ACPI 5.0 provides extensions to the EINJ mechanism to specify the
target for the error injection - by APICID for cpu related errors,
by address for memory related errors, and by segment/bus/device/function
for PCIe related errors. Also extensions for vendor specific error
injections.

In SRAT v1, we had 8bit proximity domain (PXM) fields; SRAT v2 provides
32bits for these. The new fields were reserved before.
According to the ACPI spec, the OS must disregrard reserved fields.
In order to know whether or not, we must know what version the SRAT
table has.
This patch stores the SRAT table revision for later consumption
by arch specific __init functions.

This patch makes the cpuidle_states structure global (single copy)
instead of per-cpu. The statistics needed on per-cpu basis
by the governor are kept per-cpu. This simplifies the cpuidle
subsystem as state registration is done by single cpu only.
Having single copy of cpuidle_states saves memory. Rare case
of asymmetric C-states can be handled within the cpuidle driver
and architectures such as POWER do not have asymmetric C-states.
Having single/global registration of all the idle states,
dynamic C-state transitions on x86 are handled by
the boot cpu. Here, the boot cpu would disable all the devices,
re-populate the states and later enable all the devices,
irrespective of the cpu that would receive the notification first.

I originally submitted a patch to workaround this by pushing all Ejection
Requests and Device Checks onto the kacpi_hotplug queue.
http://marc.info/?l=linux-acpi&m=131678270930105&w=2
The patch is still insufficient in that Bus Checks also need to be added.
Rather than add all events, including non-PCI-hotplug events, to the
hotplug queue, mjg suggested that a better approach would be to modify
the acpiphp driver so only acpiphp events would be added to the
kacpi_hotplug queue.
It's a longer patch, but at least we maintain the benefit of having separate
queues in ACPI. This, of course, is still only a workaround the problem.
As Bjorn and mjg pointed out, we have to refactor a lot of this code to do
the right thing but at this point it is a better to have this code working.
The acpi core places all events on the kacpi_notify queue. When the acpiphp
driver is loaded and a PCI card with a PCI-to-PCI bridge is removed the
following call sequence occurs:
cleanup_p2p_bridge()
-> cleanup_bridge()
-> acpi_remove_notify_handler()
-> acpi_os_wait_events_complete()
-> flush_workqueue(kacpi_notify_wq)
which is the queue we are currently executing on and the process will hang.
Move all hotplug acpiphp events onto the kacpi_hotplug workqueue. In
handle_hotplug_event_bridge() and handle_hotplug_event_func() we can simply
push the rest of the work onto the kacpi_hotplug queue and then avoid the
deadlock.

All ACPICA locks are allocated by the same function,
acpi_os_create_lock(), with the help of a local variable called
"lock". Thus, when lockdep is enabled, it uses "lock" as the
name of all those locks and regards them as instances of the same
lock, which causes it to report possible locking problems with them
when there aren't any.
To work around this problem, define acpi_os_create_lock() as a macro
and make it pass its argument to spin_lock_init(), so that lockdep
uses it as the name of the new lock. Define this macron in a
Linux-specific file, to minimize the resulting modifications of
the OS-independent ACPICA parts.

Processor (CPU3, 0x03, 0x00000410, 0x06) {}
}
processor_physically_present(...) will be called to check whether those
processors are physically present.
Currently we have below codes in processor_physically_present,
cpuid = acpi_get_cpuid(...);
if ((cpuid == -1) && (num_possible_cpus() > 1))
return false;
return true;
In UP kernel, acpi_get_cpuid(...) always return -1 and
num_possible_cpus() always return 1, so
processor_physically_present(...) always returns true for all passed in
processor handles.
This is wrong for UP processor or SMP processor running UP kernel.
This patch removes the !SMP version of acpi_get_cpuid(), so both UP and
SMP kernel use the same acpi_get_cpuid function.
And for UP kernel, only processor 0 is valid.

APEI ERST firmware interface and implementation has no multiple users
in mind. For example, if there is four records in storage with ID: 1,
2, 3 and 4, if two ERST readers enumerate the records via
GET_NEXT_RECORD_ID as follow,
reader 1 reader 2
1
2
3
4
-1
-1
where -1 signals there is no more record ID.
Reader 1 has no chance to check record 2 and 4, while reader 2 has no
chance to check record 1 and 3. And any other GET_NEXT_RECORD_ID will
return -1, that is, other readers will has no chance to check any
record even they are not cleared by anyone.
This makes raw GET_NEXT_RECORD_ID not suitable for used by multiple
users.
To solve the issue, an in-memory ERST record ID cache is designed and
implemented. When enumerating record ID, the ID returned by
GET_NEXT_RECORD_ID is added into cache in addition to be returned to
caller. So other readers can check the cache to get all record ID
available.

The wakeup.run_wake_count ACPI device field is only used by the PCI
runtime PM code to "protect" devices from being prepared for
generating wakeup signals more than once in a row. However, it
really doesn't provide any protection, because (1) all of the
functions it is supposed to protect use their own reference counters
effectively ensuring that the device will be set up for generating
wakeup signals just once and (2) the PCI runtime PM code uses
wakeup.run_wake_count in a racy way, since nothing prevents
acpi_dev_run_wake() from being called concurrently from two different
threads for the same device.
Remove the wakeup.run_wake_count ACPI device field which is
unnecessary, confusing and used in a wrong way.

PCI: MSI: Move MSI-X entry definition to pci_regs.h
Fix up trivial conflicts in drivers/net/{skge.c,sky2.c} that had in the
meantime been converted to not use legacy PCI power management, and thus
no longer use pci_restore_state() at all (and that caused trivial
conflicts with the "make pci_restore_state return void" patch)
Move the evaluation of acpi_pci_osc_control_set() (to request control of
PCI Express native features) into acpi_pci_root_add() to avoid calling
it many times for the same root complex with the same arguments.
Additionally, check if all of the requisite _OSC support bits are set
before calling acpi_pci_osc_control_set() for a given root complex.

