Bart Van Assche 2fec7b3309 Documentation/CodingStyle: Use directory-local variables for emacs settings
In emacs 23.1 support for directory-local variables was added (see also
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/info-gnu-emacs/2009-07/msg00000.html).
Simplify the settings in coding-style.rst by using that feature.
Additionally, do not inherit any settings from emacs' linux coding style
to minimize dependencies on the version of emacs that is being used.

I have verified with several large and nontrivial kernel source files
that the new settings format code according to what checkpatch expects.

Alexey Dobriyan 3fe5dbfef4 Documentation/process/coding-style.rst: don't use "extern" with function prototypes
`extern' with function prototypes makes lines longer and creates more
characters on the screen.

Do not bug people with checkpatch.pl warnings for now as fallout can be
devastating.

Federico Vaga edba5eecfd doc:it_IT: add some process/* translations
This patch does not translate entirely the subfolder "process/"
but only part of it (to begin with).

In order to avoid broken links, I included empty documents
for those which are not yet translated.

In order to be able to refer to all documents in "process/",
I added a sphinx label to those which had not one.

Translated documents:
- howto
- 1.Intro
- clang-format
- coding-style
- kernel-driver-statement
- magic-number
- volatile-considered-harmful
- development-process

Linus Torvalds e468f5c06b The Compiler Attributes series
This is an effort to disentangle the include/linux/compiler*.h headers
and bring them up to date.

The main idea behind the series is to use feature checking macros
 (i.e. __has_attribute) instead of compiler version checks (e.g. GCC_VERSION),
which are compiler-agnostic (so they can be shared, reducing the size
 of compiler-specific headers) and version-agnostic.

Other related improvements have been performed in the headers as well,
which on top of the use of __has_attribute it has amounted to a significant
simplification of these headers (e.g. GCC_VERSION is now only guarding
 a few non-attribute macros).

This series should also help the efforts to support compiling the kernel
with clang and icc. A fair amount of documentation and comments have also
been added, clarified or removed; and the headers are now more readable,
which should help kernel developers in general.

The series was triggered due to the move to gcc >= 4.6. In turn, this series
has also triggered Sparse to gain the ability to recognize __has_attribute
 on its own.

Finally, the __nonstring variable attribute series has been also applied
on top; plus two related patches from Nick Desaulniers for unreachable()
 that came a bit afterwards.

MM docs from Mike Rapoport, and the usual pile of typo fixes and

Greg Kroah-Hartman 79dbeed36f Code of Conduct Interpretation: Add document explaining how the Code of Conduct is to be interpreted
The Contributor Covenant Code of Conduct is a general document meant to
provide a set of rules for almost any open source community. Every
open-source community is unique and the Linux kernel is no exception.
Because of this, this document describes how we in the Linux kernel
community will interpret it. We also do not expect this interpretation
to be static over time, and will adjust it as needed.

This document was created with the input and feedback of the TAB as well
as many current kernel maintainers.

Chris Mason c1d1ba844f Code of conduct: Fix wording around maintainers enforcing the code of conduct
As it was originally worded, this paragraph requires maintainers to
enforce the code of conduct, or face potential repercussions. It sends
the wrong message, when really we just want maintainers to be part of
the solution and not violate the code of conduct themselves.

Removing it doesn't limit our ability to enforce the code of conduct,
and we can still encourage maintainers to help maintain high standards
for the level of discourse in their subsystem.

Greg Kroah-Hartman 8a104f8b58 Code of Conduct: Let's revamp it.
The Code of Conflict is not achieving its implicit goal of fostering
civility and the spirit of 'be excellent to each other'. Explicit
guidelines have demonstrated success in other projects and other areas
of the kernel.

Here is a Code of Conduct statement for the wider kernel. It is based
on the Contributor Covenant as described at www.contributor-covenant.org

From this point forward, we should abide by these rules in order to help
make the kernel community a welcoming environment to participate in.

Masahiro Yamada fd65465b70 kconfig: do not require pkg-config on make {menu,n}config
Meelis Roos reported a {menu,n}config regression:
"I have libncurses devel package installed in the default system
location (as do 99%+ on actual developers probably) and in this
case, pkg-config is useless. pkg-config is needed only when
libraries and headers are installed in non-default locations but
it is bad to require installation of pkg-config on all the machines
where make menuconfig would be possibly run."

For {menu,n}config, do not use pkg-config if it is not installed.
For {g,x}config, keep checking pkg-config since we really rely on it
for finding the installation paths of the required packages.

