Daniel Vetter 3667617347 fbdev: remove FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT around fb_blank
With the recursion broken in the previous patch we can drop the
FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT flag around calls to fb_blank - recursion
prevention was it's only job.

Daniel Vetter de29ae5c09 fbmem: pull fbcon_fb_blanked out of fb_blank
There's a callchain of:

fbcon_fb_blanked -> do_(un)blank_screen -> consw->con_blank
	-> fbcon_blank -> fb_blank

Things don't go horribly wrong because the BKL console_lock safes the
day, but that's about it. And the seeming recursion is broken in 2
ways:
- Starting from the fbdev ioctl we set FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT, which
tells the fbcon_blank code to not call fb_blank. This was required
to not deadlock when recursing on the fb_notifier_chain mutex.
- Starting from the con_blank hook we're getting saved by the
console_blanked checks in do_blank/unblank_screen. Or at least
  that's my theory.

Anyway, recursion isn't awesome, so let's stop it. Breaking the
recursion avoids the need to be in the FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT critical
section, so lets move it out of that too.

The astute reader will notice that fb_blank seems to require
lock_fb_info(), which the fbcon code seems to ignore. I have no idea
how to fix that problem, so let's keep ignoring it.

v2: I forgot the sysfs blanking code.

v3: Fix typo in callchain in the commmit message (Sam).

Daniel Vetter 7a625549ea Revert "backlight/fbcon: Add FB_EVENT_CONBLANK"
This reverts commit 994efacdf9.

The justification is that if hw blanking fails (i.e. fbops->fb_blank)
fails, then we still want to shut down the backlight. Which is exactly
_not_ what fb_blank() does and so rather inconsistent if we end up
with different behaviour between fbcon and direct fbdev usage. Given
that the entire notifier maze is getting in the way anyway I figured
it's simplest to revert this not well justified commit.

v2: Add static inline to the dummy version.

I'm not entirely clear on what new_modelist actually does, it seems
exclusively for a sysfs interface. Which in the end does amount to a

I have no idea why these 2 paths are different, but then I also don't

Daniel Vetter 9c22ad9833 fbdev/sh_mob: Remove fb notifier callback
This seems to be entirely defunct:

- The FB_EVEN_SUSPEND/RESUME events are only sent out by
fb_set_suspend. Which is supposed to be called by drivers in their
suspend/resume hooks, and not itself call into drivers. Luckily
sh_mob doesn't call fb_set_suspend, so this seems to do nothing
  useful.

- The notify hook calls sh_mobile_fb_reconfig() which in turn can
call into the fb notifier. Or attempt too, since that would
  deadlock.

So looks like leftover hacks from when this was originally introduced

Daniel Vetter cf4a3ae4ef fbdev: lock_fb_info cannot fail
Ever since

commit c47747fde9
Author: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
Date: Wed May 11 14:58:34 2011 -0700

fbmem: make read/write/ioctl use the frame buffer at open time

fbdev has gained proper refcounting for the fbinfo attached to any
open files, which means that the backing driver (stored in
fb_info->fbops) cannot untimely disappear anymore.

The only thing that can happen is that the entire device just outright
disappears and gets unregistered, but file_fb_info does check for
that. Except that it's racy - it only checks once at the start of a
file_ops, there's no guarantee that the underlying fbdev won't
untimely disappear. Aside: A proper way to fix that race is probably
to replicate the srcu trickery we've rolled out in drm.

But given that this race has existed since forever it's probably not
one we need to fix right away. do_unregister_framebuffer also nowhere
clears fb_info->fbops, hence the check in lock_fb_info can't possible
catch a disappearing fbdev later on.

Long story short: Ever since the above commit the fb_info->fbops
checks have essentially become dead code. Remove this all.

Aside from the file_ops callbacks, and stuff called from there
there's only register/unregister code left. If that goes wrong a driver
managed to register/unregister a device instance twice or in the wrong
order. That's just a driver bug.

v2:
- fb_mmap had an open-coded version of the fbinfo->fops check, because
it doesn't need the fbinfo->lock. Delete that too.
- Use the wrapper function in fb_open/release now, since no difference
  anymore.

fbcon: Make fbcon a built-time depency for fbdev

we have a static dependency between fbcon and fbdev, and we can
replace the indirection through the notifier chain with a function
call.

v2: Sam Ravnborg noticed that mach-pxa/am200epd.c has a notifier too,
and listens to this.

...

Looking at the code it seems to wait for some fb to show up, so that
it can get the framebuffer base address from the fb_info struct. I
suspect his is some firmware fbdev. Then it uses that information to
let the real fbdev driver (metronomefb.c by the looks) get at the
framebuffer memory.

