Auto-loading of the Marvell DSA driver has stopped working with recent
kernels. This seems to be due to the change of binding for DSA devices,
moving them from the platform bus to the MDIO bus.
In order for module auto-loading to work, we need to provide a MODALIAS
string in the uevent file for the device. However, the device core does
not automatically provide this, and needs each bus_type to implement a
uevent method to generate these strings. The MDIO bus does not provide
such a method, so no MODALIAS string is provided:
.# cat /sys/bus/mdio_bus/devices/f1072004.mdio-mii\:04/uevent
DRIVER=mv88e6085
OF_NAME=switch
OF_FULLNAME=/soc/internal-regs/mdio@72004/switch@4
OF_COMPATIBLE_0=marvell,mv88e6085
OF_COMPATIBLE_N=1
In the case of OF-based devices, the solution is easy -
of_device_uevent_modalias() does the work for us. After this is done,
the uevent file looks like this:
.# cat /sys/bus/mdio_bus/devices/f1072004.mdio-mii\:04/uevent
DRIVER=mv88e6085
OF_NAME=switch
OF_FULLNAME=/soc/internal-regs/mdio@72004/switch@4
OF_COMPATIBLE_0=marvell,mv88e6085
OF_COMPATIBLE_N=1
MODALIAS=of:NswitchT<NULL>Cmarvell,mv88e6085

There is a potential unnecessary refcount decrement on error path of
put_device(&pb->mii_bus->dev), as it is possible to avoid the
of_mdio_find_bus() call if mux_bus is specified by the calling function.
The same put_device() is not called in the error path if the
devm_kzalloc of pb fails. This caused the variable used in the
put_device() to be changed, as the pb pointer was obviously not set up.
There is an unnecessary of_node_get() on child_bus_node if the
of_mdiobus_register() is successful, as the
for_each_available_child_of_node() automatically increments this.
Thus the refcount on this node will always be +1 more than it should be.
There is no of_node_put() on child_bus_node if the of_mdiobus_register()
call fails.
Finally, it is lacking devm_kfree() of pb in the error path. While this
might not be technically necessary, it was present in other parts of the
function. So, I am adding it where necessary to make it uniform.

Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
The Ethernet link on an interrupt driven PHY was not coming up if the Ethernet
cable was plugged before the Ethernet interface was brought up.
The patch trigger PHY state machine to update link state if PHY was requested to
do auto-negotiation and auto-negotiation complete flag already set.
During power-up cycle the PHY do auto-negotiation, generate interrupt and set
auto-negotiation complete flag. Interrupt is handled by PHY state machine but
doesn't update link state because PHY is in PHY_READY state. After some time
MAC bring up, start and request PHY to do auto-negotiation. If there are no new
settings to advertise genphy_config_aneg() doesn't start PHY auto-negotiation.
PHY continue to stay in auto-negotiation complete state and doesn't fire
interrupt. At the same time PHY state machine expect that PHY started
auto-negotiation and is waiting for interrupt from PHY and it won't get it.

Some boards [1] leave the PHYs at an invalid state
during system power-up or reset thus causing unreliability
issues with the PHY which manifests as PHY not being detected
or link not functional. To fix this, these PHYs need to be RESET
via a GPIO connected to the PHY's RESET pin.
Some boards have a single GPIO controlling the PHY RESET pin of all
PHYs on the bus whereas some others have separate GPIOs controlling
individual PHY RESETs.
In both cases, the RESET de-assertion cannot be done in the PHY driver
as the PHY will not probe till its reset is de-asserted.

