Frederic Weisbecker e55f605c14 tracing/ftrace: remove unused code in sched_switch tracer
Impact: cleanup

When init_sched_switch_trace() is called, it has no reason to start
the sched tracer if the sched_ref is not zero.

_ If this is non-zero, the tracer is already used, but we can register it
to the tracing engine. There is already a security which avoid the tracer
probes not to be resgistered twice.

_ If this is zero, this block will not be used.

Frederic Weisbecker 07695fa04e tracing/ftrace: fix a race condition in sched_switch tracer
Impact: fix race condition in sched_switch tracer

This patch fixes a race condition in the sched_switch tracer. If
several tasks (IE: concurrent initcalls) are playing with
tracing_start_cmdline_record() and tracing_stop_cmdline_record(), the
following situation could happen:

_ Task A and B are using the same tracepoint probe. Task A holds it.
  Task B is sleeping and doesn't hold it.

_ Task A frees the sched tracer, then sched_ref is decremented to 0.

_ Task A is preempted and hadn't yet unregistered its tracepoint
  probe, then B runs.

_ B increments sched_ref, sees it's 1 and then guess it has to
  register its probe. But it has not been freed by task A.

_ A lot of bad things can happen after that...

Frederic Weisbecker 71566a0d16 tracing/fastboot: Enable boot tracing only during initcalls
Impact: modify boot tracer

We used to disable the initcall tracing at a specified time (IE: end
of builtin initcalls). But we don't need it anymore. It will be
stopped when initcalls are finished.

However we want two things:

_Start this tracing only after pre-smp initcalls are finished.

_Since we are planning to trace sched_switches at the same time, we
want to enable them only during the initcall execution.

For this purpose, this patch introduce two functions to enable/disable
the sched_switch tracing during boot.

Steven Rostedt b2a866f934 ftrace: function tracer with irqs disabled
Impact: disable interrupts during trace entry creation (as opposed to preempt)

To help with performance, I set the ftracer to not disable interrupts,
and only to disable preemption. If an interrupt occurred, it would not
be traced, because the function tracer protects itself from recursion.
This may be faster, but the trace output might miss some traces.

This patch makes the fuction trace disable interrupts, but it also
adds a runtime feature to disable preemption instead. It does this by
having two different tracer functions. When the function tracer is
enabled, it will check to see which version is requested (irqs disabled
or preemption disabled). Then it will use the corresponding function
as the tracer.

Irq disabling is the default behaviour, but if the user wants better
performance, with the chance of missing traces, then they can choose
the preempt disabled version.

Running hackbench 3 times with the irqs disabled and 3 times with
the preempt disabled function tracer yielded:

tracing type       times            entries recorded
------------      --------          ----------------
irq disabled      43.393            166433066
                  43.282            166172618
                  43.298            166256704

preempt disabled  38.969            159871710
                  38.943            159972935
                  39.325            161056510

Average:

   irqs disabled:  43.324           166287462
preempt disabled:  39.079           160300385

 preempt is 10.8 percent faster than irqs disabled.

I wrote a patch to count function trace recursion and reran hackbench.

With irq disabled: 1,150 times the function tracer did not trace due to
  recursion.
with preempt disabled: 5,117,718 times.

The thousand times with irq disabled could be due to NMIs, or simply a case
where it called a function that was not protected by notrace.

But we also see that a large amount of the trace is lost with the
preempt version.

Steven Rostedt 8f0a056fcb ftrace: introduce ftrace_preempt_disable()/enable()
Impact: add new ftrace-plugin internal APIs

Parts of the tracer needs to be careful about schedule recursion.
If the NEED_RESCHED flag is set, a preempt_enable will call schedule.
Inside the schedule function, the NEED_RESCHED flag is cleared.

The problem arises when a trace happens in the schedule function but before
NEED_RESCHED is cleared. The race is as follows:

schedule()
  >> tracer called

    trace_function()
       preempt_disable()
       [ record trace ]
       preempt_enable()  <<- here's the issue.

         [check NEED_RESCHED]
          schedule()
          [ Repeat the above, over and over again ]

The naive approach is simply to use preempt_enable_no_schedule instead.
The problem with that approach is that, although we solve the schedule
recursion issue, we now might lose a preemption check when not in the
schedule function.

  trace_function()
    preempt_disable()
    [ record trace ]
    [Interrupt comes in and sets NEED_RESCHED]
    preempt_enable_no_resched()
    [continue without scheduling]

The way ftrace handles this problem is with the following approach:

	int resched;

	resched = need_resched();
	preempt_disable_notrace();
	[record trace]
	if (resched)
		preempt_enable_no_sched_notrace();
	else
		preempt_enable_notrace();

This may seem like the opposite of what we want. If resched is set
then we call the "no_sched" version?? The reason we do this is because
if NEED_RESCHED is set before we disable preemption, there's two reasons
for that:

  1) we are in an atomic code path
  2) we are already on our way to the schedule function, and maybe even
     in the schedule function, but have yet to clear the flag.

Both the above cases we do not want to schedule.

This solution has already been implemented within the ftrace infrastructure.
But the problem is that it has been implemented several times. This patch
encapsulates this code to two nice functions.

  resched = ftrace_preempt_disable();
  [ record trace]
  ftrace_preempt_enable(resched);

This way the tracers do not need to worry about getting it right.

