Paul E. McKenney 6206ab9bab rcu: Move __rcu_read_unlock()'s barrier() within if-statement
We only need to constrain the compiler if we are actually exiting
the top-level RCU read-side critical section. This commit therefore
moves the first barrier() cal in __rcu_read_unlock() to inside the
"if" statement, thus avoiding needless register flushes for inner
rcu_read_unlock() calls.

Paul E. McKenney 6846c0c540 rcu: Improve rcu_assign_pointer() and RCU_INIT_POINTER() documentation
The differences between rcu_assign_pointer() and RCU_INIT_POINTER() are
subtle, and it is easy to use the the cheaper RCU_INIT_POINTER() when
the more-expensive rcu_assign_pointer() should have been used instead.
The consequences of this mistake are quite severe.

This commit therefore carefully lays out the situations in which it it
permissible to use RCU_INIT_POINTER().

Eric Dumazet d322f45cee rcu: Make rcu_assign_pointer() unconditionally insert a memory barrier
Recent changes to gcc give warning messages on rcu_assign_pointers()'s
checks that allow it to determine when it is OK to omit the memory
barrier. Stephen Hemminger tried a number of gcc tricks to silence
this warning, but #pragmas and CPP macros do not work together in the
way that would be required to make this work.

However, we now have RCU_INIT_POINTER(), which already omits this
memory barrier, and which therefore may be used when assigning NULL to
an RCU-protected pointer that is accessible to readers. This commit
therefore makes rcu_assign_pointer() unconditionally emit the memory
barrier.

Paul E. McKenney 990987511c rcu: Move rcu_head definition to types.h
Take a first step towards untangling Linux kernel header files by
placing the struct rcu_head definition into include/linux/types.h
and including include/linux/types.h in include/linux/rcupdate.h
where struct rcu_head used to be defined. The actual inclusion point
for include/linux/types.h is with the rest of the #include directives
rather than at the point where struct rcu_head used to be defined,
as suggested by Mathieu Desnoyers.

Once this is in place, then header files that need only rcu_head
can include types.h rather than rcupdate.h.

Paul E. McKenney b3fbab0571 rcu: Restore checks for blocking in RCU read-side critical sections
Long ago, using TREE_RCU with PREEMPT would result in "scheduling
while atomic" diagnostics if you blocked in an RCU read-side critical
section. However, PREEMPT now implies TREE_PREEMPT_RCU, which defeats
this diagnostic. This commit therefore adds a replacement diagnostic
based on PROVE_RCU.

Because rcu_lockdep_assert() and lockdep_rcu_dereference() are now being
used for things that have nothing to do with rcu_dereference(), rename
lockdep_rcu_dereference() to lockdep_rcu_suspicious() and add a third
argument that is a string indicating what is suspicious. This third
argument is passed in from a new third argument to rcu_lockdep_assert().
Update all calls to rcu_lockdep_assert() to add an informative third
argument.

Also, add a pair of rcu_lockdep_assert() calls from within
rcu_note_context_switch(), one complaining if a context switch occurs
in an RCU-bh read-side critical section and another complaining if a
context switch occurs in an RCU-sched read-side critical section.
These are present only if the PROVE_RCU kernel parameter is enabled.

Finally, fix some checkpatch whitespace complaints in lockdep.c.

Again, you must enable PROVE_RCU to see these new diagnostics. But you
are enabling PROVE_RCU to check out new RCU uses in any case, aren't you?

Lai Jiangshan 9ab1544eb4 rcu: introduce kfree_rcu()
Many rcu callbacks functions just call kfree() on the base structure.
These functions are trivial, but their size adds up, and furthermore
when they are used in a kernel module, that module must invoke the
high-latency rcu_barrier() function at module-unload time.

The kfree_rcu() function introduced by this commit addresses this issue.
Rather than encoding a function address in the embedded rcu_head
structure, kfree_rcu() instead encodes the offset of the rcu_head
structure within the base structure. Because the functions are not
allowed in the low-order 4096 bytes of kernel virtual memory, offsets
up to 4095 bytes can be accommodated. If the offset is larger than
4095 bytes, a compile-time error will be generated in __kfree_rcu().
If this error is triggered, you can either fall back to use of call_rcu()
or rearrange the structure to position the rcu_head structure into the
first 4096 bytes.

Note that the allowable offset might decrease in the future, for example,
to allow something like kmem_cache_free_rcu().

