Peter Oruba 80cc9f1020 x86: AMD microcode patch loading support
This patch introduces microcode patch loading for AMD
processors. It is based on previous corresponding work
for Intel processors.

It hooks into the general patch loading module. Main
difference is that a container file format is used to hold
all patch data for multiple processors as well as an
equivalent CPU table, which comes seperately, as opposed
to Intel's microcode patching solution.

Kconfig and Makefile have been changed provice config
and build option for new source file.

Peter Oruba 8d86f390d9 x86: major refactoring
Refactored code by introducing a two-module solution.

There is one general module in which vendor specific modules can hook into.
However, that is exclusive, there is only one vendor specific module
allowed at a time. A CPU vendor check makes sure only the correct
module for the underlying system gets called.

Functinally in terms of patch loading itself there are no changes. This
refactoring provides a basis for future implementations of other vendors'
patch loaders.

Nick Piggin 8174c430e4 x86: lockless get_user_pages_fast()
Implement get_user_pages_fast without locking in the fastpath on x86.

Do an optimistic lockless pagetable walk, without taking mmap_sem or any
page table locks or even mmap_sem. Page table existence is guaranteed by
turning interrupts off (combined with the fact that we're always looking
up the current mm, means we can do the lockless page table walk within the
constraints of the TLB shootdown design). Basically we can do this
lockless pagetable walk in a similar manner to the way the CPU's pagetable
walker does not have to take any locks to find present ptes.

This patch (combined with the subsequent ones to convert direct IO to use
it) was found to give about 10% performance improvement on a 2 socket 8
core Intel Xeon system running an OLTP workload on DB2 v9.5

 "To test the effects of the patch, an OLTP workload was run on an IBM
  x3850 M2 server with 2 processors (quad-core Intel Xeon processors at
  2.93 GHz) using IBM DB2 v9.5 running Linux 2.6.24rc7 kernel. Comparing
  runs with and without the patch resulted in an overall performance
  benefit of ~9.8%. Correspondingly, oprofiles showed that samples from
  __up_read and __down_read routines that is seen during thread contention
  for system resources was reduced from 2.8% down to .05%. Monitoring the
  /proc/vmstat output from the patched run showed that the counter for
  fast_gup contained a very high number while the fast_gup_slow value was
  zero."

(fast_gup is the old name for get_user_pages_fast, fast_gup_slow is a
counter we had for the number of times the slowpath was invoked).

The main reason for the improvement is that DB2 has multiple threads each
issuing direct-IO. Direct-IO uses get_user_pages, and thus the threads
contend the mmap_sem cacheline, and can also contend on page table locks.

I would anticipate larger performance gains on larger systems, however I
think DB2 uses an adaptive mix of threads and processes, so it could be
that thread contention remains pretty constant as machine size increases.
In which case, we stuck with "only" a 10% gain.

The downside of using get_user_pages_fast is that if there is not a pte
with the correct permissions for the access, we end up falling back to
get_user_pages and so the get_user_pages_fast is a bit of extra work.
However this should not be the common case in most performance critical
code.

Huang Ying 89081d17f7 kexec jump: save/restore device state
This patch implements devices state save/restore before after kexec.

This patch together with features in kexec_jump patch can be used for
following:

- A simple hibernation implementation without ACPI support. You can kexec a
  hibernating kernel, save the memory image of original system and shutdown
  the system. When resuming, you restore the memory image of original system
  via ordinary kexec load then jump back.

- Kernel/system debug through making system snapshot. You can make system
  snapshot, jump back, do some thing and make another system snapshot.

- Cooperative multi-kernel/system. With kexec jump, you can switch between
  several kernels/systems quickly without boot process except the first time.
  This appears like swap a whole kernel/system out/in.

- A general method to call program in physical mode (paging turning
  off). This can be used to invoke BIOS code under Linux.

