remove references to those fields and everything
will work ok.

Introduce core pipe limiting sysctl.
Since we can dump cores to pipe, rather than directly to the filesystem,
we create a condition in which a user can create a very high load on the
system simply by running bad applications.
If the pipe reader specified in core_pattern is poorly written, we can
have lots of ourstandig resources and processes in the system.
This sysctl introduces an ability to limit that resource consumption.
core_pipe_limit defines how many in-flight dumps may be run in parallel,
dumps beyond this value are skipped and a note is made in the kernel log.
A special value of 0 in core_pipe_limit denotes unlimited core dumps may
be handled (this is the default value).

When syslog is not possible, at the same time there's no serial/net
console available, it will be hard to read the printk messages. For
example oops/panic/warning messages in shutdown phase.
Add a printk delay feature, we can make each printk message delay some
milliseconds.
Setting the delay by proc/sysctl interface: /proc/sys/kernel/printk_delay

Bye-bye Performance Counters, welcome Performance Events!
In the past few months the perfcounters subsystem has grown out its
initial role of counting hardware events, and has become (and is
becoming) a much broader generic event enumeration, reporting, logging,
monitoring, analysis facility.
Naming its core object 'perf_counter' and naming the subsystem
'perfcounters' has become more and more of a misnomer. With pending
code like hw-breakpoints support the 'counter' name is less and
less appropriate.
All in one, we've decided to rename the subsystem to 'performance
events' and to propagate this rename through all fields, variables
and API names. (in an ABI compatible fashion)
The word 'event' is also a bit shorter than 'counter' - which makes
it slightly more convenient to write/handle as well.
Thanks goes to Stephane Eranian who first observed this misnomer and
suggested a rename.
User-space tooling and ABI compatibility is not affected - this patch
should be function-invariant. (Also, defconfigs were not touched to
keep the size down.)

used by anyone who has pending perfcounters patches - it converts
a Linux kernel tree over to the new naming. We tried to time this
change to the point in time where the amount of pending patches
is the smallest: the end of the merge window.
Namespace clashes were fixed up in a preparatory patch - and some
stylistic fallout will be fixed up in a subsequent patch.
( NOTE: 'counters' are still the proper terminology when we deal
with hardware registers - and these sed scripts are a bit
over-eager in renaming them. I've undone some of that, but
in case there's something left where 'counter' would be
better than 'event' we can undo that on an individual basis
instead of touching an otherwise nicely automated patch. )

Add the high level memory handler that poisons pages
that got corrupted by hardware (typically by a two bit flip in a DIMM
or a cache) on the Linux level. The goal is to prevent everyone
from accessing these pages in the future.
This done at the VM level by marking a page hwpoisoned
and doing the appropriate action based on the type of page
it is.
The code that does this is portable and lives in mm/memory-failure.c
To quote the overview comment:
High level machine check handler. Handles pages reported by the
hardware as being corrupted usually due to a 2bit ECC memory or cache
failure.
This focuses on pages detected as corrupted in the background.
When the current CPU tries to consume corruption the currently
running process can just be killed directly instead. This implies
that if the error cannot be handled for some reason it's safe to
just ignore it because no corruption has been consumed yet. Instead
when that happens another machine check will happen.
Handles page cache pages in various states. The tricky part
here is that we can access any page asynchronous to other VM
users, because memory failures could happen anytime and anywhere,
possibly violating some of their assumptions. This is why this code
has to be extremely careful. Generally it tries to use normal locking
rules, as in get the standard locks, even if that means the
error handling takes potentially a long time.
Some of the operations here are somewhat inefficient and have non
linear algorithmic complexity, because the data structures have not
been optimized for this case. This is in particular the case
for the mapping from a vma to a process. Since this case is expected
to be rare we hope we can get away with this.
There are in principle two strategies to kill processes on poison:
- just unmap the data and wait for an actual reference before
killing
- kill as soon as corruption is detected.
Both have advantages and disadvantages and should be used
in different situations. Right now both are implemented and can
be switched with a new sysctl vm.memory_failure_early_kill
The default is early kill.
The patch does some rmap data structure walking on its own to collect
processes to kill. This is unusual because normally all rmap data structure
knowledge is in rmap.c only. I put it here for now to keep
everything together and rmap knowledge has been seeping out anyways

This borrows some code from NAPI and implements a polled completion
mode for block devices. The idea is the same as NAPI - instead of
doing the command completion when the irq occurs, schedule a dedicated
softirq in the hopes that we will complete more IO when the iopoll
handler is invoked. Devices have a budget of commands assigned, and will
stay in polled mode as long as they continue to consume their budget
from the iopoll softirq handler. If they do not, the device is set back
to interrupt completion mode.
This patch holds the core bits for blk-iopoll, device driver support
sold separately.

Set child_runs_first default to off.
It hurts 'optimal' make -j<NR_CPUS> workloads as make jobs
get preempted by child tasks, reducing parallelism.
Note, this patch might make existing races in user
applications more prominent than before - so breakages
might be bisected to this commit.
Child-runs-first is broken on SMP to begin with, and we
already had it off briefly in v2.6.23 so most of the
offenders ought to be fixed. Would be nice not to revert
this commit but fix those apps finally ...

Currently SELinux enforcement of controls on the ability to map low memory
is determined by the mmap_min_addr tunable. This patch causes SELinux to
ignore the tunable and instead use a seperate Kconfig option specific to how
much space the LSM should protect.
The tunable will now only control the need for CAP_SYS_RAWIO and SELinux
permissions will always protect the amount of low memory designated by
CONFIG_LSM_MMAP_MIN_ADDR.
This allows users who need to disable the mmap_min_addr controls (usual reason
being they run WINE as a non-root user) to do so and still have SELinux
controls preventing confined domains (like a web server) from being able to
map some area of low memory.

