struct udf_bitmap has array of buffer pointers attached to it. The code
unnecessarily used s_block_bitmap as a pointer to the array instead of
the standard trick of using 0 length array in the declaration. Change
that to make code more readable and actually shrink the structure by one
pointer.

For large UDF filesystems with 512-byte blocks the number of necessary
bitmap blocks is larger than 2^16 so s_nr_groups in udf_bitmap overflows
(the number will overflow for filesystems larger than 128 GB with
512-byte blocks). That results in ENOSPC errors despite the filesystem
has plenty of free space.
Fix the problem by changing s_nr_groups' type to 'int'. That is enough
even for filesystems 2^32 blocks (UDF maximum) and 512-byte blocksize.

This patch implements extent caching in case of file reading.
While reading a file, currently, UDF reads metadata serially
which takes a lot of time depending on the number of extents present
in the file. Caching last accessd extent improves metadata read time.
Instead of reading file metadata from start, now we read from
the cached extent.
This patch considerably improves the time spent by CPU in kernel mode.
For example, while reading a 10.9 GB file using dd:

So far we just marked the buffer as dirty and left writing on flusher thread
but especially on opening that opens possible race window where we could write
other modified fs structures to disk before we mark filesystem as open. So sync
LVID buffer to disk after opening and closing fs.

There's no reason to call rcu_barrier() on every
deactivate_locked_super(). We only need to make sure that all delayed rcu
free inodes are flushed before we destroy related cache.
Removing rcu_barrier() from deactivate_locked_super() affects some fast
paths. E.g. on my machine exit_group() of a last process in IPC
namespace takes 0.07538s. rcu_barrier() takes 0.05188s of that time.

Pull user namespace changes from Eric Biederman:
"This is a mostly modest set of changes to enable basic user namespace
support. This allows the code to code to compile with user namespaces
enabled and removes the assumption there is only the initial user
namespace. Everything is converted except for the most complex of the
filesystems: autofs4, 9p, afs, ceph, cifs, coda, fuse, gfs2, ncpfs,
nfs, ocfs2 and xfs as those patches need a bit more review.
The strategy is to push kuid_t and kgid_t values are far down into
subsystems and filesystems as reasonable. Leaving the make_kuid and
from_kuid operations to happen at the edge of userspace, as the values
come off the disk, and as the values come in from the network.
Letting compile type incompatible compile errors (present when user
namespaces are enabled) guide me to find the issues.
The most tricky areas have been the places where we had an implicit
union of uid and gid values and were storing them in an unsigned int.
Those places were converted into explicit unions. I made certain to
handle those places with simple trivial patches.
Out of that work I discovered we have generic interfaces for storing
quota by projid. I had never heard of the project identifiers before.
Adding full user namespace support for project identifiers accounts
for most of the code size growth in my git tree.
Ultimately there will be work to relax privlige checks from
"capable(FOO)" to "ns_capable(user_ns, FOO)" where it is safe allowing
root in a user names to do those things that today we only forbid to
non-root users because it will confuse suid root applications.
While I was pushing kuid_t and kgid_t changes deep into the audit code
I made a few other cleanups. I capitalized on the fact we process
netlink messages in the context of the message sender. I removed
usage of NETLINK_CRED, and started directly using current->tty.
Some of these patches have also made it into maintainer trees, with no
problems from identical code from different trees showing up in
linux-next.
After reading through all of this code I feel like I might be able to
win a game of kernel trivial pursuit."

Add support for the O_DIRECT flag. There are two cases to deal with:
1. Small files stored in the ICB (inode control block?): just return 0
from the new udf_adinicb_direct_IO() handler to fall back to buffered
I/O.
2. Larger files, not stored in the ICB: nothing special here. Just call
blockdev_direct_IO() from our new udf_direct_IO() handler and tidy up
any blocks instantiated outside i_size on error. This is pretty
standard. Factor error handling code out of udf_write_begin() into new
function udf_write_failed() so it can also be called by udf_direct_IO().
Also change the whitespace in udf_aops to make it a bit neater.

When a file is stored in ICB (inode), we overwrite part of the file, and
the page containing file's data is not in page cache, we end up corrupting
file's data by overwriting them with zeros. The problem is we use
simple_write_begin() which simply zeroes parts of the page which are not
written to. The problem has been introduced by be021ee4 (udf: convert to
new aops).
Fix the problem by providing a ->write_begin function which makes the page
properly uptodate.