Steven Rostedt 818e3dd30a tracing, ring-buffer: add paranoid checks for loops
While writing a new tracer, I had a bug where I caused the ring-buffer
to recurse in a bad way. The bug was with the tracer I was writing
and not the ring-buffer itself. But it took a long time to find the
problem.

This patch adds paranoid checks into the ring-buffer infrastructure
that will catch bugs of this nature.

Note: I put the bug back in the tracer and this patch showed the error
      nicely and prevented the lockup.

Steven Rostedt b3aa557722 ftrace: use kretprobe trampoline name to test in output
Impact: ia64+tracing build fix

When a function is kprobed, the return address is set to the
kprobe_trampoline, or something similar. This caused the output
of the trace to look confusing when the parent seemed to be this
"kprobe_trampoline" function.

To fix this, Abhishek Sagar added a test of the instruction pointer
of the parent to see if it matched the kprobe_trampoline. If it
did, the output would print a "[unknown/kretprobe'd]" instead.

Unfortunately, not all archs do this the same way, and the trampoline
function may not be exported, which causes failures in builds.

This patch will compare the name instead of the pointer to see
if it matches. This prevents us from depending on a function from
being exported, and should work on all archs. The worst that can
happen is that an arch might use a different name and then we
go back to the confusing output. At least the arch will still build.

Steven Rostedt 9244489a7b ftrace: handle archs that do not support irqs_disabled_flags
Impact: build fix on non-lockdep architectures

Some architectures do not support a way to read the irq flags that
is set from "local_irq_save(flags)" to determine if interrupts were
disabled or enabled. Ftrace uses this information to display to the user
if the trace occurred with interrupts enabled or disabled.

Besides the fact that those archs that do not support this will fail to
compile, unless they fix it, we do not want to have the trace simply
say interrupts were not disabled or they were enabled, without knowing
the real answer.

This patch adds a 'X' in the output to let the user know that the
architecture they are running on does not support a way for the tracer
to determine if interrupts were enabled or disabled. It also lets those
same archs compile with tracing enabled.

Steven Rostedt f3384b28a0 ftrace: fix trace_nop config select

The trace_nop is the tracer that is defined when no tracer is set in

Frederic Weisbecker 0b6e4d56bf ftrace: perform an initialization for ftrace to enable it
Impact: corrects a bug which made the non-dyn function tracer not functional

With latest git, the non-dynamic function tracer didn't get any trace.

The problem was the fact that ftrace_enabled wasn't initialized to 1
because ftrace hasn't any init function when DYNAMIC_FTRACE is disabled.

So when a tracer tries to register an ftrace_ops struct,
__register_ftrace_function failed to set the hook.

This patch corrects it by setting an init function to initialize
ftrace during the boot.

Steven Rostedt 60063a6623 ftrace: fix current_tracer error return
The commit (in linux-tip) c2931e05ec
 ( ftrace: return an error when setting a nonexistent tracer )
added useful code that would error when a bad tracer was written into
the current_tracer file.

But this had a bug if the amount written was more than the amount read by
that code. The first iteration would set the tracer correctly, but since
it did not consume the rest of what was written (usually whitespace), the
userspace utility would continue to write what was not consumed. This
second iteration would fail to find a tracer and return -EINVAL. Funny
thing is that the tracer would have already been set.

This patch just consumes all the data that is written to the file.

Steven Rostedt 944ac4259e ftrace: ftrace dump on oops control
Impact: add (default-off) dump-trace-on-oops flag

Currently, ftrace is set up to dump its contents to the console if the
kernel panics or oops. This can be annoying if you have trace data in
the buffers and you experience an oops, but the trace data is old or
static.

Usually when you want ftrace to dump its contents is when you are debugging
your system and you have set up ftrace to trace the events leading to
an oops.

This patch adds a control variable called "ftrace_dump_on_oops" that will
enable the ftrace dump to console on oops. This variable is default off
but a developer can enable it either through the kernel command line
by adding "ftrace_dump_on_oops" or at run time by setting (or disabling)
/proc/sys/kernel/ftrace_dump_on_oops.

Steven Rostedt 81520a1b06 ftrace: stack tracer only record when on stack
The stack trace API does not record if the stack is not on the current

consistent with the size of the thread stack, this makes the calculation
of the stack size usually bogus.

This all confuses the stack tracer. I unfortunately do not have time to

the stack pointer is on the tasks stack (instead of bogus numbers).

The patch simply returns if the stack pointer is not on the task's stack.

A lot of tracers have HAVE_FTRACE as a dependent config where it
really should not. The HAVE_FTRACE is a misnomer (soon to be fixed)
and describes if the architecture has the function tracer (mcount)
implemented. The ftrace infrastructure is implemented in all archs.

Steven Rostedt bd95b88d9e ftrace: release functions from hash
The x86 architecture uses a static recording of mcount caller locations
and is not affected by this patch.

For architectures still using the dynamic ftrace daemon, this patch is
critical. It removes the race between the recording of a function that
calls mcount, the unloading of a module, and the ftrace daemon updating
the call sites.

This patch adds the releasing of the hash functions that the daemon uses
to update the mcount call sites. When a module is unloaded, not only
are the replaced call site table update, but now so is the hash recorded
functions that the ftrace daemon will use.

Again, architectures that implement MCOUNT_RECORD are not affected by
this (which currently only x86 has).

