Move the core sysctl code from kernel/sysctl.c and kernel/sysctl_check.c
into fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c.
Currently sysctl maintenance is hampered by the sysctl implementation
being split across 3 files with artificial layering between them.
Consolidate the entire sysctl implementation into 1 file so that
it is easier to see what is going on and hopefully allowing for
simpler maintenance.
For functions that are now only used in fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c remove
their declarations from sysctl.h and make them static in fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c

After commit 1eb208aea3, "PM: Make
CONFIG_PM depend on (CONFIG_PM_SLEEP || CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME)", the
files under kernel/power are not built unless CONFIG_PM_SLEEP or
CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME is set. In particular, this causes
kernel/power/poweroff.c to be omitted, even though it should be
compiled, because CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ is set.
Fix the problem by causing kernel/power/Makefile to be processed
for CONFIG_PM unset too.

During some CPU power modes entered during idle, hotplug and
suspend, peripherals located in the CPU power domain, such as
the GIC, localtimers, and VFP, may be powered down. Add a
notifier chain that allows drivers for those peripherals to
be notified before and after they may be reset.
Notified drivers can include VFP co-processor, interrupt controller
and it's PM extensions, local CPU timers context save/restore which
shouldn't be interrupted. Hence CPU PM event APIs must be called
with interrupts disabled.

In the course of testing jump labels for use with the CFS
bandwidth controller, Paul Turner, discovered that using jump
labels reduced the branch count and the instruction count, but
did not reduce the cycle count or wall time.
I noticed that having the jump_label.o included in the kernel
but not used in any way still caused this increase in cycle
count and wall time. Thus, I moved jump_label.o in the
kernel/Makefile, thus changing the link order, and presumably
moving it out of hot icache areas. This brought down the cycle
count/time as expected.
In addition to Paul's testing, I've tested the patch using a
single 'static_branch()' in the getppid() path, and basically
running tight loops of calls to getppid(). Here are my results
for the branch disabled case:

When IKCONFIG is built-in make oldconfig will cause the kernel to be
relinked even if .config didn't change. This happens because of a
config_data.gz dependency on .config. This patch changes the if_changed
to a filechk so that config_data.h is only rebuilt when the contents
have actually changed.

The ns_cgroup is an annoying cgroup at the namespace / cgroup frontier and
leads to some problems:
* cgroup creation is out-of-control
* cgroup name can conflict when pids are looping
* it is not possible to have a single process handling a lot of
namespaces without falling in a exponential creation time
* we may want to create a namespace without creating a cgroup
The ns_cgroup was replaced by a compatibility flag 'clone_children',
where a newly created cgroup will copy the parent cgroup values.
The userspace has to manually create a cgroup and add a task to
the 'tasks' file.
This patch removes the ns_cgroup as suggested in the following thread:

The 'cgroup_clone' function is removed because it is no longer used.
This is a userspace-visible change. Commit 45531757b4 ("cgroup: notify
ns_cgroup deprecated") (merged into 2.6.27) caused the kernel to emit a
printk warning users that the feature is planned for removal. Since that
time we have heard from XXX users who were affected by this.

mv kernel/perf_event.c -> kernel/events/core.c. From there, all further
sensible splitting can happen. The idea is that due to perf_event.c
becoming pretty sizable and with the advent of the marriage with ftrace,
splitting functionality into its logical parts should help speeding up
the unification and to manage the complexity of the subsystem.

The Xen PV drivers in a crashed HVM guest can not connect to the dom0
backend drivers because both frontend and backend drivers are still in
connected state. To run the connection reset function only in case of a
crashdump, the is_kdump_kernel() function needs to be available for the PV
driver modules.
Consolidate elfcorehdr_addr, setup_elfcorehdr and saved_max_pfn into
kernel/crash_dump.c Also export elfcorehdr_addr to make is_kdump_kernel()
usable for modules.
Leave 'elfcorehdr' as early_param(). This changes powerpc from __setup()
to early_param(). It adds an address range check from x86 also on ia64
and powerpc.

For arch which needs USE_GENERIC_SMP_HELPERS, it has to select
USE_GENERIC_SMP_HELPERS, rather than leaving a choice to user, since they
don't provide their own implementions.
Also, move on_each_cpu() to kernel/smp.c, it is strange to put it in
kernel/softirq.c.
For arch which doesn't use USE_GENERIC_SMP_HELPERS, e.g. blackfin, only
on_each_cpu() is compiled.

