Semnatically it really doesn't matter where we grab the ticket. But
since the ticket is a fake lockdep lock, it matters for lockdep
validation purposes.
This means stuff like grabbing a ticket and then doing
copy_from/to_user isn't allowed anymore. This is a changed compared to
the current ttm fault handler, which doesn't bother with having a full
reservation. Since I'm looking into fixing the TODO entry in
ttm_mem_evict_wait_busy() I think that'll have to change sooner or
later anyway, better get started. A bit more context on why I'm
looking into this: For backwards compat with existing i915 gem code I
think we'll have to do full slowpath locking in the i915 equivalent of
the eviction code. And with dynamic dma-buf that will leak across
drivers, so another thing we need to standardize and make sure it's
done the same way everyway.
Unfortunately this means another full audit of all drivers:
- gem helpers: acquire_init is done right before taking locks, so no
problem. Same for acquire_fini and unlocking, which means nothing
that's not already covered by the dma_resv_lock rules will be caught
with this extension here to the acquire_ctx.
- etnaviv: An absolute massive amount of code is run between the
acquire_init and the first lock acquisition in submit_lock_objects.
But nothing that would touch user memory and could cause a fault.
Furthermore nothing that uses the ticket, so even if I missed
something, it would be easy to fix by pushing the acquire_init right
before the first use. Similar on the unlock/acquire_fini side.
- i915: Right now (and this will likely change a lot rsn) the acquire
ctx and actual locks are right next to each another. No problem.
- msm has a problem: submit_create calls acquire_init, but then
submit_lookup_objects() has a bunch of copy_from_user to do the
object lookups. That's the only thing before submit_lock_objects
call dma_resv_lock(). Despite all the copypasta to etnaviv, etnaviv
does not have this issue since it copies all the userspace structs
earlier. submit_cleanup does not have any such issues.
With the prep patch to pull out the acquire_ctx and reorder it msm
is going to be safe too.
- nouveau: acquire_init is right next to ttm_bo_reserve, so all good.
Similar on the acquire_fini/ttm_bo_unreserve side.
- ttm execbuf utils: acquire context and locking are even in the same
functions here (one function to reserve everything, the other to
unreserve), so all good.
- vc4: Another case where acquire context and locking are handled in
the same functions (one function to lock everything, the other to
unlock).

Full audit of everyone:
- i915, radeon, amdgpu should be clean per their maintainers.
- vram helpers should be fine, they don't do command submission, so
really no business holding struct_mutex while doing copy_*_user. But
I haven't checked them all.
- panfrost seems to dma_resv_lock only in panfrost_job_push, which
looks clean.
- v3d holds dma_resv locks in the tail of its v3d_submit_cl_ioctl(),
copying from/to userspace happens all in v3d_lookup_bos which is
outside of the critical section.
- vmwgfx has a bunch of ioctls that do their own copy_*_user:
- vmw_execbuf_process: First this does some copies in
vmw_execbuf_cmdbuf() and also in the vmw_execbuf_process() itself.
Then comes the usual ttm reserve/validate sequence, then actual
submission/fencing, then unreserving, and finally some more
copy_to_user in vmw_execbuf_copy_fence_user. Glossing over tons of
details, but looks all safe.
- vmw_fence_event_ioctl: No ttm_reserve/dma_resv_lock anywhere to be
seen, seems to only create a fence and copy it out.
- a pile of smaller ioctl in vmwgfx_ioctl.c, no reservations to be
found there.
Summary: vmwgfx seems to be fine too.
- virtio: There's virtio_gpu_execbuffer_ioctl, which does all the
copying from userspace before even looking up objects through their
handles, so safe. Plus the getparam/getcaps ioctl, also both safe.
- qxl only has qxl_execbuffer_ioctl, which calls into
qxl_process_single_command. There's a lovely comment before the
__copy_from_user_inatomic that the slowpath should be copied from
i915, but I guess that never happened. Try not to be unlucky and get
your CS data evicted between when it's written and the kernel tries
to read it. The only other copy_from_user is for relocs, but those
are done before qxl_release_reserve_list(), which seems to be the
only thing reserving buffers (in the ttm/dma_resv sense) in that
code. So looks safe.
- A debugfs file in nouveau_debugfs_pstate_set() and the usif ioctl in
usif_ioctl() look safe. nouveau_gem_ioctl_pushbuf() otoh breaks this
everywhere and needs to be fixed up.
v2: Thomas pointed at that vmwgfx calls dma_resv_init while it holds a
dma_resv lock of a different object already. Christian mentioned that
ttm core does this too for ghost objects. intel-gfx-ci highlighted
that i915 has similar issues.
Unfortunately we can't do this in the usual module init functions,
because kernel threads don't have an ->mm - we have to wait around for
some user thread to do this.
Solution is to spawn a worker (but only once). It's horrible, but it
works.
v3: We can allocate mm! (Chris). Horrible worker hack out, clean
initcall solution in.

