This patch adds a mount option, nobarrier, in f2fs.
The assumption in here is that file system keeps the IO ordering, but
doesn't care about cache flushes inside the storages.

The current "wait_on_bit" interface requires an 'action'
function to be provided which does the actual waiting.
There are over 20 such functions, many of them identical.
Most cases can be satisfied by one of just two functions, one
which uses io_schedule() and one which just uses schedule().
So:
Rename wait_on_bit and wait_on_bit_lock to
wait_on_bit_action and wait_on_bit_lock_action
to make it explicit that they need an action function.
Introduce new wait_on_bit{,_lock} and wait_on_bit{,_lock}_io
which are *not* given an action function but implicitly use
a standard one.
The decision to error-out if a signal is pending is now made
based on the 'mode' argument rather than being encoded in the action
function.
All instances of the old wait_on_bit and wait_on_bit_lock which
can use the new version have been changed accordingly and their
action functions have been discarded.
wait_on_bit{_lock} does not return any specific error code in the
event of a signal so the caller must check for non-zero and
interpolate their own error code as appropriate.
The wait_on_bit() call in __fscache_wait_on_invalidate() was
ambiguous as it specified TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE but used
fscache_wait_bit_interruptible as an action function.
David Howells confirms this should be uniformly
"uninterruptible"
The main remaining user of wait_on_bit{,_lock}_action is NFS
which needs to use a freezer-aware schedule() call.
A comment in fs/gfs2/glock.c notes that having multiple 'action'
functions is useful as they display differently in the 'wchan'
field of 'ps'. (and /proc/$PID/wchan).
As the new bit_wait{,_io} functions are tagged "__sched", they
will not show up at all, but something higher in the stack. So
the distinction will still be visible, only with different
function names (gds2_glock_wait versus gfs2_glock_dq_wait in the
gfs2/glock.c case).
Since first version of this patch (against 3.15) two new action
functions appeared, on in NFS and one in CIFS. CIFS also now
uses an action function that makes the same freezer aware
schedule call as NFS.

Add structure for parsed BPB information, struct fat_bios_param_block,
and move all of the deserialization and validation logic from
fat_fill_super() into fat_read_bpb().
Add a 'dos1xfloppy' mount option to infer DOS 2.x BIOS Parameter Block
defaults from block device geometry for ancient floppies and floppy
images, as a fall-back from the default BPB parsing logic.
When fat_read_bpb() finds an invalid FAT filesystem and dos1xfloppy is
set, fall back to fat_read_static_bpb(). fat_read_static_bpb()
validates that the entire BPB is zero, and that the floppy has a
DOS-style 8086 code bootstrapping header. Then it fills in default BPB
values from media size and a table.[0]
Media size is assumed to be static for archaic FAT volumes. See also:

Beginning to introduce those. Just the callers for now, and it's
clumsier than it'll eventually become; once we finish converting
aio_read and aio_write instances, the things will get nicer.
For now, these guys are in parallel to ->aio_read() and ->aio_write();
they take iocb and iov_iter, with everything in iov_iter already
validated. File offset is passed in iocb->ki_pos, iov/nr_segs -
in iov_iter.
Main concerns in that series are stack footprint and ability to
split the damn thing cleanly.

Here's new version of faultaround patchset. It took a while to tune it
and collect performance data.
First patch adds new callback ->map_pages to vm_operations_struct.
->map_pages() is called when VM asks to map easy accessible pages.
Filesystem should find and map pages associated with offsets from
"pgoff" till "max_pgoff". ->map_pages() is called with page table
locked and must not block. If it's not possible to reach a page without
blocking, filesystem should skip it. Filesystem should use do_set_pte()
to setup page table entry. Pointer to entry associated with offset
"pgoff" is passed in "pte" field in vm_fault structure. Pointers to
entries for other offsets should be calculated relative to "pte".
Currently VM use ->map_pages only on read page fault path. We try to
map FAULT_AROUND_PAGES a time. FAULT_AROUND_PAGES is 16 for now.
Performance data for different FAULT_AROUND_ORDER is below.
TODO:
- implement ->map_pages() for shmem/tmpfs;
- modify get_user_pages() to be able to use ->map_pages() and implement
mmap(MAP_POPULATE|MAP_NONBLOCK) on top.

