e1000: remove unused and incorrect code
The e1000_clear_vfta function was triggering a warning in kbuild-bot testing. It's actually a bug but has no functional impact. drivers/net/ethernet/intel/e1000/e1000_hw.c:4415:58: warning: Same expression in both branches of ternary operator. [duplicateExpressionTernary] Fix this warning by removing the offending code and simplifying the routine to do exactly what it did before, no functional change. net: intel: Remove in_interrupt() warnings
in_interrupt() is ill defined and does not provide what the name suggests. The usage especially in driver code is deprecated and a tree wide effort to clean up and consolidate the (ab)usage of in_interrupt() and related checks is happening. In this case the checks cover only parts of the contexts in which these functions cannot be called. They fail to detect preemption or interrupt disabled invocations. As the functions which are invoked from the various places contain already a broad variety of checks (always enabled or debug option dependent) cover all invalid conditions already, there is no point in having inconsistent warnings in those drivers. Just remove them. intel: handle unused assignments
Remove variables that were storing a return value from a register read or other read, where the return value wasn't used. Those conversions to remove the lvalue of the assignment should be safe because the readl memory mapped reads are marked volatile and should not be optimized out without an lvalue (I suspect a very long time ago this wasn't guaranteed as it is today). These changes are part of a separate patch to make it easier to review. intel-ethernet: clean up W=1 warnings in kdoc
This takes care of all of the trivial W=1 fixes in the Intel Ethernet drivers, which allows developers and maintainers to build more of the networking tree with more complete warning checks. There are three classes of kdoc warnings fixed: - cannot understand function prototype: 'x' - Excess function parameter 'x' description in 'y' - Function parameter or member 'x' not described in 'y' All of the changes were trivial comment updates on function headers. Inspired by Lee Jones' series of wireless work to do the same. net/intel: remove driver versions from Intel drivers
As with other networking drivers, remove the unnecessary driver version from the Intel drivers. The ethtool driver information and module version will then report the kernel version instead. For ixgbe, i40e and ice drivers, the driver passes the driver version to the firmware to confirm that we are up and running. So we now pass the value of UTS_RELEASE to the firmware. This adminq call is required per the HAS document. The Device then sends an indication to the BMC that the PF driver is present. This is done using Host NC Driver Status Indication in NC-SI Get Link command or via the Host Network Controller Driver Status Change AEN. What the BMC may do with this information is implementation-dependent, but this is a standard NC-SI 1.1 command we honor per the HAS. e1000: use generic power management
With legacy PM hooks, it was the responsibility of a driver to manage PCI states and also the device's power state. The generic approach is to let PCI core handle the work. e1000_suspend() calls __e1000_shutdown() to perform intermediate tasks. __e1000_shutdown() modifies the value of "wake" (device should be wakeup enabled or not), responsible for controlling the flow of legacy PM. Since, PCI core has no idea about the value of "wake", new code for generic PM may produce unexpected results. Thus, use "device_set_wakeup_enable()" to wakeup-enable the device accordingly. e1000: Do not perform reset in reset_task if we are already down
We are seeing a deadlock in e1000 down when NAPI is being disabled. Looking over the kernel function trace of the system it appears that the interface is being closed and then a reset is hitting which deadlocks the interface as the NAPI interface is already disabled. To prevent this from happening I am disabling the reset task when __E1000_DOWN is already set. In addition code has been added so that we set the __E1000_DOWN while holding the __E1000_RESET flag in e1000_close in order to guarantee that the reset task will not run after we have started the close call. e1000: Distribute switch variables for initialization
Variables declared in a switch statement before any case statements cannot be automatically initialized with compiler instrumentation (as they are not part of any execution flow). With GCC's proposed automatic stack variable initialization feature, this triggers a warning (and they don't get initialized). Clang's automatic stack variable initialization (via CONFIG_INIT_STACK_ALL=y) doesn't throw a warning, but it also doesn't initialize such variables[1]. Note that these warnings (or silent skipping) happen before the dead-store elimination optimization phase, so even when the automatic initializations are later elided in favor of direct initializations, the warnings remain. To avoid these problems, move such variables into the "case" where they're used or lift them up into the main function body. drivers/net/ethernet/intel/e1000/e1000_main.c: In function ‘e1000_xmit_frame’: drivers/net/ethernet/intel/e1000/e1000_main.c:3143:18: warning: statement will never be executed [-Wswitch-unreachable] 3143 | unsigned int pull_size; | ^~~~~~~~~ [1] https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44916 Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <keescook@chromium.org> Tested-by: Aaron Brown <aaron.f.brown@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Jeff Kirsher <jeffrey.t.kirsher@intel.com> |

net: ethernet: intel: Demote MTU change prints to debug
Changing a network device MTU can be a fairly frequent operation, and failure to change the MTU is reflected to user-space properly, both by an appropriate message as well as by looking at whether the device's MTU matches the configuration. Demote the prints to debug prints by using netdev_dbg(), making all Intel wired LAN drivers consistent, since they used a mixture of PCI device and network device prints before. PCI: Add PCI_STD_NUM_BARS for the number of standard BARs
Code that iterates over all standard PCI BARs typically uses PCI_STD_RESOURCE_END. e1000: Use dma_wmb() instead of wmb() before doorbell writes