This patch is a stripped down version of the locking changes
necessary to support dynamic DMA-buf handling.
It adds a dynamic flag for both importers as well as exporters
so that drivers can choose if they want the reservation object
locked or unlocked during mapping of attachments.
For compatibility between drivers we cache the DMA-buf mapping
during attaching an importer as soon as exporter/importer
disagree on the dynamic handling.
Issues and solutions we considered:
- We can't change all existing drivers, and existing improters have
strong opinions about which locks they're holding while calling
dma_buf_attachment_map/unmap. Exporters also have strong opinions about
which locks they can acquire in their ->map/unmap callbacks, levaing no
room for change. The solution to avoid this was to move the
actual map/unmap out from this call, into the attach/detach callbacks,
and cache the mapping. This works because drivers don't call
attach/detach from deep within their code callchains (like deep in
memory management code called from cs/execbuf ioctl), but directly from
the fd2handle implementation.
- The caching has some troubles on some soc drivers, which set other modes
than DMA_BIDIRECTIONAL. We can't have 2 incompatible mappings, and we
can't re-create the mapping at _map time due to the above locking fun.
We very carefuly step around that by only caching at attach time if the
dynamic mode between importer/expoert mismatches.
- There's been quite some discussion on dma-buf mappings which need active
cache management, which would all break down when caching, plus we don't
have explicit flush operations on the attachment side. The solution to
this was to shrug and keep the current discrepancy between what the
dma-buf docs claim and what implementations do, with the hope that the
begin/end_cpu_access hooks are good enough and that all necessary
flushing to keep device mappings consistent will be done there.

The .ioctl and .compat_ioctl file operations have the same prototype so
they can both point to the same function, which works great almost all
the time when all the commands are compatible.
One exception is the s390 architecture, where a compat pointer is only
31 bit wide, and converting it into a 64-bit pointer requires calling
compat_ptr(). Most drivers here will never run in s390, but since we now
have a generic helper for it, it's easy enough to use it consistently.
I double-checked all these drivers to ensure that all ioctl arguments
are used as pointers or are ignored, but are not interpreted as integer
values.

Make dma_fence_enable_sw_signaling() behave like its
dma_fence_add_callback() and dma_fence_default_wait() counterparts and
perform the test to enable signaling under the fence->lock, along with
the action to do so. This ensure that should an implementation be trying
to flush the cb_list (by signaling) on retirement before freeing the
fence, it can do so in a race-free manner.
See also 0fc89b6802 ("dma-fence: Simply wrap dma_fence_signal_locked
with dma_fence_signal").

In light of recent review slip ups, the absence of a suite of tests for
dma-buf became apparent. Given the current plethora of testing
frameworks, opt for one already in use by Intel's CI and so allow easy
hook up into igt.
We introduce a new module that when loaded will execute the list of
selftests and their subtest. The names of the selftests are put into the
modinfo as parameters so that igt can identify each, and run them
independently, principally for ease of error reporting.

