Use rw_semaphore instead of mutex to control access to vdpa devices.
This can be especially beneficial in case processes poll on statistics

Allows to read vendor statistics of a vdpa device. The specific
statistics data are received from the upstream driver in the form of an
(attribute name, attribute value) pairs.
An example of statistics for mlx5_vdpa device are:
received_desc - number of descriptors received by the virtqueue
completed_desc - number of descriptors completed by the virtqueue
A descriptor using indirect buffers is still counted as 1. In addition,
N chained descriptors are counted correctly N times as one would expect.
A new callback was added to vdpa_config_ops which provides the means for
the vdpa driver to return statistics results.
The interface allows for reading all the supported virtqueues, including
the control virtqueue if it exists.
Below are some examples taken from mlx5_vdpa which are introduced in the
following patch:
1. Read statistics for the virtqueue at index 1
$ vdpa dev vstats show vdpa-a qidx 1
vdpa-a:
queue_type tx queue_index 1 received_desc 3844836 completed_desc 3844836
2. Read statistics for the virtqueue at index 32
$ vdpa dev vstats show vdpa-a qidx 32
vdpa-a:
queue_type control_vq queue_index 32 received_desc 62 completed_desc 62
3. Read statisitics for the virtqueue at index 0 with json output
$ vdpa -j dev vstats show vdpa-a qidx 0
{"vstats":{"vdpa-a":{
"queue_type":"rx","queue_index":0,"name":"received_desc","value":417776,\
"name":"completed_desc","value":417548}}}
4. Read statistics for the virtqueue at index 0 with preety json output
$ vdpa -jp dev vstats show vdpa-a qidx 0
{
"vstats": {
"vdpa-a": {

"queue_index": 0,

The current code evaluates RQT size based on the configured number of
virtqueues. This can raise an issue in the following scenario:
Assume MQ was negotiated.
1. mlx5_vdpa_set_map() gets called.
2. handle_ctrl_mq() is called setting cur_num_vqs to some value, lower
than the configured max VQs.
3. A second set_map gets called, but now a smaller number of VQs is used
to evaluate the size of the RQT.
4. handle_ctrl_mq() is called with a value larger than what the RQT can
hold. This will emit errors and the driver state is compromised.
To fix this, we use a new field in struct mlx5_vdpa_net to hold the
required number of entries in the RQT. This value is evaluated in
mlx5_vdpa_set_driver_features() where we have the negotiated features
all set up.
In addition to that, we take into consideration the max capability of RQT
entries early when the device is added so we don't need to take consider
it when creating the RQT.
Last, we remove the use of mlx5_vdpa_max_qps() which just returns the
max_vas / 2 and make the code clearer.

Currently, CVQ doesn't have any synchronization with the driver
status. Then CVQ emulation code run in the middle of:
1) device reset
2) device status changed
3) map updating
The will lead several unexpected issue like trying to execute CVQ
command after the driver has been teared down.
Fixing this by using reslock to synchronize CVQ emulation code with
the driver status changing:
- protect the whole device reset, status changing and set_map()
updating with reslock
- protect the CVQ handler with the reslock and check
VIRTIO_CONFIG_S_DRIVER_OK in the CVQ handler
This will guarantee that:
1) CVQ handler won't work if VIRTIO_CONFIG_S_DRIVER_OK is not set
2) CVQ handler will see a consistent state of the driver instead of
the partial one when it is running in the middle of the
teardown_driver() or setup_driver().

On some platforms/devices, there may not be enough MSI vectors
allocated for the virtqueues and config changes. In such a case,
the interrupt sources(virtqueues, config changes) must share
an IRQ/vector, to avoid initialization failures, keep
the device functional.
This commit handles three cases:
(1) number of the allocated vectors == the number of virtqueues + 1
(config changes), every virtqueue and the config interrupt has
a separated vector/IRQ, the best and the most likely case.
(2) number of the allocated vectors is less than the best case, but
greater than 1. In this case, all virtqueues share a vector/IRQ,
the config interrupt has a separated vector/IRQ
(3) only one vector is allocated, in this case, the virtqueues and
the config interrupt share a vector/IRQ. The worst and most
unlikely case.
Otherwise, it needs to fail.
This commit introduces some helper functions:
ifcvf_set_vq_vector() and ifcvf_set_config_vector() sets virtqueue
vector and config vector in the device config space, so that
the device can send interrupt DMA.

Per VIRTIO v1.1 specification, section 5.1.3.1 Feature bit requirements:
"VIRTIO_NET_F_MQ Requires VIRTIO_NET_F_CTRL_VQ".
There's assumption in the mlx5_vdpa multiqueue code that MQ must come
together with CTRL_VQ. However, there's nowhere in the upper layer to
guarantee this assumption would hold. Were there an untrusted driver
sending down MQ without CTRL_VQ, it would compromise various spots for
e.g. is_index_valid() and is_ctrl_vq_idx(). Although this doesn't end
up with immediate panic or security loophole as of today's code, the
chance for this to be taken advantage of due to future code change is
not zero.
Harden the crispy assumption by failing the set_driver_features() call
when seeing (MQ && !CTRL_VQ). For that end, verify_min_features() is
renamed to verify_driver_features() to reflect the fact that it now does
more than just validate the minimum features. verify_driver_features()
is now used to accommodate various checks against the driver features
for set_driver_features().

