Commit 57295073b6 ("ASoC: dapm: Implement mixer input auto-disable")
added support for autodisable controls, controls whose values are only
written to the hardware when their respective widgets are powered up.
But it only added support for controls based on the mixer abstraction.
This patch add support for mux controls (DAPM controls based on the
enum abstraction) to be auto-disabled as well. As each mux can only have
a single control, there is no need to tie the autodisable widget to the
inputs (as is done for the mixer controls) it can be tided directly to
the mux widget itself.
Note that it is assumed that the first entry in a autodisable mux
control will always represent the off state for the mux and is what the
mux will be set to whilst it is disabled.

This makes it a little easier to follow what is happening in debugfs.
Additionally is also useful in facilitating work to add autodisable
muxes because the control name is already used for the mux widget and
thus shouldn't be reused for the autodisable widget.

Currently drivers are responsible for managing the bias_level field of
their DAPM context. The DAPM state itself is managed by the DAPM core
though and the core has certain expectations on how and when the bias_level
field should be updated. If drivers don't adhere to these undefined
behavior can occur.
This patch adds a few helper functions for manipulating the DAPM context
state, each function with a description on when it should be used and what
its effects are. This will also help us to move more of the bias_level
management from drivers to the DAPM core.
For convenience also add snd_soc_codec_* wrappers around these helpers.

There are no more users of this field left so it can finally be removed.
New users should use snd_soc_dapm_to_codec(w->dapm);
The reason why it is removed is because it doesn't fit to well anymore in
the componentized ASoC hierarchy, where DAPM works on the snd_soc_component
level. And the alternative of snd_soc_dapm_to_codec(w->dapm) typically
generates the same amount of code, so there is really no reason to keep it.

The only user of the async I/O support in ASoC is SPI which was using it to
avoid needless context thrashing and minimise controller runtime PM bounces.
The SPI framework has now been enhanced so that even normal spi_sync() calls
won't suffer these effects so we don't need to handle this in ASoC and in
fact it can be more efficient not to since we don't need to set up and tear
down the buffers needed to manage asynchronous I/O.
The async completions that DAPM does are left in place so drivers can use
them, they are very cheap if there is no asynchronous work queued.

For legacy reasons the ASoC framework assumes that a CODEC INPUT or OUTPUT
widget that is not explicitly connected to a external source or sink is
potentially connected to a source or a sink and hence the framework treats
the widget itself as source (for INPUT) or sink (for OUTPUT). For this
reason a INPUT or OUTPUT widget that is really not connected needs to be
explicitly marked as so.
Setting the card's fully_routed flag will cause the ASoC core, once that all
widgets and routes have been registered, to go through the list of all
widgets and mark all INPUT and OUTPUT that are not externally connected as
non-connected. This essentially negates the default behaviour of treating
INPUT or OUTPUT widgets without external routes as sources or sinks.
This patch takes a different approach while getting the same result. Instead
of first marking INPUT and OUTPUT widgets as sinks/sources and then later
marking them as non-connected, just never mark them as a sink or a source if
the fully_routed flag is set on a card.
This requires a lot less code and also results in a slightly faster card
initialization since there is no need to iterate over all widgets and check
whether the INPUT and OUTPUT widgets are connected or not.

Currently we cache the number of input and output paths going to/from a
widget only within a power update sequence. But not in between power update
sequences.
But we know how changes to the DAPM graph affect the number of input (form a
source) and output (to a sink) paths of a widget and only need to
recalculate them if a operation has been performed that might have changed
them.
* Adding/removing or connecting/disconnecting a path means that the for
the source of the path the number of output paths can change and for
the sink the number of input paths can change.
* Connecting/disconnecting a widget has the same effect has connecting/
disconnecting all paths of the widget. So for the widget itself the
number of inputs and outputs can change, for all sinks of the widget
the number of inputs can change and for all sources of the widget the
number of outputs can change.
* Activating/Deactivating a stream can either change the number of
outputs on the sources of the widget associated with the stream or the
number of inputs on the sinks.
Instead of always invalidating all cached numbers of input and output paths
for each power up or down sequence this patch restructures the code to only
invalidate the cached numbers when a operation that might change them has
been performed. This can greatly reduce the number of DAPM power checks for
some very common operations.
Since per DAPM operation typically only either change the number of inputs
or outputs the number of path checks is reduced by at least 50%. The number
of neighbor checks is also reduced about the same percentage, but since the
number of neighbors encountered when walking from sink to source is not the
same as when walking from source to sink the actual numbers will slightly
vary from card to card (e.g. for a mixer we see 1 neighbor when walking from
source to sink, but the number of inputs neighbors when walking from source
to sink).
Bigger improvements can be observed for widgets with multiple connected
inputs and output (e.g. mixers probably being the most widespread form of
this). Previously we had to re-calculate the number of inputs and outputs
on all input and output paths. With this change we only have to re-calculate
the number of outputs on the input path that got changed and the number of
inputs on the output paths.
E.g. imagine the following example:
A --> B ----.
v
M --> N --> Z <-- S <-- R
|
v
X
Widget Z has multiple input paths, if any change was made that cause Z to be
marked as dirty the power state of Z has to be re-computed. This requires to
know the number of inputs and outputs of Z, which requires to know the
number of inputs and outputs of all widgets on all paths from or to Z.
Previously this meant re-computing all inputs and outputs of all the path
going into or out of Z. With this patch in place only paths that actually
have changed need to be re-computed.
If the system is idle (or the part of the system affected by the changed
path) the number of path checks drops to either 0 or 1, regardless of how
large or complex the DAPM context is. 0 if there is no connected sink and no
connected source. 1 if there is either a connected source or sink, but not
both. The number of neighbor checks again will scale accordingly and will be
a constant number that is the number of inputs or outputs of the widget for
which we did the path check.
When loading a state file or switching between different profiles typically
multiple mixer and mux settings are changed, so we see the benefit of this
patch multiplied for these kinds of operations.
Testing with the ADAU1761 shows the following changes in DAPM stats for