The wake_capable ACPI device flag is not necessary, because it is
only used in scan.c for recording the information that _PRW is
present for the given device. That information is only used by
acpi_add_single_object() to decide whether or not to call
acpi_bus_get_wakeup_device_flags(), so the flag may be dropped
if the _PRW check is moved to acpi_bus_get_wakeup_device_flags().
Moreover, acpi_bus_get_wakeup_device_flags() always returns 0,
so it really should be void.

There are no more users of acpi_bus_get_power(), so it can be
dropped. Moreover, it should be dropped, because it modifies

wrong.

Add function acpi_bus_update_power() for reading the actual power
state of an ACPI device and updating its device->power.state field
in such a way that its power resources' reference counters will
remain consistent with that field.
For this purpose introduce __acpi_bus_set_power() setting the
power state of an ACPI device without updating its
device->power.state field and make acpi_bus_set_power() and
acpi_bus_update_power() use it (acpi_bus_set_power() retains the
current behavior for now).

There is a number of problems with acpi_pm_device_sleep_state() now.
First, if _S0W is not defined, it prevents devices from being put
into D3 by PCI runtime PM, which shouldn't happen. Second, it
shouldn't use adev->wakeup.state.enabled, because if it's set, it
only means that either the device is permanently enabled to wake up
the system, or that it has been enabled to do that through
/proc/acpi/wakeup. Finally, it should be compiled if CONFIG_PM_SLEEP
is not set, so that PCI runtime PM works correctly in that case.

The current ACPI GPEs initialization code has a problem that it
enables some GPEs pointed to by device _PRW methods, generally
intended for signaling wakeup events (system or device wakeup).
These GPEs are then almost immediately disabled by the ACPI namespace
scanning code with the help of acpi_gpe_can_wake(), but it would be
better not to enable them at all until really necessary.
Modify the initialization of GPEs so that the ones that have
associated _Lxx or _Exx methods and are not pointed to by any _PRW
methods will be enabled after the namespace scan is complete.

There is the assumption in acpi_pci_osc_control_set() that it is
always sufficient to compare the mask of _OSC control bits to be
requested with the result of an _OSC query where all of the known
control bits have been checked. However, in general, that need not
be the case. For example, if an _OSC feature A depends on an _OSC
feature B and control of A, B plus another _OSC feature C is
requested simultaneously, the BIOS may return A, B, C, while it would
only return C if A and C were requested without B.
That may result in passing a wrong mask of _OSC control bits to an
_OSC control request, in which case the BIOS may only grant control
of a subset of the requested features. Moreover, acpi_pci_run_osc()
will return error code if that happens and the caller of
acpi_pci_osc_control_set() will not know that it's been granted
control of some _OSC features. Consequently, the system will
generally not work as expected.
Apart from this acpi_pci_osc_control_set() always uses the mask
of _OSC control bits returned by the very first invocation of
acpi_pci_query_osc(), but that is done with the second argument
equal to OSC_PCI_SEGMENT_GROUPS_SUPPORT which generally happens
to affect the returned _OSC control bits.
For these reasons, make acpi_pci_osc_control_set() always check if
control of the requested _OSC features will be granted before making
the final control request. As a result, the osc_control_qry and
osc_queried members of struct acpi_pci_root are not necessary any
more, so drop them and remove the remaining code referring to them.

The ACPI_PREEMPTION_POINT() logic was introduced in commit 8bd108d
(ACPICA: add preemption point after each opcode parse). The follow up
commits abe1dfab6, 138d15692, c084ca70 tried to fix the preemption logic
back and forth, but nobody noticed that the usage of
in_atomic_preempt_off() in that context is wrong.
The check which guards the call of cond_resched() is:
if (!in_atomic_preempt_off() && !irqs_disabled())
in_atomic_preempt_off() is not intended for general use as the comment
above the macro definition clearly says:
* Check whether we were atomic before we did preempt_disable():
* (used by the scheduler, *after* releasing the kernel lock)
On a CONFIG_PREEMPT=n kernel the usage of in_atomic_preempt_off() works by
accident, but with CONFIG_PREEMPT=y it's just broken.
The whole purpose of the ACPI_PREEMPTION_POINT() is to reduce the latency
on a CONFIG_PREEMPT=n kernel, so make ACPI_PREEMPTION_POINT() depend on
CONFIG_PREEMPT=n and remove the in_atomic_preempt_off() check.

It turns out that there is a bit in the _CST for Intel FFH C3
that tells the OS if we should be checking BM_STS or not.
Linux has been unconditionally checking BM_STS.
If the chip-set is configured to enable BM_STS,
it can retard or completely prevent entry into
deep C-states -- as illustrated by turbostat:

Currently, during initialization ACPICA walks the entire ACPI
namespace in search of any device objects with assciated _PRW
methods. All of the _PRW methods found are executed in the process
to extract the GPE information returned by them, so that the GPEs in
question can be marked as "able to wakeup" (more precisely, the
ACPI_GPE_CAN_WAKE flag is set for them). The only purpose of this
exercise is to avoid enabling the CAN_WAKE GPEs automatically, even
if there are _Lxx/_Exx methods associated with them. However, it is
both costly and unnecessary, because the host OS has to execute the
_PRW methods anyway to check which devices can wake up the system
from sleep states. Moreover, it then uses full information
returned by _PRW, including the GPE information, so it can take care
of disabling the GPEs if necessary.
Remove the code that walks the namespace and executes _PRW from
ACPICA and modify comments to reflect that change. Make
acpi_bus_set_run_wake_flags() disable GPEs for wakeup devices
so that they don't cause spurious wakeup events to be signaled.
This not only reduces the complexity of the ACPICA initialization
code, but in some cases it should reduce the kernel boot time as
well.
Unfortunately, for this purpose we need a new ACPICA function,
acpi_gpe_can_wake(), to be called by the host OS in order to disable
the GPEs that can wake up the system and were previously enabled by
acpi_ev_initialize_gpe_block() or acpi_ev_update_gpes() (such a GPE
should be disabled only once, because the initialization code enables
it only once, but it may be pointed to by _PRW for multiple devices
and that's why the additional function is necessary).