phylib has some undesirable behaviour when forcing a link mode through
ethtool. phylib uses this code:
idx = phy_find_valid(phy_find_setting(phydev->speed, phydev->duplex),
features);
to find an index in the settings table. phy_find_setting() starts at
index 0, and scans upwards looking for an exact speed and duplex match.
When it doesn't find it, it returns MAX_NUM_SETTINGS - 1, which is
10baseT-Half duplex.
phy_find_valid() then scans from the point (and effectively only checks
one entry) before bailing out, returning MAX_NUM_SETTINGS - 1.
phy_sanitize_settings() then sets ->speed to SPEED_10 and ->duplex to
DUPLEX_HALF whether or not 10baseT-Half is supported or not. This goes
against all the comments against these functions, and 10baseT-Half may
not even be supported by the hardware.
Rework these functions, introducing a new method of scanning the table.
There are two modes of lookup that phylib wants: exact, and inexact.
- in exact mode, we return either an exact match or failure
- in inexact mode, we return an exact match if it exists, a match at
the highest speed that is not greater than the requested speed
(ignoring duplex), or failing that, the lowest supported speed, or
failure.
The biggest difference is that we always check whether the entry is
supported before further consideration, so all unsupported entries are
not considered as candidates.
This results in arguably saner behaviour, better matches the comments,
and is probably what users would expect.
This becomes important as ethernet speeds increase, PHYs exist which do
not support the 10Mbit speeds, and half-duplex is likely to become
obsolete - it's already not even an option on 10Gbit and faster links.

fundamentally restricts it to only a few modes. For example, EEE works
in SGMII mode with the Marvell 88E1512.
Rather than just adding SGMII mode to the list, Florian suggests
removing the list of interface modes entirely:
It actually sounds like we should just kill the check entirely,
it does not appear that any of the interface mode would not

we support is MII, and even there it's quite possible to support

mdio-boardinfo contains code that is helpful for platforms to register
specific MDIO bus devices independent of how CONFIG_MDIO_DEVICE or
CONFIG_PHYLIB will be selected (modular or built-in). In order to make
that possible, let's do the following:
- descend into drivers/net/phy/ unconditionally
- make mdiobus_setup_mdiodev_from_board_info() take a callback argument
which allows us not to expose the internal MDIO board info list and
mutex, yet maintain the logic within the same file
- relocate the code that creates a MDIO device into
drivers/net/phy/mdio_bus.c
- build mdio-boardinfo.o into the kernel as soon as MDIO_DEVICE is
defined (y or m)

Break this loop by taking dsa.h out of netdevice.h, add a forward

No longer having dsa.h in netdevice.h means the includes in dsa.h no

Introduce a new configuration symbol: MDIO_DEVICE which allows building
the MDIO devices and bus code, without pulling in the entire Ethernet
PHY library and devices code.
PHYLIB nows select MDIO_DEVICE and the relevant Makefile files are
updated to reflect that.
When MDIO_DEVICE (MDIO bus/device only) is selected, but not PHYLIB, we
have mdio-bus.ko as a loadable module, and it does not have a
module_exit() function because the safety of removing a bus class is
unclear.
When both MDIO_DEVICE and PHYLIB are enabled, we need to assemble
everything into a common loadable module: libphy.ko because of nasty

To provide normal operation of the PHY, one needs not only to explicitly

To do that the STRAP_STS1 (0x006E) register must be read and RESERVED bit

drivers/net/ethernet/apm/xgene/xgene_enet_main.c:33:36: warning: tentative array definition assumed to have one element
The declarations for the mdio driver are even in a header file, so they
cause duplicate definitions of the tables for each file that includes
them.
This removes all four forward declarations and moves the actual
definitions up a little, so they are in front of their first user. For
the OF match tables, this means having to remove the #ifdef around them,
and passing the actual structure into of_match_device(). This has no
effect on the generated object code though, as the of_match_device
function has an empty stub that does not evaluate its argument, and
the symbol gets dropped either way.

When an Marvell 88E1512 PHY is connected to a nic in SGMII mode, the
fiber page is used for the SGMII host-side connection. The PHY driver
notices that SUPPORTED_FIBRE is set, so it tries reading the fiber page
for the link status, and ends up reading the MAC-side status instead of
the outgoing (copper) link. This leads to incorrect results reported
via ethtool.
If the PHY is connected via SGMII to the host, ignore the fiber page.
However, continue to allow the existing power management code to
suspend and resume the fiber page.