Supply widgets are somewhat special and not all kinds of paths to or from
supply widgets make sense. This patch adds a few sanity checks that errors
out during the path instantiation for those invalid paths. This will prevent
drivers to depend on weird behavior resulting from such paths as well as
will allow the DAPM algorithms to assume that they never see such paths.
This patch adds checks for the following three invalid types of paths:
* A path with a non-supply widget as a source connected to a supply
widget as a sink. Such a path has no effect on either of the two
connected widgets.
* Paths with a connected() callback that have a non-supply widget as the
source. The DAPM algorithm only uses the conneceted() callback for
supply widget power checks. And since it prevents caching of the DAPM
state there is no intention to make it more generic as it has
negative performance implications.
* Paths which connect a supply to a mixer or mux via a control. Controls
are only meant to affect the routing of audio data.

The state of endpoint widgets is affected by that card's power state.
Endpoint widgets that do no have the ignore_suspend flag set will be
considered inactive during suspend. So they have to be re-checked and marked
dirty after the card's power state changes. Currently the input and output
widgets are marked dirty instead, this works most of the time since
typically a path from one endpoint to another will go via a input or output
widget. But marking the endpoints dirty is technically more correct and will
also work for odd corner cases.

Supply widgets do not count towards the input and output widgets of their
neighbors and for supply widgets themselves we do not care for the number
of input or output paths. This means that a path that connects to a supply
widget effectively behaves the same as a path that as the weak property set.
This patch adds a new path flag that gets set to true when the path is
connected to at least one supply widget. If a path with the flag set is
encountered in is_connected_{input,output}_ep() is is skipped in the same
way that weak paths are skipped. This slightly brings down the number of
path checks.
Since both the weak and the supply flag are implemented as bitfields which
are stored in the same word there is no runtime overhead due to checking
both rather than just one and also the size of the path struct is not
increased by this patch. Another advantage is that we do not have to handle
supply widgets in is_connected_{input,output}_ep() anymore since it will
never be called for supply widgets. The only exception is from
dapm_widget_power_read_file() where a check is added to special case supply
widgets.
Testing with the ADAU1761, which has a handful of supply widgets, shows the
following changes in the DAPM stats for a playback stream start.