The timestamp and the cb_list are mutually exclusive, the cb_list can
only be added to prior to being signaled (and once signaled we drain),
while the timestamp is only valid upon being signaled. Both the
timestamp and the cb_list are only valid while the fence is alive, and
as soon as no references are held can be replaced by the rcu_head.
By reusing the union for the timestamp, we squeeze the base dma_fence
struct to 64 bytes on x86-64.

Currently dma_fence_signal() tries to avoid the spinlock and only takes
it if absolutely required to walk the callback list. However, to allow
for some users to surreptitiously insert lazy signal callbacks that
do not depend on enabling the signaling mechanism around every fence,
we always need to notify the callbacks on signaling. As such, we will
always need to take the spinlock and dma_fence_signal() effectively
becomes a clone of dma_fence_signal_locked().
v2: Update the test_and_set_bit() before entering the spinlock.
v3: Drop the test_[and_set]_bit() before the spinlock, it's a caller

The scenario that defeats simply grabbing a set of shared/exclusive

may be reallocated by a SLAB_TYPESAFE_BY_RCU fence slab cache. In this
scenario, while keeping the rcu_read_lock we need to establish that no

During release of the syncpt, we remove it from the list of syncpt and
the tree, but only if it is not already been removed. However, during
signaling, we first remove the syncpt from the list. So, if we
concurrently free and signal the syncpt, the free may decide that it is
not part of the tree and immediately free itself -- meanwhile the
signaler goes on to use the now freed datastructure.
In particular, we get struck by commit 0e2f733add ("dma-buf: make

This patch adds complimentary DMA_BUF_SET_NAME ioctls, which lets
userspace processes attach a free-form name to each buffer.
This information can be extremely helpful for tracking and accounting
shared buffers. For example, on Android, we know what each buffer will
be used for at allocation time: GL, multimedia, camera, etc. The
userspace allocator can use DMA_BUF_SET_NAME to associate that
information with the buffer, so we can later give developers a
breakdown of how much memory they're allocating for graphics, camera,
etc.

By traversing /proc/*/fd and /proc/*/map_files, processes with CAP_ADMIN
can get a lot of fine-grained data about how shmem buffers are shared
among processes. stat(2) on each entry gives the caller a unique
ID (st_ino), the buffer's size (st_size), and even the number of pages
currently charged to the buffer (st_blocks / 512).
In contrast, all dma-bufs share the same anonymous inode. So while we
can count how many dma-buf fds or mappings a process has, we can't get
the size of the backing buffers or tell if two entries point to the same
dma-buf. On systems with debugfs, we can get a per-buffer breakdown of
size and reference count, but can't tell which processes are actually
holding the references to each buffer.
Replace the singleton inode with full-fledged inodes allocated by
alloc_anon_inode(). This involves creating and mounting a
mini-pseudo-filesystem for dma-buf, following the example in fs/aio.c.

Currently there is an underlying assumption that i915_request_unsubmit()
is synchronous wrt the GPU -- that is the request is no longer in flight
as we remove it. In the near future that may change, and this may upset
our signaling as we can process an interrupt for that request while it
is no longer in flight.
CPU0 CPU1
intel_engine_breadcrumbs_irq
(queue request completion)
i915_request_cancel_signaling
... ...
i915_request_enable_signaling
dma_fence_signal
Hence in the time it took us to drop the lock to signal the request, a
preemption event may have occurred and re-queued the request. In the
process, that request would have seen I915_FENCE_FLAG_SIGNAL clear and
so reused the rq->signal_link that was in use on CPU0, leading to bad
pointer chasing in intel_engine_breadcrumbs_irq.
A related issue was that if someone started listening for a signal on a
completed but no longer in-flight request, we missed the opportunity to
immediately signal that request.
Furthermore, as intel_contexts may be immediately released during
request retirement, in order to be entirely sure that
intel_engine_breadcrumbs_irq may no longer dereference the intel_context
(ce->signals and ce->signal_link), we must wait for irq spinlock.
In order to prevent the race, we use a bit in the fence.flags to signal
the transfer onto the signal list inside intel_engine_breadcrumbs_irq.
For simplicity, we use the DMA_FENCE_FLAG_SIGNALED_BIT as it then
quickly signals to any outside observer that the fence is indeed signaled.
v2: Sketch out potential dma-fence API for manual signaling
v3: And the test_and_set_bit()

