If userspace already dropped its own reference by closing the sw_sync
fence fd we might end up in a deadlock where
dma_fence_is_signaled_locked() will trigger the release of the fence and
thus try to hold the lock to remove the fence from the list.
dma_fence_is_signaled_locked() tries to release/free the fence and hold
the lock in the process.
We fix that by changing the order operation and clean up the list and
rb-tree first.

Up until recently sync_file were create to export a single dma-fence to
userspace, and so we could canabalise a bit insie dma-fence to mark
whether or not we had enable polling for the sync_file itself. However,
with the advent of syncobj, we do allow userspace to create multiple
sync_files for a single dma-fence. (Similarly, that the sw-sync
validation framework also started returning multiple sync-files wrapping
a single dma-fence for a syncpt also triggering the problem.)
This patch reverts my suggestion in commit e241655373
("dma-buf/sync_file: only enable fence signalling on poll()") to use a
single bit in the shared dma-fence and restores the sync_file->flags for
tracking the bits individually.

We only set the timestamp before we mark the fence as signaled. It is
done before to avoid observers having a window in which they may see the
fence as complete but no timestamp. Having it does incur a potential for
the timestamp to be written twice, and even for it to be corrupted if
the u64 write is not atomic. Instead use a new bit to record the
presence of the timestamp, and teach the readers to wait until it is set
if the fence is complete. There still remains a race where the timestamp
for the signaled fence may be shown before the fence is reported as
signaled, but that's a pre-existing error.

Constructing the name takes the majority of the time for allocating a
sync_file to wrap a fence, and the name is very rarely used (only via
the sync_file status user interface). To reduce the impact on the common
path (that of creating sync_file to pass around), defer the construction
of the name until it is first used.
v2: Update kerneldoc (kbuild test robot)
v3: sync_debug.c was peeking at the name
v4: Comment upon the potential race between two users of
sync_file_get_name() and claim that such a race is below the level of
notice. However, to prevent any future nuisance, use a global spinlock
to serialize the assignment of the name.
v5: Completely avoid the read/write race by only storing the name passed

In the current implementation, dma_fence_default_wait will always call

The dma_fence.error field (formerly known as dma_fence.status) is an
optional field that may be set by drivers before calling
dma_fence_signal(). The field can be used to indicate that the fence was
completed in err rather than with success, and is visible to other
consumers of the fence and to userspace via sync_file.
This patch renames the field from status to error so that its meaning is
hopefully more clear (and distinct from dma_fence_get_status() which is
a composite between the error state and signal state) and adds a helper
that validates the preconditions of when it is suitable to adjust the
error field.

As the fence->status is an optional field that may be set before
dma_fence_signal() is called to convey that the fence completed with an
error, we have to ensure that it is always set to zero on initialisation
so that the typical use (i.e. unset) always flags a successful completion.

seqlock after acquiring a reference to the fence. If the driver is
allocating fences from a SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU, or similar freelist, then
within an RCU grace period a fence may be freed and reallocated. The RCU

we have to inspect the reservation's seqlock to double check if the

When merging sync_files there is a case when we can end up with only one
fence in the merged sync_file: when all fences belong to the same
timeline.
So for this case a fence_array is not created instead we just assigned the
fence to sync_file->fence. Then we do not use the fences array anymore nor
does free it.
This patch frees the array.

When we merge several fences, if all of them are signaled already, we
still keep one of them. So instead of using add_fence(), which will not
increase the refcount of signaled fences, we should explicitly call
fence_get() for the fence we are keeping.
This patch fixes a kernel panic that can be triggered by creating a fence
that is expired (or increasing the timeline until it expires), then
creating a merged fence out of it, and deleting the merged fence. This
will make the original expired fence's refcount go to zero.

Rendering operations to the dma-buf are tracked implicitly via the
reservation_object (dmabuf->resv). This is used to allow poll() to
wait upon outstanding rendering (or just query the current status of
rendering). The dma-buf sync ioctl allows userspace to prepare the
dma-buf for CPU access, which should include waiting upon rendering.
(Some drivers may need to do more work to ensure that the dma-buf mmap
is coherent as well as complete.)

each sync_file. If only one fence is present we use a normal struct fence
but if there is more fences to be added to the sync_file a fence_array
is created.
This change cleans up sync_file a bit. We don't need to have sync_file_cb
array anymore. Instead, as we always have one fence, only one fence
callback is registered per sync_file.

function pointer cast in dma_buf_show() is wrong. dma_buf_describe() can

struct fence_array inherits from struct fence and carries a
collection of fences that needs to be waited together.
It is useful to translate a sync_file to a fence to remove the complexity
of dealing with sync_files on DRM drivers. So even if there are many
fences in the sync_file that needs to waited for a commit to happen,
they all get added to the fence_collection and passed for DRM use as
a standard struct fence.
That means that no changes needed to any driver besides supporting fences.
To avoid fence_array's fence allocates a new timeline if needed (when
combining fences from different timelines).
v2: Comments by Daniel Vetter:
- merge fence_collection_init() and fence_collection_add()
- only add callbacks at ->enable_signalling()
- remove fence_collection_put()
- check for type on to_fence_collection()
- adjust fence_is_later() and fence_later() to WARN_ON() if they
are used with collection fences.
v3: - Initialize fence_cb.node at fence init.