DAPM widgets can be classified into four categories:
* supply: Supply widgets do not affect the power state of their
non-supply widget neighbors and unlike other widgets a
supply widget is not powered up when it is on an active
path, but when at least on of its neighbors is powered up.
* source: A source is a widget that receives data from outside the
DAPM graph or generates data. This can for example be a
microphone, the playback DMA or a signal generator. A source
widget will be considered powered up if there is an active
path to a sink widget.
* sink: A sink is a widget that transmits data to somewhere outside
of the DAPM graph. This can e.g. be a speaker or the capture
DMA. A sink widget will be considered powered up if there is
an active path from a source widget.
* normal: Normal widgets are widgets not covered by the categories
above. A normal widget will be considered powered up if it
is on an active path between a source widget and a sink
widget.
The way the number of input and output paths for a widget is calculated
depends on its category. There are a bunch of factors which decide which
category a widget is. Currently there is no formal classification of these
categories and we calculate the category of the widget based on these
factors whenever we want to know it. This is at least once for every widget
during each power update sequence. The factors which determine the category
of the widgets are mostly static though and if at all change rather seldom.
This patch introduces three new per widget flags, one for each of non-normal
widgets categories. Instead of re-computing the category each time we want
to know them the flags will be checked. For the majority of widgets the
category is solely determined by the widget id, which means it never changes
and only has to be set once when the widget is created. The only widgets
with dynamic categories are:
snd_soc_dapm_dai_out: Is considered a sink iff the capture stream is
active, otherwise normal.
snd_soc_dapm_dai_in: Is considered a source iff the playback stream
is active, otherwise normal.
snd_soc_dapm_input: Is considered a sink iff it has no outgoing
paths, otherwise normal.
snd_soc_dapm_output: Is considered a source iff it has no incoming
paths, otherwise normal.
snd_soc_dapm_line: Is considered a sink iff it has no outgoing paths
and is considered a source iff it has no incoming paths,
otherwise normal.
For snd_soc_dapm_dai_out/snd_soc_dapm_dai_in widgets the category will be
updated when a stream is started or stopped. For the other dynamic widgets
the category will be updated when a path connecting to it is added or
removed.
Introducing those new widget categories allows to make
is_connected_{output,input}_ep, which are among the hottest paths of the
DAPM algorithm, more generic and significantly shorter.
The before and after sizes for is_connected_{output,input}_ep are:
On ARM (defconfig + CONFIG_SND_SOC):
function old new delta
is_connected_output_ep 480 340 -140
is_connected_input_ep 456 352 -104
On amd64 (defconfig + CONFIG_SND_SOC):
function old new delta
is_connected_output_ep 579 427 -152
is_connected_input_ep 563 427 -136
Which is about a 25%-30% decrease, other architectures are expected to have
similar numbers. At the same time the size of the snd_soc_dapm_widget struct
does not change since the new flags are stored in the same word as the
existing flags.
Note: that since the per widget 'ext' flag was only used to decide whether a
snd_soc_dapm_input or snd_soc_dapm_output widget was a source or a sink it
is now unused and can be removed.

Controls on a path only have an effect if the sink on the path is either a
mixer or mux widget. Currently we sort of silently ignore controls on other
paths, but since they don't do anything having them on other paths does not
make much sense and it is probably safe to assume that if we see such a path
it is a mistake in the driver that registered the path. This patch modifies
snd_soc_dapm_add_path() to report an error if a path with and control is
encountered where we didn't expect a control. This also allows to simplify
the code quite a bit.

The 'walked' flag was used to avoid walking paths that have already been
walked. But since we started caching the number of inputs and outputs of a
path we never actually get into a situation where we try to walk a path that
has the 'walked' flag set.
There are two cases in which we can end up walking a path multiple times
within a single run of is_connected_output_ep() or is_connected_input_ep().
1) If a path splits up and rejoins later:
.--> C ---v
A -> B E --> F
'--> D ---^
When walking from A to F we'll end up at E twice, once via C and once via D.
But since we do a depth first search we'll fully discover the path and
initialize the number of outputs/inputs of the widget the first time we get
there. The second time we get there we'll use the cached value and not
bother to check any of the paths again. So we'll never see a path where
'walked' is set in this case.
2) If there is a circle:
A --> B <-- C <-.--> F
'--> D ---'
When walking from A to F we'll end up twice at B. But since there is a
circle the 'walking' flag will still be set on B once we get there the
second time. This means we won't look at any of it's outgoing paths. So in
this case we won't ever see a path where 'walked' is set either.
So it is safe to remove the flag. This on one hand means we remove some
always true checks from one of the hottest paths of the DAPM algorithm and
on the other hand means we do not have to do the tedious clearing of the
flag after checking the number inputs or outputs of a widget.

dapm_adc_check_power() checks if the widget is active, if yes it only checks
whether there are any connected input paths. Otherwise it calls
dapm_generic_check_power() which will check for both connected input and
output paths. But the function that checks for connected output paths will
return true if the widget is a active sink. Which means the generic power
check function will work just fine and there is no need for a special power
check function.
The same applies for dapm_dac_check_power(), but with input and output paths
reversed.

There is a substantial amount of drivers that in go to SND_SOC_BIAS_OFF on
suspend and go back to SND_SOC_BIAS_SUSPEND on resume (Often this is even
the only thing done in the suspend and resume handlers). This patch
introduces a new suspend_bias_off flag, which when set by a driver will let
the ASoC core automatically put the device's DAPM context at the
SND_SOC_BIAS_OFF level during suspend. Once the device is resumed the DAPM
context will go back to SND_SOC_BIAS_STANDBY (if the context is idle,
otherwise to SND_SOC_BIAS_ON).

