This patch introduces a new sysctl option to make IPv4 Address Scoping
configurable <draft-stewart-tsvwg-sctp-ipv4-00.txt>.
In networking environments where DNAT rules in iptables prerouting
chains convert destination IP's to link-local/private IP addresses,
SCTP connections fail to establish as the INIT chunk is dropped by the
kernel due to address scope match failure.
For example to support overlapping IP addresses (same IP address with
different vlan id) a Layer-5 application listens on link local IP's,
and there is a DNAT rule that maps the destination IP to a link local
IP. Such applications never get the SCTP INIT if the address-scoping
draft is strictly followed.
This sysctl configuration allows SCTP to function in such
unconventional networking environments.
Sysctl options:
0 - Disable IPv4 address scoping draft altogether
1 - Enable IPv4 address scoping (default, current behavior)
2 - Enable address scoping but allow IPv4 private addresses in init/init-ack
3 - Enable address scoping but allow IPv4 link local address in init/init-ack

We used to perform 2 routing lookups for a new transport: one
just for path mtu detection, and one to actually route to destination
and path mtu update when sending a packet. There is no point in doing
both of them, especially since the first one just for path mtu doesn't
take into account source address and sometimes gives the wrong route,
causing path mtu updates anyway.
We now do just the one call to do both route to destination and get
path mtu updates.

We had a bug that we never stored the user-defined value for
MAXSEG when setting the value on an association. Thus future
PMTU events ended up re-writing the frag point and increasing
it past user limit. Additionally, when setting the option on
the socket/endpoint, we effect all current associations, which
is against spec.
Now, we store the user 'maxseg' value along with the computed
'frag_point'. We inherit 'maxseg' from the socket at association
creation and use it as an upper limit for 'frag_point' when its
set.

SCTP will delay the last part of a large write due to NAGLE, if that
part is smaller then MTU. Since we are doing large writes, we might
as well send the last portion now instead of waiting untill the next
large write happens. The small portion will be sent as is regardless,
so it's better to not delay it.
This is a result of much discussions with Wei Yongjun <yjwei@cn.fujitsu.com>
and Doug Graham <dgraham@nortel.com>. Many thanks go out to them.

The decision to delay due to Nagle should be based on the path mtu
and future packet size. We currently incorrectly base it on
'frag_point' which is the SCTP DATA segment size, and also we do
not count DATA chunk header overhead in the computation. This
actuall allows situations where a user can set low 'frag_point',
and then send small messages without delay.

We currently set a_rwnd to 0 when faking a SACK from SHUTDOWN.
This results in an hung association if the remote only uses
SHUTDOWNs (which it's allowed to do) to acknowlege DATA when
closing. The reason for that is that we simply honor the a_rwnd
from the sack, but since we faked it to be 0, we enter 0-window
probing. The fix is to use the peers old rwnd and add our flight
size to it.

SCTP has a problem that when small chunks are used, it is possible
to exhaust the receiver buffer without fully closing receive window.
This happens due to all overhead that we have account for with small
messages. To fix this, when receive buffer is exceeded, we'll drop
the window to 0 and save the 'drop' portion. When application starts
reading data and freeing up recevie buffer space, we'll wait until
we've reached the 'drop' window and then add back this 'drop' one
mtu at a time. This worked well in testing and under stress produced
rather even recovery.

SCTP RFC 4960 states that unacknowledged HEARTBEATS count as
errors agains a given transport or endpoint. As such, we
should increment the error counts for only for unacknowledged
HB, otherwise we detect failure too soon. This goes for both
the overall error count and the path error count.
Now, there is a difference in how the detection is done
between the two. The path error detection is done after
the increment, so to detect it properly, we actually need
to exceed the path threshold. The overall error detection
is done _BEFORE_ the increment. Thus to detect the failure,
it's enough for the error count to match the threshold.
This is why all the state functions use '>=' to detect failure,
while path detection uses '>'.
Thanks goes to Chunbo Luo <chunbo.luo@windriver.com> who first
proposed patches to fix this issue and made me re-read the spec
and the code to figure out how this cruft really works.

The receiver of the HEARTBEAT should respond with a HEARTBEAT ACK
that contains the Heartbeat Information field copied from the
received HEARTBEAT chunk. So the received HEARTBEAT-ACK chunk
must have a length of:
sizeof(sctp_chunkhdr_t) + sizeof(sctp_sender_hb_info_t)
A badly formatted HB-ACK chunk, it is possible that we may access
invalid memory. We should really make sure that the chunk format
is what we expect, before attempting to touch the data.

Currenlty, sctp breaks up user messages into fragments and
sends each fragment to the lower layer by itself. This means
that for each fragment we go all the way down the stack
and back up. This also discourages bundling of multiple
fragments when they can fit into a sigle packet (ex: due
to user setting a low fragmentation threashold).
We introduce a new command SCTP_CMD_SND_MSG and hand the
whole message down state machine. The state machine and
the side-effect parser will cork the queue, add all chunks
from the message to the queue, and then un-cork the queue
thus causing the chunks to get transmitted.

