Instead of receiving the num_crts as a parameter, we can read it
directly from the mode_config structure. I audited the drivers that
invoke this helper and I believe all of them initialize the mode_config
struct accordingly, prior to calling the fb_helper.
I used the following coccinelle hack to make this transformation, except
for the function headers and comment updates. The first and second
rules are split because I couldn't find a way to remove the unused

- new connector_list locking+iterators
- plenty of kerneldoc updates
- format handling rework from Ville
- atomic helper changes from Maarten for better plane corner-case handling
in drivers, plus the i915 legacy cursor patch that needs this
- bridge cleanup from Laurent
- plus plenty of small stuff all over
- also contains a merge of the 4.10 docs tree so that we could apply the
dma-buf kerneldoc patches
It's a lot more than usual, but due to the merge window blackout it also
covers about 4 weeks, so all in line again on a per-week basis. The more
annoying part with no pull request for 4 weeks is managing cross-tree
work. The -intel pull request I'll follow up with does conflict quite a
bit with -misc here. Longer-term (if drm-misc keeps growing) a
drm-next-queued to accept pull request for the next merge window during
this time might be useful.
I'd also like to backmerge -rc2+this into drm-intel next week, we have
quite a pile of patches waiting for the stuff in here.

<drm/drm_crtc.h> used to define most of the in-kernel KMS API. It has
now been split into separate files for each object type, but still
includes most other KMS headers to avoid breaking driver compilation.
As a step towards fixing that problem, remove the inclusion of
<drm/drm_encoder.h> from <drm/drm_crtc.h> and include it instead where
appropriate. Also remove the forward declarations of the drm_encoder and
drm_encoder_helper_funcs structures from <drm/drm_crtc.h> as they're not
needed in the header.
<drm/drm_encoder.h> now has to include <drm/drm_mode.h> and contain a
forward declaration of struct drm_encoder in order to allow including it
as the first header in a compilation unit.

Before commit a325725633 ("drm: Lobotomize set_busid nonsense for !pci
drivers"), several DRM drivers for platform devices used to expose an
explicit "drm_driver.set_busid" callback, invariably backed by
drm_platform_set_busid().
Commit a325725633 removed drm_platform_set_busid(), along with the
referring .set_busid field initializations. This was justified because
interchangeable functionality had been implemented in drm_dev_alloc() /
drm_dev_init(), which DRM_IOCTL_SET_VERSION would rely on going forward.
However, commit a325725633 also removed drm_virtio_set_busid(), for
which the same consolidation was not appropriate: this .set_busid callback
had been implemented with drm_pci_set_busid(), and not
drm_platform_set_busid(). The error regressed Xorg/xserver on QEMU's
"virtio-vga" card; the drmGetBusid() function from libdrm would no longer
return stable PCI identifiers like "pci:0000:00:02.0", but rather unstable
platform ones like "virtio0".
Reinstate drm_virtio_set_busid() with judicious use of

Drivers may set the NO_DISABLE_AFTER_MODESET flag in the 'flags' parameter
of the helper drm_atomic_helper_commit_planes() if the relevant display
controllers(e.g., IPUv3 for imx-drm) require to disable a CRTC's planes
when the CRTC is disabled. The helper would skip the ->atomic_disable
call for a plane if the CRTC of the old plane state needs a modesetting
operation. Of course, the drivers need to disable the planes in their CRTC
disable callbacks since no one else would do that.

Lots of drivers don't properly compile without this when CONFIG_FB=n.
It's kinda a hack, but since CONFIG_FB doesn't stub any fucntions when
it's disabled I think it makes sense to add it to drm_fb_helper.h.
Long term we probably need to rethink all the logic to unload firmware
framebuffer drivers, at least if we want to be able to move away from
CONFIG_FB and fbcon.
v2: Unfortunately just stubbing out remove_conflicting_framebuffers in
drm_fb_helper.h upset gcc about static vs. non-static declarations, so
a new wrapper it needs to be. Means more churn :(

dev->unique, which is set to something reasonable in drm_dev_alloc.
Which means we only need to have a special set_busid for pci devices,
to be able to care the backwards compat code for drm 1.1 around, which
libdrm still needs.
While developing and testing this patch things blew up in really
interesting ways, and the code is rather confusing in naming things

checkpatch.pl wants arrays of strings declared as follows:
static const char * const names[] = { "vq-1", "vq-2", "vq-3" };
Currently the find_vqs() function takes a const char *names[] argument
so passing checkpatch.pl's const char * const names[] results in a
compiler error due to losing the second const.
This patch adjusts the find_vqs() prototype and updates all virtio