This patch adds full DAPM support at the component level. Previously there was
only full DAPM support for CODECs and partial DAPM support (e.g. no Mixers nor
MUXs) for platforms. Having DAPM support at the component level will allow all
types of components to use DAPM and also help in consolidating the DAPM support
between CODECs and platforms.
Since the DAPM context is directly embedded into the snd_soc_codec and
snd_soc_platform struct and the 'dapm' field is directly referenced in a lot of
drivers moving the field just right now is not possible without causing code
churn. The approach this patch takes is to add two new fields to the component
struct. One field which is the pointer to the actual DAPM context used by the
component and one DAPM context that will be used as the default if no other
context was specified. For CODECs and platforms the pointer is initialized to
point to the CODEC or platform DAPM context. All generic code when referencing
a component's DAPM struct will go via the pointer. This will make it possible to
eventually seamlessly move the DAPM context from snd_soc_codec and
snd_soc_platform struct over once all direct references have been eliminated.

Currently the DAPM code directly looks at the CODEC driver struct to get a
handle to the set_bias_level() callback. This patch adds a new set_bias_level()
callback to the DAPM context struct. The DAPM code will use this new callback
instead of the CODEC callback. For CODECs the new callback is set up to call the
CODEC specific set_bias_level callback(). Not looking directly at the CODEC
driver struct will allow non CODEC DAPM contexts to implement a set_bias_level()
callback.
This is also similar to how the seq_notifier() and stream_event() callbacks are
currently handled.

Currently only pins in CODEC DAPM contexts are automatically marked as
non-connected if the card has the fully_routed flag set. This makes sense since
widgets which qualify for auto-disconnection are only found in CODEC DAPM
contexts. But with componentisation this is going to change, so consider all
widgets for auto-disconnection.
Also it is probably faster to walk the widgets list only once rather than once
for each CODEC.

Move the name_prefix from the CODEC struct to the component struct. This will
eventually allow to specify prefixes for all types of components. It is also
necessary to make the DAPM code component type independent (i.e. a DAPM context
does not need to know whether it belongs to a CODEC or a platform or something
else).

initial after boot state of kcontrol appears to not change but where

Fix this by doing snd_soc_test_bits() unconditionally as it was before but
by using separate flags for kcontrol and register state changes. This allow

For CODEC to CODEC DAI links the paths are created in snd_soc_dapm_new_pcm().
Also for CODEC to CODEC links the widgets are connected cross-over via a DAI
link widget, meaning that the capture widget of one CODEC will be connected to
the playback widget of the other and vice versa. Whereas
snd_soc_dapm_connect_dai_link_widgets() directly connects the playback widget of
the CPU DAI to the playback widget of the CODEC DAI and the capture widget of
the CPU DAI to the capture widget of the CODEC DAI. So not skipping
CODEC<->CODEC links in snd_soc_dapm_connect_dai_link_widgets() will create
incorrect connections between the two CODECs which will cause DAPM to detect
active paths where there are none and unnecessarily power up widgets.

We currently have two very similar IO abstractions in ASoC, one for CODECs, the
other for platforms. Moving this to the component level will allow us to unify
those two. It will also enable us to move the standard kcontrol helpers as well
as DAPM support to the component level.
The new component level abstraction layer is primarily build around regmap.
There is a per component pointer for the regmap instance for the underlying
device. There are four new function snd_soc_component_read(),
snd_soc_component_write(), snd_soc_component_update_bits() and
snd_soc_component_update_bits_async(). They have the same signature as their
regmap counter-part and will internally forward the call one-to-one to regmap.
If the component it not using regmap it will fallback to using the custom IO
callbacks. This is done to be able to support drivers that haven't been
converted to regmap yet, but it is expected that this will eventually be removed
in the future once all component drivers have been converted to regmap.

Commit 9e1fda4ae158 ("ASoC: dapm: Implement mixer input auto-disable")
is trying to free the widget it allocated by snd_soc_dapm_new_control()
call in dapm_kcontrol_data_alloc() by adding kfree(data->widget) to
dapm_kcontrol_free().
This is causing a widget double free with auto-disabled DAPM kcontrols
in sound card unregistration because widgets are already freed before
dapm_kcontrol_free() is called.
Reason for that is all widgets are added into dapm->card->widgets list
in snd_soc_dapm_new_control() and freed in dapm_free_widgets() during
execution of snd_soc_dapm_free().
Now snd_soc_dapm_free() calls for different DAPM contexts happens before
snd_card_free() call from where the call chain to dapm_kcontrol_free()
begins:
soc_cleanup_card_resources()
soc_remove_dai_links()
soc_remove_link_dais()
snd_soc_dapm_free(&cpu_dai->dapm)
soc_remove_link_components()
soc_remove_platform()
snd_soc_dapm_free(&platform->dapm)
soc_remove_codec()
snd_soc_dapm_free(&codec->dapm)
snd_soc_dapm_free(&card->dapm)
snd_card_free()
snd_card_do_free()
snd_device_free_all()
snd_device_free()
snd_ctl_dev_free()
snd_ctl_remove()
snd_ctl_free_one()
dapm_kcontrol_free()
This wasn't making harm with ordinary DAPM kcontrols since data->widget is NULL for
them.