The following user-space tools can be used with kexec jump:

- kexec-tools needs to be patched to support kexec jump. The patches
  and the precompiled kexec can be download from the following URL:
       source: http://khibernation.sourceforge.net/download/release_v10/kexec-tools/kexec-tools-src_git_kh10.tar.bz2
       patches: http://khibernation.sourceforge.net/download/release_v10/kexec-tools/kexec-tools-patches_git_kh10.tar.bz2
       binary: http://khibernation.sourceforge.net/download/release_v10/kexec-tools/kexec_git_kh10

- makedumpfile with patches are used as memory image saving tool, it
  can exclude free pages from original kernel memory image file. The
  patches and the precompiled makedumpfile can be download from the
  following URL:
       source: http://khibernation.sourceforge.net/download/release_v10/makedumpfile/makedumpfile-src_cvs_kh10.tar.bz2
       patches: http://khibernation.sourceforge.net/download/release_v10/makedumpfile/makedumpfile-patches_cvs_kh10.tar.bz2
       binary: http://khibernation.sourceforge.net/download/release_v10/makedumpfile/makedumpfile_cvs_kh10

- An initramfs image can be used as the root file system of kexeced
  kernel. An initramfs image built with "BuildRoot" can be downloaded
  from the following URL:
       initramfs image: http://khibernation.sourceforge.net/download/release_v10/initramfs/rootfs_cvs_kh10.gz
  All user space tools above are included in the initramfs image.

Usage example of simple hibernation:

1. Compile and install patched kernel with following options selected:

CONFIG_X86_32=y
CONFIG_RELOCATABLE=y
CONFIG_KEXEC=y
CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP=y
CONFIG_PM=y
CONFIG_HIBERNATION=y
CONFIG_KEXEC_JUMP=y

2. Build an initramfs image contains kexec-tool and makedumpfile, or
   download the pre-built initramfs image, called rootfs.gz in
   following text.

3. Prepare a partition to save memory image of original kernel, called
   hibernating partition in following text.

4. Boot kernel compiled in step 1 (kernel A).

5. In the kernel A, load kernel compiled in step 1 (kernel B) with
   /sbin/kexec. The shell command line can be as follow:

   /sbin/kexec --load-preserve-context /boot/bzImage --mem-min=0x100000
     --mem-max=0xffffff --initrd=rootfs.gz

6. Boot the kernel B with following shell command line:

   /sbin/kexec -e

7. The kernel B will boot as normal kexec. In kernel B the memory
   image of kernel A can be saved into hibernating partition as
   follow:

   jump_back_entry=`cat /proc/cmdline | tr ' ' '\n' | grep kexec_jump_back_entry | cut -d '='`
   echo $jump_back_entry > kexec_jump_back_entry
   cp /proc/vmcore dump.elf

   Then you can shutdown the machine as normal.

8. Boot kernel compiled in step 1 (kernel C). Use the rootfs.gz as
   root file system.

9. In kernel C, load the memory image of kernel A as follow:

   /sbin/kexec -l --args-none --entry=`cat kexec_jump_back_entry` dump.elf

10. Jump back to the kernel A as follow:

   /sbin/kexec -e

   Then, kernel A is resumed.

Implementation point:

To support jumping between two kernels, before jumping to (executing)
the new kernel and jumping back to the original kernel, the devices
are put into quiescent state, and the state of devices and CPU is
saved. After jumping back from kexeced kernel and jumping to the new
kernel, the state of devices and CPU are restored accordingly. The
devices/CPU state save/restore code of software suspend is called to
implement corresponding function.

Known issues:

- Because the segment number supported by sys_kexec_load is limited,
  hibernation image with many segments may not be load. This is
  planned to be eliminated by adding a new flag to sys_kexec_load to
  make a image can be loaded with multiple sys_kexec_load invoking.

Now, only the i386 architecture is supported.

Huang Ying 3ab8352137 kexec jump
This patch provides an enhancement to kexec/kdump. It implements the
following features:

- Backup/restore memory used by the original kernel before/after
  kexec.

- Save/restore CPU state before/after kexec.