This doesn't looke like it's easy to fix (except by deleting the
entire thing, seems untouched since 2008, we might be able to get away
with that), so let's just stuff a few #ifdef into fb.h and fbmem.c and
cry over them for a bit.

Daniel Vetter 1f4ed2fb01 fbcon: Remove fbcon_has_exited
This is unused code since

commit 6104c37094
Author: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch>
Date: Tue Aug 1 17:32:07 2017 +0200

fbcon: Make fbcon a built-time depency for fbdev

when fbcon was made a compile-time static dependency of fbdev. We
can't exit fbcon anymore without exiting fbdev first, which only works
if all fbdev drivers have unloaded already. Hence this is all dead
code.

v2: I missed that fbcon_exit is also called from con_deinit stuff, and
there fbcon_has_exited prevents double-cleanup. But we can fix that
by properly resetting con2fb_map[] to all -1, which is used everywhere
else to indicate "no fb_info allocate to this console". With that
change the double-cleanup (which resulted in a module refcount underflow,
among other things) is prevented.

Aside: con2fb_map is a signed char, so don't register more than 128 fb_info
or hilarity will ensue.

v3: CI showed me that I still didn't fully understand what's going on
here. The leaked references in con2fb_map have been used upon
rebinding the fb console in fbcon_init. It worked because fbdev
unregistering still cleaned out con2fb_map, and reset it to info_idx.
If the last fbdev driver unregistered, then it also reset info_idx,
and unregistered the fbcon driver.

Imo that's all a bit fragile, so let's keep the con2fb_map reset to
-1, and in fbcon_init pick info_idx if we're starting fresh. That
means unbinding and rebinding will cleanse the mapping, but why are
you doing that if you want to retain the mapping, so should be fine.

Also, I think info_idx == -1 is impossible in fbcon_init - we
unregister the fbcon in that case. So catch&warn about that.

v4: Drop unecessary assignment - I forgot to delete the first
assignment of info in fbcon_init.

Here is another set of reviewed patches that adds SPDX tags to different
kernel files, based on a set of rules that are being used to parse the
comments to try to determine that the license of the file is
"GPL-2.0-or-later" or "GPL-2.0-only". Only the "obvious" versions of
these matches are included here, a number of "non-obvious" variants of
text have been found but those have been postponed for later review and
 analysis.

There is also a patch in here to add the proper SPDX header to a bunch
of Kbuild files that we have missed in the past due to new files being
added and forgetting that Kbuild uses two different file names for
Makefiles. This issue was reported by the Kbuild maintainer.

These patches have been out for review on the linux-spdx@vger mailing
list, and while they were created by automatic tools, they were
hand-verified by a bunch of different people, all whom names are on the
 patches are reviewers.

Grzegorz Halat a1ad1cc970 vt/fbcon: deinitialize resources in visual_init() after failed memory allocation
After memory allocation failure vc_allocate() doesn't clean up data
which has been initialized in visual_init(). In case of fbcon this
leads to divide-by-0 in fbcon_init() on next open of the same tty.

memory allocation in vc_allocate() may fail here:
1097:     vc->vc_screenbuf = kzalloc(vc->vc_screenbuf_size, GFP_KERNEL);

on next open() fbcon_init() skips vc_font.data initialization:
1088:     if (!p->fontdata) {

division by zero in fbcon_init() happens here:
1149:     new_cols /= vc->vc_font.width;

Additional check is needed in fbcon_deinit() to prevent
usage of uninitialized vc_screenbuf:

1251:        if (vc->vc_hi_font_mask && vc->vc_screenbuf)
1252:                set_vc_hi_font(vc, false);

Ard Biesheuvel f8585539df fbdev/efifb: Ignore framebuffer memmap entries that lack any memory types
The following commit:

38ac0287b7 ("fbdev/efifb: Honour UEFI memory map attributes when mapping the FB")

updated the EFI framebuffer code to use memory mappings for the linear
framebuffer that are permitted by the memory attributes described by the
EFI memory map for the particular region, if the framebuffer happens to
be covered by the EFI memory map (which is typically only the case for
framebuffers in shared memory). This is required since non-x86 systems
may require cacheable attributes for memory mappings that are shared
with other masters (such as GPUs), and this information cannot be
described by the Graphics Output Protocol (GOP) EFI protocol itself,
and so we rely on the EFI memory map for this.