Steven Rostedt bf41a158ca ring-buffer: make reentrant
This patch replaces the local_irq_save/restore with preempt_disable/
enable. This allows for interrupts to enter while recording.
To write to the ring buffer, you must reserve data, and then
commit it. During this time, an interrupt may call a trace function
that will also record into the buffer before the commit is made.

The interrupt will reserve its entry after the first entry, even
though the first entry did not finish yet.

The time stamp delta of the interrupt entry will be zero, since
in the view of the trace, the interrupt happened during the
first field anyway.

Locking still takes place when the tail/write moves from one page
to the next. The reader always takes the locks.

A new page pointer is added, called the commit. The write/tail will
always point to the end of all entries. The commit field will
point to the last committed entry. Only this commit entry may
update the write time stamp.

The reader can only go up to the commit. It cannot go past it.

If a lot of interrupts come in during a commit that fills up the
buffer, and it happens to make it all the way around the buffer
back to the commit, then a warning is printed and new events will
be dropped.

Steven Rostedt 38697053fa ftrace: preempt disable over interrupt disable
With the new ring buffer infrastructure in ftrace, I'm trying to make
ftrace a little more light weight.

This patch converts a lot of the local_irq_save/restore into
preempt_disable/enable. The original preempt count in a lot of cases
has to be sent in as a parameter so that it can be recorded correctly.
Some places were recording it incorrectly before anyway.

This is also laying the ground work to make ftrace a little bit
more reentrant, and remove all locking. The function tracers must
still protect from reentrancy.

Note: All the function tracers must be careful when using preempt_disable.
  It must do the following:

  resched = need_resched();
  preempt_disable_notrace();
  [...]
  if (resched)
	preempt_enable_no_resched_notrace();
  else
	preempt_enable_notrace();

The reason is that if this function traces schedule() itself, the
preempt_enable_notrace() will cause a schedule, which will lead
us into a recursive failure.

If we needed to reschedule before calling preempt_disable, we
should have already scheduled. Since we did not, this is most
likely that we should not and are probably inside a schedule
function.

If resched was not set, we still need to catch the need resched
flag being set when preemption was off and the if case at the
end will catch that for us.

Steven Rostedt 7104f300c5 ftrace: type cast filter+verifier
The mmiotrace map had a bug that would typecast the entry from
the trace to the wrong type. That is a known danger of C typecasts,
there's absolutely zero checking done on them.

Help that problem a bit by using a GCC extension to implement a
type filter that restricts the types that a trace record can be
cast into, and by adding a dynamic check (in debug mode) to verify
the type of the entry.

This patch adds a macro to assign all entries of ftrace using the type
of the variable and checking the entry id. The typecasts are now done
in the macro for only those types that it knows about, which should
be all the types that are allowed to be read from the tracer.

Steven Rostedt d769041f86 ring_buffer: implement new locking
The old "lock always" scheme had issues with lockdep, and was not very
efficient anyways.

This patch does a new design to be partially lockless on writes.
Writes will add new entries to the per cpu pages by simply disabling
interrupts. When a write needs to go to another page than it will
grab the lock.

A new "read page" has been added so that the reader can pull out a page
from the ring buffer to read without worrying about the writer writing over
it. This allows us to not take the lock for all reads. The lock is
now only taken when a read needs to go to a new page.

This is far from lockless, and interrupts still need to be disabled,
but it is a step towards a more lockless solution, and it also
solves a lot of the issues that were noticed by the first conversion
of ftrace to the ring buffers.

Note: the ring_buffer_{un}lock API has been removed.

Steven Rostedt 7a8e76a382 tracing: unified trace buffer
This is a unified tracing buffer that implements a ring buffer that
hopefully everyone will eventually be able to use.

The events recorded into the buffer have the following structure:

  struct ring_buffer_event {
	u32 type:2, len:3, time_delta:27;
	u32 array[];
  };

The minimum size of an event is 8 bytes. All events are 4 byte
aligned inside the buffer.

There are 4 types (all internal use for the ring buffer, only
the data type is exported to the interface users).

 RINGBUF_TYPE_PADDING: this type is used to note extra space at the end
	of a buffer page.

 RINGBUF_TYPE_TIME_EXTENT: This type is used when the time between events
	is greater than the 27 bit delta can hold. We add another
	32 bits, and record that in its own event (8 byte size).

 RINGBUF_TYPE_TIME_STAMP: (Not implemented yet). This will hold data to
	help keep the buffer timestamps in sync.

RINGBUF_TYPE_DATA: The event actually holds user data.

The "len" field is only three bits. Since the data must be
4 byte aligned, this field is shifted left by 2, giving a
max length of 28 bytes. If the data load is greater than 28
bytes, the first array field holds the full length of the
data load and the len field is set to zero.

Example, data size of 7 bytes:

	type = RINGBUF_TYPE_DATA
	len = 2
	time_delta: <time-stamp> - <prev_event-time-stamp>
	array[0..1]: <7 bytes of data> <1 byte empty>

This event is saved in 12 bytes of the buffer.

An event with 82 bytes of data:

	type = RINGBUF_TYPE_DATA
	len = 0
	time_delta: <time-stamp> - <prev_event-time-stamp>
	array[0]: 84 (Note the alignment)
	array[1..14]: <82 bytes of data> <2 bytes empty>

The above event is saved in 92 bytes (if my math is correct).
82 bytes of data, 2 bytes empty, 4 byte header, 4 byte length.

