When the first time pynfs runs after rpc/nfsd startup, always get the warning,
"Got error: Connection closed"
I found the problem is caused by,
1. A new startup of nfsd, rpc.mountd, etc,
2. A rpc request from client (pynfs test, or normal mounting),
3. An ip_map cache is created but invalid, so upcall to rpc.mountd,
4. rpc.mountd process the ip_map upcall, before write the valid data to nfsd,
do auth_reload(), and check_useipaddr(),
5. For the first time, old_use_ipaddr = -1, it causes rpc.mountd do write_flush that doing cache_clean,
6. The ip_map cache will be treat as expired and clean,
7. When rpc.mountd write the valid data to nfsd, a new ip_map is created
and updated, the cache_check of old ip_map(doing the upcall) will
return -ETIMEDOUT.
8. RPC layer return SVC_CLOSE and close the xprt after commit 4d712ef1db

NeilBrown suggest in another email,
"If CACHE_VALID is not set, then there is no data in the cache item,
so there is nothing to expire. So it would be nice if cache items that
don't have CACHE_VALID are never treated as expired."

Replace C structure-based XDR decoding with pointer arithmetic.
Pointer arithmetic is considered more portable, and is used
throughout the kernel's existing XDR encoders. The gcc optimizer
generates similar assembler code either way.
Byte-swapping before a memory store on x86 typically results in an
instruction pipeline stall. Avoid byte-swapping when encoding a new
header.
svcrdma currently doesn't alter a connection's credit grant value
after the connection has been accepted, so it is effectively a
constant. Cache the byte-swapped value in a separate field.
Christoph suggested pulling the header encoding logic into the only
function that uses it.

We currently handle a client PROC_DESTROY request by turning it
CACHE_NEGATIVE, setting the expired time to now, and then waiting for
cache_clean to clean it up later. Since we forgot to set the cache's
nextcheck value, that could take up to 30 minutes. Also, though there's
probably no real bug in this case, setting CACHE_NEGATIVE directly like
this probably isn't a great idea in general.
So let's just remove the entry from the cache directly, and move this
bit of cache manipulation to a helper function.

The current sendto code appears to support clients that provide only
one of a Read list, a Write list, or a Reply chunk. My reading of
that code is that it doesn't support the following cases:
- Read list + Write list
- Read list + Reply chunk
- Write list + Reply chunk
- Read list + Write list + Reply chunk
The protocol allows more than one Read or Write chunk in those
lists. Some clients do send a Read list and Reply chunk
simultaneously. NFSv4 WRITE uses a Read list for the data payload,
and a Reply chunk because the GETATTR result in the reply can
contain a large object like an ACL.
Generalize one of the sendto code paths needed to support all of
the above cases, and attempt to ensure that only one pass is done
through the RPC Call's transport header to gather chunk list
information for building the reply.

Support Remote Invalidation. A private message is exchanged with
the client upon RDMA transport connect that indicates whether
Send With Invalidation may be used by the server to send RPC
replies. The invalidate_rkey is arbitrarily chosen from among
rkeys present in the RPC-over-RDMA header's chunk lists.
Send With Invalidate improves performance only when clients can
recognize, while processing an RPC reply, that an rkey has already
been invalidated. That has been submitted as a separate change.
In the future, the RPC-over-RDMA protocol might support Remote
Invalidation properly. The protocol needs to enable signaling

The ctxt's count field is overloaded to mean the number of pages in
the ctxt->page array and the number of SGEs in the ctxt->sge array.
Typically these two numbers are the same.
However, when an inline RPC reply is constructed from an xdr_buf
with a tail iovec, the head and tail often occupy the same page,
but each are DMA mapped independently. In that case, ->count equals
the number of pages, but it does not equal the number of SGEs.
There's one more SGE, for the tail iovec. Hence there is one more
DMA mapping than there are pages in the ctxt->page array.
This isn't a real problem until the server's iommu is enabled. Then
each RPC reply that has content in that iovec orphans a DMA mapping
that consists of real resources.
krb5i and krb5p always populate that tail iovec. After a couple
million sent krb5i/p RPC replies, the NFS server starts behaving
erratically. Reboot is needed to clear the problem.

This maximum is somewhat arbitrary. There's no fundamental

the rq_buffer pointer in struct rpc_rqst to the struct
rpcrdma_regbuf that controls that buffer, and then to the struct

This was done back in the day to avoid the need to add a per-rqst

I'm about to change the way regbuf's work to support larger inline

For xprtrdma, the RPC Call and Reply buffers are involved in real
I/O operations.
To start with, the DMA direction of the I/O for a Call is opposite
that of a Reply.
In the current arrangement, the Reply buffer address is on a
four-byte alignment just past the call buffer. Would be friendlier
on some platforms if that was at a DMA cache alignment instead.
Because the current arrangement allocates a single memory region
which contains both buffers, the RPC Reply buffer often contains a
page boundary in it when the Call buffer is large enough (which is
frequent).
It would be a little nicer for setting up DMA operations (and
possible registration of the Reply buffer) if the two buffers were
separated, well-aligned, and contained as few page boundaries as
possible.
Now, I could just pad out the single memory region used for the pair
of buffers. But frequently that would mean a lot of unused space to
ensure the Reply buffer did not have a page boundary.
Add a separate pointer to rpc_rqst that points right to the RPC
Reply buffer. This makes no difference to xprtsock, but it will help
xprtrdma in subsequent patches.

