Matthew Wilcox (Oracle) fd7353f88b iomap: use __set_page_dirty_nobuffers
The only difference between iomap_set_page_dirty() and
__set_page_dirty_nobuffers() is that the latter includes a debugging check
that a !Uptodate page has private data.

Lee Jones c551f66c5d gfs2: Fix a number of kernel-doc warnings
Building the kernel with W=1 results in a number of kernel-doc warnings
like incorrect function names and parameter descriptions. Fix those,
mostly by adding missing parameter descriptions, removing left-over
descriptions, and demoting some less important kernel-doc comments into
regular comments.

Originally proposed by Lee Jones; improved and combined into a single
patch by Andreas.

Bob Peterson 4e79e3f08e gfs2: Fix case in which ail writes are done to jdata holes
Patch b2a846dbef ("gfs2: Ignore journal log writes for jdata holes")
tried (unsuccessfully) to fix a case in which writes were done to jdata
blocks, the blocks are sent to the ail list, then a punch_hole or truncate
operation caused the blocks to be freed. In other words, the ail items
are for jdata holes. Before b2a846dbef, the jdata hole caused function
gfs2_block_map to return -EIO, which was eventually interpreted as an
IO error to the journal, and then withdraw.

This patch changes function gfs2_get_block_noalloc, which is only used
for jdata writes, so it returns -ENODATA rather than -EIO, and when
-ENODATA is returned to gfs2_ail1_start_one, the error is ignored.
We can safely ignore it because gfs2_ail1_start_one is only called
when the jdata pages have already been written and truncated, so the
ail1 content no longer applies.

Bob Peterson 6302d6f43e gfs2: Only set PageChecked if we have a transaction
With jdata writes, we frequently got into situations where gfs2 deadlocked
because of this calling sequence:

gfs2_ail1_start
gfs2_ail1_flush - for every tr on the sd_ail1_list:
      gfs2_ail1_start_one - for every bd on the tr's tr_ail1_list:
         generic_writepages
	    write_cache_pages passing __writepage()
	       calls clear_page_dirty_for_io which calls set_page_dirty:
which calls jdata_set_page_dirty which sets PageChecked.
	       __writepage() calls
	          mapping->a_ops->writepage AKA gfs2_jdata_writepage

However, gfs2_jdata_writepage checks if PageChecked is set, and if so, it
ignores the write and redirties the page. The problem is that write_cache_pages
calls clear_page_dirty_for_io, which often calls set_page_dirty(). See comments
in page-writeback.c starting with "Yes, Virginia". If it's jdata,
set_page_dirty will call jdata_set_page_dirty which will set PageChecked.
That causes a conflict because it makes it look like the page has been
redirtied by another writer, in which case we need to skip writing it and
redirty the page. That ends up in a deadlock because it isn't a "real" writer
and nothing will ever clear PageChecked.

If we do have a real writer, it will have started a transaction. So this
patch checks if a transaction is in use, and if not, it skips setting
PageChecked. That way, the page will be dirtied, cleaned, and written
appropriately.

Bob Peterson 249ffe18c6 gfs2: don't lock sd_ail_lock in gfs2_releasepage
Patch 380f7c65a7 changed gfs2_releasepage
so that it held the sd_ail_lock spin_lock for most of its processing.
It did this for some mysterious undocumented bug somewhere in the
evict code path. But in the nine years since, evict has been reworked
and fixed many times, and so have the transactions and ail list.
I can't see a reason to hold the sd_ail_lock unless it's protecting
the actual ail lists hung off the transactions. Therefore, this patch
removes the locking to increase speed and efficiency, and to further help
us rework the log flush code to be more concurrent with transactions.

Bob Peterson 68942870c6 gfs2: Wipe jdata and ail1 in gfs2_journal_wipe, formerly gfs2_meta_wipe
Before this patch, when blocks were freed, it called gfs2_meta_wipe to
take the metadata out of the pending journal blocks. It did this mostly
by calling another function called gfs2_remove_from_journal. This is
shortsighted because it does not do anything with jdata blocks which
may also be in the journal.