This patch introduces a new sysctl:
/proc/sys/kernel/panic_on_io_nmi
which defaults to 0 (off).
When enabled, the kernel panics when the kernel receives an NMI
caused by an IO error.
The IO error triggered NMI indicates a serious system
condition, which could result in IO data corruption. Rather
than contiuing, panicing and dumping might be a better choice,
so one can figure out what's causing the IO error.
This could be especially important to companies running IO
intensive applications where corruption must be avoided, e.g. a
bank's databases.

request of a large database vendor, for their users. ]

General description: kmemcheck is a patch to the linux kernel that
detects use of uninitialized memory. It does this by trapping every
read and write to memory that was allocated dynamically (e.g. using
kmalloc()). If a memory address is read that has not previously been
written to, a message is printed to the kernel log.
Thanks to Andi Kleen for the set_memory_4k() solution.

This patch removes the dependency of mmap_min_addr on CONFIG_SECURITY.
It also sets a default mmap_min_addr of 4096.
mmapping of addresses below 4096 will only be possible for processes
with CAP_SYS_RAWIO.

Introduce a generic per counter interrupt throttle.
This uses the perf_counter_overflow() quick disable to throttle a specific
counter when its going too fast when a pmu->unthrottle() method is provided
which can undo the quick disable.
Power needs to implement both the quick disable and the unthrottle method.

Work is progressing to switch away from pdflush as the process backing
for flushing out dirty data. So it seems pointless to add more knobs
to control pdflush threads. The original author of the patch did not
have any specific use cases for adding the knobs, so we can easily
revert this before 2.6.30 to avoid having to maintain this API
forever.

A long ago, in days of yore, it all began with a god named Thor.
There were vikings and boats and some plans for a Linux kernel
header. Unfortunately, a single 8-bit field was used for bootloader
type and version. This has generally worked without *too* much pain,
but we're getting close to flat running out of ID fields.
Add extension fields for both type and version. The type will be
extended if it the old field is 0xE; the version is a simple MSB
extension.
Keep /proc/sys/kernel/bootloader_type containing
(type << 4) + (ver & 0xf) for backwards compatiblity, but also add
/proc/sys/kernel/bootloader_version which contains the full version
number.

Add /proc entries to give the admin the ability to control the minimum and
maximum number of pdflush threads. This allows finer control of pdflush
on both large and small machines.
The rationale is simply one size does not fit all. Admins on large and/or
small systems may want to tune the min/max pdflush thread count to best
suit their needs. Right now the min/max is hardcoded to 2/8. While
probably a fair estimate for smaller machines, large machines with large
numbers of CPUs and large numbers of filesystems/block devices may benefit
from larger numbers of threads working on different block devices.
Even if the background flushing algorithm is radically changed, it is
still likely that multiple threads will be involved and admins would still
desire finer control on the min/max other than to have to recompile the
kernel.
The patch adds '/proc/sys/vm/nr_pdflush_threads_min' and
'/proc/sys/vm/nr_pdflush_threads_max' with r/w permissions.
The minimum value for nr_pdflush_threads_min is 1 and the maximum value is
the current value of nr_pdflush_threads_max. This minimum is required
since additional thread creation is performed in a pdflush thread itself.
The minimum value for nr_pdflush_threads_max is the current value of
nr_pdflush_threads_min and the maximum value can be 1000.
Documentation/sysctl/vm.txt is also updated.

configuration dependencies, yet it's not worth making the simple

Make the slow work pool configurable through /proc/sys/kernel/slow-work.
(*) /proc/sys/kernel/slow-work/min-threads
The minimum number of threads that should be in the pool as long as it is
in use. This may be anywhere between 2 and max-threads.
(*) /proc/sys/kernel/slow-work/max-threads
The maximum number of threads that should in the pool. This may be
anywhere between min-threads and 255 or NR_CPUS * 2, whichever is greater.
(*) /proc/sys/kernel/slow-work/vslow-percentage
The percentage of active threads in the pool that may be used to execute
very slow work items. This may be between 1 and 99. The resultant number
is bounded to between 1 and one fewer than the number of active threads.
This ensures there is always at least one thread that can process very
slow work items, and always at least one thread that won't.

Implement a sysctl file that disables module-loading system-wide since
there is no longer a viable way to remove CAP_SYS_MODULE after the system
bounding capability set was removed in 2.6.25.
Value can only be set to "1", and is tested only if standard capability
checks allow CAP_SYS_MODULE. Given existing /dev/mem protections, this
should allow administrators a one-way method to block module loading
after initial boot-time module loading has finished.

On i386, HZ=1000, jiffies_to_clock_t() converts time in a somewhat strange
way from the user's point of view:

So, we have 5000 jiffies converted to only 499 clock ticks and reported
back.

Keeping in-kernel variable in units passed from userspace will fix issue
of course, but this probably won't be right for every sysctl.

CONFIG_SOFTLOCKUP=y || CONFIG_DETECT_HUNG_TASKS=y is now the only user
of the 'one' constant in kernel/sysctl.c. Move it to the softlockup
block of constants.
This fixes a GCC warning.

We need to pass an unsigned long as the minimum, because it gets casted
to an unsigned long in the sysctl handler. If we pass an int, we'll
access four more bytes on 64bit arches, resulting in a random minimum
value.