xprtrdma needs to allocate the Call and Reply buffers separately.
TBH, the reliance on using a single buffer for the pair of XDR
buffers is transport implementation-specific.
Instead of passing just the rq_buffer into the buf_free method, pass
the task structure and let buf_free take care of freeing both
XDR buffers at once.
There's a micro-optimization here. In the common case, both
xprt_release and the transport's buf_free method were checking if
rq_buffer was NULL. Now the check is done only once per RPC.

xprtrdma needs to allocate the Call and Reply buffers separately.
TBH, the reliance on using a single buffer for the pair of XDR
buffers is transport implementation-specific.
Transports that want to allocate separate Call and Reply buffers
will ignore the "size" argument anyway. Don't bother passing it.
The buf_alloc method can't return two pointers. Instead, make the
method's return value an error code, and set the rq_buffer pointer
in the method itself.
This gives call_allocate an opportunity to terminate an RPC instead
of looping forever when a permanent problem occurs. If a request is
just bogus, or the transport is in a state where it can't allocate
resources for any request, there needs to be a way to kill the RPC
right there and not loop.
This immediately fixes a rare problem in the backchannel send path,
which loops if the server happens to send a CB request whose
call+reply size is larger than a page (which it shouldn't do yet).
One more issue: looks like xprt_inject_disconnect was incorrectly
placed in the failure path in call_allocate. It needs to be in the
success path, as it is for other call-sites.

Trond made a change to the server's tcp logic that allows a fast
client to better take advantage of high bandwidth networks, but
may increase the risk that a single client could starve other
clients; a new sunrpc.svc_rpc_per_connection_limit parameter
should help mitigate this in the (hopefully unlikely) event this
becomes a problem in practice.

no use in production for now--don't build it unless you're doing

This changes the vfs dentry hashing to mix in the parent pointer at the
_beginning_ of the hash, rather than at the end.
That actually improves both the hash and the code generation, because we
can move more of the computation to the "static" part of the dcache
setup, and do less at lookup runtime.
It turns out that a lot of other hash users also really wanted to mix in
a base pointer as a 'salt' for the hash, and so the slightly extended
interface ends up working well for other cases too.
Users that want a string hash that is purely about the string pass in a
'salt' pointer of NULL.
* merge branch 'salted-string-hash':
fs/dcache.c: Save one 32-bit multiply in dcache lookup
vfs: make the string hashes salt the hash
A generic_cred can be used to look up a unx_cred or a gss_cred, so it's
not really safe to use the the generic_cred->acred->ac_flags to store
the NO_CRKEY_TIMEOUT flag. A lookup for a unx_cred triggered while the
KEY_EXPIRE_SOON flag is already set will cause both NO_CRKEY_TIMEOUT and
KEY_EXPIRE_SOON to be set in the ac_flags, leaving the user associated
with the auth_cred to be in a state where they're perpetually doing 4K
NFS_FILE_SYNC writes.
This can be reproduced as follows:
1. Mount two NFS filesystems, one with sec=krb5 and one with sec=sys.
They do not need to be the same export, nor do they even need to be from
the same NFS server. Also, v3 is fine.
$ sudo mount -o v3,sec=krb5 server1:/export /mnt/krb5
$ sudo mount -o v3,sec=sys server2:/export /mnt/sys
2. As the normal user, before accessing the kerberized mount, kinit with
a short lifetime (but not so short that renewing the ticket would leave
you within the 4-minute window again by the time the original ticket
expires), e.g.
$ kinit -l 10m -r 60m
3. Do some I/O to the kerberized mount and verify that the writes are
wsize, UNSTABLE:
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/krb5/file bs=1M count=1
4. Wait until you're within 4 minutes of key expiry, then do some more
I/O to the kerberized mount to ensure that RPC_CRED_KEY_EXPIRE_SOON gets
set. Verify that the writes are 4K, FILE_SYNC:
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/krb5/file bs=1M count=1
5. Now do some I/O to the sec=sys mount. This will cause
RPC_CRED_NO_CRKEY_TIMEOUT to be set:
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/sys/file bs=1M count=1
6. Writes for that user will now be permanently 4K, FILE_SYNC for that
user, regardless of which mount is being written to, until you reboot
the client. Renewing the kerberos ticket (assuming it hasn't already
expired) will have no effect. Grabbing a new kerberos ticket at this
point will have no effect either.
Move the flag to the auth->au_flags field (which is currently unused)
and rename it slightly to reflect that it's no longer associated with
the auth_cred->ac_flags. Add the rpc_auth to the arg list of
rpcauth_cred_key_to_expire and check the au_flags there too. Finally,
add the inode to the arg list of nfs_ctx_key_to_expire so we can
determine the rpc_auth to pass to rpcauth_cred_key_to_expire.

Direct data placement is not allowed when using flavors that
guarantee integrity or privacy. When such security flavors are in
effect, don't allow the use of Read and Write chunks for moving
individual data items. All messages larger than the inline threshold
are sent via Long Call or Long Reply.
On my systems (CX-3 Pro on FDR), for small I/O operations, the use
of Long messages adds only around 5 usecs of latency in each
direction.
Note that when integrity or encryption is used, the host CPU touches
every byte in these messages. Even if it could be used, data
movement offload doesn't buy much in this case.

