Since the only function executed by acpi_hotplug_execute() is
acpi_device_hotplug() and it only is called by the ACPI core,
simplify its definition so that it only takes two arguments, the
ACPI device object pointer and event code, rename it to
acpi_hotplug_schedule() and move its header from acpi_bus.h to
the ACPI core's internal header file internal.h. Modify the
definition of acpi_device_hotplug() so that its first argument is
an ACPI device object pointer and modify the definition of
struct acpi_hp_work accordingly.

Runtime-suspended devices are resumed during system suspend by
acpi_subsys_prepare() for two reasons: First, because they may need
to be reprogrammed in order to change their wakeup settings and,
second, because they may need to be operatonal for their children
to be successfully suspended. That is a problem, though, if there
are many runtime-suspended devices that need to be resumed this
way during system suspend, because the .prepare() PM callbacks of
devices are executed sequentially and the times taken by them
accumulate, which may increase the total system suspend time quite
a bit.
For this reason, move the resume of runtime-suspended devices up
to the next phase of device suspend (during system suspend), except
for the ones that have power.ignore_children set. The exception is
made, because the devices with power.ignore_children set may still
be necessary for their children to be successfully suspended (during
system suspend) and they won't be resumed automatically as a result
of the runtime resume of their children.

Sleep control and status registers need santity checks as well before
ACPI installs acpi_power_off to pm_power_off hook. The checking code in
acpi_enter_sleep_state() is too late, we should not allow a not-working
pm_power_off function to be hooked up.

ACPI table may export resource entry with 0 length.
But the current code interprets this kind of resource in a wrong way.
It will create a resource structure with
res->end = acpi_resource->start + acpi_resource->len - 1;
This patch fixes a problem on my machine that a platform device fails
to be created because one of its ACPI IO resource entry (start = 0,
end = 0, length = 0) is translated into a generic resource with
start = 0, end = 0xffffffff.

Use push and pop to both guarantee that the correct alignment is used,
and to restore the alignment to whatever it was before the header
was included.
It is reported that the #pragma pack(push/pop) directives are not supported
by the specific GCCs, but this patch still doesn't affect kernel build
as there are already #pragma pack([1]) directives used in the old ACPICA
headers, which means there shouldn't be GCCs that are currently used to
compile the ACPI kernels do not support #pragma pack() directives.

acpi_processor_set_throttling() uses set_cpus_allowed_ptr() to make
sure that the (struct acpi_processor)->acpi_processor_set_throttling()
callback will run on the right CPU. However, the function may be
called from a worker thread already bound to a different CPU in which
case that won't work.
Make acpi_processor_set_throttling() use work_on_cpu() as appropriate
instead of abusing set_cpus_allowed_ptr().

Since remove_dock_dependent_devices() is only called from acpi_dock_add()
and it only is called if the add_dock_dependent_device() adding the
dock station to its own list of dependent devices has failed, it is not
really necessary, because the dock station's list of dependent devices

Modify the SATA subsystem to add hotplug contexts to ACPI companions
of SATA devices and ports instead of registering special ACPI dock
operations using register_hotplug_dock_device().
That change will allow the entire code handling those special ACPI
dock operations to be dropped in the next commit.

operations for SATA devices add a .uevent() callback pointer to
struct acpi_hotplug_context and make dock_hotplug_event() use that
callback if available. Also rename the existing .event() callback
in struct acpi_hotplug_context to .notify() to avoid possible
confusion in the future.

Instead of requiring a set of special dock operations to be registered
via register_hotplug_dock_device() for each ACPI dock device, it is
much more straightforward to use callback pointers from the devices'
hotplug contexts if available.
For this reason, modify dock_hotplug_event() to use callback pointers
from the hotplug contexts of ACPI devices and fall back to using the
special dock operarions only if those callbacks are missing. Also
make the ACPI-based PCI hotplug (ACPIPHP) subsystem set the .fixup
callback pointer in the hotplug contexts of devices handled by it to
a new function, acpiphp_post_dock_fixup(), so that the dock station
driver can use the callbacks from those contexts instead of special
dock operations registered via register_hotplug_dock_device().
Along with the above changes drop the ACPIPHP's dock operations that
are not necessary any more.

We put fans to full speed in acpi_fan_suspend(), but that is only
needed in the hibernation case when we are generating hibernation
image, so this patch removes that when we are about to suspend or
poweroff.