Since ARM has never been open source friendly on the GPU side of the

head in the right direction.
There is also now the ability if you don't have any of the legacy

For a lot of use cases we need 64bit sequence numbers. Currently drivers
overload the dma_fence structure to store the additional bits.
Stop doing that and make the sequence number in the dma_fence always
64bit.
For compatibility with hardware which can do only 32bit sequences the
comparisons in __dma_fence_is_later only takes the lower 32bits as significant
when the upper 32bits are all zero.

Fixes the BUG_ON spuriously triggering under the following
circumstances:
* reservation_object_reserve_shared is called with shared_count ==
shared_max - 1, so obj->staged is freed in preparation of an in-place
update.
* reservation_object_add_shared_fence is called with the first fence,
after which shared_count == shared_max.
* reservation_object_add_shared_fence is called with a follow-up fence
from the same context.
In the second reservation_object_add_shared_fence call, the BUG_ON
triggers. However, nothing bad would happen in
reservation_object_add_shared_inplace, since both fences are from the
same context, so they only occupy a single slot.
Prevent this by moving the BUG_ON to where an overflow would actually
happen (e.g. if a buggy caller didn't call
reservation_object_reserve_shared before).

The current Wound-Wait mutex algorithm is actually not Wound-Wait but
Wait-Die. Implement also Wound-Wait as a per-ww-class choice. Wound-Wait
is, contrary to Wait-Die a preemptive algorithm and is known to generate
fewer backoffs. Testing reveals that this is true if the
number of simultaneous contending transactions is small.
As the number of simultaneous contending threads increases, Wait-Wound
becomes inferior to Wait-Die in terms of elapsed time.
Possibly due to the larger number of held locks of sleeping transactions.
Update documentation and callers.

dma-buf/fence: add fence_wait_any_timeout function v2
there was a restriction added that this only works if the dma-fence
uses the dma_fence_default_wait hook. Which works for amdgpu, which is
the only caller. Well, until you share some buffers with e.g. i915,
then you get an -EINVAL.
But there's really no reason for this, because all drivers must
support callbacks. The special ->wait hook is only as an optimization;
if the driver needs to create a worker thread for an active callback,
then it can avoid to do that if it knows that there's a process
context available already. So ->wait is just an optimization, just
using the logic in dma_fence_default_wait() should work for all
drivers.
Let's remove this restriction.

Let's make it optional by assuming that signalling is already
available when the callback isn't present.

This is the mindless scripted replacement of kernel use of POLL*
variables as described by Al, done by this script:
for V in IN OUT PRI ERR RDNORM RDBAND WRNORM WRBAND HUP RDHUP NVAL MSG; do
L=`git grep -l -w POLL$V | grep -v '^t' | grep -v /um/ | grep -v '^sa' | grep -v '/poll.h$'|grep -v '^D'`
for f in $L; do sed -i "-es/^\([^\"]*\)\(\<POLL$V\>\)/\\1E\\2/" $f; done
done
with de-mangling cleanups yet to come.
NOTE! On almost all architectures, the EPOLL* constants have the same
values as the POLL* constants do. But they keyword here is "almost".
For various bad reasons they aren't the same, and epoll() doesn't
actually work quite correctly in some cases due to this on Sparc et al.
The next patch from Al will sort out the final differences, and we
should be all done.