The new kfree_rcu() function can replace code as follows:

	call_rcu(&p->rcu, simple_kfree_callback);

where "simple_kfree_callback()" might be defined as follows:

	void simple_kfree_callback(struct rcu_head *p)
	{
		struct foo *q = container_of(p, struct foo, rcu);

		kfree(q);
	}

with the following:

	kfree_rcu(&p->rcu, rcu);

Note that the "rcu" is the name of a field in the structure being
freed. The reason for using this rather than passing in a pointer
to the base structure is that the above approach allows better type
checking.

This commit is based on earlier work by Lai Jiangshan and Manfred Spraul:

Paul E. McKenney b2c0710c46 rcu: move TINY_RCU from softirq to kthread
If RCU priority boosting is to be meaningful, callback invocation must
be boosted in addition to preempted RCU readers. Otherwise, in presence
of CPU real-time threads, the grace period ends, but the callbacks don't
get invoked. If the callbacks don't get invoked, the associated memory
doesn't get freed, so the system is still subject to OOM.

But it is not reasonable to priority-boost RCU_SOFTIRQ, so this commit
moves the callback invocations to a kthread, which can be boosted easily.

Paul E. McKenney 53ecfba259 rcu: only one evaluation of arg in rcu_dereference_check() unless sparse
The current version of the __rcu_access_pointer(), __rcu_dereference_check(),
and __rcu_dereference_protected() macros evaluate their "p" argument
three times, not counting typeof()s. This is bad news if that argument
contains a side effect. This commit therefore evaluates this argument

defeats sparse's RCU-pointer checking, so when __CHECKER__ is defined,
the additional pair of evaluations of the "p" argument are performed in
order to permit sparse to detect misuse of RCU-protected pointers.

Paul E. McKenney a57eb940d1 rcu: Add a TINY_PREEMPT_RCU
Implement a small-memory-footprint uniprocessor-only implementation of
preemptible RCU. This implementation uses but a single blocked-tasks
list rather than the combinatorial number used per leaf rcu_node by
TREE_PREEMPT_RCU, which reduces memory consumption and greatly simplifies
processing. This version also takes advantage of uniprocessor execution
to accelerate grace periods in the case where there are no readers.

The general design is otherwise broadly similar to that of TREE_PREEMPT_RCU.

This implementation is a step towards having RCU implementation driven
off of the SMP and PREEMPT kernel configuration variables, which can
happen once this implementation has accumulated sufficient experience.

Removed ACCESS_ONCE() from __rcu_read_unlock() and added barrier() as
suggested by Steve Rostedt in order to avoid the compiler-reordering
issue noted by Mathieu Desnoyers (http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/8/16/183).

As can be seen below, CONFIG_TINY_PREEMPT_RCU represents almost 5Kbyte
savings compared to CONFIG_TREE_PREEMPT_RCU. Of course, for non-real-time
workloads, CONFIG_TINY_RCU is even better.

Paul E. McKenney ca5ecddfa8 rcu: define __rcu address space modifier for sparse
This commit provides definitions for the __rcu annotation defined earlier.
This annotation permits sparse to check for correct use of RCU-protected
pointers. If a pointer that is annotated with __rcu is accessed
directly (as opposed to via rcu_dereference(), rcu_assign_pointer(),
or one of their variants), sparse can be made to complain. To enable
such complaints, use the new default-disabled CONFIG_SPARSE_RCU_POINTER
kernel configuration option. Please note that these sparse complaints are
intended to be a debugging aid, -not- a code-style-enforcement mechanism.

There are special rcu_dereference_protected() and rcu_access_pointer()
accessors for use when RCU read-side protection is not required, for
example, when no other CPU has access to the data structure in question
or while the current CPU hold the update-side lock.

Mathieu Desnoyers 551d55a944 tree/tiny rcu: Add debug RCU head objects
Helps finding racy users of call_rcu(), which results in hangs because list
entries are overwritten and/or skipped.

Changelog since v4:
- Bissectability is now OK
- Now generate a WARN_ON_ONCE() for non-initialized rcu_head passed to
  call_rcu(). Statically initialized objects are detected with
  object_is_static().
- Rename rcu_head_init_on_stack to init_rcu_head_on_stack.
- Remove init_rcu_head() completely.

Changelog since v3:
- Include comments from Lai Jiangshan

This new patch version is based on the debugobjects with the newly introduced
"active state" tracker.

Non-initialized entries are all considered as "statically initialized". An
activation fixup (triggered by call_rcu()) takes care of performing the debug
object initialization without issuing any warning. Since we cannot increase the
size of struct rcu_head, I don't see much room to put an identifier for
statically initialized rcu_head structures. So for now, we have to live without
"activation without explicit init" detection. But the main purpose of this debug
option is to detect double-activations (double call_rcu() use of a rcu_head
before the callback is executed), which is correctly addressed here.