While in RUNNING state, phy_state_machine() checks for link changes by
comparing phydev->link before and after calling phy_read_status().
This works as long as it is guaranteed that phydev->link is never
changed outside the phy_state_machine().
If in some setups this happens, it causes the state machine to miss
a link loss and remain RUNNING despite phydev->link being 0.
This has been observed running a dsa setup with a process continuously
polling the link states over ethtool each second (SNMPD RFC-1213
agent). Disconnecting the link on a phy followed by a ETHTOOL_GSET
causes dsa_slave_get_settings() / dsa_slave_get_link_ksettings() to
call phy_read_status() and with that modify the link status - and
with that bricking the phy state machine.
This patch adds a fail-safe check while in RUNNING, which causes to
move to CHANGELINK when the link is gone and we are still RUNNING.

For proper IRQ generation by DP83867 phy the INT/PWDN pin has to be
programmed as an interrupt output instead of a Powerdown input in
Configuration Register 3 (CFG3), Address 0x001E, bit 7 INT_OE = 1. The
current driver doesn't do this and as result IRQs will not be generated by

Hence, fix IRQ generation by properly configuring CFG3.INT_OE bit and
ensure that Link Status Change (LINK_STATUS_CHNG_INT) and Auto-Negotiation

The patches regarding eee-broken-modes was merged before all people
involved could find an agreement on the best way to move forward.
While we agreed on having a DT property to mark particular modes as broken,
the value used for eee-broken-modes mapped the phy register in very direct
way. Because of this, the concern is that it could be used to implement
configuration policies instead of describing a broken HW.
In the end, having a boolean property for each mode seems to be preferred
over one bit field value mapping the register (too) directly.

Instead of having individual PHY drivers set the SUPPORTED_Pause and
SUPPORTED_Asym_Pause flags, phylib itself should set those flags,
unless there is a hardware erratum or other special case. During
autonegotiation, the PHYs will determine whether to enable pause
frame support.
Pause frames are a feature that is supported by the MAC. It is the MAC
that generates the frames and that processes them. The PHY can only be
configured to allow them to pass through.
This commit also effectively reverts the recently applied c7a61319
("net: phy: dp83848: Support ethernet pause frames").
So the new process is:
1) Unless the PHY driver overrides it, phylib sets the SUPPORTED_Pause
and SUPPORTED_AsymPause bits in phydev->supported. This indicates that
the PHY supports pause frames.
2) The MAC driver checks phydev->supported before it calls phy_start().
If (SUPPORTED_Pause | SUPPORTED_AsymPause) is set, then the MAC driver
sets those bits in phydev->advertising, if it wants to enable pause
frame support.
3) When the link state changes, the MAC driver checks phydev->pause and
phydev->asym_pause, If the bits are set, then it enables the corresponding
features in the MAC. The algorithm is:
if (phydev->pause)
The MAC should be programmed to receive and honor
pause frames it receives, i.e. enable receive flow control.
if (phydev->pause != phydev->asym_pause)
The MAC should be programmed to transmit pause
frames when needed, i.e. enable transmit flow control.

Commit 3e3aaf6494 ("phy: fix mdiobus module safety") fixed the way we
dealt with MDIO bus module reference count, but sort of introduced a
regression in that, if an Ethernet driver registers its own MDIO bus
driver, as is common, we will end up with the Ethernet driver's
module->refnct set to 1, thus preventing this driver from any removal.
Fix this by comparing the network device's device driver owner against
the MDIO bus driver owner, and only if they are different, increment the
MDIO bus module refcount.

2) In XGBE we had a "CONFIG_PM" --> "CONFIG_PM_SLEEP" fix
overlapping with a reorganization of the driver to support

3) In 'net' we had several probe error path bug fixes to the

4) The cls_flower classifier obtained a helper function in

5) In mlx4, a revert bug fix in 'net' overlapped with some
unrelated changes in 'net-next'.
6) In geneve, a stale header pointer after pskb_expand_head()

the same code in 'net-next'. Since the 'net-next' code no
longer had the bug in question, there was nothing to do