The acpi_set_gpe() function is a little awkward, because it doesn't
really work as advertised in the "disable" case. Namely, if a GPE
has been enabled with acpi_enable_gpe() and triggered a notification
to occur, and if acpi_set_gpe() is used to disable it before
acpi_ev_asynch_enable_gpe() runs, the GPE will be immediately enabled
by the latter as though the acpi_set_gpe() had no effect.
Thus, since it's been possible to make all of its callers use
alternative operations to disable or enable GPEs, acpi_set_gpe() can
be dropped.

ACPICA uses reference counters to avoid disabling GPEs too early in
case they have been enabled for many times. This is done separately
for runtime and for wakeup, but the wakeup GPE reference counter is
not really necessary, because GPEs are only enabled to wake up the
system at the hardware level by acpi_enter_sleep_state(). Thus it
only is necessary to set the corresponding bits in the wakeup enable
masks of these GPEs' registers right before the system enters a sleep
state. Moreover, the GPE wakeup enable bits can only be set when the
target sleep state of the system is known and they need to be cleared
immediately after wakeup regardless of how many wakeup devices are
associated with a given GPE.
On the basis of the above observations, introduce function
acpi_gpe_wakeup() to be used for setting or clearing the enable bit
corresponding to a given GPE in its enable register's enable_for_wake
mask. Modify the ACPI suspend and wakeup code the use
acpi_gpe_wakeup() instead of acpi_{enable|disable}_gpe() to set
and clear GPE enable bits in their registers' enable_for_wake masks
during system transitions to a sleep state and back to the working
state, respectively. [This will allow us to drop the third
argument of acpi_{enable|disable}_gpe() and simplify the GPE
handling code.]

ACPICA uses acpi_hw_write_gpe_enable_reg() to re-enable a GPE after
an event signaled by it has been handled. However, this function
writes the entire GPE enable mask to the GPE's enable register which
may not be correct. Namely, if one of the other GPEs in the same
register was previously enabled by acpi_enable_gpe() and subsequently
disabled using acpi_set_gpe(), acpi_hw_write_gpe_enable_reg() will
re-enable it along with the target GPE.
To fix this issue rework acpi_hw_write_gpe_enable_reg() so that it
calls acpi_hw_low_set_gpe() with a special action value,
ACPI_GPE_COND_ENABLE, that will make it only enable the GPE if the
corresponding bit in its register's enable_for_run mask is set.

ACPICA uses acpi_ev_enable_gpe() for enabling GPEs at the low level,
which is incorrect, because this function only enables the GPE if the
corresponding bit in its enable register's enable_for_run mask is set.
This causes acpi_set_gpe() to work incorrectly if used for enabling
GPEs that were not previously enabled with acpi_enable_gpe(). As a
result, among other things, wakeup-only GPEs are never enabled by
acpi_enable_wakeup_device(), so the devices that use them are unable
to wake up the system.
To fix this issue remove acpi_ev_enable_gpe() and its counterpart
acpi_ev_disable_gpe() and replace acpi_hw_low_disable_gpe() with
acpi_hw_low_set_gpe() that will be used instead to manipulate GPE
enable bits at the low level. Make the users of acpi_ev_enable_gpe()
and acpi_ev_disable_gpe() call acpi_hw_low_set_gpe() instead and
make sure that GPE enable masks are only updated by acpi_enable_gpe()
and acpi_disable_gpe() when GPE reference counters change from 0
to 1 and from 1 to 0, respectively.

ERST is a way provided by APEI to save and retrieve hardware error
record to and from some simple persistent storage (such as flash).
The Linux kernel support implementation is quite simple and workable
in NMI context. So it can be used to save hardware error record into
flash in hardware error exception or NMI handler, where other more
complex persistent storage such as disk is not usable. After saving
hardware error records via ERST in hardware error exception or NMI
handler, the error records can be retrieved and logged into disk or
network after a clean reboot.
For more information about ERST, please refer to ACPI Specification

HEST describes error sources in detail; communicating operational
parameters (i.e. severity levels, masking bits, and threshold values)
to OS as necessary. It also allows the platform to report error
sources for which OS would typically not implement support (for
example, chipset-specific error registers).
HEST information may be needed by other subsystems. For example, HEST
PCIE AER error source information describes whether a PCIE root port
works in "firmware first" mode, this is needed by general PCIE AER
error subsystem. So a public HEST tabling parsing interface is

Some ACPI IO accessing need to be done in atomic context. For example,
APEI ERST operations may be used for permanent storage in hardware
error handler. That is, it may be called in atomic contexts such as
IRQ or NMI, etc. And, ERST/EINJ implement their operations via IO
memory/port accessing. But the IO memory accessing method provided by
ACPI (acpi_read/acpi_write) maps the IO memory during it is accessed,
so it can not be used in atomic context. To solve the issue, the IO
memory should be pre-mapped during EINJ/ERST initializing. A linked
list is used to record which memory area has been mapped, when memory
is accessed in hardware error handler, search the linked list for the
mapped virtual address from the given physical address.

