The section "19) Editor modelines and other cruft" in
Documentation/process/coding-style.rst clearly says, "Do not include any
of these in source files."
I recently receive a patch to explicitly add a new one.
Let's do treewide cleanups, otherwise some people follow the existing code
and attempt to upstream their favoriate editor setups.
It is even nicer if scripts/checkpatch.pl can check it.
If we like to impose coding style in an editor-independent manner, I think
editorconfig (patch [1]) is a saner solution.

ezusb_read_ltv() is always invoked via the ->read_ltv() callback. This
callback is mostly invoked under orinoco_lock() which disables BH.
There are a few invocations during probe which occur in preemptible
context via:
ezusb_probe() -> orinoco_init() -> determine_fw_capabilities()
Extend `hermes_ops' with the ->read_ltv_pr callback which is implemented
with the same callback like ->read_ltv on `hermes_ops_local'.
On `ezusb_ops' ->read_ltv is used for callbacks under the lock which
need to poll.
The new ->read_ltv_pr() is used in the preemptible context in which it
is possible to wait for the completion. Provide HERMES_READ_RECORD_PR()
and hermes_read_wordrec_pr() which behave like their non _pr equivalents
and invoke ->read_ltv_pr().
This removes the last user of ezusb_req_ctx_wait() and can now be
removed.

ezusb_access_ltv() sends the prepared request to the USB device.
Requests which have ->in_rid set expect an answer from the USB device
and the function has to wait until the URB with the answer arrives.
The function uses in_interrupt() to determine if it can simply sleep on
the completion and be woken up once the answer arrives or if it needs to
poll on the completion.
The usage of in_interrupt() in drivers is phased out and Linus clearly
requested that code which changes behaviour depending on context should
either be separated or the context be conveyed in an argument passed by the
caller, which usually knows the context.
Aside of that in_interrupt() is not correct as it does not catch preempt
disabled regions in which sleeping is also not allowed.
Provide stubs which can be used as a replacement. The current default is
the current behaviour which sleeps/polls depending on in_interrupt().
The goal is to audit all callers and use either the poll or sleep
version.

ezusb_xmit() allocates a context which is leaked if
orinoco_process_xmit_skb() returns an error.
Move ezusb_alloc_ctx() after the invocation of

The usage of in_irq()/in_interrupt() in drivers is phased out and the
BUG_ON()'s based on those are not covering all contexts in which these
functions cannot be called.
Aside of that BUG_ON() should only be used as last resort, which is clearly
not the case here.
A broad variety of checks in the invoked functions (always enabled or debug
option dependent) cover these conditions already, so the BUG_ON()'s do not
really provide additional value.

in_interrupt() is ill defined and does not provide what the name
suggests. The usage especially in driver code is deprecated and a tree wide
effort to clean up and consolidate the (ab)usage of in_interrupt() and
related checks is happening.
hfa384x_cmd() and prism2_hw_reset() check in_interrupt() at function entry
and if true emit a printk at debug loglevel and return. This is clearly debug
code.
Both functions invoke functions which can sleep. These functions already
have appropriate debug checks which cover all invalid contexts, while
in_interrupt() fails to detect context which just has preemption or
interrupts disabled.
Remove both checks as they are incomplete, debug only and already covered
by the subsequently invoked functions properly. If called from invalid
context the resulting back trace is definitely more helpful to analyze the
problem than a printk at debug loglevel.

In p54p_tx(), skb->data is mapped to streaming DMA on line 337:
mapping = pci_map_single(..., skb->data, ...);
Then skb->data is accessed on line 349:
desc->device_addr = ((struct p54_hdr *)skb->data)->req_id;
This access may cause data inconsistency between CPU cache and hardware.
To fix this problem, ((struct p54_hdr *)skb->data)->req_id is stored in
a local variable before DMA mapping, and then the driver accesses this
local variable instead of skb->data.