If the new size is larger than the old size and the old file data was
stored in the ICB (iinfo->i_alloc_type == ICBTAG_FLAG_AD_IN_ICB) and the
new size still fits in the ICB, skip the call to udf_extend_file() as it
does not handle this i_alloc_type value (it calls BUG()).

When a partition table length is corrupted to be close to 1 << 32, the
check for its length may overflow on 32-bit systems and we will think
the length is valid. Later on the kernel can crash trying to read beyond
end of buffer. Fix the check to avoid possible overflow.

When we are mounting filesystem, we can load one partition table before
finding out that we cannot complete processing of logical volume descriptor

The UDF file-system does not need the 's_dirt' superblock flag because it does
not define the 'write_super()' method. This flag was set to 1 in few places and
set to 0 in '->sync_fs()' and was basically useless. Stop using it because it
is on its way out.

This allows comparing hash and len in one operation on 64-bit
architectures. Right now only __d_lookup_rcu() takes advantage of this,
since that is the case we care most about.
The use of anonymous struct/unions hides the alternate 64-bit approach
from most users, the exception being a few cases where we initialize a
'struct qstr' with a static initializer. This makes the problematic
cases use a new QSTR_INIT() helper function for that (but initializing
just the name pointer with a "{ .name = xyzzy }" initializer remains
valid, as does just copying another qstr structure).

ECMA 1.67 requires setting logicalBlocksRecorded to zero if the file
has no extents. This should be checked in udf_update_inode().

Commit 36350462 removed unused quota support from UDF. As an unfortunate
sideeffect it also removed updates of i_blocks so all files had i_block == 0.
Fix the problem by returning updates of file space back to UDF allocation and
freeing functions.

When we hit EIO while writing LVID, the buffer uptodate bit is cleared.
This then results in an anoying warning from mark_buffer_dirty() when we
write the buffer again. So just set uptodate flag unconditionally.

During BKL removal in 2.6.38, conversion of files from in-ICB format to normal
format got broken. We call ->writepage with i_data_sem held but udf_get_block()
also acquires i_data_sem thus creating A-A deadlock.
We fix the problem by dropping i_data_sem before calling ->writepage() which is
safe since i_mutex still protects us against any changes in the file. Also fix
pagelock - i_data_sem lock inversion in udf_expand_file_adinicb() by dropping
i_data_sem before calling find_or_create_page().

note re mount options: fmask and dmask are explicitly truncated to 12bit,
UDF_INVALID_MODE just needs to be guaranteed to differ from any such value.
And umask is used only in &= with umode_t, so we ignore other bits anyway.

vfs_create() ignores everything outside of 16bit subset of its

Seeing that just about every destructor got that INIT_LIST_HEAD() copied into
it, there is no point whatsoever keeping this INIT_LIST_HEAD in inode_init_once();
the cost of taking it into inode_init_always() will be negligible for pipes
and sockets and negative for everything else. Not to mention the removal of
boilerplate code from ->destroy_inode() instances...

It is not necessary to load mirror metadata FE when metadata FE is OK. So try

If there is a problem with a scratched disc or loader, it's valuable to know
which error occurred.
Convert some debug messages to udf_error, neaten those messages too.
Add the calculated tag checksum and the read checksum to error message.
Make udf_error a public function and move the logging prototypes together.

The exportfs encode handle function should return the minimum required
handle size. This helps user to find out the handle size by passing 0
handle size in the first step and then redoing to the call again with
the returned handle size value.

RCU free the struct inode. This will allow:
- Subsequent store-free path walking patch. The inode must be consulted for
permissions when walking, so an RCU inode reference is a must.
- sb_inode_list_lock to be moved inside i_lock because sb list walkers who want
to take i_lock no longer need to take sb_inode_list_lock to walk the list in
the first place. This will simplify and optimize locking.
- Could remove some nested trylock loops in dcache code
- Could potentially simplify things a bit in VM land. Do not need to take the
page lock to follow page->mapping.
The downsides of this is the performance cost of using RCU. In a simple
creat/unlink microbenchmark, performance drops by about 10% due to inability to
reuse cache-hot slab objects. As iterations increase and RCU freeing starts
kicking over, this increases to about 20%.
In cases where inode lifetimes are longer (ie. many inodes may be allocated
during the average life span of a single inode), a lot of this cache reuse is
not applicable, so the regression caused by this patch is smaller.
The cache-hot regression could largely be avoided by using SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU,
however this adds some complexity to list walking and store-free path walking,
so I prefer to implement this at a later date, if it is shown to be a win in
real situations. I haven't found a regression in any non-micro benchmark so I
doubt it will be a problem.