Although the majority of PCI devices can generate PMEs that in
principle may be used to wake up devices suspended at run time,
platform support is generally necessary to convert PMEs into wake-up
events that can be delivered to the kernel. If ACPI is used for this
purpose, PME signals generated by a PCI device will trigger the ACPI
GPE associated with the device to generate an ACPI wake-up event that
we can set up a handler for, provided that everything is configured
correctly.
Unfortunately, the subset of PCI devices that have GPEs associated
with them is quite limited. The devices without dedicated GPEs have
to rely on the GPEs associated with other devices (in the majority of
cases their upstream bridges and, possibly, the root bridge) to
generate ACPI wake-up events in response to PME signals from them.
Add ACPI platform support for PCI PME wake-up:
o Add a framework making is possible to use ACPI system notify
handlers for run-time PM.
o Add new PCI platform callback ->run_wake() to struct
pci_platform_pm_ops allowing us to enable/disable the platform to
generate wake-up events for given device. Implemet this callback
for the ACPI platform.
o Define ACPI wake-up handlers for PCI devices and PCI root buses and
make the PCI-ACPI binding code register wake-up notifiers for all
PCI devices present in the ACPI tables.
o Add function pci_dev_run_wake() which can be used by PCI drivers to
check if given device is capable of generating wake-up events at
run time.

ACPI GPEs may map to multiple devices. The current GPE interface
only provides a mechanism for enabling and disabling GPEs, making
it difficult to change the state of GPEs at runtime without extensive
cooperation between devices.
Add an API to allow devices to indicate whether or not they want
their device's GPE to be enabled for both runtime and wakeup events.
Remove the old GPE type handling entirely, which gets rid of various

We discovered that at least one machine (HP Envy), methods in the DSDT
attempt to call external methods defined in a dynamically loaded SSDT.
Unfortunately, the DSDT methods we are trying to call are part of the
EC initialization, which happens very early, and the the dynamic SSDT
is only loaded when a processor _PDC method runs much later.
This results in namespace lookup errors for the (as of yet) undefined
methods.
Since Windows doesn't have any issues with this machine, we take it
as a hint that they must be evaluating _PDC much earlier than we are.
Thus, the proper thing for Linux to do should be to match the Windows
implementation more closely.
Provide a mechanism to call _PDC before we enable the EC. Doing so loads
the dynamic tables, and allows the EC to be enabled correctly.
The ACPI processor driver will still evaluate _PDC in its .add() method
to cover the hotplug case.

This interface is mainly intended (and implemented) for ACPI _PPC BIOS
frequency limitations, but other cpufreq drivers can also use it for
similar use-cases.
Why is this needed:
Currently it's not obvious why cpufreq got limited.
People see cpufreq/scaling_max_freq reduced, but this could have
happened by:
- any userspace prog writing to scaling_max_freq
- thermal limitations
- hardware (_PPC in ACPI case) limitiations
Therefore export bios_limit (in kHz) to:
- Point the user that it's the BIOS (broken or intended) which limits
frequency
- Export it as a sysfs interface for userspace progs.
While this was a rarely used feature on laptops, there will appear
more and more server implemenations providing "Green IT" features like
allowing the service processor to limit the frequency. People want
to know about HW/BIOS frequency limitations.
All ACPI P-state driven cpufreq drivers are covered with this patch:
- powernow-k8
- powernow-k7
- acpi-cpufreq

However, _OSC alone is insufficient for newer BIOSes. Part of ACPI
4.0 is the new APEI (ACPI Platform Error Interfaces) which is a way
for OS and BIOS to handshake over which errors for which components
each will handle. One table in ACPI 4.0 is the Hardware Error Source
Table (HEST), where BIOS can define that errors for certain PCIe
devices (or all devices), should be handled by BIOS ("Firmware First
mode"), rather than be handled by the OS.
Dell PowerEdge 11G server BIOS defines Firmware First mode in HEST, so
that it may manage such errors, log them to the System Event Log, and
possibly take other actions. The aer driver should honor this, and
not attach itself to devices noted as such.
Furthermore, Kenji Kaneshige reminded us to disallow changing the AER
registers when respecting Firmware First mode. Platform firmware is
expected to manage these, and if changes to them are allowed, it could
break that firmware's behavior.
The HEST parsing code may be replaced in the future by a more
feature-rich implementation. This patch provides the minimum needed
to prevent breakage until that implementation is available.

The wakeup.prepared flag is used for marking devices that have the
wake-up power already enabled, so that the wake-up power is not
enabled twice in a row for the same device. This assumes, however,
that device wake-up power will only be enabled once, while the device
is being prepared for a system-wide sleep transition, and the second
attempt is made by acpi_enable_wakeup_device_prep().
With the upcoming PCI wake-up rework this assumption will not hold
any more for PCI bridges and the root bridge whose wake-up power
may be enabled as a result of wake-up enable propagation from other
devices (eg. add-on devices that are not associated with any GPEs).
Thus, there may be many attempts to enable wake-up power on a PCI
bridge or the root bridge during a system power state transition
and it's better to replace wakeup.prepared with a reference counter.

If the dynamic region is created and added to resource list over and over again,
it has the potential to be a memory leak by growing the list every time.
This patch fixes the memory leak, as below
1) add a new field "count" to struct acpi_res_list.
When inserting, if the region(addr, len) is already in the resource
list, we just increase "count", otherwise, the region is inserted
with count=1.
When deleting, the "count" is decreased, if it's decreased to 0,
the region is deleted from the resource list.
With "count", the region with same address and length can only be
inserted to the resource list once, so prevent potential memory leak.
2) add a new function acpi_os_invalidate_address, which is called when
region is deleted.