The spec allows backchannels for multiple clients to share the same tcp

them. Similarly, we need the same xps.

rpciod can easily get congested due to the long list of queued rpc_tasks.
Having the receive queue wait in turn for those tasks to complete can
therefore be a bottleneck.
Address the problem by separating the workqueues into:
- rpciod: manages rpc_tasks
- xprtiod: manages transport related work.

We always mixed in the parent pointer into the dentry name hash, but we
did it late at lookup time. It turns out that we can simplify that
lookup-time action by salting the hash with the parent pointer early
instead of late.
A few other users of our string hashes also wanted to mix in their own
pointers into the hash, and those are updated to use the same mechanism.
Hash users that don't have any particular initial salt can just use the
NULL pointer as a no-salt.

Pull string hash improvements from George Spelvin:
"This series does several related things:
- Makes the dcache hash (fs/namei.c) useful for general kernel use.
(Thanks to Bruce for noticing the zero-length corner case)
- Converts the string hashes in <linux/sunrpc/svcauth.h> to use the
above.
- Avoids 64-bit multiplies in hash_64() on 32-bit platforms. Two
32-bit multiplies will do well enough.
- Rids the world of the bad hash multipliers in hash_32.
This finishes the job started in commit 689de1d6ca ("Minimal
fix-up of bad hashing behavior of hash_64()")
The vast majority of Linux architectures have hardware support for
32x32-bit multiply and so derive no benefit from "simplified"
multipliers.
The few processors that do not (68000, h8/300 and some models of
Microblaze) have arch-specific implementations added. Those
patches are last in the series.
- Overhauls the dcache hash mixing.
The patch in commit 0fed3ac866 ("namei: Improve hash mixing if
CONFIG_DCACHE_WORD_ACCESS") was an off-the-cuff suggestion.
Replaced with a much more careful design that's simultaneously
faster and better. (My own invention, as there was noting suitable
in the literature I could find. Comments welcome!)
- Modify the hash_name() loop to skip the initial HASH_MIX(). This
would let us salt the hash if we ever wanted to.
- Sort out partial_name_hash().
The hash function is declared as using a long state, even though
it's truncated to 32 bits at the end and the extra internal state
contributes nothing to the result. And some callers do odd things:
- fs/hfs/string.c only allocates 32 bits of state
- fs/hfsplus/unicode.c uses it to hash 16-bit unicode symbols not bytes
- Modify bytemask_from_count to handle inputs of 1..sizeof(long)
rather than 0..sizeof(long)-1. This would simplify users other
than full_name_hash"
Special thanks to Bruce Fields for testing and finding bugs in v1. (I
learned some humbling lessons about "obviously correct" code.)
On the arch-specific front, the m68k assembly has been tested in a
standalone test harness, I've been in contact with the Microblaze
maintainers who mostly don't care, as the hardware multiplier is never
omitted in real-world applications, and I haven't heard anything from
the H8/300 world"
* 'hash' of git://ftp.sciencehorizons.net/linux:
h8300: Add <asm/hash.h>
microblaze: Add <asm/hash.h>
m68k: Add <asm/hash.h>
<linux/hash.h>: Add support for architecture-specific functions
fs/namei.c: Improve dcache hash function
Eliminate bad hash multipliers from hash_32() and hash_64()
Change hash_64() return value to 32 bits
<linux/sunrpc/svcauth.h>: Define hash_str() in terms of hashlen_string()
fs/namei.c: Add hashlen_string() function
Pull out string hash to <linux/stringhash.h>
Finally, the first use of previous two patches: eliminate the
separate ad-hoc string hash functions in the sunrpc code.
Now hash_str() is a wrapper around hash_string(), and hash_mem() is
likewise a wrapper around full_name_hash().
Note that sunrpc code *does* call hash_mem() with a zero length, which
is why the previous patch needed to handle that in full_name_hash().
(Thanks, Bruce, for finding that!)
This also eliminates the only caller of hash_long which asks for
more than 32 bits of output.
The comment about the quality of hashlen_string() and full_name_hash()
is jumping the gun by a few patches; they aren't very impressive now,
but will be improved greatly later in the series.

Currently the sysctls that allow setting the inline threshold allow

Small values only make the transport run slower. The default 1KB

assumes (but does not check) that the lower bound is not crazy (say,

Send and receive buffers share a page with some control information.

Sometimes we might have a RCU managed credential pointer and don't want
to use locking to handle it. Add a function that will take a reference
to the cred iff the refcount is not already zero. Callers can dereference
the pointer under the rcu_read_lock and use that function to take a
reference only if the cred is not on its way to destruction.

Calling ib_poll_cq() to sort through WCs during a completion is a
common pattern amongst RDMA consumers. Since commit 14d3a3b249
("IB: add a proper completion queue abstraction"), WC sorting can
be handled by the IB core.
By converting to this new API, svcrdma is made a better neighbor to
other RDMA consumers, as it allows the core to schedule the delivery
of completions more fairly amongst all active consumers.
This new API also aims each completion at a function that is
specific to the WR's opcode. Thus the ctxt->wr_op field and the
switch in process_context is replaced by a set of methods that
handle each completion type.
Because each ib_cqe carries a pointer to a completion method, the
core can now post operations on a consumer's QP, and handle the
completions itself.
The server's rdma_stat_sq_poll and rdma_stat_sq_prod metrics are no
longer updated.
As a clean up, the cq_event_handler, the dto_tasklet, and all
associated locking is removed, as they are no longer referenced or
used.

