Currently the offb module will use the PCI VGA device as frame
buffer device without calling something like pci_enable_device().
However, this would cause some problem if we disable memory
decoding of the upstream bridge before. When the console driver
issued memory access to the VGA device, the access cannot be
supported by the bridge which will cause EEH error on Power machine.

Substitute home-brewed memory management for framebuffer memory with what
core mm provide us: vmalloc_32_user() and remap_vmalloc_range()
The former is designed to allocate virtually contiguous area which is
32bit addressable and zeroed so it can be mapped to userspace without
leaking data. The latter does the similar job to remap_pfn_range() but
additionally validate vmalloc'ed area and it's size.

The amba-clcd-versatile.c code is always built-in and has to
be done that way because it gets called by platform code that is
also built-in. However, it now also gets called from the
core CLCD driver through the .init_panel callback function,
which leads to a build error when the framebuffer is configured
as a loadable module:
ERROR: "versatile_clcd_init_panel" [drivers/video/fbdev/amba-clcd-mod.ko] undefined!
The same thing happens for the nomadik driver, although that
could be linked into the core module if we want to:
ERROR: "nomadik_clcd_init_panel" [drivers/video/fbdev/amba-clcd.ko] undefined!
ERROR: "nomadik_clcd_init_board" [drivers/video/fbdev/amba-clcd.ko] undefined!
For consistency, I'm taking the same approach in both cases here
and just export the functions to make them usable by the driver.
Alternatively, we could split out the CONFIG_OF-code from amba-clcd-versatile.c
into a new file and link those two together with the core driver as one
module.

When using efifb with a 16-bit (5:6:5) visual, fbcon's text is rendered
in the wrong colors - e.g. text gray (#aaaaaa) is rendered as green
(#50bc50) and neighboring pixels have slightly different values
(such as #50bc78).
The reason is that fbcon loads its 16 color palette through
efifb_setcolreg(), which in turn calculates a 32-bit value to write
into memory for each palette index.
Until now, this code could only handle 8-bit visuals and didn't mask
overlapping values when ORing them.

In the .board_init() callback will set up a mux register in
the Nomadik system controller. It so happens that the platform
has two display output engines, and we have to poke a bit in
a special register to make sure the right engine is muxed in
as they are mutually exclusive.
The Nomadik CLCD variant is instantiated on a platform where
it is combined with a 800x480 TPO WVGA display. In the
.panel_init() hook we will detect this display from the
compatible string and set it up. We also add .enable() and
.disable() callbacks for it as the sleep state is software
controlled.
The display is connected with a special 3-wire serial bus
(this is sadly neither I2C or SPI) using three GPIO lines that
we bitbang to detect the display and enable/disable sleep
state.

The Nomadik variant has a few special quirks that need to be respected
to make the driver work:
- The block need to be clocked during writing of the TIMn registers
or the bus will stall.
- Special bits in the control register select how many of the output
display lines get activated.
- Special bits in the control register select how to manage the
different 565 and 5551 modes.
- There is a packed 24bit graphics mode, i.e 888 pixels can be stored
in memory is three consecutive bytes, not evenly aligned to a 32bit
word.
This patch uses the vendor data pointer from the AMBA matching mechanism
to track the quirks for this variant, and adds two hooks that variants
can use to initialize boards and panels during start-up. These will
later be used to adopt a Nomadik board profile.

The device tree bindings from display-timing.txt allows us to
specify if data enable, hsync, vsync or the pixed clock should be
inverted on the way to the display. The driver does not currently
handle this so add support for those flags as it is needed for
the Versatile Sanyo LCD display.
Note that the previous behaviour was to invert the pixel clock
for all displays, so unless the pixel clock polarity is
explicitly defined in the device tree (i.e. the timings node
has the "pixelclk-active" property) we fall back to inverting
the pixel clock. This needs some extra compatibility code.
Since the timing flags have to be set up inside the struct
clcd_panel, we need to refactor the code a bit to pass around
the panel rather than just the mode.

The voltage changing code in this driver is broken and should be
removed. The driver sets a single, exact voltage on probe. Unless
there is a very good reason for this (which should be documented in
comments) constraints like this need to be set via the machine
constraints, voltage setting in a driver is expected to be used in cases
where the voltage varies at runtime.
In addition client drivers should almost never be calling
regulator_can_set_voltage(), if the device needs to set a voltage it
needs to set the voltage and the regulator core will handle the case
where the regulator is fixed voltage. If the driver can skip setting
the voltage it should just never set the voltage.

