Analogix_dp driver acquires all its resources in the ->bind() callback,
what is a bit against the component driver based approach, where the
driver initialization is split into a probe(), where all resources are
gathered, and a bind(), where all objects are created and a compound
driver is initialized.
Extract all the resource related operations to analogix_dp_probe() and
analogix_dp_remove(), then call them before/after registration of the
device components from the main Exynos DP and Rockchip DP drivers. Also
move the plat_data initialization to the probe() to make it available for
the analogix_dp_probe() function.
This fixes the multiple calls to the bind() of the DRM compound driver
when the DP PHY driver is not yet loaded/probed:

Drive-by fix I noticed the other day - drm_dp_mst_has_audio() only ever
made sense back when we still had to validate ports before accessing
them in order to (attempt to) avoid NULL dereferences. Since we have
proper reference counting that guarantees we always can safely access
the MST port, there's no use in keeping this function around as all it
does is validate the port pointer before checking the audio status.
Note - drm_dp_mst_port->has_audio is technically protected by
drm_device->mode_config.connection_mutex, since it's only ever updated
from drm_dp_mst_get_edid(). Additionally, we change the declaration for
port in struct intel_connector to be properly typed, so we can directly
access it.

This commit reworks the permission handling of the two ioctls. In
particular it enforced the CAP_SYS_ADMIN check only, if:
- we're issuing the ioctl from process other than the one which opened
the node, and
- we are, or were master in the past
This ensures that we:
- do not regress the systemd-logind style of DRM_MASTER arbitrator
- allow applications which do not use systemd-logind to drop their
master capabilities (and regain them at later point) ... w/o running as
root.
See the comment above drm_master_check_perm() for more details.

Currently we have one down reply message servicing the mst manager, so
we need to serialize all tx msgs to ensure we only have one message in

suboptimal than the free-for-all we had before serialization).
This patch removes the single down_rep_recv message from manager and
adds 2 replies in the branch structure. The 2 replies mirrors the tx_slots

All collected together to provide a consistent story in one patch,
instead of the somewhat bumpy refactor-evolution leading to this.
Also some thoughts on what the next steps could be:
- Create a macro called devm_drm_dev_alloc() which essentially wraps
the kzalloc(); devm_drm_dev_init(); drmm_add_final_kfree() combo.
Needs to be a macro since we'll have to do some typeof trickery and
casting to make this fully generic for all drivers that embed struct
drm_device into their own thing.
- A lot of the simple drivers now have essentially just
drm_dev_unplug(); drm_atomic_helper_shutdown(); as their
$bus_driver->remove hook. We could create a devm_mode_config_reset
which sets drm_atomic_helper_shutdown as it's cleanup action, and a
devm_drm_dev_register with drm_dev_unplug as it's cleanup action,
and simple drivers wouldn't have a need for a ->remove function at
all, and we could delete them.
- For more complicated drivers we need drmm_ versions of a _lot_ more
things. All the userspace visible objects (crtc, plane, encoder,
crtc), anything else hanging of those (maybe a drmm_get_edid, at
least for panels and other built-in stuff).
Also some more thoughts on why we're not reusing devm_ with maybe a
fake struct device embedded into the drm_device (we can't use the
kdev, since that's in each drm_minor).
- Code review gets extremely tricky, since every time you see a devm_
you need to carefully check whether the fake device (with the
drm_device lifetim) or the real device (with the lifetim of the
underlying physical device and driver binding) are used. That's not
going to help at all, and we have enormous amounts of drivers who
use devm_ where they really shouldn't. Having different types makes
sure the compiler type checks this for us and ensures correctness.
- The set of functions are very much non-overlapping. E.g.
devm_ioremap makes total sense, drmm_ioremap has the wrong lifetime,
since hw resources need to be cleaned out at driver unbind and wont
outlive that like a drm_device. Similar, but other way round for
drmm_connector_init (which is the only correct version, devm_ for
drm_connector is just buggy). Simply not having the wrong version
again prevents bugs.
Finally I guess this opens a huge todo for all the drivers. I'm
semi-tempted to do a tree-wide s/devm_kzalloc/drmm_kzalloc/ since most
likely that'll fix an enormous amount of bugs and most likely not
cause any issues at all (aside from maybe holding onto memory slightly
too long).

