Christoph Hellwig 233eebb9a9 xfs: correctly decrement the extent buffer index in xfs_bmap_del_extent
The code in xfs_bmap_del_extent does not correctly decrement the
extent buffer index when deleting a whole extent.  Most of the time
this gets caught by checks in xfs_bmapi that work around it and
decrement it manually and thus wasn't noticed so far.

Make sure to only call xfs_iext_get_ext after we've validate the
extent index when moving on to the next index in xfs_bunmapi.  Also
remove the old workaround for too large indices that has been

Christoph Hellwig ec90c55634 xfs: remove if_lastex
The if_lastex field in struct xfs_ifork is only used as a temporary
index during xfs_bmapi and xfs_bunmapi.  Instead of using the inode
fork to store it keep it local in the callchain.  Fortunately this
is very easy as we already pass a stack copy of it down the whole
chain which can simplify be changed to be passed by reference.

Dave Chinner 65333b4c3d xfs: kill xfs_fs_repair_cmn_err() macro
In certain cases of inode corruption, the xfs_fs_repair_cmn_err()
macro is used to output an extra message in the corruption report.
That extra message is "unmount and run xfs_repair", which really
applies to any corruption report. Each case that this macro is
called (except one) a following call to xfs_corruption_error() is
made to optionally dump more information about the error.

Hence, move the output of "run xfs_repair" to xfs_corruption_error()
so that it is output on all corruption reports.  Also, convert the
callers of the repair macro that don't call xfs_corruption_error()
to call it, hence provide consiѕtent error reporting for all cases
where xfs_fs_repair_cmn_err() used to be called.

Christoph Hellwig 1050c71e29 xfs: stop using xfs_trans_iget in the RT allocator
During mount we establish references to the RT inodes, which we keep for
the lifetime of the filesystem.  Instead of using xfs_trans_iget to grab
additional references when adding RT inodes to transactions use the
combination of xfs_ilock and xfs_trans_ijoin_ref, which archives the same
end result with less overhead.

Christoph Hellwig 9681153b46 xfs: add lockdep annotations for the rt inodes
The rt bitmap and summary inodes do not participate in the normal inode
locking protocol.  Instead the rt bitmap inode can be locked in any
transaction involving rt allocations, and the both of the rt inodes can
be locked at the same time.  Add specific lockdep subclasses for the rt
inodes to prevent lockdep from blowing up.

xfs_trans_iget to grab and lock the rt bitmap inode, which results in a
deadlock since the removal of the lock recursion counters in commit

	"xfs: simplify inode to transaction joining"

Fix this by acquiring and locking the inode in xfs_bmap_rtalloc before
calling into xfs_rtpick_extent and xfs_rtallocate_extent.

bpm@sgi.com 24446fc66f xfs: xfs_bmap_add_extent_delay_real should init br_startblock
When filling in the middle of a previous delayed allocation in
xfs_bmap_add_extent_delay_real, set br_startblock of the new delay
extent to the right to nullstartblock instead of 0 before inserting
the extent into the ifork (xfs_iext_insert), rather than setting
br_startblock afterward.

Adding the extent into the ifork with br_startblock=0 can lead to
the extent being copied into the btree by xfs_bmap_extent_to_btree
if we happen to convert from extents format to btree format before
updating br_startblock with the correct value.  The unexpected
addition of this delay extent to the btree can cause subsequent
XFS_WANT_CORRUPTED_GOTO filesystem shutdown in several
xfs_bmap_add_extent_delay_real cases where we are converting a delay
extent to real and unexpectedly find an extent already inserted.

With the bogus extent in the btree we shutdown the filesystem at
931.  The conversion from extents to btree format happens when the
number of extents in the inode increases above ip->i_df.if_ext_max.
xfs_bmap_extent_to_btree copies extents from the ifork into the
btree, ignoring all delalloc extents which are denoted by
br_startblock having some value of nullstartblock.

Dave Chinner 4ce159890c xfs: prevent extsize alignment from exceeding maximum extent size
When doing delayed allocation, if the allocation size is for a
maximally sized extent, extent size alignment can push it over this
limit. This results in an assert failure in xfs_bmbt_set_allf() as
the extent length is too large to find in the extent record.