Some system's ACPI video backlight control interface is broken and the
native backlight control interface should be used by default. This patch
sets the use_native_backlight parameter to true for those systems so
that video backlight control interface will not be created. For detailed
models that are added here, reference the following list.
Note that the user specified kernel cmdline option will always have the
highest priority, i.e. if use_native_backlight=0 is specified and the
system is in the DMI table, the video module will not skip registering
backlight interface for it.

on my Dell Latitude E6430 the table looks like this:

Notice that brightness values 0-5 are all mapped to 5. This means that
if userspace writes any value between 0 and 5 to the brightness sysfs attribute
and then reads it, it will always return 0, which is somewhat unexpected.
This is a problem for ie gnome-settings-daemon, which uses read-modify-write
logic when the users presses the brightness up or down keys. This is done
this way to take brightness changes from other sources into account.
On this specific laptop what happens once the brightness has been set to 0,
is that gsd reads 0, adds 5, writes 5, and on the next brightness up key press
again reads 0, so things get stuck at the lowest brightness setting.
Filtering out the duplicate table entries, makes any write to brightness
read back as the written value as one would expect, fixing this.

Intel BayTrail LPSS consists of two PWM controllers which can
be enumerated from ACPI namespace. This change will cause
platform device objects to be created for Intel BayTrail PWM
controllers which will allow the pwm-lpss driver to bind to them
and handle those devices.

idle_boot_override depends on x86 and ia64 now and it is not clear
whether or not it will be used on ARM or ARM64, so put the DMI
blacklist setting it in processor_core.c into a #if block so that
it is built for CONFIG_X86 or CONFIG_IA64 only to allow
processor_core.c to be compiled for ARM64.

Nothing cares about ACPI_PROCFS. This has been the case since v2.6.38.
This Kconfig symbol serves no purpose and its help text is now
misleading. It can safely be removed. If this symbol would be needed
again in the future it can be readded in a commit that adds code that
actually uses it.

acpi_pci_link_allocate_irq() can return negative gsi even if
entry != NULL. For that case we have a memory leak, so free

To allow user space to check which ACPI device object the dock
station is represented by, make acpi_dock_add() indicate to
platform_device_register_full() which ACPI device object should
be the companion of the new platform device.
This also ensures that the ACPI device object in question will
not go away while the dock platform device is present (which is
always).

Since we already know what the device's PNP IDs are when
acpi_device_is_battery() is called, it is not necessary to run
acpi_get_object_info() for the device in that function. Instead, if
acpi_device_is_battery() is passed a pointer to a struct acpi_device
object, it can use the list of PNP IDs from that object, so make that
happen and modify the function's header accordingly

The ACPI dock station code carries out an extra namespace scan
before the main one in order to find and register all of the dock
device objects. Then, it registers a notify handler for each of
them for handling dock events.
However, dock device objects need not be scanned for upfront. They
very well can be enumerated and registered during the first phase
of the main namespace scan, before attaching scan handlers and ACPI
drivers to ACPI device objects. Then, the dependent devices can be
added to the in the second phase. That makes it possible to drop
the extra namespace scan, so do it.
Moreover, it is not necessary to register notify handlers for all
of the dock stations' namespace nodes, becuase notifications may
be dispatched from the global notify handler for them. Do that and
drop two functions used for dock notify handling, acpi_dock_deferred_cb()
and dock_notify_handler(), that aren't necessary any more.
Finally, some dock station objects have _HID objects matching the
ACPI container scan handler which causes it to claim those objects
and try to handle their hotplug, but that is not a good idea,
because those objects have their own special hotplug handling anyway.
For this reason, the hotplug_notify flag should not be set for ACPI
device objects representing dock stations and the container scan
handler should be made ignore those objects, so make that happen.

After recent ACPI core changes acpi_bus_get_device() will always
succeed for dock station ACPI device objects, so show_docked()
should not use that function's return value as an indicator of
whether or not the dock device is present.
Make it use acpi_device_enumerated() for this purpose.