Do not reference the above event struct directly. Use the following
functions to gain access to the event table, since the
ring_buffer_event structure may change in the future.

ring_buffer_event_length(event): get the length of the event.
	This is the size of the memory used to record this
	event, and not the size of the data pay load.

ring_buffer_time_delta(event): get the time delta of the event
	This returns the delta time stamp since the last event.
	Note: Even though this is in the header, there should
		be no reason to access this directly, accept
		for debugging.

ring_buffer_event_data(event): get the data from the event
	This is the function to use to get the actual data
	from the event. Note, it is only a pointer to the
	data inside the buffer. This data must be copied to
	another location otherwise you risk it being written
	over in the buffer.

ring_buffer_lock: A way to lock the entire buffer.
ring_buffer_unlock: unlock the buffer.

ring_buffer_alloc: create a new ring buffer. Can choose between
	overwrite or consumer/producer mode. Overwrite will
	overwrite old data, where as consumer producer will
	throw away new data if the consumer catches up with the
	producer. The consumer/producer is the default.

ring_buffer_free: free the ring buffer.

ring_buffer_resize: resize the buffer. Changes the size of each cpu
	buffer. Note, it is up to the caller to provide that
	the buffer is not being used while this is happening.
	This requirement may go away but do not count on it.

ring_buffer_lock_reserve: locks the ring buffer and allocates an
	entry on the buffer to write to.
ring_buffer_unlock_commit: unlocks the ring buffer and commits it to
	the buffer.

ring_buffer_write: writes some data into the ring buffer.

ring_buffer_peek: Look at a next item in the cpu buffer.
ring_buffer_consume: get the next item in the cpu buffer and
	consume it. That is, this function increments the head
	pointer.

ring_buffer_read_start: Start an iterator of a cpu buffer.
	For now, this disables the cpu buffer, until you issue
	a finish. This is just because we do not want the iterator
	to be overwritten. This restriction may change in the future.
	But note, this is used for static reading of a buffer which
	is usually done "after" a trace. Live readings would want
	to use the ring_buffer_consume above, which will not
	disable the ring buffer.

ring_buffer_read_finish: Finishes the read iterator and reenables
	the ring buffer.

ring_buffer_iter_peek: Look at the next item in the cpu iterator.
ring_buffer_read: Read the iterator and increment it.
ring_buffer_iter_reset: Reset the iterator to point to the beginning
	of the cpu buffer.
ring_buffer_iter_empty: Returns true if the iterator is at the end
	of the cpu buffer.

ring_buffer_size: returns the size in bytes of each cpu buffer.
	Note, the real size is this times the number of CPUs.

ring_buffer_reset_cpu: Sets the cpu buffer to empty
ring_buffer_reset: sets all cpu buffers to empty

ring_buffer_swap_cpu: swaps a cpu buffer from one buffer with a
	cpu buffer of another buffer. This is handy when you
	want to take a snap shot of a running trace on just one
	cpu. Having a backup buffer, to swap with facilitates this.
	Ftrace max latencies use this.

ring_buffer_empty: Returns true if the ring buffer is empty.
ring_buffer_empty_cpu: Returns true if the cpu buffer is empty.

ring_buffer_record_disable: disable all cpu buffers (read only)
ring_buffer_record_disable_cpu: disable a single cpu buffer (read only)
ring_buffer_record_enable: enable all cpu buffers.
ring_buffer_record_enabl_cpu: enable a single cpu buffer.

ring_buffer_entries: The number of entries in a ring buffer.
ring_buffer_overruns: The number of entries removed due to writing wrap.

ring_buffer_time_stamp: Get the time stamp used by the ring buffer
ring_buffer_normalize_time_stamp: normalize the ring buffer time stamp
	into nanosecs.

I still need to implement the GTOD feature. But we need support from
the cpu frequency infrastructure. But this can be done at a later
time without affecting the ring buffer interface.

Frédéric Weisbecker d13744cd6e tracing/ftrace: add the boot tracer
Add the boot/initcall tracer.

It's primary purpose is to be able to trace the initcalls.

It is intended to be used with scripts/bootgraph.pl after some small
improvements.

Note that it is not active after its init. To avoid tracing (and so
crashing) before the whole tracing engine init, you have to explicitly
call start_boot_trace() after do_pre_smp_initcalls() to enable it.

Steven Rostedt 3b47bfc1fc ftrace: remove direct reference to mcount in trace code
The mcount record method of ftrace scans objdump for references to mcount.
Using mcount as the reference to test if the calls to mcount being replaced
are indeed calls to mcount, this use of mcount was also caught as a
location to change. Using a variable that points to the mcount address
moves this reference into the data section that is not scanned, and
we do not use a false location to try and modify.

The new design of pre-recorded mcounts and updating the code outside of
kstop_machine has changed the way the records themselves are protected.

This patch uses the ftrace_lock to protect the records. Note, the lock
still does not need to be taken within calls that are only called via
kstop_machine, since the that code can not run while the spin lock is held.

Also removed the hash_lock needed for the daemon when MCOUNT_RECORD is
configured. Also did a slight cleanup of an unused variable.