Currently the rcache structures are allocated for all IOVA domains, even if
they do not use "fast" alloc+free interface. This is wasteful of memory.
In addition, fails in init_iova_rcaches() are not handled safely, which is
less than ideal.
Make "fast" users call a separate rcache init explicitly, which includes
error checking.

Make sure the decision whether an index received through a callback is
valid or not consults the negotiated features.
The motivation for this was due to a case encountered where I shut down
the VM. After the reset operation was called features were already
clear, I got get_vq_state() call which caused out array bounds
access since is_index_valid() reported the index value.
So this is more of not hit a bug since the call shouldn't have been made

RQTs require to have a power of two entries. When creating or modifying

Lots of little things here, including:
- kobj_type cleanups
- auxiliary_bus documentation updates
- auxiliary_device conversions for some drivers (relevant subsystems
all have provided acks for these)
- kernfs lock contention reduction for some workloads
- other tiny cleanups and changes.

This condition checks "len" but it does not check "offset" and that
could result in an out of bounds read if "offset > dev->config_size".
The problem is that since both variables are unsigned the
"dev->config_size - offset" subtraction would result in a very high
unsigned value.
I think these checks might not be necessary because "len" and "offset"
are supposed to already have been validated using the
vhost_vdpa_config_validate() function. But I do not know the code
perfectly, and I like to be safe.

The "config.offset" comes from the user. There needs to a check to
prevent it being out of bounds. The "config.offset" and
"dev->config_size" variables are both type u32. So if the offset if
out of bounds then the "dev->config_size - config.offset" subtraction
results in a very high u32 value. The out of bounds offset can result
in memory corruption.

Cited patch in the fixes tag clears the features bit during reset.
mlx5 vdpa device feature bits are static decided by device capabilities.
These feature bits (including VIRTIO_NET_F_MAC) are initialized during
device addition time.
Clearing features bit in reset callback cleared the VIRTIO_NET_F_MAC. Due
to this, MAC address provided by the device is not honored.
Fix it by not clearing the static feature bits during reset.

This VDUSE driver enables implementing software-emulated vDPA
devices in userspace. The vDPA device is created by
ioctl(VDUSE_CREATE_DEV) on /dev/vduse/control. Then a char device
interface (/dev/vduse/$NAME) is exported to userspace for device
emulation.
In order to make the device emulation more secure, the device's
control path is handled in kernel. A message mechnism is introduced
to forward some dataplane related control messages to userspace.
And in the data path, the DMA buffer will be mapped into userspace
address space through different ways depending on the vDPA bus to
which the vDPA device is attached. In virtio-vdpa case, the MMU-based
software IOTLB is used to achieve that. And in vhost-vdpa case, the
DMA buffer is reside in a userspace memory region which can be shared
to the VDUSE userspace processs via transferring the shmfd.
For more details on VDUSE design and usage, please see the follow-on
Documentation commit.

This implements an MMU-based software IOTLB to support mapping
kernel dma buffer into userspace dynamically. The basic idea
behind it is treating MMU (VA->PA) as IOMMU (IOVA->PA). The
software IOTLB will set up MMU mapping instead of IOMMU mapping
for the DMA transfer so that the userspace process is able to
use its virtual address to access the dma buffer in kernel.
To avoid security issue, a bounce-buffering mechanism is
introduced to prevent userspace accessing the original buffer
directly which may contain other kernel data. During the mapping,
unmapping, the software IOTLB will copy the data from the original
buffer to the bounce buffer and back, depending on the direction
of the transfer. And the bounce-buffer addresses will be mapped
into the user address space instead of the original one.

This patch introduces an attribute for vDPA device to indicate
whether virtual address can be used. If vDPA device driver set
it, vhost-vdpa bus driver will not pin user page and transfer
userspace virtual address instead of physical address during
DMA mapping. And corresponding vma->vm_file and offset will be
also passed as an opaque pointer.

Now we use byte granularity for the iova domain, so it's safe to

Multiqueue support requires additional virtio_net_q objects to be added
or removed per the configured number of queue pairs. In addition the RQ
tables needs to be modified to match the number of configured receive
queues so the packets are dispatched to the right virtqueue according to
the hash result.
Note: qemu v6.0.0 is broken when the device requests more than two data
queues; no net device will be created for the vdpa device. To avoid
this, one should specify mq=off to qemu. In this case it will end up
with a single queue.

