Oleg Nesterov c289b074b6 hrtimer: don't modify restart_block->fn in restart functions
hrtimer_nanosleep_restart() clears/restores restart_block->fn. This is
pointless and complicates its usage. Note that if sys_restart_syscall()
doesn't actually happen, we have a bogus "pending" restart->fn anyway,
this is harmless.

Oleg Nesterov 080344b988 hrtimer: fix *rmtp handling in hrtimer_nanosleep()
Spotted by Pavel Emelyanov and Alexey Dobriyan.

hrtimer_nanosleep() sets restart_block->arg1 = rmtp, but this rmtp points to
the local variable which lives in the caller's stack frame. This means that
if sys_restart_syscall() actually happens and it is interrupted as well, we
don't update the user-space variable, but write into the already dead stack
frame.

Introduced by commit 04c227140f
hrtimer: Rework hrtimer_nanosleep to make sys_compat_nanosleep easier

Change the callers to pass "__user *rmtp" to hrtimer_nanosleep(), and change
hrtimer_nanosleep() to use copy_to_user() to actually update *rmtp.

Small problem remains. man 2 nanosleep states that *rtmp should be written if
nanosleep() was interrupted (it says nothing whether it is OK to update *rmtp
if nanosleep returns 0), but (with or without this patch) we can dirty *rem
even if nanosleep() returns 0.

NOTE: this patch doesn't change compat_sys_nanosleep(), because it has other
bugs. Fixed by the next patch.

Davide Libenzi 4d672e7ac7 timerfd: new timerfd API
This is the new timerfd API as it is implemented by the following patch:

int timerfd_create(int clockid, int flags);
int timerfd_settime(int ufd, int flags,
		    const struct itimerspec *utmr,
		    struct itimerspec *otmr);
int timerfd_gettime(int ufd, struct itimerspec *otmr);

The timerfd_create() API creates an un-programmed timerfd fd. The "clockid"
parameter can be either CLOCK_MONOTONIC or CLOCK_REALTIME.

The timerfd_settime() API give new settings by the timerfd fd, by optionally
retrieving the previous expiration time (in case the "otmr" parameter is not
NULL).

The time value specified in "utmr" is absolute, if the TFD_TIMER_ABSTIME bit
is set in the "flags" parameter. Otherwise it's a relative time.

The timerfd_gettime() API returns the next expiration time of the timer, or
{0, 0} if the timerfd has not been set yet.

Like the previous timerfd API implementation, read(2) and poll(2) are
supported (with the same interface). Here's a simple test program I used to
exercise the new timerfd APIs:

Peter Zijlstra 3588a085cd hrtimer: fix hrtimer_init_sleeper() users
this patch:

     hrtimer: unlock hrtimer_wakeup

Broke hrtimer_init_sleeper() users. It forgot to fix up the futex
caller of this function to detect the failed queueing and messed up
the do_nanosleep() caller in that it could leak a TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE
state.

Peter Zijlstra 37bb6cb409 hrtimer: unlock hrtimer_wakeup
hrtimer_wakeup creates a

  base->lock
    rq->lock

lock dependancy. Avoid this by switching to HRTIMER_CB_IRQSAFE_NO_SOFTIRQ
which doesn't hold base->lock.

This fully untangles hrtimer locks from the scheduler locks, and allows
hrtimer usage in the scheduler proper.

Thomas Gleixner 62f0f61e66 hrtimers: avoid overflow for large relative timeouts
Relative hrtimers with a large timeout value might end up as negative
timer values, when the current time is added in hrtimer_start().

This in turn is causing the clockevents_set_next() function to set an
huge timeout and sleep for quite a long time when we have a clock
source which is capable of long sleeps like HPET. With PIT this almost
goes unnoticed as the maximum delta is ~27ms. The non-hrt/nohz code
sorts this out in the next timer interrupt, so we never noticed that
problem which has been there since the first day of hrtimers.

This bug became more apparent in 2.6.24 which activates HPET on more
hardware.

john stultz 17c38b7490 Cache xtime every call to update_wall_time
This avoids xtime lag seen with dynticks, because while 'xtime' itself
is still not updated often, we keep a 'xtime_cache' variable around that
contains the approximate real-time that _is_ updated each time we do a
'update_wall_time()', and is thus never off by more than one tick.