In order to avoid trying to use an external clock or supply for an
on-chip supply prior to it being enabled move the clock and regulator
supply events to a separate step in DAPM sequencing from normal supply
events.
This should have minimal practical impact since these widgets are sorted
using SND_SOC_NOPM which is a negative value and hence sorted
separately to any real register writes, though it may be relevant if
supplies have event callbacks only.
Signed-off-by: Mark Brown <broonie@linaro.org>
Within a DAPM sequence we normally don't care about when exactly a register
write has completed so long as they happen in the order we requested. This
means that we can issue most of the writes we do asynchronously which
should maximise the ability of the underlying frameworks to keep the
hardware busy, providing a small performance improvement on some systems.
We currently ensure that all writes are completed both when changing to a
different device and when calling into the regulator and clock frameworks.
This should ensure that the previous ordering is maintained.
We also ensure that writes are completed prior to calling into widget
event functions since some event functions implement delays. This
should be improved in future so that widgets can disable this sync in
order to add extra writes.

This patch adds support for virtual DAPM mixer controls. They are similar to
virtual DAPM enums. There is no hardware register backing the control, so
changing the control's value wont have any direct effect on the hardware. But it
still influences the DAPM graph by causing the path it sits on to be connected
or disconnected. This in turn can cause power changes for some of the widgets on

ASoC automatically creates snd_soc_dapm_dai_in and snd_soc_dapm_dai_out
widgets for DAI drivers, and adds them to the list. Later on, ASoC
creates automatic routes between these widgets and a widget with a
stream name.
We look for a snd_soc_dapm_dai_in or snd_soc_dapm_dai_out widget, and
use this to obtain the DAI structure. We then scan all widgets for
any with a stream name refering to either the capture or the playback
stream, and create routes.
If you have both a snd_soc_dapm_dai_in and a snd_soc_dapm_dai_out
referring to the same DAI structure, this ends up creating one set of
routes for the DAI for the snd_soc_dapm_dai_in widget, and a duplicated
set of routes for the snd_soc_dapm_dai_out widget.
Fix this by checking that the stream name for the widget matches the
DAI widget name.

Some devices have the problem that if a internal audio signal source is disabled
the output of the source becomes undefined or goes to a undesired state (E.g.
DAC output goes to ground instead of VMID). In this case it is necessary, in
order to avoid unwanted clicks and pops, to disable any mixer input the signal
feeds into or to active a mute control along the path to the output. Often it is
still desirable to expose the same mixer input control to userspace, so cerain
paths can sill be disabled manually. This means we can not use conventional DAPM
to manage the mixer input control. This patch implements a method for letting
DAPM overwrite the state of a userspace visible control. I.e. DAPM will disable
the control if the path on which the control sits becomes inactive. Userspace
will then only see a cached copy of the controls state. Once DAPM powers the
path up again it will sync the userspace setting with the hardware and give
control back to userspace.
To implement this a new widget type is introduced. One widget of this type will
be created for each DAPM kcontrol which has the auto-disable feature enabled.
For each path that is controlled by the kcontrol the widget will be connected to
the source of that path. The new widget type behaves like a supply widget,
which means it will power up if one of its sinks are powered up and will only
power down if all of its sinks are powered down. In order to only have the mixer
input enabled when the source signal is valid the new widget type will be
disabled before all other widget types and only be enabled after all other
widget types.
E.g. consider the following simplified example. A DAC is connected to a mixer
and the mixer has a control to enable or disable the signal from the DAC.