Hi,
There's a small memory leak in fs/udf/namei.c::udf_find_entry().
We dynamically allocate memory for 'fname' with kmalloc() and in most
situations we free it before we leave the function, but there is one
situation where we do not (but should). This patch closes the leak by
jumping to the 'out_ok' label which does the correct cleanup rather than
doing half the cleanup and returning directly.

If udf_bread() called from udf_add_entry() managed to merge created extent to
an already existing one (or if previous extents could be merged), the code
truncating the last extent to proper size would just overwrite the freshly
allocated extent with an extent that used to be in that place. This obviously
results in a directory corruption. Fix the problem by properly reloading the
last extent.

The udf_readdir(), udf_lookup(), udf_create(), udf_mknod(), udf_mkdir(),
udf_rmdir(), udf_link(), udf_get_parent() and udf_unlink() seems already
adequately protected by i_mutex held by VFS invoking calls. The udf_rename()
instead should be already protected by lock_rename again by VFS. The
udf_ioctl(), udf_fill_super() and udf_evict_inode() don't requires any further
protection.

Replace bkl with the UDF_I(inode)->i_data_sem rw semaphore in
udf_release_file(), udf_symlink(), udf_symlink_filler(), udf_get_block(),
udf_block_map(), and udf_setattr(). The rule now is that any operation
on regular file's or symlink's extents (or generally allocation information
including goal block) needs to hold i_data_sem.

udf_count_free_bitmap() does not need BKL because bitmaps are in a fixed
place on disk and so we can count set bits without serialization.
udf_count_free_table() is now protected by s_alloc_mutex instead of BKL
to get a consistent view of free space extents.

There's no need to call udf_add_free_space() for one block at a time. It saves
us noticeable amount of work and yields different result from the original
code only if the filesystem is corrupted and bitmap bit is already cleared.
In such case counter of free blocks is probably wrong anyways so the change
does not matter.

udf_put_super() does not need BKL because the filesystem is shut down so
there's nothing to race with. The credential changes in udf_remount_fs()
and LVID changes are now protected by dedicated locks so we can remove BKL
from this function as well.

Superblock carries credentials (uid, gid, etc.) which are used as default
values in __udf_read_inode() when media does not provide these. These
credentials can change during remount so we protect them by a rwlock so that
each inode gets a consistent set of credentials.

udf_open_lvid() and udf_close_lvid() were modifying LVID without
s_alloc_mutex. Since they can be called from remount, the modification
could race with other filesystem modifications of LVID so protect them
by s_alloc_mutex just to be sure.

uniqueID handling has been duplicated in three places. Move it into a common
helper. Since we modify an LVID buffer with uniqueID update, we take
sbi->s_alloc_mutex to protect agaist other modifications of the structure.

udf_update_inode() does not need BKL since on-disk inode modifications are
protected by the buffer lock and reading of values of in-memory inode is
safe without any lock. In some cases we can write inconsistent inode state
to disk but in that case inode will be marked dirty and overwritten later.
Also make unnecessarily global udf_sync_inode() static.

With all the patches we have queued in the BKL removal tree, only a
few dozen modules are left that actually rely on the BKL, and even
there are lots of low-hanging fruit. We need to decide what to do
about them, this patch illustrates one of the options:
Every user of the BKL is marked as 'depends on BKL' in Kconfig,
and the CONFIG_BKL becomes a user-visible option. If it gets
disabled, no BKL using module can be built any more and the BKL
code itself is compiled out.
The one exception is file locking, which is practically always
enabled and does a 'select BKL' instead. This effectively forces
CONFIG_BKL to be enabled until we have solved the fs/lockd
mess and can apply the patch that removes the BKL from fs/locks.c.