IOW, this restores the original semantics for 'xtime' users, as long as
you use the proper abstraction functions (ie 'current_kernel_time()' or
'get_seconds()' depending on whether you want a timespec or just the
seconds field).

[ Updated Patch. As penance for my sins I've also yanked another #ifdef
  that was added to avoid the xtime lag w/ hrtimers. ]

john stultz 2c6b47de17 Cleanup non-arch xtime uses, use get_seconds() or current_kernel_time().
This avoids use of the kernel-internal "xtime" variable directly outside
of the actual time-related functions. Instead, use the helper functions
that we already have available to us.

This doesn't actually change any behaviour, but this will allow us to
fix the fact that "xtime" isn't updated very often with CONFIG_NO_HZ
(because much of the realtime information is maintained as separate
offsets to 'xtime'), which has caused interfaces that use xtime directly
to get a time that is out of sync with the real-time clock by up to a
third of a second or so.

Rafael J. Wysocki 8bb7844286 Add suspend-related notifications for CPU hotplug
Since nonboot CPUs are now disabled after tasks and devices have been
frozen and the CPU hotplug infrastructure is used for this purpose, we need
special CPU hotplug notifications that will help the CPU-hotplug-aware
subsystems distinguish normal CPU hotplug events from CPU hotplug events
related to a system-wide suspend or resume operation in progress. This
patch introduces such notifications and causes them to be used during
suspend and resume transitions. It also changes all of the
CPU-hotplug-aware subsystems to take these notifications into consideration
(for now they are handled in the same way as the corresponding "normal"
ones).

  which lock already depends on the new lock.

This happens because we have the following code in kernel/hrtimer.c:

  migrate_hrtimers(int cpu)
  [...]
  old_base = &per_cpu(hrtimer_bases, cpu);
  new_base = &get_cpu_var(hrtimer_bases);
  [...]
  spin_lock(&new_base->lock);
  spin_lock(&old_base->lock);

Which means the spinlocks are taken in an order which depends on which cpu
gets shut down from which other cpu. Therefore lockdep complains that there
might be an ABBA deadlock. Since migrate_hrtimers() gets only called on
cpu hotplug it's safe to assume that it isn't executed concurrently on a

The same problem exists in kernel/timer.c: migrate_timers().

As pointed out by Christian Borntraeger one possible solution to avoid
the locking order complaints would be to make sure that the locks are
always taken in the same order. E.g. by taking the lock of the cpu with
the lower number first.

To achieve this we introduce two new spinlock functions double_spin_lock
and double_spin_unlock which lock or unlock two locks in a given order.

With Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu>

Add functions to provide dynamic ticks and high resolution timers. The code
which keeps track of jiffies and handles the long idle periods is shared
between tick based and high resolution timer based dynticks. The dyntick
functionality can be disabled on the kernel commandline. Provide also the
infrastructure to support high resolution timers.

Thomas Gleixner d316c57ff6 [PATCH] clockevents: add core functionality
Architectures register their clock event devices, in the clock events core.
Users of the clockevents core can get clock event devices for their use. The
clockevents core code provides notification mechanisms for various clock
related management events.

This allows to control the clock event devices without the architectures
having to worry about the details of function assignment. This is also a
preliminary for high resolution timers and dynamic ticks to allow the core
code to control the clock functionality without intrusive changes to the
architecture code.

Toyo Abe 1711ef3866 [PATCH] posix-timers: Fix clock_nanosleep() doesn't return the remaining time in compatibility mode
The clock_nanosleep() function does not return the time remaining when the
sleep is interrupted by a signal.

This patch creates a new call out, compat_clock_nanosleep_restart(), which
handles returning the remaining time after a sleep is interrupted. This
patch revives clock_nanosleep_restart(). It is now accessed via the new
call out. The compat_clock_nanosleep_restart() is used for compatibility
access.

Since this is implemented in compatibility mode the normal path is
virtually unaffected - no real performance impact.

Chandra Seetharaman 9c7b216d23 [PATCH] cpu hotplug: revert init patch submitted for 2.6.17
In 2.6.17, there was a problem with cpu_notifiers and XFS. I provided a
band-aid solution to solve that problem. In the process, i undid all the
changes you both were making to ensure that these notifiers were available
only at init time (unless CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU is defined).

We deferred the real fix to 2.6.18. Here is a set of patches that fixes the
XFS problem cleanly and makes the cpu notifiers available only at init time
(unless CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU is defined).

If CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU is defined then cpu notifiers are available at run
time.

Paul Mackerras bfe5d83419 [PATCH] Define __raw_get_cpu_var and use it
There are several instances of per_cpu(foo, raw_smp_processor_id()), which
is semantically equivalent to __get_cpu_var(foo) but without the warning
that smp_processor_id() can give if CONFIG_DEBUG_PREEMPT is enabled. For
those architectures with optimized per-cpu implementations, namely ia64,
powerpc, s390, sparc64 and x86_64, per_cpu() turns into more and slower
code than __get_cpu_var(), so it would be preferable to use __get_cpu_var
on those platforms.

This defines a __raw_get_cpu_var(x) macro which turns into per_cpu(x,
raw_smp_processor_id()) on architectures that use the generic per-cpu
implementation, and turns into __get_cpu_var(x) on the architectures that
have an optimized per-cpu implementation.

Roman Zippel 44f2147551 [PATCH] hrtimers: pass current time to hrtimer_forward()
Pass current time to hrtimer_forward(). This allows to use the softirq time
in the timer base when the forward function is called from the timer callback.
 Other places pass current time with a call to timer->base->get_time().

Thomas Gleixner 92127c7a45 [PATCH] hrtimers: optimize softirq runqueues
The hrtimer softirq is called from the timer softirq every tick. Retrieve the
current time from xtime and wall_to_monotonic instead of calling
base->get_time() for each timer base. Store the time in the base structure
and provide a hook once clock source abstractions are in place and to keep the
code open for new base clocks.

Tony Lindgren 69239749e1 [PATCH] fix next_timer_interrupt() for hrtimer
Also from Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>

Function next_timer_interrupt() got broken with a recent patch
6ba1b91213 as sys_nanosleep() was moved to
hrtimer. This broke things as next_timer_interrupt() did not check hrtimer
tree for next event.

Function next_timer_interrupt() is needed with dyntick (CONFIG_NO_IDLE_HZ,
VST) implementations, as the system can be in idle when next hrtimer event
was supposed to happen. At least ARM and S390 currently use
next_timer_interrupt().

Ingo Molnar 06027bdd27 [PATCH] hrtimer: round up relative start time on low-res arches
CONFIG_TIME_LOW_RES is a temporary way for architectures to signal that
they simply return xtime in do_gettimeoffset(). In this corner-case we
want to round up by resolution when starting a relative timer, to avoid
short timeouts. This will go away with the GTOD framework.

George Anzinger 7978672c4d [PATCH] hrtimers: cleanups and simplifications
Clean up the interface to hrtimers by changing the init code to pass the mode
as well as the clock. This allow the init code to select the correct base and
eliminates extra timer re-init code in posix-timers. We also simplify the
restart interface nanosleep use.

akpm@osdl.org ff60a5dc4f [PATCH] hrtimers: fix posix-timer requeue race
From: Steven Rostedtrostedt@goodmis.org <rostedt@goodmis.org>

CPU0 expires a posix-timer and runs the callback function. The signal is
queued.

After releasing the posix-timer lock and before returning to hrtimer_run_queue
CPU0 gets interrupted. CPU1 delivers the queued signal and rearms the timer.
CPU0 comes back to hrtimer_run_queue and sets the timer state to expired.

The next modification of the timer can result in an oops, because the state
information is wrong.

Keep track of state = RUNNING and check if the state has been in the return
path of hrtimer_run_queue. In case the state has been changed, ignore a
restart request and do not touch the state variable.

Thomas Gleixner 288867ec5c [hrtimer] Remove listhead from hrtimer struct
The list_head in the hrtimer structure was introduced for easy access
to the first timer with the further extensions of real high resolution

it is not necessary for the standard use case. Remove the list head
and access the first expiry timer by a datafield in the timer base.

Matt Helsley 69778e325c [PATCH] Export ktime_get_ts()
This series removes the getnstimestamp() function from kernel/time.c in favor
of kernel/hrtimer.c's ktime_get_ts() function which currently does exactly the
same thing: retrieves a high-resolution (ns) timespec structure and performs
the wall_to_monotonic adjustment.

This patch:

Export ktime_get_ts() to be used as a timestamp function since it uses
getnstimefoday() and does the wall_to_monotonic adjustment.