When constructing an error reply, svc_rdma_xdr_encode_error()
needs to view the client's request message so it can get the
failing request's XID.
svc_rdma_xdr_decode_req() is supposed to return a pointer to the
client's request header. But if it fails to decode the client's
message (and thus an error reply is needed) it does not return the
pointer. The server then sends a bogus XID in the error reply.
Instead, unconditionally generate the pointer to the client's header
in svc_rdma_recvfrom(), and pass that pointer to both functions.

Fix several issues with svc_rdma_send_error():
- Post a receive buffer to replace the one that was consumed by
the incoming request
- Posting a send should use DMA_TO_DEVICE, not DMA_FROM_DEVICE
- No need to put_page _and_ free pages in svc_rdma_put_context
- Make sure the sge is set up completely in case the error
path goes through svc_rdma_unmap_dma()
- Replace the use of ENOSYS, which has a reserved meaning
Related fixes in svc_rdma_recvfrom():
- Don't leak the ctxt associated with the incoming request
- Don't close the connection after sending an error reply
- Let svc_rdma_send_error() figure out the right header error code
As a last clean up, move svc_rdma_send_error() to svc_rdma_sendto.c
with other similar functions. There is some common logic in these
functions that could someday be combined to reduce code duplication.

The maximum size of a backchannel message on RPC-over-RDMA depends
on the connection's inline threshold. Today that threshold is
typically 1024 bytes, making the maximum message size 996 bytes.
The Linux server's CREATE_SESSION operation checks that the size
of callback Calls can be as large as 1044 bytes, to accommodate
RPCSEC_GSS. Thus CREATE_SESSION fails if a client advertises the
true message size maximum of 996 bytes.
But the server's backchannel currently does not support RPCSEC_GSS.
The actual maximum size it needs is much smaller. It is safe to
reduce the limit to enable NFSv4.1 on RDMA backchannel operation.

The NFS server's XDR encoders adds an XDR pad for content in the
xdr_buf page list at the beginning of the xdr_buf's tail buffer.
On RDMA transports, Write chunks are sent separately and without an
XDR pad.
If a Write chunk is being sent, strip off the pad in the tail buffer
so that inline content following the Write chunk remains XDR-aligned
when it is sent to the client.

Extra resources for handling backchannel requests have to be
pre-allocated when a transport instance is created. Set up
additional fields in svcxprt_rdma to track these resources.
The max_requests fields are elements of the RPC-over-RDMA
protocol, so they should be u32. To ensure that unsigned
arithmetic is used everywhere, some other fields in the
svcxprt_rdma struct are updated.

svc_rdma_post_recv() allocates pages for receive buffers on-demand.
It uses GFP_KERNEL so the allocator tries hard, and may sleep. But
I'm about to add a call to svc_rdma_post_recv() from a function
that may not sleep.
Since all svc_rdma_post_recv() call sites can tolerate its failure,
allow it to fail if the page allocator returns nothing. Longer term,
receive buffers, being a finite resource per-connection, should be
pre-allocated and re-used.

When the maximum payload size of NFS READ and WRITE was increased
by commit cc9a903d91 ("svcrdma: Change maximum server payload back
to RPCSVC_MAXPAYLOAD"), the size of struct svc_rdma_op_ctxt
increased to over 6KB (on x86_64). That makes allocating one of
these from a kmem_cache more likely to fail in situations when
system memory is exhausted.
Since I'm about to add a caller where this allocation must always
work _and_ it cannot sleep, pre-allocate ctxts for each connection.
Another motivation for this change is that NFSv4.x servers are
required by specification not to drop NFS requests. Pre-allocating
memory resources reduces the likelihood of a drop.

Add a function svc_age_temp_xprts_now() to close temporary transports
whose xpt_local matches the address passed in server_addr immediately
instead of waiting for them to be closed by the timer function.
The function is intended to be used by notifier_blocks that will be
added to nfsd and lockd that will run when an ip address is deleted.
This will eliminate the ACK storms and client hangs that occur in
HA-NFS configurations where nfsd & lockd is left running on the cluster
nodes all the time and the NFS 'service' is migrated back and forth
within a short timeframe.

The principal name on a gss cred is used to setup the NFSv4.0 callback,
which has to have a client principal name to authenticate to.
That code wants the name to be in the form servicetype@hostname.
rpc.svcgssd passes down such names (and passes down no principal name at
all in the case the principal isn't a service principal).
gss-proxy always passes down the principal name, and passes it down in
the form servicetype/hostname@REALM. So we've been munging the name
gss-proxy passes down into the format the NFSv4.0 callback code expects,
or throwing away the name if we can't.
Since the introduction of the MACH_CRED enforcement in NFSv4.1, we've
also been using the principal name to verify that certain operations are
done as the same principal as was used on the original EXCHANGE_ID call.
For that application, the original name passed down by gss-proxy is also
useful.
Lack of that name in some cases was causing some kerberized NFSv4.1
mount failures in an Active Directory environment.
This fix only works in the gss-proxy case. The fix for legacy
rpc.svcgssd would be more involved, and rpc.svcgssd already has other
problems in the AD case.

xprt_{setup,destroy}_backchannel() won't be adequate for RPC/RMDA
bi-direction. In particular, receive buffers have to be pre-
registered and posted in order to receive incoming backchannel
requests.
Add a virtual function call to allow the insertion of appropriate
backchannel setup and destruction methods for each transport.
In addition, freeing a backchannel request is a little different
for RPC/RDMA. Introduce an rpc_xprt_op to handle the difference.