The features of this patch can be used as a general method to call program in
physical mode (paging turning off). This can be used to call BIOS code under
Linux.

kexec-tools needs to be patched to support kexec jump. The patches and
the precompiled kexec can be download from the following URL:

       source: http://khibernation.sourceforge.net/download/release_v10/kexec-tools/kexec-tools-src_git_kh10.tar.bz2
       patches: http://khibernation.sourceforge.net/download/release_v10/kexec-tools/kexec-tools-patches_git_kh10.tar.bz2
       binary: http://khibernation.sourceforge.net/download/release_v10/kexec-tools/kexec_git_kh10

Usage example of calling some physical mode code and return:

1. Compile and install patched kernel with following options selected:

CONFIG_X86_32=y
CONFIG_KEXEC=y
CONFIG_PM=y
CONFIG_KEXEC_JUMP=y

2. Build patched kexec-tool or download the pre-built one.

3. Build some physical mode executable named such as "phy_mode"

4. Boot kernel compiled in step 1.

5. Load physical mode executable with /sbin/kexec. The shell command
   line can be as follow:

   /sbin/kexec --load-preserve-context --args-none phy_mode

6. Call physical mode executable with following shell command line:

   /sbin/kexec -e

Implementation point:

To support jumping without reserving memory. One shadow backup page (source
page) is allocated for each page used by kexeced code image (destination
page). When do kexec_load, the image of kexeced code is loaded into source
pages, and before executing, the destination pages and the source pages are
swapped, so the contents of destination pages are backupped. Before jumping
to the kexeced code image and after jumping back to the original kernel, the
destination pages and the source pages are swapped too.

C ABI (calling convention) is used as communication protocol between
kernel and called code.

A flag named KEXEC_PRESERVE_CONTEXT for sys_kexec_load is added to
indicate that the loaded kernel image is used for jumping back.

Now, only the i386 architecture is supported.

Michael Buesch 7444a72eff gpiolib: allow user-selection
This patch adds functionality to the gpio-lib subsystem to make it
possible to enable the gpio-lib code even if the architecture code didn't
request to get it built in.

The archtitecture code does still need to implement the gpiolib accessor
functions in its asm/gpio.h file. This patch adds the implementations for
x86 and PPC.

With these changes it is possible to run generic GPIO expansion cards on
every architecture that implements the trivial wrapper functions. Support
for more architectures can easily be added.

Johannes Berg 58340a07c1 introduce HAVE_EFFICIENT_UNALIGNED_ACCESS Kconfig symbol
In many cases, especially in networking, it can be beneficial to know at
compile time whether the architecture can do unaligned accesses efficiently.
This patch introduces a new Kconfig symbol

	HAVE_EFFICIENT_UNALIGNED_ACCESS

for that purpose and adds it to the powerpc and x86 architectures. Also add
some documentation about alignment and networking, and especially one intended
use of this symbol.

Stefan Assmann 41b9eb264c x86, pci: introduce config option for pci reroute quirks (was: [PATCH 0/3] Boot IRQ quirks for Broadcom and AMD/ATI)
This is against linux-2.6-tip, branch pci-ioapic-boot-irq-quirks.

From: Stefan Assmann <sassmann@suse.de>
Subject: Introduce config option for pci reroute quirks

The config option X86_REROUTE_FOR_BROKEN_BOOT_IRQS is introduced to
enable (or disable) the redirection of the interrupt handler to the boot
interrupt line by default. Depending on the existence of interrupt
masking / threaded interrupt handling in the kernel (vanilla, rt, ...)
and the maturity of the rerouting patch, users can enable or disable the
redirection by default.

This means that the reroute quirk can be applied to any kernel without
changing it.

Interrupt sharing could be increased if this option is enabled. However this
option is vital for threaded interrupt handling, as done by the RT kernel.
It should simplify the consolidation with the RT kernel.

The option can be overridden by either pci=ioapicreroute or
pci=noioapicreroute.

Mike Travis 23ca4bba3e x86: cleanup early per cpu variables/accesses v4
* Introduce a new PER_CPU macro called "EARLY_PER_CPU". This is
    used by some per_cpu variables that are initialized and accessed
    before there are per_cpu areas allocated.

    ["Early" in respect to per_cpu variables is "earlier than the per_cpu
    areas have been setup".]