Ages ago Rob Clark noted,
"Currently with fence-array, we have a potential deadlock situation. If
we fence_add_callback() on an array-fence, the array-fence's lock is
acquired first, and in it's ->enable_signaling() callback, it will install
cbs on it's array-member fences, so the array-member's lock is acquired
second.
But in the signal path, the array-member's lock is acquired first, and
the array-fence's lock acquired second."
Rob proposed either extensive changes to dma-fence to unnest the
fence-array signaling, or to defer the signaling onto a workqueue. This
is a more refined version of the later, that should keep the latency
of the fence signaling to a minimum by using an irq-work, which is
executed asap.

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 11139
and resulted in the first patch in this series.
If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930
and resulted in the second patch in this series.
- if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1
and that resulted in the third patch in this series.
- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

Commit e941759c74 ("fence: dma-buf cross-device synchronization") added
trace event fence_annotate_wait_on, but never used it. It was renamed
to dma_fence_annotate_wait_on by commit f54d186700 ("dma-buf: Rename
struct fence to dma_fence") but still not used. As defined trace events
have data structures and functions created for them, it is a waste of
memory if they are not used. Remove the unused trace event.

sync_file_ioctl_fence_info has a race between filling the status
of the underlying fences and the overall status of the sync_file.
If fence transitions in the time frame between its sync_fill_fence_info
and the later dma_fence_is_signaled for the sync_file, the returned
information is inconsistent showing non-signaled underlying fences but
an overall signaled state.
This patch changes sync_file_ioctl_fence_info to track what has been
encoded and using that as the overall sync_file status.

If userspace already dropped its own reference by closing the sw_sync
fence fd we might end up in a deadlock where
dma_fence_is_signaled_locked() will trigger the release of the fence and
thus try to hold the lock to remove the fence from the list.
dma_fence_is_signaled_locked() tries to release/free the fence and hold
the lock in the process.

Up until recently sync_file were create to export a single dma-fence to
userspace, and so we could canabalise a bit insie dma-fence to mark
whether or not we had enable polling for the sync_file itself. However,
with the advent of syncobj, we do allow userspace to create multiple
sync_files for a single dma-fence. (Similarly, that the sw-sync
validation framework also started returning multiple sync-files wrapping
a single dma-fence for a syncpt also triggering the problem.)
This patch reverts my suggestion in commit e241655373
("dma-buf/sync_file: only enable fence signalling on poll()") to use a
single bit in the shared dma-fence and restores the sync_file->flags for
tracking the bits individually.

We only set the timestamp before we mark the fence as signaled. It is
done before to avoid observers having a window in which they may see the
fence as complete but no timestamp. Having it does incur a potential for
the timestamp to be written twice, and even for it to be corrupted if
the u64 write is not atomic. Instead use a new bit to record the
presence of the timestamp, and teach the readers to wait until it is set
if the fence is complete. There still remains a race where the timestamp
for the signaled fence may be shown before the fence is reported as
signaled, but that's a pre-existing error.

When a timeout of zero is specified, the caller is only interested in
the fence status.
In the current implementation, dma_fence_default_wait will always call
schedule_timeout() at least once for an unsignaled fence. This adds a
significant overhead to a fence status query.
Avoid this overhead by returning early if a zero timeout is specified.

Seeing the kunmap_atomic dma_buf_ops share the same name with a macro
in highmem.h, the former can be aliased if any dma-buf user includes
that header.
I'm personally trying to include highmem.h inside scatterlist.h and this
breaks the dma-buf code proper.
Christoph Hellwig suggested [1] renaming it and pushing this patch ASAP.
To maintain consistency I've renamed all four of kmap* and kunmap* to be
map* and unmap*. (Even though only kmap_atomic presently conflicts.)