This patch is a preparation necessary to remove the BKL from do_new_mount().
It explicitly adds calls to lock_kernel()/unlock_kernel() around
get_sb/fill_super operations for filesystems that still uses the BKL.
I've read through all the code formerly covered by the BKL inside
do_kern_mount() and have satisfied myself that it doesn't need the BKL
any more.
do_kern_mount() is already called without the BKL when mounting the rootfs
and in nfsctl. do_kern_mount() calls vfs_kern_mount(), which is called
from various places without BKL: simple_pin_fs(), nfs_do_clone_mount()
through nfs_follow_mountpoint(), afs_mntpt_do_automount() through
afs_mntpt_follow_link(). Both later functions are actually the filesystems
follow_link inode operation. vfs_kern_mount() is calling the specified
get_sb function and lets the filesystem do its job by calling the given
fill_super function.
Therefore I think it is safe to push down the BKL from the VFS to the
low-level filesystems get_sb/fill_super operation.

Fix up trivial conflicts in fs/nilfs2/super.c
Replace inode_setattr with opencoded variants of it in all callers. This
moves the remaining call to vmtruncate into the filesystem methods where it
can be replaced with the proper truncate sequence.
In a few cases it was obvious that we would never end up calling vmtruncate
so it was left out in the opencoded variant:
spufs: explicitly checks for ATTR_SIZE earlier
btrfs,hugetlbfs,logfs,dlmfs: explicitly clears ATTR_SIZE earlier
ufs: contains an opencoded simple_seattr + truncate that sets the filesize just above

For the new truncate sequence every filesystem that wants to truncate on-disk
state needs a seattr method. Convert the remaining filesystems that implement
the truncate inode operation to have its own setattr method.

Fix up conflicts in fs/ext4/super.c and fs/ufs/file.c
We don't name our generic fsync implementations very well currently.
The no-op implementation for in-memory filesystems currently is called
simple_sync_file which doesn't make too much sense to start with,
the the generic one for simple filesystems is called simple_fsync
which can lead to some confusion.
This patch renames the generic file fsync method to generic_file_fsync
to match the other generic_file_* routines it is supposed to be used
with, and the no-op implementation to noop_fsync to make it obvious
what to expect. In addition add some documentation for both methods.

Do not use the fallback default_llseek() if the readdir operation of the
filesystem still uses the big kernel lock.
Since llseek() modifies
file->f_pos of the directory directly it may need locking to not confuse
readdir which usually uses file->f_pos directly as well
Since the special characteristics of the BKL (unlocked on schedule) are
not necessary in this case, the inode mutex can be used for locking as
provided by generic_file_llseek(). This is only possible since all
filesystems, except reiserfs, either use a directory as a flat file or
with disk address offsets. Reiserfs on the other hand uses a 32bit hash
off the filename as the offset so generic_file_llseek() can get used as
well since the hash is always smaller than sb->s_maxbytes (= (512 << 32) -
blocksize).

Quota on UDF is non-functional at least since 2.6.16 (I'm too lazy to
do more archeology) because it does not provide .quota_write and .quota_read
functions and thus quotaon(8) just returns EINVAL. Since nobody complained
for all those years and quota support is not even in UDF standard just nuke
it.

Currently the VFS calls into the quotactl interface for unmounting
filesystems. This means filesystems with their own quota handling
can't easily distinguish between user-space originating quotaoff
and an unount. Instead move the responsibily of the unmount handling
into the filesystem to be consistent with all other dquot handling.
Note that we do call dquot_disable a lot later now, e.g. after
a sync_filesystem. But this is fine as the quota code does all its
writes via blockdev's mapping and that is synced even later.

Currently do_remount_sb calls into the dquot code to tell it about going
from rw to ro and ro to rw. Move this code into the filesystem to
not depend on the dquot code in the VFS - note ocfs2 already ignores
these calls and handles remount by itself. This gets rid of overloading
the quotactl calls and allows to unify the VFS and XFS codepaths in
that area later.

Quota must being initialized if size or uid/git changes requested.
But initialization performed in two different places:
in case of i_size file system is responsible for dquot init
, but in case of uid/gid init will be called internally in
dquot_transfer().
This ambiguity makes code harder to understand.
Let's move this logic to one common helper function.

bloc->logicalBlockNum is unsigned so it's never less than zero.
When I saw that, it made me worry that "bloc->logicalBlockNum + count"
could overflow. That's why I changed the check for less than zero
to an overflow check. (The test works because "count" is also
unsigned.)

percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.
percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.

