Add fb ops to handle enter/exit of the kernel debugger. If present, the
fb core will register them with KGDB and they'll be called when the
debugger is entered and exited. The new functions are responsible for
switching to an appropriate debug framebuffer and restoring the
interrupted state at exit time.

percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.
percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.
http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py
The script does the followings.
* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.
* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
doesn't seem to be any matching order.
* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
file.
The conversion was done in the following steps.
1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
files.
2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
inclusions to around 150 files.
3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.
4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.
5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
necessary.
6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.
7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).
* x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
* powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
* sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
* ia64 SMP allmodconfig
* s390 SMP allmodconfig
* alpha SMP allmodconfig
* um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig
8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
a separate patch and serve as bisection point.
Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

Many new laptops now come with 2 gpus, one to be used for low power
modes and one for gaming/on-ac applications. These GPUs are typically
wired to the laptop panel and VGA ports via a multiplexer unit which
is controlled via ACPI methods.
4 combinations of systems typically exist - with 2 ACPI methods.
Intel/ATI - Lenovo W500/T500 - use ATPX ACPI method
ATI/ATI - some ASUS - use ATPX ACPI Method
Intel/Nvidia - - use _DSM ACPI method
Nvidia/Nvidia - - use _DSM ACPI method.
TODO:
This patch adds support for the ATPX method and initial bits
for the _DSM methods that need to written by someone with
access to the hardware.
Add a proper non-debugfs interface - need to get some proper
testing first.
v2: add power up/down support for both devices
on W500 puts i915/radeon into D3 and cuts power to radeon.
v3: redo probing methods, no DMI list, drm devices call to
register with switcheroo, it tries to find an ATPX method on
any device and once there is two devices + ATPX it inits the
switcher.
v4: ATPX msg handling using buffers - should work on more machines
v5: rearchitect after more mjg59 discussion - move ATPX handling to
radeon driver.
v6: add file headers + initial nouveau bits (to be filled out).
v7: merge delayed switcher code.
v8: avoid suspend/resume of gpu that is off
v9: rearchitect - mjg59 is always right. - move all ATPX code to
radeon, should allow simpler DSM also proper ATRM handling
v10: add ATRM support for radeon BIOS, add mutex to lock vgasr_priv
v11: fix bug in resuming Intel for 2nd time.
v12: start fixing up nvidia code blindly.
v13: blindly guess at finishing nvidia code
v14: remove radeon audio hacks - fix up intel resume more like upstream
v15: clean up printks + remove unnecessary igd/dis pointers
mount debugfs
/sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch - should exist if ATPX detected
+ 2 cards.
DIS - immediate change to discrete
IGD - immediate change to IGD

Remove fb_save_state() and fb_restore_state operations from frame buffer layer.
They are used only in two drivers:
1. savagefb - and cause bug #11248
2. uvesafb
Usage of these operations is misunderstood in both drivers so kill these
operations, fix the bug #11248 and avoid confusion in the future.
Tested on Savage 3D/MV card and the patch fixes the bug #11248.
The frame buffer layer uses these funtions during switch between graphics
and text mode of the console, but these drivers saves state before
switching of the frame buffer (in the fb_open) and after releasing it (in
the fb_release). This defeats the purpose of these operations.

fbcon makes the (reasonable) assumption that it only needs to program the
hardware once, when fbcon_init() is called for the foreground console.
This doesn't always play well with vgacon because vgacon_deinit() is only
doing its job when the last console it owns is closed (when switching from
vgacon to fbcon, that's usually *after* fbcon_init() has set the new
mode).
Depending on the hardware this can cause the wrong framebuffer location to
be scanned out (e.g. reproduced on nv05 with the nouveau framebuffer
driver).

Attempting to unload a framebuffer module calls unregister_framebuffer()
which in turn gets fbcon to release it. If fbcon has no framebuffers
linked to a console, it will also unbind itself from the console driver.
However, if fbcon never registered itself as a console driver, the unbind
will fail causing the framebuffer device entry to persist. In most cases
this failure will result in an oops when attempting to access the now
non-existent device.
This patch ensures that the fbcon unbind request will succeed even if a
bind was never done. It tracks if a successful bind ever occurred & will
only attempt to unbind if needed. If there never was a bind, it simply
returns with no error.