- return "unbound" on fence_collection_get_timeline_name()
- don't stop adding callbacks if one fails
- remove redundant !! on fence_collection_enable_signaling()
- remove redundant () on fence_collection_signaled

Fence contexts are created on the fly (for example) by the GPU scheduler used
in the amdgpu driver as a result of an userspace request. Because of this
userspace could in theory force a wrap around of the 32bit context number
if it doesn't behave well.
Avoid this by increasing the context number to 64bits. This way even when
userspace manages to allocate a billion contexts per second it takes more
than 500 years for the context number to wrap around.

Drivers, especially i915.ko, can fail during the initial migration of a
dma-buf for CPU access. However, the error code from the driver was not
being propagated back to ioctl and so userspace was blissfully ignorant
of the failure. Rendering corruption ensues.
Whilst fixing the ioctl to return the error code from
dma_buf_start_cpu_access(), also do the same for
dma_buf_end_cpu_access(). For most drivers, dma_buf_end_cpu_access()
cannot fail. i915.ko however, as most drivers would, wants to avoid being
uninterruptible (as would be required to guarrantee no failure when
flushing the buffer to the device). As userspace already has to handle
errors from the SYNC_IOCTL, take advantage of this to be able to restart
the syscall across signals.
This fixes a coherency issue for i915.ko as well as reducing the
uninterruptible hold upon its BKL, the struct_mutex.

The userspace might need some sort of cache coherency management e.g. when CPU
and GPU domains are being accessed through dma-buf at the same time. To
circumvent this problem there are begin/end coherency markers, that forward
directly to existing dma-buf device drivers vfunc hooks. Userspace can make use
of those markers through the DMA_BUF_IOCTL_SYNC ioctl. The sequence would be
used like following:
- mmap dma-buf fd
- for each drawing/upload cycle in CPU 1. SYNC_START ioctl, 2. read/write
to mmap area 3. SYNC_END ioctl. This can be repeated as often as you
want (with the new data being consumed by the GPU or say scanout device)
- munmap once you don't need the buffer any more

This type of fence can be used with hardware synchronization for simple
hardware that can block execution until the condition
(dma_buf[offset] - value) >= 0 has been met when WAIT_GEQUAL is used,
or (dma_buf[offset] != 0) has been met when WAIT_NONZERO is set.
A software fallback still has to be provided in case the fence is used
with a device that doesn't support this mechanism. It is useful to expose
this for graphics cards that have an op to support this.
Some cards like i915 can export those, but don't have an option to wait,