Steven Rostedt 3f5a54e371 ftrace: dump out ftrace buffers to console on panic
At OLS I had a lot of interest to be able to have the ftrace buffers
dumped on panic. Usually one would expect to uses kexec and examine
the buffers after a new kernel is loaded. But sometimes the resources
do not permit kdump and kexec, so having an option to still see the
sequence of events up to the crash is very advantageous.

This patch adds the option to have the ftrace buffers dumped to the
console in the latency_trace format on a panic. When the option is set,
the default entries per CPU buffer are lowered to 16384, since the writing
to the serial (if that is the console) may take an awful long time
otherwise.

Steven Rostedt 2f2c99dba2 ftrace: ftrace_printk doc moved
Based on Randy Dunlap's suggestion, the ftrace_printk kernel-doc belongs
with the ftrace_printk macro that should be used. Not with the
__ftrace_printk internal function.

Steven Rostedt dd0e545f06 ftrace: printk formatting infrastructure
This patch adds a feature that can help kernel developers debug their
code using ftrace.

  int ftrace_printk(const char *fmt, ...);

This records into the ftrace buffer using printf formatting. The entry
size in the buffers are still a fixed length. A new type has been added
that allows for more entries to be used for a single recording.

The start of the print is still the same as the other entries.

It returns the number of characters written to the ftrace buffer.

For example:

Having a module with the following code:

static int __init ftrace_print_test(void)
{
        ftrace_printk("jiffies are %ld\n", jiffies);
        return 0;
}

Gives me:

  insmod-5441  3...1 7569us : ftrace_print_test: jiffies are 4296626666

for the latency_trace file and:

          insmod-5441  [03]  1959.370498: ftrace_print_test jiffies are 4296626666

for the trace file.

Note: Only the infrastructure should go into the kernel. It is to help
facilitate debugging for other kernel developers. Calls to ftrace_printk
is not intended to be left in the kernel, and should be frowned upon just
like scattering printks around in the code.

But having this easily at your fingertips helps the debugging go faster
and bugs be solved quicker.

Maybe later on, we can hook this with markers and have their printf format
be sucked into ftrace output.

Steven Rostedt 2e2ca155cd ftrace: new continue entry - separate out from trace_entry
Some tracers will need to work with more than one entry. In order to do this
the trace_entry structure was split into two fields. One for the start of
all entries, and one to continue an existing entry.

The trace_entry structure now has a "field" entry that consists of the previous
content of the trace_entry, and a "cont" entry that is just a string buffer
the size of the "field" entry.

Thanks to Andrew Morton for suggesting this idea.

Steven Rostedt fed1939c64 ftrace: remove old pointers to mcount
When a mcount pointer is recorded into a table, it is used to add or
remove calls to mcount (replacing them with nops). If the code is removed
via removing a module, the pointers still exist. At modifying the code
a check is always made to make sure the code being replaced is the code
expected. In-other-words, the code being replaced is compared to what
it is expected to be before being replaced.

There is a very small chance that the code being replaced just happens
to look like code that calls mcount (very small since the call to mcount
is relative). To remove this chance, this patch adds ftrace_release to
allow module unloading to remove the pointers to mcount within the module.

Another change for init calls is made to not trace calls marked with
__init. The tracing can not be started until after init is done anyway.

This patch enables the loading of the __mcount_section of modules and

Steven Rostedt 68bf21aa15 ftrace: mcount call site on boot nops core
This is the infrastructure to the converting the mcount call sites
recorded by the __mcount_loc section into nops on boot. It also allows
for using these sites to enable tracing as normal. When the __mcount_loc
section is used, the "ftraced" kernel thread is disabled.

This uses the current infrastructure to record the mcount call sites
as well as convert them to nops. The mcount function is kept as a stub
on boot up and not converted to the ftrace_record_ip function. We use the
ftrace_record_ip to only record from the table.

This patch does not handle modules. That comes with a later patch.

Steven Rostedt 8da3821ba5 ftrace: create __mcount_loc section
This patch creates a section in the kernel called "__mcount_loc".
This will hold a list of pointers to the mcount relocation for
each call site of mcount.

For example:

objdump -dr init/main.o
[...]
Disassembly of section .text:

0000000000000000 <do_one_initcall>:
   0:   55                      push   %rbp
[...]
000000000000017b <init_post>:
 17b:   55                      push   %rbp
 17c:   48 89 e5                mov    %rsp,%rbp
 17f:   53                      push   %rbx
 180:   48 83 ec 08             sub    $0x8,%rsp
 184:   e8 00 00 00 00          callq  189 <init_post+0xe>
                        185: R_X86_64_PC32      mcount+0xfffffffffffffffc
[...]

We will add a section to point to each function call.

   .section __mcount_loc,"a",@progbits
[...]
   .quad .text + 0x185
[...]

The offset to of the mcount call site in init_post is an offset from
the start of the section, and not the start of the function init_post.
The mcount relocation is at the call site 0x185 from the start of the
.text section.

  .text + 0x185  == init_post + 0xa

We need a way to add this __mcount_loc section in a way that we do not
lose the relocations after final link. The .text section here will
be attached to all other .text sections after final link and the
offsets will be meaningless. We need to keep track of where these
.text sections are.

To do this, we use the start of the first function in the section.
do_one_initcall. We can make a tmp.s file with this function as a reference
to the start of the .text section.