Markus Heiser 9799445af1 docs: tidy up TOCs and refs to license-rules.rst
The documentation and TOCs are organized in a manner of a tree. Adding a TOC to
the root, which refers to a file which is located in a subfolder forms a
grid. Those TOCs are a bit confusing and thats why we get additional error
messages while building partial documentation::

  $ make SPHINXDIRS=process htmldocs
  ...
  checking consistency... Documentation/process/license-rules.rst: \
WARNING: document isn't included in any toctree

To fix it, the *root-license-TOC* is replaced by a reference and the
'license-roles.txt' is added to the Documentation/process/index.rst TOC.

BTW: there was an old licences remark in Documentation/process/howto.rst which
is also updated, mentioning SPDX and pointing to the license-rules.rst

Joe Perches cafa0010cd Raise the minimum required gcc version to 4.6
Various architectures fail to build properly with older versions of the
gcc compiler.

An example from Guenter Roeck in thread [1]:
>
> In file included from ./include/linux/mm.h:17:0,
> from ./include/linux/pid_namespace.h:7,
> from ./include/linux/ptrace.h:10,
> from arch/openrisc/kernel/asm-offsets.c:32:
> ./include/linux/mm_types.h:497:16: error: flexible array member in otherwise empty struct
>
> This is just an example with gcc 4.5.1 for or32. I have seen the problem
> with gcc 4.4 (for unicore32) as well.

So update the minimum required version of gcc to 4.6.

settings, but none of these check that pkg-config itself is present.
Add a check for all 4 of these targets and update
Documentation/process/changes.rst to mention 'pkg-config'.

"A set of fixes and updates for x86:

   - Address a swiotlb regression which was caused by the recent DMA
rework and made driver fail because dma_direct_supported() returned
     false

   - Fix a signedness bug in the APIC ID validation which caused invalid
APIC IDs to be detected as valid thereby bloating the CPU possible
     space.

   - Fix inconsisten config dependcy/select magic for the MFD_CS5535
     driver.

   - Fix a corruption of the physical address space bits when encryption
has reduced the address space and late cpuinfo updates overwrite
the reduced bit information with the original value.

   - Dominiks syscall rework which consolidates the architecture
specific syscall functions so all syscalls can be wrapped with the
same macros. This allows to switch x86/64 to struct pt_regs based
syscalls. Extend the clearing of user space controlled registers in

Miguel Ojeda d4ef8d3ff0 clang-format: add configuration file
clang-format is a tool to format C/C++/... code according to a set of
rules and heuristics. Like most tools, it is not perfect nor covers
every single case, but it is good enough to be helpful.

In particular, it is useful for quickly re-formatting blocks of code
automatically, for reviewing full files in order to spot coding style
mistakes, typos and possible improvements. It is also handy for sorting
``#includes``, for aligning variables and macros, for reflowing text and
other similar tasks. It also serves as a teaching tool/guide for
newcomers.

The tool itself has been already included in the repositories of popular
Linux distributions for a long time. The rules in this file are
intended for clang-format >= 4, which is easily available in most
distributions.

This commit adds the configuration file that contains the rules that the
tool uses to know how to format the code according to the kernel coding
style. This gives us several advantages:

  * clang-format works out of the box with reasonable defaults;
avoiding that everyone has to re-do the configuration.

  * Everyone agrees (eventually) on what is the most useful default
configuration for most of the kernel.

  * If it becomes commonplace among kernel developers, clang-format
may feel compelled to support us better. They already recognize
the Linux kernel and its style in their documentation and in one
    of the style sub-options.

Some of clang-format's features relevant for the kernel are:

  * Uses clang's tooling support behind the scenes to parse and rewrite
the code. It is not based on ad-hoc regexps.

  * Supports reasonably well the Linux kernel coding style.

  * Fast enough to be used at the press of a key.

  * There are already integrations (either built-in or third-party)
for many common editors used by kernel developers (e.g. vim,
emacs, Sublime, Atom...) that allow you to format an entire file
or, more usefully, just your selection.

  * Able to parse unified diffs -- you can, for instance, reformat
only the lines changed by a git commit.

  * Able to reflow text comments as well.

  * Widely supported and used by hundreds of developers in highly
complex projects and organizations (e.g. the LLVM project itself,
Chromium, WebKit, Google, Mozilla...). Therefore, it will be
    supported for a long time.

See more information about the tool at:

    https://clang.llvm.org/docs/ClangFormat.html
    https://clang.llvm.org/docs/ClangFormatStyleOptions.html

Dominik Brodowski 5ac9efa3c5 syscalls/core, syscalls/x86: Clean up compat syscall stub naming convention
Tidy the naming convention for compat syscall subs. Hints which describe
the purpose of the stub go in front and receive a double underscore to
denote that they are generated on-the-fly by the COMPAT_SYSCALL_DEFINEx()
macro.