The dma_fence.error field (formerly known as dma_fence.status) is an
optional field that may be set by drivers before calling
dma_fence_signal(). The field can be used to indicate that the fence was
completed in err rather than with success, and is visible to other
consumers of the fence and to userspace via sync_file.
This patch renames the field from status to error so that its meaning is
hopefully more clear (and distinct from dma_fence_get_status() which is
a composite between the error state and signal state) and adds a helper
that validates the preconditions of when it is suitable to adjust the
error field.

allocating fences from a SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU, or similar freelist, then
within an RCU grace period a fence may be freed and reallocated. The RCU

When merging sync_files there is a case when we can end up with only one
fence in the merged sync_file: when all fences belong to the same
timeline.
So for this case a fence_array is not created instead we just assigned the
fence to sync_file->fence. Then we do not use the fences array anymore nor
does free it.
This patch frees the array.

When we merge several fences, if all of them are signaled already, we
still keep one of them. So instead of using add_fence(), which will not
increase the refcount of signaled fences, we should explicitly call
fence_get() for the fence we are keeping.
This patch fixes a kernel panic that can be triggered by creating a fence
that is expired (or increasing the timeline until it expires), then
creating a merged fence out of it, and deleting the merged fence. This
will make the original expired fence's refcount go to zero.

Rendering operations to the dma-buf are tracked implicitly via the
reservation_object (dmabuf->resv). This is used to allow poll() to
wait upon outstanding rendering (or just query the current status of
rendering). The dma-buf sync ioctl allows userspace to prepare the
dma-buf for CPU access, which should include waiting upon rendering.
(Some drivers may need to do more work to ensure that the dma-buf mmap
is coherent as well as complete.)

struct fence_array inherits from struct fence and carries a
collection of fences that needs to be waited together.
It is useful to translate a sync_file to a fence to remove the complexity
of dealing with sync_files on DRM drivers. So even if there are many
fences in the sync_file that needs to waited for a commit to happen,
they all get added to the fence_collection and passed for DRM use as
a standard struct fence.
That means that no changes needed to any driver besides supporting fences.
To avoid fence_array's fence allocates a new timeline if needed (when
combining fences from different timelines).
v2: Comments by Daniel Vetter:

- remove fence_collection_put()

Fence contexts are created on the fly (for example) by the GPU scheduler used
in the amdgpu driver as a result of an userspace request. Because of this
userspace could in theory force a wrap around of the 32bit context number
if it doesn't behave well.
Avoid this by increasing the context number to 64bits. This way even when
userspace manages to allocate a billion contexts per second it takes more
than 500 years for the context number to wrap around.

Drivers, especially i915.ko, can fail during the initial migration of a
dma-buf for CPU access. However, the error code from the driver was not
being propagated back to ioctl and so userspace was blissfully ignorant
of the failure. Rendering corruption ensues.
Whilst fixing the ioctl to return the error code from
dma_buf_start_cpu_access(), also do the same for
dma_buf_end_cpu_access(). For most drivers, dma_buf_end_cpu_access()
cannot fail. i915.ko however, as most drivers would, wants to avoid being
uninterruptible (as would be required to guarrantee no failure when
flushing the buffer to the device). As userspace already has to handle
errors from the SYNC_IOCTL, take advantage of this to be able to restart
the syscall across signals.
This fixes a coherency issue for i915.ko as well as reducing the
uninterruptible hold upon its BKL, the struct_mutex.

The userspace might need some sort of cache coherency management e.g. when CPU
and GPU domains are being accessed through dma-buf at the same time. To
circumvent this problem there are begin/end coherency markers, that forward
directly to existing dma-buf device drivers vfunc hooks. Userspace can make use
of those markers through the DMA_BUF_IOCTL_SYNC ioctl. The sequence would be
used like following:
- mmap dma-buf fd
- for each drawing/upload cycle in CPU 1. SYNC_START ioctl, 2. read/write
to mmap area 3. SYNC_END ioctl. This can be repeated as often as you
want (with the new data being consumed by the GPU or say scanout device)
- munmap once you don't need the buffer any more