   .section __mcount_loc,"a",@progbits
[...]
   .quad do_one_initcall + 0x185
[...]

Then we can compile the tmp.s into a tmp.o

  gcc -c tmp.s -o tmp.o

And link it into back into main.o.

  ld -r main.o tmp.o -o tmp_main.o
  mv tmp_main.o main.o

But we have a problem. What happens if the first function in a section
is not exported, and is a static function. The linker will not let
the tmp.o use it. This case exists in main.o as well.

Disassembly of section .init.text:

0000000000000000 <set_reset_devices>:
   0:   55                      push   %rbp
   1:   48 89 e5                mov    %rsp,%rbp
   4:   e8 00 00 00 00          callq  9 <set_reset_devices+0x9>
                        5: R_X86_64_PC32        mcount+0xfffffffffffffffc

The first function in .init.text is a static function.

00000000000000a8 t __setup_set_reset_devices
000000000000105f t __setup_str_set_reset_devices
0000000000000000 t set_reset_devices

The lowercase 't' means that set_reset_devices is local and is not exported.
If we simply try to link the tmp.o with the set_reset_devices we end
up with two symbols: one local and one global.

 .section __mcount_loc,"a",@progbits
 .quad set_reset_devices + 0x10

00000000000000a8 t __setup_set_reset_devices
000000000000105f t __setup_str_set_reset_devices
0000000000000000 t set_reset_devices
                 U set_reset_devices

We still have an undefined reference to set_reset_devices, and if we try
to compile the kernel, we will end up with an undefined reference to
set_reset_devices, or even worst, it could be exported someplace else,
and then we will have a reference to the wrong location.

To handle this case, we make an intermediate step using objcopy.
We convert set_reset_devices into a global exported symbol before linking
it with tmp.o and set it back afterwards.

00000000000000a8 t __setup_set_reset_devices
000000000000105f t __setup_str_set_reset_devices
0000000000000000 T set_reset_devices

00000000000000a8 t __setup_set_reset_devices
000000000000105f t __setup_str_set_reset_devices
0000000000000000 T set_reset_devices

00000000000000a8 t __setup_set_reset_devices
000000000000105f t __setup_str_set_reset_devices
0000000000000000 t set_reset_devices

Now we have a section in main.o called __mcount_loc that we can place
somewhere in the kernel using vmlinux.ld.S and access it to convert
all these locations that call mcount into nops before starting SMP
and thus, eliminating the need to do this with kstop_machine.

Note, A well documented perl script (scripts/recordmcount.pl) is used
to do all this in one location.

Mike Travis 65c0118453 cpumask: Replace cpumask_of_cpu with cpumask_of_cpu_ptr
* This patch replaces the dangerous lvalue version of cpumask_of_cpu
    with new cpumask_of_cpu_ptr macros. These are patterned after the
    node_to_cpumask_ptr macros.

    In general terms, if there is a cpumask_of_cpu_map[] then a pointer to
    the cpumask_of_cpu_map[cpu] entry is used. The cpumask_of_cpu_map
    is provided when there is a large NR_CPUS count, reducing
    greatly the amount of code generated and stack space used for
    cpumask_of_cpu(). The pointer to the cpumask_t value is needed for
    calling set_cpus_allowed_ptr() to reduce the amount of stack space
    needed to pass the cpumask_t value.

    If there isn't a cpumask_of_cpu_map[], then a temporary variable is
    declared and filled in with value from cpumask_of_cpu(cpu) as well as
    a pointer variable pointing to this temporary variable. Afterwards,
    the pointer is used to reference the cpumask value. The compiler
    will optimize out the extra dereference through the pointer as well
    as the stack space used for the pointer, resulting in identical code.

    A good example of the orthogonal usages is in net/sunrpc/svc.c:

	case SVC_POOL_PERCPU:
	{
		unsigned int cpu = m->pool_to[pidx];
		cpumask_of_cpu_ptr(cpumask, cpu);

		*oldmask = current->cpus_allowed;
		set_cpus_allowed_ptr(current, cpumask);
		return 1;
	}
	case SVC_POOL_PERNODE:
	{
		unsigned int node = m->pool_to[pidx];
		node_to_cpumask_ptr(nodecpumask, node);

		*oldmask = current->cpus_allowed;
		set_cpus_allowed_ptr(current, nodecpumask);
		return 1;
	}

Things get weird between lockdep and ftrace because ftrace can be called
within lockdep internal code (via the mcount pointer) and lockdep can be
called with ftrace (via spin_locks).

Steven Rostedt 007c05d4d2 ftrace: move sched_switch enable after markers
We have two markers now that are enabled on sched_switch. One that records
the context switching and the other that records task wake ups. Currently
we enable the tracing first and then set the markers. This causes some
confusing traces:

# tracer: sched_switch
#
#           TASK-PID   CPU#    TIMESTAMP  FUNCTION
#              | |      |          |         |
       trace-cmd-3973  [00]   115.834817:   3973:120:R   +     3:  0:S
       trace-cmd-3973  [01]   115.834910:   3973:120:R   +     6:  0:S
       trace-cmd-3973  [02]   115.834910:   3973:120:R   +     9:  0:S
       trace-cmd-3973  [03]   115.834910:   3973:120:R   +    12:  0:S
       trace-cmd-3973  [02]   115.834910:   3973:120:R   +     9:  0:S
          <idle>-0     [02]   115.834910:      0:140:R ==>  3973:120:R

Here we see that trace-cmd with PID 3973 wakes up task 9 but the next line
shows the idle task doing a context switch to task 3973.