e1000 writes to doorbells to post transmit descriptors and fill the receive ring. After writing descriptors to memory but before writing to doorbells, use dma_wmb() rather than wmb(). wmb() is more heavyweight than necessary for a device to see descriptor writes. On x86, this avoids SFENCEs before doorbell writes in both the Tx and Rx paths. On ARM, this converts DSB ST -> DMB OSHST. drivers: Remove explicit invocations of mmiowb()
mmiowb() is now implied by spin_unlock() on architectures that require it, so there is no reason to call it from driver code. This patch was generated using coccinelle: @mmiowb@ @@ - mmiowb(); and invoked as: $ for d in drivers include/linux/qed sound; do \ spatch --include-headers --sp-file mmiowb.cocci --dir $d --in-place; done NOTE: mmiowb() has only ever guaranteed ordering in conjunction with spin_unlock(). However, pairing each mmiowb() removal in this patch with the corresponding call to spin_unlock() is not at all trivial, so there is a small chance that this change may regress any drivers incorrectly relying on mmiowb() to order MMIO writes between CPUs using lock-free synchronisation. If you've ended up bisecting to this commit, you can reintroduce the mmiowb() calls using wmb() instead, which should restore the old behaviour on all architectures other than some esoteric ia64 systems. net: move skb->xmit_more hint to softnet data
There are two reasons for this. First, the xmit_more flag conceptually doesn't fit into the skb, as xmit_more is not a property related to the skb. Its only a hint to the driver that the stack is about to transmit another packet immediately. Second, it was only done this way to not have to pass another argument to ndo_start_xmit(). We can place xmit_more in the softnet data, next to the device recursion. The recursion counter is already written to on each transmit. The "more" indicator is placed right next to it. Drivers can use the netdev_xmit_more() helper instead of skb->xmit_more to check the "more packets coming" hint. skb->xmit_more is retained (but always 0) to not cause build breakage. This change takes care of the simple s/skb->xmit_more/netdev_xmit_more()/ conversions. Remaining drivers are converted in the next patches. ethernet/intel: consolidate NAPI and NAPI exit
While reviewing code, I noticed that Eric Dumazet recommends that drivers check the return code of napi_complete_done, and use that to decide to enable interrupts or not when exiting poll. One of the Intel drivers was already fixed (ixgbe). Upon looking at the Intel drivers as a whole, we are handling our polling and NAPI exit in a few different ways based on whether we have multiqueue and whether we have Tx cleanup included. Several drivers had the bug of exiting NAPI with return 0, which appears to mess up the accounting in the stack. Consolidate all the NAPI routines to do best known way of exiting and to just mostly look like each other. 1) check return code of napi_complete_done to control interrupt enable 2) return the actual amount of work done. 3) return budget immediately if need NAPI poll again Tested the changes on e1000e with a high interrupt rate set, and it shows about an 8% reduction in the CPU utilization when busy polling because we aren't re-enabling interrupts when we're about to be polled. treewide: kmalloc() -> kmalloc_array()
The kmalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kmalloc_array(). This patch replaces cases of: kmalloc(a * b, gfp) with: kmalloc_array(a * b, gfp) as well as handling cases of: kmalloc(a * b * c, gfp) with: kmalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp) as it's slightly less ugly than: kmalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp) This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like: kmalloc(4 * 1024, gfp) though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion. Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were dropped, since they're redundant. The tools/ directory was manually excluded, since it has its own implementation of kmalloc(). The Coccinelle script used for this was: // Fix redundant parens around sizeof(). @@ type TYPE; expression THING, E; @@ ( kmalloc( - (sizeof(TYPE)) * E + sizeof(TYPE) * E , ...) | kmalloc( - (sizeof(THING)) * E + sizeof(THING) * E , ...) ) // Drop single-byte sizes and redundant parens. @@ expression COUNT; e1000: avoid null pointer dereference on invalid stat type
Currently if the stat type is invalid then data[i] is being set either by dereferencing a null pointer p, or it is reading from an incorrect previous location if we had a valid stat type previously. Fix this by skipping over the read of p on an invalid stat type. e1000: fix race condition between e1000_down() and e1000_watchdog
This patch fixes a race condition that can result into the interface being up and carrier on, but with transmits disabled in the hardware. The bug may show up by repeatedly IFF_DOWN+IFF_UP the interface, which allows e1000_watchdog() interleave with e1000_down(). networking: introduce and use skb_put_data()
A common pattern with skb_put() is to just want to memcpy() some data into the new space, introduce skb_put_data() for this. An spatch similar to the one for skb_put_zero() converts many of the places using it: @@ identifier p, p2; expression len, skb, data; type t, t2; @@ ( -p = skb_put(skb, len); +p = skb_put_data(skb, data, len); | -p = (t)skb_put(skb, len); +p = skb_put_data(skb, data, len); ) ( p2 = (t2)p; -memcpy(p2, data, len); | -memcpy(p, data, len); ) @@ type t, t2; identifier p, p2; expression skb, data; @@ t *p; ... e1000_get_stats() just returns dev->stats so we can leave it out altogether and let dev_get_stats() do the job. e1000: use new API ethtool_{get|set}_link_ksettings
The ethtool API {get|set}_settings is deprecated. We move this driver to new API {get|set}_link_ksettings. As I don't have the hardware, I'd be very pleased if someone may test this patch. ethernet/intel: use core min/max MTU checking

e1000: call ndo_stop() instead of dev_close() when running offline selftest
Calling dev_close() causes IFF_UP to be cleared which will remove the interfaces routes and some addresses. That's probably not what the user intended when running the offline selftest. Besides this does not happen if the interface is brought down before the test, so the current behaviour is inconsistent. Instead call the net_device_ops ndo_stop function directly and avoid touching IFF_UP at all.