The caches used to store sunrpc authentication information can be
flushed by writing a timestamp to a file in /proc.
This timestamp has a one-second resolution and any entry in cache that
was last_refreshed *before* that time is treated as expired.
This is problematic as it is not possible to reliably flush the cache
without interrupting NFS service.
If the current time is written to the "flush" file, any entry that was
added since the current second started will still be treated as valid.
If one second beyond than the current time is written to the file
then no entries can be valid until the second ticks over. This will
mean that no NFS request will be handled for up to 1 second.
To resolve this issue we make two changes:
1/ treat an entry as expired if the timestamp when it was last_refreshed
is before *or the same as* the expiry time. This means that current
code which writes out the current time will now flush the cache
reliably.
2/ when a new entry in added to the cache - set the last_refresh timestamp
to 1 second *beyond* the current flush time, when that not in the
past.
This ensures that newly added entries will always be valid.
Now that we have a very reliable way to flush the cache, and also
since we are using "since-boot" timestamps which are monotonic,
change cache_purge() to set the smallest future flush_time which
will work, and leave it there: don't revert to '1'.
Also disable the setting of the 'flush_time' far into the future.
That has never been useful and is now awkward as it would cause
last_refresh times to be strange.
Finally: if a request is made to set the 'flush_time' to the current
second, assume the intent is to flush the cache and advance it, if
necessary, to 1 second beyond the current 'flush_time' so that all
active entries will be deemed to be expired.
As part of this we need to add a 'cache_detail' arg to cache_init()
and cache_fresh_locked() so they can find the current ->flush_time.

Stream protocols such as TCP can often build up a backlog of data to be
read due to ordering. Combine this with the fact that some workloads such
as NFS read()-intensive workloads need to receive a lot of data per RPC
call, and it turns out that receiving the data from inside a softirq
context can cause starvation.
The following patch moves the TCP data receive into a workqueue context.
We still end up calling tcp_read_sock(), but we do so from a process
context, meaning that softirqs are enabled for most of the time.
With this patch, I see a doubling of read bandwidth when running a
multi-threaded iozone workload between a virtual client and server setup.

Commit 718ba5b873, moved the responsibility for unlocking the socket to
xs_tcp_setup_socket, meaning that the socket will be unlocked before we
know that it has finished trying to connect. The following patch is based on
an initial patch by Russell King to ensure that we delay clearing the
XPRT_CONNECTING flag until we either know that we failed to initiate
a connection attempt, or the connection attempt itself failed.

decent amount of testing prior to sending the pull request due to
that.
There are still a few fixups that I know are coming, but I wanted to
go ahead and get the big, sizable chunk into your hands sooner rather
than waiting for those last few fixups.
Of note is the fact that this creates what is intended to be a
temporary area in the drivers/staging tree specifically for some
cleanups and additions that are coming for the RDMA stack. We
deprecated two drivers (ipath and amso1100) and are waiting to hear
back if we can deprecate another one (ehca). We also put Intel's new
hfi1 driver into this area because it needs to be refactored and a
transfer library created out of the factored out code, and then it and
the qib driver and the soft-roce driver should all be modified to use
that library.
I expect drivers/staging/rdma to be around for three or four kernel
releases and then to go away as all of the work is completed and final
deletions of deprecated drivers are done.
Summary of changes for 4.3:

The current limit of 32 bytes artificially limits the name string that
we end up stuffing into NFSv4.x client ID blobs. If you have multiple
hosts with long hostnames that only differ near the end, then this can
cause NFSv4 client ID collisions.
Linux nodenames are actually limited to __NEW_UTS_LEN bytes (64), so use
that as the limit instead. Also, use XDR_QUADLEN to specify the slack
length, just for clarity and in case someone in the future changes this
to something not evenly divisible by 4.

Both commit 0380a3f375 ("svcrdma: Add a separate "max data segs"
macro for svcrdma") and commit 7e5be28827 ("svcrdma: advertise
the correct max payload") are incorrect. This commit reverts both
changes, restoring the server's maximum payload size to 1MB.
Commit 7e5be28827 based the server's maximum payload on the
_client's_ RPCRDMA_MAX_DATA_SEGS value. That was wrong.
Commit 0380a3f375 tried to fix this so that the client maximum
payload size could be raised without affecting the server, but
managed to confuse matters more on the server side.
More importantly, limiting the advertised maximum payload size was
meant to be a workaround, not the actual fix. We need to revisit

It has been exceptionally useful to exercise the logic that handles
local immediate errors and RDMA connection loss. To enable
developers to test this regularly and repeatably, add logic to
simulate connection loss every so often.
Fault injection is disabled by default. It is enabled with
$ sudo echo xxx > /sys/kernel/debug/sunrpc/inject_fault/disconnect
where "xxx" is a large positive number of transport method calls
before a disconnect. A value of several thousand is usually a good
number that allows reasonable forward progress while still causing a
lot of connection drops.

