In some cases, like TDLS, they can be Ethernet.
Hence checking, e.g. frame_control could yield

commit a70587b338 ("ath10k: configure copy engine 5 for HTT messages")
moved send completion polling under HTT Rx (CE 5) service routine. For
QCA6174 based devices copy engine 1 (CE 1) is used for HTT Rx instead
of CE 5. So send completion never be called. This is causing "failed to
transmit packet, dropping: -105" errors. Fix this by processing send
completion from CE 1 service routine instead of CE 5.

Of a word in struct htt_data_tx_desc htt version >= 3.4 firmware uses
LSB 16-bit for frequency configuration which is used for offchannel tx
and MSB 16-bit is for peerid. But other firmwares using version 2.X
(10.1, 10.2.2, 10.2.4 and 10.4) are using 32-bit for peerid in htt tx
desc. So far no issue is found with the existing code setting peerid and
freq for HTT version 2.X, this could be mainly because of 0 as frequecy
(home channel) is being always passed with those firmwares. There may be
issues when non-zero freq is passed with firmware using < 3.4 htt version.
To be safe use target_version_major and target_version_minor along with
htt-op-version before configuring peer id and freq in htt tx desc. This
patch extends ath10k_mac_tx_frm_has_freq() to check for htt_op_version_tlv
and uses the helper while setting peerid in htt_tx_desc.

There is an extra 4-byte member when compared to WMI 10.2 added to
assoc complete command in WMI 10.4. This new member is used for 160Mhz
related configuration. This WMI command mismatch between host and
firmware does not cause any real issues because this new member is not
used in 10.4 firmwares so far (10.4.1.00030-1). This difference in WMI
command interface brings in a new wmi_ops for 10.4 gen_peer_assoc().

fixed to work with future 10.4 firmwares which may be using this new

in ath10k_skb_cb as 'paddr'. ath10k doesn't rely on the meta/transfer_id

European Union has made it mandatory that all devices working in 2.4 GHz
has to adhere to the ETSI specification (ETSI EN 300 328 V1.9.1)
beginnig this year. The standard basically speaks about interferences
in 2.4Ghz band.
For example, when 802.11 device detects interference, TX must be stopped
as long as interference is present.
Adaptive CCA is a feature, when enabled the device learns from the
environment and configures CCA levels adaptively. This will improve
detecting interferences and the device can stop trasmissions till the
interference is present eventually leading to good performances in
varying interference conditions.
The patch includes code for enabling adaptive CCA for 10.2.4 firmware on

To avoid HTC level processing overhead in both host and target,
the unused copy engine 5 is being used for receiving HTT T2H messages.
This will speedup the receive data processing as well as htt tx completion.
Hence host and target copy engine configuration tables are updated
to enable CE5 pipe. The in-direction HTT mapping is now pointing to CE5
for all HTT T2H.
Moreover HTT send completion messages are polled from HTC handler
as CE 4 is not interrupt-driven. For faster tx completion, CE4 polling
needs to be done whenever CE pipe which transports HTT Rx (target->host)
is processed. This avoids overhead of polling HTT messages from HTC
layer. Servicing CE 4 faster is helping to solve "failed to transmit
packet, dropping: -105".

board id combinations. We get these IDs from the target using BMI after otp.bin

This patch reorders the call to the function ath10k_core_fetch_board_file
so that we have OTP binary before requesting for boardid-chipid. We get this

QCA6174 needs different board files based on board type. To make it easier to
distribute multiple board files and automatically choose correct board file
create a simple TLV file format following the same principles as with FW IEs.
The file is named board-2.bin and contain multiple board files. Each board file
then can have multiple names.
ath10k searches for file board-N.bin (where N is the interface version number
for the board file, just like we for firmware files) in /lib/firmware/*, for
example for qca99x0 it will try to find it here:
/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA99X0/hw2.0/board-2.bin
If ath10k doesn't find board-2.bin then it will fallback to the old board.bin file.
This patch adds a simple name scheme using pci device id which for now will be
used by qca6174:
bus=%s,vendor=%04x,device=%04x,subsystem-vendor=%04x,subsystem-device=%04x
This removes the old method of having subsystem ids in ar->spec_board_id and
using that in the board file name.