If the control has the auto-disable feature enabled we'll create a widget for
the control. This widget is connected to the DAC as it is the source for the
mixer input. If the DAC powers up the control widget powers up and if the DAC
powers down the control widget is powered down. As long as the control widget
is powered down the hardware input control is kept disabled and if it is enabled
userspace can freely change the control's state.

list_first_entry() will always return a valid pointer, even if the list is
empty. So the check whether path is NULL will always be false. So we end up
calling dapm_create_or_share_mixmux_kcontrol() with a path struct that points
right in the middle of the widget struct and by trying to modify the path the
widgets memory will become corrupted. Fix this by using list_emtpy() to check if
the widget doesn't have any paths.

snd_soc_dapm_add_path() is similar to snd_soc_dapm_add_route() except that it
expects the pointer to the source and sink widgets instead of their names. This
allows us to simplify the case where we already have a pointer to widgets. (E.g.
as we have in snd_soc_dapm_link_dai_widgets()). snd_soc_dapm_add_route() will be
updated to just look up the widget and then use snd_soc_dapm_add_path() to

Currently the DAPM code is limited to only setting or clearing a single bit in a
register to power a widget up or down. This patch extends the DAPM code to be
more flexible in that regard and allow widgets to use arbitrary values to be
used to put a widget in either on or off state.
Since the snd_soc_dapm_widget struct already contains a on_val and off_val field
no additional fields need to be added and in fact the invert field can even be
removed. Also the generated code is slightly smaller.

Currently we store for each path which control (if any at all) is associated
with that control. But we are only ever interested in the reverse relationship,
i.e. we want to know all the paths a certain control is associated with. This is
currently implemented by always iterating over all paths. This patch updates the
code to keep a list for each control which contains all the paths that are
associated with that control. This improves the run time of e.g.
soc_dapm_mixer_update_power() and soc_dapm_mux_update_power() from O(n) (with n
being the number of paths for the card) to O(1).

The 'value' field is really per control and not per widget. Currently it is only
used for virtual MUXes, which only have one control per widget. So in that case
there is not so much of a difference between whether it is stored per widget or
per control. Moving the 'value' field from the widget to the control will allow
us to use it also for cases where we have more than one control per widget. E.g.
for mixers with multiple input controls.

DAPM operations are always performed on the card as a whole. Yet (primarily for
historic reasons) dapm_power_widgets() takes a DAPM context as its parameter.
The DAPM context is mainly used to look up a pointer to the card. The same is
true for a couple of functions that are being called from dapm_power_widgets().
This patch changes the signature of dapm_power_widgets() and a couple of related
functions to take a snd_soc_card instead of a snd_soc_dapm_context.
Some of the functions also use the DAPM's device to print error and debug
messages. This can be a bit confusing though since this means the messages for
all widgets, also those from other contexts, will be printed with that device.
The patch updates those cases to use the device of the widget's DAPM context.

The update field of a DAPM context is only assigned while the card's dapm_mutex
is locked, the field is also cleared again while the mutex is stil locked. So
there will only ever be one DAPM context at a time with a non-NULL update field.
So it is safe to move the update field from the DAPM context struct to the card
struct. Doing so will allow further cleanups in this area.

while card->dapm_mutex is being held. To allow CODEC drivers to run a register

Currently when updating a control that is shared between multiple widgets the
whole power-up/power-down sequence is being run once for each widget. The
control register is updated during the first run, which means the CODEC internal
routing is also updated for all widgets during this first run. The input and
output paths for each widgets are only updated though during the respective run
for that widget. This leads to a slight inconsistency between the CODEC's
internal state and ASoC's state, which causes non optimal behavior in regard to
click and pop avoidance.
E.g. consider the following setup where two MUXs share the same control.
+------+
A1 ------| |
| MUX1 |----- C1
B1 ------| |
+------+
|
control ---+
|
+------+
A2 ------| |
| MUX2 |----- C2
B2 ------| |
+------+
If the control is updated to switch the MUXs from input A to input B with the
current code the power-up/power-down sequence will look like this:
Run soc_dapm_mux_update_power for MUX1
Power-down A1
Update MUXing
Power-up B1
Run soc_dapm_mux_update_power for MUX2
Power-down A2
(Update MUXing)
Power-up B2
Note that the second 'Update Muxing' is a no-op, since the register was already
updated.
While the preferred order for avoiding pops and clicks should be:
Run soc_dapm_mux_update_power for control
Power-down A1
Power-down A2
Update MUXing
Power-up B1
Power-up B2
This patch changes the behavior to the later by running the updates for all
widgets that the control is attached to at the same time.
The new code is also a bit simpler since callers of
soc_dapm_{mux,muxer}_update_power don't have to loop over each widget anymore
and neither do we need to keep track for which of the kcontrol's widgets the
current update is.

only need to clear the paths we actually walked. This means we can split

paths we have not yet walked.
This reduces the number of operations we need to perform and improves

This is the equivalent of commit af46800 "ASoC: Implement mux control
sharing", but applied to mixers instead of muxes.
This allows a single control to affect multiple mixer widgets at once,
which is useful when there is a single set of register bits that affects
multiple mixers in HW, for example both the L and R mixers of a stereo
path.
Without this, you either:
1) End up with multiple controls that affect the same register bits, but
whose DAPM state falls out of sync with HW, since the DAPM state is only
updated for the specific control that is modified, and not for other
paths that are affected by the register bit(s).
2) False paths through DAPM, since you end up merging unconnected stereo
paths together into a single widget which hosts the single control, and
then branching back out again, thus conjoining the enable states of the
two input paths.
Now that the kcontrol creation logic is split out into a separate
function, dapm_create_or_share_mixmux_kcontrol(), also use that to
replace most of the body of dapm_new_mux(). This should produce no
functional change, but simply eliminates some mostly duplicated code.