Sometimes, there might be bugs caused by unexpected AML which is compliant
to the Windows but not compliant to the Linux implementation.
There is a predefined validation mechanism implemented in ACPICA to repair
the unexpected AML evaluation results that are caused by the unexpected
AMLs. For example, BIOS may return misorder _CST result and the repair
mechanism can make an ascending order on the returned _CST package object
based on the C-state type.
This mechanism is quite useful to implement an AML interpreter with better
compliance with the real world where Windows is the de-facto standard and
BIOS codes are only tested on one platform thus not compliant to the
ACPI specification.
But if a compliance issue hasn't been figured out yet, it will be
difficult for developers to identify if the unexpected evaluation result
is caused by this mechanism or by the AML interpreter.
For example, _PR0 is expected to be a control method, but BIOS may use
Package: "Name(_PR0, Package(1) {P1PR})".
This boot option can disable the predefined validation mechanism so that
developers can make sure the root cause comes from the parser/executer.
This patch adds a new kernel parameter to disable this feature.
A build test has been made on a Dell Inspiron mini 1100 (i386 z530)
machine when this patch is applied and the corresponding boot test is
performed w/ or w/o the new kernel parameter specified.

The ACPI thermal driver defines acpi_thermal_resume() when

Add a new routine, acpi_lpss_set_ltr(), for setting latency tolerance
values for LPSS devices having LTR (Latency Tolerance Reporting)
registers. Add .bind()/.unbind() callbacks to lpss_handler to set
the LPSS devices' power.set_latency_tolerance callback pointers to
acpi_lpss_set_ltr() during device addition and to clear them on
device removal, respectively.
That will cause the device latency tolerance PM QoS to work for
the devices in question as documented.
This changeset includes a fix from Mika Westerberg.

In some cases it may be necessary to perform certain setup/cleanup
operations on a device object representing a physical device after
it has been associated with an ACPI companion by acpi_bind_one() or
before disassociating it from that companion by acpi_unbind_one(),
respectively. If there is a struct acpi_bus_type object for the
given device's bus type, the .setup()/.cleanup() callbacks from there
are executed for these purposes. However, an analogous mechanism will
be necessary for devices whose bus types don't have corresponding
struct acpi_bus_type objects and that have specific ACPI scan handlers.
For those devices, add new .bind() and .unbind() callbacks to struct
acpi_scan_handler that will be executed by acpi_platform_notify()
right after the given device has been associated with an ACPI
comapnion and by acpi_platform_notify_remove() right before calling
acpi_unbind_one() for that device, respectively.
To make that work for scan handlers registering new devices in their
.attach() callbacks, modify acpi_scan_attach_handler() to set the
ACPI device object's handler field before calling .attach() from the
scan handler at hand.

This patch enables resource dump functions for debugging purpose where
ACPI_DEBUG_OUTPUT is enabled. Such functions are useful for developers
to track kernel issues when composing debugging patches. They will be
optimized out during link stage for normal builds.
This patch updates the compilation condition used for the resource dump
related string tables to match the compilation environment used for
rsdump.c and rsdumpinfo.c.
This patch can help to improve the ACPICA release automation. Lv Zheng.

This command "test objects" will exercise the entire namespace by
writing new values to each data object, and ensuring that the write
was successful. The original value is then restored and verified.
This patch doesn't affect kernel behavior as the debugger is
currently not shipped in the Linux source tree.

The utility has the capability to load some various tables to test
features of ACPICA. However, there are enough of them that the output
of the utility became confusing. With this change, only the required
local tables are displayed (RSDP, XSDT, etc.) along with the actual
tables loaded via the command line specification. This makes the
default output simler and easier to understand. The -el command line
option restores the original behavior for testing purposes.
This patch doesn't affect kernel behavior as Linux doesn't use ACPICA
allocation tracking implementation.

This change improves the support for physical addresses in printf
debug statements and other output on both 32-bit and 64-bit hosts.
It consistently outputs the appropriate number of bytes for each
host. The %p specifier is unsatisfactory since it does not emit
uniform output on all hosts/clib implementations (on some, leading
zeros are not supported, leading to difficult-to-read output).

After commit 202317a573 (ACPI / scan: Add acpi_device objects for
all device nodes in the namespace) acpi_bus_get_device() will always
return 0 for dock devices in dock_notify(), so the dock station
docking code under ACPI_NOTIFY_DEVICE_CHECK will never be executed
and docking will not work as a result of that.
Fix the problem by making dock_notify() use acpi_device_enumerated()
to check the presence of the device instead of checking the return
value of acpi_bus_get_device().