This adds some extra functions to deal with rcu.
reservation_object_get_fences_rcu() will obtain the list of shared
and exclusive fences without obtaining the ww_mutex.
reservation_object_wait_timeout_rcu() will wait on all fences of the
reservation_object, without obtaining the ww_mutex.
reservation_object_test_signaled_rcu() will test if all fences of the
reservation_object are signaled without using the ww_mutex.
reservation_object_get_excl and reservation_object_get_list require
the reservation object to be held, updating requires
write_seqcount_begin/end. If only the exclusive fence is needed,
rcu_dereference followed by fence_get_rcu can be used, if the shared
fences are needed it's recommended to use the supplied functions.

Move the list of shared fences to a struct, and return it in
reservation_object_get_list().
Add reservation_object_get_excl to get the exclusive fence.
Add reservation_object_reserve_shared(), which reserves space
in the reservation_object for 1 more shared fence.
reservation_object_add_shared_fence() and
reservation_object_add_excl_fence() are used to assign a new
fence to a reservation_object pointer, to complete a reservation.

This type of fence can be used with hardware synchronization for simple
hardware that can block execution until the condition
(dma_buf[offset] - value) >= 0 has been met when WAIT_GEQUAL is used,
or (dma_buf[offset] != 0) has been met when WAIT_NONZERO is set.
A software fallback still has to be provided in case the fence is used
with a device that doesn't support this mechanism. It is useful to expose
this for graphics cards that have an op to support this.
Some cards like i915 can export those, but don't have an option to wait,
so they need the software fallback.
I extended the original patch by Rob Clark.