The dma-mapping core and the implementations do not change the DMA
attributes passed by pointer. Thus the pointer can point to const data.
However the attributes do not have to be a bitfield. Instead unsigned
long will do fine:
1. This is just simpler. Both in terms of reading the code and setting
attributes. Instead of initializing local attributes on the stack
and passing pointer to it to dma_set_attr(), just set the bits.
2. It brings safeness and checking for const correctness because the
attributes are passed by value.

When building with "make W=1", we get a warning about an empty stub
function that does nothing but reassign its one of its arguments:
drivers/video/fbdev/core/fbmon.c: In function 'fb_edid_to_monspecs':
drivers/video/fbdev/core/fbmon.c:1497:67: error: parameter 'specs' set but not used [-Werror=unused-but-set-parameter]
We can simply make that function completely empty to avoid the warning.
This prevents a warning which everyone will see after "CFLAGS: add

The LP8556 datasheet describes an EN/VDDIO input, which serves "both as
a chip enable and as a power supply reference for PWM, SDA, and SCL
inputs." The LP8556 that I'm testing doesn't respond properly if I try
to talk I2C to it too quickly after enabling VDDIO, and the LP8555
datasheet mentions a t_RESPONSE delay of up to 1 millisecond.
Support this EN/VDDIO by adding a regulator property to the binding;
enabling this regulator at probe time; and sleeping for 1 to 2ms, if the
EN/VDDIO regulator was provided.

The DDC scl high and low times were set to the minimum values
from the i2c specification, but the i2c specification takes into
account the rise time and fall time to calculate the frequency.
To pass HDMI certification DDC can not exceed 100kHz therefore in
a system where the rise times and fall times are negligible the high
and low times for scl need to be 10us.

Most users of IS_ERR_VALUE() in the kernel are wrong, as they
pass an 'int' into a function that takes an 'unsigned long'
argument. This happens to work because the type is sign-extended
on 64-bit architectures before it gets converted into an
unsigned type.
However, anything that passes an 'unsigned short' or 'unsigned int'
argument into IS_ERR_VALUE() is guaranteed to be broken, as are
8-bit integers and types that are wider than 'unsigned long'.
Andrzej Hajda has already fixed a lot of the worst abusers that
were causing actual bugs, but it would be nice to prevent any
users that are not passing 'unsigned long' arguments.
This patch changes all users of IS_ERR_VALUE() that I could find
on 32-bit ARM randconfig builds and x86 allmodconfig. For the
moment, this doesn't change the definition of IS_ERR_VALUE()
because there are probably still architecture specific users
elsewhere.
Almost all the warnings I got are for files that are better off
using 'if (err)' or 'if (err < 0)'.
The only legitimate user I could find that we get a warning for
is the (32-bit only) freescale fman driver, so I did not remove
the IS_ERR_VALUE() there but changed the type to 'unsigned long'.
For 9pfs, I just worked around one user whose calling conventions
are so obscure that I did not dare change the behavior.
I was using this definition for testing:
#define IS_ERR_VALUE(x) ((unsigned long*)NULL == (typeof (x)*)NULL && \
unlikely((unsigned long long)(x) >= (unsigned long long)(typeof(x))-MAX_ERRNO))
which ends up making all 16-bit or wider types work correctly with
the most plausible interpretation of what IS_ERR_VALUE() was supposed
to return according to its users, but also causes a compile-time
warning for any users that do not pass an 'unsigned long' argument.
I suggested this approach earlier this year, but back then we ended
up deciding to just fix the users that are obviously broken. After
the initial warning that caused me to get involved in the discussion
(fs/gfs2/dir.c) showed up again in the mainline kernel, Linus
asked me to send the whole thing again.

This set of changes introduces an atomic API to the PWM subsystem. This
is influenced by the DRM atomic API that was introduced a while back,
though it is obviously a lot simpler. The fundamental idea remains the
same, though: drivers provide a single callback to implement the atomic
configuration of a PWM channel.
As a side-effect the PWM subsystem gains the ability for initial state
retrieval, so that the logical state mirrors that of the hardware. Many
use-cases don't care about this, but for others it is essential.
These new features require changes in all users, which these patches
take care of. The core is transitioned to use the atomic callback if
available and provides a fallback mechanism for other drivers.
Changes to transition users and drivers to the atomic API are postponed
to v4.8.

