Colin Ian King 28f459a0a4 xprtrdma: fix incorrect header size calculations
ANBZ: #2308

commit 4103bc54d8684a099615ae1fbab0590cf2167024 upstream.

commit 912288442c upstream.

Currently the header size calculations are using an assignment
operator instead of a += operator when accumulating the header
size leading to incorrect sizes. Fix this by using the correct
operator.

NeilBrown 1622345d16 SUNRPC in case of backlog, hand free slots directly to waiting task
ANBZ: #816

commit e877a88d1f upstream.

If sunrpc.tcp_max_slot_table_entries is small and there are tasks
on the backlog queue, then when a request completes it is freed and the
first task on the queue is woken. The expectation is that it will wake
and claim that request. However if it was a sync task and the waiting
process was killed at just that moment, it will wake and NOT claim the
request.

As long as TASK_CONGESTED remains set, requests can only be claimed by
tasks woken from the backlog, and they are woken only as requests are
freed, so when a task doesn't claim a request, no other task can ever
get that request until TASK_CONGESTED is cleared. Each time this
happens the number of available requests is decreased by one.

With a sufficiently high workload and sufficiently low setting of
max_slot (16 in the case where this was seen), TASK_CONGESTED can remain
set for an extended period, and the above scenario (of a process being
killed just as its task was woken) can repeat until no requests can be
allocated. Then traffic stops.

This patch addresses the problem by introducing a positive handover of a
request from a completing task to a backlog task - the request is never
freed when there is a backlog.

When a task is woken it might not already have a request attached in
which case it is *not* freed (as with current code) but is initialised
(if needed) and used. If it isn't used it will eventually be freed by
rpc_exit_task(). xprt_release() is enhanced to be able to correctly
release an uninitialised request.

Currently rpcbind client is created without setting rpc timeout (thus
using the default value). But if the rpc_task already has a customized

Let's use the same timeout setting in rpc_task->tk_client->cl_timeout

Yihao Wu a10b7c4041 SUNRPC/cache: Fix unsafe traverse caused double-free in cache_purge
fix #25707555

commit 43e33924c3 linux-next

Deleting list entry within hlist_for_each_entry_safe is not safe unless
next pointer (tmp) is protected too. It's not, because once hash_lock
is released, cache_clean may delete the entry that tmp points to. Then
cache_purge can walk to a deleted entry and tries to double free it.

Fix this bug by holding only the deleted entry's reference.

David Howells c8b49a3879 iov_iter: Separate type from direction and use accessor functions
commit aa563d7bca upstream.

In the iov_iter struct, separate the iterator type from the iterator
direction and use accessor functions to access them in most places.

Convert a bunch of places to use switch-statements to access them rather
then chains of bitwise-AND statements. This makes it easier to add further
iterator types. Also, this can be more efficient as to implement a switch
of small contiguous integers, the compiler can use ~50% fewer compare
instructions than it has to use bitwise-and instructions.

Further, cease passing the iterator type into the iterator setup function.
The iterator function can set that itself. Only the direction is required.

Pavel Tikhomirov 67256225ec sunrpc: fix crash when cache_head become valid before update
[ Upstream commit 5fcaf6982d ]

I was investigating a crash in our Virtuozzo7 kernel which happened in
in svcauth_unix_set_client. I found out that we access m_client field
in ip_map structure, which was received from sunrpc_cache_lookup (we
have a bit older kernel, now the code is in sunrpc_cache_add_entry), and
these field looks uninitialized (m_client == 0x74 don't look like a
pointer) but in the cache_head in flags we see 0x1 which is CACHE_VALID.

It looks like the problem appeared from our previous fix to sunrpc (1):
commit 4ecd55ea07 ("sunrpc: fix cache_head leak due to queued
request")

And we've also found a patch already fixing our patch (2):
commit d58431eacb ("sunrpc: don't mark uninitialised items as VALID.")

Though the crash is eliminated, I think the core of the problem is not
completely fixed:

Neil in the patch (2) makes cache_head CACHE_NEGATIVE, before
cache_fresh_locked which was added in (1) to fix crash. These way
cache_is_valid won't say the cache is valid anymore and in
svcauth_unix_set_client the function cache_check will return error
instead of 0, and we don't count entry as initialized.

But it looks like we need to remove cache_fresh_locked completely in
sunrpc_cache_lookup:

In (1) we've only wanted to make cache_fresh_unlocked->cache_dequeue so
that cache_requests with no readers also release corresponding
cache_head, to fix their leak. We with Vasily were not sure if
cache_fresh_locked and cache_fresh_unlocked should be used in pair or
not, so we've guessed to use them in pair.