If the BIOS reports an invalid throttling state (which seems to be
fairly common after system boot), a reset is done to state T0.
Because of a check in acpi_processor_get_throttling_ptc(), the reset
never actually gets executed, which results in the error reoccurring
on every access of for example /proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/throttling.
Add a 'force' option to acpi_processor_set_throttling() to ensure
the reset really takes effect.

BIOSes use system notify events in device-specific ways that require
the driver to be involved.
This patch adds a ACPI_DRIVER_ALL_NOTIFY_EVENTS driver flag. When a
driver sets this flag and supplies a .notify method, Linux/ACPI calls
the .notify method for ALL notify events on the device, not just the
device-specific (0x80-0xff) events.

ACPI_PROCESSOR_OBJECT_HID is a synthetic _HID that Linux generates
for "Processor" definitions. Unlike "Device" definitions, "Processor"

This does change the user-visible _HID for "Processor" objects --

Asus boards have an ACPI interface for interacting with the hwmon (fan,

information via the standard sysfs interface.
There are two different ACPI interfaces:
- an old one (based on RVLT/RFAN/RTMP)
- a new one (GGRP/GITM)
Both may be present but there a few cases (my board, sigh) where the
new interface is just an empty stub; the driver defaults to the old one
when both are present.
The old interface has received a considerable testing, but I'm still
awaiting confirmation from my tester that the new one is working as
expected (hence the debug code is still enabled).
Currently all the attributes are read-only, though a (partial) control

This patch adds support for ACPI device driver .notify() methods. If
such a method is present, Linux/ACPI installs a handler for device
notifications (but not for system notifications such as Bus Check,
Device Check, etc). When a device notification occurs, Linux/ACPI
passes it on to the driver's .notify() method.
In most cases, this removes the need for drivers to install their own
handlers for device-specific notifications.
For fixed hardware devices like some power and sleep buttons, there's
no notification value because there's no control method to execute a
Notify opcode. When a fixed hardware device generates an event, we
handle it the same as a regular device notification, except we send
a ACPI_FIXED_HARDWARE_EVENT value. This is outside the normal 0x0-0xff
range used by Notify opcodes.
Several drivers install their own handlers for system Bus Check and
Device Check notifications so they can support hot-plug. This patch
doesn't affect that usage.

support it, by setting this bit.
Some BIOSes use this bit to choose between hardware or software coordination

0119509c4f
from Matthew Garrett <mjg59@srcf.ucam.org>
This patch got removed because of a regression: ThinkPads with a
Intel graphics card and an Integrated Graphics Device BIOS implementation
stopped working.
In fact, they only worked because the ACPI device of the discrete, the
wrong one, got used (via int10). So ACPI functions were poking on the wrong
hardware used which is a sever bug.
The next patch provides support for above ThinkPads to be able to
switch brightness via the legacy thinkpad_acpi driver and automatically
detect when to use it.
Original commit message from Matthew Garrett:
Vendors often ship machines with a choice of integrated or discrete
graphics, and use the same DSDT for both. As a result, the ACPI video
module will locate devices that may not exist on this specific platform.
Attempt to determine whether the device exists or not, and abort the
device creation if it doesn't.

Maybe the incorrect power state is returned on the bogus bios, which
is different with the real power state. For example: the bios returns D0
state and the real power state is D3. OS expects to set the device to D0
state. In such case if OS uses the power state returned by the BIOS and
checks the device power state very strictly in power transition, the device
can't be transited to the correct power state.
So the boot option of "acpi.power_nocheck=1" is added to avoid checking
the device power in the course of device power transition.

As of version 2.0, ACPI can return 64-bit integers. The current
acpi_evaluate_integer only supports 64-bit integers on 64-bit platforms.
Change the argument to take a pointer to an acpi_integer so we support
64-bit integers on all platforms.

when there is no ECDT table and no _INI object for EC device, it will be
enabled before scanning ACPI device. But it is too late after the following
the commit is merged.

> Author: Robert Hancock <hancockr@shaw.ca>
> Date: Fri Feb 15 01:27:20 2008 -0800
>x86: validate against acpi motherboard resources
After the above commit is merged, OS will check whether MCFG area is
reserved in ACPI motherboard resources by calling the function of
acpi_get_devices when there exists MCFG table. In the acpi_get_devices the _STA
object will be evaluated to check the status of the ACPI device. On some broken
BIOS the MYEC object of EC device is initialized as one, which indicates that
EC operation region is already accessible before enabling EC device. So on these
broken BIOS the EC operation region will be accessed in course of evaluating
the _STA object before enabling EC device, which causes that OS will print the
following warning messages:
>ACPI Error (evregion-0315): No handler for Region [EC__] (ffff88007f8145e8)
[EmbeddedControl] [20080609]
>ACPI Error (exfldio-0290): Region EmbeddedControl(3) has no handler [20080321]
>ACPI Error (psparse-0530): Method parse/execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0.SBRG.
EC__.BAT1._STA] (Node ffff81013fc17a00), AE_NOT_EXIST
>ACPI Error (uteval-0233): Method execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0.SBRG.EC__.BAT1.
_STA] (Node ffff81013fc17a00), AE_NOT_EXIST
Although the above warning message is harmless, it looks confusing.
So it is necessary to enable EC device as early as possible.Maybe it is
appropriate to enable it immediately after ACPI full initialization.

The hotplug notification handler and drivers' notification handler all
run in one workqueue. Before hotplug removes an acpi device, the
device driver's notification handler is already be recorded to run just
after global notification handler. After hotplug notification handler
runs, acpica will notice a NULL notification handler and crash.
So now we run run hotplug in another workqueue and wait
for all acpi notication handlers finish.

hotplug can be affected.