At the moment about half of the framebuffer drivers can return an error
code in fb_set_par. Until now it would be silently ignored by fbmem.c
and fbcon.c. This patch fixes fbmem.c to return the error code and
restore var on error.
But it is not clear in which video mode the device is when fb_set_par
fails. It would be good and reasonable if it were in the old state but
there is no guarantee that this is true for all existing drivers.
Additionally print a message if a failing fb_set_par is detected in
fbmem.c or fbcon.c.
Although most errors should be caught by the previous fb_check_var some
errors can't as they are dynamic (memory allocations, ...) and can only be
detected while performing the operations which is forbidden in
fb_check_var.
This patch shouldn't have a negative impact on normal operation as all
drivers return 0 on success. The impact in case of error depends heavily
on the driver and caller but it's expected to be better than before.

Many years ago when this driver was written, it had a use, but these
days it's nothing but trouble and distributions should not enable it
in any situation.
Pretty much every console device a sparc machine could see has a
bonafide real driver, making the PROM console hack unnecessary.
If any new device shows up, we should write a driver instead of
depending upon this crutch to save us. We've been able to take care
of this even when no chip documentation exists (sunxvr500, sunxvr2500)
so there are no excuses.

Catalin and kmemleak spotted a leak of a VC screen buffer in
vc_allocate() due to the following chain of events:
vc_allocate()
visual_init(init=1)
vc->vc_sw->con_init(init=1)
fbcon_init()
vc_resize()
vc->screen_buf = kmalloc()
vc->screen_buf = kmalloc()
The common way for the VC drivers is to set the screen dimension
parameters manually in the init case and only call vc_resize() for
!init - which allocates a screen buffer according to the new
dimensions.
fbcon instead would do vc_resize() unconditionally and afterwards set
the dimensions manually (again) for !init - i.e. completely upside
down. The vc_resize() allocated buffer would then get lost by
vc_allocate() allocating a fresh one.
Use vc_resize() only for actual resizing to close the leak.
Set the dimensions manually only in initialization mode to remove the
redundant setting in resize mode.

Uwe Geuder noted that he gets random bitmaps on a text console if he tried
to type extended characters (like the e acute). For him everything above
unicode 0xa0 was corrupted.
After some digging there seems to be a little culprit in vgacon since the
beginning of ages (well git). The function vgacon_font_get will store the
number of characters correctly in font->charcount but then calls to
vgacon_do_font_op(..., 0, 0). Which means only the lower 256 characters
are actually stored to the fontdata. The rest is left untouched. So the
next time that saved data is used, the garbled font appears. This happens
on every switch between text consoles.

Add mode setting support to the DRM layer.
This is a fairly big chunk of work that allows DRM drivers to provide
full output control and configuration capabilities to userspace. It was
motivated by several factors:
- the fb layer's APIs aren't suited for anything but simple
configurations
- coordination between the fb layer, DRM layer, and various userspace
drivers is poor to non-existent (radeonfb excepted)
- user level mode setting drivers makes displaying panic & oops
messages more difficult
- suspend/resume of graphics state is possible in many more
configurations with kernel level support
This commit just adds the core DRM part of the mode setting APIs.
Driver specific commits using these new structure and APIs will follow.

Add a call to cancel_work_sync() in fbcon_exit() to cancel any pending
work in the fbcon workqueue.
The current implementation of fbcon_exit() sets the fbcon workqueue
function info->queue.func to NULL, but does not assure that there is no
work pending when it does so. On occasion, depending on system timing,
there will still be pending work in the queue when fbcon_exit() is
called. This results in a null pointer deference when run_workqueue()
tries to call the queue's work function.

The commit aef7db4bd5 fixed the problem with
recursive locking in fb blanking code if blank is caused by user setting
the /sys/class/graphics/fb*/blank. However this broke the fbcon timeout
blanking.
If you use a driver that defines ->fb_blank operation and at the same time
that driver relies on other driver (e.g. backlight or lcd class) to blank
the screen, when the fbcon times out and tries to blank the fb, it will
call only fb driver blanker and won't notify the other driver. Thus FB
output is disabled, but the screen isn't blanked.
Restore fbcon blanking and at the same time apply the proper fix for the
above problem: if fbcon_blank is called with FBINFO_FLAG_USEREVENT, we are
already called through notification from fb_blank, thus we don't have to
blank the fb again.