Often the cause of kernel unaligned access warnings is not
obvious from just the ip displayed in the warning. This adds
the option via proc to dump the stack in addition to the warning.
The default is off (just display the 1 line warning). To enable
the stack to be shown: echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/unaligned-dump-stack

At run-time, if softlockup_thresh is changed to a much lower value,
touch_timestamp is likely to be much older than the new softlock_thresh.
This will cause a false softlockup to be detected. If softlockup_panic
is enabled, the system will panic.
The fix is to touch all watchdogs before changing softlockup_thresh.

NOMMU mmap allocates a piece of memory for an mmap that's rounded up in size to
the nearest power-of-2 number of pages. Currently it then discards the excess
pages back to the page allocator, making that memory available for use by other
things. This can, however, cause greater amount of fragmentation.
To counter this, a sysctl is added in order to fine-tune the trimming
behaviour. The default behaviour remains to trim pages aggressively, while
this can either be disabled completely or set to a higher page-granular
watermark in order to have finer-grained control.

This change introduces two new sysctls to /proc/sys/vm:
dirty_background_bytes and dirty_bytes.
dirty_background_bytes is the counterpart to dirty_background_ratio and
dirty_bytes is the counterpart to dirty_ratio.
With growing memory capacities of individual machines, it's no longer
sufficient to specify dirty thresholds as a percentage of the amount of
dirtyable memory over the entire system.
dirty_background_bytes and dirty_bytes specify quantities of memory, in
bytes, that represent the dirty limits for the entire system. If either
of these values is set, its value represents the amount of dirty memory
that is needed to commence either background or direct writeback.
When a `bytes' or `ratio' file is written, its counterpart becomes a
function of the written value. For example, if dirty_bytes is written to
be 8096, 8K of memory is required to commence direct writeback.
dirty_ratio is then functionally equivalent to 8K / the amount of
dirtyable memory:
dirtyable_memory = free pages + mapped pages + file cache
dirty_background_bytes = dirty_background_ratio * dirtyable_memory
-or-
dirty_background_ratio = dirty_background_bytes / dirtyable_memory
AND
dirty_bytes = dirty_ratio * dirtyable_memory
-or-
dirty_ratio = dirty_bytes / dirtyable_memory
Only one of dirty_background_bytes and dirty_background_ratio may be
specified at a time, and only one of dirty_bytes and dirty_ratio may be
specified. When one sysctl is written, the other appears as 0 when read.
The `bytes' files operate on a page size granularity since dirty limits
are compared with ZVC values, which are in page units.
Prior to this change, the minimum dirty_ratio was 5 as implemented by
get_dirty_limits() although /proc/sys/vm/dirty_ratio would show any user
written value between 0 and 100. This restriction is maintained, but
dirty_bytes has a lower limit of only one page.
Also prior to this change, the dirty_background_ratio could not equal or
exceed dirty_ratio. This restriction is maintained in addition to
restricting dirty_background_bytes. If either background threshold equals
or exceeds that of the dirty threshold, it is implicitly set to half the
dirty threshold.

Fixed up trivial conflict in scripts/recordmcount.pl due to SH bits
being already partly merged by the SH merge.
Impact: enhancement to stack tracer
The stack tracer currently is either on when configured in or
off when it is not. It can not be disabled when it is configured on.
(besides disabling the function tracer that it uses)
This patch adds a way to enable or disable the stack tracer at
run time. It defaults off on bootup, but a kernel parameter 'stacktrace'
has been added to enable it on bootup.
A new sysctl has been added "kernel.stack_tracer_enabled" to let
the user enable or disable the stack tracer at run time.

Add a sysctl to tweak the RSS limit used to decide when to grow
the TSB for an address space.
In order to avoid expensive divides and multiplies only simply
positive and negative powers of two are supported.
The function computed takes the number of TSB translations that will
fit at one time in the TSB of a given size, and either adds or
subtracts a percentage of entries. This final value is the
RSS limit.

It has been thought that the per-user file descriptors limit would also
limit the resources that a normal user can request via the epoll
interface. Vegard Nossum reported a very simple program (a modified
version attached) that can make a normal user to request a pretty large
amount of kernel memory, well within the its maximum number of fds. To
solve such problem, default limits are now imposed, and /proc based
configuration has been introduced. A new directory has been created,
named /proc/sys/fs/epoll/ and inside there, there are two configuration
points:
max_user_instances = Maximum number of devices - per user
max_user_watches = Maximum number of "watched" fds - per user
The current default for "max_user_watches" limits the memory used by epoll
to store "watches", to 1/32 of the amount of the low RAM. As example, a
256MB 32bit machine, will have "max_user_watches" set to roughly 90000.
That should be enough to not break existing heavy epoll users. The
default value for "max_user_instances" is set to 128, that should be
enough too.
This also changes the userspace, because a new error code can now come out
from EPOLL_CTL_ADD (-ENOSPC). The EMFILE from epoll_create() was already
listed, so that should be ok.

Wrap access to task credentials so that they can be separated more easily from
the task_struct during the introduction of COW creds.
Change most current->(|e|s|fs)[ug]id to current_(|e|s|fs)[ug]id().
Change some task->e?[ug]id to task_e?[ug]id(). In some places it makes more
sense to use RCU directly rather than a convenient wrapper; these will be
addressed by later patches.