Enabling the tracing to _after_ the markers are set creates a much saner
output:

# tracer: sched_switch
#
#           TASK-PID   CPU#    TIMESTAMP  FUNCTION
#              | |      |          |         |

Steven Rostedt ad90c0e3ce ftrace: user update and disable dynamic ftrace daemon
In dynamic ftrace, the mcount function starts off pointing to a stub
function that just returns.

On start up, the call to the stub is modified to point to a "record_ip"
function. The job of the record_ip function is to add the function to
a pre-allocated hash list. If the function is already there, it simply is
ignored, otherwise it is added to the list.

Later, a ftraced daemon wakes up and calls kstop_machine if any functions
have been recorded, and changes the calls to the recorded functions to
a simple nop. If no functions were recorded, the daemon goes back to sleep.

The daemon wakes up once a second to see if it needs to update any newly
recorded functions into nops. Usually it does not, but if a lot of code
has been executed for the first time in the kernel, the ftraced daemon
will call kstop_machine to update those into nops.

The problem currently is that there's no way to stop the daemon from doing
this, and it can cause unneeded latencies (800us which for some is bothersome).

This patch adds a new file /debugfs/tracing/ftraced_enabled. If the daemon
is active, reading this will return "enabled\n" and "disabled\n" when the
daemon is not running. To disable the daemon, the user can echo "0" or
"disable" into this file, and "1" or "enable" to re-enable the daemon.

Since the daemon is used to convert the functions into nops to increase
the performance of the system, I also added that anytime something is
written into the ftraced_enabled file, kstop_machine will run if there
are new functions that have been detected that need to be converted.

This way the user can disable the daemon but still be able to control the
conversion of the mcount calls to nops by simply,

  "echo 0 > /debugfs/tracing/ftraced_enabled"

when they need to do more conversions.

To see the number of converted functions:

  "cat /debugfs/tracing/dyn_ftrace_total_info"

Abhishek Sagar 76094a2cf4 ftrace: distinguish kretprobe'd functions in trace logs
Tracing functions via ftrace which have a kretprobe installed on them, can produce misleading output in their trace logs. E.g, consider the correct trace of the following sequence:

do_IRQ()
{
~
  irq_enter();
~
}

Trace log (sample):
<idle>-0     [00] 4154504455.781616: irq_enter <- do_IRQ

But if irq_enter() has a kretprobe installed on it, the return value stored on the stack at each invocation is modified to divert the return to a kprobe trampoline function called kretprobe_trampoline(). So with this the trace would (currently) look like:

<idle>-0     [00] 4154504455.781616: irq_enter <- kretprobe_trampoline

Now this is quite misleading to the end user, as it suggests something that didn't actually happen. So just to avoid such misinterpretations, the inlined patch aims to output such a log as:

<idle>-0     [00] 4154504455.781616: irq_enter <- [unknown/kretprobe'd]

Steven Rostedt 41c52c0db9 ftrace: set_ftrace_notrace feature
While debugging latencies in the RT kernel, I found that it would be nice
to be able to filter away functions from the trace than just to filter
on functions.

I added a new interface to the debugfs tracing directory called

  set_ftrace_notrace

When dynamic frace is enabled, this lets you filter away functions that will
not be recorded in the trace. It is similar to adding 'notrace' to those
functions but by doing it without recompiling the kernel.

Here's how set_ftrace_filter and set_ftrace_notrace interact. Remember, if
set_ftrace_filter is set, it removes all functions from the trace execpt for
those listed in the set_ftrace_filter. set_ftrace_notrace will prevent those
functions from being traced.

If you were to set one function in both set_ftrace_filter and
set_ftrace_notrace and that function was the same, then you would end up
with an empty trace.

the set of functions to trace is:

  set_ftrace_filter == empty then

     all functions not in set_ftrace_notrace

  else

     set of the set_ftrace_filter and not in set of set_ftrace_notrace.

Pekka Paalanen 138295373c ftrace: mmiotrace update, #2
another weekend, another patch. This should apply on top of my previous patch
from March 23rd.

Summary of changes:
- Print PCI device list in output header
- work around recursive probe hits on SMP
- refactor dis/arm_kmmio_fault_page() and add check for page levels
- remove un/reference_kmmio(), the die notifier hook is registered
permanently into the list
- explicitly check for single stepping in die notifier callback

I have tested this version on my UP Athlon64 desktop with Nouveau, and
SMP Core 2 Duo laptop with the proprietary nvidia driver. Both systems
are 64-bit. One previously unknown bug crept into daylight: the ftrace
framework's output routines print the first entry last after buffer has
wrapped around.

The most important regressions compared to non-ftrace mmiotrace at this
time are:
- failure of trace_pipe file
- illegal lines in output file
- unaware of losing data due to buffer full

Personally I'd like to see these three solved before submitting to
mainline. Other issues may come up once we know when we lose events.

Pekka Paalanen bd8ac686c7 ftrace: mmiotrace, updates
here is a patch that makes mmiotrace work almost well within the tracing
framework. The patch applies on top of my previous patch. I have my own
output formatting in place now.