Now we see that we don't want the CACHE_VALID bit set here by
cache_fresh_locked, as "valid" means "initialized" and there is no
initialization in sunrpc_cache_add_entry. Both expiry_time and
last_refresh are not used in cache_fresh_unlocked code-path and also not
required for the initial fix.

So to conclude cache_fresh_locked was called by mistake, and we can just
safely remove it instead of crutching it with CACHE_NEGATIVE. It looks
ideologically better for me. Hope I don't miss something here.

Here is our crash backtrace:

If a reply has been processed but the RPC is later retransmitted

This problem seems to be worsened by the restructuring of the RPC

least a re-architecture of the disconnect logic, which is not

Commits ffb6ca33b0 and e08ea3a96f prevent setting xprt_min_resvport

one parameter then the other, if the new range does not overlap the old.

Also it looks racy to me, unless there's some serialization I'm not
seeing. Granted it would probably require malicious privileged processes
(unless there's a chance these might eventually be settable in unprivileged

Simpler seems to be to allow setting the parameters to whatever you want
but interpret xprt_min_resvport > xprt_max_resvport as the empty range.

Chuck Lever 80b25628ff svcrdma: Ignore source port when computing DRC hash
commit 1e091c3bbf upstream.

The DRC appears to be effectively empty after an RPC/RDMA transport
reconnect. The problem is that each connection uses a different
source port, which defeats the DRC hash.

Clients always have to disconnect before they send retransmissions
to reset the connection's credit accounting, thus every retransmit
on NFS/RDMA will miss the DRC.

An NFS/RDMA client's IP source port is meaningless for RDMA
transports. The transport layer typically sets the source port value
on the connection to a random ephemeral port. The server already
ignores it for the "secure port" check. See commit 16e4d93f6d
("NFSD: Ignore client's source port on RDMA transports").

The Linux NFS server's DRC resolves XID collisions from the same
source IP address by using the checksum of the first 200 bytes of
the RPC call header.

NeilBrown c0309570a5 sunrpc: don't mark uninitialised items as VALID.
commit d58431eacb upstream.

A recent commit added a call to cache_fresh_locked()
when an expired item was found.
The call sets the CACHE_VALID flag, so it is important
that the item actually is valid.
There are two ways it could be valid:
1/ If ->update has been called to fill in relevant content
2/ if CACHE_NEGATIVE is set, to say that content doesn't exist.

An expired item that is waiting for an update will be neither.
Setting CACHE_VALID will mean that a subsequent call to cache_put()
will be likely to dereference uninitialised pointers.

So we must make sure the item is valid, and we already have code to do
that in try_to_negate_entry(). This takes the hash lock and so cannot
be used directly, so take out the two lines that we need and use them.

Now cache_fresh_locked() is certain to be called only on
a valid item.

Chuck Lever 9b65b18f81 svcrdma: Remove max_sge check at connect time
commit e248aa7be8 upstream.

Two and a half years ago, the client was changed to use gathered
Send for larger inline messages, in commit 655fec6987 ("xprtrdma:
Use gathered Send for large inline messages"). Several fixes were
required because there are a few in-kernel device drivers whose
max_sge is 3, and these were broken by the change.

Apparently my memory is going, because some time later, I submitted
commit 25fd86eca1 ("svcrdma: Don't overrun the SGE array in
svc_rdma_send_ctxt"), and after that, commit f3c1fd0ee2 ("svcrdma:
Reduce max_send_sges"). These too incorrectly assumed in-kernel
device drivers would have more than a few Send SGEs available.

The fix for the server side is not the same. This is because the
fundamental problem on the server is that, whether or not the client
has provisioned a chunk for the RPC reply, the server must squeeze
even the most complex RPC replies into a single RDMA Send. Failing
in the send path because of Send SGE exhaustion should never be an
option.

Therefore, instead of failing when the send path runs out of SGEs,
switch to using a bounce buffer mechanism to handle RPC replies that
are too complex for the device to send directly. That allows us to
remove the max_sge check to enable drivers with small max_sge to
work again.

