perf script has a setting to set the maximum stack depth when processing
callchains. The setting defaults to the hard-coded maximum definition
PERF_MAX_STACK_DEPTH which is 127.
It is possible, when processing instruction traces, to synthesize
callchains. Synthesized callchains do not have the kernel size
limitation and are whatever size the user requests, although validation
presently prevents the user requested a value greater that 1024. The
default value is 16.
To allow for synthesized callchains, make the scripting_max_stack value
at least the same size as the synthesized callchain size.

In a couple of cases the 'comm' member of 'union event' has been used
instead of the correct member ('fork') when processing exit events.
In the cases where it has been used incorrectly, only the 'pid' and
'tid' are affected. The 'pid' value would be correct anyway because it
is in the same position in 'comm' and 'fork' events, but the 'tid' would
have been incorrectly assigned from 'ppid'.
However, for exit events, the kernel puts the current task in the 'ppid'
and 'ttid' which is the same as the exiting task. That is 'ppid' ==
'pid' and if the task is not multi-threaded, 'pid' == 'tid' i.e. the
data goes wrong only when tracing multi-threaded programs.
It is hard to find an example of how this would produce an error in
practice. There are 3 occurences of the fix:
1. perf script is only affected if !sample_id_all which only happens on
old kernels.
2. intel_pt is only affected when decoding without timestamps
and would probably still decode correctly - the exit event is
only used to flush out data which anyway gets flushed at the
end of the session
3. intel_bts also uses the exit event to flush data which
would probably not cause errors as it would get flushed at
the end of the session instead

This patch adds the output of the interrupted machine state (iregs) to
perf script. It presents them as NAME:VALUE so this is easy to parse
during post processing.
To capture the interrupted machine state:
$ perf record -I ....
to display iregs, use the -F option:
$ perf script -F ip,iregs

Milian Wolff reported non functional DWARF unwind under perf script. The
reason is that perf script does not properly configure
callchain_param.record_mode, which is needed by unwind code.
Stealing the code from report and leaving the place for more
initialization code in a hope we could merge it with
report__setup_sample_type one day.

For perf report/script srcline currently only the base file name of the
source file is printed. This is a good default because it usually fits
on the screen.
But in some cases we want to know the full file name, for example to
aggregate hits per file.
In the later case we need more than the base file name to resolve file
naming collisions: for example the kernel source has ~70 files named
"core.c"
It's also useful as input to post processing tools which want to point
to the right file.
Add a flag to allow full file name output.
Add an option to perf report/script to enable this option.

We were storing a copy of kallsyms inside perf.data file so that we
could resolve kernel addresses to function (start, name, mod) tuples,
but that can be achieved using the symbol resolving routines we have
in symbols.c, and that are used elsewhere in tools/perf.
So, do just like 'perf trace' did and ask libtraceevent to use perf's
symbol resolution routines.
The next step is to just skip whatever kallsyms data is embedded in
older perf.data files and finally to stop storing kallsyms in the perf
data file, as the 20-bytes build-id stored in perf.data's header is
enough to find out the right symtab (be it ELF, kcore, kallsyms, etc) to
use.

In addition to using refcounts for the struct thread lifetime
management, we need to protect access to machine->threads from
concurrent access.
That happens in 'perf top', where a thread processes events, inserting
and deleting entries from that rb_tree while another thread decays
hist_entries, that end up dropping references and ultimately deleting
threads from the rb_tree and releasing its resources when no further
hist_entry (or other data structures, like in 'perf sched') references
it.
So the rule is the same for refcounts + protected trees in the kernel,
get the tree lock, find object, bump the refcount, drop the tree lock,
return, use object, drop the refcount if no more use of it is needed,
keep it if storing it in some other data structure, drop when releasing
that data structure.
I.e. pair "t = machine__find(new)_thread()" with a "thread__put(t)", and
"perf_event__preprocess_sample(&al)" with "addr_location__put(&al)".
The addr_location__put() one is because as we return references to
several data structures, we may end up adding more reference counting
for the other data structures and then we'll drop it at
addr_location__put() time.