After processing received packets from copy engine, host will allocate
new buffer and queue them back to copy engine ring for further
packet reception. On post rx processing path, skb allocation and
dma mapping are unnecessarily handled within ce_lock. This is affecting
peak throughput and also causing more CPU consumption. Optimize this
by acquiring ce_lock only when accessing copy engine ring and moving
skb allocation out of ce_lock.
In AP148 platform with QCA99x0 in conducted environment, UDP uplink peak
throughput is improved from ~1320 Mbps to ~1450 Mbps and TCP uplink peak
throughput is increased from ~1240 Mbps (70% host CPU load) to ~1300 Mbps
(71% CPU load). Similarly ~40Mbps improvement is observed in downlink
path.

Its a bit odd that debugfs_create_bool() takes 'u32 *' as an argument,
when all it needs is a boolean pointer.
It would be better to update this API to make it accept 'bool *'
instead, as that will make it more consistent and often more convenient.
Over that bool takes just a byte.
That required updates to all user sites as well, in the same commit
updating the API. regmap core was also using
debugfs_{read|write}_file_bool(), directly and variable types were
updated for that to be bool as well.

Add support for mesh to ath10k. We simply use an AP virtual interface
in the firmware in order to enable beaconing without TSF adoption, and
use the raw (802.11) transmit mode.
Due to firmware limitations, the firmware must operate in raw
(non-native 802.11) mode. As this is configured at firmware init time,
a new "rawmode" modparam is added, and mesh interfaces are available
only if rawmode=true. The firmware must advertise support for rawmode;
tested successfully with firmware 10.2.4.70.6-2.
When the module is loaded with (newly implemented) modparam rawmode=1, it
will enable operating an open mesh STA via something like the following:
ip link set wlan0 down
iw dev wlan0 set type mp
ip link set wlan0 up
iw dev wlan0 set freq 5745 80 5775

During long hours of stress testing like AP interface up/down along
with continuous ping flood from a station doing connect/disconnect,
it is observed that the system is not able to allocate DMA consistent
memory of size > 512KB chunks as requested by firmware in WMI_SERVICE_EVENTID.
With the system memory getting fragmented during the run based on the
size of the memory requested, the failure to return physically continguous
memory of high order can happen. Once the system gets to this situation,
bringing up the wifi interface will fail and a system reboot may be needed
to make it work again. This problem is obseved with QCA99X0.
To fix this issue, allocate the DMA memory requested by firmware during
device probe time and keep it during the life time of the device. WMI service
ready event handler is changed to allocate the memory chunks if it is
not already allocated or if the memory allocated for the previous ready
event is not same as the current requested ones. After this patch the
memory usage when wifi is inactive will be inceased by few 100KB to
3MB based on the target type.

To enable/configure spectral scan parameters in 10.4 firmware, existing
wmi spectral related functions can be reused. Link those functions in
10.4 wmi ops table.
In addition, adjust bin size (only when size is 68 bytes) before reporting
bin samples to user space. The background for this adjustment is that
qca99x0 reports bin size as 68 bytes (64 bytes + 4 bytes) in report
mode 2. First 64 bytes carries in-band tones (-32 to +31) and last 4 byte
carries band edge detection data (+32) mainly used in radar detection
purpose. Additional last 4 bytes are stripped to make bin size valid one.
This bin size adjustment will happen only for qca99x0, all other chipsets
will report proper bin sizes (64/128) without extra 4 bytes being added
at the end. The changes are validated in qca99x0 using 10.4 firmware.

Existing phyerr event handlers directly uses phyerr header format
(ie, struct wmi_phyerr and struct wmi_phyerr_event) in the code
exactly on how firmware packs it. This is the problem in 10.4 fw
specific phyerr event handling where it uses different phyerror
header format. Before adding 10.4 specific handler, little bit of
refactor is done in existing phyerr handlers.
Two new abstracted structures (struct wmi_phyerr_ev_hdr_arg and
struct wmi_phyerr_ev_arg) are introduced to remove dependency of using
firmware specific header format in the code. So that firmware specific
phyerror handlers can populate values to abstracted structures and
the following code can use abstracted struct for further operation.
.pull_phyerr_hdr is added newly to pull common phyerr header info
like tsf, buf_len, number of phyerr packed. Existing .pull_phyerr
handler is changed and called to parse every sub phyerrs in the event.
Validated these refactoring on qca988x hw2.0 using fw 10.2.4 version.