This patch expands the function so that it wipes out jdata blocks from
the journal as well, and it wipes it from the ail1 list if it hasn't
been written back yet. Since it now processes jdata blocks as well,
the function has been renamed from gfs2_meta_wipe to gfs2_journal_wipe.

New function gfs2_ail1_wipe wants a static view of the ail list, so it
locks the sd_ail_lock when removing items. To accomplish this, function
gfs2_remove_from_journal no longer locks the sd_ail_lock, and it's now
the caller's responsibility to do so.

I was going to make sd_ail_lock locking conditional, but the practice is
generally frowned upon. For details, see: https://lwn.net/Articles/109066/

Bob Peterson 21b6924bb7 gfs2: rename gfs2_write_full_page to gfs2_write_jdata_page, remove parm
Since the function is only used for writing jdata pages, this patch
simply renames function gfs2_write_full_page to a more appropriate
name: gfs2_write_jdata_page. This makes the code easier to understand.

The function was only called in one place, which passed in a pointer to
function gfs2_get_block_noalloc. The function doesn't need to be
passed in. Therefore, this also eliminates the unnecessary parameter
to increase efficiency.

I also took the liberty of cleaning up the function comments.

Kees Cook 3f649ab728 treewide: Remove uninitialized_var() usage
Using uninitialized_var() is dangerous as it papers over real bugs[1]
(or can in the future), and suppresses unrelated compiler warnings
(e.g. "unused variable"). If the compiler thinks it is uninitialized,
either simply initialize the variable or make compiler changes.

In preparation for removing[2] the[3] macro[4], remove all remaining
needless uses with the following script:

git grep '\buninitialized_var\b' | cut -d: -f1 | sort -u | \
	xargs perl -pi -e \
		's/\buninitialized_var\(([^\)]+)\)/\1/g;
s:\s*/\* (GCC be quiet|to make compiler happy) \*/$::g;'

drivers/video/fbdev/riva/riva_hw.c was manually tweaked to avoid
pathological white-space.

No outstanding warnings were found building allmodconfig with GCC 9.3.0
for x86_64, i386, arm64, arm, powerpc, powerpc64le, s390x, mips, sparc64,

Andreas Gruenbacher 20f829999c gfs2: Rework read and page fault locking
So far, gfs2 has taken the inode glocks inside the ->readpage and
->readahead address space operations. Since commit d4388340ae ("fs:
convert mpage_readpages to mpage_readahead"), gfs2_readahead is passed
the pages to read ahead locked. With that, the current holder of the
inode glock may be trying to lock one of those pages while
gfs2_readahead is trying to take the inode glock, resulting in a
deadlock.

Fix that by moving the lock taking to the higher-level ->read_iter file
and ->fault vm operations. This also gets rid of an ugly lock inversion
workaround in gfs2_readpage.

The cache consistency model of filesystems like gfs2 is such that if
data is found in the page cache, the data is up to date and can be used
without taking any filesystem locks. If a page is not cached,
filesystem locks must be taken before populating the page cache.

To avoid taking the inode glock when the data is already cached,
gfs2_file_read_iter first tries to read the data with the IOCB_NOIO flag
set. If that fails, the inode glock is taken and the operation is
retried with the IOCB_NOIO flag cleared.

Andreas Gruenbacher d0a22a4b03 gfs2: Fix iomap write page reclaim deadlock
Since commit 64bc06bb32 ("gfs2: iomap buffered write support"), gfs2 is doing
buffered writes by starting a transaction in iomap_begin, writing a range of
pages, and ending that transaction in iomap_end. This approach suffers from
two problems:

  (1) Any allocations necessary for the write are done in iomap_begin, so when
the data aren't journaled, there is no need for keeping the transaction open
  until iomap_end.

  (2) Transactions keep the gfs2 log flush lock held. When
iomap_file_buffered_write calls balance_dirty_pages, this can end up calling
gfs2_write_inode, which will try to flush the log. This requires taking the
log flush lock which is already held, resulting in a deadlock.