This also detects potential internal RCU callback corruption, which would cause
the callbacks to be executed twice.

Paul E. McKenney bbad937983 rcu: slim down rcutiny by removing rcu_scheduler_active and friends
TINY_RCU does not need rcu_scheduler_active unless CONFIG_DEBUG_LOCK_ALLOC.

Lai Jiangshan 2b3fc35f69 rcu: optionally leave lockdep enabled after RCU lockdep splat
There is no need to disable lockdep after an RCU lockdep splat,
so remove the debug_lockdeps_off() from lockdep_rcu_dereference().
To avoid repeated lockdep splats, use a static variable in the inlined
rcu_dereference_check() and rcu_dereference_protected() macros so that
a given instance splats only once, but so that multiple instances can
be detected per boot.

This is controlled by a new config variable CONFIG_PROVE_RCU_REPEATEDLY,
which is disabled by default. This provides the normal lockdep behavior
by default, but permits people who want to find multiple RCU-lockdep
splats per boot to easily do so.

Paul E. McKenney ee84b8243b rcu: create rcu_my_thread_group_empty() wrapper
Some RCU-lockdep splat repairs need to know whether they are running
in a single-threaded process.  Unfortunately, the thread_group_empty()
primitive is defined in sched.h, and can induce #include hell. This
commit therefore introduces a rcu_my_thread_group_empty() wrapper that
is defined in rcupdate.c, thus avoiding the need to include sched.h

Paul E. McKenney bc293d62b2 rcu: Make RCU lockdep check the lockdep_recursion variable
The lockdep facility temporarily disables lockdep checking by
incrementing the current->lockdep_recursion variable.  Such
disabling happens in NMIs and in other situations where lockdep
might expect to recurse on itself.

This patch therefore checks current->lockdep_recursion, disabling RCU
lockdep splats when this variable is non-zero. In addition, this patch
removes the "likely()", as suggested by Lai Jiangshan.

Paul E. McKenney b62730baea rcu: Add rcu_access_pointer and rcu_dereference_protected
This patch adds variants of rcu_dereference() that handle
situations where the RCU-protected data structure cannot change,
perhaps due to our holding the update-side lock, or where the
RCU-protected pointer is only to be fetched, not dereferenced.
These are needed due to some performance concerns with using
rcu_dereference() where it is not required, aside from the need
for lockdep/sparse checking.

The new rcu_access_pointer() primitive is for the case where the
pointer is be fetch and not dereferenced. This primitive may be
used without protection, RCU or otherwise, due to the fact that
it uses ACCESS_ONCE().

The new rcu_dereference_protected() primitive is for the case
where updates are prevented, for example, due to holding the
update-side lock. This primitive does neither ACCESS_ONCE() nor
smp_read_barrier_depends(), so can only be used when updates are
somehow prevented.

Paul E. McKenney 632ee20013 rcu: Introduce lockdep-based checking to RCU read-side primitives
Inspection is proving insufficient to catch all RCU misuses,
which is understandable given that rcu_dereference() might be
protected by any of four different flavors of RCU (RCU, RCU-bh,
RCU-sched, and SRCU), and might also/instead be protected by any
of a number of locking primitives. It is therefore time to
enlist the aid of lockdep.

This set of patches is inspired by earlier work by Peter
Zijlstra and Thomas Gleixner, and takes the following approach:

o	Set up separate lockdep classes for RCU, RCU-bh, and RCU-sched.

o	Set up separate lockdep classes for each instance of SRCU.

o	Create primitives that check for being in an RCU read-side
	critical section. These return exact answers if lockdep is
	fully enabled, but if unsure, report being in an RCU read-side
	critical section. (We want to avoid false positives!)
	The primitives are:

	For RCU: rcu_read_lock_held(void)

	For RCU-bh: rcu_read_lock_bh_held(void)

	For RCU-sched: rcu_read_lock_sched_held(void)

	For SRCU: srcu_read_lock_held(struct srcu_struct *sp)

o	Add rcu_dereference_check(), which takes a second argument
	in which one places a boolean expression based on the above
	primitives and/or lockdep_is_held().

o	A new kernel configuration parameter, CONFIG_PROVE_RCU, enables
	rcu_dereference_check().  This depends on CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING,
	and should be quite helpful during the transition period while
	CONFIG_PROVE_RCU-unaware patches are in flight.

The existing rcu_dereference() primitive does no checking, but
upcoming patches will change that.