Commit 22af89aa0c ("fbcon: replace mono_col

monochrome color values. This generates 0xffff000f instead of 0x0000000f
for a 4 bit monochrome color, leading to image corruption if it is passed
to cfb_imageblit or other similar functions. Fix it up.

On HPPA there exists some older GSC graphics cards, which need special
graphic-card-BIOS patching to become supported. Since we don't have yet
implemented the patching, it's better to detect such cards in advance,
inform to the user that there are known problems and to not activate the
card.
Problematic GSC cards and BIOS versions are:
* Hyperdrive/Hyperbowl (A4071A) graphics card series:
* ID = 0x2BCB015A (Version 8.04/8)
* ID = 0x2BCB015A (Version 8.04/11)
* Thunder 1 VISUALIZE 48 card:
* ID = 0x2F23E5FC (Version 8.05/9)
* Thunder 2 VISUALIZE 48 XP card:
* ID = 0x2F8D570E (Version 8.05/12)
* Some Hyperion and ThunderHawk GSC cards

mdacon incorrectly detects MDA hardware on systems without such graphics card.
One may load this module by chance, for example when doing some systematical
module-testing, and if there is no Monochrome Display Adapter attached ,
module init renders vc1-16 completely unusable.
I and others have run into this more than once. see [Bug 224522 - modprobe
mdacon freezes machine -> https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=224522 ]
for example
Apparently proper MDA detection seems to be broken for a long time - seems to
be related to those #ifdef TEST_MDA_B statements added by Edward Betts.
this commit back in 2002 made things even worse :
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/tglx/history.git;a=commit;h=c72757b49c88914433244757fb4967fc63546685
It changed default vc allocation from 13-16 to 1-16 for no apparent reason
(!?) , and with that (and without X), mdacon grabs the vc you`re currently
sitting on and locks you out.
this is from Kconfig :
>config MDA_CONSOLE
> depends on !M68K && !PARISC && ISA
> tristate "MDA text console (dual-headed) (EXPERIMENTAL)"
> ---help---
> Say Y here if you have an old MDA or monochrome Hercules graphics
> adapter in your system acting as a second head ( = video card). You
> will then be able to use two monitors with your Linux system. Do not
> say Y here if your MDA card is the primary card in your system; the
> normal VGA driver will handle it.
As we can see mdacon is just meant as an additional driver for dual-head
setup, and since kernel 2.4.36 still defaults to vc13-16 , setting the default
back to that value again shouldn`t do any harm.
Hereby i'm reverting that change, setting default back to to vc13-16 again.
Besides the fact that mdacon may be rarely or never be used these days and
could perhaps put to trash anyway (pre-dinosaur hardware!), indeed this is not
a real solution, but at least it removes the unfortunate side-effect of
messing up the vc you`re working on.

Another addendum to commit c9e587abfd
("vt: fix background color on line feed").
fbcon still was not doing the right thing (read: continued to do old
behavior). fbcon_clear() seems to clear the new line (e.g. where your new
prompt appears after doing echo -en "\e[42mfoo\n"), while scr_memsetw clears
the previous one only (where "foo" appears). So just temporarily set the
video_erase_char to the scrl_erase_char so that fbcon_clear does the right
thing.

A command that causes a line feed while a background color is active,
such as
perl -e 'print "x" x 60, "\e[44m", "x" x 40, "\e[0m\n"'
and
perl -e 'print "x" x 40, "\e[44m\n", "x" x 40, "\e[0m\n"'
causes the line that was started as a result of the line feed to be completely
filled with the currently active background color instead of the default
color.
When scrolling, part of the current screen is memcpy'd/memmove'd to the new
region, and the new line(s) that will appear as a result are cleared using
memset. However, the lines are cleared with vc->vc_video_erase_char, causing
them to be colored with the currently active background color. This is
different from X11 terminal emulators which always paint the new lines with
the default background color (e.g. `xterm -bg black`).
The clear operation (\e[1J and \e[2J) also use vc_video_erase_char, so a new
vc->vc_scrl_erase_char is introduced with contains the erase character used
for scrolling, which is built from vc->vc_def_color instead of vc->vc_color.

