As it is already processed by:
perf_session__new
perf_session__open
perf_session__read
This was harmless, because we use dsos__findnew, that would
already find it, but is unnecessary work and removing it makes
builtin-buildid-list.c even shorter.

Add --line option to support showing probable source-code lines.
perf probe --line SRC:LN[-LN|+NUM]
or
perf probe --line FUNC[:LN[-LN|+NUM]]
This option shows source-code with line number if the line can
be probed. Lines without line number (and blue color) means that
the line can not be probed, because debuginfo doesn't have the
information of those lines.
The argument specifies the range of lines, "source.c:100-120"
shows lines between 100th to l20th in source.c file. And
"func:10+20" shows 20 lines from 10th line of func function.
e.g.
# ./perf probe --line kernel/sched.c:1080
<kernel/sched.c:1080>
*
* called with rq->lock held and irqs disabled
*/
static void hrtick_start(struct rq *rq, u64 delay)

1093 __smp_call_function_single(cpu_of(rq), &rq->hrtick_csd,

Support glob wildcard when selecting tracepoint events by -e

syntax for selecting all tracepoints under GROUP group.
With this patch, user can choose tracepoints more flexibly by using

DSOs don't have this problem because the kernel emits a
PERF_MMAP for each new executable mapping it performs on
monitored threads.
To fix the kernel case we simulate the same behaviour, by having
'perf record' to synthesize a PERF_MMAP for the kernel, encoded
like this:
[root@doppio ~]# perf record -a -f sleep 1
[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
[ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.344 MB perf.data (~15038 samples) ]
[root@doppio ~]# perf report -D | head -10
0xd0 [0x40]: event: 1
.
. ... raw event: size 64 bytes
. 0000: 01 00 00 00 00 00 40 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ......@........
. 0010: 00 00 00 81 ff ff ff ff 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ...............
. 0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 5b 6b 65 72 6e 65 6c 2e ........ [kernel
. 0030: 6b 61 6c 6c 73 79 6d 73 2e 5f 74 65 78 74 5d 00 kallsyms._text]
. 0xd0
[0x40]: PERF_RECORD_MMAP 0/0: [0xffffffff81000000((nil)) @ (nil)]: [kernel.kallsyms._text]
I.e. we identify such event as having:
.pid = 0
.filename = [kernel.kallsyms.REFNAME]
.start = REFNAME addr in /proc/kallsyms at 'perf record' time
and use now a hardcoded value of '.text' for REFNAME.
Then, later, in 'perf report', if there are any kernel hits and
thus we need to resolve kernel symbols, we search for REFNAME
and if its address changed, relocation happened and we thus must
change the kernel mapping routines to one that uses .pgoff as
the relocation to apply.
This way we use the same mechanism used for the other DSOs and
don't have to do a two pass in all the kernel symbols.

selected -g but no callchain data. Did you call perf record without -g?
And fix the bug reported by peterz when we do indeed record with
callchains and then ask for a report without:
[root@doppio ~]# perf record -a -g -f sleep 2s
[root@doppio ~]# perf report --no-call-graph

When we finish creating the hist_entries we _already_ have them
sorted "by name", in fact by what is in --sort, that is exactly
how we can find the pairs in perf_session__match_hists as
'comm', 'dso' & 'symbol' all are strings we need to find the
matches in the baseline session.
So only do the sort by hits followed by a resort by --sort if we
need to find the position for shwowing the --displacement of
hist entries.
Now all these modes work correctly:
Example is a simple 'perf record -f find / > /dev/null' ran
twice then followed by the following commands:
$ perf diff -f --sort comm
# Baseline Delta Command
# ........ .......... .......
#
0.00% +100.00% find
$ perf diff -f --sort dso
# Baseline Delta Shared Object
# ........ .......... ..................
#
59.97% -0.44% [kernel]
21.17% +0.28% libc-2.5.so
18.49% +0.16% [ext3]
0.37% find
$ perf diff -f --sort symbol | head -8
# Baseline Delta Symbol
# ........ .......... ......
#
6.21% +0.36% [k] ext3fs_dirhash
3.43% +0.41% [.] __GI_strlen
3.53% +0.16% [k] __kmalloc
3.17% +0.49% [k] system_call
3.06% +0.37% [k] ext3_htree_store_dirent
$ perf diff -f --sort dso,symbol | head -8
# Baseline Delta Shared Object Symbol
# ........ .......... .................. ......
#
6.21% +0.36% [ext3] [k] ext3fs_dirhash
3.43% +0.41% libc-2.5.so [.] __GI_strlen
3.53% +0.16% [kernel] [k] __kmalloc
3.17% +0.49% [kernel] [k] system_call
3.06% +0.37% [ext3] [k] ext3_htree_store_dirent
$
And we don't have to do two expensive resorts in the common, non
--displacement case.