When connecting an MDI port to an MDI-X port a straight through

The old logic always enabled the TX-delay when the phy-mode was set to
PHY_INTERFACE_MODE_RGMII. There are dedicated phy-modes which tell the
PHY driver to enable the RX and/or TX delays:
- PHY_INTERFACE_MODE_RGMII should disable the RX and TX delay in the
PHY (if required, the MAC should add the delays in this case)
- PHY_INTERFACE_MODE_RGMII_ID should enable RX and TX delay in the PHY
- PHY_INTERFACE_MODE_RGMII_TXID should enable the TX delay in the PHY
- PHY_INTERFACE_MODE_RGMII_RXID should enable the RX delay in the PHY
(currently not supported by RTL8211F)
With this patch we enable the TX delay for PHY_INTERFACE_MODE_RGMII_ID
and PHY_INTERFACE_MODE_RGMII_TXID.
Additionally we now explicity disable the TX-delay, which seems to be
enabled automatically after a hard-reset of the PHY (by triggering it's
reset pin) to get a consistent state (as defined by the phy-mode).
This fixes a compatibility problem with some SoCs where the TX-delay was
also added by the MAC. With the TX-delay being applied twice the TX
clock was off and TX traffic was broken or very slow (<10Mbit/s) on
1000Mbit/s links.

All conflicts were simple overlapping changes except perhaps
for the Thunder driver.
That driver has a change_mtu method explicitly for sending
a message to the hardware. If that fails it returns an
error.
Normally a driver doesn't need an ndo_change_mtu method becuase those
are usually just range changes, which are now handled generically.
But since this extra operation is needed in the Thunder driver, it has
to stay.
However, if the message send fails we have to restore the original
MTU before the change because the entire call chain expects that if
an error is thrown by ndo_change_mtu then the MTU did not change.
Therefore code is added to nicvf_change_mtu to remember the original
MTU, and to restore it upon nicvf_update_hw_max_frs() failue.

In SGMII mode, we observed an autonegotiation issue
after power-down-up cycles where the copper side
reports successful link establishment but the
SGMII side's link is down.
This happened in a setup where the at8031 is
connected over SGMII to a eTSEC (fsl gianfar),
but so far could not be reproduced with other
Ethernet device / driver combinations.
This commit adds a wrapper function for at8031
that in case of operating in SGMII mode double
checks SGMII link state when generic aneg_done()
succeeds. It prints a warning on failure but
intentionally does not try to recover from this
state. As a result, if you ever see a warning
'803x_aneg_done: SGMII link is not ok' you will
end up having an Ethernet link up but won't get
any data through. This should not happen, if it
does, please contact the module maintainer.

Create an option CONFIG_LED_TRIGGER_PHY (default n), which will create a
set of led triggers for each instantiated PHY device. There is one LED
trigger per link-speed, per-phy.
The triggers are registered during phy_attach and unregistered during
phy_detach.
This allows for a user to configure their system to allow a set of LEDs
not controlled by the phy to represent link state changes on the phy.
LEDS controlled by the phy are unaffected.
For example, we have a board where some of the leds in the
RJ45 socket are controlled by the phy, but others are not. Using the
triggers provided by this patch the leds not controlled by the phy can
be configured to show the current speed of the ethernet connection. The

The phy_start() is used to indicate the PHY is now ready to do its
work. The state is changed, normally to PHY_UP which means that both
the MAC and the PHY are ready.
If the phy driver is using polling, when the next poll happens, the
state machine notices the PHY is now in PHY_UP, and kicks off
auto-negotiation, if needed.
If however, the PHY is using interrupts, there is no polling. The phy
is stuck in PHY_UP until the next interrupt comes along. And there is
no reason for the PHY to interrupt.
Have phy_start() schedule the state machine to run, which both speeds
up the polling use case, and makes the interrupt use case actually
work.
This problems exists whenever there is a state change which will not
cause an interrupt. Trigger the state machine in these cases,
e.g. phy_error().

Edge-rate:
As system and networking speeds increase, a signal's output transition,
also know as the edge rate or slew rate (V/ns), takes on greater importance
because high-speed signals come with a price. That price is an assortment of
interference problems like ringing on the line, signal overshoot and
undershoot, extended signal settling times, crosstalk noise, transmission
line reflections, false signal detection by the receiving device and
electromagnetic interference (EMI) -- all of which can negate the potential
gains designers are seeking when they try to increase system speeds through
the use of higher performance logic devices. The fact is, faster signaling
edge rates can cause a higher level of electrical noise or other type of
interference that can actually lead to slower line speeds and lower maximum
system frequencies. This parameter allow the board designers to change the
driving strange, and thereby change the EMI behavioral.
Edge-rate parameters (vddmac, edge-slowdown) get from Device Tree.