Fix this by ensuring that we allow for space that extent size
alignment requires (up to 2 * (extsize -1) blocks as we have to
handle both head and tail alignment) when limiting the maximum size
of the extent.

Dave Chinner 14b064ceaa xfs: limit extent length for allocation to AG size
Delayed allocation extents can be larger than AGs, so when trying to
convert a large range we may scan every AG inside
xfs_bmap_alloc_nullfb() trying to find an AG with a size larger than
an AG. We should stop when we find the first AG with a maximum
possible allocation size. This causes excessive CPU usage when there
are lots of AGs.

The same problem occurs when doing preallocation of a range larger
than an AG.

Fix the problem by limiting real allocation lengths to the maximum
that an AG can support. This means if we have empty AGs, we'll stop
the search at the first of them. If there are no empty AGs, we'll
still scan them all, but that is a different problem....

Dave Chinner 309c848002 xfs: delayed alloc blocks beyond EOF are valid after writeback
There is an assumption in the parts of XFS that flushing a dirty
file will make all the delayed allocation blocks disappear from an
inode. That is, that after calling xfs_flush_pages() then
ip->i_delayed_blks will be zero.

This is an invalid assumption as we may have specualtive
preallocation beyond EOF and they are recorded in
ip->i_delayed_blks. A flush of the dirty pages of an inode will not
change the state of these blocks beyond EOF, so a non-zero
deeelalloc block count after a flush is valid.

The bmap code has an invalid ASSERT() that needs to be removed, and
the swapext code has a bug in that while it swaps the data forks
around, it fails to swap the i_delayed_blks counter associated with
the fork and hence can get the block accounting wrong.

Dave Chinner c726de4409 xfs: fix failed write truncation handling.
Since the move to the new truncate sequence we call xfs_setattr to
truncate down excessively instanciated blocks.  As shown by the testcase
in kernel.org BZ #22452 that doesn't work too well.  Due to the confusion
of the internal inode size, and the VFS inode i_size it zeroes data that
it shouldn't.

But full blown truncate seems like overkill here.  We only instanciate
delayed allocations in the write path, and given that we never released
the iolock we can't have converted them to real allocations yet either.

The only nasty case is pre-existing preallocation which we need to skip.
We already do this for page discard during writeback, so make the delayed
allocation block punching a generic function and call it from the failed
write path as well as xfs_aops_discard_page. The callers are
responsible for ensuring that partial blocks are not truncated away,
and that they hold the ilock.

Based on a fix originally from Christoph Hellwig. This version used
filesystem blocks as the range unit.

Dave Chinner 4472235205 xfs: Introduce XFS_IOC_ZERO_RANGE
XFS_IOC_ZERO_RANGE is the equivalent of an atomic XFS_IOC_UNRESVSP/
XFS_IOC_RESVSP call pair. It enabled ranges of written data to be
turned into zeroes without requiring IO or having to free and
reallocate the extents in the range given as would occur if we had
to punch and then preallocate them separately.  This enables
applications to zero parts of files very quickly without changing
the layout of the files in any way.

Tao Ma 9af2546508 xfs: Make fiemap work with sparse files
In xfs_vn_fiemap, we set bvm_count to fi_extent_max + 1 and want
to return fi_extent_max extents, but actually it won't work for
a sparse file. The reason is that in xfs_getbmap we will
calculate holes and set it in 'out', while out is malloced by
bmv_count(fi_extent_max+1) which didn't consider holes. So in the
worst case, if 'out' vector looks like
[hole, extent, hole, extent, hole, ... hole, extent, hole],
we will only return half of fi_extent_max extents.

This patch add a new parameter BMV_IF_NO_HOLES for bvm_iflags.
So with this flags, we don't use our 'out' in xfs_getbmap for
a hole. The solution is a bit ugly by just don't increasing
index of 'out' vector. I felt that it is not easy to skip it
at the very beginning since we have the complicated check and
some function like xfs_getbmapx_fix_eof_hole to adjust 'out'.

Christoph Hellwig 898621d5a7 xfs: simplify inode to transaction joining
Currently we need to either call IHOLD or xfs_trans_ihold on an inode when
joining it to a transaction via xfs_trans_ijoin.