The script does the followings.
* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.
* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
doesn't seem to be any matching order.
* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
file.
The conversion was done in the following steps.
1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
files.
2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
inclusions to around 150 files.
3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.
4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.
5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
necessary.
6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.
7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).
* x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
* powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
* sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
* ia64 SMP allmodconfig
* s390 SMP allmodconfig
* alpha SMP allmodconfig
* um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig
8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
a separate patch and serve as bisection point.
Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

Writing of inode holding unallocated space info was broken because we first
cleared the buffer and after that checked whether it contains a tag meaning the
block holds unallocated space information. Fix the problem by checking
appropriate in memory flag instead.
Also cleanup the function a bit along the way - most importantly lock buffer
when modifying its contents, check for buffer_write_io_error instead of
!buffer_uptodate, etc..

This gives the filesystem more information about the writeback that
is happening. Trond requested this for the NFS unstable write handling,

Currently various places in the VFS call vfs_dq_init directly. This means
we tie the quota code into the VFS. Get rid of that and make the
filesystem responsible for the initialization. For most metadata operations
this is a straight forward move into the methods, but for truncate and
open it's a bit more complicated.
For truncate we currently only call vfs_dq_init for the sys_truncate case
because open already takes care of it for ftruncate and open(O_TRUNC) - the
new code causes an additional vfs_dq_init for those which is harmless.
For open the initialization is moved from do_filp_open into the open method,
which means it happens slightly earlier now, and only for regular files.
The latter is fine because we don't need to initialize it for operations
on special files, and we already do it as part of the namespace operations
for directories.
Add a dquot_file_open helper that filesystems that support generic quotas
can use to fill in ->open.

filesystem responsible for the transfer. Most filesystems already
do this, only ufs and udf need the code added, and for jfs it needs to

and rationalize the wrappers around it to move as much as possible
code into the common block for CONFIG_QUOTA vs not. Also rename
all these helpers to be named dquot_* instead of vfs_dq_*.

It is not very good to do IO in udf_clear_inode. First, VFS does not really
expect inode to become dirty there and thus we have to write it ourselves,
second, memory reclaim gets blocked waiting for IO when it does not really
expect it, third, the IO pattern (e.g. on umount) resulting from writes in
udf_clear_inode is bad and it slows down writing a lot.
The reason why UDF needed to do IO in udf_clear_inode is that UDF standard
mandates extent length to exactly match inode size. But when we allocate
extents to a file or directory, we don't really know what exactly the final
file size will be and thus temporarily set it to block boundary and later
truncate it to exact length in udf_clear_inode. Now, this is changed to
truncate to final file size in udf_release_file for regular files. For
directories and symlinks, we do the truncation at the moment when learn
what the final file size will be.

Some disks do not contain VAT inode in the last recorded block as required
by the standard but a few blocks earlier (or the number of recorded blocks
is wrong). So look for the VAT inode a bit before the end of the media.

When we close a file, we remove preallocated blocks from it. But this
truncation was not protected by i_mutex and thus it could have raced with a
write through a different fd and cause crashes or even filesystem corruption.

So far we preallocated blocks also for directories but that brings a
problem, when to get rid of preallocated blocks we don't need. So far
we removed them in udf_clear_inode() which has a disadvantage that
1) blocks are unavailable long after writing to a directory finished
and thus one can get out of space unnecessarily early
2) releasing blocks from udf_clear_inode is problematic because VFS
does not expect us to redirty inode there and it also slows down
memory reclaim.
So preallocate blocks only for regular files where we can drop preallocation
in udf_release_file.

VAT inode is located in the last block recorded block of the medium. When the
drive errorneously reports number of recorded blocks, we failed to load the VAT
inode and thus mount the medium. This patch makes kernel try to read VAT inode
from the last block of the device if it is different from the last recorded
block.

Move BKL into ->put_super from the only caller. A couple of
filesystems had trivial enough ->put_super (only kfree and NULLing of
s_fs_info + stuff in there) to not get any locking: coda, cramfs, efs,
hugetlbfs, omfs, qnx4, shmem, all others got the full treatment. Most
of them probably don't need it, but I'd rather sort that out individually.
Preferably after all the other BKL pushdowns in that area.

Until now we have had a 1:1 mapping between storage device physical
block size and the logical block sized used when addressing the device.
With SATA 4KB drives coming out that will no longer be the case. The
sector size will be 4KB but the logical block size will remain
512-bytes. Hence we need to distinguish between the physical block size
and the logical ditto.
This patch renames hardsect_size to logical_block_size.