For the generic case, this means:

t kernel_waitid	# common C function (see kernel/exit.c)

__do_compat_sys_waitid	# inlined helper doing the actual work
				# (takes original parameters as declared)

T __se_compat_sys_waitid	# sign-extending C function calling inlined
				# helper (takes parameters of type long,
				# casts them to unsigned long and then to
				# the declared type)

T        compat_sys_waitid      # alias to __se_compat_sys_waitid()
				# (taking parameters as declared), to
				# be included in syscall table

For x86, the naming is as follows:

t kernel_waitid	# common C function (see kernel/exit.c)

__do_compat_sys_waitid	# inlined helper doing the actual work
				# (takes original parameters as declared)

t __se_compat_sys_waitid # sign-extending C function calling inlined
				# helper (takes parameters of type long,
				# casts them to unsigned long and then to
				# the declared type)

T __ia32_compat_sys_waitid	# IA32_EMULATION 32-bit-ptregs -> C stub,
				# calls __se_compat_sys_waitid(); to be
				# included in syscall table

T  __x32_compat_sys_waitid	# x32 64-bit-ptregs -> C stub, calls
				# __se_compat_sys_waitid(); to be included
				# in syscall table

If only one of IA32_EMULATION and x32 is enabled, __se_compat_sys_waitid()
may be inlined into the stub __{ia32,x32}_compat_sys_waitid().

Nicholas Piggin f49821ee32 kbuild: rename built-in.o to built-in.a
Incremental linking is gone, so rename built-in.o to built-in.a, which
is the usual extension for archive files.

This patch does two things, first is a simple search/replace:

git grep -l 'built-in\.o' | xargs sed -i 's/built-in\.o/built-in\.a/g'

The second is to invert nesting of nested text manipulations to avoid
filtering built-in.a out from libs-y2:

-libs-y2 := $(filter-out %.a, $(patsubst %/, %/built-in.a, $(libs-y)))
+libs-y2 := $(patsubst %/, %/built-in.a, $(filter-out %.a, $(libs-y)))

Dominik Brodowski 819671ff84 syscalls: define and explain goal to not call syscalls in the kernel
The syscall entry points to the kernel defined by SYSCALL_DEFINEx()
and COMPAT_SYSCALL_DEFINEx() should only be called from userspace
through kernel entry points, but not from the kernel itself. This
will allow cleanups and optimizations to the entry paths *and* to
the parts of the kernel code which currently need to pretend to be
userspace in order to make use of syscalls.

Mauro Carvalho Chehab 88de995ccf COPYING: create a new file with points to the Kernel license files
With the addition of SPDX patchset, the contents of COPYING file
is now duplicated at two other files under LICENSE:
	LICENSES/preferred/GPL-2.0
	LICENSES/exceptions/Linux-syscall-note

It is easy to check that the contents of the licence written on
those files are identical with COPYING using:

	$ diff -upr COPYING LICENSES/preferred/GPL-2.0
	$ diff -upr COPYING LICENSES/exceptions/Linux-syscall-note|less

Also, a new file was added, with describes how SPDX should work at
the Kernel source files:
	Documentation/process/license-rules.rst

Instead fo having it copying the contents of two files, and not
even mentioning the third one, replace it by a file whose content
points to the other tree files, preserving the Kernel's license.

Adjust license-rules.rst accordingly.

Please notice that this file preserves the Kernel license as
is, without any changes.

Linus Torvalds 562f36ed28 Kconfig updates for v4.16
A pretty big batch of Kconfig updates. I have to mention the lexer
and parser of Kconfig are now built from real .l and .y sources.
So, flex and bison are the requirement for building the kernel.
Both of them (unlike gperf) have been stable for a long time. This
change has been tested several weeks in linux-next, and I did not
receive any problem report about this.

 Summary:

 - Add checks for mistakes, like the choice default is not in
   choice, help is doubled

 - Document data structure and complex code

 - Fix various memory leaks

 - Change Makefile to build lexer and parser instead of using
   pre-generated C files

 - Drop 'boolean' keyword, which is equivalent to 'bool'

 - Use default 'yy' prefix and remove unneeded Make variables

 - Fix gettext() check for xconfig

 - Announce that oldnoconfig will be finally removed

 - Make 'Selected by:' and 'Implied by' readable in help and
   search result

 - Hide silentoldconfig from 'make help' to stop confusing people

 - Fix misc things and cleanups

Konstantin Ryabitsev b72dde3869 Documentation/process: kernel maintainer PGP guide
This guide is an adapted version of the more general "Protecting Code
Integrity" guide written and maintained by The Linux Foundation IT for
use with open-source projects. It provides the oft-lacking guidance on
the following topics:

- how to properly protect one's PGP keys to minimize the risks of them
being stolen and used maliciously to impersonate a kernel developer
- how to configure Git to properly use GnuPG
- when and how to use PGP with Git
- how to verify fellow Linux Kernel developer identities

I believe this document should live with the rest of the documentation
describing proper processes one should follow when participating in
kernel development. Placing it in a wiki on some place like kernel.org
would be insufficient for a number of reasons -- primarily, because only
a relatively small subset of maintainers have accounts on kernel.org,
but also because even those who do rarely remember that such wiki
exists. Keeping it with the rest of in-kernel docs should hopefully give
it more visibility, but also help keep it up-to-date as tools and
processes evolve.