Currently if a path loops back on itself we correctly skip over it to
avoid going into an infinite loop but this causes us to ignore the need
to power up the path as we don't count the loop for the purposes of
counting inputs and outputs. This means that internal loopbacks within a
device that have powered devices on them won't be powered up.
Fix this by treating any path that is currently in the process of being
recursed as having a single input or output so that it is counted for
the purposes of power decisions.

Help avoid noise from the power up of the capture path propagating through
into the start of the recording (especially noise caused by the ramp of
microphone biases) by keeping the capture muted until after we've finished
powering things up with DAPM in the same manner we do for playback. This
allows us to take advantage of soft mute support in the hardware more
effectively and is more consistent.
The core code using the existing digital mute operation is updated to take
advantage of this. Some additional cases in the soc-pcm code and suspend
will need separate handling but these are less practically relevant than
the main runtime stream start/stop case.
Rather than refactor the digital mute function in every single driver a
new operation is added for drivers taking advantage of this functionality,
the old operation should be phased out over time.

Currently this is done each time the control is accessed. And while the
performance impact of this should be negligible we can easily do better. The

Commit 412312 (ASoC: dapm: Make sure all dapm contexts are updated) means
that any DAPM context being updated will have the bias level automatically
set, including the card. We can't safely do this as the card callbacks are
called for each device context and so the management of the card bias is
more complex. Several multi-component cards rely on this behaviour.
Skip updates during the asynchronous run entirely. We should really do them
in the synchronous section but it's not 100% clear which values to pick as
the different DAPM contexts may have different bias levels.

Ever since the DAPM performance improvements we've been marking all widgets
as not dirty after each DAPM run. Since _PRE and _POST events aren't part
of the DAPM graph this has rendered them non-functional, they will never be
marked dirty again and thus will never be run again.
Fix this by skipping them when marking widgets as not dirty.

Rather than having the user half start a stream but avoid any DMA to
trigger data flow on links which don't pass through the CPU create a
DAPM route between the two DAI widgets using a hw_params configuration
provided by the machine driver with the new 'params' member of the
dai_link struct. If no configuration is provided in the dai_link then
use the old style even for CODEC<->CODEC links to avoid breaking
systems.
This greatly simplifies the userspace usage of such links, making them
as simple as analogue connections with the stream configuration being
completely transparent to them.
This is achieved by defining a new dai_link widget type which is created
when CODECs are linked and triggering the configuration of the link via
the normal PCM operations from there. It is expected that the bias
level callbacks will be used for clock configuration.
Currently only the DAI format, rate and channel count can be configured
and currently the only DAI operations which can be called are hw_params
and digital_mute(). This corresponds well to the majority of CODEC
drivers which only use other callbacks for constraint setting but there
is obviously much room for extension here. We can't simply call
hw_params() on startup as things like the system clocking configuration
may change at runtime and in future it will be desirable to offer some
configurability of the link parameters.
At present we are also restricted to a single DAPM link for the entire
DAI. Once we have better support for channel mapping it would also be
desirable to extend this feature so that we can propagate per-channel
power state over the link.

In order to allow us to do smarter things with DAI links create DAPM
widgets which directly represent the DAIs in the DAPM graph. These are
automatically created from the DAIs as we probe the card with references
held in both directions between the widget and the DAI.
The widgets are not made available for direct instantiation by drivers,
they are created automatically from the DAIs. Drivers should be updated
to create stream routes using DAPM maps rather than by annotating AIF
and DAC widgets with streams.
In order to ease transition to this model from existing drivers we
automatically create DAPM routes between the DAI widgets and the existing
stream widgets which are started and stopped by the DAI widgets, though
the old stream handling mechanism is still in place. This also has the
nice effect of removing non-DAPM devices as any device with a DAI
acquires a widget automatically which will allow future simplifications
to the core DAPM logic.
The intention is that in future the AIF and DAI widgets will gain the
ability to interact such that we are able to manage activity on
individual channels independantly rather than powering up and down the
entire AIF as we do currently.
Currently we only generate these for CODECs, mostly as I have no systems
with non-CODEC DAPM to integrate with. It should be a simple matter of
programming to add the additional hookup for these.