This patch (of 2):
Introduce new vm_ops callback ->map_pages() and uses it for mapping easy
accessible pages around fault address.
On read page fault, if filesystem provides ->map_pages(), we try to map up
to FAULT_AROUND_PAGES pages around page fault address in hope to reduce
number of minor page faults.
We call ->map_pages first and use ->fault() as fallback if page by the
offset is not ready to be mapped (cold page cache or something).

Some storage devices show relatively high latencies to complete cache_flush
commands, even though their normal IO speed is prettry much high. In such
the case, it needs to merge cache_flush commands as much as possible to avoid
issuing them redundantly.
So, this patch introduces a mount option, "-o flush_merge", to mitigate such
the overhead.
If this option is enabled by user, F2FS merges the cache_flush commands and then
issues just one cache_flush on behalf of them. Once the single command is
finished, F2FS sends a completion signal to all the pending threads.
Note that, this option can be used under a workload consisting of very intensive
concurrent fsync calls, while the storage handles cache_flush commands slowly.

Pull renameat2 system call from Miklos Szeredi:
"This adds a new syscall, renameat2(), which is the same as renameat()
but with a flags argument.
The purpose of extending rename is to add cross-rename, a symmetric
variant of rename, which exchanges the two files. This allows
interesting things, which were not possible before, for example
atomically replacing a directory tree with a symlink, etc... This
also allows overlayfs and friends to operate on whiteouts atomically.
Andy Lutomirski also suggested a "noreplace" flag, which disables the
overwriting behavior of rename.
These two flags, RENAME_EXCHANGE and RENAME_NOREPLACE are only
implemented for ext4 as an example and for testing"

With this ioctl the segment usage entries in the SUFILE can be updated
from userspace.
This is useful, because it allows the userspace GC to modify and update
segment usage entries for specific segments, which enables it to avoid
unnecessary write operations.
If a segment needs to be cleaned, but there is no or very little
reclaimable space in it, the cleaning operation basically degrades to a
useless moving operation. In the end the only thing that changes is the
location of the data and a timestamp in the segment usage information.
With this ioctl the GC can skip the cleaning and update the segment
usage entries directly instead.
This is basically a shortcut to cleaning the segment. It is still
necessary to read the segment summary information, but the writing of
the live blocks can be skipped if it's not worth it.

Reclaim will be leaving shadow entries in the page cache radix tree upon
evicting the real page. As those pages are found from the LRU, an
iput() can lead to the inode being freed concurrently. At this point,
reclaim must no longer install shadow pages because the inode freeing
code needs to ensure the page tree is really empty.
Add an address_space flag, AS_EXITING, that the inode freeing code sets
under the tree lock before doing the final truncate. Reclaim will check
for this flag before installing shadow pages.

It is more reasonable to determine the reclaiming rate of prefree segments
according to the volume size, which is set to 5% by default.
For example, if the volume is 128GB, the prefree segments are reclaimed
when the number reaches to 6.4GB.

This patch introduces ram_thresh, a sysfs entry, which controls the memory
footprint used by the free nid list and the nat cache.
Previously, the free nid list was controlled by MAX_FREE_NIDS, while the nat
cache was managed by NM_WOUT_THRESHOLD.
However, this approach cannot be applied dynamically according to the system.
So, this patch adds ram_thresh that users can specify the threshold, which is
in order of 1 / 1024.
For example, if the total ram size is 4GB and the value is set to 10 by default,
f2fs tries to control the number of free nids and nat caches not to consume over
10 * (4GB / 1024) = 10MB.

This patch adds an sysfs entry to control dir_level used by the large directory.
The description of this entry is:
dir_level This parameter controls the directory level to
support large directory. If a directory has a
number of files, it can reduce the file lookup
latency by increasing this dir_level value.
Otherwise, it needs to decrease this value to
reduce the space overhead. The default value is 0.