If the association has a SACK timer pending and now DATA queued
to be send, we'll try to bundle the SACK with the next application send.

We are now trying to bundle SACKs when we have outbound
DATA to send. However, there are situations where this
outbound DATA will not be sent (due to congestion or
available window). In such cases it's ok to wait for the
timer to expire. This patch refactors the sending code
so that betfore attempting to bundle the SACK we check
to see if the DATA will actually be transmitted.

Since an application may specify the maximum SCTP fragment size
that all data should be fragmented to, we need to fix how
we do segmentation. Right now, if a user specifies a small
fragment size, the segment size can go negative in the presence
of AUTH or COOKIE_ECHO bundling.
What we need to do is track the largest possbile DATA chunk that
can fit into the mtu. Then if the fragment size specified is
bigger then this maximum length, we'll shrink it down. Otherwise,
we just use the smaller segment size without changing it further.

If a socket has a lot of association that are in the process of
of being closed/aborted, it is possible for a remote to establish
new associations during the time period that the old ones are shutting
down. If this was a result of a close() call, there will be no socket
and will cause a memory leak. We'll prevent this by setting the
socket state to CLOSING and disallow new associations when in this state.

This patch corrects the conditions under which a SACK will be piggybacked
on a DATA packet. The previous condition was incorrect due to a
misinterpretation of RFC 4960 and/or RFC 2960. Specifically, the
following paragraph from section 6.2 had not been implemented correctly:
Before an endpoint transmits a DATA chunk, if any received DATA
chunks have not been acknowledged (e.g., due to delayed ack), the
sender should create a SACK and bundle it with the outbound DATA
chunk, as long as the size of the final SCTP packet does not exceed
the current MTU. See Section 6.2.
When about to send a DATA chunk, the code now checks to see if the SACK
timer is running. If it is, we know we have a SACK to send to the
peer, so we append the SACK (assuming available space in the packet)
and turn off the timer. For a simple request-response scenario, this
will result in the SACK being bundled with the response, meaning the
the SACK is received quickly by the client, and also meaning that no
separate SACK packet needs to be sent by the server to acknowledge the
request. Prior to this patch, a separate SACK packet would have been
sent by the server SCTP only after its delayed-ACK timer had expired
(usually 200ms). This is wasteful of bandwidth, and can also have a
major negative impact on performance due the interaction of delayed ACKs
with the Nagle algorithm.

Setting ->owner as done currently (pde->owner = THIS_MODULE) is racy
as correctly noted at bug #12454. Someone can lookup entry with NULL
->owner, thus not pinning enything, and release it later resulting
in module refcount underflow.
We can keep ->owner and supply it at registration time like ->proc_fops
and ->data.
But this leaves ->owner as easy-manipulative field (just one C assignment)
and somebody will forget to unpin previous/pin current module when
switching ->owner. ->proc_fops is declared as "const" which should give
some thoughts.
->read_proc/->write_proc were just fixed to not require ->owner for
protection.
rmmod'ed directories will be empty and return "." and ".." -- no harm.
And directories with tricky enough readdir and lookup shouldn't be modular.
We definitely don't want such modular code.
Removing ->owner will also make PDE smaller.
So, let's nuke it.

If the user has not set one - assume they don't want to sent the param

Rationale - Currently the IANA defines zero as reserved - and

Computation of SCTP checksums significantly affects the performance of
SCTP. For example, using two dual-Opteron 246 connected using a Gbe
network, it was not possible to achieve more than ~730 Mbps, compared to
941 Mbps after disabling SCTP checksums.
Unfortunately, SCTP checksum offloading in NICs is not commonly
available (yet).
By default, checksums are still enabled, of course.

There is a race between sctp_rcv() and sctp_accept() where we
have moved the association from the listening socket to the
accepted socket, but sctp_rcv() processing cached the old
socket and continues to use it.
The easy solution is to check for the socket mismatch once we've
grabed the socket lock. If we hit a mis-match, that means
that were are currently holding the lock on the listening socket,
but the association is refrencing a newly accepted socket. We need
to drop the lock on the old socket and grab the lock on the new one.
A more proper solution might be to create accepted sockets when
the new association is established, similar to TCP. That would
eliminate the race for 1-to-1 style sockets, but it would still
existing for 1-to-many sockets where a user wished to peeloff an
association. For now, we'll live with this easy solution as
it addresses the problem.