This patches instead makes xfs_trans_ijoin usable on it's own by doing
an implicity xfs_trans_ihold, which also allows us to drop the third
argument.  For the case where we want to hold a reference on the inode
a xfs_trans_ijoin_ref wrapper is added which does the IHOLD and marks
the inode for needing an xfs_iput.  In addition to the cleaner interface
to the caller this also simplifies the implementation.

Christoph Hellwig e98c414f9a xfs: simplify log item descriptor tracking
Currently we track log item descriptor belonging to a transaction using a
complex opencoded chunk allocator.  This code has been there since day one
and seems to work around the lack of an efficient slab allocator.

This patch replaces it with dynamically allocated log item descriptors
from a dedicated slab pool, linked to the transaction by a linked list.

This allows to greatly simplify the log item descriptor tracking to the
point where it's just a couple hundred lines in xfs_trans.c instead of
a separate file.  The external API has also been simplified while we're
at it - the xfs_trans_add_item and xfs_trans_del_item functions to add/
delete items from a transaction have been simplified to the bare minium,
and the xfs_trans_find_item function is replaced with a direct dereference
of the li_desc field.  All debug code walking the list of log items in
a transaction is down to a simple list_for_each_entry.

Note that we could easily use a singly linked list here instead of the
double linked list from list.h as the fastpath only does deletion from
sequential traversal.  But given that we don't have one available as
a library function yet I use the list.h functions for simplicity.

Christoph Hellwig 288699feca xfs: drop dmapi hooks
Dmapi support was never merged upstream, but we still have a lot of hooks
bloating XFS for it, all over the fast pathes of the filesystem.

This patch drops over 700 lines of dmapi overhead.  If we'll ever get HSM
support in mainline at least the namespace events can be done much saner
in the VFS instead of the individual filesystem, so it's not like this
is much help for future work.

Dave Chinner 713bf88bba xfs: fix reservation release commit flag in xfs_bmap_add_attrfork()
xfs_bmap_add_attrfork() passes XFS_TRANS_PERM_LOG_RES to xfs_trans_commit()
to indicate that the commit should release the permanent log reservation
as part of the commit. This is wrong - the correct flag is
XFS_TRANS_RELEASE_LOG_RES - and it is only by the chance that both these
flags have the value of 0x4 that the code is doing the right thing.

Fix it by changing to use the correct flag.

Dave Chinner f0a0eaa8da xfs: suppress spurious uninitialised var warning in xfs_bmapi()
Initialise the xfs_bmalloca_t structure to zero to avoid uninitialised
variable warnings. This is done by zeroing the arg structure rather than
using the uninitialised_var() trick so we know for certain that the
structure is correctly initialised as xfs_bmapi is a very complex
function and it is difficult to prove warnings are spurious.

Dave Chinner 1c1c6ebcf5 xfs: Replace per-ag array with a radix tree
The use of an array for the per-ag structures requires reallocation
of the array when growing the filesystem. This requires locking
access to the array to avoid use after free situations, and the
locking is difficult to get right. To avoid needing to reallocate an
array, change the per-ag structures to an allocated object per ag
and index them using a tree structure.

The AGs are always densely indexed (hence the use of an array), but
the number supported is 2^32 and lookups tend to be random and hence
indexing needs to scale. A simple choice is a radix tree - it works
well with this sort of index.  This change also removes another
large contiguous allocation from the mount/growfs path in XFS.

The growing process now needs to change to only initialise the new
AGs required for the extra space, and as such only needs to
exclusively lock the tree for inserts. The rest of the code only
needs to lock the tree while doing lookups, and hence this will
remove all the deadlocks that currently occur on the m_perag_lock as
it is now an innermost lock. The lock is also changed to a spinlock
from a read/write lock as the hold time is now extremely short.

To complete the picture, the per-ag structures will need to be
reference counted to ensure that we don't free/modify them while
they are still in use.  This will be done in subsequent patch.

Christoph Hellwig 0b1b213fcf xfs: event tracing support
Convert the old xfs tracing support that could only be used with the
out of tree kdb and xfsidbg patches to use the generic event tracer.