in QCA99X0 firmware. First one is a notification at the begining

second one is a notification at the end of the dwell time with cmd_flag
CHAN_INFO_PRE_COMPLETE (cmd_flag = 2) and the third is the indication
with CHAN_INFO_COMPLETE (cmd_flag = 1) which is the last indication for

Vif's vdev_id is used as queue number. However due
to the tx pausing design in ath10k it was possible
for a new interface to be created with its tx
queue stopped (via ieee80211_stop_queues). This
could in turn leave the interface inoperable until
ath10k_mac_tx_unlock() was called.
This problem only affected multi-vif scenarios when
new interfaces were created some time later after
other interfaces have been running for some time
and had Tx queue full at some point prior.

Even though there's a WMI enum for fragmentation
threshold no known firmware actually implements
it. Moreover it is not possible to rely frame
fragmentation to mac80211 because firmware clears
the "more fragments" bit in frame control making
it impossible for remote devices to reassemble
frames.
Hence implement a dummy callback just to say
fragmentation isn't supported. This effectively
prevents mac80211 from doing frame fragmentation
in software.

Initial QCA99X0 support has a known issue with TCP Tx throughput.
All other path such as UDP Tx/Rx and TCP Rx meet their expectation
(> 900Mbps), but TCP Tx marked as low as 5Mbps when single pair is
used on iperf.
The root cause is turned out because TSO flag is not initialized
properly so that firmware configures TSO in wrong way.
TSO flags in msdu extension descriptor is required to be reset
to indicate firmware there is no TSO is enabled, otherwise it
could act as TSO is enabled which causes huge throughput drop.
In fact, it's enough by resetting TSO flags only to prevent the
unexpected behavior, but initializing whole msdu ext. descriptor
will help to clear uncertainty of firmware could bring on as it
constantly updated.

Host memory required for firmware is allocated while handling
wmi service ready event. Right now, wmi service ready is handled
in tasklet context and it calls dma_alloc_coherent() with atomic
flag (GFP_ATOMIC) to allocate memory in host needed for firmware.
The problem is, dma_alloc_coherent() with GFP_ATOMIC fails in
the platform (at least in AP platform) where it has less atomic
pool memory (< 2mb). QCA99X0 requires around 2 MB of host memory
for one card, having additional QCA99X0 card in the same platform
will require similarly amount of memory. So, it's not guaranteed that
all the platform will have enough atomic memory pool.
Fix this issue, by handling wmi service ready event in workqueue
context and calling dma_alloc_coherent() with GFP_KERNEL. mac80211 work
queue will not be ready at the time of handling wmi service ready.
So, it can't be used to handle wmi service ready. Also, register work
gets scheduled during insmod in existing ath10k_wq and waits for
wmi service ready to completed. Both workqueue can't be used for
this purpose. New auxiliary workqueue is added to handle wmi service
ready.

When using DFS channels on Ath10k, kernel log has repeated warning message
'failed to process fft: -22' typically under medium/heavy traffic.
This patch switches the warnings to driver debug (WMI events) mode only
thus reducing log file noise.
DFS and spectral scan share underlying HW mechanisms and enabling one
(DFS) enables the other (spectral scan) as far as event reporting from
firmware to driver is concerned. Spectral scan events take no part in
processing of DFS radar pulses which are delivered as distinct events,
so the fft (spectral event) warning is harmless and DFS interference
detection/protection still occurs.

HTT_H2T_MSG_TYPE_MGMT_TX msg in 10.4 firmware carries additional
4 byte in htt_mgmt_tx_desc where it tells to firmware that at what
rate mgmt frame has to go out in the air. It's an optional parameter,
setting this field to zero will force firmware to choose auto rate
and send the frame out.
Those 4 byte info is missed out in the current code and 10.4 firmware
ended up reading some junk in those 4 byte and sometime malfunctioning.
Fix it by adding 4 byte in struct htt_mgmt_tx_desc. Non 10.4 firmware
will not process those four byte. So, adding 4 byte at the end of
struct htt_mgmt_tx_desc will not create any impact on other chipset.