Now that the mode type bit merge logic is fixed to only merge
between new probed modes, hopefully we can eliminat the special
case for qxl and virtio. That is make the merge the mode type
bits from all matching new probed modes, just like every other
driver.
qxl and virtio got excluded from the merging in
commit 3fbd6439e4 ("drm: copy mode type in drm_mode_connector_list_update()")
commit abce1ec9b0 ("Revert "drm: copy mode type in drm_mode_connector_list_update()"")
commit b87577b7c7 ("drm: try harder to avoid regression when merging mode bits")

Done with coccinelle for the most part. It choked on
msm/mdp/mdp5/mdp5_plane.c like so:
"BAD:!!!!! enum drm_plane_type type;"
No idea how to deal with that, so I just fixed that up
by hand.
Also it thinks '...' is part of the semantic patch, so I put an
'int DOTDOTDOT' placeholder in its place and got rid of it with
sed afterwards.
I didn't convert drm_plane_init() since passing the varargs through
would mean either cpp macros or va_list, and I figured we don't
care about these legacy functions enough to warrant the extra pain.

Back merge tag 'v4.4-rc4' into drm-next
We've picked up a few conflicts and it would be nice
to resolve them before we move onwards.
Avoid the sticky preferred mode bit by using the no-merge version of the
function (this allows gnome-shell to resize to lower resolutions than
the default resolution)

I noticed that intel_fbdev->our_mode is unused. Introduced by
79e539453b ("DRM: i915: add mode setting support").
Then I noticed that intel_fbdev->fbdev_list is unused as well.
Introduced by 386516744b ("drm/fb: fix fbdev object model +
cleanup properly.") in i915, nouveau and radeon.
Subsequently cargo culted to amdgpu, ast, cirrus, qxl, udl,
virtio and mgag200.
Already removed from the latter with cc59487a05 ("drm/mgag200:
'fbdev_list' in 'struct mga_fbdev' is not used").
Remove it from the others.

Add helper function to handle the submission of fenced control requests.

requests can't be reordered.

Add virtio_gpu_queue_ctrl_buffer_locked function, which does the same as
virtio_gpu_queue_ctrl_buffer but does not take the virtqueue lock. The
caller must hold the lock instead.

The virtgpu driver prints the last_seq variable using the %ld or
%lu format string, which does not work correctly on all architectures
and causes this compiler warning on ARM:
drivers/gpu/drm/virtio/virtgpu_fence.c: In function 'virtio_timeline_value_str':
drivers/gpu/drm/virtio/virtgpu_fence.c:64:22: warning: format '%lu' expects argument of type 'long unsigned int', but argument 4 has type 'long long int' [-Wformat=]
snprintf(str, size, "%lu", atomic64_read(&fence->drv->last_seq));
^
drivers/gpu/drm/virtio/virtgpu_debugfs.c: In function 'virtio_gpu_debugfs_irq_info':
drivers/gpu/drm/virtio/virtgpu_debugfs.c:37:16: warning: format '%ld' expects argument of type 'long int', but argument 3 has type 'long long int' [-Wformat=]
seq_printf(m, "fence %ld %lld\n",
^
In order to avoid the warnings, this changes the format strings to %llu
and adds a cast to u64, which makes it work the same way everywhere.

This patch adds a kms driver for the virtio gpu. The xorg modesetting
driver can handle the device just fine, the framebuffer for fbcon is
there too.
Qemu patches for the host side are under review currently.
The pci version of the device comes in two variants: with and without
vga compatibility. The former has a extra memory bar for the vga
framebuffer, the later is a pure virtio device. The only concern for
this driver is that in the virtio-vga case we have to kick out the
firmware framebuffer.
Initial revision has only 2d support, 3d (virgl) support requires
some more work on the qemu side and will be added later.