    This patchset adds these new macros:

	DEFINE_EARLY_PER_CPU(_type, _name, _initvalue)
	EXPORT_EARLY_PER_CPU_SYMBOL(_name)
	DECLARE_EARLY_PER_CPU(_type, _name)

	early_per_cpu_ptr(_name)
	early_per_cpu_map(_name, _idx)
	early_per_cpu(_name, _cpu)

    The DEFINE macro defines the per_cpu variable as well as the early
    map and pointer. It also initializes the per_cpu variable and map
    elements to "_initvalue". The early_* macros provide access to
    the initial map (usually setup during system init) and the early
    pointer. This pointer is initialized to point to the early map
    but is then NULL'ed when the actual per_cpu areas are setup. After
    that the per_cpu variable is the correct access to the variable.

    The early_per_cpu() macro is not very efficient but does show how to
    access the variable if you have a function that can be called both
    "early" and "late". It tests the early ptr to be NULL, and if not
    then it's still valid. Otherwise, the per_cpu variable is used
    instead:

	#define early_per_cpu(_name, _cpu) 			\
		(early_per_cpu_ptr(_name) ?			\
			early_per_cpu_ptr(_name)[_cpu] :	\
			per_cpu(_name, _cpu))

    A better method is to actually check the pointer manually. In the
    case below, numa_set_node can be called both "early" and "late":

	void __cpuinit numa_set_node(int cpu, int node)
	{
	    int *cpu_to_node_map = early_per_cpu_ptr(x86_cpu_to_node_map);

	    if (cpu_to_node_map)
		    cpu_to_node_map[cpu] = node;
	    else
		    per_cpu(x86_cpu_to_node_map, cpu) = node;
	}

  * Add a flag "arch_provides_topology_pointers" that indicates pointers
    to topology cpumask_t maps are available. Otherwise, use the function
    returning the cpumask_t value. This is useful if cpumask_t set size
    is very large to avoid copying data on to/off of the stack.

  * The coverage of CONFIG_DEBUG_PER_CPU_MAPS has been increased while
    the non-debug case has been optimized a bit.

  * Remove an unreferenced compiler warning in drivers/base/topology.c

  * Clean up #ifdef in setup.c

Andres Salomon 2bdd1b031b PCI/x86: fix up PCI stuff so that PCI_GOANY supports OLPC
Previously, one would have to specifically choose CONFIG_OLPC and
CONFIG_PCI_GOOLPC in order to enable PCI_OLPC. That doesn't really work
for distro kernels, so this patch allows one to choose CONFIG_OLPC and
CONFIG_PCI_GOANY in order to build in OLPC support in a generic kernel (as
requested by Robert Millan).

This also moves GOOLPC before GOANY in the menuconfig list.

Finally, make pci_access_init return early if we detect OLPC hardware.
There's no need to continue probing stuff, and pci_pcbios_init
specifically trashes our settings (we didn't run into that before because
PCI_GOANY wasn't supported).

Steven Rostedt 677aa9f77e ftrace: add have dynamic ftrace config for archs
Now that ftrace is being ported to other architectures, it has become
apparent that DYNAMIC_FTRACE is dependent on whether or not that
architecture implements dynamic ftrace. FTRACE itself may be ported to
an architecture without porting dynamic ftrace.

This patch adds HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE to allow architectures to port ftrace
without having to also port the dynamic aspect as well.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 16444a8a40 ftrace: add basic support for gcc profiler instrumentation
If CONFIG_FTRACE is selected and /proc/sys/kernel/ftrace_enabled is
set to a non-zero value the ftrace routine will be called everytime
we enter a kernel function that is not marked with the "notrace"
attribute.

The ftrace routine will then call a registered function if a function
happens to be registered.

[ This code has been highly hacked by Steven Rostedt and Ingo Molnar,
  so don't blame Arnaldo for all of this ;-) ]

Update:
  It is now possible to register more than one ftrace function.
  If only one ftrace function is registered, that will be the
  function that ftrace calls directly. If more than one function
  is registered, then ftrace will call a function that will loop
  through the functions to call.

Sam Ravnborg b9b39bfba5 x86: use defconfigs from x86/configs/*
Daniel Drake <dsd@gentoo.org> reported:

In 2.6.23, if you unpacked a kernel source tarball and then
ran "make menuconfig" you'd be presented with this message:
    # using defaults found in arch/i386/defconfig

and the default options would be set.