drm_mode_config_cleanup is idempotent, so no harm in calling this
twice. This allows us to gradually switch drivers over by removing
explicit drm_mode_config_cleanup calls.
With this step it's now also possible that (at least for simple
drivers) automatic resource cleanup can be done correctly without a
drm_driver->release hook. Therefore allow this now in
devm_drm_dev_init().
Also with drmm_ explicit drm_driver->release hooks are kinda not the
best option: Drivers can always just register their current release
hook with drmm_add_action, but even better they could split them up to
simplify the unwinding for the driver load failure case. So deprecate
that hook to discourage future users.
v2: Fixup the example in the kerneldoc too.

- For paranoia, double check that minor->dev == dev in the release

Nothing special here, except that this is the first time that we
automatically clean up something that's initialized with an explicit
driver call. But the cleanup was done at the very end of the release
sequence for all drivers, and that's still the case. At least without
more uses of drmm_ through explicit driver calls.
Also for this one we need drmm_kcalloc, so lets add those.
The motivation here is to allow us to remove the explicit calls to
drm_dev_fini() from all drivers.

The cleanup here is somewhat tricky, since we can't tell apart the
allocated minor index from 0. So register a cleanup action first, and
if the index allocation fails, unregister that cleanup action again to
avoid bad mistakes.

We have lots of these. And the cleanup code tends to be of dubious
quality. The biggest wrong pattern is that developers use devm_, which
ties the release action to the underlying struct device, whereas
all the userspace visible stuff attached to a drm_device can long
outlive that one (e.g. after a hotunplug while userspace has open
files and mmap'ed buffers). Give people what they want, but with more
correctness.
Mostly copied from devres.c, with types adjusted to fit drm_device and
a few simplifications - I didn't (yet) copy over everything. Since
the types don't match code sharing looked like a hopeless endeavour.
For now it's only super simplified, no groups, you can't remove
actions (but kfree exists, we'll need that soon). Plus all specific to
drm_device ofc, including the logging. Which I didn't bother to make
compile-time optional, since none of the other drm logging is compile
time optional either.
One tricky bit here is the chicken&egg between allocating your
drm_device structure and initiliazing it with drm_dev_init. For
perfect onion unwinding we'd need to have the action to kfree the
allocation registered before drm_dev_init registers any of its own
release handlers. But drm_dev_init doesn't know where exactly the
drm_device is emebedded into the overall structure, and by the time it
returns it'll all be too late. And forcing drivers to be able clean up
everything except the one kzalloc is silly.
Work around this by having a very special final_kfree pointer. This
also avoids troubles with the list head possibly disappearing from
underneath us when we release all resources attached to the
drm_device.
v2: Do all the kerneldoc at the end, to avoid lots of fairly pointless
shuffling while getting everything into shape.
v3: Add static to add/del_dr (Neil)
Move typo fix to the right patch (Neil)
v4: Enforce contract for drmm_add_final_kfree:
Use ksize() to check that the drm_device is indeed contained somewhere
in the final kfree(). Because we need that or the entire managed
release logic blows up in a pile of use-after-frees. Motivated by a
discussion with Laurent.
v5: Review from Laurent:
- %zu instead of casting size_t
- header guards
- sorting of includes
- guarding of data assignment if we didn't allocate it for a NULL
pointer
- delete spurious newline
- cast void* data parameter correctly in ->release call, no idea how
this even worked before
v6: Review from Sam
- Add the kerneldoc for the managed sub-struct back in, even if it
doesn't show up in the generated html somehow.
- Explain why __always_inline.
- Fix bisectability around the final kfree() in drm_dev_relase(). This
is just interim code which will disappear again.
- Some whitespace polish.
- Add debug output when drmm_add_action or drmm_kmalloc fail.
v7: My bisectability fix wasn't up to par as noticed by smatch.
v8: Remove unecessary {} around if else
v9: Use kstrdup_const, which requires kfree_const and introducing a free_dr()
helper (Thomas).
v10: kfree_const goes boom on the plain "kmalloc" assignment, somehow
we need to wrap that in kstrdup_const() too!! Also renumber revision
log, I somehow reset it midway thruh.