The PWM framework has clarified the concept of reference PWM config (the
platform dependent config retrieved from the DT or the PWM lookup table)
and real PWM state.
Use pwm_get_args() when the PWM user wants to retrieve this reference
config and not the current state.
This is part of the rework allowing the PWM framework to support
hardware readout and expose real PWM state even when the PWM has just
been requested (before the user calls pwm_config/enable/disable()).

Export fb_deferred_io_mmap so drivers can change vma->vm_page_prot.
When the framebuffer memory is allocated using dma_alloc_writecombine()
instead of vmalloc(), I get cache syncing problems on ARM.
This solves it:
static int drm_fbdev_cma_deferred_io_mmap(struct fb_info *info,
struct vm_area_struct *vma)
{
fb_deferred_io_mmap(info, vma);
vma->vm_page_prot = pgprot_writecombine(vma->vm_page_prot);
return 0;
}
Could this have been done in the core?
Drivers that don't set (struct fb_ops *)->fb_mmap, gets a call to
fb_pgprotect() at the end of the default fb_mmap implementation
(drivers/video/fbdev/core/fbmem.c). This is an architecture specific
function that on many platforms uses pgprot_writecombine(), but not on
all. And looking at some of the fb_mmap implementations, some of them
sets vm_page_prot to nocache for instance, so I think the safest bet is
to do this in the driver and not in the fbdev core. And we can't call
fb_pgprotect() from fb_deferred_io_mmap() either because we don't have
access to the file pointer that powerpc needs.

PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time
ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page
cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE.
This promise never materialized. And unlikely will.
We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to
PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether
PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case,
especially on the border between fs and mm.
Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much
breakage to be doable.
Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are
not.
The changes are pretty straight-forward:
- <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>;
- <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>;
- PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN};
- page_cache_get() -> get_page();
- page_cache_release() -> put_page();
This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using
script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files.
I've called spatch for them manually.
The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to
PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later.
There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll
fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also
will be addressed with the separate patch.

Pull x86 protection key support from Ingo Molnar:
"This tree adds support for a new memory protection hardware feature
that is available in upcoming Intel CPUs: 'protection keys' (pkeys).
There's a background article at LWN.net:
https://lwn.net/Articles/643797/
The gist is that protection keys allow the encoding of
user-controllable permission masks in the pte. So instead of having a
fixed protection mask in the pte (which needs a system call to change
and works on a per page basis), the user can map a (handful of)
protection mask variants and can change the masks runtime relatively
cheaply, without having to change every single page in the affected
virtual memory range.
This allows the dynamic switching of the protection bits of large
amounts of virtual memory, via user-space instructions. It also
allows more precise control of MMU permission bits: for example the
executable bit is separate from the read bit (see more about that
below).
This tree adds the MM infrastructure and low level x86 glue needed for
that, plus it adds a high level API to make use of protection keys -
if a user-space application calls:
mmap(..., PROT_EXEC);
or
mprotect(ptr, sz, PROT_EXEC);
(note PROT_EXEC-only, without PROT_READ/WRITE), the kernel will notice
this special case, and will set a special protection key on this
memory range. It also sets the appropriate bits in the Protection
Keys User Rights (PKRU) register so that the memory becomes unreadable
and unwritable.
So using protection keys the kernel is able to implement 'true'
PROT_EXEC on x86 CPUs: without protection keys PROT_EXEC implies
PROT_READ as well. Unreadable executable mappings have security
advantages: they cannot be read via information leaks to figure out
ASLR details, nor can they be scanned for ROP gadgets - and they
cannot be used by exploits for data purposes either.
We know about no user-space code that relies on pure PROT_EXEC
mappings today, but binary loaders could start making use of this new
feature to map binaries and libraries in a more secure fashion.
There is other pending pkeys work that offers more high level system
call APIs to manage protection keys - but those are not part of this
pull request.
Right now there's a Kconfig that controls this feature
(CONFIG_X86_INTEL_MEMORY_PROTECTION_KEYS) that is default enabled
(like most x86 CPU feature enablement code that has no runtime
overhead), but it's not user-configurable at the moment. If there's
any serious problem with this then we can make it configurable and/or
flip the default"