As reported by James, this breaks some x86 systems:

[ 1.173368] efifb: probing for efifb
  [ 1.173386] efifb: abort, cannot remap video memory 0x1d5000 @ 0xcf800000
[ 1.173395] Trying to free nonexistent resource <00000000cf800000-00000000cf9d4bff>
  [ 1.173413] efi-framebuffer: probe of efi-framebuffer.0 failed with error -5

The problem turns out to be that the memory map entry that describes the
framebuffer has no memory attributes listed at all, and so we end up with
a mem_flags value of 0x0.

So work around this by ensuring that the memory map entry's attribute field
has a sane value before using it to mask the set of usable attributes.

Ira Weiny 73b0140bf0 mm/gup: change GUP fast to use flags rather than a write 'bool'
To facilitate additional options to get_user_pages_fast() change the
singular write parameter to be gup_flags.

This patch does not change any functionality. New functionality will
follow in subsequent patches.

Some of the get_user_pages_fast() call sites were unchanged because they
already passed FOLL_WRITE or 0 for the write parameter.

NOTE: It was suggested to change the ordering of the get_user_pages_fast()
arguments to ensure that callers were converted. This breaks the current
GUP call site convention of having the returned pages be the final
parameter. So the suggestion was rejected.

or bank A can control both outputs.

If the platform data was not configured, then the driver defaults to
enabling both banks. This patch changes the default value to disable
both banks before parsing the firmware node so that just a single bank
can be enabled if desired. There are no in-tree users of this driver.

Driver was tested on a LG Nexus 5 (hammerhead) phone.

Linus Walleij a6fdbd5515 video: amba-clcd: Decomission Versatile and Nomadik
These board families are now handled in the DRM subsystem
where we can have reusable panel drivers and some other
stuff. The PL111 there is now the driver used in the
defconfig for Versatile and Nomadik so no need to keep
this code around.

There are a few minor machines in arch/arm/ such as
mach-netx still using the old driver, so we need to keep
the core fbdev driver around for some time.

Yifeng Li 9dc2011398 fbdev: sm712fb: fix memory frequency by avoiding a switch/case fallthrough
A fallthrough in switch/case was introduced in f627caf55b ("fbdev:
sm712fb: fix crashes and garbled display during DPMS modesetting"),
due to my copy-paste error, which would cause the memory clock frequency
for SM720 to be programmed to SM712.

Since it only reprograms the clock to a different frequency, it's only
a benign issue without visible side-effect, so it also evaded Sudip
Mukherjee's code review and regression tests. scripts/checkpatch.pl
also failed to discover the issue, possibly due to nested switch
statements.

This issue was found by Stephen Rothwell by building linux-next with
-Wimplicit-fallthrough.

Yifeng Li 4ed7d2ccb7 fbdev: sm712fb: use 1024x768 by default on non-MIPS, fix garbled display
Loongson MIPS netbooks use 1024x600 LCD panels, which is the original
target platform of this driver, but nearly all old x86 laptops have
1024x768. Lighting 768 panels using 600's timings would partially
garble the display. Since it's not possible to distinguish them reliably,
we change the default to 768, but keep 600 as-is on MIPS.

Further, earlier laptops, such as IBM Thinkpad 240X, has a 800x600 LCD
panel, this driver would probably garbled those display. As we don't

Yifeng Li f627caf55b fbdev: sm712fb: fix crashes and garbled display during DPMS modesetting
On a Thinkpad s30 (Pentium III / i440MX, Lynx3DM), blanking the display
or starting the X server will crash and freeze the system, or garble the
display.

Experiments showed this problem can mostly be solved by adjusting the
order of register writes. Also, sm712fb failed to consider the difference
of clock frequency when unblanking the display, and programs the clock for
SM712 to SM720.

Fix them by adjusting the order of register writes, and adding an
additional check for SM720 for programming the clock frequency.

Yifeng Li 9e0e59993d fbdev: sm712fb: fix crashes during framebuffer writes by correctly mapping VRAM
On a Thinkpad s30 (Pentium III / i440MX, Lynx3DM), running fbtest or X
will crash the machine instantly, because the VRAM/framebuffer is not
mapped correctly.

On SM712, the framebuffer starts at the beginning of address space, but
SM720's framebuffer starts at the 1 MiB offset from the beginning. However,
sm712fb fails to take this into account, as a result, writing to the
framebuffer will destroy all the registers and kill the system immediately.
Another problem is the driver assumes 8 MiB of VRAM for SM720, but some
SM720 system, such as this IBM Thinkpad, only has 4 MiB of VRAM.

Fix this problem by removing the hardcoded VRAM size, adding a function to
query the amount of VRAM from register MCR76 on SM720, and adding proper
framebuffer offset.