Add support to handle control virtqueue configurations per virtio
specification. The control virtqueue is implemented in software and no
hardware offloading is involved.
Control VQ configuration need task context, therefore all configurations
are handled in a workqueue created for the purpose.
Modifications are made to the memory registration code to allow for
saving a copy of itolb to be used by the control VQ to access the vring.
The max number of data virtqueus supported by the driver has been
updated to 2 since multiqueue is not supported at this stage and we need
to ensure consistency of VQ indices mapping to either data or control
VQ.

These do change a number of different things across different
subsystems, and because of that, there were 2 stable tags created that
might have already come into your tree from different pulls that did the
following
- changed the bus remove callback to return void
- sysfs iomem_get_mapping rework
The latter one will cause a tiny merge issue with your tree, as there
was a last-minute fix for this in 5.14 in your tree, but the fixup
should be "obvious". If you want me to provide a fixed merge for this,
please let me know.
Other than those two things, there's only a few small things in here:
- kernfs performance improvements for huge numbers of sysfs
users at once
- tiny api cleanups
- other minor changes
All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported

The current code treats an empty iotlb provdied in set_map() as a
special case and destroy the memory region object. This must not be done
since the virtqueue objects reference this MR. Doing so will cause the
driver unload to emit errors and log timeouts caused by the firmware
complaining on busy resources.
This patch treats an empty iotlb as any other change of mapping. In this
case, mlx5_vdpa_create_mr() will fail and the entire set_map() call to
fail.
This issue has not been encountered before but was seen to occur in a
non-official version of qemu. Since qemu is a userspace program, the
driver must protect against such case.

The driver core ignores the return value of this callback because there
is only little it can do when a device disappears.
This is the final bit of a long lasting cleanup quest where several
buses were converted to also return void from their remove callback.
Additionally some resource leaks were fixed that were caused by drivers
returning an error code in the expectation that the driver won't go
away.
With struct bus_type::remove returning void it's prevented that newly
implemented buses return an ignored error code and so don't anticipate
wrong expectations for driver authors.

We create the 1:1 MR in mlx5_vdpa_dev_add() only in case firmware
supports the general capability umem_uid_0. The reason for that is that
1:1 MRs must be created with uid == 0 while virtqueue objects can be
created with uid == 0 only when the firmware capability is on.
If the set_map() callback is called with new translations provided
through iotlb, the driver will destroy the 1:1 MR and create a regular
one.

Before SF support was introduced, the DMA device was equal to
mdev->device which was in essence equal to pdev->dev.
With SF introduction this is no longer true. It has already been
handled for vhost_vdpa since the reference to the dma device can from
within mlx5_vdpa. With virtio_vdpa this broke. To fix this we set the
real dma device when initializing the device.
In addition, for the sake of consistency, previous references in the
code to the dma device are changed to vdev->dma_dev.

net/mlx5: Expose MPFS configuration API
MPFS is the multi physical function switch that bridges traffic between
the physical port and any physical functions associated with it. The
driver is required to add or remove MAC entries to properly forward
incoming traffic to the correct physical function.
We export the API to control MPFS so that other drivers, such as
mlx5_vdpa are able to add MAC addresses of their network interfaces.
The MAC address of the vdpa interface must be configured into the MPFS L2
address. Failing to do so could cause, in some NIC configurations, failure
to forward packets to the vdpa network device instance.
Fix this by adding calls to update the MPFS table.

To add one or more VDPA devices, define a management device which
allows adding or removing vdpa device. A management device defines
set of callbacks to manage vdpa devices.
To begin with, it defines add and remove callbacks through which a user
defined vdpa device can be added or removed.
A unique management device is identified by its unique handle identified
by management device name and optionally the bus name.
Hence, introduce routine through which driver can register a
management device and its callback operations for adding and remove
a vdpa device.
Introduce vdpa netlink socket family so that user can query management

map_direct_mr() assumed that the number of scatter/gather entries
returned by dma_map_sg_attrs() was equal to the number of segments in
the sgl list. This led to wrong population of the mkey object. Fix this
by properly referring to the returned value.
The hardware expects each MTT entry to contain the DMA address of a
contiguous block of memory of size (1 << mr->log_size) bytes.
dma_map_sg_attrs() can coalesce several sg entries into a single
scatter/gather entry of contiguous DMA range so we need to scan the list
and refer to the size of each s/g entry.
In addition, get rid of fill_sg() which effect is overwritten by
populate_mtts().

vdpasim: fix "mac_pton" undefined error
swiotlb: using SIZE_MAX needs limits.h included
ERROR: modpost: "mac_pton" [drivers/vdpa/vdpa_sim/vdpa_sim.ko] undefined!
mac_pton() is defined in lib/net_utils.c and is not built if NET is not set.
Select GENERIC_NET_UTILS as vdpasim doesn't depend on NET.

Fixes all over the place. A new UAPI is borderline: can also be
considered a new feature but also seems to be the only way we could come
up with to fix addressing for userspace - and it seems important to
switch to it now before userspace making assumptions about addressing
ability of devices is set in stone.