To use it make sure CONFIG_EVENT_TRACING is enabled and then enable
all xfs trace channels by:

   echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/enable

or alternatively enable single events by just doing the same in one
event subdirectory, e.g.

   echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/xfs_ihold/enable

or set more complex filters, etc. In Documentation/trace/events.txt
all this is desctribed in more detail.  To reads the events do a

   cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/trace

Compared to the last posting this patch converts the tracing mostly to
the one tracepoint per callsite model that other users of the new
tracing facility also employ.  This allows a very fine-grained control
of the tracing, a cleaner output of the traces and also enables the
perf tool to use each tracepoint as a virtual performance counter,
     allowing us to e.g. count how often certain workloads git various
     spots in XFS.  Take a look at

for some examples.

Also the btree tracing isn't included at all yet, as it will require
additional core tracing features not in mainline yet, I plan to
deliver it later.

And the really nice thing about this patch is that it actually removes
many lines of code while adding this nice functionality:

Christoph Hellwig 6ef3554422 xfs: change the xfs_iext_insert / xfs_iext_remove
Change the xfs_iext_insert / xfs_iext_remove prototypes to pass more
information which will allow pushing the trace points from the callers
into those functions.  This includes folding the whichfork information
into the state variable to minimize the addition stack footprint.

Christoph Hellwig ca35dcd6ca xfs: switch to NOFS allocation under i_lock in xfs_getbmap
xfs_getbmap allocates memory with i_lock held, but i_lock is taken in
reclaim context so all allocations under it must avoid recursions into
the filesystem.

Reported by the new reclaim context tracing in lockdep.

Christoph Hellwig 7d095257e3 xfs: kill xfs_qmops
Kill the quota ops function vector and replace it with direct calls or
stubs in the CONFIG_XFS_QUOTA=n case.

Make sure we check XFS_IS_QUOTA_RUNNING in the right spots.  We can remove
the number of those checks because the XFS_TRANS_DQ_DIRTY flag can't be set
otherwise.

This brings us back closer to the way this code worked in IRIX and earlier
Linux versions, but we keep a lot of the more useful factoring of common
code.

Eventually we should also kill xfs_qm_bhv.c, but that's left for a later
patch.

Reduces the size of the source code by about 250 lines and the size of
XFS module by about 1.5 kilobytes with quotas enabled:

Christoph Hellwig 6321e3ed2a xfs: fix getbmap vs mmap deadlock
xfs_getbmap (or rather the formatters called by it) copy out the getbmap
structures under the ilock, which can deadlock against mmap.  This has
been reported via bugzilla a while ago (#717) and has recently also
shown up via lockdep.

So allocate a temporary buffer to format the kernel getbmap structures
into and then copy them out after dropping the locks.

A little problem with this is that we limit the number of extents we
can copy out by the maximum allocation size, but I see no real way
around that.

Christoph Hellwig 1a5902c5d2 xfs: remove m_attroffset
With the upcoming v3 inodes the default attroffset needs to be calculated
for each specific inode, so we can't cache it in the superblock anymore.

Also replace the assert for wrong inode sizes with a proper error check
also included in non-debug builds.  Note that the ENOSYS return for
that might seem odd, but that error is returned by xfs_mount_validate_sb
for all theoretically valid but not supported filesystem geometries.

Eric Sandeen 5af317c942 [XFS] Add new getbmap flags.
This adds a new output flag, BMV_OF_LAST to indicate if we've hit
the last extent in the inode.  This potentially saves an extra call
from userspace to see when the whole mapping is done.

It also adds BMV_IF_DELALLOC and BMV_OF_DELALLOC to request, and
indicate, delayed-allocation extents.  In this case bmv_block
is set to -2 (-1 was already taken for HOLESTARTBLOCK; unfortunately
these are the reverse of the in-kernel constants.)

These new flags facilitate addition of the new fiemap interface.

Rather than adding sh_delalloc, remove sh_unwritten & just test
the flags directly.

Eric Sandeen 8a7141a8b9 [XFS] convert xfs_getbmap to take formatter functions
Preliminary work to hook up fiemap, this allows us to pass in an
arbitrary formatter to copy extent data back to userspace.

The formatter takes info for 1 extent, a pointer to the user "thing*"
and a pointer to a "filled" variable to indicate whether a userspace
buffer did get filled in (for fiemap, hole "extents" are skipped).

I'm just using the getbmapx struct as a "common denominator" because
as far as I can see, it holds all info that any formatters will care
about.

("*thing" because fiemap doesn't pass the user pointer around, but rather
has a pointer to a fiemap info structure, and helpers associated with it)