Since the only existing caller of acpiphp_check_host_bridge(),
which is acpi_pci_root_scan_dependent(), already has a struct
acpi_device pointer needed to obtain the ACPIPHP context, it
doesn't make sense to execute acpi_bus_get_device() on its
handle in acpiphp_handle_to_bridge() just in order to get that
pointer back.
For this reason, modify acpiphp_check_host_bridge() to take
a struct acpi_device pointer as its argument and rearrange the
code accordingly.

Since acpi_bus_notify() is executed on all notifications for all
devices anyway, make it execute acpi_device_hotplug() for all
hotplug events instead of installing notify handlers pointing to
the same function for all hotplug devices.
This change reduces both the size and complexity of ACPI-based device
hotplug code. Moreover, since acpi_device_hotplug() only does
significant things for devices that have either an ACPI scan handler,
or a hotplug context with .eject() defined, and those devices
had notify handlers pointing to acpi_hotplug_notify_cb() installed
before anyway, this modification shouldn't change functionality.

To avoid the need to install a hotplug notify handler for each ACPI
namespace node representing a device and having a matching scan
handler, move the check whether or not the ejection of the given
device is enabled through its scan handler from acpi_hotplug_notify_cb()
to acpi_generic_hotplug_event(). Also, move the execution of
ACPI_OST_SC_EJECT_IN_PROGRESS _OST to acpi_generic_hotplug_event(),
because in acpi_hotplug_notify_cb() or in acpi_eject_store() we really
don't know whether or not the eject is going to be in progress (for
example, acpi_hotplug_execute() may still fail without queuing up the
work item).

The ACPI-based PCI hotplug (ACPIPHP) code currently attaches its
hotplug context objects directly to ACPI namespace nodes representing
hotplug devices. However, after recent changes causing struct
acpi_device to be created for every namespace node representing a
device (regardless of its status), that is not necessary any more.
Moreover, it's vulnerable to the theoretical issue that the ACPI
handle passed in the context between handle_hotplug_event() and
hotplug_event_work() may become invalid in the meantime (as a
result of a concurrent table unload).
In principle, this issue might be addressed by adding a non-empty
release handler for ACPIPHP hotplug context objects analogous to
acpi_scan_drop_device(), but that would duplicate the code in that
function and in acpi_device_del_work_fn(). For this reason, it's
better to modify ACPIPHP to attach its device hotplug contexts to
struct device objects representing hotplug devices and make it
use acpi_hotplug_notify_cb() as its notify handler. At the same
time, acpi_device_hotplug() can be modified to dispatch the new
.hp.event() callback pointing to acpiphp_hotplug_event() from ACPI
device objects associated with PCI devices or use the generic
ACPI device hotplug code for device objects with matching scan
handlers.
This allows the existing code duplication between ACPIPHP and the
ACPI core to be reduced too and makes further ACPI-based device
hotplug consolidation possible.

There is a slight possibility for the ACPI device object pointed to
by adev in acpi_hotplug_notify_cb() to become invalid between the
acpi_bus_get_device() that it comes from and the subsequent dereference
of that pointer under get_device(). Namely, if acpi_scan_drop_device()
runs in parallel with acpi_hotplug_notify_cb(), acpi_device_del_work_fn()
queued up by it may delete the device object in question right after
a successful execution of acpi_bus_get_device() in acpi_bus_notify().
An analogous problem is present in acpi_bus_notify() where the device
pointer coming from acpi_bus_get_device() may become invalid before
it subsequent dereference in the "if" block.
To prevent that from happening, introduce a new function,
acpi_bus_get_acpi_device(), working analogously to acpi_bus_get_device()
except that it will grab a reference to the ACPI device object returned
by it and it will do that under the ACPICA's namespace mutex. Then,
make both acpi_hotplug_notify_cb() and acpi_bus_notify() use
acpi_bus_get_acpi_device() instead of acpi_bus_get_device() so as to
ensure that the pointers used by them will not become stale at one
point.
In addition to that, introduce acpi_bus_put_acpi_device() as a wrapper
around put_device() to be used along with acpi_bus_get_acpi_device()
and make the (new) users of the latter use acpi_bus_put_acpi_device()
too.

Introduce a new function, acpi_get_data_full(), working in analogy
with acpi_get_data() except that it can execute a callback provided
as its 4th argument right after acpi_ns_get_attached_data() has
returned a success.
That will allow Linux to reference count the object pointed to by
*data before the namespace mutex is released so as to ensure that it
will not be freed going forward until the reference to it acquired
by acpi_get_data_full() is dropped.