Since QCA99X0 uses fragmentation descriptor differently from
other ones on tx path, we need to handle it separately.
QCA99X0 is using 48 bits for address and 16 bits for length
out of 2 dword and each values have to be programmed by frag
desc base addr + msdu id, so that hardware can retrieve

It is observed that during cold reset pcie access right
after a write operation to SOC_GLOBAL_RESET_ADDRESS causes
Data Bus Error and system hard lockup. The reason
for bus error is that pcie needs some time to get
back to stable state for any transaction during cold reset. Add
delay of 20 msecs after write of SOC_GLOBAL_RESET_ADDRESS

Pre qca99X0 chipsets follows the model where dynamically allocate
memory for frag desc on getting new skb for TX. But, this is not
going to be the case in qca99X0. It expects frag desc memory to be
allocated at boot time and let the driver to reuse allocated memory
after every TX completion. So there won't be any dynamic frag memory
memory allocation in qca99X0 during data transmission.
qca99X0 hardware doesn't need fragment desc address to be programmed
in msdu descriptor for every data transaction. It needs to know only
starting address of fragment descriptor at the time of the boot.
During data transmission, qca99X0 hardware can retrieve corresponding
frag addr by adding programmed frag desc base addr + msdu id.
Allocate continuous fragment descriptor memory (same size as number of
descriptor) at the time of target initialization and configure allocated
dma address to the target via HTT_H2T_MSG_TYPE_FRAG_DESC_BANK_CFG.
How this is allocated continuous memory is going to be used is not
covered in this patch. It just allocates memory and hand over to firmware.
If we don't do it at init time, qca99X0 will stall when firmware tries
to do TX.

Due to 512 client support in 10.4 firmware, size of tim ie is going
to be slightly higher than non 10.4 firmware. So, size of tim_bitmap
what is carried in swba event from 10.4 firmware is bit higher.
The only bottle neck to reuse existing swba handler
ath10k_wmi_event_host_swba() for 10.4 is that code designed to deal
with fixed size tim bitmap(ie, tim_info[].tim_bitmap in wmi_swba_ev_arg).
This patch removes such size limitation and makes it more suitable
to handle swba event which has different size tim bitmap.
All existing swba event parsing functions are changed to adapt this

As we're running out of hardware capability flags pretty quickly,
convert them to use the regular test_bit() style unsigned long
bitmaps.
This introduces a number of helper functions/macros to set and to
test the bits, along with new debugfs code.
The occurrences of an explicit __clear_bit() are intentional, the
drivers were never supposed to change their supported bits on the
fly. We should investigate changing this to be a per-frame flag.

In practice there's no point in having a copy of
chanctx_conf.
Most of the time the channel pointer (and band
along with it) is accessed and this can't change
after a chanctx is created because switching is
done using explicit chanctx swapping via
switch_vif_chanctx().
The only thing that can change within a
chanctx_conf and is used by the driver is
radar_enabled and channel width. These are however
always accessed in adequate mac80211 callback
context which guarantees safe access to the
chanctx data.

In some cases some channel survey data was
reported incorrect.
Channel info events were expected to come in pairs
without and with COMPLETE flag set respectively
for each channel visit during scan.
The known deviation from this is rule for last
scan chan info and first (next) scan chan info
both have COMPLETE flag set. This was either
programmed with the intent of providing BSS cycle
count info or this is an artefact of firmware scan
state machine. Either way this is useless due to
short wraparound time, wraparound quirks and no
overflow notification.
Survey dumps now include only data gathered during
scan channel visits that can be computed
correctly.
This should improve hostapd ACS a little bit.

When QCA988X cycle counter HW register wraps
around it resets to 0x7fffffff instead of 0. All
other cycle counter related registers are divided
by 2 so they never wraparound themselves. QCA61X4
has a uniform CC and it wraparounds in a regular
fashion though.
Worst case wraparound time is approx 24 seconds
(2**31 / 88MHz). Since scan channel visit times
are max 5 seconds (offchannel case) it is
guaranteed there's been at most 1 wraparound and
it is possible to compute survey active time
value. It is, however, impossible to determine the
point at which Rx Clear Count has been divided by
two so it is not reported upon wraparound.
This fixes some occasional incorrect survey data
on QCA988X as some channels (depending on how/when
scan/offchannel requests were requested) would
have approx 24 sec active time which wasn't
actually the case.
This should improve hostapd ACS a little bit.