We update information in logical volume integrity descriptor after each
allocation (as LVID contains free space, number of directories and files on
disk etc.). If the filesystem is on some phase change media, this leads to its
quick degradation as such media is able to handle only 10000 overwrites or so.
We solve the problem by writing new information into LVID only on umount,
remount-ro and sync. This solves the problem at the price of longer media
inconsistency (previously media became consistent after pdflush flushed dirty
LVID buffer) but that should be acceptable.

Anchor block can be located at several places on the medium. Two of the
locations are relative to media end which is problematic to detect. Also
some drives report some block as last but are not able to read it or any
block nearby before it. So let's first try block 256 and if it is all fine,
don't look at other possible locations of anchor blocks to avoid IO errors.
This change required a larger reorganization of code but the new code is
hopefully more readable and definitely shorter.

So far it was the other way around which was a bit confusing. Also make
udf_vrs() return loff_t which is really the type it should return (not int).

This patch makes the UDF FS driver use the hardware sector size as the
default logical block size, which is required by the UDF specifications.
While the previous default of 2048 bytes was correct for optical disks,
it was not for hard disks or USB storage devices, and made it impossible
to use such a device with the default mount options. (The Linux mkudffs
tool uses a default block size of 2048 bytes even on devices with
smaller hardware sectors, so this bug is unlikely to be noticed unless
UDF-formatted USB storage devices are exchanged with other OSs.)
To avoid regressions for people who use loopback optical disk images or
who used the (sometimes wrong) defaults of mkudffs, we also try with
a block size of 2048 bytes if no anchor was found with the hardware
sector size.

Functions udf_CS0toNLS() and udf_NLStoCS0() didn't count with the fact that
NLS can return negative length when invalid character is given to it for
conversion. Thus interesting things could happen (such as overwriting random
memory with the rest of filename). Add appropriate checks.

udf_clear_inode() can leave behind buffers on mapping's i_private list (when
we truncated preallocation). Call invalidate_inode_buffers() so that the list
is properly cleaned-up before we return from udf_clear_inode(). This is ugly
and suggest that we should cleanup preallocation earlier than in clear_inode()
but currently there's no such call available since drop_inode() is called under
inode lock and thus is unusable for disk operations.

Wrap access to task credentials so that they can be separated more easily from
the task_struct during the introduction of COW creds.
Change most current->(|e|s|fs)[ug]id to current_(|e|s|fs)[ug]id().
Change some task->e?[ug]id to task_e?[ug]id(). In some places it makes more
sense to use RCU directly rather than a convenient wrapper; these will be
addressed by later patches.

This is a much better version of a previous patch to make the parser
tables constant. Rather than changing the typedef, we put the "const" in
all the various places where its required, allowing the __initconst
exception for nfsroot which was the cause of the previous trouble.
This was posted for review some time ago and I believe its been in -mm
since then.

UDF currently doesn't set a llseek method for regular files, which
means it will fall back to default_llseek. This means no one can seek
beyond 2 Gigabytes on udf, and that there's not protection vs
the i_size updates from writers.

I case we failed to allocate memory for inode when creating it, we did not
properly free block already allocated for this inode. Move memory allocation
before the block allocation which fixes this issue (thanks for the idea go to
Ingo Oeser <ioe-lkml@rameria.de>). Also remove a few superfluous
initializations already done in udf_alloc_inode().

A memory allocation inside alloc_mutex must not recurse back into the
filesystem itself because that leads to lock inversion between iprune_mutex and
alloc_mutex (and thus to deadlocks - see traces below). alloc_mutex is actually
needed only to update allocation statistics in the superblock so we can drop it
before we start allocating memory for the inode.

Kmem cache passed to constructor is only needed for constructors that are
themselves multiplexeres. Nobody uses this "feature", nor does anybody uses
passed kmem cache in non-trivial way, so pass only pointer to object.

In some cases it could happen that some block passed test in
udf_check_anchor_block() even though udf_read_tagged() refused to read it later
(e.g. because checksum was not correct). This patch makes
udf_check_anchor_block() use udf_read_tagged() so that the checking is
stricter.
This fixes the regression (certain disks unmountable) caused by commit
423cf6dc04.