This fixes a problem found on the MacBookPro 2017 Retina panel.
The panel reports 10 bpc color depth in its EDID, and the
firmware chooses link settings at boot which support enough
bandwidth for 10 bpc (324000 kbit/sec = multiplier 0xc),
but the DP_MAX_LINK_RATE dpcd register only reports
2.7 Gbps (multiplier value 0xa) as possible, in direct
contradiction of what the firmware successfully set up.
This restricts the panel to 8 bpc, not providing the full
color depth of the panel.
This patch adds a quirk specific to the MBP 2017 15" Retina
panel to add the additiional 324000 kbps link rate during
edp setup.

DisplayPort specifications are fun. For a while, it's been really
unclear to us what available_pbn actually does. There's a somewhat vague
explanation in the DisplayPort spec (starting from 1.2) that partially
explains it:
The minimum payload bandwidth number supported by the path. Each node
updates this number with its available payload bandwidth number if its
payload bandwidth number is less than that in the Message Transaction
reply.
So, it sounds like available_pbn represents the smallest link rate in
use between the source and the branch device. Cool, so full_pbn is just
the highest possible PBN that the branch device supports right?
Well, we assumed that for quite a while until Sean Paul noticed that on
some MST hubs, available_pbn will actually get set to 0 whenever there's
any active payloads on the respective branch device. This caused quite a
bit of confusion since clearing the payload ID table would end up fixing
the available_pbn value.
So, we just went with that until commit cd82d82cbc ("drm/dp_mst: Add
branch bandwidth validation to MST atomic check") started breaking
people's setups due to us getting erroneous available_pbn values. So, we
did some more digging and got confused until we finally looked at the
definition for full_pbn:
The bandwidth of the link at the trained link rate and lane count
between the DP Source device and the DP Sink device with no time slots
allocated to VC Payloads, represented as a Payload Bandwidth Number. As
with the Available_Payload_Bandwidth_Number, this number is determined
by the link with the lowest lane count and link rate.
That's what we get for not reading specs closely enough, hehe. So, since
full_pbn is definitely what we want for doing bandwidth restriction
checks - let's start using that instead and ignore available_pbn
entirely.

The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2],
introduced in C99:
struct foo {
int stuff;
struct boo array[];
};
By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning
in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which
will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.
Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by
this change:
"Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator
may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]
This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle.

The X1 Extreme is one of the systems that lies about which backlight
interface that it uses in its VBIOS as PWM backlight controls don't work
at all on this machine. It's possible that this panel could be one of
the infamous ones that can switch between PWM mode and DPCD backlight
control mode, but we haven't gotten any more details on this from Lenovo
just yet. For the time being though, making sure the backlight 'just
works' is a bit more important.
So, add a quirk to force DPCD backlight controls on for these systems
based on EDID (since this panel doesn't appear to fill in the device ID).
Hopefully in the future we'll figure out a better way of probing this.
Changes since v2:
* The bugzilla URL is deprecated, bug reporting happens on gitlab now.
Update the messages we print to reflect this
* Also, take the opportunity to move FDO_BUG_URL out of i915_utils.c and
into i915_utils.h so that other places which print things that aren't
traditional errors but are worth filing bugs about, can actually use
it.

The whole point of using OUIs is so that we can recognize certain
devices and potentially apply quirks for them. Normally this should work
quite well, but there appears to be quite a number of laptop panels out
there that will fill the OUI but not the device ID. As such, for devices
like this I can't imagine it's a very good idea to try relying on OUIs
for applying quirks. As well, some laptop vendors have confirmed to us
that their panels have this exact issue.
So, let's introduce the ability to apply DP quirks based on EDID
identification. We reuse the same quirk bits for OUI-based quirks, so
that callers can simply check all possible quirks using
drm_dp_has_quirk().