If you try to build a kernel with KCONFIG_CONFIG set (to a value
not equal to .config) and that config sets CONFIG_IKCONFIG then the
build will fail with:
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `.config', needed by \
`kernel/config_data.gz'. Stop.
because the kernel/Makefile contains a direct reference to .config.
This issue has been present since the introduction of KCONFIG_CONFIG
in 14cdd3c402.

Fix up trivial conflicts in arch/x86/kernel/setup.c and kernel/Makefile
Provide a mechanism that allows running code in IRQ context. It is
most useful for NMI code that needs to interact with the rest of the
system -- like wakeup a task to drain buffers.
Perf currently has such a mechanism, so extract that and provide it as
a generic feature, independent of perf so that others may also
benefit.
The IRQ context callback is generated through self-IPIs where
possible, or on architectures like powerpc the decrementer (the
built-in timer facility) is set to generate an interrupt immediately.
Architectures that don't have anything like this get to do with a
callback from the timer tick. These architectures can call
irq_work_run() at the tail of any IRQ handlers that might enqueue such
work (like the perf IRQ handler) to avoid undue latencies in
processing the work.

base patch to implement 'jump labeling'. Based on a new 'asm goto' inline
assembly gcc mechanism, we can now branch to labels from an 'asm goto'
statment. This allows us to create a 'no-op' fastpath, which can subsequently
be patched with a jump to the slowpath code. This is useful for code which
might be rarely used, but which we'd like to be able to call, if needed.
Tracepoints are the current usecase that these are being implemented for.

Implement a small-memory-footprint uniprocessor-only implementation of
preemptible RCU. This implementation uses but a single blocked-tasks
list rather than the combinatorial number used per leaf rcu_node by
TREE_PREEMPT_RCU, which reduces memory consumption and greatly simplifies
processing. This version also takes advantage of uniprocessor execution
to accelerate grace periods in the case where there are no readers.
The general design is otherwise broadly similar to that of TREE_PREEMPT_RCU.
This implementation is a step towards having RCU implementation driven
off of the SMP and PREEMPT kernel configuration variables, which can
happen once this implementation has accumulated sufficient experience.
Removed ACCESS_ONCE() from __rcu_read_unlock() and added barrier() as
suggested by Steve Rostedt in order to avoid the compiler-reordering
issue noted by Mathieu Desnoyers (http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/8/16/183).
As can be seen below, CONFIG_TINY_PREEMPT_RCU represents almost 5Kbyte
savings compared to CONFIG_TREE_PREEMPT_RCU. Of course, for non-real-time
workloads, CONFIG_TINY_RCU is even better.

Fixed up conflicts in fs/cifs/* as per Tejun. Other trivial conflicts in
include/linux/workqueue.h, kernel/trace/Kconfig and kernel/workqueue.c
Audit watch should depend on CONFIG_AUDIT_SYSCALL and should select
FSNOTIFY. This splits the spagetti like mixing of audit_watch and
audit_filter code so they can be configured seperately.

The new nmi_watchdog (which uses the perf event subsystem) is very
similar in structure to the softlockup detector. Using Ingo's
suggestion, I combined the two functionalities into one file:
kernel/watchdog.c.
Now both the nmi_watchdog (or hardlockup detector) and softlockup
detector sit on top of the perf event subsystem, which is run every
60 seconds or so to see if there are any lockups.
To detect hardlockups, cpus not responding to interrupts, I
implemented an hrtimer that runs 5 times for every perf event
overflow event. If that stops counting on a cpu, then the cpu is
most likely in trouble.
To detect softlockups, tasks not yielding to the scheduler, I used the
previous kthread idea that now gets kicked every time the hrtimer fires.
If the kthread isn't being scheduled neither is anyone else and the
warning is printed to the console.
I tested this on x86_64 and both the softlockup and hardlockup paths
work.

When !CONFIG_SMP, cpu_stop functions weren't defined at all which
could lead to build failures if UP code uses cpu_stop facility. Add
dummy cpu_stop implementation for UP. The waiting variants execute
the work function directly with preempt disabled and
stop_one_cpu_nowait() schedules a workqueue work.
Makefile and ifdefs around stop_machine implementation are updated to
accomodate CONFIG_SMP && !CONFIG_STOP_MACHINE case.

elf_core_dump() and elf_fdpic_core_dump() use #ifdef and the corresponding
macro for hiding _multiline_ logics in functions. This patch removes
#ifdef and replaces ELF_CORE_EXTRA_* by corresponding functions. For
architectures not implemeonting ELF_CORE_EXTRA_*, we use weak functions in
order to reduce a range of modification.
This cleanup is for my next patches, but I think this cleanup itself is
worth doing regardless of my firnal purpose.