When UDF filesystem is mounted with noadinicb mount option, it
happens that we extend an empty directory with a block. A code in
udf_add_entry() didn't count with this possibility and used
uninitialized data leading to memory and filesystem corruption.

This patch implements parsing of metadata partitions and reading of Metadata
File thus allowing to read UDF 2.50 media. Error resilience is implemented
through accessing the Metadata Mirror File in case the data the Metadata File

According to OSTA UDF specification, only anchor blocks and primary volume
descriptors are placed on media relative to the last session. All other block
numbers are absolute (in the partition or the whole media). This seems to be
confirmed by multisession media created by other systems.

We didn't handle VAT packed inside the inode - we tried to call udf_block_map()
on such file which lead to strange results at best. Add proper handling of
packed VAT as we do it with other packed files.

We incorrectly (way to strictly) checked version of VAT on loading and thus
refuse to mount correct media. There are just two format versions - below 2.0
and above 2.0 and we understand both. So update the version check accordingly.

real last recorded block on a UDF media. Sebastian Manciulea

UDF anchor block detection is complicated by several things - there are several
places where the anchor point can be, some of them relative to the last
recorded block which some devices report wrongly. Moreover some devices on some
media seem to have 7 spare blocks sectors for every 32 blocks (at least as far
as I understand the old code) so we have to count also with that possibility.
This patch splits anchor block detection into several functions so that it is
clearer what we actually try to do. We fix several bugs of the type "for such
and such media, we fail to check block blah" as a result of the cleanup.

According to ECMA 167 rev. 3 (see 3/8.4.2.1), Anchor Volume Descriptor
Pointer should be recorded at two or more anchor points located at sectors
256, N, N - 256, where N - is a largest logical sector number at volume
space.
So we should always try to detect N on UDF volume before trying to find
Anchor Volume Descriptor (i.e. calling to udf_find_anchor()).
That said, all this patch does is updates the s_last_block even if the
udf_vrs() returns positive value.

There are several places in UDF where we declared temporary arrays of
UDF_NAME_LEN bytes on stack. This is not nice to stack usage so this patch
changes those places to use kmalloc() instead. Also clean up bail-out paths
in those functions when we are changing them.

udf_build_ustr was broken:
- size == 1:
dest->u_len = ptr[1 - 1], but at ptr[0] there's cmpID,
so we created string with wrong length
it should not happen, so we BUG() it
- size > 1 and size < UDF_NAME_LEN:
we set u_len correctly, but memcpy copied one needless byte
- size == UDF_NAME_LEN - 1:
memcpy overwrited u_len - with correct value, but...
- size >= UDF_NAME_LEN:
we copied UDF_NAME_LEN - 1 bytes, but dest->u_name is array
of UDF_NAME_LEN - 2 bytes, so we were overwriting u_len with
character from input string
nobody noticed because all callers set size
to acceptable values (constants within range)

There's really no reason to keep udf headers in include/linux as they're
not used by anything but fs/udf/.
This patch merges most of include/linux/udf_fs_i.h into fs/udf/udf_i.h,
include/linux/udf_fs_sb.h into fs/udf/udf_sb.h and
include/linux/udf_fs.h into fs/udf/udfdecl.h.
The only thing remaining in include/linux/ is a stub of udf_fs_i.h
defining the four user-visible udf ioctls. It's also moved from
unifdef-y to headers-y because it can be included unconditionally now.

When adding directory entry to a directory, we have to properly increase
length of the last extent. Handle this similarly as extending regular files -
make extents always have size multiple of block size (it will be truncated
down to proper size in udf_clear_inode()).

Position in directory returned by readdir is offset of directory entry divided
by four (don't ask me why). Make this conversion only when reading f_pos from
userspace / writing it there and internally work in bytes. It makes things
more easily readable and also fixes a bug (we forgot to divide length of the
entry by 4 when advancing f_pos in udf_add_entry()).

This patch does additional coding style fixup. Initially the code is being
distorted by Lindent (in my patches sent not very long ago) and fixed in
the followup patches but this stuff was accidently missed.
New and old compiled files were compared with cmp to check for being
identically. So the patch will not break the kernel.

Slab constructors currently have a flags parameter that is never used. And
the order of the arguments is opposite to other slab functions. The object
pointer is placed before the kmem_cache pointer.