Impact: add (default-off) dump-trace-on-oops flag
Currently, ftrace is set up to dump its contents to the console if the
kernel panics or oops. This can be annoying if you have trace data in
the buffers and you experience an oops, but the trace data is old or
static.
Usually when you want ftrace to dump its contents is when you are debugging
your system and you have set up ftrace to trace the events leading to
an oops.
This patch adds a control variable called "ftrace_dump_on_oops" that will
enable the ftrace dump to console on oops. This variable is default off
but a developer can enable it either through the kernel command line
by adding "ftrace_dump_on_oops" or at run time by setting (or disabling)
/proc/sys/kernel/ftrace_dump_on_oops.

This patch adds a function to scan individual or all zones' unevictable
lists and move any pages that have become evictable onto the respective
zone's inactive list, where shrink_inactive_list() will deal with them.
Adds sysctl to scan all nodes, and per node attributes to individual
nodes' zones.
Kosaki: If evictable page found in unevictable lru when write
/proc/sys/vm/scan_unevictable_pages, print filename and file offset of
these pages.

I noticed that tg_shares_up() unconditionally takes rq-locks for all cpus
in the sched_domain. This hurts.
We need the rq-locks whenever we change the weight of the per-cpu group sched
entities. To allevate this a little, only change the weight when the new
weight is at least shares_thresh away from the old value.
This avoids the rq-lock for the top level entries, since those will never
be re-weighted, and fuzzes the lower level entries a little to gain performance
in semi-stable situations.

This patchs adds the CONFIG_AIO option which allows to remove support
for asynchronous I/O operations, that are not necessarly used by
applications, particularly on embedded devices. As this is a
size-reduction option, it depends on CONFIG_EMBEDDED. It allows to
save ~7 kilobytes of kernel code/data:

It's somewhat unlikely that it happens, but right now a race window
between interrupts or machine checks or oopses could corrupt the tainted
bitmap because it is modified in a non atomic fashion.
Convert the taint variable to an unsigned long and use only atomic bit
operations on it.
Unfortunately this means the intvec sysctl functions cannot be used on it
anymore.
It turned out the taint sysctl handler could actually be simplified a bit
(since it only increases capabilities) so this patch actually removes
code.

This patch adds the CONFIG_FILE_LOCKING option which allows to remove
support for advisory locks. With this patch enabled, the flock()
system call, the F_GETLK, F_SETLK and F_SETLKW operations of fcntl()
and NFS support are disabled. These features are not necessarly needed
on embedded systems. It allows to save ~11 Kb of kernel code and data:

In a sense, that's the heart of the series. It's based on the following
property of the trees we are actually asked to add: they can be split into
stem that is already covered by registered trees and crown that is entirely
new. IOW, if a/b and a/c/d are introduced by our tree, then a/c is also
introduced by it.
That allows to associate tree and table entry with each node in the union;
while directory nodes might be covered by many trees, only one will cover
the node by its crown. And that will allow much saner logics for /proc/sys
in the next patches. This patch introduces the data structures needed to
keep track of that.
When adding a sysctl table, we find a "parent" one. Which is to say,
find the deepest node on its stem that already is present in one of the
tables from our table set or its ancestor sets. That table will be our
parent and that node in it - attachment point. Add our table to list
anchored in parent, have it refer the parent and contents of attachment
point. Also remember where its crown lives.

Refcount the sucker; instead of freeing it by the end of unregistration
just drop the refcount and free only when it hits zero. Make sure that
we _always_ make ->unregistering non-NULL in start_unregistering().
That allows anybody to get a reference to such puppy, preventing its
freeing and reuse. It does *not* block unregistration. Anybody who
holds such a reference can
* try to grab a "use" reference (ctl_head_grab()); that will
succeeds if and only if it hadn't entered unregistration yet. If it
succeeds, we can use it in all normal ways until we release the "use"
reference (with ctl_head_finish()). Note that this relies on having
->unregistering become non-NULL in all cases when one starts to unregister
the sucker.
* keep pointers to ctl_table entries; they *can* be freed if
the entire thing is unregistered. However, if ctl_head_grab() succeeds,
we know that unregistration had not happened (and will not happen until
ctl_head_finish()) and such pointers can be used safely.
IOW, now we can have inodes under /proc/sys keep references to ctl_table
entries, protecting them with references to ctl_table_header and
grabbing the latter for the duration of operations that require access
to ctl_table. That won't cause deadlocks, since unregistration will not
be stopped by mere keeping a reference to ctl_table_header.

New object: set of sysctls [currently - root and per-net-ns].
Contains: pointer to parent set, list of tables and "should I see this set?"
method (->is_seen(set)).
Current lists of tables are subsumed by that; net-ns contains such a beast.
->lookup() for ctl_table_root returns pointer to ctl_table_set instead of
that to ->list of that ctl_table_set.

All ratelimit user use same jiffies and burst params, so some messages
(callbacks) will be lost.
For example:
a call printk_ratelimit(5 * HZ, 1)
b call printk_ratelimit(5 * HZ, 1) before the 5*HZ timeout of a, then b will
will be supressed.
- rewrite __ratelimit, and use a ratelimit_state as parameter. Thanks for
hints from andrew.
- Add WARN_ON_RATELIMIT, update rcupreempt.h
- remove __printk_ratelimit
- use __ratelimit in net_ratelimit

Add basic support for more than one hstate in hugetlbfs. This is the key
to supporting multiple hugetlbfs page sizes at once.
- Rather than a single hstate, we now have an array, with an iterator
- default_hstate continues to be the struct hstate which we use by default
- Add functions for architectures to register new hstates

We found that the affine wakeup code needs rather accurate load figures
to be effective. The trouble is that updating the load figures is fairly
expensive with group scheduling. Therefore ratelimit the updating.