This patch introduces an i_dir_level field to support large directory.
Previously, f2fs maintains multi-level hash tables to find a dentry quickly
from a bunch of chiild dentries in a directory, and the hash tables consist of
the following tree structure as below.
In Documentation/filesystems/f2fs.txt,
----------------------
A : bucket
B : block
N : MAX_DIR_HASH_DEPTH
----------------------
level #0 | A(2B)
|
level #1 | A(2B) - A(2B)
|
level #2 | A(2B) - A(2B) - A(2B) - A(2B)
. | . . . .
level #N/2 | A(2B) - A(2B) - A(2B) - A(2B) - A(2B) - ... - A(2B)
. | . . . .
level #N | A(4B) - A(4B) - A(4B) - A(4B) - A(4B) - ... - A(4B)
But, if we can guess that a directory will handle a number of child files,
we don't need to traverse the tree from level #0 to #N all the time.
Since the lower level tables contain relatively small number of dentries,
the miss ratio of the target dentry is likely to be high.
In order to avoid that, we can configure the hash tables sparsely from level #0
like this.
level #0 | A(2B) - A(2B) - A(2B) - A(2B)
level #1 | A(2B) - A(2B) - A(2B) - A(2B) - A(2B) - ... - A(2B)
. | . . . .
level #N/2 | A(2B) - A(2B) - A(2B) - A(2B) - A(2B) - ... - A(2B)
. | . . . .
level #N | A(4B) - A(4B) - A(4B) - A(4B) - A(4B) - ... - A(4B)
With this structure, we can skip the ineffective tree searches in lower level
hash tables.
This patch adds just a facility for this by introducing i_dir_level in
f2fs_inode.

A 3% of system memory bonus is sometimes too excessive in comparison to
other processes.
With commit a63d83f427 ("oom: badness heuristic rewrite"), the OOM
killer tries to avoid killing privileged tasks by subtracting 3% of
overall memory (system or cgroup) from their per-task consumption. But
as a result, all root tasks that consume less than 3% of overall memory
are considered equal, and so it only takes 33+ privileged tasks pushing
the system out of memory for the OOM killer to do something stupid and
kill dhclient or other root-owned processes. For example, on a 32G
machine it can't tell the difference between the 1M agetty and the 10G
fork bomb member.
The changelog describes this 3% boost as the equivalent to the global
overcommit limit being 3% higher for privileged tasks, but this is not
the same as discounting 3% of overall memory from _every privileged task
individually_ during OOM selection.
Replace the 3% of system memory bonus with a 3% of current memory usage
bonus.
By giving root tasks a bonus that is proportional to their actual size,
they remain comparable even when relatively small. In the example
above, the OOM killer will discount the 1M agetty's 256 badness points
down to 179, and the 10G fork bomb's 262144 points down to 183500 points
and make the right choice, instead of discounting both to 0 and killing
agetty because it's first in the task list.

Many load balancing and workload placing programs check /proc/meminfo to
estimate how much free memory is available. They generally do this by
adding up "free" and "cached", which was fine ten years ago, but is
pretty much guaranteed to be wrong today.
It is wrong because Cached includes memory that is not freeable as page
cache, for example shared memory segments, tmpfs, and ramfs, and it does
not include reclaimable slab memory, which can take up a large fraction
of system memory on mostly idle systems with lots of files.
Currently, the amount of memory that is available for a new workload,
without pushing the system into swap, can be estimated from MemFree,
Active(file), Inactive(file), and SReclaimable, as well as the "low"
watermarks from /proc/zoneinfo.
However, this may change in the future, and user space really should not
be expected to know kernel internals to come up with an estimate for the
amount of free memory.
It is more convenient to provide such an estimate in /proc/meminfo. If
things change in the future, we only have to change it in one place.