* Introduce function acpi_pm_device_sleep_wake() for enabling and
disabling the system wake-up capability of devices that are power
manageable by ACPI.
* Introduce function acpi_bus_can_wakeup() allowing other (dependent)
subsystems to check if ACPI is able to enable the system wake-up
capability of given device.
* Introduce callback .sleep_wake() in struct pci_platform_pm_ops and
for the ACPI PCI 'driver' make it use acpi_pm_device_sleep_wake().
* Introduce callback .can_wakeup() in struct pci_platform_pm_ops and
for the ACPI 'driver' make it use acpi_bus_can_wakeup().
* Move the PME# handlig code out of pci_enable_wake() and split it
into two functions, pci_pme_capable() and pci_pme_active(),
allowing the caller to check if given device is capable of
generating PME# from given power state and to enable/disable the
device's PME# functionality, respectively.
* Modify pci_enable_wake() to use the new ACPI callbacks and the new
PME#-related functions.
* Drop the generic .platform_enable_wakeup() callback that is not
used any more.
* Introduce device_set_wakeup_capable() that will set the
power.can_wakeup flag of given device.
* Rework PCI device PM initialization so that, if given device is
capable of generating wake-up events, either natively through the
PME# mechanism, or with the help of the platform, its
power.can_wakeup flag is set and its power.should_wakeup flag is
unset as appropriate.
* Make ACPI set the power.can_wakeup flag for devices found to be
wake-up capable by it.
* Make the ACPI wake-up code enable/disable GPEs for devices that
have the wakeup.flags.prepared flag set (which means that their
wake-up power has been enabled).

Add a new sysfs entry under cpuidle states. desc - can be used by driver to
communicate to userspace any specific information about the state.
This helps in identifying the exact hardware C-states behind the ACPI C-state

Idea is to export this through powertop, which will help to map the C-state
reported by powertop to actual hardware C-state.

The raw_pci_read() interface (as the raw_pci_ops->read() before it)
unconditionally fills in a 32-bit integer return value regardless of the
size of the operation requested.
So claiming to take a "void *" is wrong, as is passing in a pointer to
just a byte variable.
Noticed by pageexec when enabling -fstack-protector (which needs other

Small ACPICA extension to be able to store the name of operation regions in osl.c later
In ACPI, AML can define accesses to IO ports and System Memory by Operation
Regions. Those are not registered as done by PNPACPI using resource templates
(and _CRS/_SRS methods).
The IO ports and System Memory regions may get accessed by arbitrary AML code.
When native drivers are accessing the same resources bad things can happen
(e.g. a critical shutdown temperature of 3000 C every 2 months or so).
It is not really possible to register the operation regions via
request_resource, as they often overlap with pnp or other resources (e.g.
statically setup IO resources below 0x100).
This approach stores all Operation Region declarations (IO and System Memory
only) at ACPI table parse time. It offers a similar functionality like
request_region and let drivers which are known to possibly use the same IO
ports and Memory which are also often used by ACPI (hwmon and i2c) check for
ACPI interference.
A boot parameter acpi_enforce_resources=strict/lax/no is provided, which
is default set to lax:
- strict: let conflicting drivers fail to load with an error message
- lax: let conflicting driver work normal with a warning message
- no: no functional change at all
Depending on the feedback and the kind of interferences we see, this
should be set to strict at later time.
Goal of this patch set is:
- Identify ACPI interferences in bug reports (very hard to reproduce
and to identify)
- Find BIOSes for that an ACPI driver should exist for specific HW
instead of a native one.
- stability in general
Provide acpi_check_{mem_}region.
Drivers can additionally check against possible ACPI interference by also
invoking this shortly before they call request_region.
If -EBUSY is returned, the driver must not load.
Use acpi_enforce_resources=strict/lax/no options to:
- strict: let conflicting drivers fail to load with an error message
- lax: let conflicting driver work normal with a warning message
- no: no functional change at all

Accordint to ACPI spec, the _TSD object provides T-state control cross
logical processor dependency information to OSPM.
After the _TSD data for all cpus are obtained, OSPM will set up
the T-state coordination between CPUs.
Of course if the _TSD doesn't exist or _TSD data is incorrect , it is
assumed that there is no T-state coordination and T-state is changed
independently.
Now there is no proper solution to update T-state coordination after
one cpu is hotplugged. So this patch won't support hotplugged cpu very well.

Register ACPI processor as thermal cooling devices.
A combination of processor T-state and P-state are used for thermal throttling.
the processor will reduce the frequency first and then set the T-state.
we use cpufreq_thermal_reduction_pctg to calculate the cpufreq limit,
and call cpufreq_verify_with_limit to set the cpufreq limit.
if cpufreq driver is loaded, then we have four cooling state for cpufreq control.
cooling state 0: cpufreq limit == max_freq
cooling state 1: cpufreq limit == max_freq * 80%
cooling state 2: cpufreq limit == max_freq * 60%
cooling state 3: cpufreq limit == max_freq * 40%
after the cpufreq limit is set to 40 percentage of the max_freq,
we use T-state for cooling.
eg. a processor has P-state support, and it has 8 T-state (T0-T7),
the max_state of the proceesor is 10:
state cpufreq-limit T-state
0: max_freq T0
1: max_freq * 80% T0
2: max_freq * 60% T0
3: max_freq * 40% T0
4: max_freq * 40% T1
5: max_freq * 40% T2
6: max_freq * 40% T3
7: max_freq * 40% T4

The execution of ACPI global control methods _GTS and _BFS is
currently tied to the preparation to enter a sleep state and to the
leaving of the sleep state, respectively. However, these functions
are called before disabling the nonboot CPUs and after enabling
them, respectively (in fact, on ACPI 1.0x systems the first of them
ought to be called before suspending devices), while according to the
ACPI specification, _GTS is to be executed right prior to entering
the system sleep state and _BFS is to be executed right after the
platfor firmware has returned control to the OS on wake up.
Move the execution of _GTS and _BFS to the right places.