The current attr_fgcol_ec / attr_bgcol_ec macros do a simple shift of bits
to get the color from vc_video_erase_char. For a monochrome display
however the attribute does not contain any color, only attribute bits.
Furthermore the reverse bit is lost because it is shifted out, the
resulting color is always 0.
This can bee seen on a monochrome console either directly or by setting it
to inverse mode via "setterm -inversescreen on" . Text is written with
correct color, fb_fillrects from a bit_clear / bit_clear_margins will get
wrong colors.

As reported in Bugzilla Bug 9093, upon switching to X, a small rectangular
cursor can still be seen blinking in the upper left part of the screen. It is
fbcon's text cursor. This is caused by a strange ioctl(..., KDSETMODE,
KD_TEXT) call done by something in userspace, perhaps by X itself, while the
tty is still in graphics mode. And when the tty is in KD_TEXT mode, the
cursor timer is restarted.
Although this is a userspace problem, we can work around it by delaying the
restart of the cursor timer until an fbcon_switch() is called. In other
words, the cursor timer will not be restarted even if a KD_TEXT mode switch is
requested.

Various console drivers are able to resize the screen via the con_resize()
hook. This hook is also visible in userspace via the TIOCWINSZ, VT_RESIZE and
VT_RESIZEX ioctl's. One particular utility, SVGATextMode, expects that
con_resize() of the VGA console will always return success even if the
resulting screen is not compatible with the hardware. However, this
particular behavior of the VGA console, as reported in Kernel Bugzilla Bug
7513, can cause undefined behavior if the user starts with a console size
larger than 80x25.
To work around this problem, add an extra parameter to con_resize(). This
parameter is ignored by drivers except for vgacon. If this parameter is
non-zero, then the resize request came from a VT_RESIZE or VT_RESIZEX ioctl
and vgacon will always return success. If this parameter is zero, vgacon will
return -EINVAL if the requested size is not compatible with the hardware. The
latter is the more correct behavior.
With this change, SVGATextMode should still work correctly while in-kernel and
stty resize calls can expect correct behavior from vgacon.

This allows for proper console unregistration via the VT layer, and updates
the FB layer to use it. This makes debugging new console drivers much easier,
since you can properly clean them up before unloading.
[adaplas]
unregister_framebuffer() is typically called as part of the driver's
module_exit(). Doing so otherwise will freeze the machine as the VT layer is
holding reference counts on fbcon, and fbcon on the driver. With this change,
it allows unregister_framebuffer() to be called safely anywhere as needed.
Additions from the original: If multiple drivers are used by fbcon, and if
one of them unregisters, a driver will take over the consoles vacated by the
outgoing one (via set_con2fb_map). Once only the outgoing driver remains,
then fbcon will unbind from the VT layer (if CONFIG_HW_CONSOLE_UNBINDING is
set to y).
It is important that these drivers implement fb_open() and fb_release()
just to ensure that no other process is using the driver. Likewise, these
drivers _must_ check the return value of unregister_framebuffer().

set_con2fb_map() has regressed for some time. Using fbcon=map:01, for
example, works only if there is only 1 working framebuffer. Trying to do a
set_con2fb_map() on a non-allocated vc will freeze the system.

Allow fbcon to select the primary display adapter using the
fb_is_primary_device() arch-specific helper. If a a primary adapter is
detected, fbcon will unbind the old adapter from the VT layer, then rebind
using the new adapter. This requires that bind_/unbind_con_driver() be made
public.
Because this feature may produce unexpected behavior (from the user's POV),
this must be explicitly enabled in Kconfig.

type into an xterm:
while true; do echo "" > /dev/console; usleep 100000; done
while the above loop is running switch to the text console and back
again (Ctrl-Alt-F1 then Ctrl-Alt-F7)
... and the screen will be shifting (and wrapping) to the left.
This problem stems from continuously writing text to the system console (which
is in KD_TEXT mode) while the foreground console is in KD_GRAPHICS
mode. Somewhere along the way, console printing got confused and omitted the
KD_GRAPHICS/KD_TEXT test. Thus, vgacon attempted to scroll the screen of X,
which causes X to shift.
Fix by disallowing vgacon to touch the hardware when the vc is in KD_GRAPHICS
mode. A definitive fix entails a full audit of the console code.