If a file contains AUX area tracing data then always allow fields 'addr'
and 'cpu' to be selected as options for perf script. This is necessary

Instruction tracing will typically have access to information about the
instruction being executed for a particular ip sample. Some of that
information will be available in the 'flags' member of struct
perf_sample.
With the addition of transactions events synthesis to Instruction
Tracing options, there is a need to be able easily to see the flags
because they show whether the ip is at the start, commit or abort of a
tranasaction.
Consequently add an option to display the flags.
The flags are "bcrosyiABEx" which stand for branch, call, return,
conditional, system, asynchronous, interrupt, transaction abort, trace
begin, trace end, and in transaction, respectively.

The 'record' and 'top' tools already allow a user to specify a CSV of
pids and/or tids of tasks to collect data.
Add those options to the 'report' and 'script' analysis commands to only
consider samples related to the given pids/tids.
This is also inline with the existing comm option.

perf script was not displaying callchains if any selected event did not

Currently vmlinux_path__init() only tries to find vmlinux file from
current directory, /boot and some canonical directories with version
number of the running kernel. This can be a problem when reporting old
data recorded on a kernel version not running currently.
We can use --symfs option for this but it's annoying for user to do it
always. As we already have the info in the perf.data file, it can be
changed to use it for the search automatically.

Move some functions and functionality related to the use of
'addr' out of builtin-script so they can be reused.
The moved functions are: is_bts_event() and sample_addr_correlates_sym()
and a new function perf_event__preprocess_sample_addr() is created from
bits of print_sample_addr().
perf_event__preprocess_sample_addr() is the equivalent of
perf_event__preprocess_sample() but for 'addr' instead of 'ip'.

Change the order of the output to put the srcline last.
It puts the branch 'from address' and 'to address' on the same line,
which is how it would be without the source line reference.
So it makes it consistent and much easier to read.

The addr_location struct should fully qualify an address, and to do that
it should have in it the machine where the thread was found.
Thus all functions that receive an addr_location now don't need to also
receive a 'machine', those functions just need to access al->machine
instead, just like it does with the other parts of an address location:
al->thread, al->map, etc.

Currently the perf.data header is always displayed for stdio output,
which is no always useful.
Disabling header information by default and adding following options to
control header output:
--header - display header information
--header-only - display header information only w/o further
processing

The intent of perf-script is to dump the events and information in the
file. H/W, S/W and raw events all dump callchains if they are present;

The print_sample_start() will be reused by other printing routine for
internal events like COMM, FORK and EXIT from next patch. And because

Attributes (struct perf_event_attr) are recorded separately in the
perf.data file. perf script uses them to set up output options.
However attributes can also be in the event stream, for example when the
input is a pipe (i.e. live mode). This patch makes perf script process
in-stream attributes in the same way as on-file attributes.

As the thread comm is going to be implemented by way of a more
complicated data structure than just a pointer to a string from the
thread struct, convert the readers of comm to use an accessor instead of
accessing it directly.
The accessor will be later overriden to support an enhanced comm
implementation.

This patch is adding 'struct perf_data_file' object as a placeholder for
all attributes regarding perf.data file handling. Changing
perf_session__new to take it as an argument.
The rest of the functionality will be added later to keep this change
simple enough, because all the places using perf_session are changed
now.

The addr field is not displayed by default for hardware events, however
for branch events it is the target of the branch so for BTS display it
by default if it was recorded.

This patch adds support for the new PERF_RECORD_MMAP2 record type
exposed by the kernel. This is an extended PERF_RECORD_MMAP record.
It adds for each file-backed mapping the device major, minor number and
the inode number and generation.
This triplet uniquely identifies the source of a file-backed mapping. It
can be used to detect identical virtual mappings between processes, for
instance.
The patch will prefer MMAP2 over MMAP.