Masahiro Yamada 033dba2ec0 kbuild: prepare to remove C files pre-generated by flex and bison
In Linux build system convention, pre-generated files are version-
controlled with a "_shipped" suffix. During the kernel building,
they are simply shipped (copied) removing the suffix.

This approach can reduce external tool dependency for the kernel build,
but it is tedious to manually regenerate such artifacts from developers'
point of view. (We need to do "make REGENERATE_PARSERS=1" every time
we touch real source files such as *.l, *.y)

Some months ago, I sent out RFC patches to run flex, bison, and gperf
during the build.

In the review and test, Linus noticed gperf-3.1 had changed the lookup
function prototype. Then, the use of gperf in kernel was entirely
removed by commit bb3290d916 ("Remove gperf usage from toolchain").

This time, I tested several versions of flex and bison, and I was not
hit by any compatibility issue except a flaw in flex-2.6.3; if you
generate lexer for dtc and genksyms with flex-2.6.3, you will see
"yywrap redefined" warning. This was not intentional, but a bug,
fixed by flex-2.6.4. Otherwise, both flex and bison look fairly
stable for a long time.

This commit prepares some build rules to remove the _shipped files.
Also, document minimal requirement for flex and bison.

Rationale for the minimal version:
The -Wmissing-prototypes option of GCC warns "no previous prototype"
for lexers generated by flex-2.5.34 or older, so I chose 2.5.35 as the
required version for flex. Flex-2.5.35 was released in 2008. Bison
looks more stable. I did not see any problem with bison-2.0, released
in 2004. I did not test bison-1.x, but bison-2.0 should be old enough.

Tested flex versions:
  2.5.35

Greg Kroah-Hartman 8ee25f6fcf Documentation/process: add Co-Developed-by: tag for patches with multiple authors
Sometimes a single patch is the result of multiple authors. As git only
can have one "author" of a patch, it is still good to properly give
credit to the other developers of a commit. To address this, document
the "Co-Developed-by:" tag which can be used to show other authors of
the patch.

Note, these other authors must also provide a Signed-off-by: tag as it
is their work that is being submitted here.

Greg Kroah-Hartman 13277782dd Documentation: add Kernel Driver Statement to the kernel
Way back in 2008 we didn't have "robust" in-kernel documentation system,
so the idea of putting something like the kernel driver statement in the
kernel tree wasn't even imagined. But now that has changed, so add the
old document to the kernel source itself to allow for us to properly
reference it in one canonical place (as the LF wiki keeps moving things
around.)

This also will allow people to add their names to it, as I seem to have
lost the ability to do that by not knowing how to edit things on the
original document.

Linus Torvalds 98ced886dd Kbuild thin archives updates for v4.13
Thin archives migration by Nicholas Piggin.

THIN_ARCHIVES has been available for a while as an optional feature
only for PowerPC architecture, but we do not need two different
 intermediate-artifact schemes.

Using thin archives instead of conventional incremental linking has
 various advantages:
  - save disk space for builds
  - speed-up building a little
  - fix some link issues (for example, allyesconfig on ARM) due to
more flexibility for the final linking
  - work better with dead code elimination we are planning

As discussed before, this migration has been done unconditionally
so that any problems caused by this will show up with "git bisect".

With testing with 0-day and linux-next, some architectures actually
showed up problems, but they were trivial and all fixed now.

Pull Kbuild thin archives updates from Masahiro Yamada:
"Thin archives migration by Nicholas Piggin.

THIN_ARCHIVES has been available for a while as an optional feature
only for PowerPC architecture, but we do not need two different
  intermediate-artifact schemes.

Using thin archives instead of conventional incremental linking has
  various advantages:

   - save disk space for builds

   - speed-up building a little

   - fix some link issues (for example, allyesconfig on ARM) due to more
     flexibility for the final linking

   - work better with dead code elimination we are planning

As discussed before, this migration has been done unconditionally so

Nicholas Piggin 799c434154 kbuild: thin archives make default for all archs
Make thin archives build the default, but keep the config option
to allow exemptions if any breakage can't be quickly solved.

Stewart Smith e34e20e003 doc: Document suitability of IBM Verse for kernel development
IBM Verse is a web UI around Lotus Domino mail servers (much like
the Lotus Notes client talks to Domino servers).

For various reasons, it is not at all suitable for kernel development,
all of which have been raised (repeatedly) internally.