Check if the mode can properly display the screen. This will be needed by
drivers where the capability is not constant with each mode. The function
fb_set_var() will query fbcon the requirement, then it will query the driver
(via a new hook fb_get_caps()) its capability. If the driver's capability
cannot handle fbcon's requirement, then fb_set_var() will fail.
For example, if a particular driver supports 2 modes where:
mode1 = can only display 8x16 bitmaps
mode2 = can display any bitmap
then if current mode = mode2 and current font = 12x22

It was always intended for the logo to be drawn only if both fbcon and the
driver that is mapped to it are both compiled statically. Currently, if fbcon
is loaded prior to the driver, the logo is not shown. Reverse the order, and
the code may attempt to draw the logo which is __initdata. By accident, this
bug is rarely seen because this method of loading the modules is not common
and secondly, a code in fb_prepare_logo() that checks the height of the logo
(now a random value) rarely succeeds.
Fix by drawing the logo only if both fbcon and the driver are statically
compiled.

After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h
recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes.
There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need
anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for
macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the
course of cleaning it up.
To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only
removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble.
Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha,

configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were
introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted
by unnecessarily included header files).

Fix some possible unaligned accesses when accessing fields of 'image'
pointer. Indeed this pointer was obtained by allocating a block of memory
that embeds a temporary array plus an image structure. The temporary
buffer was located at the start of the allocated block and depending on its
size, the image structure which comes right after can be unaligned.
For example when using mini fonts (4x6) (cursor's width is 4 and its height
is 6) the temporary buf size is 6 bytes.
Therefore this patch moves the image structure to the start of the block
and moves the temporary buffer right after. It makes 'image' pointer
always aligned and since the tempo buf is a buffer of char, it's always
correctly aligned as well.
It also fixes the file header alignement.

Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.
The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).
Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.
Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.
I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.
This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:
struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);
And put the old one back at the end:
set_irq_regs(old_regs);
Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().
In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:
- update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
- profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
+ update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
+ profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);
I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().
Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:
(*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
the input_dev struct.
(*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
pointer or not.
(*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
irq_handler_t.

The control for binding/unbinding is moved from fbcon to the console layer.
Thus the fbcon sysfs attributes, attach and detach, are also gone.
1. Add a notifier event that tells fbcon if a framebuffer driver has been
unregistered. If no registered driver remains, fbcon will unregister
itself from the console layer.
2. Replaced calls to give_up_console() with unregister_con_driver().
3. Still use take_over_console() instead of register_con_driver() to
maintain compatibility
4. Respect the parameter first_fb_vc and last_fb_vc instead of using 0 and
MAX_NR_CONSOLES - 1. These parameters are settable by the user.
5. When fbcon is completely unbound from the console layer, fbcon will
also release (iow, decrement module reference counts to zero) all fbdev
drivers. In other words, a bind or unbind request from the console layer
will propagate down to the framebuffer drivers.
6. If fbcon is not bound to the console, it will ignore all notifier
events (except driver registration and unregistration) and all sysfs

Add the ability to detach and attach the framebuffer console to and from the
vt layer. This is done by echo'ing any value to sysfs attributes located in
class/graphics/fbcon. The two attributes are:
attach - bind fbcon to the vt layer
detach - unbind fbcon from the vt layer
Once fbcon is detached from the vt layer, fbcon can be unloaded if compiled as
a module. This feature is quite useful for developers who work on the
framebuffer or console subsystem. This is also useful for users who want to
go to text mode or graphics mode without having to reboot.
Directly unloading the fbcon module is not possible because the vt layer
increments the module reference count for all bound consoles. Detaching fbcon
decrements the module reference count to zero so unloading becomes possible.
Detaching fbcon may interfere with X and/or DRM.