We detected some problems using the smsc lan8720a in combination with
i.MX28 and tracked this down to commit 2100968666 ("net: phy: smsc: move
smsc_phy_config_init reset part in a soft_reset function")
With 2100968666 the generic soft reset is replaced by a specific function
which handles power down state correctly. But additionally the soft reset
itself got conditional and is therefore also only performed if the phy is
in power down state.
This patch keeps the conditional wake up from power down, but
re-introduces the unconditional soft reset using the generic soft reset
function.
It was tested on linux-4.1.25 and linux-4.7.0-rc2.

Since e7f4dc3536 ("mdio: Move allocation of interrupts into core"),
platforms which call fixed_phy_add() before fixed_mdio_bus_init() is
called (for example, because the platform code and the fixed_phy driver
use the same initcall level) crash in fixed_phy_add() since the
->mii_bus is not allocated.
Also since e7f4dc3536, these interrupts are initalized to polling by
default. The few (old) platforms which directly use fixed_phy_add()
from their platform code all pass PHY_POLL for the irq argument, so we
can keep these platforms not crashing by simply not attempting to set
the irq if PHY_POLL is passed.
Also, even if problems have not been reported on more modern platforms
which used fixed_phy_register() from drivers' probe functions, we return
-EPROBE_DEFER if the MDIO bus is not yet registered so that the probe is
retried later.

If you compile without OF_MDIO support in an RGMII configuration, we fail
to configure the dp83867 phy today by writing garbage into its configuration
registers.
On the other hand if you do compile with OF_MDIO and the phy gets loaded via
device tree, you have to have the properties set in the device tree, otherwise
we fail to load the driver and don't even attach the generic phy driver to
the interface anymore.
To make things slightly more consistent, make the rgmii configuration properties
optional and allow a user to omit them in their device tree.

When CONFIG_OF_MDIO is configured as module, the #define for it really
is CONFIG_OF_MDIO_MODULE, not CONFIG_OF_MDIO. So if we are compiling it
as module, the dp83867 doesn't see that OF_MDIO was selected and doesn't
read the dt rgmii parameters.
The fix is simple: Use IS_ENABLED(). It checks for both - module as well
as compiled in code.

If phy was suspended and is starting, current driver always enable
phy's interrupts, if phy works in polling, phy can raise unexpected
interrupt which will not be handled, the interrupt will block system
enter suspend again. So interrupts should only be re-enabled if phy

Since commit b74766a0a0 ("phylib: don't return NULL
from get_phy_device()") in linux-next, phy_get_device() will return
ERR_PTR(-ENODEV) instead of NULL if the PHY device ID is all ones.
This causes problem with stmmac driver and likely some other drivers
which call mdiobus_register(). I triggered this bug on SoCFPGA MCVEVK
board with linux-next 20160427 and 20160428. In case of the stmmac, if
there is no PHY node specified in the DT for the stmmac block, the stmmac
driver ( drivers/net/ethernet/stmicro/stmmac/stmmac_mdio.c function
stmmac_mdio_register() ) will call mdiobus_register() , which will
register the MDIO bus and probe for the PHY.
The mdiobus_register() resp. __mdiobus_register() iterates over all of
the addresses on the MDIO bus and calls mdiobus_scan() for each of them,
which invokes get_phy_device(). Before the aforementioned patch, the
mdiobus_scan() would return NULL if no PHY was found on a given address
and mdiobus_register() would continue and try the next PHY address. Now,
mdiobus_scan() returns ERR_PTR(-ENODEV), which is caught by the
'if (IS_ERR(phydev))' condition and the loop exits immediately if the
PHY address does not contain PHY.
Repair this by explicitly checking for the ERR_PTR(-ENODEV) and if this
error comes around, continue with the next PHY address.

work-around for a hardware bug on the AT8030. However, the work-around

Function at803x_link_change_notify() checks to make sure that it only
resets the PHY on the 8030, but it makes more sense to not call that