As said by Linus:
A symmetric naming is only helpful if it implies symmetries in use.
Otherwise it's actively misleading.
In "kzalloc()", the z is meaningful and an important part of what the
caller wants.
In "kzfree()", the z is actively detrimental, because maybe in the
future we really _might_ want to use that "memfill(0xdeadbeef)" or
something. The "zero" part of the interface isn't even _relevant_.
The main reason that kzfree() exists is to clear sensitive information
that should not be leaked to other future users of the same memory
objects.
Rename kzfree() to kfree_sensitive() to follow the example of the recently
added kvfree_sensitive() and make the intention of the API more explicit.
In addition, memzero_explicit() is used to clear the memory to make sure
that it won't get optimized away by the compiler.
The renaming is done by using the command sequence:
git grep -w --name-only kzfree |\
xargs sed -i 's/kzfree/kfree_sensitive/'
followed by some editing of the kfree_sensitive() kerneldoc and adding
a kzfree backward compatibility macro in slab.h.

Drivers using legacy power management .suspen()/.resume() callbacks
have to manage PCI states and device's PM states themselves. They also
need to take care of standard configuration registers.
Switch to generic power management framework using a single
"struct dev_pm_ops" variable to take the unnecessary load from the driver.
This also avoids the need for the driver to directly call most of the PCI
helper functions and device power state control functions as through
the generic framework, PCI Core takes care of the necessary operations,
and drivers are required to do only device-specific jobs.

With the support of generic PM callbacks, drivers no longer need to use
legacy .suspend() and .resume() in which they had to maintain PCI states
changes and device's power state themselves. The required operations are
done by PCI core.
PCI drivers are not expected to invoke PCI helper functions like
pci_save/restore_state(), pci_enable/disable_device(),
pci_set_power_state(), etc. Their tasks are completed by PCI core itself.

Since commit 84af7a6194 ("checkpatch: kconfig: prefer 'help' over
'---help---'"), the number of '---help---' has been gradually
decreasing, but there are still more than 2400 instances.
This commit finishes the conversion. While I touched the lines,
I also fixed the indentation.
There are a variety of indentation styles found.
a) 4 spaces + '---help---'
b) 7 spaces + '---help---'
c) 8 spaces + '---help---'
d) 1 space + 1 tab + '---help---'
e) 1 tab + '---help---' (correct indentation)
f) 1 tab + 1 space + '---help---'
g) 1 tab + 2 spaces + '---help---'
In order to convert all of them to 1 tab + 'help', I ran the
following commend:
$ find . -name 'Kconfig*' | xargs sed -i 's/^[[:space:]]*---help---/\thelp/'

The dynamic key update for addr_list_lock still causes troubles,
for example the following race condition still exists:
CPU 0: CPU 1:
(RCU read lock) (RTNL lock)
dev_mc_seq_show() netdev_update_lockdep_key()
-> lockdep_unregister_key()
-> netif_addr_lock_bh()
because lockdep doesn't provide an API to update it atomically.
Therefore, we have to move it back to static keys and use subclass
for nest locking like before.
In commit 1a33e10e4a ("net: partially revert dynamic lockdep key
changes"), I already reverted most parts of commit ab92d68fc2
("net: core: add generic lockdep keys").
This patch reverts the rest and also part of commit f3b0a18bb6
("net: remove unnecessary variables and callback"). After this
patch, addr_list_lock changes back to using static keys and
subclasses to satisfy lockdep. Thanks to dev->lower_level, we do
not have to change back to ->ndo_get_lock_subclass().
And hopefully this reduces some syzbot lockdep noises too.

The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2],
introduced in C99:
struct foo {
int stuff;
struct boo array[];
};
By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning
in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which
will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.
Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by
this change:
"Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator
may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]
sizeof(flexible-array-member) triggers a warning because flexible array
members have incomplete type[1]. There are some instances of code in
which the sizeof operator is being incorrectly/erroneously applied to
zero-length arrays and the result is zero. Such instances may be hiding
some bugs. So, this work (flexible-array member conversions) will also
help to get completely rid of those sorts of issues.
This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle.