In order for this feature to work, an interface will be needed. The most
appropriate is sysfs. However, the framebuffer console has no sysfs entry
yet. This will create a sysfs class device entry for fbcon under
/sys/class/graphics.
Add a class_device entry 'fbcon' under class 'graphics'. Console-specific
attributes which where previously under class/graphics/fb[x] are moved to
class/graphics/fbcon. These attributes, 'con_rotate' and 'con_rotate_all',
are also renamed to 'rotate' and 'rotate_all' respectively.

One of the limitations of the framebuffer console system is its inablity to
unload or detach itself from the console layer. And once it loads, it also
locks in framebuffer drivers preventing their unload. Although the con2fbmap
utility does provide a means to unload individual drivers, it requires that at
least one framebuffer driver is loaded for use by fbcon.
With this change, it is possible to detach fbcon from the console layer. If it
is detached, it will reattach the boot console driver (which is permanently
loaded) back to the console layer so the system can continue to work. As a
consequence, fbcon will also decrement its reference count of individual
framebuffer drivers, allowing all of these drivers to be unloaded even if
fbcon is still loaded.
Unless you use drivers that restores the display to text mode (rivafb and
i810fb, for example), detaching fbcon does require assistance from userspace
tools (ie, vbetools) for text mode to be restored completely. Without the
help of these tools, fbcon will leave the VGA console corrupted. The methods
that can be used will be described in Documentation/fb/fbcon.txt.
Because the vt layer also increments the module reference count for each
console driver, fbcon cannot be directly unloaded. It must be detached first
prior to unload.
Similarly, fbcon can be reattached to the console layer without having to
reload the module. A nice feature if fbcon is compiled statically.
Attaching and detaching fbcon is done via sysfs attributes. A class device
entry for fbcon is created in /sys/class/graphics. The two attributes that
controls this feature are detach and attach. Two other attributes that are
piggybacked under /sys/class/graphics/fb[n] that are fbcon-specific,
'con_rotate' and 'con_rotate_all' are moved to fbcon. They are renamed as
'rotate' and 'rotate_all' respectively.
Overall, this feature is a great help for developers working in the
framebuffer or console layer. There is not need to continually reboot the
kernel for every small change. It is also useful for regular users who wants
to choose between a graphical console or a text console without having to
reboot.
Example usage for x86:
/* start in text mode */
modprobe xxxfb
modprobe fbcon
/* graphical mode with fbcon using xxxfb */
echo 1 > /sys/class/graphics/fbcon/detach
/* back to text mode, will produce corrupt display unless vbetool is used */
rmmod xxxfb
modprobe yyyfb
/* back to graphical mode with fbcon using yyyfb */
Before trying out this feature, please read Documentation/fb/fbcon.txt.
This patch:
In order for fbcon to detach itself from the console layer, vgacon, which is a
boot console driver, must be fixed so it can retake the console multiple
times, not just during init. The following needs to be done:
- remove __init from the vgacon_startup, this is called again by
take_over_console().
- vc->rows and vc->cols are set manually by vgacon during init. After init,
vc_resize() can be used
- make sure the scrollback_buffer is not reallocated

VGA_MAP_MEM translates to ioremap() on some architectures. It makes sense
to do this to vga_vram_base, because we're going to access memory between
vga_vram_base and vga_vram_end.
But it doesn't really make sense to map starting at vga_vram_end, because
we aren't going to access memory starting there. On ia64, which always has
to be different, ioremapping vga_vram_end gives you something completely
incompatible with ioremapped vga_vram_start, so vga_vram_size ends up being
nonsense.
As a bonus, we often know the size up front, so we can use ioremap()
correctly, rather than giving it a zero size.

The boot cmdline is parsed in parse_early_param() and
parse_args(,unknown_bootoption).
And __setup() is used in obsolete_checksetup().
start_kernel()
-> parse_args()
-> unknown_bootoption()
-> obsolete_checksetup()
If __setup()'s callback (->setup_func()) returns 1 in
obsolete_checksetup(), obsolete_checksetup() thinks a parameter was
handled.
If ->setup_func() returns 0, obsolete_checksetup() tries other
->setup_func(). If all ->setup_func() that matched a parameter returns 0,
a parameter is seted to argv_init[].
Then, when runing /sbin/init or init=app, argv_init[] is passed to the app.
If the app doesn't ignore those arguments, it will warning and exit.