Benjamin Coddington 2440f3cebc SUNRPC: Always drop the XPRT_LOCK on XPRT_CLOSE_WAIT
This patch is only appropriate for stable kernels v4.16 - v4.19

Since commit 9b30889c54 ("SUNRPC: Ensure we always close the socket after
a connection shuts down"), and until commit c544577dad ("SUNRPC: Clean up
transport write space handling"), it is possible for the NFS client to spin
in the following tight loop:

269.964083: rpc_task_run_action: task:43@0 flags=5a81 state=0005 status=0 action=call_bind [sunrpc]
269.964083: rpc_task_run_action: task:43@0 flags=5a81 state=0005 status=0 action=call_connect [sunrpc]
269.964083: rpc_task_run_action: task:43@0 flags=5a81 state=0005 status=0 action=call_transmit [sunrpc]
269.964085: xprt_transmit: peer=[10.0.1.82]:2049 xid=0x761d3f77 status=-32
269.964085: rpc_task_run_action: task:43@0 flags=5a81 state=0005 status=-32 action=call_transmit_status [sunrpc]
269.964085: rpc_task_run_action: task:43@0 flags=5a81 state=0005 status=-32 action=call_status [sunrpc]
269.964085: rpc_call_status: task:43@0 status=-32

The issue is that the path through call_transmit_status does not release
the XPRT_LOCK when the transmit result is -EPIPE, so the socket cannot be
properly shut down.

The below commit fixed things up in mainline by unconditionally calling
xprt_end_transmit() and releasing the XPRT_LOCK after every pass through
call_transmit. However, the entirety of this commit is not appropriate for
stable kernels because its original inclusion was part of a series that
modifies the sunrpc code to use a different queueing model. As a result,
there are machinations within this patch that are not needed for a stable
fix and will not make sense without a larger backport of the mainline
series.

In this patch, we take the slightly modified bit of the mainline patch
below, which is to release the XPRT_LOCK on transmission error should we
detect that the transport is waiting to close.

Vasily Averin 44e7bab39f sunrpc: use-after-free in svc_process_common()
commit d4b09acf92 upstream.

if node have NFSv41+ mounts inside several net namespaces
it can lead to use-after-free in svc_process_common()

svc_process_common()
        /* Setup reply header */
        rqstp->rq_xprt->xpt_ops->xpo_prep_reply_hdr(rqstp); <<< HERE

svc_process_common() can use incorrect rqstp->rq_xprt,
its caller function bc_svc_process() takes it from serv->sv_bc_xprt.
The problem is that serv is global structure but sv_bc_xprt
is assigned per-netnamespace.

According to Trond, the whole "let's set up rqstp->rq_xprt
for the back channel" is nothing but a giant hack in order
to work around the fact that svc_process_common() uses it
to find the xpt_ops, and perform a couple of (meaningless
for the back channel) tests of xpt_flags.

All we really need in svc_process_common() is to be able to run
rqstp->rq_xprt->xpt_ops->xpo_prep_reply_hdr()

Bruce J Fields points that this xpo_prep_reply_hdr() call
is an awfully roundabout way just to do "svc_putnl(resv, 0);"
in the tcp case.

This patch does not initialiuze rqstp->rq_xprt in bc_svc_process(),
now it calls svc_process_common() with rqstp->rq_xprt = NULL.

To adjust reply header svc_process_common() just check
rqstp->rq_prot and calls svc_tcp_prep_reply_hdr() for tcp case.

To handle rqstp->rq_xprt = NULL case in functions called from
svc_process_common() patch intruduces net namespace pointer
svc_rqst->rq_bc_net and adjust SVC_NET() definition.
Some other function was also adopted to properly handle described case.

Vasily Averin 807957cecd sunrpc: fix cache_head leak due to queued request
commit 4ecd55ea07 upstream.

After commit d202cce896, an expired cache_head can be removed from the
cache_detail's hash.

However, the expired cache_head may be waiting for a reply from a
previously submitted request. Such a cache_head has an increased
refcounter and therefore it won't be freed after cache_put(freeme).

Because the cache_head was removed from the hash it cannot be found
during cache_clean() and can be leaked forever, together with stalled
cache_request and other taken resources.

In our case we noticed it because an entry in the export cache was
holding a reference on a filesystem.

Deepa Dinamani 60f05dddf1 sock: Make sock->sk_stamp thread-safe
[ Upstream commit 3a0ed3e961 ]

Al Viro mentioned (Message-ID
<20170626041334.GZ10672@ZenIV.linux.org.uk>)
that there is probably a race condition
lurking in accesses of sk_stamp on 32-bit machines.

sock->sk_stamp is of type ktime_t which is always an s64.
On a 32 bit architecture, we might run into situations of
unsafe access as the access to the field becomes non atomic.