The same thing in 2.6.24 does not give you any "using defaults" message, and
the default config options within menuconfig are rather blank (e.g. no PCI
support). You can work around this by explicitly running "make defconfig"
before menuconfig, but it would be nice to have the behaviour the way it was
for 2.6.23 (and the way it still is for other archs).

Fixed by adding a x86 specific defconfig list to Kconfig.

Turn CONFIG_DMI into a selectable option if EMBEDDED is defined, in
order to be able to remove the DMI table scanning code if it's not

With CONFIG_DMI (i.e before) :

   text data bss dec hex filename
1076076  128656   98304 1303036  13e1fc vmlinux

Without CONFIG_DMI (i.e after) :

   text data bss dec hex filename
1068092  126308   98304 1292704  13b9a0 vmlinux

Result:

  -7984   -2348       0  -10332   -285c vmlinux

The new option appears in "Processor type and features", only when
CONFIG_EMBEDDED is defined.

venkatesh.pallipadi@intel.com 2e5d9c857d x86: PAT infrastructure patch
Sets up pat_init() infrastructure.

PAT MSR has following setting.
	PAT
	|PCD
	||PWT
	|||
	000 WB		_PAGE_CACHE_WB
	001 WC		_PAGE_CACHE_WC
	010 UC-		_PAGE_CACHE_UC_MINUS
	011 UC		_PAGE_CACHE_UC

We are effectively changing WT from boot time setting to WC.
UC_MINUS is used to provide backward compatibility to existing /dev/mem
users(X).

reserve_memtype and free_memtype are new interfaces for maintaining alias-free
mapping. It is currently implemented in a simple way with a linked list and
not optimized. reserve and free tracks the effective memory type, as a result
of PAT and MTRR setting rather than what is actually requested in PAT.

pat_init piggy backs on mtrr_init as the rules for setting both pat and mtrr
are same.

Thomas Gleixner 985a34bd75 x86: remove quicklists
quicklists cause a serious memory leak on 32-bit x86,
as documented at:

  http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9991

the reason is that the quicklist pool is a special-purpose
cache that grows out of proportion. It is not accounted for
anywhere and users have no way to even realize that it's
the quicklists that are causing RAM usage spikes. It was
supposed to be a relatively small pool, but as demonstrated
by KOSAKI Motohiro, they can grow as large as:

  Quicklists:    1194304 kB

given how much trouble this code has caused historically,
and given that Andrew objected to its introduction on x86
(years ago), the best option at this point is to remove them.

[ any performance benefits of caching constructed pgds should
  be implemented in a more generic way (possibly within the page
  allocator), while still allowing constructed pages to be
  allocated by other workloads. ]

Linus Torvalds 2c020a99e0 Mark CC_STACKPROTECTOR as being BROKEN
It's always been broken, but recent fixes actually made it do something,
and now the brokenness shows up as the resulting kernel simply not
working at all.

So it used to be that you could enable this config option, and it just
didn't do anything. Now we'd better stop people from enabling it by
mistake, since it _does_ do something, but does it so badly as to be
unusable.

Code to actually make it work is pending, but incomplete and won't be

Venki Pallipadi a6869cc4cf cpuidle: build fix for non-x86
The last posted version of this patch gave compile error
on IA64. So, here goes yet another rewrite of the patch.

Convert cpu_idle_wait() to cpuidle_kick_cpus() which is
SMP-only, and gives error on non supported CPU.

Changes from last patch sent by Kevin:
Moved the definition of kick_cpus back to cpuidle.c from cpuidle.h:
* Having it in .h gives #error on archs which includes the header file without
  actually having CPU_IDLE configured. To make it work in .h, we need one more
  #ifdef around that code which makes it messy.
* Also, the function is only called from one file. So, it can be in declared
  statically in .c rather than making it available to everyone who includes
  the .h file.