This patch supports the upcomming Intel IOMMU hardware a.k.a. Intel(R)

FAQ! (questions from akpm, answers from ak)
> So... what's all this code for?
>
> I assume that the intent here is to speed things up under Xen, etc?
Yes in some cases, but not this code. That would be the Xen version of this
code that could potentially assign whole devices to guests. I expect this to
be only useful in some special cases though because most hardware is not
virtualizable and you typically want an own instance for each guest.
Ok at some point KVM might implement this too; i likely would use this code
for this.
> Do we
> have any benchmark results to help us to decide whether a merge would be
> justified?
The main advantage for doing it in the normal kernel is not performance, but
more safety. Broken devices won't be able to corrupt memory by doing random
DMA.
Unfortunately that doesn't work for graphics yet, for that need user space
interfaces for the X server are needed.
There are some potential performance benefits too:
- When you have a device that cannot address the complete address range an
IOMMU can remap its memory instead of bounce buffering. Remapping is likely
cheaper than copying.
- The IOMMU can merge sg lists into a single virtual block. This could
potentially speed up SG IO when the device is slow walking SG lists. [I
long ago benchmarked 5% on some block benchmark with an old MPT Fusion; but
it probably depends a lot on the HBA]
And you get better driver debugging because unexpected memory accesses from
the devices will cause a trappable event.
>
> Does it slow anything down?
It adds more overhead to each IO so yes.
This patch:
Add support for early detection and parsing of DMAR's (DMA Remapping) reported
to OS via ACPI tables.
DMA remapping(DMAR) devices support enables independent address translations
for Direct Memory Access(DMA) from Devices. These DMA remapping devices are
reported via ACPI tables and includes pci device scope covered by these DMA
remapping device.

ACPI uses acpi_get_register() in order to get into suspend.
This function is guarded by acpi_gbl_hardware_lock, which will be carried
into resume phase.
At resume interrupts are enabled and first ACPI interrupt deadlocks on this
lock.
Solution seems to be to not lock register read, as there are no concurrent
activity at this point.

cpuidle: re-write
Some portions have been rewritten to make the code cleaner and lighter
weight. The following is a list of changes:
1.) the state name is now included in the sysfs interface
2.) detection, hotplug, and available state modifications are handled by
CPUIDLE drivers directly
3.) the CPUIDLE idle handler is only ever installed when at least one
cpuidle_device is enabled and ready
4.) the menu governor BM code no longer overflows
5.) the sysfs attributes are now printed as unsigned integers, avoiding
negative values
6.) a variety of other small cleanups
Also, Idle drivers are no longer swappable during runtime through the
CPUIDLE sysfs inteface. On i386 and x86_64 most idle handlers (e.g.
poll, mwait, halt, etc.) don't benefit from an infrastructure that
supports multiple states, so I think using a more general case idle
handler selection mechanism would be cleaner.

cpuidle: add the 'menu' governor
Here is my first take at implementing an idle PM governor that takes
full advantage of NO_HZ. I call it the 'menu' governor because it
considers the full list of idle states before each entry.
I've kept the implementation fairly simple. It attempts to guess the
next residency time and then chooses a state that would meet at least
the break-even point between power savings and entry cost. To this end,
it selects the deepest idle state that satisfies the following
constraints:
1. If the idle time elapsed since bus master activity was detected
is below a threshold (currently 20 ms), then limit the selection
to C2-type or above.
2. Do not choose a state with a break-even residency that exceeds
the expected time remaining until the next timer interrupt.
3. Do not choose a state with a break-even residency that exceeds
the elapsed time between the last pair of break events,
excluding timer interrupts.
This governor has an advantage over "ladder" governor because it
proactively checks how much time remains until the next timer interrupt
using the tick infrastructure. Also, it handles device interrupt
activity more intelligently by not including timer interrupts in break
event calculations. Finally, it doesn't make policy decisions using the
number of state entries, which can have variable residency times (NO_HZ
makes these potentially very large), and instead only considers sleep
time deltas.
The menu governor can be selected during runtime using the cpuidle sysfs
interface like so:
"echo "menu" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuidle/current_governor"

cpuidle take2: Core cpuidle infrastructure
Announcing 'cpuidle', a new CPU power management infrastructure to manage
idle CPUs in a clean and efficient manner.
cpuidle separates out the drivers that can provide support for multiple types
of idle states and policy governors that decide on what idle state to use
at run time.
A cpuidle driver can support multiple idle states based on parameters like
varying power consumption, wakeup latency, etc (ACPI C-states for example).
A cpuidle governor can be usage model specific (laptop, server,
laptop on battery etc).
Main advantage of the infrastructure being, it allows independent development
of drivers and governors and allows for better CPU power management.
A huge thanks to Adam Belay and Shaohua Li who were part of this mini-project
since its beginning and are greatly responsible for this patchset.
This patch:
Core cpuidle infrastructure.
Introduces a new abstraction layer for cpuidle:
* which manages drivers that can support multiple idles states. Drivers
can be generic or particular to specific hardware/platform
* allows pluging in multiple policy governors that can take idle state policy
decision
* The core also has a set of sysfs interfaces with which administrato can know
about supported drivers and governors and switch them at run time.