KMS helpers available to drivers.
These simple-encoder helpers initialize an encoder with an empty

initializes a pre-allocated instance.

Most bridge drivers create a DRM connector to model the connector at the
output of the bridge. This model is historical and has worked pretty
well so far, but causes several issues:
- It prevents supporting more complex display pipelines where DRM
connector operations are split over multiple components. For instance a
pipeline with a bridge connected to the DDC signals to read EDID data,
and another one connected to the HPD signal to detect connection and
disconnection, will not be possible to support through this model.
- It requires every bridge driver to implement similar connector
handling code, resulting in code duplication.
- It assumes that a bridge will either be wired to a connector or to
another bridge, but doesn't support bridges that can be used in both
positions very well (although there is some ad-hoc support for this in
the analogix_dp bridge driver).
In order to solve these issues, ownership of the connector needs to be
moved to the display controller driver.
To avoid code duplication in display controller drivers, add a new
helper to create and manage a DRM connector backed by a chain of
bridges. All connector operations are delegating to the appropriate
bridge in the chain.

Extend the bridge API to allow disabling connector creation in bridge
drivers as a first step towards the new model. The new flags argument to
the bridge .attach() operation allows instructing the bridge driver to
skip creating a connector. Unconditionally set the new flags argument to
0 for now to keep the existing behaviour, and modify all existing bridge
drivers to return an error when connector creation is not requested as
they don't support this feature yet.

Unlike DP 1.2 edid corruption test, DP 1.4 requires to calculate
real CRC value of the last edid data block, and write it back.
Current edid CRC calculates routine adds the last CRC byte,

This behavior is not accurate; actually, we need to return
the actual CRC value when corruption is detected.

To help with the conversion, the timestamp calculation has been

This is the last exception to the general rule that we restore fbcon

drm_bridge_state is extended to describe the input and output bus
configurations. These bus configurations are exposed through the
drm_bus_cfg struct which encodes the configuration of a physical
bus between two components in an output pipeline, usually between
two bridges, an encoder and a bridge, or a bridge and a connector.
The bus configuration is stored in drm_bridge_state separately for
the input and output buses, as seen from the point of view of each
bridge. The bus configuration of a bridge output is usually identical
to the configuration of the next bridge's input, but may differ if
the signals are modified between the two bridges, for instance by an
inverter on the board. The input and output configurations of a
bridge may differ if the bridge modifies the signals internally,
for instance by performing format conversion, or*modifying signals
polarities.
Bus format negotiation is automated by the core, drivers just have
to implement the ->atomic_get_{output,input}_bus_fmts() hooks if they
want to take part to this negotiation. Negotiation happens in reverse
order, starting from the last element of the chain (the one directly
connected to the display) up to the first element of the chain (the one
connected to the encoder).
During this negotiation all supported formats are tested until we find
one that works, meaning that the formats array should be in decreasing
preference order (assuming the driver has a preference order).
Note that the bus format negotiation works even if some elements in the
chain don't implement the ->atomic_get_{output,input}_bus_fmts() hooks.
In that case, the core advertises only MEDIA_BUS_FMT_FIXED and lets
the previous bridge element decide what to do (most of the time, bridge
drivers will pick a default bus format or extract this piece of
information from somewhere else, like a FW property).

At the end of a commit, atomic helpers can generate a fake VBLANK event
automatically. Originally implemented for writeback connectors, the
functionality can be used by any driver and/or hardware without proper
VBLANK interrupt.
The patch updates the documentation to make this behaviour official:
settings struct drm_crtc_state.no_vblank to true enables automatic
generation of fake VBLANK events.
The new interface drm_dev_has_vblank() returns true if vblanking has
been initialized for a device, or false otherwise. Atomic helpers use
this function when initializing no_vblank in the CRTC state in
drm_atomic_helper_check_modeset(). If vblanking has been initialized
for a device, no_blank is disabled. Otherwise it's enabled. Hence,
atomic helpers will automatically send out fake VBLANK events with any
driver that did not initialize vblanking.