Core changes:
- The gpio_chip is now a *real device*. Until now the gpio chips
were just piggybacking the parent device or (gasp) floating in
space outside of the device model. We now finally make GPIO chips
devices. The gpio_chip will create a gpio_device which contains
a struct device, and this gpio_device struct is kept private.
Anything that needs to be kept private from the rest of the kernel
will gradually be moved over to the gpio_device.
- As a result of making the gpio_device a real device, we have added
resource management, so devm_gpiochip_add_data() will cut down on
overhead and reduce code lines. A huge slew of patches convert
almost all drivers in the subsystem to use this.
- Building on making the GPIO a real device, we add the first step
of a new userspace ABI: the GPIO character device. We take small
steps here, so we first add a pure *information* ABI and the tool
"lsgpio" that will list all GPIO devices on the system and all
lines on these devices. We can now discover GPIOs properly from
userspace. We still have not come up with a way to actually *use*
GPIOs from userspace.
- To encourage people to use the character device for the future,
we have it always-enabled when using GPIO. The old sysfs ABI is
still opt-in (and can be used in parallel), but is marked as
deprecated. We will keep it around for the foreseeable future,
but it will not be extended to cover ever more use cases.
Cleanup:
- Bjorn Helgaas removed a whole slew of per-architecture <asm/gpio.h>
includes. This dates back to when GPIO was an opt-in feature and
no shared library even existed: just a header file with proper
prototypes was provided and all semantics were up to the arch to
implement. These patches make the GPIO chip even more a proper
device and cleans out leftovers of the old in-kernel API here
and there. Still some cruft is left but it's very little now.
- There is still some clamping of return values for .get() going
on, but we now return sane values in the vast majority of drivers
and the errorpath is sanitized. Some patches for powerpc, blackfin
and unicore still drop in.
- We continue to switch the ARM, MIPS, blackfin, m68k local GPIO
implementations to use gpiochip_add_data() and cut down on code
lines.
- MPC8xxx is converted to use the generic GPIO helpers.
- ATH79 is converted to use the generic GPIO helpers.

The Xen framebuffer driver selects the xen keyboard driver, so the latter
will be built-in if XEN_FBDEV_FRONTEND=y. However, when CONFIG_INPUT
is a loadable module, this configuration cannot work. On mainline kernels,
the symbol will be enabled but not used, while in combination with
a patch I have to detect such useless configurations, we get the
expected link failure:
drivers/input/built-in.o: In function `xenkbd_remove':
xen-kbdfront.c:(.text+0x2f0): undefined reference to `input_unregister_device'
xen-kbdfront.c:(.text+0x30e): undefined reference to `input_unregister_device'
This removes the extra "select", as it just causes more trouble than
it helps. In theory, some defconfig file might break if it has
XEN_FBDEV_FRONTEND in it but not INPUT_XEN_KBDDEV_FRONTEND. The Kconfig
fragment we ship in the kernel (kernel/configs/xen.config) however
already enables both, and anyone using an old .config file would
keep having both enabled.

Rename dma_*_writecombine() to dma_*_wc(), so that the naming
is coherent across the various write-combining APIs. Keep the
old names for compatibility for a while, these can be removed
at a later time. A guard is left to enable backporting of the
rename, and later remove of the old mapping defines seemlessly.
Build tested successfully with allmodconfig.

transformation:

omapdrm and omapfb still share the same include/video/omapdss.h. We need
to change that so that we can proceed with omapdrm work.
However, it's not trivial to make separate omapfb and omapdrm versions
of omapdss.h, as that file is also included in other places like arch
code, audio code and omap_vout code. So we'll do it piece by piece.
This patch makes private versions of all the dispc function declarations
that are in omapdss.h. For omapdrm we create a new file,
drivers/gpu/drm/omapdrm/dss/omapdss.h, which will contain headers meant
to be visible outside omapdss.