We have almost the same code for mtrr cleanup and amd_bus checkup, and
this code will also be used in replacing bootmem with early_res,
so try to move them together and reuse it from different parts.
Also rename update_range to subtract_range as that is what the
function is actually doing.

This patch is a version of RCU designed for !SMP provided for a
small-footprint RCU implementation. In particular, the
implementation of synchronize_rcu() is extremely lightweight and
high performance. It passes rcutorture testing in each of the
four relevant configurations (combinations of NO_HZ and PREEMPT)
on x86. This saves about 1K bytes compared to old Classic RCU
(which is no longer in mainline), and more than three kilobytes
compared to Hierarchical RCU (updated to 2.6.30):

Merge reason: We need to be uptodate with the perf events development
branch because we plan to rewrite the breakpoints API on top of
perf events.
While it's architecturally clean to have the cgroup debug subsystem be
completely independent of the cgroups framework, it limits its usefulness
for debugging the contents of internal data structures. Move the debug
subsystem code into the scope of all the cgroups data structures to make
more detailed debugging possible.

Bye-bye Performance Counters, welcome Performance Events!
In the past few months the perfcounters subsystem has grown out its
initial role of counting hardware events, and has become (and is
becoming) a much broader generic event enumeration, reporting, logging,
monitoring, analysis facility.
Naming its core object 'perf_counter' and naming the subsystem
'perfcounters' has become more and more of a misnomer. With pending
code like hw-breakpoints support the 'counter' name is less and
less appropriate.
All in one, we've decided to rename the subsystem to 'performance
events' and to propagate this rename through all fields, variables
and API names. (in an ABI compatible fashion)
The word 'event' is also a bit shorter than 'counter' - which makes
it slightly more convenient to write/handle as well.
Thanks goes to Stephane Eranian who first observed this misnomer and
suggested a rename.
User-space tooling and ABI compatibility is not affected - this patch
should be function-invariant. (Also, defconfigs were not touched to
keep the size down.)

change to the point in time where the amount of pending patches

Namespace clashes were fixed up in a preparatory patch - and some
stylistic fallout will be fixed up in a subsequent patch.
( NOTE: 'counters' are still the proper terminology when we deal
with hardware registers - and these sed scripts are a bit
over-eager in renaming them. I've undone some of that, but
in case there's something left where 'counter' would be
better than 'event' we can undo that on an individual basis
instead of touching an otherwise nicely automated patch. )

Create a kernel/rcutree_plugin.h file that contains definitions
for preemptable RCU (or, under the #else branch of the #ifdef,
empty definitions for the classic non-preemptable semantics).
These definitions fit into plugins defined in kernel/rcutree.c
for this purpose.
This variant of preemptable RCU uses a new algorithm whose
read-side expense is roughly that of classic hierarchical RCU
under CONFIG_PREEMPT. This new algorithm's update-side expense
is similar to that of classic hierarchical RCU, and, in absence
of read-side preemption or blocking, is exactly that of classic
hierarchical RCU. Perhaps more important, this new algorithm
has a much simpler implementation, saving well over 1,000 lines
of code compared to mainline's implementation of preemptable
RCU, which will hopefully be retired in favor of this new
algorithm.
The simplifications are obtained by maintaining per-task
nesting state for running tasks, and using a simple
lock-protected algorithm to handle accounting when tasks block
within RCU read-side critical sections, making use of lessons
learned while creating numerous user-level RCU implementations
over the past 18 months.

If CONFIG_IKCONFIG is set but CONFIG_IKCONFIG_PROC is not, then
gcc will optimize the config.gz out, because nobody uses it.
This patch adds "__used" to the config.gz data to keep it around so that
code like extract-ikconfig can still find it.

In hunting down the cause for the hwlat_detector ring buffer spew in
my failed -next builds it became obvious that folks are now treating
ring_buffer as something that is generic independent of tracing and thus,
suitable for public driver consumption.
Given that there are only a few minor areas in ring_buffer that have any
reliance on CONFIG_TRACING or CONFIG_FUNCTION_TRACER, provide stubs for
those and make it generally available.