A fence can be attached to a buffer which is being filled or consumed
by hw, to allow userspace to pass the buffer without waiting to another
device. For example, userspace can call page_flip ioctl to display the
next frame of graphics after kicking the GPU but while the GPU is still
rendering. The display device sharing the buffer with the GPU would
attach a callback to get notified when the GPU's rendering-complete IRQ
fires, to update the scan-out address of the display, without having to
wake up userspace.
A driver must allocate a fence context for each execution ring that can
run in parallel. The function for this takes an argument with how many
contexts to allocate:
+ fence_context_alloc()
A fence is transient, one-shot deal. It is allocated and attached
to one or more dma-buf's. When the one that attached it is done, with
the pending operation, it can signal the fence:
+ fence_signal()
To have a rough approximation whether a fence is fired, call:
+ fence_is_signaled()
The dma-buf-mgr handles tracking, and waiting on, the fences associated
with a dma-buf.
The one pending on the fence can add an async callback:
+ fence_add_callback()
The callback can optionally be cancelled with:
+ fence_remove_callback()
To wait synchronously, optionally with a timeout:
+ fence_wait()
+ fence_wait_timeout()
When emitting a fence, call:
+ trace_fence_emit()
To annotate that a fence is blocking on another fence, call:
+ trace_fence_annotate_wait_on(fence, on_fence)
A default software-only implementation is provided, which can be used
by drivers attaching a fence to a buffer when they have no other means
for hw sync. But a memory backed fence is also envisioned, because it
is common that GPU's can write to, or poll on some memory location for
synchronization. For example:
fence = custom_get_fence(...);
if ((seqno_fence = to_seqno_fence(fence)) != NULL) {
dma_buf *fence_buf = seqno_fence->sync_buf;
get_dma_buf(fence_buf);
... tell the hw the memory location to wait ...
custom_wait_on(fence_buf, seqno_fence->seqno_ofs, fence->seqno);
} else {
/* fall-back to sw sync * /
fence_add_callback(fence, my_cb);
}
On SoC platforms, if some other hw mechanism is provided for synchronizing
between IP blocks, it could be supported as an alternate implementation
with it's own fence ops in a similar way.
enable_signaling callback is used to provide sw signaling in case a cpu
waiter is requested or no compatible hardware signaling could be used.
The intention is to provide a userspace interface (presumably via eventfd)
later, to be used in conjunction with dma-buf's mmap support for sw access
to buffers (or for userspace apps that would prefer to do their own
synchronization).
v1: Original
v2: After discussion w/ danvet and mlankhorst on #dri-devel, we decided
that dma-fence didn't need to care about the sw->hw signaling path
(it can be handled same as sw->sw case), and therefore the fence->ops
can be simplified and more handled in the core. So remove the signal,
add_callback, cancel_callback, and wait ops, and replace with a simple
enable_signaling() op which can be used to inform a fence supporting
hw->hw signaling that one or more devices which do not support hw
signaling are waiting (and therefore it should enable an irq or do
whatever is necessary in order that the CPU is notified when the
fence is passed).
v3: Fix locking fail in attach_fence() and get_fence()
v4: Remove tie-in w/ dma-buf.. after discussion w/ danvet and mlankorst
we decided that we need to be able to attach one fence to N dma-buf's,
so using the list_head in dma-fence struct would be problematic.
v5: [ Maarten Lankhorst ] Updated for dma-bikeshed-fence and dma-buf-manager.
v6: [ Maarten Lankhorst ] I removed dma_fence_cancel_callback and some comments
about checking if fence fired or not. This is broken by design.
waitqueue_active during destruction is now fatal, since the signaller
should be holding a reference in enable_signalling until it signalled
the fence. Pass the original dma_fence_cb along, and call __remove_wait
in the dma_fence_callback handler, so that no cleanup needs to be
performed.
v7: [ Maarten Lankhorst ] Set cb->func and only enable sw signaling if
fence wasn't signaled yet, for example for hardware fences that may
choose to signal blindly.
v8: [ Maarten Lankhorst ] Tons of tiny fixes, moved __dma_fence_init to
header and fixed include mess. dma-fence.h now includes dma-buf.h
All members are now initialized, so kmalloc can be used for
allocating a dma-fence. More documentation added.
v9: Change compiler bitfields to flags, change return type of
enable_signaling to bool. Rework dma_fence_wait. Added
dma_fence_is_signaled and dma_fence_wait_timeout.
s/dma// and change exports to non GPL. Added fence_is_signaled and
fence_enable_sw_signaling calls, add ability to override default
wait operation.
v10: remove event_queue, use a custom list, export try_to_wake_up from
scheduler. Remove fence lock and use a global spinlock instead,
this should hopefully remove all the locking headaches I was having
on trying to implement this. enable_signaling is called with this
lock held.
v11:
Use atomic ops for flags, lifting the need for some spin_lock_irqsaves.
However I kept the guarantee that after fence_signal returns, it is
guaranteed that enable_signaling has either been called to completion,
or will not be called any more.
Add contexts and seqno to base fence implementation. This allows you
to wait for less fences, by testing for seqno + signaled, and then only
wait on the later fence.
Add FENCE_TRACE, FENCE_WARN, and FENCE_ERR. This makes debugging easier.
An CONFIG_DEBUG_FENCE will be added to turn off the FENCE_TRACE
spam, and another runtime option can turn it off at runtime.
v12:
Add CONFIG_FENCE_TRACE. Add missing documentation for the fence->context
and fence->seqno members.
v13:
Fixup CONFIG_FENCE_TRACE kconfig description.
Move fence_context_alloc to fence.
Simplify fence_later.
Kill priv member to fence_cb.
v14:
Remove priv argument from fence_add_callback, oops!
v15:
Remove priv from documentation.
Explicitly include linux/atomic.h.
v16:
Add trace events.
Import changes required by android syncpoints.
v17:
Use wake_up_state instead of try_to_wake_up. (Colin Cross)
Fix up commit description for seqno_fence. (Rob Clark)
v18:
Rename release_fence to fence_release.
Move to drivers/dma-buf/.
Rename __fence_is_signaled and __fence_signal to *_locked.
Rename __fence_init to fence_init.
Make fence_default_wait return a signed long, and fix wait ops too.