A card is fully routed if the DAPM route table describes all connections on
the board.
When a card is fully routed, some operations can be automated by the ASoC
core. The first, and currently only, such operation is described below, and
implemented by this patch.
Codecs often have a large number of external pins, and not all of these pins
will be connected on all board designs. Some machine drivers therefore call
snd_soc_dapm_nc_pin() for all the unused pins, in order to tell the ASoC core
never to activate them.
However, when a card is fully routed, the information needed to derive the
set of unused pins is present in card->dapm_routes. In this case, have
the ASoC core automatically call snd_soc_dapm_nc_pin() for each unused
codec pin.
This has been tested with soc/tegra/tegra_wm8903.c and soc/tegra/trimslice.c.

We really should be doing this in the core, not in a driver...

The number of connected input and output endpoints for a given widgets
can't change during a DAPM run so there is no need to redo the recursion
through branches of the tree we've already visited. Doing this on one of
my test systems gives an improvement of:
Power Path Neighbour
Before: 63 607 731
After: 63 141 181
which scales up well as more widgets are involved in paths.

This ensures none of the rest of the code ever encounters a widget which
does not have a power check function.

Ensure we only have one sync during the initial startup of the card by
making snd_soc_dapm_sync() a noop on non-instantiated cards. This avoids
any bounces due to things like jacks reporting their initial state on
partially initialised cards. The callers that don't also get called at
runtime should just be removed.

We don't really care how many widgets a supply is supplying, we just care
if the number is non-zero. This didn't actually produce any improvement
in the test cases I've been using but seems obviously sensible enough that
I'm pushing it out anyway.
We could do a similar thing for other widgets but this may be unhelpful
for further refactorings Liam was working on aiming to allow us to
identify connected audio paths.

The whole point of supply widgets is that they aren't inputs to their
sinks so a state change in a supply should never affect the state of the
widget being supplied and we don't need to mark them as dirty.
Power Path Neighbour
Before: 69 727 905
After: 63 607 731
This is particularly useful where supplies affect large portions of the
chip (eg, a bandgap supplying the analogue sections).

Some widgets will get power_check() run on them more than once during a
DAPM run, most commonly due to supply widgets checking to see if their
consumers are powered up. It's wasteful to do this so cache the result
of power_check() during a run. For one system I tested this on I got an
improvement of:
Power Path Neighbour
Before: 106 970 1186
After: 69 727 905
from this.

Help diagnose why we're checking widgets by providing some logging when
we first dirty them. This should possibly be a trace point if it's useful
but can be absurdly verbose if enabled, we can always change it later if
desired.

If two widgets are not currently connected then there is no need to
propagate a power state change between them as we mark the affected
widgets when we change a connection. Similarly if a neighbour widget is
already in the state being set for the current widget then there is no
need to recheck.
On one system I tested this gave:
Power Path Neighbour
Before: 114 1066 1327
After: 106 970 1186
which is an improvement, although relatively small.

In order to reduce the number of DAPM power checks we run keep a list of
widgets which have been changed since the last DAPM run and iterate over
that rather than the full widget list. Whenever we change the power state
for a widget we add all the source and sink widgets it has to the dirty
list, ensuring that all widgets in the path are checked.
This covers more widgets than we need to as some of the neighbour widgets
won't be connected but it's simpler as a first step. On one system I tried
this gave:
Power Path Neighbour
Before: 207 1939 2461
After: 114 1066 1327
which seems useful.

We're not actually doing any dynamic power management based on connection
and output drivers (which are pretty much the same thing) are marked as
unconditionally connected already.

place instead.

Future patches will try to reduce the number of widgets we check on each
DAPM run but we're still going to need to look and see if the devices is
on at all so we can manage the overall device bias. Move these checks out
into the main dapm_power_widgets() function so we don't have to think about
them for now.
Once we're doing more incremental updates it'll probably be worth using
refcounts for each bias level to avoid having to do the sweep over all
widgets but that's not going to be where the big performance wins are.

Split the decision about what the new power should be out from the
implementation of that decision.
Signed-off-by: Mark Brown <broonie@opensource.wolfsonmicro.com>
Currently we force all devices in the system to be at the same bias level.
This is due to concerns about power or pop/click impacts from either
ramping VMID or mismatching VMID on the analogue I/O lines between
connected devices but does mean we power devices up more often than we
really need to.
If a device flags idle_bias_off this will usually mean that it's either
all digital or ground referenced (in which case the idle and powered bias
levels are identical) so this concern does not apply and we can save some
power by leaving it off when not needed itself.

The number of times we look at a potentially connected neighbour is just
as important as the number of times we actually recurse into looking at
that neighbour so also collect that statistic.