Convert udf to new aops. Also seem to have fixed pagecache corruption in
udf_adinicb_commit_write -- page was marked uptodate when it is not. Also,
fixed the silly setup where prepare_write was doing a kmap to be used in
commit_write: just do kmap_atomic in write_end. Use libfs helpers to make
this easier.

Fix possible NULL pointer dereference when freeing blocks in case table of
free space is used. Also fix handling of the case when we need to move
extent from one block to another one to make space for indirect extent.

If UDF superblock is incorrect, we can fail to find a table of free /
allocated space and consequently Oops. Handle this situation more
gracefully by ignoring the broken UDF partition.

This patch fix weird behaviour of UDF mounting procedure. To get UID
changed (for now) we have to type
mount -t udf -o uid=some_user,uid=ignore /dev/device /mnt/moun_point
and specifying two uid at once is strange a bit. So with the patch we are
able to mount without additional 'uid=ignore' option. The same for GID
option is done.
This patch will not break current mount scheme (with two option).
Btw this does fix (I hope) the following
[BUG 6124] mount of UDF fs ignores UID and GID options

Slab destructors were no longer supported after Christoph's
c59def9f22 change. They've been
BUGs for both slab and slub, and slob never supported them
either.
This rips out support for the dtor pointer from kmem_cache_create()
completely and fixes up every single callsite in the kernel (there were
about 224, not including the slab allocator definitions themselves,
or the documentation references).

This patch adds checking for granted memory while filling up inode data to
prevent possible NULL pointer usage. If there is not enough memory to fill
inode data we just mark it as "bad". Also some whitespace cleanup.

We have to take care that when we call udf_discard_prealloc() from
udf_clear_inode() we have to write inode ourselves afterwards (otherwise,
some changes might be lost leading to leakage of blocks, use of free blocks
or improperly aligned extents).
Also udf_discard_prealloc() does two different things - it removes
preallocated blocks and truncates the last extent to exactly match i_size.
We move the latter functionality to udf_truncate_tail_extent(), call
udf_discard_prealloc() when last reference to a file is dropped and call
udf_truncate_tail_extent() when inode is being removed from inode cache
(udf_clear_inode() call).
We cannot call udf_truncate_tail_extent() earlier as subsequent open+write
would find the last block of the file mapped and happily write to the end
of it, although the last extent says it's shorter.

First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline
function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock()
mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why.
This patch
a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h
b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c
c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation
d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly.
e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were
getting them indirectly
Net result is:
a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if
they don't need sched.h
b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files:
on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files,
after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%).

Make UDF work correctly for files larger than 1GB. As no extent can be
longer than (1<<30)-blocksize bytes, we have to create several extents if a
big hole is being created. As a side-effect, we now don't discard
preallocated blocks when creating a hole.

Use sector_t and loff_t for file offsets in UDF filesystem. Otherwise an
overflow may occur for long files. Also make inode_bmap() return offset in
the extent in number of blocks instead of number of bytes - for most
callers this is more convenient.

It appears that a minor thinko occurred in udf_rmdir and the
(already-cleared) link count on the directory that is being removed was
being decremented instead of the link count on its parent directory. This
gives rise to lots of kernel messages similar to:
UDF-fs warning (device loop1): udf_rmdir: empty directory has nlink != 2 (8)
when removing directory trees. No other ill effects have been observed but
I guess it could theoretically result in the link count overflowing on a
very long-lived, much modified directory.

I have never seen a use of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL. It is only supported by
SLAB.
I think its purpose was to have a callback after an object has been freed
to verify that the state is the constructor state again? The callback is
performed before each freeing of an object.
I would think that it is much easier to check the object state manually
before the free. That also places the check near the code object
manipulation of the object.
Also the SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL callback is only performed if the kernel was
compiled with SLAB debugging on. If there would be code in a constructor
handling SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL then it would have to be conditional on
SLAB_DEBUG otherwise it would just be dead code. But there is no such code
in the kernel. I think SLUB_DEBUG_INITIAL is too problematic to make real
use of, difficult to understand and there are easier ways to accomplish the
same effect (i.e. add debug code before kfree).
There is a related flag SLAB_CTOR_VERIFY that is frequently checked to be
clear in fs inode caches. Remove the pointless checks (they would even be
pointless without removeal of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL) from the fs constructors.
This is the last slab flag that SLUB did not support. Remove the check for
unimplemented flags from SLUB.

Many struct inode_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const
moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential
dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to
these shared resources.