Fix both of these issues by not keeping transactions open from iomap_begin to
iomap_end. Instead, start a small transaction in page_prepare and end it in
page_done when necessary.

for each page written to. With iomap writes, we can allocate a lot more
blocks at once, with a fraction of the allocation overhead for each
page.

Split calculating the number of blocks that can be allocated at a given
position (gfs2_alloc_size) off from gfs2_iomap_alloc: that size
determines the number of blocks to allocate and reserve in the journal.

Andreas Gruenbacher 845802b112 gfs2: Remove ordered write mode handling from gfs2_trans_add_data
In journaled data mode, we need to add each buffer head to the current
transaction. In ordered write mode, we only need to add the inode to
the ordered inode list. So far, both cases are handled in
gfs2_trans_add_data. This makes the code look misleading and is
inefficient for small block sizes as well. Handle both cases separately
instead.

Andreas Gruenbacher 7b5747f43f GFS2: Fix allocation error bug with recursive rgrp glocking
Before this patch function gfs2_write_begin, upon discovering an
error, called gfs2_trim_blocks while the rgrp glock was still held.
That's because gfs2_inplace_release is not called until later.
This patch reorganizes the logic a bit so gfs2_inplace_release
is called to release the lock prior to the call to gfs2_trim_blocks,
thus preventing the glock recursion.

Before this patch, GFS2 was setting the PageChecked flag for ordered

No performance impact is expected as the overhead is marginal. The
parameter is removed simply because it is a bit stupid to have a useless

Abhi Das b066a4eebd gfs2: forcibly flush ail to relieve memory pressure
On systems with low memory, it is possible for gfs2 to infinitely
loop in balance_dirty_pages() under heavy IO (creating sparse files).

balance_dirty_pages() attempts to write out the dirty pages via
gfs2_writepages() but none are found because these dirty pages are
being used by the journaling code in the ail. Normally, the journal
has an upper threshold which when hit triggers an automatic flush
of the ail. But this threshold can be higher than the number of
allowable dirty pages and result in the ail never being flushed.

This patch forces an ail flush when gfs2_writepages() fails to write
anything. This is a good indication that the ail might be holding
some dirty pages.

1. Andy Price submitted a patch to make gfs2_write_full_page a
    static function.
 2. Dan Carpenter submitted a patch to fix a ERR_PTR thinko.

I've also got a few patches, three of which fix bugs related to
deleting very large files, which cause GFS2 to run out of
 journal space:

 3. The first one prevents GFS2 delete operation from requesting too
    much journal space.
 4. The second one fixes a problem whereby GFS2 can hang because it
wasn't taking journal space demand into its calculations.
 5. The third one wakes up IO waiters when a flush is done to restart
processes stuck waiting for journal space to become available.

The other three patches are a performance improvement related to
 spin_lock contention between multiple writers:

 6. The "tr_touched" variable was switched to a flag to be more atomic
and eliminate the possibility of some races.
 7. Function meta_lo_add was moved inline with its only caller to make
the code more readable and efficient.
 8. Contention on the gfs2_log_lock spinlock was greatly reduced by
avoiding the lock altogether in cases where we don't really need
it: buffers that already appear in the appropriate metadata list
for the journal. Many thanks to Steve Whitehouse for the ideas and
    principles behind these patches.

Al Viro 43388b21e7 fix gfs2_stuffed_write_end() on short copies
a) the page is uptodate - ->write_begin() would either fail (in which
case we don't reach ->write_end()), or unstuff the inode, or find the
page already uptodate, or do a successful call of stuffed_readpage(),
which would've made it uptodate

b) zeroing the tail in pagecache is wrong. kill -9 at the right time
while writing unmodified file contents to the same file should _not_
leave us in a situation when read() from the file will be reporting
it full of zeroes. Especially since that effect will be transient -
at some later point the page will be evicted and then we'll be back
to the real file contents.