Now a cache will be created in a ~/.debug debuginfo like
hierarchy, so that at the end of a 'perf record' session all the
binaries (with build-ids) involved get collected and indexed by
their build-ids, so that perf report can find them.
This is interesting when developing software where you want to
do a 'perf diff' with the previous build and opens avenues for
lots more interesting tools, like a 'perf diff --graph' that
takes more than two binaries into account.
Tunables for collecting just the symtabs can be added if one
doesn't want to have the full binary, but having the full binary
allows things like 'perf rerecord' or other tools that can
re-run the tests by having access to the exact binary in some
perf.data file, so it may well be interesting to keep the full
binary there.
Space consumption is minimised by trying to use hard links, a
'perf cache' tool to manage the space used, a la ccache is
required to purge older entries.
With this in place it will be possible also to introduce new
commands, 'perf archive' and 'perf restore' (or some more
suitable and future proof names) to create a cpio/tar file with
the perf data and the files in the cache that _had_ perf hits of
interest.
There are more aspects to polish, like finding the right vmlinux
file to cache, etc, but this is enough for a first step.

[acme@doppio linux-2.6-tip]$ perf diff --hell
Error: unknown option `hell'
usage: perf diff [<options>] [old_file] [new_file]
Segmentation fault
[acme@doppio linux-2.6-tip]$
Also go over the other such arrays to check if they all were OK,
they are, but there were some minor changes to do like making
one static and renaming another to match the command it refers
to.

Check new event name is same syntax as a C symbol in perf command.
In other words, checking the name is as like as other tracepoint
events.
This can prevent user to create an event with useless name (e.g.
foo|bar, foo*bar).

This patch adds -I/usr/include/libdwarf to BASIC_CFLAGS
and fix probe-finder.h to include just libdwarf.h/dwarf.h.
This patch also adds a workaround for the undefined _MIPS_SZLONG
bug in libdwarf.h.

That means that almost everything you can do with 'perf report'
can be done with 'perf diff', for instance:
$ perf record -f find / > /dev/null
[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
[ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.062 MB perf.data (~2699
samples) ] $ perf record -f find / > /dev/null
[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
[ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.062 MB perf.data (~2687
samples) ] perf diff | head -8
9.02% +1.00% find libc-2.10.1.so [.] _IO_vfprintf_internal
2.91% -1.00% find [kernel] [k] __kmalloc
2.85% -1.00% find [kernel] [k] ext4_htree_store_dirent
1.99% -1.00% find [kernel] [k] _atomic_dec_and_lock
2.44% find [kernel] [k] half_md4_transform
$
So if you want to zoom into libc:
$ perf diff --dsos libc-2.10.1.so | head -8
37.34% find [.] _IO_vfprintf_internal
10.34% find [.] __GI_memmove
8.25% +2.00% find [.] _int_malloc
5.07% -1.00% find [.] __GI_mempcpy
7.62% +2.00% find [.] _int_free
$
And if there were multiple commands using libc, it is also
possible to aggregate them all by using --sort symbol:
$ perf diff --dsos libc-2.10.1.so --sort symbol | head -8
37.34% [.] _IO_vfprintf_internal
10.34% [.] __GI_memmove
8.25% +2.00% [.] _int_malloc
5.07% -1.00% [.] __GI_mempcpy
7.62% +2.00% [.] _int_free
$
The displacement column now is off by default, to use it:
perf diff -m --dsos libc-2.10.1.so --sort symbol | head -8
37.34% [.] _IO_vfprintf_internal
10.34% [.] __GI_memmove
8.25% +2.00% [.] _int_malloc
5.07% -1.00% +2 [.] __GI_mempcpy
7.62% +2.00% -1 [.] _int_free
$
Using -t/--field-separator can be used for scripting:
$ perf diff -t, -m --dsos libc-2.10.1.so --sort symbol | head -8
37.34, , ,[.] _IO_vfprintf_internal
10.34, , ,[.] __GI_memmove
8.25,+2.00%, ,[.] _int_malloc
5.07,-1.00%, +2,[.] __GI_mempcpy
7.62,+2.00%, -1,[.] _int_free
6.99,+1.00%, -1,[.] _IO_new_file_xsputn
1.89,-2.00%, +4,[.] __readdir64