Please note that the memory map may have additional problems on Big-Endian
system, which is not available for testing by myself. But I highly suspect
that the original code is also broken on Big-Endian machines for SM720, so
at least we are not making the problem worse. More, the driver also assumed
SM710/SM712 has 4 MiB of VRAM, but it has a 2 MiB version as well, and used
in earlier laptops, such as IBM Thinkpad 240X, the driver would probably
crash on them. I've never seen one of those machines and cannot fix it, but
I have documented these problems in the comments.

Yifeng Li dcf9070595 fbdev: sm712fb: fix VRAM detection, don't set SR70/71/74/75
On a Thinkpad s30 (Pentium III / i440MX, Lynx3DM), the amount of Video
RAM is not detected correctly by the xf86-video-siliconmotion driver.
This is because sm712fb overwrites the GPR71 Scratch Pad Register, which
is set by BIOS on x86 and used to indicate amount of VRAM.

Other Scratch Pad Registers, including GPR70/74/75, don't have the same
side-effect, but overwriting to them is still questionable, as they are
not related to modesetting.

On a Thinkpad s30 (Pentium III / i440MX, Lynx3DM), rebooting with

Experiments showed the FPR30 register caused this behavior. Moreover,

configurated by the motherboard manufacturer by hardwiring pull-down

On a Thinkpad s30 (Pentium III / i440MX, Lynx3DM), rebooting with
sm712fb framebuffer driver would cause a white screen of death on
the next POST, presumably the proper timings for the LCD panel was
not reprogrammed properly by the BIOS.

Experiments showed a few CRTC Scratch Registers, including CRT3D,
CRT3E and CRT3F may be used internally by BIOS as some flags. CRT3B is
a hardware testing register, we shouldn't mess with it. CRT3C has
blanking signal and line compare control, which is not needed for this

Ard Biesheuvel c2999c281e efifb: Omit memory map check on legacy boot
Since the following commit:

38ac0287b7 ("fbdev/efifb: Honour UEFI memory map attributes when mapping the FB")

efifb_probe() checks its memory range via efi_mem_desc_lookup(),
and this leads to a spurious error message:

   EFI_MEMMAP is not enabled

at every boot on KVM. This is quite annoying since the error message
appears even if you set "quiet" boot option.

Since this happens on legacy boot, which strangely enough exposes
a EFI framebuffer via screen_info, let's double check that we are
doing an EFI boot before attempting to access the EFI memory map.

Finn Thain 066ac5c3c4 powerpc, fbdev: Use NV_CMODE and NV_VMODE only when CONFIG_PPC32 && CONFIG_PPC_PMAC && CONFIG_NVRAM
This patch addresses inconsistencies in Mac framebuffer drivers and their
use of Kconfig symbols relating to NVRAM, so PPC64 can use CONFIG_NVRAM.

The defined(CONFIG_NVRAM) condition is replaced with the weaker
IS_REACHABLE(CONFIG_NVRAM) condition, like atari_scsi.

Macintosh framebuffer drivers use default settings for color mode and
video mode that are found in NVRAM. On PCI Macs, MacOS stores display
settings in the Name Registry (NR) partition in NVRAM*. On NuBus Macs,
there is no NR partition and MacOS stores display mode settings in PRAM**.

Early-model Macs are the ones most likely to benefit from these settings,
since they are more likely to have a fixed-frequency monitor connected to
the built-in framebuffer device. Moreover, a single NV_CMODE value and
a single NV_VMODE value provide for only one display.

The NV_CMODE and NV_VMODE constants are apparently offsets into the NR
partition for Old World machines. This also suggests that these defaults
are not useful on later models. The NR partition seems to be optional on
New World machines. CONFIG_NVRAM cannot be enabled on PPC64 at present.

It is safe to say that NVRAM support in PowerMac fbdev drivers is only
applicable to CONFIG_PPC32 so make this condition explicit. This means
matroxfb driver won't crash on PPC64 when CONFIG_NVRAM becomes available
there.

For imsttfb, add the missing CONFIG_NVRAM test to prevent a build failure,
since PPC64 does not implement nvram_read_byte(). Also add a missing
machine_is(powermac) check. Change the inconsistent dependency on
CONFIG_PPC and the matching #ifdef tests to CONFIG_PPC_PMAC.

For valkyriefb, to improve clarity and consistency with the other PowerMac
fbdev drivers, test for CONFIG_PPC_PMAC instead of !CONFIG_MAC. Remove a
bogus comment regarding PRAM.

Finn Thain a156c7ba66 powerpc: Replace nvram_* extern declarations with standard header
Remove the nvram_read_byte() and nvram_write_byte() declarations in
powerpc/include/asm/nvram.h and use the cross-platform static functions
in linux/nvram.h instead.