This should also be set if the arch provides compatibility A.OUT support for

Christoph Lameter 1f84260c8c SLUB: Alternate fast paths using cmpxchg_local
Provide an alternate implementation of the SLUB fast paths for alloc
and free using cmpxchg_local. The cmpxchg_local fast path is selected
for arches that have CONFIG_FAST_CMPXCHG_LOCAL set. An arch should only
set CONFIG_FAST_CMPXCHG_LOCAL if the cmpxchg_local is faster than an
interrupt enable/disable sequence. This is known to be true for both
x86 platforms so set FAST_CMPXCHG_LOCAL for both arches.

Currently another requirement for the fastpath is that the kernel is
compiled without preemption. The restriction will go away with the
introduction of a new per cpu allocator and new per cpu operations.

The advantages of a cmpxchg_local based fast path are:

1. Potentially lower cycle count (30%-60% faster)

2. There is no need to disable and enable interrupts on the fast path.
   Currently interrupts have to be disabled and enabled on every
   slab operation. This is likely avoiding a significant percentage
   of interrupt off / on sequences in the kernel.

3. The disposal of freed slabs can occur with interrupts enabled.

The alternate path is realized using #ifdef's. Several attempts to do the
same with macros and inline functions resulted in a mess (in particular due
to the strange way that local_interrupt_save() handles its argument and due
to the need to define macros/functions that sometimes disable interrupts
and sometimes do something else).

Mathieu Desnoyers 3f550096de Add HAVE_KPROBES
Linus:

On the per-architecture side, I do think it would be better to *not* have
internal architecture knowledge in a generic file, and as such a line like

        depends on X86_32 || IA64 || PPC || S390 || SPARC64 || X86_64 || AVR32

really shouldn't exist in a file like kernel/Kconfig.instrumentation.

It would be much better to do

        depends on ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES

in that generic file, and then architectures that do support it would just
have a

        bool ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES
                default y

in *their* architecture files. That would seem to be much more logical,
and is readable both for arch maintainers *and* for people who have no
clue - and don't care - about which architecture is supposed to support
which interface...

Changelog:

Actually, I know I gave this as the magic incantation, but now that I see
it, I realize that I should have told you to just use

        config KPROBES_SUPPORT
                def_bool y

Nick Piggin 314cdbefd1 x86: FIFO ticket spinlocks
Introduce ticket lock spinlocks for x86 which are FIFO. The implementation
is described in the comments. The straight-line lock/unlock instruction
sequence is slightly slower than the dec based locks on modern x86 CPUs,
however the difference is quite small on Core2 and Opteron when working out of
cache, and becomes almost insignificant even on P4 when the lock misses cache.
trylock is more significantly slower, but they are relatively rare.

On an 8 core (2 socket) Opteron, spinlock unfairness is extremely noticable,
with a userspace test having a difference of up to 2x runtime per thread, and
some threads are starved or "unfairly" granted the lock up to 1 000 000 (!)
times. After this patch, all threads appear to finish at exactly the same
time.

The memory ordering of the lock does conform to x86 standards, and the
implementation has been reviewed by Intel and AMD engineers.

The algorithm also tells us how many CPUs are contending the lock, so
lockbreak becomes trivial and we no longer have to waste 4 bytes per
spinlock for it.

After this, we can no longer spin on any locks with preempt enabled
and cannot reenable interrupts when spinning on an irq safe lock, because
at that point we have already taken a ticket and the would deadlock if
the same CPU tries to take the lock again. These are questionable anyway:
if the lock happens to be called under a preempt or interrupt disabled section,
then it will just have the same latency problems. The real fix is to keep
critical sections short, and ensure locks are reasonably fair (which this
patch does).

Nick Piggin 95c354fe9f spinlock: lockbreak cleanup
The break_lock data structure and code for spinlocks is quite nasty.
Not only does it double the size of a spinlock but it changes locking to
a potentially less optimal trylock.

Put all of that under CONFIG_GENERIC_LOCKBREAK, and introduce a
__raw_spin_is_contended that uses the lock data itself to determine whether
there are waiters on the lock, to be used if CONFIG_GENERIC_LOCKBREAK is
not set.