This patch re-institutes the ability to build rcutorture directly into
the Linux kernel. The reason that this capability was removed was that
this could result in your kernel being pretty much useless, as rcutorture
would be running starting from early boot. This problem has been avoided
by (1) making rcutorture run only three seconds of every six by default,
(2) adding a CONFIG_RCU_TORTURE_TEST_RUNNABLE that permits rcutorture
to be quiesced at boot time, and (3) adding a sysctl in /proc named
/proc/sys/kernel/rcutorture_runnable that permits rcutorture to be
quiesced and unquiesced when built into the kernel.
Please note that this /proc file is -not- available when rcutorture
is built as a module. Please also note that to get the earlier
take-no-prisoners behavior, you must use the boot command line to set
rcutorture's "stutter" parameter to zero.
The rcutorture quiescing mechanism is currently quite crude: loops
in each rcutorture process that poll a global variable once per tick.
Suggestions for improvement are welcome. The default action will
be to reduce the polling rate to a few times per second.

allow users to configure the softlockup detector to generate a panic
instead of a warning message.
high-availability systems might opt for this strict method (combined
with panic_timeout= boot option/sysctl), instead of generating
softlockup warnings ad infinitum.
also, automated tests work better if the system reboots reliably (into
a safe kernel) in case of a lockup.
The full spectrum of configurability is supported: boot option, sysctl
option and Kconfig option.

This patch adds back the sysctl ftrace_enabled. This time it is
defaulted to on, if DYNAMIC_FTRACE is configured. When ftrace_enabled
is disabled, the ftrace function is set to the stub return.
If DYNAMIC_FTRACE is also configured, on ftrace_enabled = 0,
the registered ftrace functions will all be set to jmps, but no more
new calls to ftrace recording (used to find the ftrace calling sites)
will be called.

When reading from/writing to some table, a root, which this table came from,
may affect this table's permissions, depending on who is working with the
table.
The core hunk is at the bottom of this patch. All the rest is just pushing
the ctl_table_root argument up to the sysctl_perm() function.
This will be mostly (only?) used in the net sysctls.

The do_sysctl_strategy isn't used outside kernel/sysctl.c, so this can be
static and without a prototype in header.
Besides, move this one and parse_table() above their callers and drop the
forward declarations of the latter call.
One more "besides" - fix two checkpatch warnings: space before a ( and an
extra space at the end of a line.

Make the keyring quotas controllable through /proc/sys files:
(*) /proc/sys/kernel/keys/root_maxkeys
/proc/sys/kernel/keys/root_maxbytes
Maximum number of keys that root may have and the maximum total number of
bytes of data that root may have stored in those keys.
(*) /proc/sys/kernel/keys/maxkeys
/proc/sys/kernel/keys/maxbytes
Maximum number of keys that each non-root user may have and the maximum
total number of bytes of data that each of those users may have stored in
their keys.
Also increase the quotas as a number of people have been complaining that it's
not big enough. I'm not sure that it's big enough now either, but on the
other hand, it can now be set in /etc/sysctl.conf.

Various SMP balancing algorithms require that the bandwidth period
run in sync.
Possible improvements are moving the rt_bandwidth thing into root_domain
and keeping a span per rt_bandwidth which marks throttled cpus.

Hence we revert them and try again in v2.6.26.

proc_doulongvec_minmax() calls copy_to_user()/copy_from_user(), so we can't
hold hugetlb_lock over the call. Use a dummy variable to store the sysctl
result, like in hugetlb_sysctl_handler(), then grab the lock to update
nr_overcommit_huge_pages.

Some time ago the xxx_vnr() calls (e.g. pid_vnr or find_task_by_vpid) were
_all_ converted to operate on the current pid namespace. After this each call
like xxx_nr_ns(foo, current->nsproxy->pid_ns) is nothing but a xxx_vnr(foo)
one.
Switch all the xxx_nr_ns() callers to use the xxx_vnr() calls where
appropriate.

When I replaced hugetlb_dynamic_pool with nr_overcommit_hugepages I used
proc_doulongvec_minmax() directly. However, hugetlb.c's locking rules
require that all counter modifications occur under the hugetlb_lock. Add a
callback into the hugetlb code similar to the one for nr_hugepages. Grab
the lock around the manipulation of nr_overcommit_hugepages in
proc_doulongvec_minmax().

Adds a new sysctl, 'oom_dump_tasks', that enables the kernel to produce a
dump of all system tasks (excluding kernel threads) when performing an
OOM-killing. Information includes pid, uid, tgid, vm size, rss, cpu,
oom_adj score, and name.
This is helpful for determining why there was an OOM condition and which
rogue task caused it.
It is configurable so that large systems, such as those with several
thousand tasks, do not incur a performance penalty associated with dumping
data they may not desire.
If an OOM was triggered as a result of a memory controller, the tasklist
shall be filtered to exclude tasks that are not a member of the same
cgroup.

NR_OPEN (historically set to 1024*1024) actually forbids processes to open
more than 1024*1024 handles.
Unfortunatly some production servers hit the not so 'ridiculously high
value' of 1024*1024 file descriptors per process.
Changing NR_OPEN is not considered safe because of vmalloc space potential
exhaust.
This patch introduces a new sysctl (/proc/sys/fs/nr_open) wich defaults to
1024*1024, so that admins can decide to change this limit if their workload
needs it.