Summary of changes:
- fix the NULL dereference that was due to not calling tracing_reset()
- add print_line() callback into struct tracer
- implement print_line() for mmiotrace, producing up-to-spec text
- add my output header, but that is not really called in the right place
- rewrote the main structs in mmiotrace
- added two new trace entry types: TRACE_MMIO_RW and TRACE_MMIO_MAP
- made some functions in trace.c non-static
- check current==NULL in tracing_generic_entry_update()
- fix(?) comparison in trace_seq_printf()

Things seem to work fine except a few issues. Markers (text lines injected
into mmiotrace log) are missing, I did not feel hacking them in before we
have variable length entries. My output header is printed only for 'trace'
file, but not 'trace_pipe'. For some reason, despite my quick fix,
iter->trace is NULL in print_trace_line() when called from 'trace_pipe'
file, which means I don't get proper output formatting.

I only tried by loading nouveau.ko, which just detects the card, and that
is traced fine. I didn't try further. Map, two reads and unmap. Works
perfectly.

I am missing the information about overflows, I'd prefer to have a
counter for lost events. I didn't try, but I guess currently there is no
way of knowning when it overflows?

So, not too far from being fully operational, it seems :-)
And looking at the diffstat, there also is some 700-900 lines of user space
code that just became obsolete.

Steven Rostedt 3eefae994d ftrace: limit trace entries
Currently there is no protection from the root user to use up all of
memory for trace buffers. If the root user allocates too many entries,
the OOM killer might start kill off all tasks.

This patch adds an algorith to check the following condition:

 pages_requested > (freeable_memory + current_trace_buffer_pages) / 4

If the above is met then the allocation fails. The above prevents more
than 1/4th of freeable memory from being used by trace buffers.

To determine the freeable_memory, I made determine_dirtyable_memory in
mm/page-writeback.c global.

Special thanks goes to Peter Zijlstra for suggesting the above calculation.

Steven Rostedt a98a3c3fde ftrace: trace_entries to dynamically change trace buffer size
This patch adds /debug/tracing/trace_entries that allows users to
see as well as modify the number of trace entries the buffers hold.

The number of entries only increments in ENTRIES_PER_PAGE which is
calculated by the size of an entry with the number of entries that
can fit in a page. The user does not need to use an exact size, but
the entries will be rounded to one of the increments.

Trying to set the entries to 0 will return with -EINVAL.

To avoid race conditions, the modification of the buffer size can only
be done when tracing is completely disabled (current_tracer == none).

Steven Rostedt d15f57f23e ftrace: fix mutex unlock in trace output
If the trace output changes on reading the trace files, there is a chance
that the start function will return NULL. If the start function of a sequence
returns NULL the stop equivalent is not called. In this case, all locks
that are taken must be released even if they are released in the stop function.

This patch fixes a case that a mutex was not released on return of NULL
in the start sequence function.

Steven Rostedt 07a267cdd2 ftrace: add UNINTERRUPTIBLE state for kftraced on disable
When dynamic ftrace fails and sets itself disabled, the ftraced daemon
will go back to sleep everytime it wakes up. The setting of the
ftraced state to UNINTERRUPTIBLE is skipped in this process, and the
daemon takes up 100% of the CPU. This patch makes sure the ftraced daemon
sets itself to UNINTERRUPTIBLE in that loop.

Lock debugging enabled cause huge performance problems for tracing. Having
the lock verification happening for every function that is called
because mcount calls spin_lock can cripple the system.

This patch converts the spin_locks used by ftrace into raw_spin_locks.

Steven Rostedt c5f888cae4 ftrace: irqsoff use raw_smp_processor_id
This patch changes the use of __get_cpu_var to explicitly calling
raw_smp_processor_id and using the per_cpu() macro. On some debug
configurations, the use of __get_cpu_var may cause ftrace to trigger
and this can cause problems with the irqsoff tracing.

Steven Rostedt d05cdb25d8 ftrace: fix dynamic ftrace selftest
With the adding of the configuration changes in the Makefile to prevent
tracing of functions in the ftrace code, all tracing of all the ftrace
code has been removed. Unfortunately, one of the selftests, relied on
a function to be traced. With the new change, the function was no longer
traced and the test failed.

This patch separates out the test function into its own file so that
we can add the "-pg" flag to the compilation of that function and the
adding of the mcount call to that function.

Steven Rostedt 4fe8c3048c ftrace: printk and trace irqsoff and wakeups
printk called from wakeup critical timings and irqs off can
cause deadlocks since printk might do a wakeup itself. If the
call to printk happens with the runqueue lock held, it can
deadlock.

This patch protects the printk from being called in trace irqs off
with a test to see if the runqueue for the current CPU is locked.
If it is locked, the printk is skipped.

The wakeup always holds the runqueue lock, so the printk is
simply removed.

PowerPC is very fragile when it comes to use of function names

This patch chooses to use the names and not the addresses, and
makes ftrace consistent.

Steven Rostedt 6fb44b717c ftrace: add trace_function api for other tracers to use
A new check was added in the ftrace function that wont trace if the CPU
trace buffer is disabled. Unfortunately, other tracers used ftrace() to
write to the buffer after they disabled it. The new disable check makes
these calls into a nop.

This patch changes the __ftrace that is called without the check into a
new api for the other tracers to use, called "trace_function". The other
tracers use this interface instead when the trace CPU buffer is already
disabled.