EGA boards suck: they mostly have write-only registers. This is
particularly problematic for the overflow register: for being able to write
to it, we would have to handle vertical sync & such too, which (I'd say)
would potentially break a lot of configurations. Instead, just disabling
vertical resize for EGA boards is just nice enough (horizontal resize still
works).

Nothing prevents a user to modprobe a framebuffer driver from e.g. the

called from fbcon_init().
This is fatal as a lot of X / framebuffer combinations are unable to
recover from set_par() reprogramming the graphics controller in

It is also unnecessary as the set_par() function will be called during a

Every framebuffer driver relies on the assumption that the set_par()
function of the driver is called before drawing functions and other
functions dependent on the hardware state are executed.
Whenever you switch from X to a framebuffer console for the very first
time, there is a chance that a broken X system has _not_ set the mode to
KD_GRAPHICS, thus the vt and framebuffer code executes a screen redraw and
several other functions before a set_par() is executed. This is believed
to be not a bug of linux but a bug of X/xdm. At least some X releases used
by SuSE and Debian show this behaviour.
There was a 2nd case, but that has been fixed by Antonino Daplas on
10-dec-2005.
This patch allows drivers to set a flag to inform fbcon_switch() that they
prefer a set_par() call on every console switch, working around the
problems caused by the broken X releases.
The flag will be used by the next release of cyblafb and might help other
drivers that assume a hardware state different to the one used by X.
As the default behaviour does not change, this patch should be acceptable
to everybody.

This bug is caused by using a stale font height value on vgacon_init.

Add ability to set rotation via sysfs. The attributes are located in
/sys/class/graphics/fb[n] and accepts 0 - unrotated; 1 - clockwise; 2 - upside
down; 3 - counterclockwise.
The attributes are:
con_rotate (r/w) - set rotation of the active console
con_rotate_all (w) - set rotation of all consoles
rotate (r/w) - set rotation of the framebuffer, if supported.
Currently, none of the drivers support this.
This is probably temporary, since con_rotate and con_rotate_all are

This patch series implements generic code to rotate the console at 90, 180,
and 270 degrees. The implementation is completely done in the framebuffer
console level, thus no changes to the framebuffer layer or to the drivers
are needed.
Console rotation is required by some Sharp-based devices where the natural
orientation of the display is not at 0 degrees. Also, users that have
displays that can pivot will benefit by having a console in portrait mode
if they so desire.
The choice to implement the code in the console layer rather than in the
framebuffer layer is due to the following reasons:
- it's fast
- it does not require driver changes
- it can coexist with devices that can rotate the display at the hardware level
- it complements graphics applications that can do display rotation
The changes to core fbcon are minimal-- recognition of the console
rotation angle so it can swap directions, origins and axes (xres vs yres,
xpanstep vs ypanstep, xoffset vs yoffset, etc) and storage of the rotation
angle per display. The bulk of the code that does the actual drawing to the
screen are placed in separate files. Each angle of rotation has separate
methods (bmove, clear, putcs, cursor, update_start which is derived from
update_var, and clear_margins). To mimimize processing time, the fontdata
are pre-rotated at each console switch (only if the font or the angle has
changed).
The option can be compiled out (CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_ROTATION = n) if
rotation is not needed.
Choosing the rotation angle can be done in several ways:
1. boot option fbcon=rotate:n, where
n = 0 - normal
n = 1 - 90 degrees (clockwise)
n = 2 - 180 degrees (upside down)
n = 3 - 270 degrees (counterclockwise)
2. echo n > /sys/class/graphics/fb[num]/con_rotate
where n is the same as described above. It sets the angle of rotation
of the current console
3 echo n > /sys/class/graphics/fb[num]/con_rotate_all
where n is the same as described above. Globally sets the angle of
rotation.
GOTCHAS:
The option, especially at angles of 90 and 270 degrees, will exercise
the least used code of drivers. Namely, at these angles, panning is done
in the x-axis, so it can reveal bugs in the driver if xpanstep is set
incorrectly. A workaround is to set xpanstep = 0.
Secondly, at these angles, the framebuffer memory access can be
unaligned if (fontheight * bpp) % 32 ~= 0 which can reveal bugs in the drivers
imageblit, fillrect and copyarea functions. (I think cfbfillrect may have
this buglet). A workaround is to use a standard 8x16 font.
Speed:
The scrolling speed difference between 0 and 180 degrees is minimal,
somewhere areound 1-2%. At 90 or 270 degress, speed drops down to a vicinity
of 30-40%. This is understandable because the blit direction is across the
framebuffer "direction." Scrolling will be helped at these angles if xpanstep
is not equal to zero, use of 8x16 fonts, and setting xres_virtual >= xres * 2.
Note: The code is tested on little-endian only, so I don't know if it will
work in big-endian. Please let me know, it will take only less than a minute
of your time.
This patch prepares fbcon for console rotation and contains the following
changes:
- add rotate field in struct fbcon_ops to keep fbcon's current rotation
angle
- add con_rotate field in struct display to store per-display rotation angle
- create a private copy of the current var to fbcon. This will prevent
fbcon from directly manipulating info->var, especially the fields xoffset,
yoffset and vmode.
- add ability to swap pertinent axes (xres, yres; xpanstep, ypanstep; etc)
depending on the rotation angle
- change global update_var() (function that sets the screen start address)
as an fbcon method update_start. This is required because the axes, start
offset, and/or direction can be reversed depending on the rotation angle.
- add fbcon method rotate_font() which will rotate each character bitmap to
the correct angle of rotation.
- add fbcon boot option 'rotate' to select the angle of rotation at bootime.
Currently does nothing until all patches are applied.