Even though one cannot make use of the audit watch code without
CONFIG_AUDIT_SYSCALL the spaghetti nature of the audit code means that
the audit rule filtering requires that it at least be compiled.
Thus build the audit_watch code when we build auditfilter like it was
before cfcad62c74
Clearly this is a point of potential future cleanup..

Remove Classic RCU, given that the combination of Tree RCU and
the proposed Bloatwatch RCU do everything that Classic RCU can
with fewer bugs.
Tree RCU has been default in x86 builds for almost six months,
and seems to be quite reliable, so there does not seem to be
much justification for keeping the Classic RCU code and config
complexity around anymore.

Enable the use of GCC's coverage testing tool gcov [1] with the Linux
kernel. gcov may be useful for:
* debugging (has this code been reached at all?)
* test improvement (how do I change my test to cover these lines?)
* minimizing kernel configurations (do I need this option if the
associated code is never run?)
The profiling patch incorporates the following changes:
* change kbuild to include profiling flags
* provide functions needed by profiling code
* present profiling data as files in debugfs
Note that on some architectures, enabling gcc's profiling option
"-fprofile-arcs" for the entire kernel may trigger compile/link/
run-time problems, some of which are caused by toolchain bugs and
others which require adjustment of architecture code.
For this reason profiling the entire kernel is initially restricted
to those architectures for which it is known to work without changes.
This restriction can be lifted once an architecture has been tested
and found compatible with gcc's profiling. Profiling of single files
or directories is still available on all platforms (see config help
text).

Move supplementary groups implementation to kernel/groups.c .
kernel/sys.c already accumulated quite a few random stuff.

This patch introduces the generic Hardware Breakpoint interfaces for both user
and kernel space requests.
This core Api handles the hardware breakpoints through new helpers. It
handles the user-space breakpoints and kernel breakpoints in front of
arch implementation.
One can choose kernel wide breakpoints using the following helpers
and passing them a generic struct hw_breakpoint:
- register_kernel_hw_breakpoint()
- unregister_kernel_hw_breakpoint()
- modify_kernel_hw_breakpoint()
On the other side, you can choose per task breakpoints.
- register_user_hw_breakpoint()
- unregister_user_hw_breakpoint()
- modify_user_hw_breakpoint()

Create a dynamically sized pool of threads for doing very slow work items, such
as invoking mkdir() or rmdir() - things that may take a long time and may
sleep, holding mutexes/semaphores and hogging a thread, and are thus unsuitable
for workqueues.
The number of threads is always at least a settable minimum, but more are
started when there's more work to do, up to a limit. Because of the nature of
the load, it's not suitable for a 1-thread-per-CPU type pool. A system with
one CPU may well want several threads.
This is used by FS-Cache to do slow caching operations in the background, such
as looking up, creating or deleting cache objects.

If you do
smp_call_function_single(expression-with-side-effects, ...)
then expression-with-side-effects never gets evaluated on UP builds.
As always, implementing it in C is the correct thing to do.
While we're there, uninline it for size and possible header dependency
reasons.
And create a new kernel/up.c, as a place in which to put
uniprocessor-specific code and storage. It should mirror kernel/smp.c.

Right now, most of the kernel boot is strictly synchronous, such that
various hardware delays are done sequentially.
In order to make the kernel boot faster, this patch introduces
infrastructure to allow doing some of the initialization steps
asynchronously, which will hide significant portions of the hardware delays
in practice.
In order to not change device order and other similar observables, this
patch does NOT do full parallel initialization.
Rather, it operates more in the way an out of order CPU does; the work may
be done out of order and asynchronous, but the observable effects
(instruction retiring for the CPU) are still done in the original sequence.

This patch fixes a long-standing performance bug in classic RCU that
results in massive internal-to-RCU lock contention on systems with
more than a few hundred CPUs. Although this patch creates a separate
flavor of RCU for ease of review and patch maintenance, it is intended
to replace classic RCU.
This patch still handles stress better than does mainline, so I am still
calling it ready for inclusion. This patch is against the -tip tree.
Nevertheless, experience on an actual 1000+ CPU machine would still be
most welcome.
Most of the changes noted below were found while creating an rcutiny
(which should permit ejecting the current rcuclassic) and while doing
detailed line-by-line documentation.