Recent changes to the retransmit code exposed a long standing
bug where it was possible for a chunk to be time stamped
after the retransmit timer was reset. This caused a rare
situation where the retrnamist timer has expired, but
nothing was marked for retrnasmission because all of
timesamps on data were less then 1 rto ago. As result,
the timer was never restarted since nothing was retransmitted,
and this resulted in a hung association that did couldn't
complete the data transfer. The solution is to timestamp
the chunk when it's added to the packet for transmission
purposes. After the packet is trsnmitted the rtx timer
is restarted. This guarantees that when the timer expires,
there will be data to retransmit.

The tsn map currently use is 4K large and is stuck inside
the sctp_association structure making memory references REALLY
expensive. What we really need is at most 4K worth of bits
so the biggest map we would have is 512 bytes. Also, the
map is only really usefull when we have gaps to store and
report. As such, starting with minimal map of say 32 TSNs (bits)
should be enough for normal low-loss operations. We can grow
the map by some multiple of 32 along with some extra room any
time we receive the TSN which would put us outside of the map
boundry. As we close gaps, we can shift the map to rebase
it on the latest TSN we've seen. This saves 4088 bytes per
association just in the map alone along savings from the now
unnecessary structure members.

The sender of the SHUTDOWN MAY also start an overall guard timer
'T5-shutdown-guard' to bound the overall time for the shutdown
sequence. At the expiration of this timer, the sender SHOULD abort
the association by sending an ABORT chunk. If the 'T5-shutdown-
guard' timer is used, it SHOULD be set to the recommended value of 5
times 'RTO.Max'.
The timer 'T5-shutdown-guard' is used to counter the overall time
for shutdown sequence, and it's start by the sender of the SHUTDOWN.
So timer 'T5-shutdown-guard' should be start when we send the first
SHUTDOWN chunk and enter the SHUTDOWN-SENT state, not start when we
receipt of the SHUTDOWN primitive and enter SHUTDOWN-PENDING state.

The ipfragok flag controls whether the packet may be fragmented
either on the local host on beyond. The latter is only valid on
IPv4.
In fact, we never want to do the latter even on IPv4 when PMTU is
enabled. This is because even though we can't fragment packets
within SCTP due to the prtocol's inherent faults, we can still
fragment it at IP layer. By setting the DF bit we will improve
the PMTU process.
RFC 2960 only says that we SHOULD clear the DF bit in this case,
so we're compliant even if we set the DF bit. In fact RFC 4960
no longer has this statement.
Once we make this change, we only need to control the local
fragmentation. There is already a bit in the skb which controls
that, local_df. So this patch sets that instead of using the
ipfragok argument.
The only complication is that there isn't a struct sock object
per transport, so for IPv4 we have to resort to changing the
pmtudisc field for every packet. This should be safe though
as the protocol is single-threaded.
Note that after this patch we can remove ipfragok from the rest
of the stack too.

RFC 4960, Section 11.4. Protection of Non-SCTP-Capable Hosts
When an SCTP stack receives a packet containing multiple control or
DATA chunks and the processing of the packet requires the sending of
multiple chunks in response, the sender of the response chunk(s) MUST
NOT send more than one packet. If bundling is supported, multiple
response chunks that fit into a single packet MAY be bundled together
into one single response packet. If bundling is not supported, then
the sender MUST NOT send more than one response chunk and MUST
discard all other responses. Note that this rule does NOT apply to a
SACK chunk, since a SACK chunk is, in itself, a response to DATA and
a SACK does not require a response of more DATA.
We implement this by not servicing our outqueue until we reach the end
of the packet. This enables maximum bundling. We also identify
'response' chunks and make sure that we only send 1 packet when sending
such chunks.

ICMP6) An implementation MUST validate that the Verification Tag

If the Verification Tag is not 0 and does NOT match, discard the ICMP
message. If it is 0 and the ICMP message contains enough bytes to
verify that the chunk type is an INIT chunk and that the Initiate Tag
matches the tag of the peer, continue with ICMP7. If the ICMP message

All IP addresses that are present in a system are duplicated on
struct sctp_sockaddr_entry. They are linked in the global list
called sctp_local_addr_list. And this struct unions IPv4 and IPv6
addresses.
So, there can be rare case, when a sockaddr_in.sin_addr coincides
with the corresponding part of the sockaddr_in6 and the notifier
for IPv4 will carry away an IPv6 entry.
The fix is to check the family before comparing the addresses.

There is a race is SCTP between the loading of the module
and the access by the socket layer to the protocol functions.
In particular, a list of addresss that SCTP maintains is
not initialized prior to the registration with the protosw.
Thus it is possible for a user application to gain access
to SCTP functions before everything has been initialized.
The problem shows up as odd crashes during connection
initializtion when we try to access the SCTP address list.
The solution is to refactor how we do registration and
initialize the lists prior to registering with the protosw.
Care must be taken since the address list initialization
depends on some other pieces of SCTP initialization. Also
the clean-up in case of failure now also needs to be refactored.

will be vacant. This is not correct.
refer to RFC4460 as following:
IMPLEMENTATION NOTE: If an SCTP endpoint lists in the 'Supported
Address Types' parameter either IPv4 or IPv6, but uses the other
family for sending the packet containing the INIT chunk, or if it
also lists addresses of the other family in the INIT chunk, then
the address family that is not listed in the 'Supported Address
Types' parameter SHOULD also be considered as supported by the
receiver of the INIT chunk. The receiver of the INIT chunk SHOULD
NOT respond with any kind of error indication.
Here is a fix to comply to RFC.