This patch introduces new sysfs entries for users to control the policy of
in-place-updates, namely IPU, in f2fs.
Sometimes f2fs suffers from performance degradation due to its out-of-place
update policy that produces many additional node block writes.
If the storage performance is very dependant on the amount of data writes
instead of IO patterns, we'd better drop this out-of-place update policy.
This patch suggests 5 polcies and their triggering conditions as follows.
[sysfs entry name = ipu_policy]

A read delegation is used by NFSv4 as a guarantee that a client can
perform local read opens without informing the server.
The open operation takes the last component of the pathname as an
argument, thus is also a lookup operation, and giving the client the
above guarantee means informing the client before we allow anything that
would change the set of names pointing to the inode.
Therefore, we need to break delegations on rename, link, and unlink.
We also need to prevent new delegations from being acquired while one of
these operations is in progress.
We could add some completely new locking for that purpose, but it's
simpler to use the i_mutex, since that's already taken by all the
operations we care about.
The single exception is rename. So, modify rename to take the i_mutex
on the file that is being renamed.
Also fix up lockdep and Documentation/filesystems/directory-locking to
reflect the change.

Provide the ability to enable and disable fscache cookies. A disabled cookie
will reject or ignore further requests to:
Acquire a child cookie
Invalidate and update backing objects
Check the consistency of a backing object
Allocate storage for backing page
Read backing pages
Write to backing pages
but still allows:
Checks/waits on the completion of already in-progress objects
Uncaching of pages
Relinquishment of cookies
Two new operations are provided:
(1) Disable a cookie:
void fscache_disable_cookie(struct fscache_cookie *cookie,
bool invalidate);
If the cookie is not already disabled, this locks the cookie against other
dis/enablement ops, marks the cookie as being disabled, discards or
invalidates any backing objects and waits for cessation of activity on any
associated object.
This is a wrapper around a chunk split out of fscache_relinquish_cookie(),
but it reinitialises the cookie such that it can be reenabled.
All possible failures are handled internally. The caller should consider
calling fscache_uncache_all_inode_pages() afterwards to make sure all page
markings are cleared up.
(2) Enable a cookie:
void fscache_enable_cookie(struct fscache_cookie *cookie,
bool (*can_enable)(void *data),
void *data)
If the cookie is not already enabled, this locks the cookie against other
dis/enablement ops, invokes can_enable() and, if the cookie is not an
index cookie, will begin the procedure of acquiring backing objects.
The optional can_enable() function is passed the data argument and returns
a ruling as to whether or not enablement should actually be permitted to
begin.
All possible failures are handled internally. The cookie will only be
marked as enabled if provisional backing objects are allocated.
A later patch will introduce these to NFS. Cookie enablement during nfs_open()
is then contingent on i_writecount <= 0. can_enable() checks for a race
between open(O_RDONLY) and open(O_WRONLY/O_RDWR). This simplifies NFS's cookie
handling and allows us to get rid of open(O_RDONLY) accidentally introducing
caching to an inode that's open for writing already.
One operation has its API modified:
(3) Acquire a cookie.
struct fscache_cookie *fscache_acquire_cookie(
struct fscache_cookie *parent,
const struct fscache_cookie_def *def,
void *netfs_data,
bool enable);
This now has an additional argument that indicates whether the requested
cookie should be enabled by default. It doesn't need the can_enable()
function because the caller must prevent multiple calls for the same netfs
object and it doesn't need to take the enablement lock because no one else
can get at the cookie before this returns.