The capability bounding set is a set beyond which capabilities cannot grow.
Currently cap_bset is per-system. It can be manipulated through sysctl,
but only init can add capabilities. Root can remove capabilities. By
default it includes all caps except CAP_SETPCAP.
This patch makes the bounding set per-process when file capabilities are
enabled. It is inherited at fork from parent. Noone can add elements,
CAP_SETPCAP is required to remove them.
One example use of this is to start a safer container. For instance, until
device namespaces or per-container device whitelists are introduced, it is
best to take CAP_MKNOD away from a container.
The bounding set will not affect pP and pE immediately. It will only
affect pP' and pE' after subsequent exec()s. It also does not affect pI,
and exec() does not constrain pI'. So to really start a shell with no way
of regain CAP_MKNOD, you would do

Add vm.highmem_is_dirtyable toggle
A 32 bit machine with HIGHMEM64 enabled running DCC has an MMAPed file of
approximately 2Gb size which contains a hash format that is written
randomly by the dbclean process. On 2.6.16 this process took a few
minutes. With lowmem only accounting of dirty ratios, this takes about 12
hours of 100% disk IO, all random writes.
Include a toggle in /proc/sys/vm/highmem_is_dirtyable which can be set to 1 to
add the highmem back to the total available memory count.

execve arguments can be quite large. There is no limit on the number of
arguments and a 4G limit on the size of an argument.
this patch prints those aruguments in bite sized pieces. a userspace size
limitation of 8k was discovered so this keeps messages around 7.5k
single arguments larger than 7.5k in length are split into multiple records
and can be identified as aX[Y]=

This patch implements the basic infrastructure for per namespace sysctls.
A list of lists of sysctl headers is added, allowing each namespace to have
it's own list of sysctl headers.
Each list of sysctl headers has a lookup function to find the first
sysctl header in the list, allowing the lists to have a per namespace
instance.
register_sysct_root is added to tell sysctl.c about additional
lists of sysctl_headers. As all of the users are expected to be in
kernel no unregister function is provided.
sysctl_head_next is updated to walk through the list of lists.
__register_sysctl_paths is added to add a new sysctl table on
a non-default sysctl list.
The only intrusive part of this patch is propagating the information
to decided which list of sysctls to use for sysctl_check_table.

By doing this we allow users of register_sysctl_paths that build
and dynamically allocate their ctl_table to be simpler. This allows
them to just remember the ctl_table_header returned from
register_sysctl_paths from which they can now find the
ctl_table array they need to free.

There are a number of modules that register a sysctl table
somewhere deeply nested in the sysctl hierarchy, such as
fs/nfs, fs/xfs, dev/cdrom, etc.
They all specify several dummy ctl_tables for the path name.
This patch implements register_sysctl_path that takes
an additional path name, and makes up dummy sysctl nodes
for each component.
This patch was originally written by Olaf Kirch and
brought to my attention and reworked some by Olaf Hering.
I have changed a few additional things so the bugs are mine.
After converting all of the easy callers Olaf Hering observed
allyesconfig ARCH=i386, the patch reduces the final binary size by 9369 bytes.

Very simple time limit on the realtime scheduling classes.
Allow the rq's realtime class to consume sched_rt_ratio of every
sched_rt_period slice. If the class exceeds this quota the fair class
will preempt the realtime class.

The current load balancing scheme isn't good enough for precise
group fairness.
For example: on a 8-cpu system, I created 3 groups as under:
a = 8 tasks (cpu.shares = 1024)
b = 4 tasks (cpu.shares = 1024)
c = 3 tasks (cpu.shares = 1024)
a, b and c are task groups that have equal weight. We would expect each
of the groups to receive 33.33% of cpu bandwidth under a fair scheduler.
This is what I get with the latest scheduler git tree:

Why do we see bad (group) fairness with current scheuler?
=========================================================
Currently cpu's weight is just the summation of individual task weights.
This can yield incorrect results. For ex: consider three groups as below
on a 2-cpu system:

---------------------------
Group A has 10 tasks, all on CPU0, Group B and C have 5 tasks each all
of which are on CPU1. Each task has the same weight (NICE_0_LOAD =
1024).
The current scheme would yield a cpu weight of 10240 (10*1024) for each cpu and
the load balancer will think both CPUs are perfectly balanced and won't
move around any tasks. This, however, would yield this bandwidth:
A = 50%
B = 25%
C = 25%
which is not the desired result.
What's changing in the patch?
=============================
- How cpu weights are calculated when CONFIF_FAIR_GROUP_SCHED is
defined (see below)
- API Change
- Two tunables introduced in sysfs (under SCHED_DEBUG) to
control the frequency at which the load balance monitor
thread runs.
The basic change made in this patch is how cpu weight (rq->load.weight) is
calculated. Its now calculated as the summation of group weights on a cpu,
rather than summation of task weights. Weight exerted by a group on a
cpu is dependent on the shares allocated to it and also the number of
tasks the group has on that cpu compared to the total number of
(runnable) tasks the group has in the system.
Let,
W(K,i) = Weight of group K on cpu i
T(K,i) = Task load present in group K's cfs_rq on cpu i
T(K) = Total task load of group K across various cpus
S(K) = Shares allocated to group K
NRCPUS = Number of online cpus in the scheduler domain to
which group K is assigned.
Then,
W(K,i) = S(K) * NRCPUS * T(K,i) / T(K)
A load balance monitor thread is created at bootup, which periodically
runs and adjusts group's weight on each cpu. To avoid its overhead, two
min/max tunables are introduced (under SCHED_DEBUG) to control the rate
at which it runs.