The ip_event struct assumes fixed positions for ip, pid and tid. That
is no longer true with the addition of PERF_SAMPLE_IDENTIFIER. The
information is anyway in struct sample, so use that instead.

Add a new parameter for 'pid' to machine__findnew_thread().
Change callers to pass 'pid' when it is known.
Note that callers sometimes want to find the main thread
which has the memory maps. The main thread has tid == pid
so the usage in that case is:
machine__findnew_thread(machine, pid, pid)
whereas the usage to find the specific thread is:
machine__findnew_thread(machine, pid, tid)

In order to use kernel maps to read object code, those maps must be
adjusted to map to the dso file offset. Because lazy-initialization is
used, that is not done until symbols are loaded. However the maps are
first used by thread__find_addr_map() before symbols are loaded. So
this patch changes thread__find_addr() to "load" kernel maps before
using them.

Commit 73994dc broke named thread support in perf-script. The thread
struct in al is the main thread for a multithreaded process. The thread
struct used for analysis (e.g., dumping events) should be the specific
thread for the sample.

Only display the trace info if using the default event display. When
invoking scripts we assume they have complete control of what's
displayed so we shouldn't unconditionally display the trace info, and
when generating scripts we don't expect to see trace info obscuring the
output message.

As suggested by Arnaldo, many scripts have their own usages and need
capture specific events or tracepoints, so only those scripts whose
target events match the events in current perf data file should be
listed in the script browser menu.
This patch will add the event match checking, by opening "xxx-record"
script to cherry pick out all events name and comparing them with
those inside the perf data file.

Currently many perf commands annotate/evlist/report/script/lock etc all
support "-i" option to chose a specific perf data, and all of them
create a local "input_name" to save the file name for that perf data.
Since most of these commands need it, we can add a global variable for
it, also it can some other benefits:
1. When calling script browser inside hists/annotation browser, it needs
to know the perf data file name to run that script.
2. For further feature like runtime switching to another perf data file,
this variable can also help.

When we were processing a PERF_RECORD_EXIT event we first used
machine__findnew_thread for both the thread exiting and for its parent,
only to use just the thread struct associated with the one exiting, and
to just delete it.
If it existed, i.e. not created at this very moment in
machine__findnew_thread, it will be moved to the machine->dead_threads
linked list, because we may have hist_entries pointing to it, but if it
was created just do be deleted, it will just sit there with no
references at all.
Use the new machine__find_thread() method so that if it is not there, we
don't create it.
As a bonus the parent thread will also not be created at this point.
Create process_fork() and process_exit() helpers to use this and make
the builtins use it instead of the generic process_task(), ditched by
this patch.

perf defines both __used and __unused variables to use for marking
unused variables. The variable __used is defined to
__attribute__((__unused__)), which contradicts the kernel definition to
__attribute__((__used__)) for new gcc versions. On Android, __used is
also defined in system headers and this leads to warnings like: warning:
'__used__' attribute ignored
__unused is not defined in the kernel and is not a standard definition.
If __unused is included everywhere instead of __used, this leads to
conflicts with glibc headers, since glibc has a variables with this name
in its headers.
The best approach is to use __maybe_unused, the definition used in the
kernel for __attribute__((unused)). In this way there is only one
definition in perf sources (instead of 2 definitions that point to the
same thing: __used and __unused) and it works on both Linux and Android.
This patch simply replaces all instances of __used and __unused with
__maybe_unused.