...meaning that it currently is not being built as a module by anyone.
Lets remove the modular code that is essentially orphaned, so that
when reading the driver there is no doubt it is builtin-only.
Since module_init translates to device_initcall in the non-modular

We explicitly disallow a driver unbind, since that doesn't have a

The s6e8ax0 driver has a dependency on BACKLIGHT_CLASS_DEVICE,
which can be configured as a loadable module, so we have to
make the driver a tristate symbol as well, to avoid this error:
drivers/built-in.o: In function `s6e8ax0_probe':
:(.text+0x23a48): undefined reference to `devm_backlight_device_register'
This also means we get another error from a missing export, which
this fixes as well:
ERROR: "exynos_mipi_dsi_register_lcd_driver" [drivers/video/fbdev/exynos/s6e8ax0.ko] undefined!
The drivers are all written to be loadable modules already,
except the Kconfig options for that are missing, which makes
the patch really easy.
Finally, the EXYNOS_VIDEO option is turned into tristate as well
for good measure, as all framebuffer drivers should be configurable
as modules, though this change is not strictly necessary.

Since commit 27a4c827c3
fbcon: use the cursor blink interval provided by vt
two attempts have been made at fixing a possible hang caused by
cursor_timer_handler. That function registers a timer to be triggered at
"jiffies + fbcon_ops.cur_blink_jiffies".
A new case had been encountered during initialisation of clcd-pl11x:
fbcon_fb_registered
do_fbcon_takeover
-> do_register_con_driver
fbcon_startup
(A) add_cursor_timer (with cur_blink_jiffies = 0)
-> do_bind_con_driver
visual_init
fbcon_init
(B) cur_blink_jiffies = msecs_to_jiffies(vc->vc_cur_blink_ms);
If we take an softirq anywhere between A and B (and we do),
cursor_timer_handler executes indefinitely.
Instead of patching all possible paths that lead to this case one at a
time, fix the issue at the source and initialise cur_blink_jiffies to
200ms when allocating fbcon_ops. This was its default value before
aforesaid commit. fbcon_cursor or fbcon_init will refine this value
downstream.

The Bt455 is a greyscale RAMDAC, using the green color palette entries
only while still providing registers for the red and blue components,
all the three of which have to be loaded on palette updates. Chip
documentation [1] mandates that the unused red and blue registers are
written with 0.
Therefore update code to follow this requirement and given that it makes
the red and blue components unusable remove them from internal API calls
altogether.

Rework the driver to use the current frambuffer and TURBOchannel APIs,
including proper resource management and using the new framework for
hardware cursor support.
NB two Bt431 cursor generators are included onboard, both responding at
the same TURBOchannel bus addresses and with their host data buses wired
to byte lanes #0 and #1 respectively of the 32-bit bus. Therefore both
can be accessed simultaneously with 16-bit data transfers. Cursor
outputs of the chip wired to lane #0 drive the respective overlay select
inputs of the Bt455 RAMDAC, whereas cursor outputs of the chip wired to
lane #1 drive the respective P3 pixel select inputs of the RAMDAC.
So 5 (out of 17) Bt455 color registers are usable with this board:
palette entries #0 and #1 for frame buffer pixel data driven while
neither cursor generator is active, palette entries #8 and #9 for frame
buffer pixel data driven while cursor generator #1 is active only and
the overlay entry while cursor generator #0 is active.

Most arches have an asm/gpio.h that merely includes linux/gpio.h. The
others select ARCH_HAVE_CUSTOM_GPIO_H, and when that's selected,
linux/gpio.h includes asm/gpio.h.
Therefore, code should include linux/gpio.h instead of including asm/gpio.h
directly.
Remove includes of asm/gpio.h, adding an include of linux/gpio.h when

Currently when we boot the kernel on a mx25pdk the LCDC controller
does not show the Linux logo on boot.
This problem is well explained by Sascha Hauer:
"Unfortunately this LCD controller does not have an enable bit. The
controller starts directly when the clocks are enabled. If the clocks
are enabled when the controller is not yet programmed with proper
register values then it just goes into some undefined state. What I
suspect is that the clocks already were enabled before driver probe,
presumably by the bootloader, so the controller is already in undefined
state when entering Linux. Now by dis/enabling the ipg clock you
effectively reset the controller. Since you have programmed it with
valid register values in the mean time it starts working after this
reset."
So do as suggested and force a reset of the LCDC hardware by
enabling and disabling the IPG clock.
With this change the Linux logo can be seen on boot on a mx25pdk.