I converted the "rl" console font from the kbd utility to be a built-in font
for the framebuffer console, and I was wondering if you would be OK with
including it. I've generated a font_rl.c file and related minor
modifications. I find it's the most visually appealing of the kbd fonts which
is why I use it and selected it for conversion. I believe the font is GPL'd.

Currently the fb_find_nearest_mode() function finds a mode with screen
resolution closest to that described by the 'var' argument and with some
arbitrary refresh rate (eg. in the following sequence of refresh rates: 70 60
53 85 75, 53 is selected).
This patch fixes the function so that it looks for the closest mode as far as
both resolution and refresh rate are concerned. The function's first argument
is changed to fb_videomode so that the refresh rate can be specified by the
caller, as fb_var_screeninfo doesn't have any fields that could directly hold
this data.

If machine has more than 1 driver installed, and they all drive the same
hardware, it's possible that the driver's fb_release() method will attempt to
restore the hardware state to the initial state. This will leave the new
driver in an undefined state. To prevent this problem, initialize the new
driver by calling fb_set_par() when the old driver is released by fbcon.

According to Jon Smirl, filling in the field fb_cursor with soft_cursor for
drivers that do not support hardware cursors is redundant. The soft_cursor
function is usable by all drivers because it is just a wrapper around
fb_imageblit. And because soft_cursor is an fbcon-specific hook, the file is
moved to the console directory.
Thus, drivers that do not support hardware cursors can leave the fb_cursor
field blank. For drivers that do, they can fill up this field with their own
version.
The end result is a smaller code size. And if the framebuffer console is not
loaded, module/kernel size is also reduced because the soft_cursor module will
also not be loaded.

Some visually impaired people use hardware devices which directly read
the vga screen. When newt for instance asks to hide the cursor for
better visual aspect, the kernel puts the vga cursor out of the screen,
so that the cursor position can't be read by the hardware device. This
is a great loss for such people.
Here is a patch which uses the same technique as CUR_NONE for hiding the
cursor while still moving it.
Mario, you should apply it to the speakup kernel for access floppies
asap. I'll submit a 2.4 patch too.

This patch fixes a long-standing vgacon bug: characters with the bright bit
set were left on the screen and not blacked out. All I did was that I
lookuped up some examples on the net about setting the vga palette, and
added the call missing from the linux kernel, but included in all other
ones. It works for me.
You can test this by writing something with the bright set to the
console, for example:
echo -e "\e[1;31mhello there\e[0m"
and then wait for the console to blank itself (by default, after 10 mins
of inactivity), maybe making it faster using
setterm -blank 1
so you only have to wait 1 minute.