Currently the fscache code expect the netfs to call fscache_readpages_or_alloc
inside the aops readpages callback. It marks all the pages in the list
provided by readahead with PG_private_2. In the cases that the netfs fails to
read all the pages (which is legal) it ends up returning to the readahead and
triggering a BUG. This happens because the page list still contains marked
pages.
This patch implements a simple fscache_readpages_cancel function that the netfs
should call before returning from readpages. It will revoke the pages from the
underlying cache backend and unmark them.
The problem was originally worked out in the Ceph devel tree, but it also
occurs in CIFS. It appears that NFS, AFS and 9P are okay as read_cache_pages()
will clean up the unprocessed pages in the case of an error.
This can be used to address the following oops:

Extend the fscache netfs API so that the netfs can ask as to whether a cache
object is up to date with respect to its corresponding netfs object:
int fscache_check_consistency(struct fscache_cookie *cookie)
This will call back to the netfs to check whether the auxiliary data associated
with a cookie is correct. It returns 0 if it is and -ESTALE if it isn't; it
may also return -ENOMEM and -ERESTARTSYS.
The backends now have to implement a mandatory operation pointer:
int (*check_consistency)(struct fscache_object *object)
that corresponds to the above API call. FS-Cache takes care of pinning the
object and the cookie in memory and managing this call with respect to the
object state.

It's always been a hassle that if an external journal's
device number changes, the filesystem won't mount.
And since boot-time enumeration can change, device number
changes aren't unusual.
The current mechanism to update the journal location is by
passing in a mount option w/ a new devnum, but that's a hassle;
it's a manual approach, fixing things after the fact.
Adding a mount option, "-o journal_path=/dev/$DEVICE" would
help, since then we can do i.e.
# mount -o journal_path=/dev/disk/by-label/$JOURNAL_LABEL ...
and it'll mount even if the devnum has changed, as shown here:
# losetup /dev/loop0 journalfile
# mke2fs -L mylabel-journal -O journal_dev /dev/loop0
# mkfs.ext4 -L mylabel -J device=/dev/loop0 /dev/sdb1
Change the journal device number:
# losetup -d /dev/loop0
# losetup /dev/loop1 journalfile
And today it will fail:
# mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/test
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
# dmesg | tail -n 1
[17343.240702] EXT4-fs (sdb1): error: couldn't read superblock of external journal
But with this new mount option, we can specify the new path:
# mount -o journal_path=/dev/loop1 /dev/sdb1 /mnt/test
#
(which does update the encoded device number, incidentally):
# umount /dev/sdb1
# dumpe2fs -h /dev/sdb1 | grep "Journal device"
dumpe2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
Journal device: 0x0701
But best of all we can just always mount by journal-path, and
it'll always work:
# mount -o journal_path=/dev/disk/by-label/mylabel-journal /dev/sdb1 /mnt/test
#
So the journal_path option can be specified in fstab, and as long as
the disk is available somewhere, and findable by label (or by UUID),
we can mount.

The soft-dirty is a bit on a PTE which helps to track which pages a task
writes to. In order to do this tracking one should
1. Clear soft-dirty bits from PTEs ("echo 4 > /proc/PID/clear_refs)
2. Wait some time.
3. Read soft-dirty bits (55'th in /proc/PID/pagemap2 entries)
To do this tracking, the writable bit is cleared from PTEs when the
soft-dirty bit is. Thus, after this, when the task tries to modify a
page at some virtual address the #PF occurs and the kernel sets the
soft-dirty bit on the respective PTE.
Note, that although all the task's address space is marked as r/o after
the soft-dirty bits clear, the #PF-s that occur after that are processed
fast. This is so, since the pages are still mapped to physical memory,
and thus all the kernel does is finds this fact out and puts back
writable, dirty and soft-dirty bits on the PTE.
Another thing to note, is that when mremap moves PTEs they are marked
with soft-dirty as well, since from the user perspective mremap modifies
the virtual memory at mremap's new address.

category, of note is a fix for on-line resizing file systems where the
block size is smaller than the page size (i.e., file systems 1k blocks
on x86, or more interestingly file systems with 4k blocks on Power or

In the cleanup category, the ext4's punch hole implementation was
significantly improved by Lukas Czerner, and now supports bigalloc
file systems. In addition, Jan Kara significantly cleaned up the
write submission code path. We also improved error checking and added
a few sanity checks.
In the optimizations category, two major optimizations deserve
mention. The first is that ext4_writepages() is now used for
nodelalloc and ext3 compatibility mode. This allows writes to be
submitted much more efficiently as a single bio request, instead of
being sent as individual 4k writes into the block layer (which then
relied on the elevator code to coalesce the requests in the block
queue). Secondly, the extent cache shrink mechanism, which was
introduce in 3.9, no longer has a scalability bottleneck caused by the
i_es_lru spinlock. Other optimizations include some changes to reduce
CPU usage and to avoid issuing empty commits unnecessarily.