min_sched_granularity_ns, max_sched_granularity_ns,
min_wakeup_granularity_ns and max_wakeup_granularity_ns are declared
"unsigned long".
This is incorrect since proc_dointvec_minmax() expects plain "int" guard

hugetlb: introduce nr_overcommit_hugepages sysctl
While examining the code to support /proc/sys/vm/hugetlb_dynamic_pool, I
became convinced that having a boolean sysctl was insufficient:
1) To support per-node control of hugepages, I have previously submitted
patches to add a sysfs attribute related to nr_hugepages. However, with
a boolean global value and per-mount quota enforcement constraining the
dynamic pool, adding corresponding control of the dynamic pool on a
per-node basis seems inconsistent to me.
2) Administration of the hugetlb dynamic pool with multiple hugetlbfs
mount points is, arguably, more arduous than it needs to be. Each quota
would need to be set separately, and the sum would need to be monitored.
To ease the administration, and to help make the way for per-node
control of the static & dynamic hugepage pool, I added a separate
sysctl, nr_overcommit_hugepages. This value serves as a high watermark
for the overall hugepage pool, while nr_hugepages serves as a low
watermark. The boolean sysctl can then be removed, as the condition
nr_overcommit_hugepages > 0
indicates the same administrative setting as
hugetlb_dynamic_pool == 1
Quotas still serve as local enforcement of the size of the pool on a
per-mount basis.
A few caveats:
1) There is a race whereby the global surplus huge page counter is
incremented before a hugepage has allocated. Another process could then
try grow the pool, and fail to convert a surplus huge page to a normal
huge page and instead allocate a fresh huge page. I believe this is
benign, as no memory is leaked (the actual pages are still tracked
correctly) and the counters won't go out of sync.
2) Shrinking the static pool while a surplus is in effect will allow the
number of surplus huge pages to exceed the overcommit value. As long as
this condition holds, however, no more surplus huge pages will be
allowed on the system until one of the two sysctls are increased
sufficiently, or the surplus huge pages go out of use and are freed.
Successfully tested on x86_64 with the current libhugetlbfs snapshot,
modified to use the new sysctl.

register_sysctl_table() can return NULL sometimes, e.g. when kmalloc()
returns NULL or when sysctl check fails.
I've also noticed, that many (most?) code in the kernel doesn't check for
the return value from register_sysctl_table() and later simply calls the
unregister_sysctl_table() with potentially NULL argument.
This is unlikely on a common kernel configuration, but in case we're
dealing with modules and/or fault-injection support, there's a slight
possibility of an OOPS.
Changing all the users to check for return code from the registering does
not look like a good solution - there are too many code doing this and
failure in sysctl tables registration is not a good reason to abort module
loading (in most of the cases).
So I think, that we can just have this check in unregister_sysctl_table
just to avoid accidental OOPS-es (actually, the unregister_sysctl_table()
did exactly this, before the start_unregistering() appeared).

SMP balancing is done with IRQs disabled and can iterate the full rq.
When rqs are large this can cause large irq-latencies. Limit the nr of
iterations on each run.
This fixes a scheduling latency regression reported by the -rt folks.

NSEC_PER_SEC might be more readable.

we lost the sched_min_granularity tunable to a clever optimization
that uses the sched_latency/min_granularity ratio - but the ratio
is quite unintuitive to users and can also crash the kernel if the
ratio is set to 0. So reintroduce the min_granularity tunable,
while keeping the ratio maintained internally.

This is the largest patch in the set. Make all (I hope) the places where
the pid is shown to or get from user operate on the virtual pids.
The idea is:
- all in-kernel data structures must store either struct pid itself
or the pid's global nr, obtained with pid_nr() call;
- when seeking the task from kernel code with the stored id one
should use find_task_by_pid() call that works with global pids;
- when showing pid's numerical value to the user the virtual one
should be used, but however when one shows task's pid outside this
task's namespace the global one is to be used;
- when getting the pid from userspace one need to consider this as
the virtual one and use appropriate task/pid-searching functions.

is_init() is an ambiguous name for the pid==1 check. Split it into
is_global_init() and is_container_init().
A cgroup init has it's tsk->pid == 1.
A global init also has it's tsk->pid == 1 and it's active pid namespace
is the init_pid_ns. But rather than check the active pid namespace,
compare the task structure with 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper', which is
initialized during boot to the /sbin/init process and never changes.

The non-filesystem capability meaning of CAP_SETPCAP is that a process, p1,
can change the capabilities of another process, p2. This is not the
meaning that was intended for this capability at all, and this
implementation came about purely because, without filesystem capabilities,
there was no way to use capabilities without one process bestowing them on
another.
Since we now have a filesystem support for capabilities we can fix the
implementation of CAP_SETPCAP.
The most significant thing about this change is that, with it in effect, no
process can set the capabilities of another process.
The capabilities of a program are set via the capability convolution
rules:
pI(post-exec) = pI(pre-exec)
pP(post-exec) = (X(aka cap_bset) & fP) | (pI(post-exec) & fI)
pE(post-exec) = fE ? pP(post-exec) : 0
at exec() time. As such, the only influence the pre-exec() program can
have on the post-exec() program's capabilities are through the pI
capability set.
The correct implementation for CAP_SETPCAP (and that enabled by this patch)
is that it can be used to add extra pI capabilities to the current process
- to be picked up by subsequent exec()s when the above convolution rules
are applied.
Here is how it works:
Let's say we have a process, p. It has capability sets, pE, pP and pI.
Generally, p, can change the value of its own pI to pI' where
(pI' & ~pI) & ~pP = 0.
That is, the only new things in pI' that were not present in pI need to
be present in pP.
The role of CAP_SETPCAP is basically to permit changes to pI beyond
the above:

This capability is useful for things like login, which (say, via
pam_cap) might want to raise certain inheritable capabilities for use
by the children of the logged-in user's shell, but those capabilities
are not useful to or needed by the login program itself.
One such use might be to limit who can run ping. You set the
capabilities of the 'ping' program to be "= cap_net_raw+i", and then
only shells that have (pI & CAP_NET_RAW) will be able to run
it. Without CAP_SETPCAP implemented as described above, login(pam_cap)
would have to also have (pP & CAP_NET_RAW) in order to raise this

After adding checking to register_sysctl_table and finding a whole new set
of bugs. Missed by countless code reviews and testers I have finally lost
patience with the binary sysctl interface.
The binary sysctl interface has been sort of deprecated for years and
finding a user space program that uses the syscall is more difficult then
finding a needle in a haystack. Problems continue to crop up, with the in
kernel implementation. So since supporting something that no one uses is
silly, deprecate sys_sysctl with a sufficient grace period and notice that
the handful of user space applications that care can be fixed or replaced.
The /proc/sys sysctl interface that people use will continue to be
supported indefinitely.
This patch moves the tested warning about sysctls from the path where
sys_sysctl to a separate path called from both implementations of
sys_sysctl, and it adds a proper entry into
Documentation/feature-removal-schedule.
Allowing us to revisit this in a couple years time and actually kill
sys_sysctl.

After going through the kernels sysctl tables several times it has become
clear that code review and testing is just not effective in prevent
problematic sysctl tables from being used in the stable kernel. I certainly
can't seem to fix the problems as fast as they are introduced.
Therefore this patch adds sysctl_check_table which is called when a sysctl
table is registered and checks to see if we have a problematic sysctl table.
The biggest part of the code is the table of valid binary sysctl entries, but
since we have frozen our set of binary sysctls this table should not need to
change, and it makes it much easier to detect when someone unintentionally
adds a new binary sysctl value.
As best as I can determine all of the several hundred errors spewed on boot up
now are legitimate.

It looks like we inadvertently killed the cad_pid binary sysctl support when
cap_pid was changed to be a struct pid. Since no one has complained just
remove the binary path.

Instead of having a bunch of ifdefs in sysctl.c move all of the pty sysctl
logic into drivers/char/pty.c
As well as cleaning up the logic this prevents sysctl_check_table from
complaining that the root table has a NULL data pointer on something with
generic methods.

aio-nr, aio-max-nr, acpi_video_flags are unsigned long values which sysctl
does not handle properly with a 64bit kernel and a 32bit user space.
Since no one is likely to be using the binary sysctl values and the ascii
interface still works, this patch just removes support for the binary sysctl
interface from the kernel.

There as been no easy way to wrap the default sysctl strategy routine except
for returning 0. Which is not always what we want. The few instances I have
seen that want different behaviour have written their own version of
sysctl_data. While not too hard it is unnecessary code and has the potential
for extra bugs.
So to make these situations easier and make that part of sysctl more symetric
I have factord sysctl_data out of do_sysctl_strategy and exported as a
function everyone can use.
Further having sysctl_data be an explicit function makes checking for badly
formed sysctl tables much easier.

In sysctl.h the typedef struct ctl_table ctl_table violates coding style isn't
needed and is a bit of a nuisance because it makes it harder to recognize
ctl_table is a type name.
So this patch removes it from the generic sysctl code. Hopefully I will have
enough energy to send the rest of my patches will follow and to remove it from
the rest of the kernel.

Control the trigger limit for softlockup warnings. This is useful for
debugging softlockups, by lowering the softlockup_thresh to identify
possible softlockups earlier.
This patch:
1. Adds a sysctl softlockup_thresh with valid values of 1-60s
(Higher value to disable false positives)
2. Changes the softlockup printk to print the cpu softlockup time

Adds a new sysctl, 'oom_kill_allocating_task', which will automatically kill
the OOM-triggering task instead of scanning through the tasklist to find a
memory-hogging target. This is helpful for systems with an insanely large
number of tasks where scanning the tasklist significantly degrades
performance.

Scale writeback cache per backing device, proportional to its writeout speed.
By decoupling the BDI dirty thresholds a number of problems we currently have
will go away, namely:
- mutual interference starvation (for any number of BDIs);
- deadlocks with stacked BDIs (loop, FUSE and local NFS mounts).
It might be that all dirty pages are for a single BDI while other BDIs are
idling. By giving each BDI a 'fair' share of the dirty limit, each one can have
dirty pages outstanding and make progress.
A global threshold also creates a deadlock for stacked BDIs; when A writes to
B, and A generates enough dirty pages to get throttled, B will never start
writeback until the dirty pages go away. Again, by giving each BDI its own
'independent' dirty limit, this problem is avoided.
So the problem is to determine how to distribute the total dirty limit across
the BDIs fairly and efficiently. A DBI that has a large dirty limit but does
not have any dirty pages outstanding is a waste.
What is done is to keep a floating proportion between the DBIs based on
writeback completions. This way faster/more active devices get a larger share
than slower/idle devices.

The maximum size of the huge page pool can be controlled using the overall
size of the hugetlb filesystem (via its 'size' mount option). However in the
common case the this will not be set as the pool is traditionally fixed in
size at boot time. In order to maintain the expected semantics, we need to
prevent the pool expanding by default.
This patch introduces a new sysctl controlling dynamic pool resizing. When
this is enabled the pool will expand beyond its base size up to the size of
the hugetlb filesystem. It is disabled by default.