Rename need_lockbreak to spin_needbreak, make it use spin_is_contended to
decouple it from the spinlock implementation, and make it typesafe (rwlocks
do not have any need_lockbreak sites -- why do they even get bloated up
with that break_lock then?).

Huang, Ying 5b83683f32 x86: EFI runtime service support
This patch adds basic runtime services support for EFI x86_64 system. The
main file of the patch is the addition of efi_64.c for x86_64. This file is
modeled after the EFI IA32 avatar. EFI runtime services initialization are
implemented in efi_64.c. Some x86_64 specifics are worth noting here. On
x86_64, parameters passed to EFI firmware services need to follow the EFI
calling convention. For this purpose, a set of functions named efi_call<x>
(<x> is the number of parameters) are implemented. EFI function calls are
wrapped before calling the firmware service. The duplicated code between
efi_32.c and efi_64.c is placed in efi.c to remove them from efi_32.c.

Use sparsemem as the only memory model for UP, SMP and NUMA. Measurements

Roland McGrath af65d64845 x86 vDSO: consolidate vdso32
This makes x86_64's ia32 emulation support share the sources used in the
32-bit kernel for the 32-bit vDSO and much of its setup code.

The 32-bit vDSO mapping now behaves the same on x86_64 as on native 32-bit.
The abi.syscall32 sysctl on x86_64 now takes the same values that
vm.vdso_enabled takes on the 32-bit kernel. That is, 1 means a randomized
vDSO location, 2 means the fixed old address. The CONFIG_COMPAT_VDSO
option is now available to make this the default setting, the same meaning
it has for the 32-bit kernel. (This does not affect the 64-bit vDSO.)

The argument vdso32=[012] can be used on both 32-bit and 64-bit kernels to
set this paramter at boot time. The vdso=[012] argument still does this
same thing on the 32-bit kernel.

2.6.23 status quo.

Sam Ravnborg 6840999b19 x86: simplify "make ARCH=x86" and fix kconfig all.config
Simplify "make ARCH=x86" and fix kconfig so we again can set 64BIT in
all.config.

For a fix the diffstat is nice:
 6 files changed, 3 insertions(+), 36 deletions(-)

The patch reverts these commits:
 - 0f855aa64b ("kconfig: add helper to set
   config symbol from environment variable")
 - 2a113281f5 ("kconfig: use $K64BIT to
   set 64BIT with all*config targets")

Roman Zippel pointed out that kconfig supported string compares so
the additional complexity introduced by the above two patches were
not needed.

With this patch we have following behaviour:

  # make {allno,allyes,allmod,rand}config [ARCH=...]
  option \ host arch      | 32bit         | 64bit
  =====================================================
  ./.                     | 32bit         | 64bit
  ARCH=x86                | 32bit         | 32bit
  ARCH=i386               | 32bit         | 32bit
  ARCH=x86_64             | 64bit         | 64bit

The general rule are that ARCH= and native architecture takes
precedence over the configuration.

So make ARCH=i386 [whatever] will always build a 32-bit kernel
no matter what the configuration says. The configuration will
be updated to 32-bit if it was configured to 64-bit and the
other way around.

This behaviour is consistent with previous behaviour so no
suprises here.

make ARCH=x86 will per default result in a 32-bit kernel but as
the only ARCH= value x86 allow the user to select between 32-bit
and 64-bit using menuconfig.

Sam Ravnborg daa93fab82 x86: enable "make ARCH=x86"
After unification of the Kconfig files and
introducing K64BIT support in kconfig
it required only trivial changes to enable
"make ARCH=x86".

With this patch you can build for x86_64 in several ways:
1) make ARCH=x86_64
2) make ARCH=x86 K64BIT=y
3) make ARCH=x86 menuconfig
   => select 64-bit

Likewise for i386 with the addition that
i386 is default is you say ARCH=x86.

Sam Ravnborg e279b6c1d3 x86: start unification of arch/x86/Kconfig.*
This step introduces the file arch/x86/Kconfig
which contains all the menu's from "Power Management"
and below.

The main part of the new Kconfig file is shared
and the remaining i386/x86_64 specific symbols
are covered by dependencies.

A x86_64 allmodconfig build did not show any differences.