"Lots of bug fixes, cleanups and optimizations. In the bug fixes
category, of note is a fix for on-line resizing file systems where the
block size is smaller than the page size (i.e., file systems 1k blocks
on x86, or more interestingly file systems with 4k blocks on Power or
ia64 systems.)
CPU usage and to avoid issuing empty commits unnecessarily."

There's no reason we have to protect the blocked_hash and file_lock_list
with the same spinlock. With the tests I have, breaking it in two gives
a barely measurable performance benefit, but it seems reasonable to make
this locking as granular as possible.

Currently, the hashing that the locking code uses to add these values
to the blocked_hash is simply calculated using fl_owner field. That's
valid in most cases except for server-side lockd, which validates the
owner of a lock based on fl_owner and fl_pid.
In the case where you have a small number of NFS clients doing a lot
of locking between different processes, you could end up with all
the blocked requests sitting in a very small number of hash buckets.
Add a new lm_owner_key operation to the lock_manager_operations that
will generate an unsigned long to use as the key in the hashtable.
That function is only implemented for server-side lockd, and simply
XORs the fl_owner and fl_pid.

Having a global lock that protects all of this code is a clear
scalability problem. Instead of doing that, move most of the code to be
protected by the i_lock instead. The exceptions are the global lists
that the ->fl_link sits on, and the ->fl_block list.
->fl_link is what connects these structures to the
global lists, so we must ensure that we hold those locks when iterating
over or updating these lists.
Furthermore, sound deadlock detection requires that we hold the
blocked_list state steady while checking for loops. We also must ensure
that the search and update to the list are atomic.
For the checking and insertion side of the blocked_list, push the
acquisition of the global lock into __posix_lock_file and ensure that
checking and update of the blocked_list is done without dropping the
lock in between.
On the removal side, when waking up blocked lock waiters, take the
global lock before walking the blocked list and dequeue the waiters from
the global list prior to removal from the fl_block list.
With this, deadlock detection should be race free while we minimize
excessive file_lock_lock thrashing.
Finally, in order to avoid a lock inversion problem when handling
/proc/locks output we must ensure that manipulations of the fl_block
list are also protected by the file_lock_lock.

Instances either don't look at it at all (the majority of cases) or
only want it to find the superblock (which can be had as dentry->d_sb).
A few cases that want more are actually safe with dentry->d_inode -
the only precaution needed is the check that it hadn't been replaced with
NULL by rmdir() or by overwriting rename(), which case should be simply
treated as cache miss.

Add the f2fs_remount function call which will be used
during the filesystem remounting. This function
will help us to change the mount options specific to
f2fs.
Also modify the f2fs background_gc mount option, which
will allow the user to dynamically trun on/off the
garbage collection in f2fs based on the background_gc
value. If background_gc=on, Garbage collection will
be turned off & if background_gc=off, Garbage collection
will be truned on.
By default the garbage collection is on in f2fs.
Change Log:
v2: Incorporated the review comments by Gu Zheng.
Removing the restore part for VFS flags
Updating comments with proper flag conditions
Display GC background option as ON/OFF
Revised conditions to stop GC in case of remount

Currently there is no way to truncate partial page where the end
truncate point is not at the end of the page. This is because it was not
needed and the functionality was enough for file system truncate
operation to work properly. However more file systems now support punch
hole feature and it can benefit from mm supporting truncating page just
up to the certain point.
Specifically, with this functionality truncate_inode_pages_range() can
be changed so it supports truncating partial page at the end of the
range (currently it will BUG_ON() if 'end' is not at the end of the
page).
This commit changes the invalidatepage() address space operation
prototype to accept range to be invalidated and update all the instances
for it.
We also change the block_invalidatepage() in the same way and actually
make a use of the new length argument implementing range invalidation.
Actual file system implementations will follow except the file systems
where the changes are really simple and should not change the behaviour
in any way .Implementation for truncate_page_range() which will be able
to accept page unaligned ranges will follow as well.