Some firmware revisions pad 4th hw address in
Native Wifi Rx decap. This is the case with 10.x
and it was assumed that this is true for all
firmware images.
However QCA988X with 999.999.0.636 and QCA61X4
with WLAN.RM.2.0-00088 don't have the padding.
Hence add a feature flag indicating that the
padding isn't present so firmware images can
advertise it appropriately. This way driver will
behave as it was before with old firmware blobs
and doesn't cause any regressions from user
perspective.
Effectively this patch enables QCA988X with
999.999.0.636 and QCA61X4 with WLAN.RM.2.0-00088
to set up client bridging provided user has an
updated firmware blob.

By using SOC_WAKE register it is possible to bring
down power consumption of QCA61X4 from 36mA to
16mA when associated and idle.
Currently the sleep threshold/grace period is at a
very conservative value of 60ms.
Contrary to QCA61X4 the QCA988X firmware doesn't
have Rx/beacon filtering available for client mode
and SWBA events are used for beaconing in AP/IBSS
so the SoC needs to be woken up at least every
~100ms in most cases. This means that QCA988X
is at a disadvantage and the power consumption
won't drop as much as for QCA61X4.
Due to putting irq-safe spinlocks on every MMIO
read/write it is expected this can cause a little
performance regression on some systems. I haven't
done any thorough measurements but some of my
tests don't show any extreme degradation.
The patch removes some explicit pci_wake calls
that were added in 320e14b8db51aa ("ath10k: fix
some pci wake/sleep issues"). This is safe because
all MMIO accesses are now wrapped and the device
is woken up automatically if necessary.

Spectral scan supported by ath10k has capability to monitor and report
through whole bands and channels, but current buffer size is too small
to save reported spectral scan data.
This results in dropping 5G channel reports at all when dual band card
is used, so that users are not able to analyze spectral environments.
Hence increase the buffer size to fix the problem.
A spectral data size is vary based on the number of bins, so the unit
buffer size, 1140, is chose to minimize relay buffer fragmentation.
The total buffer size is also chose in tradeoff with spectral scan
support vs. kernel memory consumption.
Since theoretical maximum buffer size, 9.5MB, can be consumed with
512 bins in dual bands, we target to cover up to 128 bins for all
channels in dual bands and due to the buffer size limitation,
spectral scan with bin number bigger than 128 needs to be run on
single band each.

Major changes in ath10k:
* enable channel 144 on 5 GHz
* enable Adaptive Noise Immunity (ANI) by default
* add Wake on Wireless LAN (WOW) patterns support
* add basic Tunneled Direct Link Setup (TDLS) support
* add multi-channel support for QCA6174
* enable IBSS RSN support
* enable Bluetooth Coexistance whenever firmware supports it
* add more versatile way to set bitrates used by the firmware
Until now only a single fixed tx rate or nss was
allowed to be set.
The patch attempts to improve this by allowing
most bitrate masks. The limitation is VHT MCS
rates cannot be expressed separately using
existing firmware interfaces and only the
following VHT MCS ranges are supported: none, 0-7,
0-8, and 0-9.
This keeps the old behaviour when requesting
single tx rate or single nss. The new bitrate mask
logic is only applied to other cases that would
return -EINVAL until now.
Depending on firmware revisions some combinations
may crash firmware so use with care, please.
This depends on "ath10k: don't use reassoc flag".
Without it key cache would effectively be
invalidated upon bitrate change leading to
communication being no longer possible.
These work:
iw wlan0 set bitrates legacy-5 6 12 ht-mcs-5 1 2 3
iw wlan0 set bitrates legacy-5 ht-mcs-5 7 8 9
iw wlan0 set bitrates legacy-5 24 ht-mcs-5 vht-mcs-5 1:0-9
These won't work:
iw wlan0 set bitrates legacy-5 ht-mcs-5 vht-mcs-5 1:0-5
iw wlan0 set bitrates vht-mcs-5 2:7-9
(note the invalid VHT MCS ranges)