RDMA xprts don't have a sock_xprt, but an rdma_xprt, so the
xs_swapper_enable/disable functions will likely oops when fed an RDMA
xprt. Turn these functions into rpc_xprt_ops so that that doesn't
occur. For now the RDMA versions are no-ops that just return -EINVAL

Split xs_swapper into enable/disable functions and eliminate the

Currently, it's racy if you have multiple swapon/swapoff operations
running in parallel over the same xprt. Also fix it so that we only

Jerome reported seeing a warning pop when working with a swapfile on
NFS. The nfs_swap_activate can end up calling sk_set_memalloc while
holding the rcu_read_lock and that function can sleep.
To fix that, we need to take a reference to the xprt while holding the
rcu_read_lock, set the socket up for swapping and then drop that
reference. But, xprt_put is not exported and having NFS deal with the
underlying xprt is a bit of layering violation anyway.
Fix this by adding a set of activate/deactivate functions that take a
rpc_clnt pointer instead of an rpc_xprt, and have nfs_swap_activate and
nfs_swap_deactivate call those.
Also, add a per-rpc_clnt atomic counter to keep track of the number of
active swapfiles associated with it. When the counter does a 0->1
transition, we enable swapping on the xprt, when we do a 1->0 transition
we disable swapping on it.
This also allows us to be a bit more selective with the RPC_TASK_SWAPPER
flag. If non-swapper and swapper clnts are sharing a xprt, then we only
need to flag the tasks from the swapper clnt with that flag.

v2: gracefully handle the case where some dentry pointers end up NULL
and be more dilligent about zeroing out dentry pointers
We currently have a problem that SELinux policy is being enforced when
creating debugfs files. If a debugfs file is created as a side effect of
doing some syscall, then that creation can fail if the SELinux policy
for that process prevents it.
This seems wrong. We don't do that for files under /proc, for instance,
so Bruce has proposed a patch to fix that.
While discussing that patch however, Greg K.H. stated:
"No kernel code should care / fail if a debugfs function fails, so
please fix up the sunrpc code first."
This patch converts all of the sunrpc debugfs setup code to be void
return functins, and the callers to not look for errors from those
functions.
This should allow rpc_clnt and rpc_xprt creation to work, even if the
kernel fails to create debugfs files for some reason.

The socket lock is currently held by the task that is requesting the
connection be established. While that is efficient in the case where
the connection happens quickly, it is racy in the case where it doesn't.
What we really want is for the connect helper to be able to block access
to the socket while it is being set up.
This patch does so by arranging to transfer the socket lock from the
task that is requesting the connect attempt, and then releasing that
lock once everything is done.
This scheme also gives us automatic protection against collisions with
the RPC close code, so we can kill the cancel_delayed_work_sync()
call in xs_close().

Currently the Linux server can not decode RDMA_NOMSG type requests.
Operations whose length exceeds the fixed size of RDMA SEND buffers,
like large NFSv4 CREATE(NF4LNK) operations, must be conveyed via
RDMA_NOMSG.
For an RDMA_MSG type request, the client sends the RPC/RDMA, RPC
headers, and some or all of the NFS arguments via RDMA SEND.
For an RDMA_NOMSG type request, the client sends just the RPC/RDMA
header via RDMA SEND. The request's read list contains elements for
the entire RPC message, including the RPC header.
NFSD expects the RPC/RMDA header and RPC header to be contiguous in
page zero of the XDR buffer. Add logic in the RDMA READ path to make
the read list contents land where the server prefers, when the
incoming message is a type RDMA_NOMSG message.

Testing has shown that the pool->sp_lock can be a bottleneck on a busy
server. Every time data is received on a socket, the server must take
that lock in order to dequeue a thread from the sp_threads list.
Address this problem by eliminating the sp_threads list (which contains
threads that are currently idle) and replacing it with a RQ_BUSY flag in
svc_rqst. This allows us to walk the sp_all_threads list under the
rcu_read_lock and find a suitable thread for the xprt by doing a
test_and_set_bit.
Note that we do still have a potential atomicity problem however with
this approach. We don't want svc_xprt_do_enqueue to set the
rqst->rq_xprt pointer unless a test_and_set_bit of RQ_BUSY returned
zero (which indicates that the thread was idle). But, by the time we
check that, the bit could be flipped by a waking thread.
To address this, we acquire a new per-rqst spinlock (rq_lock) and take
that before doing the test_and_set_bit. If that returns false, then we
can set rq_xprt and drop the spinlock. Then, when the thread wakes up,
it must set the bit under the same spinlock and can trust that if it was
already set then the rq_xprt is also properly set.
With this scheme, the case where we have an idle thread no longer needs
to take the highly contended pool->sp_lock at all, and that removes the
bottleneck.
That still leaves one issue: What of the case where we walk the whole
sp_all_threads list and don't find an idle thread? Because the search is
lockess, it's possible for the queueing to race with a thread that is
going to sleep. To address that, we queue the xprt and then search again.
If we find an idle thread at that point, we can't attach the xprt to it
directly since that might race with a different thread waking up and
finding it. All we can do is wake the idle thread back up and let it
attempt to find the now-queued xprt.