"These are mostly fixes. The biggest exceptions are Josef's skinny
extents and Jan Schmidt's code to rebuild our quota indexes if they
get out of sync (or you enable quotas on an existing filesystem).
The skinny extents are off by default because they are a new variation
on the extent allocation tree format. btrfstune -x enables them, and
the new format makes the extent allocation tree about 30% smaller.
I rebased this a few days ago to rework Dave Sterba's crc checks on
the super block, but almost all of these go back to rc6, since I
though 3.9 was due any minute.
The biggest missing fix is the tracepoint bug that was hit late in
3.9. I ran into problems with that in overnight testing and I'm still
tracking it down. I'll definitely have that fixed for rc2."

Data being discussed in IETF on the krbwg working group.
The Gssproxy program is used to perform the accept_sec_context call on the
kernel's behalf. The code is changed to also pass the input buffer straight
to upcall mechanism to avoid allocating and copying many pages as tokens can
be as big (potentially more in future) as 64KiB.

Currently in ENOSPC condition when writing into unwritten space, or
punching a hole, we might need to split the extent and grow extent tree.
However since we can not allocate any new metadata blocks we'll have to
zero out unwritten part of extent or punched out part of extent, or in
the worst case return ENOSPC even though use actually does not allocate
any space.
Also in delalloc path we do reserve metadata and data blocks for the
time we're going to write out, however metadata block reservation is
very tricky especially since we expect that logical connectivity implies
physical connectivity, however that might not be the case and hence we
might end up allocating more metadata blocks than previously reserved.
So in future, metadata reservation checks should be removed since we can
not assure that we do not under reserve.
And this is where reserved space comes into the picture. When mounting
the file system we slice off a little bit of the file system space (2%
or 4096 clusters, whichever is smaller) which can be then used for the
cases mentioned above to prevent costly zeroout, or unexpected ENOSPC.
The number of reserved clusters can be set via sysfs, however it can
never be bigger than number of free clusters in the file system.
Note that this patch fixes the failure of xfstest 274 as expected.

Add a new ioctl, EXT4_IOC_SWAP_BOOT which swaps i_blocks and
associated attributes (like i_blocks, i_size, i_flags, ...) from the
specified inode with inode EXT4_BOOT_LOADER_INO (#5). This is
typically used to store a boot loader in a secure part of the
filesystem, where it can't be changed by a normal user by accident.
The data blocks of the previous boot loader will be associated with
the given inode.
This usercode program is a simple example of the usage:
int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
int fd;
int err;
if ( argc != 2 ) {
printf("usage: ext4-swap-boot-inode FILE-TO-SWAP\n");
exit(1);
}
fd = open(argv[1], O_WRONLY);
if ( fd < 0 ) {
perror("open");
exit(1);
}
err = ioctl(fd, EXT4_IOC_SWAP_BOOT);
if ( err < 0 ) {
perror("ioctl");
exit(1);
}
close(fd);

server# mkdir a
client# cd a
server# mv a a.bak
client# sleep 30 # (or whatever the dir attrcache timeout is)
client# stat .
stat: cannot stat `.': Stale NFS file handle
Obviously, we should not be getting an ESTALE error back there since the
inode still exists on the server. The problem is that the lookup code
will call d_revalidate on the dentry that "." refers to, because NFS has
FS_REVAL_DOT set.
nfs_lookup_revalidate will see that the parent directory has changed and
will try to reverify the dentry by redoing a LOOKUP. That of course
fails, so the lookup code returns ESTALE.
The problem here is that d_revalidate is really a bad fit for this case.
What we really want to know at this point is whether the inode is still
good or not, but we don't really care what name it goes by or whether
the dcache is still valid.
Add a new d_op->d_weak_revalidate operation and have complete_walk call
that instead of d_revalidate. The intent there is to allow for a
"weaker" d_revalidate that just checks to see whether the inode is still
good. This is also gives us an opportunity to kill off the FS_REVAL_DOT
special casing.