ACPI hardware reduced mode exists to allow newer platforms to use a
simpler form of ACPI that does not require supporting legacy versions
of the specification and their associated hardware. This mode was
introduced in the ACPI 5.0 specification.
The ACPI hardware reduced mode is supposed to be used on systems
having the HW_REDUCED_ACPI flag set in the FADT. ACPICA checks
that flag to determine whether or not it should work in the HW
reduced mode and there are pieces of code in it that will never
be used in that case.
Since some architecutres will always use the ACPI HW reduced mode,
it doesn't make sense for them to ever compile support for anything
else. Thus, they should set the flag ACPI_REDUCED_HARDWARE to TRUE
in the ACPICA source. To enable them to do that, introduce a new
kernel configuration option, CONFIG_ACPI_REDUCED_HARDWARE_ONLY, that
will cause the ACPICA's ACPI_REDUCED_HARDWARE flag to be TRUE when
set.
Introducing this configuration item is based on suggestions from Lv
Zheng saying that this does not belong in ACPICA, but rather to the
Linux kernel itself.

This is becase device->handler is NULL in acpi_device_hotplug().
This case was used to fail in acpi_hotplug_notify_cb() as the target
had no acpi_deivce. However, acpi_device now exists after ejection.
Added a check to verify if acpi_device->handler is valid for an
eject request in acpi_hotplug_notify_cb(). Note that handler passed
from an argument is still valid while acpi_device->handler is NULL.

On HP EliteBook Revolve 810 the ACPI backlight device doesn't work as
expected. For example when resuming from system sleep, it seems to lose
backlight settings.
Forcing Intel driver fixes the problem so add this machine the ACPI
video detect blacklist.

There is currently no facility in ACPI to express the hookup of voltage
regulators, the expectation is that the regulators that exist in the
system will be handled transparently by firmware if they need software
control at all. This means that if for some reason the regulator API is
enabled on such a system it should assume that any supplies that devices
need are provided by the system at all relevant times without any software
intervention.
Tell the regulator core to make this assumption by calling
regulator_has_full_constraints(). Do this as soon as we know we are using
ACPI so that the information is available to the regulator core as early
as possible. This will cause the regulator core to pretend that there is
an always on regulator supplying any supply that is requested but that has
not otherwise been mapped which is the behaviour expected on a system with
ACPI.
Should the ability to specify regulators be added in future revisions of
ACPI then once we have support for ACPI mappings in the kernel the same
assumptions will apply. It is also likely that systems will default to a
mode of operation which does not require any interpretation of these
mappings in order to be compatible with existing operating system releases
so it should remain safe to make these assumptions even if the mappings
exist but are not supported by the kernel.

The use of "bool" is not safe for ACPICA code where it is originally using
a "BOOLEAN" defined as "unsigned char".
This patch removes the only "bool" usage from kernel source tree to reduce
the source code differences between Linux and ACPICA upstream.
This patch is required by future acpidump release automation.

The ACPI device PM code in device_pm.c uses a special function,
acpi_dev_pm_get_node(), to obtain an ACPI companion object of a given
device. However, that is not necessary any more after recent changes
that introduced the ACPI_COMPANION() macro serving exactly the same
purpose, but working in a much more straightforward way. For this
reason, drop acpi_dev_pm_get_node() and use ACPI_COMPANION() instead
of it everywhere.

Commit b981513f80 (ACPI / scan: bail out early if failed to parse
APIC ID for CPU) emits an error message if ACPI processor driver fails
to query APIC ID for the CPU.
Originally it's designed to catch BIOS bugs for CPU hot-addition. But
it accidently reveals another type of BIOS bug that:
1) BIOS implements ACPI objects for all possible instead of present
CPUs. (It's valid to do that per ACPI specification.)
2) BIOS doesn't implement the _STA method for CPU objects. OSPM assumes
that all CPU objects are present and functioning and attempts to
use those CPU objects for CPU enumeration, which then triggers the
error message. According to ACPI spec, BIOS should implement _STA
for those absent CPUs at least.
Though it's a BIOS bug in essential, there are some BIOSes in the fields
which are implmented in this way. So reduce the log level from ERR to
DEBUG to accommodate these existing BIOSes.

Usually, 0 is returned for success in int-returning functions and
negative value are returned on failure, but in processor_core.c, some
function return 1 for success and 0 for failure which causes confusion
to happen sometimes, so modify the functions in question to follow the
common convention..