Add a new directory heirarchy under the debugfs sunrpc/ directory:
sunrpc/

<xprt id>/
Within that directory, we can put files that give info about the
xprts. We do have the (minor) problem that there is no succinct,
unique identifier for rpc_xprts. So we generate them synthetically
with a static atomic_t counter.
For now, this directory just holds an "info" file, but we may add

It's possible to get a dump of the RPC task queue by writing a value to
/proc/sys/sunrpc/rpc_debug. If you write any value to that file, you get
a dump of the RPC client task list into the log buffer. This is a rather
inconvenient interface however, and makes it hard to get immediate info
about the task queue.
Add a new directory hierarchy under debugfs:
sunrpc/
rpc_clnt/
<clientid>/
Within each clientid directory we create a new "tasks" file that will
dump info similar to what shows up in the log buffer, but with a few
small differences -- we avoid printing raw kernel addresses in favor of
symbolic names and the XID is also displayed.

The new flag RPCAUTH_LOOKUP_RCU to credential lookup avoids locking,
does not take a reference on the returned credential, and returns
-ECHILD if a simple lookup was not possible.
The returned value can only be used within an rcu_read_lock protected
region.
The main user of this is the new rpc_lookup_cred_nonblock() which
returns a pointer to the current credential which is only rcu-safe (no
ref-count held), and might return -ECHILD if allocation was required.

The RDMA credit limit controls how many concurrent RPCs are allowed
per connection.
An NFS/RDMA client and server exchange their credit limits in the
RPC/RDMA headers. The Linux client and the Solaris client and server
allow 32 credits. The Linux server allows only 16, which limits its
performance.
Set the server's default credit limit to 32, like the other well-
known implementations, so the out-of-the-shrinkwrap performance of
the Linux server is better.

The current code always selects XPRT_TRANSPORT_BC_TCP for the back
channel, even when the forward channel was not TCP (eg, RDMA). When
a 4.1 mount is attempted with RDMA, the server panics in the TCP BC
code when trying to send CB_NULL.
Instead, construct the transport protocol number from the forward
channel transport or'd with XPRT_TRANSPORT_BC. Transports that do
not support bi-directional RPC will not have registered a "BC"
transport, causing create_backchannel_client() to fail immediately.

It is currently not possible for various wait_on_bit functions
to implement a timeout.
While the "action" function that is called to do the waiting
could certainly use schedule_timeout(), there is no way to carry
forward the remaining timeout after a false wake-up.
As false-wakeups a clearly possible at least due to possible
hash collisions in bit_waitqueue(), this is a real problem.
The 'action' function is currently passed a pointer to the word
containing the bit being waited on. No current action functions
use this pointer. So changing it to something else will be a
little noisy but will have no immediate effect.
This patch changes the 'action' function to take a pointer to
the "struct wait_bit_key", which contains a pointer to the word
containing the bit so nothing is really lost.
It also adds a 'private' field to "struct wait_bit_key", which
is initialized to zero.
An action function can now implement a timeout with something
like
static int timed_out_waiter(struct wait_bit_key *key)
{
unsigned long waited;
if (key->private == 0) {
key->private = jiffies;
if (key->private == 0)
key->private -= 1;
}
waited = jiffies - key->private;
if (waited > 10 * HZ)
return -EAGAIN;
schedule_timeout(waited - 10 * HZ);
return 0;
}
If any other need for context in a waiter were found it would be
easy to use ->private for some other purpose, or even extend
"struct wait_bit_key".
My particular need is to support timeouts in nfs_release_page()
to avoid deadlocks with loopback mounted NFS.
While wait_on_bit_timeout() would be a cleaner interface, it
will not meet my need. I need the timeout to be sensitive to
the state of the connection with the server, which could change.
So I need to use an 'action' interface.

An NFS/RDMA client's source port is meaningless for RDMA transports.
The transport layer typically sets the source port value on the
connection to a random ephemeral port.
Currently, NFS server administrators must specify the "insecure"
export option to enable clients to access exports via RDMA.
But this means NFS clients can access such an export via IP using an
ephemeral port, which may not be desirable.
This patch eliminates the need to specify the "insecure" export
option to allow NFS/RDMA clients access to an export.

Several spots in the kernel perform a sequence like:
skb_queue_tail(&sk->s_receive_queue, skb);
sk->sk_data_ready(sk, skb->len);
But at the moment we place the SKB onto the socket receive queue it
can be consumed and freed up. So this skb->len access is potentially
to freed up memory.
Furthermore, the skb->len can be modified by the consumer so it is
possible that the value isn't accurate.
And finally, no actual implementation of this callback actually uses
the length argument. And since nobody actually cared about it's
value, lots of call sites pass arbitrary values in such as '0' and
even '1'.
So just remove the length argument from the callback, that way there
is no confusion whatsoever and all of these use-after-free cases get
fixed as a side effect.