Use seqlocks for synchronization.
This allows us to avoid using spinlocks for readers as
readers do not need mutual exclusion.

Another approach to solve this is to require sk_lock for all
modifications of the timestamps. The current approach allows
for timestamps to have their own lock: sk_stamp_lock.
This allows for the patch to not compete with already
existing critical sections, and side effects are limited
to the paths in the patch.

The addition of the new field maintains the data locality
optimizations from
commit 9115e8cd2a ("net: reorganize struct sock for better data
locality")

Note that all the instances of the sk_stamp accesses
are either through the ioctl or the syscall recvmsg.

On a fresh connection, an RPC/RDMA client is supposed to send only
one RPC Call until it gets a credit grant in the first RPC Reply
from the server [RFC 8166, Section 3.3.3].

There is a bug in the Linux client's credit accounting mechanism
introduced by commit e7ce710a88 ("xprtrdma: Avoid deadlock when
credit window is reset"). On connect, it simply dumps all pending
RPC Calls onto the new connection.

Servers have been tolerant of this bad behavior. Currently no server
implementation ever changes its credit grant over reconnects, and
servers always repost enough Receives before connections are fully
established.

To correct this issue, ensure that the client resets both the credit
grant _and_ the congestion window when handling a reconnect.

Chuck Lever 9abdda5dda sunrpc: Extract target name into svc_cred
NFSv4.0 callback needs to know the GSS target name the client used
when it established its lease. That information is available from
the GSS context created by gssproxy. Make it available in each
svc_cred.

Note this will also give us access to the real target service
principal name (which is typically "nfs", but spec does not require
that).

Chuck Lever a1a237775e sunrpc: Enable the kernel to specify the hostname part of service principals
A multi-homed NFS server may have more than one "nfs" key in its
keytab. Enable the kernel to pick the key it wants as a machine
credential when establishing a GSS context.

This is useful for GSS-protected NFSv4.0 callbacks, which are
required by RFC 7530 S3.3.3 to use the same principal as the service
principal the client used when establishing its lease.

A complementary modification to rpc.gssd is required to fully enable
this feature.

Chuck Lever 11b4d66ea3 NFSD: Handle full-length symlinks
I've given up on the idea of zero-copy handling of SYMLINK on the
server side. This is because the Linux VFS symlink API requires the
symlink pathname to be in a NUL-terminated kmalloc'd buffer. The
NUL-termination is going to be problematic (watching out for
landing on a page boundary and dealing with a 4096-byte pathname).

I don't believe that SYMLINK creation is on a performance path or is
requested frequently enough that it will cause noticeable CPU cache
pollution due to data copies.

There will be two places where a transport callout will be necessary
to fill in the rqstp: one will be in the svc_fill_symlink_pathname()
helper that is used by NFSv2 and NFSv3, and the other will be in
nfsd4_decode_create().

Chuck Lever 3fd9557aec NFSD: Refactor the generic write vector fill helper
fill_in_write_vector() is nearly the same logic as
svc_fill_write_vector(), but there are a few differences so that
the former can handle multiple WRITE payloads in a single COMPOUND.

svc_fill_write_vector() can be adjusted so that it can be used in
the NFSv4 WRITE code path too. Instead of assuming the pages are
coming from rq_args.pages, have the caller pass in the page list.

The immediate benefit is a reduction of code duplication. It also
prevents the NFSv4 WRITE decoder from passing an empty vector
element when the transport has provided the payload in the xdr_buf's
page array.

Chuck Lever 07d0ff3b0c svcrdma: Clean up Read chunk path
Simplify the error handling at the tail of recv_read_chunk() by
re-arranging rq_pages[] housekeeping and documenting it properly.

NB: In this path, svc_rdma_recvfrom returns zero. Therefore no
subsequent reply processing is done on the svc_rqstp, and thus the
rq_respages field does not need to be updated.

Chuck Lever a53d5cb064 svcrdma: Avoid releasing a page in svc_xprt_release()
svc_xprt_release() invokes svc_free_res_pages(), which releases
pages between rq_respages and rq_next_page.

Historically, the RPC/RDMA transport has set these two pointers to
be different by one, which means:

- one page gets released when svc_recv returns 0. This normally
happens whenever one or more RDMA Reads need to be dispatched to
complete construction of an RPC Call.

- one page gets released after every call to svc_send.

In both cases, this released page is immediately refilled by
svc_alloc_arg. There does not seem to be a reason for releasing this
page.

To avoid this unnecessary memory allocator traffic, set rq_next_page
more carefully.