Infrastructural changes:
- In struct gpio_chip, rename the .dev node to .parent to better reflect
the fact that this is not the GPIO struct device abstraction. We will
add that soon so this would be totallt confusing.
- It was noted that the driver .get_value() callbacks was
sometimes reporting negative -ERR values to the gpiolib core, expecting
them to be propagated to consumer gpiod_get_value() and gpio_get_value()
calls. This was not happening, so as there was a mess of drivers
returning negative errors and some returning "anything else than zero"
to indicate that a line was active. As some would have bit 31 set to
indicate "line active" it clashed with negative error codes. This is
fixed by the largeish series clamping values in all drivers with
!!value to [0,1] and then augmenting the code to propagate error codes
to consumers. (Includes some ACKed patches in other subsystems.)
- Add a void *data pointer to struct gpio_chip. The container_of() design
pattern is indeed very nice, but we want to reform the struct gpio_chip
to be a non-volative, stateless business, and keep states internal to
the gpiolib to be able to hold on to the state when adding a proper
userspace ABI (character device) further down the road. To achieve this,
drivers need a handle at the internal state that is not dependent on
their struct gpio_chip() so we add gpiochip_add_data() and
gpiochip_get_data() following the pattern of many other subsystems.
All the "use gpiochip data pointer" patches transforms drivers to this
scheme.
- The Generic GPIO chip header has been merged into the general
<linux/gpio/driver.h> header, and the custom header for that removed.
Instead of having a separate mm_gpio_chip struct for these generic
drivers, merge that into struct gpio_chip, simplifying the code and
removing the need for separate and confusing includes.
Misc improvements:
- Stabilize the way GPIOs are looked up from the ACPI legacy
specification.
- Incremental driver features for PXA, PCA953X, Lantiq (patches from the
OpenWRT community), RCAR, Zynq, PL061, 104-idi-48
New drivers:
- Add a GPIO chip to the ALSA SoC AC97 driver.
- Add a new Broadcom NSP SoC driver (this lands in the pinctrl dir, but
the branch is merged here too to account for infrastructural changes).
- The sx150x driver now supports the sx1502.

Pull GPIO updates from Linus Walleij:
"Here is the bulk of GPIO changes for v4.5.
Notably there are big refactorings mostly by myself, aimed at getting
the gpio_chip into a shape that makes me believe I can proceed to
preserve state for a proper userspace ABI (character device) that has
already been proposed once, but resulted in the feedback that I need
to go back and restructure stuff. So I've been restructuring stuff.
On the way I ran into brokenness (return code from the get_value()
callback) and had to fix it. Also, refactored generic GPIO to be
simpler.
Some of that is still waiting to trickle down from the subsystems all
over the kernel that provide random gpio_chips, I've touched every
single GPIO driver in the kernel now, oh man I didn't know I was
responsible for so much...
Apart from that we're churning along as usual.
I took some effort to test and retest so it should merge nicely and we
shook out a couple of bugs in -next.

A recent patch I did fixed two potential uses of uninitialized
variables in the adp8870 and adp8860 drivers. Unfortunately,
I missed another one:
drivers/video/backlight/adp8860_bl.c: In function 'adp8860_bl_ambient_light_level_show':
drivers/video/backlight/adp8860_bl.c:570:11: warning: 'reg_val' may be used uninitialized in this function
This does the same change as before in one additional function,
and also changes the check for the return value in a way that
avoids another false positive warning with a similar message.

There are situations where the backlight should be on at boot time
(e.g. if the boot loader already turned the display on). The DT
bindings specify the "default-on" property for that purpose.
Currently, the initial state of the GPIO at request time is always
set to logical off (high or low depending on whether it is an
active high or low GPIO). Since the GPIO is requested as an output,
the GPIO will be driven low for a short period of time, which leads
to a flickering display in the above use-case.
Initialize the GPIO depending on the default-on property to be
logical on or off.

Commit ee65ad0e2a9e ("backlight: pwm_bl: Avoid backlight flicker when
probed from DT") tries to dereference the device of_node pointer
unconditionally, causing a NULL pointer dereference on non-dt platforms.
Fix it by replacing the phandle variable with a node variable and
by checking that for NULL before dereferencing it.