Provide a proper invalidation method rather than relying on the netfs retiring
the cookie it has and getting a new one. The problem with this is that isn't
easy for the netfs to make sure that it has completed/cancelled all its
outstanding storage and retrieval operations on the cookie it is retiring.
Instead, have the cache provide an invalidation method that will cancel or wait
for all currently outstanding operations before invalidating the cache, and
will cause new operations to queue up behind that. Whilst invalidation is in
progress, some requests will be rejected until the cache can stack a barrier on
the operation queue to cause new operations to be deferred behind it.

Fix the state management of internal fscache operations and the accounting of
what operations are in what states.
This is done by:
(1) Give struct fscache_operation a enum variable that directly represents the
state it's currently in, rather than spreading this knowledge over a bunch
of flags, who's processing the operation at the moment and whether it is
queued or not.
This makes it easier to write assertions to check the state at various
points and to prevent invalid state transitions.
(2) Add an 'operation complete' state and supply a function to indicate the
completion of an operation (fscache_op_complete()) and make things call
it. The final call to fscache_put_operation() can then check that an op
in the appropriate state (complete or cancelled).
(3) Adjust the use of object->n_ops, ->n_in_progress, ->n_exclusive to better
govern the state of an object:
(a) The ->n_ops is now the number of extant operations on the object
and is now decremented by fscache_put_operation() only.
(b) The ->n_in_progress is simply the number of objects that have been
taken off of the object's pending queue for the purposes of being
run. This is decremented by fscache_op_complete() only.
(c) The ->n_exclusive is the number of exclusive ops that have been
submitted and queued or are in progress. It is decremented by
fscache_op_complete() and by fscache_cancel_op().
fscache_put_operation() and fscache_operation_gc() now no longer try to
clean up ->n_exclusive and ->n_in_progress. That was leading to double
decrements against fscache_cancel_op().
fscache_cancel_op() now no longer decrements ->n_ops. That was leading to
double decrements against fscache_put_operation().
fscache_submit_exclusive_op() now decides whether it has to queue an op
based on ->n_in_progress being > 0 rather than ->n_ops > 0 as the latter
will persist in being true even after all preceding operations have been
cancelled or completed. Furthermore, if an object is active and there are
runnable ops against it, there must be at least one op running.
(4) Add a remaining-pages counter (n_pages) to struct fscache_retrieval and
provide a function to record completion of the pages as they complete.
When n_pages reaches 0, the operation is deemed to be complete and
fscache_op_complete() is called.
Add calls to fscache_retrieval_complete() anywhere we've finished with a
page we've been given to read or allocate for. This includes places where
we just return pages to the netfs for reading from the server and where
accessing the cache fails and we discard the proposed netfs page.
The bugs in the unfixed state management manifest themselves as oopses like the
following where the operation completion gets out of sync with return of the
cookie by the netfs. This is possible because the cache unlocks and returns
all the netfs pages before recording its completion - which means that there's
nothing to stop the netfs discarding them and returning the cookie.

Linux 3.8.
Highlights:
- Add initial f2fs source codes
- Fix an endian conversion bug
- Fix build failures on random configs
- Fix the power-off-recovery routine
- Minor cleanup, coding style, and typos patches"
From the Kconfig help text:
F2FS is based on Log-structured File System (LFS), which supports
versatile "flash-friendly" features. The design has been focused on
addressing the fundamental issues in LFS, which are snowball effect
of wandering tree and high cleaning overhead.
Since flash-based storages show different characteristics according to
the internal geometry or flash memory management schemes aka FTL, F2FS
and tools support various parameters not only for configuring on-disk
layout, but also for selecting allocation and cleaning algorithms.