This brings the support for DWARF cfi unwinding on perf post
processing. Call frame informations are retrieved and then passed
to libunwind that requests memory and register content from the
applications.
Adding unwind object to handle the user stack backtrace based
on the user register values and user stack dump.
The unwind object access the libunwind via remote interface
and provides to it all the necessary data to unwind the stack.
The unwind interface provides following function:
unwind__get_entries
And callback (specified in above function) to retrieve
the backtrace entries:

Both perl and python script start processing events other than trace
points, and it's useful to pass the resolved symbol and the dso info to
the event handler in script for better analysis and statistics.
Struct thread is already a member of struct addr_location, using
addr_location will keep the thread info, while providing additional
symbol and dso info if exist, so that the script itself doesn't need to
bother to do the symbol resolving and dso searching work.

We already lookup the associated event_format when reading the perf.data
header, so that we can cache the tracepoint name in evsel->name, so do
it a little further and save the event_format itself, so that we can
avoid relookups in tools that need to access it.
Change the tools to take the most obvious advantage, when they were
using pevent_find_event directly. More work is needed for further
removing the need of a pointer to pevent, such as when asking for event
field values ("common_pid" and the other common fields and per
event_format fields).
This is something that was planned but only got actually done when
Andrey Wagin needed to do this lookup at perf_tool->sample() time, when

The pevent thing is per perf.data file, so I made it stop being static
and become a perf_session member, so tools processing perf.data files
use perf_session and _there_ we read the trace events description into
session->pevent and then change everywhere to stop using that single
global pevent variable and use the per session one.
Note that it _doesn't_ fall backs to trace__event_id, as we're not
interested at all in what is present in the
/sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events in the workstation doing the analysis,
just in what is in the perf.data file.
This patch also introduces perf_session__set_tracepoints_handlers that
is the perf perf.data/session way to associate handlers to tracepoint
events by resolving their IDs using the events descriptions stored in a
perf.data file. Make 'perf sched' use it.

The event parsing code in perf was originally copied from trace-cmd
but never was kept up-to-date with the changes that was done there.
The trace-cmd libtraceevent.a code is much more mature than what is
currently in perf.
This updates the code to use wrappers to handle the calls to the
new event parsing code. The new code requires a handle to be pass
around, which removes the global event variables and allows
more than one event structure to be read from different files
(and different machines).
But perf still has the old global events and the code throughout
perf does not yet have a nice way to pass around a handle.
A global 'pevent' has been made for perf and the old calls have
been created as wrappers to the new event parsing code that uses
the global pevent.
With this change, perf can later incorporate the pevent handle into
the perf structures and allow more than one file to be read and
compared, that contains different events.

The perf script command uses various expressions to indicate "unknown".
It is unfriendly for user scripts to parse it. So, this patch unifies
the expressions to "[unknown]".

As script_spec__delete() frees given struct script_spec it should not be
called if we failed to allocate the struct. Also it's the only caller of
the function, we can get rid of the function itself.

The default input file for perf report is not handled the same way as
perf record does it for its output file. This leads to unexpected
behavior of perf report, etc. E.g.:
# perf record -a -e cpu-cycles sleep 2 | perf report | cat
failed to open perf.data: No such file or directory (try 'perf record' first)
While perf record writes to a fifo, perf report expects perf.data to be
read. This patch changes this to accept fifos as input file.
Applies to the following commands:
perf annotate
perf buildid-list
perf evlist
perf kmem
perf lock
perf report
perf sched
perf script
perf timechart
Also fixes char const* -> const char* type declaration for filename
strings.

The option is documented in man perf-script but was not yet implemented:
-a
Force system-wide collection. Scripts run without a
<command> normally use -a by default, while scripts run
with a <command> normally don't - this option allows the
latter to be run in system-wide mode.
As with perf record you now can profile in system-wide mode for the
runtime of a given command, e.g.:
# perf script -a syscall-counts sleep 2

Currently the meaning of -C varies by perf command: for perf-top,
perf-stat, perf-record it means cpu list. For perf-report it means comm
list. Then perf-annotate, perf-report and perf-script use -c for cpu
list.
Fix annotate, report and script to use -C for cpu list to be consistent
with top, stat and record. This means report needs to use -c for comm
list which does introduce a backward compatibility change.