With the drm device model that we've slowly evolved over the past few
years master status essentially controls access to display resources,
and nothing else. Since that's a pure access permission check drivers
should have no need at all to track additional state on a per file

Aside: For cleanup and restoring kernel-internal clients the grand
plan is to move everyone over to drm_client and

Since drm_global_mutex is a true global mutex across devices, we don't
want to acquire it unless absolutely necessary. For maintaining the
device local open_count, we can use atomic operations on the counter
itself, except when making the transition to/from 0. Here, we tackle the
easy portion of delaying acquiring the drm_global_mutex for the final
release by using atomic_dec_and_mutex_lock(), leaving the global
serialisation across the device opens.

The file is not part of the global drm resource and can be released
prior to take the global mutex to drop the open_count (and potentially
close) the drm device. As the global mutex is indeed global, not only
within the device but across devices, a slow file release mechanism can
bottleneck the entire system.
However, inside drm_close_helper() there are a number of dev->driver
callbacks that take the drm_device as the first parameter... Worryingly
some of those callbacks may be (implicitly) depending on the global
mutex.
v2: Drop the debug message for the open-count, it's included with the
drm_file_free() debug message -- and for good measure make that up as
reading outside of the mutex.
v3: Separate the calling of the filp cleanup outside of
drm_global_mutex into a new drm_release_noglobal() hook, so that we can
phase the transition. drm/savage relies on the global mutex, and there
may be more, so be cautious.

[Why]
Noticed this while testing MST with the 4 ports MST hub from
StarTech.com. Sometimes can't light up monitors normally and get the
error message as 'sideband msg build failed'.
Look into aux transactions, found out that source sometimes will send
out another down request before receiving the down reply of the
previous down request. On the other hand, in drm_dp_get_one_sb_msg(),
current code doesn't handle the interleaved replies case. Hence, source
can't build up message completely and can't light up monitors.
[How]
For good compatibility, enforce source to send out one down request at a
time. Add a flag, is_waiting_for_dwn_reply, to determine if the source
can send out a down request immediately or not.
- Check the flag before calling process_single_down_tx_qlock to send out
a msg
- Set the flag when successfully send out a down request
- Clear the flag when successfully build up a down reply
- Clear the flag when find erros during sending out a down request
- Clear the flag when find errors during building up a down reply
- Clear the flag when timeout occurs during waiting for a down reply
- Use drm_dp_mst_kick_tx() to try to send another down request in queue
at the end of drm_dp_mst_wait_tx_reply() (attempt to send out messages
in queue when errors occur)

Not every platform needs quirk detection for panel orientation, so
split the drm_connector_init_panel_orientation_property into two
functions. One for platforms without the need for quirks, and the
other for platforms that need quirks.
Hans de Goede (changes in v2):
Rename the function from drm_connector_init_panel_orientation_property
to drm_connector_set_panel_orientation[_with_quirk] and pass in the
panel-orientation to set.
Beside the rename, also make the function set the passed in value
only once, if the value was set before (to a value other then
DRM_MODE_PANEL_ORIENTATION_UNKNOWN) make any further set calls a no-op.
This change is preparation for allowing the user to override the
panel-orientation for any connector from the kernel commandline.
When the panel-orientation is overridden this way, then we must ignore
the panel-orientation detection done by the driver.

TTM is an implementation detail of the VRAM helpers and therefore
shouldn't be exposed to the callers. There's only one correct value
for the BO device anyway, which is the one stored in the DRM device.
So remove struct ttm_bo_device from the VRAM-helper interface and
use the device's VRAM manager unconditionally. The GEM initializer
function fails if the VRAM manager has not been initialized.

The flag 'interruptible', which is passed to various functions,
is always set to be false. Remove it and hard-code the value.

drm_bridge_state is extended to describe the input and output bus
configurations.