I noticed while looking into some odd behavior in sctp, that the variable
name sctp_pf_inet6_specific was used twice to represent two different
pieces of data (its both a structure name and a pointer to that type of
structure), which is confusing to say the least, and potentially dangerous
depending on the variable scope. This patch cleans that up, and makes the
protocol and address family registration names in SCTP more regular,
increasing readability.

While recevied ASCONF chunk with serial number less then needed, kernel
will treat this chunk as a retransmitted ASCONF chunk and find cached
ASCONF-ACK chunk used sctp_assoc_lookup_asconf_ack(). But this function
will always return NO-NULL. So response with cached ASCONF-ACKs chunk
will cause kernel panic.
In function sctp_assoc_lookup_asconf_ack(), if the cached ASCONF-ACKs
list asconf_ack_list is empty, or if the serial being requested does not
exists, the function as it currectly stands returns the actuall
list_head asoc->asconf_ack_list, this is not a cache ASCONF-ACK chunk

If SCTP-AUTH is enabled, received AUTH chunk with BAD shared key
identifier will cause kernel panic.
Test as following:
step1: enabled /proc/sys/net/sctp/auth_enable
step 2: connect to SCTP server with auth capable. Association is
established between endpoints. Then send a AUTH chunk with a bad
shareid, SCTP server will kernel panic after received that AUTH chunk.
SCTP client SCTP server

COOKIE-ECHO ---------->

AUTH chunk is like this:
AUTH chunk
Chunk type: AUTH (15)
Chunk flags: 0x00
Chunk length: 28
Shared key identifier: 10
HMAC identifier: SHA-1 (1)
HMAC: 0000000000000000000000000000000000000000
The assignment of NULL to key can safely be removed, since key_for_each
(which is just list_for_each_entry under the covers does an initial
assignment to key anyway).
If the endpoint_shared_keys list is empty, or if the key_id being
requested does not exist, the function as it currently stands returns
the actuall list_head (in this case endpoint_shared_keys. Since that
list_head isn't surrounded by an actuall data structure, the last
iteration through list_for_each_entry will do a container_of on key, and
we wind up returning a bogus pointer, instead of NULL, as we should.

This patch introduces new memory accounting functions for each network
protocol. Most of them are renamed from memory accounting functions
for stream protocols. At the same time, some stream memory accounting
functions are removed since other functions do same thing.
Renaming:
sk_stream_free_skb() -> sk_wmem_free_skb()
__sk_stream_mem_reclaim() -> __sk_mem_reclaim()
sk_stream_mem_reclaim() -> sk_mem_reclaim()
sk_stream_mem_schedule -> __sk_mem_schedule()
sk_stream_pages() -> sk_mem_pages()
sk_stream_rmem_schedule() -> sk_rmem_schedule()
sk_stream_wmem_schedule() -> sk_wmem_schedule()
sk_charge_skb() -> sk_mem_charge()
Removeing
sk_stream_rfree(): consolidates into sock_rfree()
sk_stream_set_owner_r(): consolidates into skb_set_owner_r()
sk_stream_mem_schedule()
The following functions are added.
sk_has_account(): check if the protocol supports accounting
sk_mem_uncharge(): do the opposite of sk_mem_charge()
In addition, to achieve consolidation, updating sk_wmem_queued is
removed from sk_mem_charge().
Next, to consolidate memory accounting functions, this patch adds
memory accounting calls to network core functions. Moreover, present
memory accounting call is renamed to new accounting call.
Finally we replace present memory accounting calls with new interface
in TCP and SCTP.

The Security Considerations section of RFC 5061 has the following
text:
If an SCTP endpoint that supports this extension receives an INIT
that indicates that the peer supports the ASCONF extension but does
NOT support the [RFC4895] extension, the receiver of such an INIT
MUST send an ABORT in response. Note that an implementation is
allowed to silently discard such an INIT as an option as well, but
under NO circumstance is an implementation allowed to proceed with
the association setup by sending an INIT-ACK in response.
An implementation that receives an INIT-ACK that indicates that the
peer does not support the [RFC4895] extension MUST NOT send the
COOKIE-ECHO to establish the association. Instead, the
implementation MUST discard the INIT-ACK and report to the upper-
layer user that an association cannot be established destroying the
Transmission Control Block (TCB).
Follow the recomendations.