Some devices differ slightly and require different
board files. If wrong board data is used they
crash or behave incorrectly.
These devices can be differentiated by looking at
PCI subsystem device id. That is the case for
qca61x4 devices at least.
The board specific filename is constructed as:
board-<bus>-<id>.bin
For PCI in particular it is:
board-pci-<vendor>:<dev>:<subsys_vendor>:<subsys_dev>.bin
These files are looked in device/hw specific
directories. Hence for Killer 1525 (qca6174 hw2.1)
ath10k will request:
/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw2.1/board-pci-168c:003e:1a56:1525.bin
To not break any existing setups (e.g. in case
some devices in the wild already have subsys ids)
if a board specific file isn't found a generic one
is used which is the one which would be used until
now. This guarantees that after upgrading a driver
device will not suddenly stop working due to
now-missing specific board file. If this is the
case a "fallback" string is appended to the info
string when driver boots.
Keep in mind this is distinct from cal-pci-*.bin
files which contain full calibration data and MAC
address. Cal data is aimed at systems where
calibration data is stored out of band, e.g. on
nand flash instead of device EEPROM - an approach
taken by some AP/router vendors.
Board files are more of a template and needs some
bits to be filled in by the OTP program using
device EEPROM contents.
One could argue to map subsystem ids to some board
design codename strings instead of using raw ids
when building the board filename. Using a mapping
however would make it a lot more cumbersome and
time consuming (due to how patches propagate over
various kernel trees) to add support for some new
device board designs. Adding a board file is a lot
quicker and doesn't require recompilation.

WLAN survey data provides several informative values on each channels
such as noise, active time, transmit time, and etc.
Regarding the channel activity time data, it is reported from firmware
in different form which is number of cycles instead of time itself.
Hence host driver converts it to time unit by dividing it by clock rate
that is used at baseband MAC.
Using difference clock rate from that actual HW is using will result in
inaccurate survey data. For instance, channel active time can be reported
with bigger than 150ms even though we set Dwell time to 150ms.
Therefore set the clock rate to 88000 (88 MHz) which is ath10k baseband
MAC is using.

With latest additions to the driver it seems
viable to enable support for IBSS-RSN.
It seems to work on QCA988X and 999.999.0.636 but
is a bit slow to exchange RSN keys for some
reason. This may be a firmware quirk or ath10k is
missing something. Nevertheless it makes sense to
finally enable IBSS-RSN in ath10k even if somewhat
handicapped.
QCA6174 firmware doesn't seem to be able to Tx
EAPOL frames at all now (they get stuck in hw
queues for some reason) so it never gets to set
the keys in driver. It's fairly safe to assume that
once this is fixed IBSS-RSN will work with QCA6174

Apparently firmware requires both pairwise and
groupwise keys to be installed per-peer for static
WEP in IBSS. This wasn't necessary for AP mode
(and installing both doesn't seem to break AP

Also there seems to be some kind of issue with
mapping tx/rx keys in firmware properly which
resulted in wrong keys being used and broken
communication between devices.

workaround than a real fix. However I couldn't

The default keyidx callback may be called after

WEP key being reinstalled only. This caused Rxed

The variable should be cleared regardless of
whether there's a peer associated with the key or
not.
This fixes case when user first associates with 2
WEP keys and then disconnects and connects with 1
WEP key. This resulted in WEP key count being 2 in
the driver leading to default keyidx fixup

The number of 3 vdevs wasn't enough to handle the
worst case for interface combinations in practice.
wpa_supplicant may need up to 4 vifs to have 2
vifs actually connected, i.e. p2pdev + client + 2x
p2p (either p2p client or p2p go).
This fixes worst case warning:
Free vdev map is empty, no more interfaces allowed.
This keeps the ability to associate 32 stations in
AP mode at the cost of not being able to guarantee
that under all circumstances, i.e. some
combinations may consume additional fw peer
entries for internal purposes leaving less
resource for stations in AP mode.

Instead of using a hacky table and magic values
use supported band information advertised to
mac80211.
This may impact performance a little when dealing
with legacy rx rates depending on system
architecture. It's probably negligible.

when HT/VHT rates weren't reported correctly if
channel frequency wasn't known.