There could be a case, when NFSd file system is mounted in network, different
to socket's one, like below:
"ip netns exec" creates new network and mount namespace, which duplicates NFSd
mount point, created in init_net context. And thus NFS server stop in nested
network context leads to RPCBIND client destruction in init_net.
Then, on NFSd start in nested network context, rpc.nfsd process creates socket
in nested net and passes it into "write_ports", which leads to RPCBIND sockets
creation in init_net context because of the same reason (NFSd monut point was
created in init_net context). An attempt to register passed socket in nested
net leads to panic, because no RPCBIND client present in nexted network
namespace.
This patch add check that passed socket's net matches NFSd superblock's one.

account the fact that RPC callbacks are not always confined to a single

This patch adds support for multiple TCP segments by ensuring that we
only remove the rpc_rqst structure from the 'free backchannel requests'

NFSv4 clients can contact port 2049 directly instead of needing the
portmapper.
Therefore a failure to register to the portmapper when starting an
NFSv4-only server isn't really a problem.
But Gareth Williams reports that an attempt to start an NFSv4-only
server without starting portmap fails:
#rpc.nfsd -N 2 -N 3
rpc.nfsd: writing fd to kernel failed: errno 111 (Connection refused)
rpc.nfsd: unable to set any sockets for nfsd
Add a flag to svc_version to tell the rpc layer it can safely ignore an
rpcbind failure in the NFSv4-only case.

Now that we have a more reliable method to tell if gssd is running, we
can replace the sn->gssd_running flag with a function that will query to
see if it's up and running.
There's also no need to attempt an upcall that we know will fail, so
just return -EACCES if gssd isn't running. Finally, fix the warn_gss()
message not to claim that that the upcall timed out since we don't
necesarily perform one now when gssd isn't running, and remove the
extraneous newline from the message.

rpc.gssd will naturally hold open any pipe named */clnt*/gssd that shows
up under rpc_pipefs. That behavior gives us a reliable mechanism to tell
whether it's actually running or not.
Create a new toplevel "gssd" directory in rpc_pipefs when it's mounted.
Under that directory create another directory called "clntXX", and then
within that a pipe called "gssd".
We'll never send an upcall along that pipe, and any downcall written to
it will just return -EINVAL.

This patch provides the RPC layer helper functions to allow NFS to manage
data in the face of expired credentials - such as avoiding buffered WRITEs
and COMMITs when the gss context will expire before the WRITEs are flushed
and COMMITs are sent.
These helper functions enable checking the expiration of an underlying
credential key for a generic rpc credential, e.g. the gss_cred gss context
gc_expiry which for Kerberos is set to the remaining TGT lifetime.
A new rpc_authops key_timeout is only defined for the generic auth.
A new rpc_credops crkey_to_expire is only defined for the generic cred.
A new rpc_credops crkey_timeout is only defined for the gss cred.
Set a credential key expiry watermark, RPC_KEY_EXPIRE_TIMEO set to 240 seconds
as a default and can be set via a module parameter as we need to ensure there
is time for any dirty data to be flushed.
If key_timeout is called on a credential with an underlying credential key that
will expire within watermark seconds, we set the RPC_CRED_KEY_EXPIRE_SOON
flag in the generic_cred acred so that the NFS layer can clean up prior to
key expiration.
Checking a generic credential's underlying credential involves a cred lookup.
To avoid this lookup in the normal case when the underlying credential has
a key that is valid (before the watermark), a notify flag is set in
the generic credential the first time the key_timeout is called. The
generic credential then stops checking the underlying credential key expiry, and
the underlying credential (gss_cred) match routine then checks the key
expiration upon each normal use and sets a flag in the associated generic
credential only when the key expiration is within the watermark.
This in turn signals the generic credential key_timeout to perform the extra
credential lookup thereafter.

The current system requires everyone to set up notifiers, manage directory
locking, etc.
What we really want to do is have the rpc_client create its directory,
and then create all the entries.
This patch will allow the RPCSEC_GSS and NFS code to register all the
objects that they want to have appear in the directory, and then have
the sunrpc code call them back to actually create/destroy their pipefs
dentries when the rpc_client creates/destroys the parent.

1) The kernel sunrpc code needs to handle seconds since epoch
greater than 2147483647. This means functions that parse time
as an int need to handle it as time_t.
2) The kernel changes must be accompanied by userspace changes
in nfs-utils.

If rpcbind causes our connection to the AF_LOCAL socket to close after
we've registered a service, then we want to be careful about reconnecting
since the mount namespace may have changed.
By simply refusing to reconnect the AF_LOCAL socket in the case of
unregister, we avoid the need to somehow save the mount namespace. While
this may lead to some services not unregistering properly, it should
be safe.

commit d202cce896
sunrpc: never return expired entries in sunrpc_cache_lookup
moved the 'entry is expired' test from cache_check to
sunrpc_cache_lookup, so that it happened early and some races could
safely be ignored.
However the ip_map (in svcauth_unix.c) has a separate single-item
cache which allows quick lookup without locking. An entry in this
case would not be subject to the expiry test and so could be used
well after it has expired.
This is not normally a big problem because the first time it is used
after it is expired an up-call will be scheduled to refresh the entry
(if it hasn't been scheduled already) and the old entry will then
be invalidated. So on the second attempt to use it after it has
expired, ip_map_cached_get will discard it.
However that is subtle and not ideal, so replace the "!cache_valid"
test with "cache_is_expired".
In doing this we drop the test on the "CACHE_VALID" bit. This is
unnecessary as the bit is never cleared, and an entry will only
be cached if the bit is set.