S4 suspend to disk will disable GPE's permanently
because acpi_gpe_sleep_prepare() does not have
a counterpart at resume time. Thus, those devices
became unavailable for wakeup from subsequent
S3 suspend-to-ram.
Here acpi_gpe_sleep_prepare() is removed, and upon suspend
acpi_enable_wakeup_device() gets its functionality.
Upon resume, acpi_disable_wakeup_device() restores the state.

device_suspend() calls ACPI suspend functions, which seems to have undesired
side effects on lower idle C-states. It took me some time to realize that
especially the VAIO BIOSes (both Andrews jinxed UP and my elfstruck SMP one)
show this effect. I'm quite sure that other bug reports against suspend/resume
about turning the system into a brick have the same root cause.
After fishing in the dark for quite some time, I realized that removing the ACPI
processor module before suspend (this removes the lower C-state functionality)
made the problem disappear. Interestingly enough the propability of having a
bricked box is influenced by various factors (interrupts, size of the ram image,
...). Even adding a bunch of printks in the wrong places made the problem go
away. The previous periodic tick implementation simply pampered over the
problem, which explains why the dyntick / clockevents changes made this more
prominent.
We avoid complex functionality during the boot process and we have to do the
same during suspend/resume. It is a similar scenario and equaly fragile.
Add suspend / resume functions to the ACPI processor code and disable the lower
idle C-states across suspend/resume. Fall back to the default idle
implementation (halt) instead.

Introduce a new interface, acpi_bus_generate_netlink_event(),

suspend and hibernation are modified to use the new definitions (the
changes in drivers/acpi/sleep/main.c are, mostly, moving code to reduce
the number of ifdefs).
There are many other files in which CONFIG_PM can be replaced with
CONFIG_PM_SLEEP or even with CONFIG_SUSPEND, but they can be updated in
the future.

As it was a synonym for (CONFIG_ACPI && CONFIG_X86),
the ifdefs for it were more clutter than they were worth.
For ia64, just add a few stubs in anticipation of future
S3 or S4 support.

Split ACPI_DEBUG into function trace enabled and not enabled.
Function trace is most of the ACPI_DEBUG costs, but is
not much of use for kernel ACPI debugging.
Size of kernel image increased on test compile:
+ 48k (Full ACPI_DEBUG)
+ 35k (ACPI_DEBUG with function trace compiled out)
Performance without function trace is also much better.
Also remove ACPI_LV_DEBUG_OBJECT from default debug level as
a lot vendors let Store (value, debug) in their code and this
might confuse users when it pops up in syslog.

For NUMA emulation, our SLIT should represent the true NUMA topology of the
system but our proximity domain to node ID mapping needs to reflect the
emulated state.
When NUMA emulation has successfully setup fake nodes on the system, a new
function, acpi_fake_nodes() is called. This function determines the proximity
domain (_PXM) for each true node found on the system. It then finds which
emulated nodes have been allocated on this true node as determined by its
starting address. The node ID to PXM mapping is changed so that each fake
node ID points to the PXM of the true node that it is located on.
If the machine failed to register a SLIT, then we assume there is no special
requirement for emulated node affinity so we use the default LOCAL_DISTANCE,
which is newly exported to this code, as our measurement if the emulated nodes
appear in the same PXM. Otherwise, we use REMOTE_DISTANCE.
PXM_INVAL and NID_INVAL are also exported to the ACPI header file so that we
can compare node_to_pxm() results in generic code (in this case, the SRAT
code).

Last of the "Section mismatch" errors from ia64 builds! acpi_map_pxm_to_node()
is defined with attribute __cpuinit, but is called by "normal" kernel functions
acpi_getnode() and acpi_map_cpu2node().
Commit f363d16fbb moved the data structures on
which this routine operates from __cpuinitdata to regular memory, so this
routine can also move out of init space.

The boot option "acpi_osi=" has always disabled Linux _OSI support,
thus disabling all OS Interface strings which are advertised
by Linux to the BIOS.
Now...
acpi_osi="string" adds the interface string, and
acpi_osi="!string" invalidates the pre-defined interface string
eg. acpi_osi="!Windows 2006"
would disable Linux's claim of Vista compatibility.

Strip __cpuinit[data] from Node <-> PXM routines and supporting data
structures. Also make pxm_to_node_map and node_to_pxm_map local to the
numa acpi module.
This fixes a bug triggered by the following conditions:
- boot on a machine with a SLIT table defined
- kernel is configured w/ CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=n
- cat /sys/devices/system/node/node*/distance
This will cause an oops by calling into a freed memory section.
In particular, on x86_64, __node_distance calls node_to_pxm().

This reverts commit c0d127b569.
These changes to AML locking were made to allow
Notify handlers to be called on the stack
and not deadlock. However, that scheme turns
out to be flawed and was reverted by the previous commit,
so this commit restores the locking to it previous design.

acpi_integer is 64-bits on all platforms, and so was defined as a u64.
i386 and x86_64 define u64 as unsigned long long.
ia64 defines u64 as long.
While these are all 64-bits, the kernel build warns about formating
a "long" with %ll:
drivers/ata/libata-acpi.c:176: warning: long long unsigned int format, acpi_integer arg (arg 5)
So skip using "u64" and define acpi_integer as "unsigned long long"
to make gcc happy with %ll.

- replace the big #ifdef ARCH_APICTIMER_STOPS_ON_C3 hackery by functions
- remove the double switch in the power verify function (in the worst case
we switched ipi to apic and 20usec later apic to ipi)
- keep track of the the state which stops local APIC timer

ACPI AML supports "serialized" methods which are protected
by an implicit mutex. The mutex is re-entrant for that AML thread
to allow recursion.
However, Linux implements notify() by creating a new AML thread.
So for systems where notify() re-enters a serialized method,
deadlock results.
The fix is to use the Linux thread_id as the key to allowing
re-entrancy, not the AML thread pointer.