prevents users to open old or different debuginfo from

Support event name syntax for --add option. This allows
users to specify event name for each new event.
The --add syntax is:
perf probe --add '[EVENT=]SRC:LINE ARGS'
or
perf probe --add '[EVENT=]FUNC[+OFFS|%return|:RLN][@SRC] ARGS'
e.g.
./perf probe --add myprobe1=schedule
Note: currently group name is not supported yet, because it
can cause name-space confliction with other tracepoint/

Allow scripts to be recorded/executed by simply specifying the
script root name (the script name minus extension) along with
'record' or 'report' to 'perf trace'.
The script names shown by 'perf trace -l' can be directly used
to run the command-line contained within the corresponding
'-record' and '-report' versions of scripts in the scripts/*/bin
directories.
For example, to record the trace data needed to run the
wakeup-latency.pl script, the user can easily find the name of
the corresponding script from the script list and invoke it
using 'perf trace record', without having to remember the
details of how to do the same thing using the lower-level perf
trace command-line options:
root@tropicana:~# perf trace -l
List of available trace scripts:
workqueue-stats workqueue stats (ins/exe/create/destroy)
wakeup-latency system-wide min/max/avg wakeup latency
rw-by-file <comm> r/w activity for a program, by file
check-perf-trace useless but exhaustive test script
rw-by-pid system-wide r/w activity
root@tropicana:~# perf trace record wakeup-latency
^C[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
[ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.296 MB perf.data (~12931
samples) ]
To run the wakeup-latency.pl script using the captured data,
change 'record' to 'report' in the command-line:
root@tropicana:~# perf trace report wakeup-latency
wakeup_latency stats:
total_wakeups: 65
avg_wakeup_latency (ns): 22417
min_wakeup_latency (ns): 3470
max_wakeup_latency (ns): 223311
perf trace Perl script stopped
If the script takes options, thay can be simply added to the end
of the 'report' invocation:
root@tropicana:~# perf trace record rw-by-file
^C[ perf record: Woken up 2 times to write data ]
[ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.782 MB perf.data (~34171
samples) ]
root@tropicana:~# perf trace report rw-by-file perf
file read counts for perf:

Lists the available perf trace scripts, one per line e.g.:
root@tropicana:~# perf trace -l
List of available trace scripts:
workqueue-stats workqueue stats (ins/exe/create/destroy)
wakeup-latency system-wide min/max/avg wakeup latency
rw-by-file <comm> r/w activity for a program, by file
check-perf-trace useless but exhaustive test script
rw-by-pid system-wide r/w activity
To be consistent with the other listing options in perf, the
current latency trace option was changed to '-L', and '-l' is
now used to access the script listing as:
To create the list, it searches each scripts/*/bin directory for
files ending with "-report" and reads information found in
certain comment lines contained in those shell scripts:
- if the comment line starts with "description:", the rest of the
line is used as a 'half-line' description. To keep each line in
the list to a single line, the description should be limited to 40
characters (the rest of the line contains the script name and
args)
- if the comment line starts with "args:", the rest of the line
names the args the script supports. Required args should be
surrounded by <> brackets, optional args by [] brackets.
The current scripts in scripts/perl/bin have also been updated
with description: and args: comments.

One oversight of the original scripting_ops patch was a lack of
support for passing args to handler scripts. This adds
argc/argv to the start_script() scripting_op, and changes the
rw-by-file script to take 'comm' arg rather than the 'perf'
value currently hard-coded. It also takes the opportunity to do
some related minor cleanup.

There is still some more work to do to disentangle map creation
from DSO loading, but this happens only for the kernel, and for
the early adopters of perf diff, where this disentanglement
matters most, we'll be testing different kernels, so no problem
here.
Further clarification: right now we create the kernel maps for
the various modules and discontiguous kernel text maps when
loading the DSO, we should do it as a two step process, first
creating the maps, for multiple mappings with the same DSO
store, then doing the dso load just once, for the first hit on
one of the maps sharing this DSO backing store.