A fence can be attached to a buffer which is being filled or consumed
by hw, to allow userspace to pass the buffer without waiting to another
device. For example, userspace can call page_flip ioctl to display the
next frame of graphics after kicking the GPU but while the GPU is still
rendering. The display device sharing the buffer with the GPU would
attach a callback to get notified when the GPU's rendering-complete IRQ
fires, to update the scan-out address of the display, without having to
wake up userspace.
A driver must allocate a fence context for each execution ring that can
run in parallel. The function for this takes an argument with how many
contexts to allocate:
+ fence_context_alloc()
A fence is transient, one-shot deal. It is allocated and attached
to one or more dma-buf's. When the one that attached it is done, with
the pending operation, it can signal the fence:
+ fence_signal()
To have a rough approximation whether a fence is fired, call:
+ fence_is_signaled()
The dma-buf-mgr handles tracking, and waiting on, the fences associated
with a dma-buf.
The one pending on the fence can add an async callback:
+ fence_add_callback()
The callback can optionally be cancelled with:
+ fence_remove_callback()
To wait synchronously, optionally with a timeout:
+ fence_wait()
+ fence_wait_timeout()
When emitting a fence, call:
+ trace_fence_emit()
To annotate that a fence is blocking on another fence, call:
+ trace_fence_annotate_wait_on(fence, on_fence)
A default software-only implementation is provided, which can be used
by drivers attaching a fence to a buffer when they have no other means
for hw sync. But a memory backed fence is also envisioned, because it
is common that GPU's can write to, or poll on some memory location for
synchronization. For example:
fence = custom_get_fence(...);
if ((seqno_fence = to_seqno_fence(fence)) != NULL) {
dma_buf *fence_buf = seqno_fence->sync_buf;
get_dma_buf(fence_buf);
... tell the hw the memory location to wait ...
custom_wait_on(fence_buf, seqno_fence->seqno_ofs, fence->seqno);
} else {
/* fall-back to sw sync * /
fence_add_callback(fence, my_cb);
}
On SoC platforms, if some other hw mechanism is provided for synchronizing
between IP blocks, it could be supported as an alternate implementation
with it's own fence ops in a similar way.
enable_signaling callback is used to provide sw signaling in case a cpu
waiter is requested or no compatible hardware signaling could be used.
The intention is to provide a userspace interface (presumably via eventfd)
later, to be used in conjunction with dma-buf's mmap support for sw access
to buffers (or for userspace apps that would prefer to do their own
synchronization).
v1: Original
v2: After discussion w/ danvet and mlankhorst on #dri-devel, we decided
that dma-fence didn't need to care about the sw->hw signaling path
(it can be handled same as sw->sw case), and therefore the fence->ops
can be simplified and more handled in the core. So remove the signal,
add_callback, cancel_callback, and wait ops, and replace with a simple
enable_signaling() op which can be used to inform a fence supporting
hw->hw signaling that one or more devices which do not support hw
signaling are waiting (and therefore it should enable an irq or do
whatever is necessary in order that the CPU is notified when the
fence is passed).
v3: Fix locking fail in attach_fence() and get_fence()
v4: Remove tie-in w/ dma-buf.. after discussion w/ danvet and mlankorst
we decided that we need to be able to attach one fence to N dma-buf's,
so using the list_head in dma-fence struct would be problematic.
v5: [ Maarten Lankhorst ] Updated for dma-bikeshed-fence and dma-buf-manager.
v6: [ Maarten Lankhorst ] I removed dma_fence_cancel_callback and some comments
about checking if fence fired or not. This is broken by design.
waitqueue_active during destruction is now fatal, since the signaller
should be holding a reference in enable_signalling until it signalled
the fence. Pass the original dma_fence_cb along, and call __remove_wait
in the dma_fence_callback handler, so that no cleanup needs to be
performed.
v7: [ Maarten Lankhorst ] Set cb->func and only enable sw signaling if
fence wasn't signaled yet, for example for hardware fences that may
choose to signal blindly.
v8: [ Maarten Lankhorst ] Tons of tiny fixes, moved __dma_fence_init to
header and fixed include mess. dma-fence.h now includes dma-buf.h
All members are now initialized, so kmalloc can be used for
allocating a dma-fence. More documentation added.
v9: Change compiler bitfields to flags, change return type of
enable_signaling to bool. Rework dma_fence_wait. Added
dma_fence_is_signaled and dma_fence_wait_timeout.
s/dma// and change exports to non GPL. Added fence_is_signaled and
fence_enable_sw_signaling calls, add ability to override default
wait operation.
v10: remove event_queue, use a custom list, export try_to_wake_up from
scheduler. Remove fence lock and use a global spinlock instead,
this should hopefully remove all the locking headaches I was having
on trying to implement this. enable_signaling is called with this
lock held.
v11:
Use atomic ops for flags, lifting the need for some spin_lock_irqsaves.
However I kept the guarantee that after fence_signal returns, it is
guaranteed that enable_signaling has either been called to completion,
or will not be called any more.
Add contexts and seqno to base fence implementation. This allows you
to wait for less fences, by testing for seqno + signaled, and then only
wait on the later fence.
Add FENCE_TRACE, FENCE_WARN, and FENCE_ERR. This makes debugging easier.
An CONFIG_DEBUG_FENCE will be added to turn off the FENCE_TRACE
spam, and another runtime option can turn it off at runtime.
v12:
Add CONFIG_FENCE_TRACE. Add missing documentation for the fence->context
and fence->seqno members.
v13:
Fixup CONFIG_FENCE_TRACE kconfig description.
Move fence_context_alloc to fence.
Simplify fence_later.
Kill priv member to fence_cb.
v14:
Remove priv argument from fence_add_callback, oops!
v15:
Remove priv from documentation.
Explicitly include linux/atomic.h.
v16:
Add trace events.
Import changes required by android syncpoints.
v17:
Use wake_up_state instead of try_to_wake_up. (Colin Cross)
Fix up commit description for seqno_fence. (Rob Clark)
v18:
Rename release_fence to fence_release.
Move to drivers/dma-buf/.
Rename __fence_is_signaled and __fence_signal to *_locked.
Rename __fence_init to fence_init.
Make fence_default_wait return a signed long, and fix wait ops too.