manipulated for all forms of RCU, instead of the prior
confusion.
o Document tracing files and formats for both rcupreempt
and rcutree.
Updates from v4 for those missing v5 given its bad subject line:
o Separated dynticks interface so that NMIs and irqs call separate
functions, greatly simplifying it. In particular, this code
no longer requires a proof of correctness. ;-)
o Separated dynticks state out into its own per-CPU structure,
avoiding the duplicated accounting.
o The case where a dynticks-idle CPU runs an irq handler that
invokes call_rcu() is now correctly handled, forcing that CPU
out of dynticks-idle mode.
o Review comments have been applied (thank you all!!!).
For but one example, fixed the dynticks-ordering issue that
Manfred pointed out, saving me much debugging. ;-)
o Adjusted rcuclassic and rcupreempt to handle dynticks changes.
Attached is an updated patch to Classic RCU that applies a hierarchy,
greatly reducing the contention on the top-level lock for large machines.
This passes 10-hour concurrent rcutorture and online-offline testing on
128-CPU ppc64 without dynticks enabled, and exposes some timekeeping
bugs in presence of dynticks (exciting working on a system where
"sleep 1" hangs until interrupted...), which were fixed in the
2.6.27 kernel. It is getting more reliable than mainline by some
measures, so the next version will be against -tip for inclusion.

We will converge onto a common patch in the fullness of time, but are
currently exploring different regions of the design space. That said,
I have already gratefully stolen quite a few of Manfred's ideas.
This patch provides CONFIG_RCU_FANOUT, which controls the bushiness
of the RCU hierarchy. Defaults to 32 on 32-bit machines and 64 on
64-bit machines. If CONFIG_NR_CPUS is less than CONFIG_RCU_FANOUT,
there is no hierarchy. By default, the RCU initialization code will
adjust CONFIG_RCU_FANOUT to balance the hierarchy, so strongly NUMA
architectures may choose to set CONFIG_RCU_FANOUT_EXACT to disable
this balancing, allowing the hierarchy to be exactly aligned to the
underlying hardware. Up to two levels of hierarchy are permitted
(in addition to the root node), allowing up to 16,384 CPUs on 32-bit
systems and up to 262,144 CPUs on 64-bit systems. I just know that I
am going to regret saying this, but this seems more than sufficient
for the foreseeable future. (Some architectures might wish to set
CONFIG_RCU_FANOUT=4, which would limit such architectures to 64 CPUs.
If this becomes a real problem, additional levels can be added, but I
doubt that it will make a significant difference on real hardware.)
In the common case, a given CPU will manipulate its private rcu_data
structure and the rcu_node structure that it shares with its immediate
neighbors. This can reduce both lock and memory contention by multiple
orders of magnitude, which should eliminate the need for the strange
manipulations that are reported to be required when running Linux on
very large systems.
Some shortcomings:
o More bugs will probably surface as a result of an ongoing
line-by-line code inspection.
Patches will be provided as required.
o There are probably hangs, rcutorture failures, &c. Seems
quite stable on a 128-CPU machine, but that is kind of small
compared to 4096 CPUs. However, seems to do better than
mainline.
Patches will be provided as required.
o The memory footprint of this version is several KB larger
than rcuclassic.
A separate UP-only rcutiny patch will be provided, which will
reduce the memory footprint significantly, even compared
to the old rcuclassic. One such patch passes light testing,
and has a memory footprint smaller even than rcuclassic.
Initial reaction from various embedded guys was "it is not
worth it", so am putting it aside.

Implement the core kernel bits of Performance Counters subsystem.
The Linux Performance Counter subsystem provides an abstraction of
performance counter hardware capabilities. It provides per task and per
CPU counters, and it provides event capabilities on top of those.
Performance counters are accessed via special file descriptors.
There's one file descriptor per virtual counter used.
The special file descriptor is opened via the perf_counter_open()
system call:

The syscall returns the new fd. The fd can be used via the normal
VFS system calls: read() can be used to read the counter, fcntl()
can be used to set the blocking mode, etc.
Multiple counters can be kept open at a time, and the counters
can be poll()ed.

For some unknown reason at Steven Rostedt added in disabling of the SPE
instruction generation for e500 based PPC cores in commit
6ec562328f.
We are removing it because:
1. It generates e500 kernels that don't work
2. its not the correct set of flags to do this
3. we handle this in the arch/powerpc/Makefile already
4. its unknown in talking to Steven why he did this

We had this ugly config name for a long time for hysteric raisons.
Rename it to a saner name.
We still cannot get rid of it completely, until /proc/<pid>/stack
usage replaces WCHAN usage for good.
We'll be able to do that in the v2.6.29/v2.6.30 timeframe.