This patch adds a new "all" pseudo subsystem and an "all" pseudo
suite. These are for testing all subsystem and its all suite, or
all suite of one subsystem.

necessity to make them into individual patch.)

Configurable via symbol_conf.sort_by_name, so that the cost of an
extra rb_node on all 'struct symbol' instances is not paid by tools
that only want to decode addresses.
How to use it:
symbol_conf.sort_by_name = true;
symbol_init(&symbol_conf);
struct map *map = map_groups__find_by_name(kmaps, MAP__VARIABLE, "[kernel.kallsyms]");
if (map == NULL) {
pr_err("couldn't find map!\n");
kernel_maps__fprintf(stdout);
} else {
struct symbol *sym = map__find_symbol_by_name(map, sym_filter, NULL);
if (sym == NULL)
pr_err("couldn't find symbol %s!\n", sym_filter);
else
pr_info("symbol %s: %#Lx-%#Lx \n", sym_filter, sym->start, sym->end);
}
Looking over the vmlinux/kallsyms is common enough that I'll add a
variable to the upcoming struct perf_session to avoid the need to
use map_groups__find_by_name to get the main vmlinux/kallsyms map.
The above example looks on the 'variable' symtab, but it is just
like that for the functions one.
Also the sort operation is done when we first use
map__find_symbol_by_name, in a lazy way.

else {
struct symbol *sym = map__find_symbol(map, addr, NULL);
if (sym == NULL)
pr_err("couldn't find addr!\n");
else
pr_info("addr %#Lx is in %s global var\n", addr, sym->name);
}
exit(0);
}
Added just after symbol__init() call in 'perf top', then:
{
u64 addr = strtoull(sym_filter, NULL, 16);
struct map *map = map_groups__find(kmaps, MAP__VARIABLE, addr);
if (map == NULL)
pr_err("couldn't find map!\n");

if (sym == NULL)
pr_err("couldn't find addr!\n");
else

}
exit(0);

Using a struct thread instance just to hold the kernel space maps
(vmlinux + modules) is overkill and confuses people trying to
understand the perf symbols abstractions.
The kernel maps are really present in all threads, i.e. the kernel
is a library, not a separate thread.
So introduce the 'map_groups' abstraction and use it for the kernel
maps, now in the kmaps global variable.
It, in turn, will move, together with the threads list to the
perf_file abstraction, so that we can support multiple perf_file
instances, needed by perf diff.

In current code, task's execute time is got by reading
'/proc/<pid>/sched' file, it's wrong if the task is created
by pthread_create(), because every thread task has same pid.
This way also has two demerits:
1: 'perf sched replay' can't work if the kernel is not
compiled with the 'CONFIG_SCHED_DEBUG' option
2: perf tool should depend on proc file system
So, this patch uses PERF_COUNT_SW_TASK_CLOCK to get task's
execution time instead of reading /proc file.
Changelog v2 -> v3:
use PERF_COUNT_SW_TASK_CLOCK instead of rusage() as Ingo's
suggestion

Fix add-probe command syntax without --add option.
perf-probe supports add-probe command without --add
option. But it treats each argument as an event definition.
e.g.
perf probe func arg1 arg2
is interpreted as
perf probe --add func --add arg1 --add arg2
But it may be useless in many cases.
This patch fixes this syntax to fold those arguments into
one event definition if there is no --add option. With this
change, above command is interpreted as below;
perf probe --add "func arg1 arg2"

Uses of strcat are almost always signs that someone is too lazy
to think about the code a bit more carefully. One always has to
know about the lengths of the strings involved to avoid buffer
overflows.
This is one case where the size of the object code for me is
reduced by 38 bytes. The code should also be faster, especially
if flags is non-NULL.

Currently, sample event data is parsed for each commands, and it
is assuming that the data is not including other data. (E.g.
timechart, trace, etc. can't parse the event if it has
PERF_SAMPLE_CALLCHAIN)
So, even if we record the superset data for multiple commands at
a time, commands can't parse. etc.
To fix it, this makes common sample event parser, and use it to
parse sample event correctly. (PERF_SAMPLE_READ is unsupported
for now though, it seems to be not using.)
